"A.P. TUREAUD"
by BMike
"Resist, by all lawful means, any and all efforts to deny us our rights."   —A.P. Tureaud
A.P. Tureaud Sr (1899–1972) was the New Orleans NAACP attorney during the Civil Rights Movement, and with the help from the likes of Thurgood Marshall he filed the lawsuit ending the system of Jim Crow segregation in New Orleans. Tureaud Sr met his wife Lucille in the 1920s in the rooftop garden of The Pythian building at Gravier St and Loyola Ave, and almost a century later local New Orleans artist and activist Brandan Odums, aka BMike, portrayed the couple inside the new @PythianMarket food hall downstairs.  @bmike2c/

❤🎨 #ArtIsAWeapon Check out these beautiful new murals by @bmike2c and @marthalicia of the legendary #jazz #artist/#activist #DizzyGillespie, located at 229 W. 135th Street in #Harlem.
The John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie 100th Anniversary Mural is presented by the global street art and human rights campaign @educationisnotacrime (www.notacrime.me) and @streetartanarchy, which curates high impact public arts projects (streetartanarchy.com). The wall space was donated by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.
(From Harlem World Magazine @harlemworldmagazine): “Dizzy frequently championed the Baha’i principle of the oneness of humanity. His life as an African-American man who overcame marginalization and discrimination through music and faith lends his story to the mission of Education Is Not A Crime. Dizzy Gillespie, born in South Carolina on October 21, 1917, was a celebrated African-American jazz musician and an outspoken member of the worldwide Baha’i community. This year would be his 100th birthday; he passed away in 1993 in New Jersey.”
In his 1979 autobiography “Dizzy Gillespie: To Be, or Not … to Bop”, written with Al Fraser, Dizzy said: “When I encountered the Baha’i faith … I believed in the oneness of mankind. I believed we all come from the same source, that no race of people is inherently superior to any other. And they teach unity, I latched onto that.”
“By producing this mural of Dizzy Gillespie in Harlem, we pay tribute to an African-American jazz genius, and a humanitarian … Dizzy is exactly what our world needs. Today, we are surrounded by hatred, xenophobia and racism. Dizzy’s belief in the oneness of humanity, inspired by his faith, shows us the way forward. We need to tell younger generations about the artistry and ideals of an African-American icon.” - Maziar Bahari, founder of Education Is Not A Crime.

"SOMETHING IN THE WATER"
by BMike
“Waters will not move without waves. And our current depends on you. You decide where we wash up. Whether that means landing in clearings. Or clutters of chaos. Young minds yearn for living waters. Guided rivers flow into oceans of opportunity. So yes there is something in the water. IT’S US ” —Hampton Roads Youth Poets
For the last dozen years teens from Virginia's award-winning Hampton Roads Youth Poets have participated in @BraveNewVoices — the world's largest youth poetry slam — alongside hundreds of voices from across the nation and beyond. In 2019 New Orleans artist and activist Brandan Odums, aka BMike, traveled to Virginia Beach and collaborated with Teens With A Purpose ( @TWPTheMovement ) to paint this wall on Virginia Beach Blvd for the @SomethingIntheWater festival. BMike says as soon as he met these amazing young people he knew he had to paint them—the perfect complement to the amazing verse of the Hampton Roads Youth Poets.  @bmike2c/

STUDIO BE
by BMike
"My solo show “Ephemeral Eternal” is a culmination of everything I learned from Project BE and Exhibit BE as well as exploring my truth as an artist."  —Brandan "BMike" Odums
After 6 months preparing a complex visual commentary on civil rights, Hurricane Katrina, and the Black experience BMike opened his 35,000 sq ft New Orleans studio to the public in early 2016. An activist artist who is the recipient of an NAACP Image Award BMike's exhibit has gained national attention and drawn visitors from around the world. With a stunning mural of a young African American girl painted on the front of his studio facing Royal St in the Bywater neighborhood, BMike balanced that with this ode to creativity on the back, facing Dauphine St.  @bmike2c/

"KING BOLDEN"
by BMike
"Jazz made its mark in the 400 block of S Rampart Street in clubs such as Little Gem Saloon, Iroquois Theater, and Eagle Saloon. Along with countless others, Buddy Bolden and his band fused ragtime and blues to create a new sound on "The Ramp." Today their legacy continues to be played around the world." —BMike
New Orleans born Charles Joseph "Buddy" Bolden (1877–1931) was known for his loud sound and improvisational skills and has been referred to as the father of jazz—even though the term did not come into common usage until later. Sadly no known recordings of Bolden exist today. In 2018 internationally renowned New Orleans artist and activist Brandan Odums, aka BMike, painted the first of three "One Time In New Orleans" murals planned by New Orleans Tourism and Marketing to celebrate the city's tricentennial. @NOCCA.Nola  graduate BMike's celebration of the city's jazz heritage is on the side of @LittleGemSaloon on S Rampart.  @bmike2c/  @visitneworleans/

“THE FUTURE OF DETROIT”
by BMike and Rick Williams
“They tried to bury us. They didn’t know we were seeds.” Adapted from a 1978 Greek poem, these lines have reached out and touch audiences around the world, becoming a common rallying cry at the @Fams2gether protests of July, 2018. A month later New Orleans activist, artist, and filmmaker Brandan Odums, aka BMike, was in Detroit for @MuralsInTheMarket and partnered with  photographer Rick Williams on this powerful new application of the idea. Williams spotted young Evan with his mother at the @1xRun welcome dinner for the event and thought he would be “the perfect embodiment of the theme.” With Evan’s permission Williams and BMike went to work and within a few days this poignant Adelaide St statement was ready to share with Detroit and the world.  @rickwlms/  @bmike2c/

#ArtIsAWeapon #JamesBaldwin 🎨 by @bmike2c "Artists are here to disturb the peace." - James Baldwin, born on this day (August 2) in 1924. Baldwin's prophetic, powerful, unflinchingly-honest thoughts and words on racism, class and oppression in America still ring true. In his honor, today is perfect for viewing @iamnotyournegro and reading some of his many books. May he continue to inspire and empower us to activate our creative and collective powers to fight on... #Artist #Activist #Author #Liberator #Prophet #Poet #Playwright #SocialCritic #TruthTeller #BlackBrilliance #BlackCreativeGenius #IAmNotYourNegro #NoNameInTheStreet #Harlem #SocialJustice #CreativesKeepCreating #BrandanOdums #NewOrleans #NOLA #TraScapades . ✊🏽#ArtIsAWeapon #FredHampton #Revolutionary #NeverForget 🎨 @bmike2c From @georgejacksonuniversity - 🐉 GJU Remembers Chairman Fred Hampton & Mark Clark Of The Chicago Black Panther Party Who Was Assassinated on This Day December 4th 1969 By Chicago Police & The FBI! The FBI encouraged and helped the Chicago police launch an all-out assault on the Panthers in Chicago. The Black Panthers leaders were physically attacked and their offices were raided multiple times, including twice in July 1969 and once in October. During these raids over 100 Panthers were arrested. As another form of harassment, in May 1969 Hampton was prosecuted on ridiculous charges of stealing $72 worth of ice cream in Maywood two years earlier, and sentenced to two to five years in jail, though he managed to obtain a bond appeal and was released in August 1969. The government’s neutralization campaign culminated in the brutal raid on Hampton’s apartment on Dec. 4, 1969 in which he was killed in his sleep, with his pregnant wife in bed next to him. The Chicago Police Department had been given the layout of the apartment by an FBI informant who had infiltrated the Panthers. Hampton was also drugged that night with the powerful barbiturate secobarbitol by the FBI informant so that he wouldn’t wake up during the police assault. #chairmanfredhampton #markclark #fredhampton #cointelpro #BlackPantherParty #BlackPower #AmericanHistory #GeorgeJacksonUniversity #GeorgeJacksonRadio #TraScapades #ArtIsAWeapon #BrandanOdums #BlackArtists #paintwhereitaint
