💋
Hi bestie I fully reblogged this to the wrong blog (I am so sleepy) but I’m just gonna commit to the bit now <3
💋- who are you favorite non canon pairing?
I mean. I gotta pour one out for the GOAT Mike and Emmett that you introduced me to, but as a lesbian I will always be drawn to rosella <33 does it count as non-canon if it’s a life and death with a regular timeline because I love and Bella and Edythe, or Beau and Eddie.

here's a very rambly & hopefully somewhat organised plotting/starter call for the event. i'm capping each muse at 3 starters each, and 5 threads per mun, though if you dm me either here or discord wanting more than 5 I'll probably say yes 🤷‍♀️ reply to this for starters, or like it & I'll hit you up for plotting.
arizona robbins: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
arizona is a doctor, and when she heard screams coming from inside the maze there was no way she was standing around outside while people could be in the dying. now she's wandering around trying to find people to help. starters:
atticus lincoln: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
like arizona, he thought he would be more help from inside the maze, but now he's more worried about trying to find jo and make sure she's okay, as well as his son who he is hoping is still with the babysitter at home and not somehow also in this maze. starters:
barbie: was dragged in (not open to death)
Tumblr media
there is no way barbie was walking into a creepy corn maze on her own free will, but now that she's here everyone better just make sure they watch their step as she stays on the ground, hoping if she doesn't move nothing bad can happen. starters:
bonnie bennett: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
bonnie was certain she could just, magic herself and everyone else out of the maze, and she's slightly pissed her magic isn't working the way it should. she's now just trying to find her loved ones and make sure they're safe. starters: elena gilbert, caroline forbes,
carlos de vil: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
carlos has no idea what is happening, and he just wants to get out of this maze please. his halloween plans entailed a costume party one of his coworkers was hosting, not being stuck in a creepy maze for a couple of days, or weeks. he's lost track of time of how long he's been here. starters: jane,
celeste kipper: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
celeste saw her sister walking into the maze, and followed after her. now she's lost mags, and is lost herself. though she know's she's in a different time & place she's still convinced this is the capitols doing and wants out. starters: mags flanagan,
charlotte king: was dragged in (not open to death)
Tumblr media
though she's a doctor, and can help people, charlotte is spending a lot of her time worried about her children outside the maze, but is also trying her hardest to find the few people in town she actually knows and likes. starters: amelia shepherd, addison Montgomery,
cleo sertori: went in willingly (not open to death)
Tumblr media
cleo is just getting over remembering that she was murdered a few months ago, and now she's trapped in what she thought was just a fun halloween experience. she just hopes there's no water anywhere around because she doesn't want to end up with a tail in the middle of a maze. starters: rikki Chadwick,
diego: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
diegos main concern is finding out that bree is okay, and he's not stopping until he's searched every square inch of the maze for her. if someone is bleeding around him, he may be tempted to stop for a bit of a snack, he is still a newborn afterall. starters: bree tanner,
edmund bridgerton: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
edmund was under the impression this was just how halloween was celebrated, though the disappearing entrance has given him pause. he's now hoping that his children aren't in here as well as he's heard some rather unpleasant goings on. starters: eloise bridgerton,
enola holmes: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
enola is naturally inquisitive, and clearly hasn't learned from all the previous events in this city, so she decided she'd check out the maze and is now wishing she'd waited for eloise or sherlock to be free to come with her, because she has no idea how she's meant to get back out. starters:
ginny miller: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
ginny has had a confusing few weeks, and now she's trapped in a corn maze the size of most of dc? she just wants out, whether that means scaling the walls or actually finding the exit she doesn't care. starters:
harvey hufflepuff: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
harvey was certain that he would be the master of this maze, but it's been a while and he seems no closer to getting out than he did when he walked in. he just hopes he finds his way out soon, he's getting hungry and his magic isn't working properly. starters:
laurent da revin: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
though laurent was dragged in, he isn't against this meaning he's got a free buffet of whoever in town he wants to eat. he's enjoying himself, despite the fact he's seemingly stuck. as long as he doesn't run into victoria asking for any more favors. starters: drusilla keeble
lexie grey: went in willingly (not open to death)
Tumblr media
lexie naively thought this was going to be fun, how bad could a maze be? now she can hear screams and is trying to do whatever she can to help people she finds injured, as well as hoping that one of the injured isn't someone she cares about. starters:
lily luna potter: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
lily thought she was having a date with her cute coworker, and now they're trapped in a maze even their wands can't get them out of? she hates it, but she's glad that harriet is by her side, she should know what to do, right? starters: harriet hufflepuff,
liv moore: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
though it only feels like days since she entered the maze, liv knows it's been longer because she's starting to feel the effects of no brains for quite some time. she's getting hungry, so she's staying away from people so she doesn't go full on zombie mode and become a part of the theatrics. starters: peyton Charles,
lola fleming narcisse: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
lola had been thinking about bringing john to the maze, but now that she's stuck in here she's glad he's at home with a sitter. she's now just trying her hardest to find her way out, and hoping someone she finds along the way can help her. starters:
melissa glaser: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
melissa thought she was going to be much better at finding her way out of a maze than she seems to be, is she walking in circles? she feels like she's going in circles. she's getting tired. starters: eric northman, faye chamberlain,
mia thermopolis: was dragged in (not open to death)
Tumblr media
sure, mia was dragged into this maze, but how bad could it be? she's already fallen over a few times, and can't seem to find her way out. she'd really like some help, please. starters: clarisse renaldi,
mika yasuda: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
mika wanted a break from work, and now she just keeps coming across people who've been hurt in this stupid halloween maze. she wants to find her way out, or find someone who can be more help than a surgical intern. she's trying her best. starters:
noel kahn: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
noel has very few hobbies, and his biggest one is fucking with the liars. now he's stuck in a corn maze because he thought it was a fun idea to scare them? good going noel. starters: hanna marin,
penelope park: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
penelope is confused why her magic isn't seeming to do what it should to help her, and the people she cares about get out. she just wants to leave, she's starting to panic. starters:
rebekah mikaelson: went in willingly (open to death)
Tumblr media
rebekah thought this would be fun, it's not. she's stuck in a maze, and everyone seems to be getting hurt around her, which is making her feel things she doesn't understand, why is she hungry? starters: elijah mikaelson,
simon basset: was dragged in (open to death)
Tumblr media
simon doesn't want to be in a maze, halloween isn't his thing. but he's heard screams from further in that he's now worried are daphne, who he still feels some sort of attachment to and he's going to check it out. starters: daphne bridgerton,

Hi Vinelle, do you think there would be any change in the story if Bree ran away before the Eclipse battle? She wouldn't be able to tell Edward (via telephaty) about Jane and Victoria's meeting and the fact she totally knew what was going on but chose to ignore it. Would the Cullens still realize that the Volturi wanted them dead since they arrived after the battle was over? Is their opinion of the Volturi as bad as in canon?
There's no change.
Bree only confirmed what Edward already thought, Jane's late arrival had been damning enough.
At the risk of getting Doylist, the ending of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner always seemed to me as Meyer wanting to soften the blow of Bree's death as much as she possibly could. Bree lost her mate and is paralyzed by grief, so she doesn't mind dying anyway! And would you look at that, she's able to give the Cullens vital information they'll get to use in the next book so her death isn't meaningless!
Nevermind that she only knew Diego for a few weeks and they were never more than friends, nevermind that the information Bree passed on to the Cullens was so vital that it's never brought up again nor something the Cullens didn't already know.
Bree makes no difference.

Breaking Dawn was Unnecessary (minus her becoming a vampire)
If you were to critically break down Bella’s character arc in the series, it starts and ends with her wanting to become a vampire. The inciting incident was not Bella meeting Edward, or her finding out he’s a vampire, but her brush with death at the end of Twilight. It was then she realized her life was fragile, that she was fragile, and that death was not a far-off date but a fact. Edward saving Bella counters this; by defeating James Edward defeats death. Edward is her way out, becoming a vampire is her solution. The series' goal isn’t romance, it’s escaping what feels inevitable and painful.
Her depression spiral in New Moon isn’t over the end of a romance but over end of her new life away from all things painful. Away from being hurt, from being ugly, from Forks and Charlie and poverty (a separate topic regarding Renee and her influence on Bella), and from dying. It’s why Jacob never stood a chance; he couldn’t provide her the reassurance she would be safe forever and was therefore unappealing. When the Volturi discovered Bella, her fate was sealed, and she would her get vampire wish. All that was left was convincing Edward.
Eclipse seems like an unnecessary side quest at first. He agrees to turn her, what more could we ask for? Why do we have to spend a whole book focusing on him versus Jacob and them versus the newborns? If it’s to cement she chooses immortality (Edward) over mortality (Jacob) then why has New Moon ended with such a sense of finality? What’s the point of the book? The Point isn’t, as one may first assume, reiterating Bella’s want to become immortal, it’s about her fight to become immortal. To do that, she must defeat the antagonist.
If the antagonist’s goal is to thwart the protagonist, who does that more than Edward? Not the Volturi, who want her to turn, and not Jacob, who poses no convincing threat. It is purely Edward who holds the emotional power over her to decide her fate. Now that Bella has gained conviction and knows what she wants she has to fight for it. She has to prove she doesn’t want Jacob and that she is worth more to Edward alive. First Edward must see her rebuff Jacob, must see that she will come back to him and that her feelings for Edward are stronger. That she can kiss Jacob and still have not a waiver of doubt that it is Edward she wants. Then she has to convince him that her life is too short and that he must lengthen it. It is in the final battle Edward finally realizes that he needs Bella by his side forever, and mortality cannot afford him that. He cannot let her die, so he must change her. It’s not Bella’s conviction that is tested in Eclipse, but Edwards's.
This brings us to Breaking Dawn. We’ve done it! It took a baby to get here, but Bella has been successfully turned. So, the series is over, right? Well, not quite. Had Renesmee not been the conflict of the story, we would have had both a blissfully shorter novel and a more concrete ending. By introducing a new character with so many plot ties so late in the series, Stephanie provides a jarring and at times unsettling end to her book. Sure, there are things that could’ve been addressed in the book. Jacob didn’t actually need a romantic end to his story, he could’ve had a much more fulfilling arc revolving around distancing himself from the people who hurt him and finding solace in his community. The Volturi could have had a conflict with the Cullens over the murder of Bree Tanner and their want for Edward and Alice’s gifts. Bella’s own gift and abilities could’ve been developed and considered past ‘she’s a master at being a vampire’. If you wanted to tie up loose ends, by all means, tie them up. But to include them at the expense of disregarding Bella’s arc and desires feels very off-putting.
All in all, breaking dawn is garbage and Edward tried to convince a sixteen-year-old to impregnate his wife and I’ve yet to recover please delete it stephanie please please

That interview infuriates me. Meyer admits that people might be upset but plows through anyway. It's only when creating a WHITE community that she even tries to be respectful and even then she just uses the real place regardless. And I bet anything that she didn't ask any Quileutes what THEY thought about Meyer using their real tribe as a plot device.
It's like she's almost there. She almost gets that making up the history of the "real life people of La Push" is worse than the other two things, because she has that "most especially" qualifier there. Like some tiny part of her realizes that it's worse to re-write an already marginalized people's history and use it in a work that generates a lot of profit for you.
As someone else said in the notes, the other two are just places. There are countless books set in cities and towns all over the world. It's whatever. Using an actual, specific, REAL, living group of marginalized people (the Quileutes) and re-writing their whole mythology, their whole history, and othering them by making them genetic werewolves is entirely different.
And this was while she was writing New Moon where instead of being like "whoops! I shouldn't have done that. Maybe I should reach out to the Quileute people? Ask for their advice on how to portray them respectfully? Give them some of the profits?" she just doubles down and makes them even more central characters, kills off Harry Clearwater and doesn't follow through with that thread at all (it's an Indigenous character dying so Edward can misunderstand and think it's Bella's funeral), invents the whole imprinting nightmare, just, ahhhhhhh.
I get it. Twilight was based on a dream and she was just writing it for herself. No one was supposed to ever see it but her mom, her sister and herself. But you'd think once the books WERE being published that someone would be like "um, guys?" at some point. I mean apparently her agent or editor or someone LOVED Jacob and encouraged her to make him a bigger character and it never came up like "hey are we representing these people respectfully?" And while using the Quileutes the way she did at all is problematic, Twilight is the least offensive of the bunch. It gets worse with each additional book. Jacob's just a sweet kid telling a story even HE doesn't think is true in the first one. The really harmful stuff that plays on Magical Indian tropes, as well as "wild" and "sexually aggressive" brown men comes later. She was aware at the very least that the "real life people of La Push" might find it "irritating," but instead of changing course she went all in on it, and to this day (as far as I know) SM hasn't done anything to compensate. A dollar from each sale of the Bree Tanner book went to the Red Cross, so it's not as if SM is opposed to the concept.
Anyway, https://mthg.org/ . I donated again the other day, and I encourage anyone who is in a financial position to do so to, well, do so. Also, we all know Amazon is . . . not great . . . but if you DO shop there, you can shop at smile.amazon.com and choose Quileute Tribal School as your charity and they will receive a tiny donation when you buy things.

summary: a chance encounter puts Fiona Tanner in the sights of the Cullen family. Emmett takes an immediate liking to her, but Edward thinks she's a threat to the family. No Emmett x Rosalie. warnings: kidnapping, ooc behaviour? words: 4kish
FIONA TANNER SEATTLE, DAY 1
From the moment her boots hit the cement on the busy Seattle sidewalk, the search was on. Holding tightly to the handle of her suitcase she tried to get her bearings. Fiona Tanner’s sister had been missing for months. The cops had nothing, and they weren’t taking any of Fiona’s advice.
“Let us do our jobs, ma’am. We’ll find your sister…” had not so slowly turned into “we can’t find someone that doesn’t want to be found.” Insinuating that her sister had run away with some boy, over the fact that the cops simply hadn’t done a good enough job. Bree was a troubled kid, who left home in a hurry before she’d turned fifteen. But she always stayed in contact with Fiona. Little messages from burner phones to let her sister know that she was okay.
A person could only drag their sister back just to watch her run away again so many times before they needed an alternative solution.
Like she was going to just sit around and hope that they were right. She was an extra set of eyes and ears. There was nothing that could stand between her, and finding her sister. At the very least she was going to get the truth.
Besides, she knew for a fact that her sister was dead.
The bus dropped Fiona off in front of an old diner. It looked out of place next to two modern buildings, but the charm of it drew her in. The ladies inside were friendly, offering her a table and some coffee. She ordered a burger with fries and a root beer. While the waitress withdrew to the kitchen, Fiona pulled out a map of the city that she had started using as her guide to remember everything. The map and a small notebook she’d bought at the dollar store.
The map had a small blue X over a bookstore just a few blocks over, which was her first stop after getting some lunch. Now seemed like the best time to take stock of everything she knew so far.
Bree’s friends had no idea where she was. But they weren’t the brightest bunch, and not really the trustworthy type either.
Another boy from the area had gone missing recently as well. Riley Biers, last seen in May, 2010. He went missing near Pike Place Market.
Bree wouldn’t ever just run away with someone without telling her. She was in trouble.
And that was it. That was all Fiona knew.
But the family couldn’t just move on. Bree had looked exactly like Fiona did at her age. It became a curse when her own parents would struggle to look into her eyes, preferring to stare into their glass whenever she entered the room. It was like that a year ago, but when she had to tell her parents that she’d been talking to Bree, and hadn’t told them…
Being away from them wasn’t the worst thing right now.
It wasn’t something she wanted to think about at that moment. Her concentration needed to be on her investigation.
“Here ya go,” the waitress said, setting down the plate of food. Fiona smiled, and slid her map out of the way. She was starving.
She picked up a fry and brought it to her mouth, but suddenly felt… wrong. There was a weird feeling in her mind. Like someone was watching. No, not watching. Listening.
Then clear as day she heard it. This tiny little nagging voice that had started harassing her a few weeks ago. It sounded just like her sister, except this voice was deeper, raspy like she was dying of thirst.
Run, Fiona.
She put the fry back and grabbed a twenty from her wallet, strolling up to the counter to pay and get a to go container. Fiona kept her cool, but kept her defences up.
Don’t think about me.
Fiona looked around the diner. There were two teens taking pictures of their milkshakes and giggling. Then there was a couple. A girl and an Abercrombie model. Only one plate of food between them.
As if on cue, the boy picked up one of her fries and put it in his mouth. But Fiona didn’t miss the confused look on the girls’ face when he did it. He whispered something under his breath that made the girl look down, her hair making a waterfall to block out her face. But it didn’t matter, Fiona had his face painted in her memories.
I said, run!
The voice was annoying. But the scary thing to Fiona, was that she could hear dead people. Kind of like a medium, but she suppressed it. Pushed it down, down, down until it was suffocated. Bree, however, always knew how to get under Fiona’s skin.
Please, Fiona thought, just tell me what happened.
I told you, it’s not safe. Go home!
“Lady?” said the waitress, holding out the change to her. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” Fiona said, putting her phoney smile back on. “Sorry, keep the change.” She took her to go box to the table and threw the fries in it, and everything else she owned back in her bag. She flipped it over one shoulder gracefully and grabbed her burger, taking a big bite of it. She looked back at the couple, but caught his narrowed eyes staring at her.
He was the one listening. She tried to immediately cover her thoughts by thinking the alphabet as loud as possible, but she could read from the look on his face that it was too late.
You’re going to get hurt. Bree had been fighting Fiona every step of the way. Putting fake clues in her mind, trying to push out clues that were helpful…
It was annoying.
C’mon Bree, Fiona thought. Gimme a clue.
How about a hint?
Yes, Bree! Please give me a hint.
Okay, go home. That’s your hint. Goodnight.
Goodnight, yourself. It’s not even dark out.
FIONA TANNER SEATTLE, DAY 2
Wake up!! Bree was shouting. It was frantic, unlike anything Fiona had ever heard before. Please, Fiona, please, wake up!! Someone is in the bathroom!
In a second, all of the grogginess was wiped away. Fiona sat up quickly, pulling the blankets to her chest. She had triple, quadruple checked that the door was locked before bed. And she could see that it was still locked now. How could someone have…
I think… they’re leaving.
How?? Fiona was starting to shake. There’s no window in there.
Then something in the air shifted. And the only reason she knew something was different was the tiny breeze she felt on her face, and the fact that the door wasn’t locked anymore.
Who was in here, Bree?
I’m not telling.
But you know?
No.
Liar.
Fiona rubbed her temples. Bree’s yelling had given her a headache. To make things worse, Bree was loudly singing, “go hoooooome” over and over. Fiona got up, changed out of her pyjamas into jeans and a white tee. And pulled her boots on. She has at the edge of the bed for a minute, her head in her hands as she took some deep breaths.
Fiona looked out the window, and noticed something bizarre. There was a girl, standing stiff as a board. And Bree went radio silent.
Know that girl?
When Bree didn’t answer, Fiona dropped down, hiding herself out of view. Holy shit! Do you actually know that girl?
Fiona was getting tired of this. If Bree wasn’t going to talk, someone else was going to. With reckless abandon, she threw open the door and stomped across the parking lot, not really caring that this girl was starring at her.
“Do you know Bree Tanner?” Fiona asked loudly, before she was even close to the girl.
Shut up! Shut up! You have no idea what you’re starting!
“Excuse me?” said the girl. She was impossibly beautiful. The kind of beautiful that wasn’t even fair for the rest of the world.
“My sister is Bree Tanner, and I think she knows you.”
“And how could you know that?”
“She told me.”
“I doubt that.”
“Why? Because she’s dead?”
The girl shut up after that. Fiona was getting sick and tired of no one answering her questions. She knew she was playing with fire, but she didn’t care. If this girl was some drug dealer who got Bree killed, she was going to find out. And she wanted to find out today, right now.
“I don’t care what shit you’re in with the police, I just want to know what happened to her.”
Shut. Up! Or you’ll be dead like me.
The girl didn’t speak again. “Do you know the boy who listens?”
The next five seconds went faster than she could have possibly believed. She was suddenly in complete darkness. With all her belongings beside her. In a small, tight space. Where was she? What happened.
You’re in a TRUNK, dumbass, you just got kidnapped.
Well that, was bad news for Fiona. She wanted to scream but her mouth was covered. She wanted to fight but her hands were tied. How did that happen? How did she miss her own kidnapping?
The boy who could listen was here. Probably in the car. She could feel him in there.
“How could she know this much?” The beautiful girl asked. Fiona had no idea why, but she could hear them in her head. In her mind.
“Be quiet,” he said sharply.
Silence.
“She can hear us,” he said. “I can’t… I can’t look in her mind, I’m just hearing my words echoed back, louder than her thoughts. I think she’s burying them.”
Instead of burying them, she turned it around. Played it loud like shouting into a megaphone. Did you do this to Bree, too? And then she projected Bree’s image. She closed her eyes and tried to push every detail of her sister’s face into his mind. But, he edited it. Saw it the way he saw it, with bright red eyes. She felt the car swerve violently and she cracked her arm as she rolled onto it. It hurt so badly. She hoped it wasn’t broken but the way her fingers stopped responding to her made her worried.
“Knock it off!” he shouted.
“What?” His passenger asked. Don’t be rude, she thought.
Not you, Rosalie. Did the listening boy think that?
It was getting too confusing for her to keep all these voices straight. Rosalie was sitting with the boy who listens. She didn’t know his name. It made no sense, how could she hear them? She could only ever hear the dead, but this wasn’t the same. Bree sounded like she was in the middle of Fiona’s brain, but the other two… they sounded like Fiona was listening to them from a couple feet away. They were on the outside, and Bree was on the inside.
Please, Bree begged, I don’t know how to help you now.
It didn’t matter. Fiona passed out.
EMMETT CULLEN FORKS, DAY 1
Emmett hated when the family went into crisis mode. Jasper didn’t want to play chess because he was too busy fretting over Alice. Edward was having four panic attacks a day thinking that these “loose ends” were going to get Bella killed. And Carlisle and Esme were making Plan B arrangements in case they had to move, which is what everyone kept saying. No one was brave enough to say in case we have to kill her.
He heard Edward and Rosalie driving over the speed limit. Faster than ever, maybe. And he was excited to at least see some kind of action around here. Ever since he got to the house everyone has treated him like he’s stupid. Which he was not.
“Jasper!” Emmett called, beaming up the stairs. “They’re coming!”
“Yes, thank you Emmett. I hear them too.” Jasper spoke normally. Knowing Emmett could hear him through the walls.
Edward skidded his car to a quick stop in front of the house. Emmett happily joined Carlisle and Esme on the front lawn. They had all agreed to greet their guest and try to explain things as civilly as possible. Edward and Rosalie were supposed to go get her, invite her on a tour around town and then invite her for a dinner. Emmett was excited to make a friend, and also excited to watch his family force down a pizza. They all got so miserable after eating human food.
“Oh dear,” Esme said.
Emmett didn’t understand what the big deal was. Edward was out of the car, talking to Bella on the phone. The wedding was still a ways away, this was only supposed to be a minor inconvenience. Rosalie had run off into the woods before even greeting anyone. She hadn’t been coping well lately and hadn’t spent much time talking to anyone. Not that she was very friendly on a regular basis.
Only then did Emmett notice that the car door was open, but he could tell the heartbeat he heard and the blood he smelled was behind a wall of metal. She wasn’t in the backseat. They put her in the trunk?
Seemed a little rude.
The girl was bleeding back there too. Probably why Rosalie had to run. He couldn’t blame her, this girl smelled so good. She smelled like joy would taste.
“Pop the trunk!” Emmett said, laughing at Edward’s constipated expression.
“Emmett,” Carlisle whispered. His dad didn’t want to make a joke out of this. “Edward, please.”
Edward didn’t get off his phone call but clicked open the trunk with his keys. Emmett and Carlisle ran over to examine the damage.
As soon as Emmett saw her, he was smitten. Absolutely smitten. She was so pretty. The most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Short black hair, round little face with the pinkest lips in the world. And they looked like they would be so fun to kiss. Emmett was aware his brother wasn’t answering Bella, and instead was staring at Emmett, but he didn’t care though. He could see the relation to Bree in her features, but she was definitely older.
“Her arm is broken,” he said. “I’ll bring her to my office and set it, and cast it.”
Esme coughed for a moment, briefly distracted by the pooling of blood in the trunk of Edward’s Volvo. “Need anything from your office, dear?”
Emmett could see the appreciation on Carlisle’s face. Emmett wanted love like these two had. Or like Alice and Jasper. Or Edward and Bella. Or Rosalie and her reflection. Carlisle gave her a short list of things he would need to cast her arm, he was only missing a few things that he had used before they came back to town.
Carlisle reached to pick her up, but Emmett swatted his hands away quickly. Not harshly, as it wasn’t meant to hurt Carlisle. But Emmett had to do it himself. He had to be the one to carry this girl. It didn’t matter what Edward wanted. No one was going to hurt her. Edward doesn’t get to always have everything his way.
“What’s her name again?” Emmett asked, his voice more gentle than they’s ever heard it as he gingerly picked her up.
“Fiona.” Carlisle watched Emmett’s every move.
“Fiona,” Emmett repeated quietly.
He didn’t want her to wake up, so he walked slowly through the house. Setting her down on the space Carlisle made on the desk. The blood didn’t bother Emmett for even a moment. He never even hesitated. He just brushed the hair off her face, and waited while Carlisle worked.
“You seem to have taken to this girl.”
“I just think she’s pretty,” Emmett said. “It’s not her fault about her sister. If one of us went missing, would you not stop at nothing to get us back?”
“You’re right about that.” Carlisle looked pained. “May I ask you something, Emmett?”
“Yeah, of course.” Emmett didn’t look up from the girl’s face, and instead dragged his fingers softly around the edge of her face. Maybe she would be his Bella.
Was it creepy to be thinking this before she had a chance to wake up and meet him? He can’t just claim her, only hope that she was as fascinated by him.
Edward came through the door before Carlisle could ask about what Emmett was thinking. Edward was clearly mad. Esme slipped in, giving Carlisle the things he asked for, but opted to slip out and remove herself from the blood. Emmett understood, Fiona smelled as tempting as a fresh apple pie.
“Why is she untied?” he asked, grabbed the abandoned tie off the ground. It was all he’d had to tie her up with at the time.
“Do you think she needs to be?” Carlisle asks.
“Yes, I do.” Edward crossed his arms. Emmett was getting irritated by the vibe in the room. It was bad vibes in here.
“No, Edward.” Carlisle kept working. “We don’t hold hostages.”
“You’re right, we should just kill her now,” he said, cooly. As if it wasn’t a person they were talking about. Carlisle paused, but continued.
Emmett stood up tall, puffing his chest out and blocking Edward’s view of Fiona.
“You’re not touching her,” he said.
“Are you going to stop me, Emmett?” Edward asked. “You don’t even know her.”
“I know that I’m not a danger to her,” he said. “And you are. So get out while Carlisle works.”
“You’ve lost your…” Edward trailed off, and dropped to his knees clutching his head. Emmett stooped down on one knee, immediately changing from being worried about this girl to worried about his brother. “It’s her.”
Fiona was stirring awake, Carlisle finishing and clearing himself just in time for her to start squirming.
“Oh my god, her thoughts - there’s so many…” Edward tried to clear a path, try to sort between her thoughts and the thoughts of others’ that lived in her mind. “They’re not hers.”
“STOP!” she shouted, sitting perfectly up. “My sister doesn’t know the truth, she’s no danger to the secret.”
“Fiona?” Carlisle asked. Everyone was totally stunned. The girl looked lifeless behind her eyes, like this wasn’t her but a cheap replication of her. Other than sitting up, her limbs were still and lifeless, no sign of pain or distress.
“Bree.”
“Bree?” Esme said, slipping in the door. “Bree is it really you?” Esme fluttered over, putting her hands on the girls’ face. She was close to tears. “I’m so sorry.” Esme had been feeling guilty over Bree everyday since it had happened.
“Esme,” Carlisle said softly. He didn’t want to silence his wife, but he didn’t know how much time they had to talk to her.
“She doesn’t know what really happened. You still have time to lie. Don’t kill her.”
“Don’t worry little buddy,” Emmett said. “No one is going to hurt Fiona.”
“Remains to be seen,” Edward muttered.
“No, it doesn’t.”
“Sounds like family meeting time,” Esme said. “I’ll go find the others.” She slipped outside the office.
“I don’t understand,” Fiona said, her eyes focused. Her voice settled. It was her now. There was life in her eyes, but also fear, and she touched the cast on her arm. Even her voice was beautiful. Is this how the dogs feel? Emmett had never felt stronger than right now. Emmett didn’t move towards her for fear of startling her, she was so small.
“She can’t stay up here alone,” Edward said.
“I trust Carlisle to speak for me,” Emmett said, looking at Fiona. She was frightened, but brave. Trying to establish her surroundings. “I’m not going to let you hurt her no matter what you say anyway.”
“You’re risking everything,” Edward said. “For someone you don’t even know.”
“Sound familiar?” Emmett asked, scoffing. “I always had your back, even when I didn’t get it.”
Edward flashed a look of guilt but shook it off. Emmett knew they couldn’t keep taking risks like this, but she wasn’t a risk, she was a person. As fast as he’s ever run, Emmett grabbed her things from the car, and dropped them right at her feet. She was shaking, clearly terrified.
“How did you do that?”
“Your phone is in there, I checked.” Emmett heard his family go silent. The conversation was a waste of time anyway, it was just Carlisle trying to convince Edward that there were more options than murder. “I won’t stop you from calling 911. We are the Cullens, you’re in Forks. I’ll even give you the number for Chief-”
“Emmett!” Rosalie yelled. But Emmett got to the door first. Holding it shut from Rosalie’s destructive fists. It cracked and splintered under her heavy hits. “If we have to start over you are so dead.”
FIONA TANNER FORKS, DAY 1
Fiona was crying now. Confused by all the thoughts in her head. She could hear the whole family. Pieces of the conversation downstairs. She could hear the listener getting mad. He didn’t like his own thoughts being repeated back to him but she couldn’t help that. There was also the typical voices that she usually had buried, but coming out of whatever happened to her allowed them to flood in. People screaming in pain, or begging for help, or just taunting her for the fun of it. What did the boy who listens make of her?
“I’m not calling the police,” she whispered. “I just want to know what happened to Bree.”
Rosalie stopped busting the door at Carlisle’s request. But each of her exaggerated stomps could be heard as she left the house. She turned on music in the garage and started fussing with her cars. Emmett just looked at her, welcoming her to make the first move.
“You’re Emmett?”
“Yes.” For his huge stature, he seemed so kind and timid to her. She could hear him thinking about her. And it was so, so flattering.
“Are you dead?”
“Yes.”
“Then how are you alive?”
“I don’t know if I should answer that right now,” he said. “Let’s skip for now.”
“Was Bree dead?”
“I thought you already knew she was dead.” Emmett looked down. “I’m really sorry about that.”
“I meant… uhm… when you met her, for the first time, was she already dead?”
“Yes.”
“Explains why I can hear you twice.” She needed a minute to process all of this. How was she supposed to process all of this?
“Can you hear me think?” He asked.
“Yes.”
“Oh,” he said, lowering his head. “That’s kind of embarrassing.”
Fiona smiled, and chuckled. Which made Emmett smile and chuckle. It was quiet in the room for a minute. Fiona tried to sort out her thoughts and Emmett watched her.
“I really don’t want to cause any trouble for your family,” she said. “Can you just tell me what happened to my sister?”
“No one here hurt her,” Emmett said. “We were trying to save her but there are some people who just… get their way.”
“Why did they want to hurt her?”
“Can I skip?” he asked.
She nodded lightly. His vague answers were disappointing but he seemed genuine, and it was probably a “the less you know the better” kind of deal around here. Maybe she should’ve listened to Bree.
You think? Bree thought. She sounded weak after taking control of of Fiona.
“Am I going to die, Emmett?” she asked, her voice wavering.
“No, I’ve got you now. You’ll be safe with me.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”

Crybaby Avengers in Twilight (Pt. 2--On Leah)
Sources
The Twilight Illustrated Guide
The Official Site for Twilight (FAQs)
The Purchased Books written by Meyer, especially The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner
“Native Women of Twilight“ (Burke Museum)
Leah Clearwater
Desire (at first): To be with Sam and live “normally” as she had expected.
Desire (then): For her, her family, the pack(s) to be safe and happy(ier).
Context
Without Bella, the Cullens would have left Forks earlier and stayed away for at least until Leah’s generation died away. The Cullens’ presence evidently activates the shapeshifting gene, and with that comes imprinting. If the tribespeople never shifted, Leah would have been married to Sam and she herself wouldn’t be dealing with a body that isn’t doing what it should (periods), she wouldn’t be treated as a freak amongst freaks, and her tribe would be perfectly safe from a horrible death.
Explanation
Then there is the way that Leah’s being becomes reduced to whether or not she will be able to have kids of her own. Instead of children being something joyous but a prospect that comes after developing one’s own life if wanted, having children became a desperate sign of normality for Leah. Even if she knew she could have kids, I don’t think she’s allow herself to do so because she be terrified that they would transform. Or if they never did, she’d be terrified that they lived near vampires. (She’s already suffering from Seth being a werewolf and her father probably dying from a heart attack brought on by either her or Seth first transforming in front of him. Allegedly.)
Plus the actual physical preparation the body goes through to transform for the  first  time is a trip: a rapid growth of muscles and bones, a shoot up of height, nearly unbearable pain from such growth, a terrible mood, feeling ill and having very high temperatures.....
Leah’s anger is cast as symbolically antagonistic, if not really an obstacle, to Eternal BellaxEdward. She makes Bella uncomfortable and doesn’t bother to tamp down her resentment towards her, and as we saw in BD, Edward hates Bella being uncomfortable. The heat of her anger/”hate” contrasts the passion of Bella’s and Edward’s love, just as Rosalie’s resentment does.
So yes, Leah is angry and she may not be out for full-blown revenge, but I am sure every time she got to kill a vampire she imagined at least one of the Cullens. At least for a few milliseconds. And she must have felt somewhat vindicated when she yelled at Bella. Whatever validation from that though, would easily get cast as excessive or something Bella doesn’t deserve. Of which I think is true and false for different reasons.
Bella didn’t directly hurt Leah nor does she see to hurt her or anyone else, but she definitely enables the Cullens to have foothold near the tribe, having Leah interact with the very entity that changed her life for the worse.
I write about Leah in further detail HERE.
More than all this, Leah is an avenger in that she attempts to vindicate herself and “redeem” her suffering consistently confronting others by openly talking about her unique suffering. As the only woman in an all-male militaristic group,--and as one romantically rejected by the leader of said group--Leah is the object of repulsion for the rest. She isn’t “supposed” to be there--as the book made men the legitimate aggressors of the series--but since she is her existence is even more of a question of what exactly the men are as werewolves/protectors of the tribe. If Leah is supposed to be the protected, what does that make the men if she becomes one of them, one of the protectors?
And this is not saying that the tribe has sexist ideals or structures but that how Meyer decided to make female werewolves something that never existed until Leah--without even a hint of explaining how or why--positions Leah as some sort of agent of disorder and the possible destruction of the so-called tribal values/history (that Meyer makes out of nowhere). Since the pack is inextricably tied to the tribe and the tribe’s history is instrumental to its modern condition (look at “Sam” below), and since Twilight figures the indigenous men as the sole or definitive leaders and preservers of tribal identity.
Meanwhile, that is definitely not the case.
While women in leadership roles might seem relatively progressive according to Western standards, Native women have always maintained roles of authority, taking responsibility for preserving values and culture within the family and among the community (“Native Women in Twilight”).
So Leah could also be said to avenge the pain of being resented for being an agent of disorder, of which she never even asked for. She is then an “avenger” of not being listened to.
We’re meant to sympathize with her, but we’re also meant to see Leah as unnecessarily displaying anger when she has no way of getting out of her position when we should be feeling angry for her having been put there at all.
We see her as crying stupidly. Not as if there isn’t something to cry about, but that she continues to cry despite knowing that it doesn’t do anything. Similar to Rosalie.

Join Me pt. 2
What she remembers: Fire burning every cell of her body, reforming and then burning again. Her heart, beating much too fast to be safe, pumping the fire through her body. Victoria speaking to her in a soft voice, crooning to her and brushing hands Bella can barely feel through her hair. It’ll be over soon. I’m sorry. I remember how much it hurts. The fire slowly starting to leave her body, starting with her toes and then her legs and torso. It dragged to her heart, hotter than before.
What she remembers: Edward. The soft venom in his honey voice. I don’t want you anymore. I’m a good liar. All of the Cullen's leaving. Leaving her. Her best friend Alice leaving without a goodbye, half a year of friendship gone because of a paper cut. Esme staring at her in mute horror, hand clasped over her mouth and eyes black with hunger. Jasper’s venom coated teeth snapping inches from her face, a ferocious snarl tearing from his throat. Carlie’s steady breathing as he stitched her better, Rosalie’s smug expression as she left the house, Emmett with her, a firm grip on Jasper. The fear ripping through her, a scream tearing from her sore throat when she woke up every night (when she wakes up two-days later, she remembers them, him, with a soft hatred, understanding why they, he, had to leave her but hating them, him, for it).
What she remembers: When Bella woke up, it was with a gasp. Someone’s hand, skin warm and smooth, maybe soft, was holding hers.
What she remembers: Her body flying from the floor and into a corner, bent into a predatory position, protecting herself. Victoria watched her warily from where Bella originally was, hands held out in a placating gesture. She only noticed her with a part of her brain, the rest of her was focused on everything else. She could see, taste, smell everything. “Wow,” she breathed, and then froze, she could taste the dust motes on her tongue, and the tangy taste of leather and cotton. Her voice, though, that startled her. It was higher pitched, musical, like a bell, nothing like Victoria’s little girl’s voice.
                                                          *****************************
Bella loved running, going so fast everything should have blurred as it flew past her, her bare feet barely touching the ground. It felt like flying and for those first few days Bella and Victoria raced each other all the way from Washington to Canada and back again. Victoria let Bella hunt her own way, following closely so nothing went wrong. It felt weird, sinking her teeth into some homeless man’s throat, but the taste and feel of his blood kept her from thinking about it too much. Her eyes were still ruby red; she jumped in fright every time she saw them in a reflection. Victoria told her, after she stopped laughing at Bella, that they wouldn’t be so bright in a year.
It was after the third feeding – round of hunting? – that she bought the topic up to Victoria, nervously fingering the fringes of her yellow sweater. For the first month of her “new” life, she ripped hundreds of shirts and pants trying to get them on. She was so much stronger than the flimsy fabrics now.
“Do you think,” she began, smiling softly when Victoria swatter her fingers away from the sweater, “that we should change our eating habits?” She remembered the Cullen's, thoughts clouds and hazy, and their gold eyes and how they hunted animals, not humans.
Victoria arched a brow, head tilted, something Bella still associated with house cats. “What do you mean?” She asked and Bella swallowed, noting the dull burn in her throat, and sighed softly. “I think we should hunt animals.” She waited with bated breath as the words sunk in, Victoria’s mouth thinning and her eyes turning speculative. “Why do you think that?” she finally asked after 105 seconds of silence. Bella blew out a noisy breath of relief and launched into her explanation. How he – Bella never spoke about them by name and Victoria never questioned it, she just went with it – and the rest of his family had hunter animals, not humans, and that it left them much the same as her and Victoria. How he had hunted after the human predators for a time, how he stopped because he didn’t want to be a monster.
Victoria looked at Bella and Bella looked back, a silent conversation between the two of them going on. Victoria saw how Bella truly wanted this, how only feeding from any human that they found was slowly killing her. Bella saw how Victoria shied away from the thought of hunting animals but liked the idea of hunting down the predators, of making them suffer the way their prey did. Victoria nodded, reaching out her hand, and Bella immediately put her hand in hers, linking their fingers.
This, their relationship, was something Bella never had when she was human. Something she could have had with Alice, had it not been cut short. “We could try,” she says, and hope flares up and Bella throws herself at Victoria, the red-head yelping as the force of the tackle makes Victoria fly backwards, right into an old spruce that crashes to the ground with a loud groan.
“You’re an idiot,” Victoria laughs, fond, and Bella beams.
                                        *****************************
Bella watched as Victoria paced back and forth, too fast for a human to see, too fast for Bella to watch without wincing as her feet makes permanent marks in the cement. “Vic,” Bella sighs, interrupted by the groan of the human boy lying in a pool of his own blood six-feet from where she perched.
Riley Biers.
Six-feet-three-inches and pure muscle. Not stocky like a football player, but lankier, like a swimmer. Sandy blond hair and a sharp jawline with high cheekbones. A beautiful boy, really. Victoria had stopped him from dying after feeding from his attackers; three assholes who jumped him and brutalized him and left him for dead. Victoria hunted them down and made them pay. Victoria had called up Bella, swearing and frantic, on the verge of a panic attack and Bella had rushed to her, worried about her sister.
“I can’t let him die, Bell,” Victoria sobbed, letting Bella tug her into a tight hug, red curls tickling her cheek. “I think he’s my mate,” she whispered a while after, having gotten Riley stabilized, the bleeding done for now, his ribs wrapped up nice and tight. Bella had taken a nursing class when they got to Seattle, after being in Canada for half a year, and felt sure enough in her skills that she knew Riley would last for a few more hours. Or until Victoria figured out what she wanted to do.
Bella glanced over at her best friend, brows raised, sympathy clear in her orange-amber eyes. “Why do you say that?” She asked, knowing she had to be the one to stay clinical, to not let her emotions or feelings get in the way of what needed to happen. She glanced down at Riley, at the shallow rise and fall of his chest.
“Because” Victoria sighed, running both hands through the snarled mass of red curls, “I could tell from the moment I heard him scream. It was killing me, knowing someone was hurting him, that he was in pain. Then I got to him and took one look at his face and it was like something clicked. Like I was missing something and didn’t realize until he was right there.”
Bella pressed her lips together and glanced down at Victoria. She placed her arms around the other woman, letting her lean against her for comfort. “Then change him,” she whispered. “If he feels the same way about you that you do about him when he wakes up. . ..” She trailed off, shrugging, Victoria hissed slightly when the motion jostled her head on Bella’s shoulder. She was thinking about it though, Bella knew, in the clinical, careful way that she thought.
“Do you really think so?” She asked, voice soft and shy and hesitant and Bella was surprised that her spitfire of a best friend was nervous about this human boy. Though, she supposed, this was certainly not a situation that anyone would be comfortable or sure in. She wondered if Carlisle was this nervous before creating another vampire to join his family. Was he this nervous, or was he self-assured, confident that he was making the right decision?
Victoria suddenly sat up straight, a gasp leaving her mouth and she flew the three-feet to Riley Biers, hands fluttering uselessly over him, eyes wide and frantic. Riley was watching her, cheeks bright red like he had a fever, his own eyes wide, lips parted like he wanted to say something, but Bella beat him to it. “Now or never, Vic,” she said, kneeling down on the other side of Riley, movements slow and deliberate so as to not frighten him. Victoria drew in a deep breath, wincing when the smell and taste of his blood surrounded her.
She told him about the change, about what Bella and Victoria did, how they tried to protect girls, and boys, from those who hurt them, who manipulated them for their own gain. How Riley had a choice: they could change him, turn him into a vampire; they could let him die, peacefully, with no pain; or they could bring him to a hospital.
Three days later, Riley Biers woke up as a vampire. Two months later Bella had to leave Seattle for a few days because she was not listening to Victoria and Riley have sex. No, she’d rather burn again.
                                          *****************************
It was a three months later when they met Bree Tanner. She was a tiny thing and Bella felt a maternal affection and a need to protect for the girl the minute she saw her. She was sitting in a corner, knees drawn up to her chest and arms wrapped tightly around her knees. She was watching Bella and Bella was watching Bree.
Bella knew Bree was poor, that she had no real home life. She saw her nearly get into some creeps’ car because he offered to buy her dinner for a blowie. Thank god Bree had the good sense to realize she’d probably end up with some disease if she did this and said no. Bella would have thrown up if she could. She settled for draining the guy dry and leaving him in the alley she found him in. Three days later she saw Bree again and this time Bella got her lunch; a turkey sandwich from a Deli Bree likes, with a bag of Taki’s and a strawberry shake from a McDonald’s down the street. Bella also bullies Bree into drinking two bottles of water.
After, when Bree asks why Bella did this, the woman could only shrug, not truly knowing. “You look like you could use the meal and that you don’t know a lot of people who would buy you lunch.” Bree had smiled at that, tentative and as pretty as the sun after a long day of rain. Bella promises herself she’ll buy Bree lunch, or any meal, whenever they see each other.
It’s a month later when Bree’s father dies, and the poor girl is homeless. Bella gets a call from a payphone and rushes to Bree, pulling the crying girl into a tight hug that steals the breath from Bree’s lungs (Bella finally realizes how easily Edward could have killed her when she holds Bree’s fragile, human body in her arms).
Riley and Victoria are with her, standing a few feet back so as to not frighten the girl – neither admit it’s because Bree smells good and Riley is still too new to be trusted so close to a human he wasn’t planning on feeding from. Victoria watches the fond look grow in Bella’s eyes, the way she brushes a lock of black hair from the girl’s forehead, the way the girl doesn’t flinch away from Bella’s alien touch. Bella hadn’t flinched away from Victoria’s touch, but Bella was weird and something different was going on in her brain, so she couldn’t really fault her for that.
Riley tugged her closer, tight against his side and Victoria smiled at the familiar flash of heat that went through her body, snuggling into his side and wrapping her arms around his waist. He wasn’t breathing too much, she knows, even knowing Bella and Victoria would never let him hurt someone he shouldn’t. Could never be too careful. “D’you think Bells will change her?” He whispered, low enough anyone that could walk by would have no chance of hearing. Bella, of course, hears him though, and stretches her arm out behind her to flash Riley the finger, making him shake with suppressed laughter.
“Maybe,” Victoria murmurs, resting her head against Riley’s shoulder and listens to Bella ask Bree about her classes at school, listens to Bree go on and on and on about a short story she’s writing for her English class. “We just finished Macbeth though, so she has to give us the test before we really get into the stories. My teacher told me I wrote the best essay in all her classes,” she gloats and Bella beams, proud as any mother. “You’ll have to let me read it,” Bella says and Bree nods eagerly, “’Course,” she promises.
Neither Victoria or Riley is surprised when Bella changes Bree and the two are joined at the hip, Bree always holding onto Bella’s hand and Bella always smoothing down Bree’s hair.
Bella lays at night, Bree curled up against her side as she softly reads from a book of poems by Audre Lorde. Victoria has her head in Riley’s lap, his fingers carding through her wild curls, both listening to Bree’s soft voice.
“In the blood in the bone over coffee/ before dashing for elevators going/ in opposite direction without goodbyes,” she reads out loud and Bella smiles, closing her eyes.
She finally has her family.

Somethings I just remembered about twilight
Edward likes to watch Bella sleep
Bella’s mother kidnaped her and moved far away from Charlie
Alice was likely in an insane asylum, reason why her hair is so short
Carlisle tried to starve himself to death because he really really didn’t wanna hurt people
Carlisle’s dad was a vampire hunter, I think?
Edward really wanted to fight in WWI but the flu stopped him :(
Esme, probably the most tragic of stories, married an abusive man, found herself pregnant, ran away, and gave birth. But her baby died very shortly after the birth and so devastated, she threw herself off a cliff, hoping to die, but was still alive when they took her to the morgue and was turned by Carlisle. As a result, she acts as a mother to a bunch of hundred year old teenagers
Rosalie was so kind and supportive of Bella’s pregnancy because she always wanted a baby of her own
When Bella laid dying of blood loss and shock from her c-section, Edward bit and licked all over her to make her turn and his spit closed the bite marks
Carlisle turned Rosalie because he wanted Edward to get a girlfriend and stop being so damn moody
Jasper was legitimately depressed and haunted because he could feel his victim’s feelings while he hunted and killed them and did not know any other way of living as a vampire so he thought it was the only way
oooooooh....15 year old Bree Tanner’s dad was abusive and so she ran away from home, and as she was starving on the street, a new vampire named Riley approached her, offering her a cheeseburger, and knowing that he likely wanted sex in return, she took up his offer and he turned her into a vampire.
Bree Tanner fell in love with another newborn vampire who was killed and Bree was killed after the vampire war of Eclipse, ending her short painful life...thinking Edward’s words of “Don’t look” were for her.

diego was confused, he remembered dying, and here he was wandering the streets of, washington dc? he was glad it was slightly overcast today, making sure that nobody saw the glimmer of his skin as he wandered around. he wasn't sure what exactly he was looking for, he doubted anybody he knew was here. that was until he turned a corner, eyes widening as they met with a very familiar face. the most familiar face. "bree?"

Note
do you have any thoughts on bree tanner?
On Bree Tanner herself, not so much. I did read her book, and from my recollection (I lent it to a friend who never gave it back. And I’m pretty sure she didn’t even read it(!)) Bree is pretty much what she’s presented as.
She’s not stupid, but she’s not particularly intelligent either, she’s nice, but not a saint. She has been a vampire for only a few months, but she has already lost her empathy for humans. She’s an introvert who cares deeply for her friend Fred and crush Diego. She was never inclined to fight anybody, and spent the newborn battle just sort of mingling in quiet terror.
She’s a sweet person I’m sure would have made a pleasant addition to the Cullen coven, but ultimately she’s not remarkable.
When it comes to Diego, her supposed mate... hm. For those who didn’t read the book, Riley told the newborns they had to stay in the shadows or they’d burn in the sun. Bree gets a huge crush on one of the other newborns, and they find out vampires actually sparkle. This changes everything! Diego goes to tell Riley about the sparkling. Diego goes to live on a farm after that. No, really, that’s pretty much what Riley tells everybody. Diego is fine, he’s on a very special assignment, next question. Bree eventually figures out that Diego is dead, and her grief combined with a lot of other factors lead to her concluding life is miserable. She dies thinking “Oh well, guess I had a good run.”
Not unsurprisingly, I not only don’t believe in mates, but I also don’t think Diego was anything close to it for Bree either. They were close friends, Bree found out he was dead, and had no time to process it. More, vampires feel very strongly, and this was the only truly emotional event to befall Bree. It knocked her out completely. So, that she then decides she doesn’t mind dying because there’s no point living in a world without Diego seems to me to be a reaction born of her being young (both for a vampire and a human), emotionally inexperienced, and having been hit by this news less than an hour earlier. Had she lived, she would have been just fine.
So, those are my thoughts on Bree Tanner as a person.
Bree Tanner's impact is a different matter.
I think her death was one of the catalysts for the plot of Breaking Dawn.
The vampires in Seattle all died, Victoria included. There were no one left who knew Bree, and her life would have been a moment lost in time, like tears in the rain (Sorry, couldn’t resist).
But there were the Cullens. More specifically, Carlisle.
Carlisle had spent his formative years in Volterra, and parted with Aro in friendly terms. He remained fond of Aro, and continued to think highly of him. He and Aro would have spoken of the Volturi, of the Volturi mission, of how such a law is enforced, and it is prudent to also assume that Carlisle would have witnessed at least a few trials. He came away from all that thinking of the Volturi as strict, but fair rulers.
Jasper, by comparison (I’m bringing him in because I think he’s more representative of how your average vampire who hasn’t been Aro’s boytoy for decades would view the Volturi), shivers in fright at the mere thought of the Volturi. To him they were executioners. But, again, fair. You break the law, and the Volturi descend upon you like God of the Old Testament.
Then cut to Eclipse, Victoria’s got a newborn army wreaking havoc in Seattle, attracting a lot of attention in a developed country in a time of globalized news. They’re on CNN daily. They might as well write “Fuck the Volturi” in the sky.
And the Volturi do nothing.
Now why, Carlisle and his family wonders, would they do such a thing?
Edward has all the answers, of course - that Aro is choosing not to intervene because he doesn’t like how large and powerful Carlisle’s coven has gotten, and Victoria’s newborn army will take care of that for him. Edward also goes on about how Aro desperately wants him and Alice by his side, which does prompt an “... you sure about that?” from Carlisle, but ultimately Aro’s inaction on the subject speaks for itself and Carlisle can’t make any excuses for it.
Regardless of Aro’s motives, that the Volturi would not be coming to enforce their own law became very clear. As a result of their inaction, Carlisle was forced to betray several of his own principles. He had to ask Jasper to teach the family how to kill others, he had to accept the aid of teenagers who could very well get themselves killed, he had to put his beloved family at risk, and he had to kill other vampires.
Aro’s inaction put him through hell and could have gotten his family killed. Would have, if it weren’t for the wolves.
Jane then decides to make her entrance right after the battle ended, while the fire is still going. The timing could not be more clear: the Volturi were waiting it out, letting the Cullens be culled.
We then get to Bree, who was an innocent in all the ways that counted, and not at risk of repeat offenses. Jane executes her anyway. Not just that, she makes sure to torture Bree, twice, entirely gratuitously:
“She’ll tell you anything you want to know,” Edward said through his teeth. “You don’t have to do that.”
Jane looked up, sudden humor in her usually dead eyes. “Oh, I know,” she said to Edward, grinning at him before she turned back to the young vampire, Bree. (Eclipse, page 333)
Even if the execution can be justified, the torture cannot. Jane abuses her power because she can, and there’s nothing the Cullens can do about it.
Then you have the fact that Bree had overheard a conversation between Jane and Victoria in which Jane gave Victoria explicit permission to take out the Cullens on the Volturi’s behalf. Bree replays this for Edward to hear before she dies, validating every paranoia he ever had about the Volturi. Just because he didn’t tell Bella, doesn’t mean he didn’t tell his family. He certainly would have told Carlisle and Alice.
Over the course of Eclipse, Carlisle sees the Volturi neglect to enforce their own law because culling his coven is a higher priority to them, torture and execute a mostly innocent vampire, and then he finds out that they made a deal with Victoria.
Not only would he be massively disillusioned by the Volturi, but by Aro himself. The man he met in Volterra was a lover of the arts and the academics and spoke of justice among vampires, and then Carlisle gets to experience first hand just what kind of justice this is. Aro was not the person he thought he was, and their old friendship doesn’t count for much either.
Look then to Breaking Dawn, where Carlisle has a vampiric child, but not an immortal one. Like Bree, he is innocent in all the ways that counted. This did not help Bree, and given the events of Eclipse (and remember only six months have passed), it won’t help him either. The Volturi have made it clear that they want to take out his coven, and whether or not the Cullens are actually innocent won’t matter.
The only way he can hope to slow them down, to force some kind accountability upon the Volturi (an accountability that might have preserved Bree’s life: she died because Jane had none), is to have there be witnesses to their trial.
And we get the clusterfuck called Breaking Dawn (or as I like to call it, Aro and Carlisle Break Up).
Relevant meta.

q . from what part of the canon did you take your character from ?
right  where  she  left  off  !    victoria’s  ‘  army  ’  has  been  defeated.   she  was  spared  by  the  cullen’s  only  to  be  executed  by  the  volturi  for  breaking  laws  she  was  unaware  existed,  even  though  they  knew  of  victoria’s  plan  and  allowed  it.   unlike  her  portrayal  in  the  film,   bree  accepts  her  death  as  she  does  in  the  book.
q . what gender is your character , what pronouns do they use and what do they identify as sexual / romantic orientation speaking ?
she  is  a  cis  -  female  who  uses  she  /  her  pronouns.  her  sexuality  is  undecided,   but  possibly  either  bisexual  or  pansexual.   she’s  only  ever  had  one  romantic  interest  and  he  was  killed  shortly  before  the  battle.   it  was  a  relationship  that  was  never  official  and  only  lasted  a  day.
q .  anything else you’d like to add ?
nope  !   just  be  cautious  of  reading  this.   her  life  has  been  troubled  and  very  unfortunate  and  isn’t  light  hearted  in  any  way.
introduction.
bree  was  born  in  nevada,  las  vegas.  she  thought  that  her  mother  had  abandoned  her  at  the  age  of  four,   when  in  reality  she  was  killed  by  her  abusive  father.   he  disposed  of  her   body  in  the  desert  before  packing  himself  and  bree  up,  moving  to  idaho  where  she  spent  most  of  her  life.
living  with  her  father,  she  was  isolated  from  her  peers  at  school.   she  was  anti  -  social,  withdrawn.   no  one  ever  noticed  or  paid  any  attention  to  her  home  life  despite  the  endless  warning  signs  and  evidence  leading  to  something  being  awry.   eventually,  bree  had  enough  and  ran  away.   it  was  a  few  weeks  before  her  eighteenth  birthday,   before  she’d  had  the  chance  to  graduate.   she  couldn’t  stick  it  out  until  then.   she  had  enough  saved  up  for  a  bus  ride  to  seattle,  but  no  more  than  that.
she  tried  to  make  a  life  for  herself.  unsuccessfully  applying  for  jobs,  ending  up  homeless  and  stealing,  as  well  as  dumpster  diving  for  food  regularly.   bree  slept  in  parks  and  alleys,  feeling  safest  there.   she  constantly  hid  away  from  the  cops  out  of  fear  that  they  would  send  her  back  to  her  father.
she’d  barely  been  gone  a  month  when  riley  found  her  behind  a  restaurant  hunting  for  food.  he  offered  her  a  burger,  bree  assuming  he  wanted  a  ‘ favor ’  out  of  it,  and  agreed.   not  because  he  was  handsome,  and  she  knew  she  would  give  him  what  he  wanted,  but  because  she  was  starving.
he  brought  her  to  victoria.   she  remembers  the  shrill,  high  -  pitched  voice  of  her  maker.   she  often  referred  to  her  as  a  spoiled  child  throwing  a  tantrum.  she  was  displeased  with  the  size  of  her,  but  she  needed  the  numbers.
the  other  newborns  were  violent.  bree  often  stayed  away  from  them  and  it  worked,  for  the  most  part,  though at  some  point  she  had  her  arm  ripped  off  by  jen,  which  she  accounts  was  not  at  all  pleasant,  but  she  managed  to  get  it  back  before  it  was  too  late.  she  spent  most  of  her  time  using  her  powers  to  break  into  bookstores,  reading  to  pass  the  days.  it  was  one  thing  she  always  loved  doing.
her  mother’s  bones  were  found  by  the  police  and  although  she  was  unaware  of  it,  bree  was  assumed  dead  when  they  couldn’t  find  her.  her  father  was  finally  put  away  for  his  crimes.
bree  became  close  to  a  fellow  newborn,  though  he  was  much  older  than  she  was  and  more  experienced,   riley’s  second  in  command.  together  they  fed,  hid  from  the  sunlight  only  to  find  out  that  it  wouldn’t  harm  them,  only  cause  them  to  reflect  light  like  crystals.   bree  had  previously  bought  into  everything  riley  had  instilled  in  them  to  fear.  sunlight  was  one  of  the  many  lies  he  fed  to  them.
diego  was  killed  for  telling  riley  about  the  sun.  but  bree  was  told  that  he  would  be  there  at  the  battle,  manipulated  by  riley.  she  was  only  there  to  see  him  and  to  get  away.  when  there  was  no  sign  of  him,  no  scent,  bree  knew  what  had  happened.
she  surrendered  to  the  cullens.  not  wanting  to  fight,  wanting  to  be  safe.  she  overheard  what  happened  with  riley  and  her  creator.  she  was  glad  of  it.  and  by  the  time  it  came  to  the  volturi  showing  up,  despite  the  cullens  attempting  to  take  her  in,  bree  had  accepted  death.  her  last  and  final  thoughts  were  to  edward,  asking  him  to  be  kind  to  her  friend,  fred,  if  they  ever  ran  into  each  other.
bree  doesn’t  remember  coming  to  twinrivers.   she  was  dead  on  the  battlefield  not  too  long  ago,  but  here  she  is.  alive  (  technically,  anyway  )  still  thirsty  for  blood.  still  a  killer.  but  she’s  less  than  happy  about  it.    she  arrived  shortly  before  the  lockdown.   the  first  thing  she  did  once  it  was  lifted   was  search  for  diego,  but  it  was  all  in  vain.   she’s  homeless  again.  alone.  still  oblivious  about  how  to  navigate  the  world  as  a  vampire,  much  less  in  a  town  that’s  a  haven  for  all  things  obscure.
if  you’d  like  to  read  over  her  story  in  detail,  click  here  !

"Bree Tanner is the best character Stephenie Meyer has ever written. She is the best first person Meyer ever wrote." Comment on that.
I like Bree; but she felt really similar to Bella to me in a lot of ways. Which I guess maybe was the point, in that in Eclipse the chapter she appears in is called "Mirror."
I 100% believe that Bree was literally just supposed to be "oh wow a teenage girl newborn is this what I'm going to be like?" but then something weird happened and SM got like, invested in this narrative device and started to care about Bree independent of her role in Bella's story.
I know, weird, right?
But Bree's fate was already sealed: Bree couldn't be adopted by the Cullens because that would ruin/change the Forever/Breaking Dawn ending that SM had always had in mind. So Bree died because the Volturi don't give second chances to anyone other than Bella (who is still human and apparently that's fine, but Bree having been recruited into a newborn army without a choice in the matter is guilty by association?). But SM was haunted by this vampire girl and went back and wrote the Bree Tanner book. But her ending was locked in; she couldn't save her and give her the vampire fairy tale, so we got the Romeo and Juliet thing she hinted at with E/B but couldn't follow through with because she wanted them to be happy.
And like Bella she's introverted and likes to read and is more controlled than most newborns and sure she kills people but like, they're the "dregs" of society who "won't be missed" (I mean this is a whole other kettle of fish but that's the language used in the Bree book). I was looking forward to more vampire-y vampires but for the most part I found the newborns underwhelming, as they still felt too tame and human to me, hiding out all day while the sun was out fighting over video games or whatever. And she falls in love with Diego in about 10 minutes and then is cool with dying mostly because Diego is already dead.
So, I don't know.
I might agree she's a better first person narrator; despite all the hardships in her life, she comes off as more likeable than Bella the long suffering martyr or Edward the forever tortured. Jacob in Breaking Dawn had some interesting narration too--a very different voice than E or B--but still a lot of the self-pity sort of thing going on. Bree seemed to have less of that and that was refreshing.
Which is a trap of first person narrators. You want the readers to be like "omg you poor thing your life is so hard!" but if you have your narrator articulate that ("tell") then they come off as whiny and complaining and it gets repetitive. It's better to just show their life being tough rather than have them constantly complain about, idk, the rain or their parents or their lack of a soul or the girl who loves a vampire and not them.

Bree still doesn’t fight
Bree Tanner curls behind the log, occasionally peeking out, watching the other newborns race by. They seem frenzied, sick with the scent of blood from the girl, the pet the Coven keeps and Bree just hides further. She doesn’t think of Frank, miles away, or Deigo a pile of ash somewhere. She doesn’t let her thoughts stray to the burning in her throat, or how good the human blood smells. She picks her way through the forest, refusing to walk too close on the path the other newborns chose. She can hear screaming and howling. She walks faster trying to avoid the smell of smoke. She’s not aware of how far out she is until she can see the cliffs and ocean. She stumbles into a group of vampires and she cringes away from the cloaks she recognizes. “Another one, ugh, they’re such freaks. Vegetarianism is better my ass. I bet-“ The taller man quiets himself as the tiny figure glares; Bree doesn’t look her in the eyes but the figure calls her attention anyways. “Come, let’s see how your Coven is doing, not too good if you ran.” She laughs, Bree nods to the figure as they continue back towards the forest and the clearing. She breaks from them moments later and they seem to have no bother letting her go. She circles around after hearing more howling and screaming. She stumbles trying to race from the fight and cloaks, slamming herself into a young man, who’s struggling to pull shorts on. “Son of a bitch we missed one!” He shouts gripping Bree by the back of her neck and hauling her right towards the clearing she’d been desperate to run from.
Carlisle and Esme stand slightly in front of the rest of the Coven. They know its pointless, Jane could crush all of them in a second, still Esme finds comfort in physically shielding her family. As Jane and the Volturi leave Sam and the pack slink from the forest. Carlisle turns preoccupied with treating Jacob. The rest of her coven are between hovering worried for Jacob and worried for Bella, who Edward holds close, having watched Jane torture the already dying newborns has set her too far on edge. Esme turns when she hears the branch crack; surprised when Paul throws a figure into the clearing snarling. Esme’s in front of the figure instantly, shielding her from Paul. She turns when Paul stalks off, her eyes shine as she looks at the tiny vampire. “Are you scared little one? You’re not hurt are you?” The girl looks up, her hair tangled and matted in her face. She flinches back when Esme brushes her hand against her skin, exposing her face. Carlisle turns when he hears Esme’s gasps. The girl jerks back as Carlisle walks over, he watches as she glances from him to Esme with the same golden eyes they have. “I’m a doctor, I can help you. My family, we’re vegetarians, like you and-“ The girl trembles ducking her head as she starts talking. “I don’t wanna hurt people!! Riley bit me and then he said I hadta kill people! And I didn’t want to so I ran away! I hid in the forest! I didn’t want to hurt anyone.” She nods her head feverishly. Carlisle smiles. “Like us then.” Esme rubs her hand over the girls shoulder before pulling her into a hug. “What’s your name? I’m Esme.” “Bree, Bree Tanner..” Esme nods. “How do you feel about being Bree Cullen then?” Esme smiles as Bree nods excitement flickering on her face as they pull her towards the rest of the Coven.
