🖤🙏🏾I am realizing that healing comes from within. When you look within, you find yourself and not the world, so really you’re forgiving yourself, the world has nothing and ain’t never had nothing to do with it, i’m in the middle of figuring this all out. Moving out and living on my own brought out emotions that subconsciously I didn’t know I had and so I found myself hindered by unresolved issues from the past, but what does today have to do with yesterday’s pain? So I’ve really been diving deep into the concept of healing and in result I bought the book “The Power of Now” and it’s filled with enlightening advice that makes you look at your own emotions differently and how you can actually be the thing that hinders you from finding true inner peace and happiness ☮️ Its definitely a great read. And is there a final destination for ones healing journey? I think the destination would be coming to peace with what is and what was, maybe we don’t move on, we move forward 🤔 🤯 ✨

Living in NYC has made me an observer. I find inspiration from others as they push thru this city to get to their destination. Just like me, they thrive. And I write.

Here's an incomplete poem about a girl

She has aceme on her face The mountains of pimples Looks like the Appalachian So she paints them Like morning rising Horizon Bringing in red and gold tones Like a star Bringing in red and gold tones Red like the heart Gold like a spotlight Like a halo Like a crown But she frowns Joy no longer kin to her Just a stranger who doesn't make eye contact as they stroll a lonely highway They walk by each other Shoulders millimeters away from grazing But their minds are in two different places They barely notice it She barely notices her beauty Bare face and product free All she sees is error and tragedy...

For the last dozen years teens from Virginia's award-winning Hampton Roads Youth Poets have participated in @BraveNewVoices — the world's largest youth poetry slam — alongside hundreds of voices from across the nation and beyond. In 2019 New Orleans artist and activist Brandan Odums, aka BMike, traveled to Virginia Beach and collaborated with Teens With A Purpose ( @TWPTheMovement ) to paint this wall on Virginia Beach Blvd for the @SomethingIntheWater festival. BMike says as soon as he met these amazing young people he knew he had to paint them—the perfect complement to the amazing verse of the Hampton Roads Youth Poets.  @bmike2c/

rafaelcasal | 2009/2019 challenge - let’s review by photo: 2009 I was 23yrs old. 1. touring poetry and music off of Def Poetry, 2. in a band with @daveeddiggs called THE GETBACK, 3. i was doing radio appearances from songs that had went viral on YouTube (Bay Area slang top 100 w/ @onekingkong ) @djrazberry 4. I went to Bermuda with @ajamonet & @maydadelvalle 5. GETBACK crew doing a radio spot with @wonwayposibul 6. Hosted @bravenewvoices, where I got my start in poetry nine years earlier 7. Was doing solo rap shows (this is Michigan with @jayfab_vs_theworld ) 8. Hosted Madison Wisconsin’s annual teen slam competition 9. Was building the first scholarship based undergraduate arts program @omaifirstwave at @uwmadison as it’s creative director while taking classes towards my BA at the same university I taught at in secret at night.

The artist hustle is the hardest hustle. Nobody who isn’t doing it really understands how much a labor of love it is, and for some of us, how many years we’ve been at it. 2009 is about 9 years into my artistic performance life, So we can call this right before the halfway point to now. Less concerned with if I look like I’ve aged or not, I love this adventure, I love the people i have gotten to work with and love and keep as community. I love that so many of my collaborators, students-turned-peers and friends ARE STILL IN MY LIFE, and still thriving in their art. That’s the real glow up.
