"A notable example in birds is the zebra finch. These birds have lateralised brain structures in the face of a common steroid signal, providing strong evidence for a non-hormonal primary sex mechanism regulating brain differentiation."

A longtime birdwatcher in Pennsylvania had what he called a “once-in-a-lifetime” bird sighting — a rare cardinal that appeared to be half male and half female.

“I had a once-in-a-lifetime, one in a million bird encounter!” said James Hill, who described the bird, known as a bilateral gynandromorph northern cardinal, as “a bird divided right down the middle, half male and half female.”

He got the homeowner’s permission to snap pictures of it.

Hill, citing National Geographic and Daniel Hooper, a postdoctoral fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in 2019, said gynandromorphs, called “half-siders,�� are rare but known.

“They likely occur across all species of birds,” Hooper told National Geographic, “but we’re only likely to notice them in species where the adult males and females look distinct from each other.”

So being the curious cat that I am, I went to Google scholar to find out a possible reason for this action in animals (and me and maybe other humans) and this is what I got:

Based on previous investigations on the head turning and the lateralised brain pattern of human speech processing in dogs, we hypothesised that head-tilts may be related to increased attention and could be explained by lateralised mental functions. (Link available)

I can't say I found much else but redditors suspected it had to do with hearing or seeing something better, I can't find a particular academic paper that easily to prove that but it seems logical. Personally, I tilt my head because it feels like my right brain gets (not heavier per say) but it helps me process what is going on. Like I'm shifting my neurons to the side that can help me understand the situation lol.

Obsessed with animals that don’t immediately understand something and just tilt their head about it. Does it make any more sense at a 45° angle, bud?
