this brand-new article by The Race suggests jake dixon could be getting a gresini ride next year thanks to some behind-the-scenes help from british broadcasters. it's been clear for ages that english distributors and dorna alike want a brit in the top series, but is this kind of favoritism unfair?
it's not just nepotism -- TNT Sport knows having a british rider in MotoGP would boost their viewership. it's product placement.
#they've tried this before (albeit without direct involvement) - how else would riders like sam lowes or bradley smith get into motogp?#british riders sell. they're lucrative#motogp

What happened before the famous handshake after Catalunya 2016
After Luis Salom’s fatal crash, the Safety Commission discussed changing Turn 10 and Turn 12 (where Salom fell) of the track. However only 10 of the 21 MotoGP riders attended the Safety Commission meeting. Jorge believed that the modification to Turn 10 favored Honda and expressed disappointment as the reigning world champion for not being invited to the Safety Commission. And Marc countered, stating that the Safety Commission is open to all riders and meets every Friday at 5:30 in the same place.
Valentino agreed with the Turn 12 modification, but likewise said the Turn 10 modification was unnecessary. This led to dissatisfaction among some other riders. Although 11 riders were not present, it was clear that rider leaders like Valentino and Jorge had more say and that meant they had more responsibility.
In fact, Valentino is one of the founders of the Safety Commission, established after Daijiro Kato’s accident in 2003 (alongside Loris Capirossi). Despite being one of the few riders who never missed regular meetings staged at every race, Valentino stopped attending Safety Commission meetings since the 2015 Sepang incident, with the general perception being that he didn’t want to face Marc.
“Valentino was a guy that didn’t turn up at the Safety Commission, hasn’t assumed any of his duties - hasn’t assumed any of his duties throughout the season - so he can’t comment. He has not been to the Safety Commission once this year. Not once since Malaysia [clash with Marquez]. So he spat his dummy. So why spit your dummy again when you did nothing? You have no leg to stand on? He hasn’t been once this year, so he doesn’t have any reason to speak about this decision. Yesterday was the day to assume his responsibilities. Whatever problem he has - that he is not going to the Safety Commission any more - he should swallow his pride and turn up there and do his job as a MotoGP rider, to look after safety, but then he didn’t. So don’t say, ‘oh, it should be changed’. I don’t care what he says.” —Bradley Smith
Why has Valentino since Malaysia not been going to the Safety Commission? We need Valentino. We need him and his experience. We also need Jorge, who is never going. He cannot say that. This is really stupid and not respectful to the riders that went yesterday. You are saying that there are corners that you know are dangerous but you don’t go to the Safety Commission to say that. If someone crashes at that corner [that you think is dangerous] next year and dies what are you going to do? You’d say ‘Fuck, I knew this was dangerous.’ We have a big opportunity to show to the world that we are good people. What happened in Malaysia [with Marquez]? Fuck, he can’t forget. I had something like that in my past and I understand the situation. It’s something so important and yesterday one guy died. If there was one day that you have to go to the Safety Commission it was yesterday because it’s about respect.” —Pol Espargaro
So after the race, there was that handshake, and Vale said it was the right thing to do. He believes things have changed not only between him and Marc but among all riders, and they should stick together. He also said that he would consider returning to the Safety Commission.
Well, it seems I’m not a consistent person at all. I’m already blogging. But today changed things.
Yesterday I was upset with Vale. He hugely, hugely disappointed me. I was hurt by the comments he made on the track layout change. I was disappointed with him, Jorge and Movistar Yamaha too. They were so cynical about it: they should have thought first about Luis, his family, the riders, and not about eventual advantages or disadvantages the new layout would create.
And then journalists of course worsened it all, and the riders started to accuse the ones who were not present at the safety meeting (even if justified): it really upset me because I felt like all that tension was disrespectful to Luis.
Fortunately Vale retracted, saying that those were necessary changes, and that this morning he actually understood that they needed to change turn 9 too because the run-off area was small there as well.
Anyway I expected better of Vale, not only because I’m a fan of him, but because he has always been at the forefront in terms of concerning himself with riders’ safety.
He is one of the original founders of the Safety Commision (for f**k’s sake!), he created it together with Loris Capirossi way back in 2003, after Daijiro Kato’s death. He was one of the first riders who wanted and demanded that riders could finally have a voice. He had been shocked by the way they treated Daijiro, by the fact that race direction didn’t stop the race, that they didn’t stop the ceremony and the podium celebrations, like nothing had happened, and only after all that they told the riders about Daijiro’s severe conditions. The riders, who now were united in the Commision, finally were able to remove Suzuka from the calendar, because it was an unsafe circuit, despite upsetting Honda.
Since then he had always been present at every single one of the safety meetings and he had always tried to improve the safety of the tracks and of the riders, for example by testing Dainese’s airbag.
But then since Malaysia last year he stopped going and then yesterday made those comments. I repeat, I expected better of him. He shouldn’t have made personal issues get in the way of such important things as rider’s lives.
Fortunately, it seems like last night he reflected and pondered and sleeping brought him some good advice. Unfortunately, something very tragic had to happen to make him finally realize it.
I really hope the interaction with Marc was not just a one time thing and that it was made not only because of the circumstances, I want to believe it was heartfelt. I hope it doesn’t stop. I know that the relationship will never be like before (unfortunately) but I hope that they continue to behave, to acknowledge eachother and congratulate eachother like they did today. And I hope things will start to get less tense from now on (also with Lorenzo), even if it takes time.
I was really happy to see such a good race between Marc and Vale (and quite sorry for Lorenzo). I was glad to hear them say they were happy too about the race, the battle, and that they thought they could honour Luis in that way, by racing motorcycles at the best of their ability, the thing Luis loved the most.
I hope Vale decides to attend the safety meetings again. As much as strong is the will to win, to beat, to compete, there are things that are much more important.
[And I friggin’ expect and hope Italian fans behave themselves in Misano (I was ashamed by the kind of show the most extreme ones put on in Mugello).]
I never knew a simple handshake could make me feel so happy and relieved.
I really needed it.
DEP Luis <3
Sorry for the rant.

RATING THE RIDERS: ROUND 16 - JAPAN
MM93 - 10: All Hail to King Marquez ! May his reign be even longer than Queen Elizabeth II !
VR46 - 7: The M1’s poor ambitions are outweighing Vale’s talent. And Lin isn’t doing anything about it !
AI29 - 3: The maniac crashed out of the race BUT THANKS GOD, he did not scratch his pretty Instagram worthy face.
AD04 - 7: One of the many differences between a Great Rider and a Champion has to be being able to deal with title pressure. Two years in a row that Andrea is lacking in that department... #atleasthetried
DP9 - 5: I’ll be honest, i did not even saw him during the race. Maybe i should have woken up for every session to see a glimpse of Danilo...
CC35 - 8: I’ve heard Cal sais he hoped to finish in front of Lorenzo in the standings to « show his value ». Has someone told him yet that Jorge hasn’t even been racing lately ? No ? Well...
SR45 - 3: We know you adore Marc, but that’s no reason to try and broke him so you could have him all for yourself buddy.. ;-)
AR42 - 8: Slowly but surely someone is finally getting there. And it’s a joy to see!
BS38 - 7: Is that some real progress that we’re seeing with the KTM ?!?!! 👀
MV25 - 6: Maverick, sweety, it’s decided. You’re SO getting race start private lessons during the winter.
AB19 - 8: Jorge might be grumpy and forced to stay at home but at least it’s making someone else happy. Cheers to Alvaro for getting a well deserved opportunity !!
