“I am a real minimalist, because I don’t do very much. I know some minimalists who call themselves minimalist but they do loads of minimalism. That is cheating.” - Robert Wyatt

Happy birthday to Nick Mason, founding drummer of Pink Floyd and apparently the only member to be on *all* of the Floyd albums! His first solo album, Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports, is great and exceptionally weird, nothing like his other stuff or Floyd: because Carla Bley wrote and arranged all the material on it, and Robert Wyatt does all the singing. It’s great stuff you can hear it here

Robert Wyatt - French TV 1975
Since we just checked out a new piano interpretation of Eno's Music For Airports, here's that album's pianist — the mighty Robert Wyatt. This sweet little doc from the mid-70s takes us to Paris, where we get to see Wyatt chatting with an interviewer, being wheeled happily around a park by his wife/collaborator Alfie (pictured above with the butcher's knife) and — best of all — performing heartrending solo piano renditions of "Sea Song" and "Alifib." The only bad news is that the interview is completely in French, so unless you're fluent, you'll just have to enjoy Robert's groovy caftan.
Eno Says: Apart from the fact that I really like [Robert] as a person, and I liked his company, part of my experiment in those records was to see what happens if you mix this, with this, with this. It was being a little bit like a chemist. Can you get an interesting reaction out of that? I knew Robert was a very unusual ingredient. But I also know he has no ego in the studio at all. It's very easy to work with him. He always seems enormously grateful that you would think of asking him, which is funny because I always felt it should be the other way around: enormously grateful that he'd think of accepting.

Ryan Dombal: ...your career is a good example of how being an underdog isn’t necessarily something to overcome. Robert Wyatt: Well, that's about the nicest thing anybody's said to me in years. I hope that's the truth. It's not even a moral question. It's a question of pride. You have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror, and I don't know how some people do that. God knows I've been so wicked and selfish in the past, but nevertheless, I do really think the things I think and support the people I support. I would encourage people to realize that you don't have to panic if you're not part of a mainstream or if you find yourself outside the flow. If it doesn't suit you, don't go along with it. Just sit it out and get your stuff done. Don't just sit moaning or getting drunk—I spent some years doing that. But if you can just come up with something of your own, however minor it is, that's going to be easier to live with when you're at the end of your life.
