Boxing Day
The best way to celebrate the day is to take part in festivities in a country where Boxing Day is a bank holiday or public holiday. Watch some soccer, rugby, or cricket games, or go on a traditional fox hunt. If you can’t be in a country where these events are taking place, you could still get together with family and friends and eat leftovers from Christmas, or make some foods traditionally eaten on Boxing Day. You could also go shopping, as this is another important part of the day in many countries.
Boxing Day takes place the day after Christmas and is primarily observed in the United Kingdom, where it started, as well as in countries that were once part of the British crown. There are a few possible theories as to how it got started, but its exact origin is unclear.
One theory says it was inspired by Christmas boxes. In seventeenth-century Great Britain, boxes holding a present or gratuity were given to tradesman and workers in service industries for their previous year’s work. This went back to an even earlier tradition where servants would wait on and serve their rich masters on Christmas Day and would visit and celebrate with their own families on the day after Christmas. Their rich masters would sometimes give them a box with leftover food, a bonus, or another type of gift.
The day may have also stemmed from alms boxes that were put in Anglican churches on Christmas Day or during Advent and opened on the day after Christmas. These boxes collected money for the poor. Similarly, boxes were put outside of churches to collect money on Saint Stephen’s Day, which is held the day after Christmas. The events in the song “Good King Wenceslas” take place on Saint Stephen’s Day. The song recounts a story of King Wenceslas, a Bohemian king of the tenth century, bringing food and wine to a poor man. There is one other possible source for the beginning of the day. Ships once set sail containing a box of money for good luck. If the trip was a success, the box would be given to a priest, and he would open it on Christmas and give its contents to the poor.
Boxing Day has been a bank holiday in England, Wales, North Ireland, and Canada since 1871. It is celebrated in Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Nigeria. It is celebrated in Hong Kong, where the United Kingdom held sovereignty until 1997. In Ireland and in parts of Spain, it is known as Saint Stephen’s Day. It is celebrated as Second Christmas Day in some European countries, such as Poland, Hungary, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands; it is celebrated as such in Scandinavia as well. Boxing Day is generally not celebrated in the United States.
In some countries where it is celebrated as a bank holiday or public holiday, it is observed a day or two after December 26. If December 26 takes place on a Saturday, it may be observed the following Monday. If December 26 is on a Sunday, it may be observed on the following Tuesday. This is not always the case, however, as it is often observed on a Sunday if it falls on a Sunday.
Boxing Day is a day of the gathering of family and friends. Leftovers from Christmas are commonly eaten. Popular foods include baked ham, mince pies, Christmas cakes, and other desserts. In many countries of celebration, it is a shopping day similar to Black Friday. Sales take place and many retailers run them the whole week. Although, in some places, such as in parts of Canada, stores aren’t allowed to be open, in order to give families time to be together instead.
Sports are an important part of Boxing Day. In the United Kingdom, the top football (soccer) leagues of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland play games. Lower leagues play games as well, and rugby leagues also hold matches. In various countries, events of other sports, such as cricket, horse racing, yacht racing, hockey, and boxing are often held to celebrate the day. Fun runs and swims in the cold English Channel take place. Fox hunting meets have been held for hundreds of years. A law passed in 2004, which went into effect the following year, banned the use of dogs to attack animals during hunts. But hunters have still used their dogs to chase artificial scents on the day, and have still gone on hunts where dogs are used to flush out foxes, but not to attack them.
Boxing Day, also known as Saint Stephen’s Day and Second Christmas Day, is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on December 26th.

Want to comfort and celebrate your child losing baby teeth with a memorable tooth fairy tradition? Well, don’t tell anyone…But, since he’s a dentist, my dad knows her personally. 🧚
I’m here to fill you in on the best ways to celebrate the tooth fairy, plus what she’s paying out these days and how to get her to email your child a personal congratulations on losing a tooth.
(Want us to send your child an email from the tooth fairy? You can skip to the section on how to write a tooth fairy letter, or just fill out the form right here.)

When the Tooth Fairy is Your Dentist Dad
The tooth fairy remains one of my most vivid memories from childhood. Perhaps having a father as a dentist will do that.
When I was seven years old, I accidentally swallowed a loose tooth during a baseball game. I was devastated that the tooth fairy wouldn’t be able to come. My parents acted disappointed along with me.
Yet, lo and behold, that night, she did come. The next morning, I woke up to a hand-written note explaining that she had flown down my mouth to retrieve the tooth. This magical visitor warned me to be more careful next time, as it was quite the ordeal for her and she had many other children to visit that night.
But this was all over 20 years ago. As I prepare to carry on the tradition with my own daughter, I wanted to find out—what’s changed? What hasn’t? What does playing the tooth fairy for my child look like in 2019?
And, to be honest, I had some reservations about “lying” to our daughter. Personally, I was devastated when I learned that Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, and the tooth fairy weren’t real at the ripe old age of 10 (I know, I know).
What does a tooth fairy do?
First, a child loses a baby tooth and places it under their pillow or on their nightstand. The tooth fairy visits while the child sleeps, taking the tooth and exchanging it with a coin, a note or receipt, or a few dollars.
But is that all the tooth fairy does?
I’ll be honest…Even though I had happy memories of this mystical experience from childhood, I questioned whether I wanted to carry on the tradition with my child. Isn’t it lying? And isn’t it a bizarre thing to be exchanging old body parts for money?
But the more I learned, the more I realized that the tooth fairy is actually a crucial part of a child’s development during what can be a scary time.
Perhaps that explains why the origins of the tooth fairy extend hundreds of years back. Some report the Tooth Fairy showing up in print as far back as 1927, and perhaps as far back as the beginning of human history.
According to Michael Higston, a reporter from Salon, “Every recorded human culture has some kind of tradition surrounding the disposal of a child’s lost baby teeth.”
Here are a couple stories shared with me in a Facebook group of fun tooth fairy experiences:
“I didn’t grow up in the U.S. and there’s no tooth fairy where I come from. You sing a song for the mouse to take your tooth and bring you a nice, shiny one instead and throw it on the roof. That’s what I’ve been doing with my kids. Nowadays they ask why the tooth fairy doesn’t come to our house.”
“Our tooth fairy is named Lucinda. She’s a good fairy, but she’s a bit absent-minded, as fairies tend to be. Sometimes she’d lose her way and may take a few days to get here; sometimes she’d leave a coin but forgets to take the tooth. Last night she took only 1 of the 2 teeth under the pillow but left a few gold coins. We talk about Lucinda’s antics endearingly. We think she is Lucinda in Ella Enchanted and we think she will come back for the tooth she absent-mindedly left behind last night.”
To Provide Comfort in Pain & Fear
The tooth fairy myth offers comfort during this strange and uncomfortable time, and provides magic and even meaning for children in a developmentally appropriate way.
Losing a tooth can be quite scary, especially for younger children.
This is something I had forgotten as an adult—but there’s the anxiety of the long period where you have a wiggly tooth and you’re waiting for it to come out. I remember refusing to let anybody touch by wiggly tooth, even as my parents begged me to let them just take it out—it got so loose that it was actually leaning to one side!
I was protective of the tooth, anxious about the pain, and unsure of what it would be like to lose it. Once the tooth did come out (my dad had to pull it out), there was pain and blood.
The tooth fairy is the celebration of a milestone as well as comfort to children through what can be a scary or uncomfortable transition. It’s traumatic for a child to lose a body part, especially for the first time!
To Celebrate and Motivate
And for other kids who aren’t afraid, losing a tooth is something to celebrate. The tooth fairy marks the occasion for both parents and kids. Who could complain about adding a little magic to a child’s life?
Some tooth fairies leave a note along with money to praise the child for good dental hygiene habits and oral health. This can be extremely motivating for a child and provides motivation to brush and floss.
What does the tooth fairy look like?
Depending on where you live, the tooth fairy might not be a “fairy” at all. Children’s teeth are taken night after night by mice, tissues, and even trees. We share some stories from around the world in the next section, but here’s a fun map of a few of the ways the tooth fairy is depicted.
Ask your child! “What do YOU think she looks like?” Guaranteed, you’ll get an interesting answer!
Tooth Fairy Stories & Traditions Around the World
Since nearly every culture in the world marks the loss of baby teeth in different ways, I searched for what this looks like in countries around the globe.
In Spanish-speaking countries, France, as well as Belgium, children leave their lost teeth under their pillow for a little mouse. The American tooth fairy is not dissimilar from el Ratóncito Pérez. This mouse collects the tooth in exchange for a coin, similar to the tooth fairy.
In many Asian countries—including India, China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam—children throw their lost tooth on the roof or bury it, depending on whether the lost tooth came from the upper or lower jaw.
Hence the title of this book, which details traditions from all over the world when children lose a tooth: Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.
Here are some of the ways the “tooth fairy” celebrates lost baby teeth in various countries, quoted from Throw Your Tooth on the Roof:
North America
United States/Canada: We celebrate with the tooth fairy, who visits during the night to pay us a few dollars for losing a tooth. Sometimes, she leaves a note!
Mexico: “I leave my tooth in a box on the bedside table in hopes that El Ratón, the magic mouse, will take my tooth and bring me some money. He leaves more money for a front tooth.”
Navajo: “My mother saves my tooth until my mouth stops hurting. We take my tooth to the southeast, away from our house. We bury the tooth on the east side of a healthy young sagebrush, rabbitbrush or pinyon tree because we believe that east is the direction associated with childhood.”
Yellowknife Déné: My mother or grandmother takes my tooth and puts it in a tree and then my family dances around it. This makes certain that my new tooth will grow in as straight as a tree.
Central America & the Caribbean
Costa Rica: “My mother takes my tooth and has it plated with gold and made into an earring for me to wear.”
Dominican Republic: “I throw my tooth on the roof of my house so a mouse can come take it away and bring me a better one. Sometimes I get money when I do this.”
El Salvador: “I put my tooth under my pillow. My father says that during the night a rabbit will come. It will take my tooth and leave me some money.”
Guatemala: “I put my tooth under my pillow and wait for El Ratéon to leave me some money.”
South America
Argentina: “I put my tooth in a glass of water. During the night a little mouse called el Ratóncito will come and drink all the water, take my tooth, and leave me some coins or candy in the empty glass.”
Brazil: “I throw my tooth outside and say this poem: Lovely birds, dear birds, take away this tooth of mine and bring another one to me.” The birds only take clean teeth so I must brush my teeth every day.”
Colombia: “I put my tooth under my pillow and wait for a mouse called El Ratón Miguelito to take my tooth and leave money in its place.”
Chile: “I give my tooth to my mother. She will have it made into a charm, set in gold or silver, so I can wear it as a necklace or an earring.”
Venezuela: “I put my tooth under my pillow. While I am asleep, a mouse will take the tooth and bring me some coins.”
Europe
Turkey: “If my parents want me to grow up to graduate from school, they might bury my tooth in the garden of the university. If they hope I will become a doctor, they bury it in the garden of a hospital, or they bury it in a soccer field so I will be a good soccer player.”
Denmark: “I put my tooth under my pillow at night and wait for the tooth fairy called Tand Feen to take my tooth and leave me some money.”
England: “When I go to sleep, I put my tooth under my pillow and wait for the Tooth Fairy to come.”
France: “I put my tooth under my pillow. A mouse, La Petite Souris, will come to take it and leave a gift for me.”
Sweden: “I put my tooth in a glass of water. In the morning my tooth will be gone and a coin will be in the glass.”
Africa
Cameroon: “I throw my tooth over the roof, shouting, “Take this bad tooth and bring me a new one.” Then I hop around my house on one foot and everyone laughs.”
Egypt: “I wrap my tooth in some cotton or a tissue and take it outside. I say, “Shining sun, shining sun, take this buffalo’s tooth and bring me a bride’s tooth.” Then I throw the tooth high up, at the eye of the sun. (The Arabic word for bride is aroussa, which also means a candy or sweet.)”
Mali: “I throw my tooth in the chicken coop. The next day I might find a big fat hen in the coop and my mother will make chicken soup.”
Nigeria: “I hold my tooth in my fist with eight stones to make a total of nine (a girl will hold six stones and her tooth to make seven). Next, I close my eyes, say my name out loud, count to the number in my fist, and say, “Oh, I want my tooth back!” Then I throw them and run away. It is very important to run away.”
South Africa: “I leave my tooth in a slipper in my room. Tonight a mouse will come, take my tooth, and leave me a gift. My sister is afraid of mice so she left her slipper outside her door. The mouse left her a present anyway.”
Asia
China: “I put my upper tooth at the foot of my bed and the bottom tooth on the roof. My parents say that it will make my new tooth grow in faster.”
Kazakhstan: “I drop my tooth under the bathtub and say, “Mouse, mouse, bring me a new tooth, please.” We don’t have any mice in our apartment but I do it anyway.”
Kyrgyzstan: “I roll my tooth in bread and give it to an animal, preferably to a mouse because they have healthy sharp white teeth that grow quickly. If I feed it to a dog, I might get ugly yellow dog teeth.”
Russia: “My mother said to put my tooth in a mouse hole in the ground.”
Lithuania: “I keep my tooth as a keepsake.”
India: “I throw my tooth on the roof and ask the sparrow to bring me a new one.”
Sri Lanka: “I close my eyes and say, “Squirrel, squirrel, take this tooth and give me a new one.” Then I throw the tooth on the roof and run into the house without looking.”
Philippines: “I hide my tooth in a special place and make a wish. A year later, if I can still find my tooth, I can make another wish.”
Australia & New Zealand
Aboriginal Australians: “My family helps me put my tooth inside the shoot of a pandanus plant so that when the pandanus grows into a tree, my tooth will grow too. There are spirits in the pandanus leaves that will look after me while my tooth is growing.”
Australia: “I put my tooth under my pillow and wait for the Tooth Fairy to take my tooth and bring me some money.”
New Zealand-Maori: “I put my tooth under my pillow. My parents will collect the tooth and give me a small gift. Then they will throw my tooth into the mighty river, the Waikato. My tribe is named after the river.”

8 of Our Favorite Tooth Fairy Ideas to Celebrate Losing Baby Teeth
1. Use foreign currency.
A coin from Canada or Mexico could indicate where the Tooth Fairy’s last visit was, and maybe spur a fun conversation for a kid who loves travel or geography!
2. Give a toy or book instead of money.
You know your kid best—and hey, wouldn’t it be fun to get to be Santa more than once a year?
I also love this toothbrush to encourage fun toothbrushing time, if you’d like to get a more dental-specific gift.
3. Use Sacagawea coins for added whimsy.
Go to the bank and stock up with a roll of gold Sacagawea coins. A $1 coin costs $1 and you can get them at the bank. They’re legal tender!
There are 20 primary teeth, so get 20 coins if you don’t want to make a second trip to the bank.
4. Have the tooth fairy send your child a gift.
Gift a tooth pillow or a fun monster pillow with a tooth fairy receipt notepad. I love these for anyone worried their child will recognize their handwriting but who still wants to leave a note! Plus, it comes from the tooth fairy herself.
Have a more tech-loving child? Especially as your little one loses baby teeth and is learning to read, we’d love to send them a personalized email from the tooth fairy.
All you have to do is click the button below and enter your email, name, and child’s name.
Get an Email from the Tooth Fairy
5. Use a printed tooth chart.
Print out a chart to let your child see their tooth losing progress. This lets them take an active part in their mouth.
When kids do this, they take care of their teeth for life, so it’s much more than just a fun tradition!
6. Write down how it fell out in a little journal.
These stories are fun! Snap a photo of your child for the baby book for memories they’ll one day be able to share with their children.
7. Share the reality of why the good fairy is a celebrated fictional character.
For parents like me who are worried about “lying” to their children, check out this book which was recommended to me by several moms: The (Wonderful) Truth About Santa.
One reviewer put it best:
“Miraculously, this book tells the real truth about Santa Claus in a way that makes it even more joyous and beautiful. If you have young children and celebrate this aspect of Christmas, you need this book at some point.
“If you’d rather not deceive your children about the reality of Santa, you can begin reading this book to them now. If you prefer to take the “Santa is real (and literal)” approach, this book can help you explain it to them once they discover the truth.”
8. Go all out with the fairy experience.
Amazon sells pixie or fairy dust that you can sprinkle on the money left by the bedside, around the house or, if you really want to go all out, you can sprinkle the dust outside the window and down the street!
Whatever your particular brand of whimsy, leaving “evidence” of the tooth fairy’s visit can help create a magical and exciting experience.
How much does the tooth fairy leave these days?

How to Write a Tooth Fairy Letter
There WILL be a time when you are busy and forget…so tell the kids you have to email the fairy for a tooth pick up. That way, they know to blame you for forgetting to notify the tooth fairy instead of the fairy for having fallible magic.
If you’d like to send us an email, we have a partnership with the Tooth Fairy herself and will respond to your child! Just click the button below to enter your information.
Get an Email from the Tooth Fairy
Have a forgetful Tooth Fairy in your house? You’ll want to hang on to this email address so you’ll be able to send a note to her supervisor and act just as disappointed along with your child. (You’ll even be able to respond to the tooth fairy’s email here at Ask the Dentist!)
The tooth fairy also sometimes leaves notes in tiny cursive, written with a sparkly purple gel pen. The notes can answer anything! Think about these options:
Questions left by the kids (Where do you live? How old are you?)
Comments on how long it had been since she has visited
Plights about how tough it was to get to our house on a windy night
How excited the tooth fairy was to see a clean room
Resources
If you love printables and creative giveaways as much as me, you’ll love these resources for celebrating the tooth fairy:
Scholastic’s Letter to the Tooth Fairy — Help your child write a letter to the fairy about their lost tooth experience and teach them good vocabulary!
Party with Unicorn’s Printables — From a tooth fairy certificate in pink or blue, to a printable door hanger, to a box to store a lost tooth, these free printables are a ton of fun.
Party with Unicorn’s Tooth Fairy Coloring Pages — Got a little one who can’t get enough of creating art? These sweet coloring pages are perfect for celebrating a visit from the good fairy.
Momdot’s Tooth Fairy Receipt — Train ‘em young to keep those receipts! 😉 Seriously, though, your kid may love a personalized reminder of the tooth they lost.
Tooth Fairy Pressed Penny — No printer? Want a more tangible gift your child can keep through adulthood? This pressed penny keepsake is a perfect option.
Celebrating Childhood
It’s not just an outdated tradition—it’s important to help kids with a major milestone.
Some parents don’t make it so literal—they tell the kids, “we pretend the Tooth Fairy comes.” Some parents go all out. Some parents abandon the tradition altogether—who needs yet another thing? You know your kid and yourself best.
“For this kind of thing, we love to do the traditions, but I say something like “we pretend the tooth fairy comes and does x y z” instead of “the tooth fairy comes and does x y z”. It’s like a fun game we play together which kids love to do with adults, and still feels real and very magical to small children, but also doesn’t set us up for a potential moment of betrayal down the road.”
Our daughter is only two years old, so I don’t know what we’ll do for her when she loses her first tooth.
But what I do know is that the Tooth Fairy will definitely be paying her a visit—whether it’s with a toy, a note, a little Tooth Fairy door, or a shiny gold coin.
I can’t wait to give her the same magical experience that I shared with my dad when I was a kid. Yes, it’s kind of an odd tradition, but why not create a new memory with your child and have fun with it? Otherwise, it’ll be just another day.
My advice—you do you! With our daughter, we like to make every tradition our own with a little spin on it. Lower your expectations and see where it leads you.
You and your child may have funny stories to laugh about years from now!

Eyes focused on Ronaldo's return to Manchester United... Live TV broadcasts in the UK fail, soaring ticket prices 먹튀검증
먹튀검증먹튀사이트먹튀검증사이트먹튀 검증 먹튀 사이트 먹튀 검증 사이트
Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo (36), who wore his home Manchester United jersey, joined the team training. Expectations for Ronaldo's second Manchester United debut are also rising.
Manchester United said on their website on the 8th that "Ronaldo enjoyed his first day of return at Carrington (Man United training ground)" along with a photo of Ronaldo talking to manager Ole Gunnar Sol Sher. Ronaldo, who became a world-famous football star at Manchester United, broke up with United in 2009 when he moved to Real Madrid (Spain). After that, he played Juventus (Italy) and made a comeback to Manchester United after 12 years this season.
After his transfer to Manchester United was confirmed, Ronaldo was not part of the Portugal national team schedule for the 2022 World Cup European qualifiers in Qatar. In the match against Ireland on the 2nd, he scored an equalizing goal and a comeback goal just before the end of the game, breaking the record for the most goals in a match (111 goals) held by Iranian soccer legend Ali Daei (109 goals in A match). Ronaldo joined Manchester United training immediately after being unable to play against Azerbaijan on the 7th due to the accumulation of warnings.
As Ronaldo showed outstanding performance in the national team game, the local media are predicting that Ronaldo's return to Manchester United will be played in the fourth round of the league, which will resume this weekend. Manchester United are scheduled to play Newcastle United at Old Trafford on the 11th.
Worldwide interest in Ronaldo's return to Manchester United is hot. However, there is no live TV broadcast in the UK. The Manchester United-Newcastle match, which takes place at 3 pm local time, was not broadcast on TV. In England, there is a long tradition of not broadcasting live matches of the Championship (Part 2), Bundesliga (Germany) and La Liga (Spain), as well as the Premier League, which takes place on Saturdays from 2:45pm to 5:15pm. ESPN said, "Since the 1960s, it has been a rule that has been going on for over 40 years, worrying that it will have a negative impact on the fans who watch the game and the lower league clubs (ticket sales are important)." Because of this, the time of the FA Cup final was also changed. Although it is a huge box office card, it is not easy to adjust the game time.
As the possibility of a live TV broadcast is increasing, the value of on-site tickets to see Ronaldo is skyrocketing. The Newcastle game was sold out early. British media reported that even in the ticket market, prices range from a low of 265 pounds (about 430,000 won) to a high of 2514 pounds (about 4.01 million won).
Ronaldo, who lacked time to adapt to the team during the match A, made his debut in the first round of Group F of the 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League with Young Boys (Switzerland) scheduled for the Banckdorf Stadion in Bern, Switzerland on the 15th, not against Newcastle. There is a possibility that it will.

Boxing Day
The best way to celebrate the day is to take part in festivities in a country where Boxing Day is a bank holiday or public holiday.

What's boxing day and how is it celebrated?
Individuals might also have observed that during international locations like the u. K. And canada, they get the day after christmas off. Of direction, to them it is referred to as extra than simply the day after christmas or dec. 26; it is boxing day! Boxing day is a vacation that dates lower back centuries, and but living in a rustic that does not have fun it, we nonetheless won't understand what it is all approximately. So, what's boxing day? Why is it named that, and how do humans in different nations rejoice it? There's in reality a few solutions to all of those questions. What is boxing day? Boxing day is an legit public excursion (or financial institution excursion) on dec. 26 celebrated by way of the uk and other commonwealth nations. This includes canada, australia, new zealand and south africa. On a bank holiday, the staff gets the time off. If boxing day falls on a saturday or sunday, generally the subsequent monday is recognized as a holiday with the day without work. In some eu nations - netherlands, germany and poland amongst them - dec. 26 is referred to as a 2d christmas day, also diagnosed as a felony holiday. Similarly, dec. 26 is also recognized to a few countries (like ireland and select components of spain) as saint stephen's day, a christian day of commemoration for saint stephen, who is diagnosed as being the primary christian martyr. Why is it known as boxing day? There's no person showed beginning concerning the etymology of the term boxing day. However there are several theories and capacity foundation stories which can cause the name, as well as dictate how the day has been celebrated within the beyond. Perhaps the most normally frequent explanation for the time period boxing day pertains to the word "christmas field." the concept of a christmas field dates returned to the olden days of british aristocracy, as they had been said to provide their servants dec. 26 off and deliver them some kind of gift, in any other case known as a christmas container. This box could also consist of cash and even food from the previous day's christmas dinner. Those may additionally were given to servants or to employees from their employers. A extraordinary clarification involves a specific type of christmas box, this one for charitable functions rather than presents for personnel. Containers would be open in a church for the season as much as christmas day wherein churchgoers could put monetary donations supposed for the less fortunate. Then on dec. 26, no longer so coincidentally a day the church already celebrated for the first christian martyr, participants of the clergy might then go around gifting the money in the field to the terrible. No matter which of these can be authentic, boxing day seems constructed on present-giving and charity possibly even before it first have become diagnosed as a bank holiday (1871 in england). How is boxing day celebrated? A few may also nonetheless celebrate boxing day by means of giving to the much less fortunate, but the excursion has accelerated and been commodified in a number of distinct approaches. Boxing day in many countries has end up an afternoon for doorbuster income, much like an american day with its personal potential etymologies: black friday. Boxing day has turn out to be such a income-heavy day for countries that commemorate it that a few stores now put it up for sale boxing week. With global black friday deals and monthlong vacation reductions leading up to christmas, specially on line, boxing day is simply one among many days with deals this time of 12 months. However in the u. Okay., australia and somewhere else, boxing day income are nevertheless a big deal and a way many residents spend their time without work. Boxing day may additionally resemble black friday in how people are willing to camp out for large income, but it could also resemble thanksgiving in one unique way: soccer! Just like how 3 national american football games hold the game on tv all day on thanksgiving, the u. Ok. Has soccer video games all day from the biggest leagues within the usa. On boxing day 2018, for example, there will be 9 most useful league video games being performed together with liverpool v. Newcastle and brighton v. Arsenal. On account that boxing day is the day after christmas, it's not unusual to make a meal of the leftovers. Greater than just reheating the meals, it is now not unheard of for families to make a buffet of them, or take the contents of the leftovers and flip them right into a pie. How different countries have a good time boxing day. No longer every united states of america that celebrates boxing day deviates an excessive amount of from the extra not unusual traditions. Canada, for example, would not appear to have many canada-specific factors to its boxing day. But some countries have or have had their personal traditions. The u. Okay. Has made looking something of a boxing day culture, however that has been stifled significantly because the hunting act of 2004 banned the act of the usage of puppies to seek for flora and fauna mammals. Prior to this, fox looking were a large boxing day lifestyle in the us of a. Given that that act, british hunters have changed fox searching with "path hunting," in which hunters comply with a path in preference to chasing actual animals. With an amazing majority of british citizens who prefer that lethal fox hunting live banned, it's not going there might be another alternate to this each time quickly. Where the u. Ok. Prefers to make football their choice of recreation on boxing day, australia is going in exceptional guidelines. This is essentially because of the fact that even as the u. Ok. Has all started their iciness just numerous days earlier than boxing day, australia is in its summer season. As such, the sports activities encompass cricket and, more precise to the warmer weather, yacht races. One substantially famous one is the sydney to hobart yacht race, which starts offevolved in sydney and is going to hobart in tasmania. This race has existed in australia considering that 1945. New zealand is some other us of a with warmer climate, giving citizens extra out of doors options for how to spend their day without work. Something they have in not unusual with the u. Okay. On the holiday is horse racing, along with at auckland racing membership. There are some differences to how international locations celebrate boxing day, but in the long run even the ones variations fall into large classes that they all share: sports activities, shopping and family.

The Rotary Club of Murrieta honored four heroes during the 2020 Field of Honor, which took place in November in Murrieta’s Town Square Park.
The recognition of heroes is a tradition of the annual event that features a display of U.S. flags in the park. This year’s event was modified because of the coronavirus pandemic, with some activities canceled and face masks and social distancing required at the park, according to a news release.
This year’s heroes, nominated by friends and family and selected by the Rotary Club, are community volunteer Sharon Boll and military veterans William Galbraith, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II; Kenneth J. Lepore, whose service spanning 40 years included service in the U.S. Army, the California Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve; and Richard C. Timberlake who served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force.
Each honoree received a medallion and a flag in the Field of Honor.
Sharon Boll, a resident of the Colony at California Oaks adult community in Murrieta, is involved in volunteer work at the Colony, including serving as Sunshine Committee reception chairman, arranging memorial receptions for families, and serving as holiday host, welcoming those without families to her home to share the holidays.
She is the food train leader at the Colony, coordinating meals for those too ill to cook or get out and get groceries, and during the coronavirus pandemic, she has led food distribution at the Colony, distributing food boxes provided by the county and the Salvation Army.
William Galbraith was in the 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, attached to the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, during World War II. He was in one of the last groups of paratroopers to land in France just before the Allied D-Day invasion of France in June 1944 and by September 1944 he was involved in the Operation Market Garden airborne invasion, according to the news release.
After he was seriously wounded in the Netherlands, he was sent back England. He later married his Scottish sweetheart, Anna, and they raised 10 children.

#booknotes... The Club: How the English Premier League Became the Wildest, Richest, Most Disruptive Force in Sports by Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg
1985 is the year English soccer hit its lowest point in generations...
In May, a fire broke out midmatch at Bradford’s Valley Parade stadium when a cigarette butt allegedly ignited a pile of festering trash beneath the stands, which had no extinguishers, and led to fifty-six deaths. Later that month, fights between Liverpool and fans of Italian football superpower Juventus resulted in thirty-nine fatalities and more than six hundred injuries at the European Cup final at Heysel Stadium in Belgium. And in between the two disasters, the conservative-leaning Sunday Times published a leader that appeared to speak for the British public at large -- and the upper echelons of government -- in which it branded soccer as a “slum game played by slum people in slum stadiums.”
Oh, how far English football has come. The English Premier League (EPL) -- top flight of English football -- is now the most-watched sports league in the world: “Its games now air in 185 countries -- the United Nations recognizes only 193 -- and every weekend they are broadcast to a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people,” write Robinson and Clegg. Last year, its teams brought in a record £4.8bn in revenues. And...
In the span of twenty-five years, the league’s twenty clubs have increased their combined value by 10,000 percent, from around $100 million in 1992 to $15 billion today.
The Club is the story of everything that happened from the eighties until now, how a “slum game played by slum people in slum stadiums” transformed into, as Robinson and Clegg write, the “most disruptive force in sports.”
The book is chock-full of insider stories and details, unbelievable anecdotes, and insights from all the key players involved in taking a humble game and elevating it to unimaginable global prestige.
So how did the evolution begin? It started with casual conversations between the owners/vice-chairmen of the clubs of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham. That had a vision:
They pictured a modern, marketable, and media-friendly league, with safe, attractive stadiums fit for corporate hospitality that would harness the power of television and transform their teams into billion-dollar businesses. As it happened, this vision had a name: the National Football League.
That’s right, throughout this book you learn how much the EPL took after the American NFL. There’s even a cameo by none other than O.J. Simpson. Seriously, in some ways, you can thank the Juice for elements of the modern day Premier League.
It’s no secret that England’s culture is very much influenced by its history -- which is to say that her people are a traditional bunch, often resistant to change. This English attribute is evident throughout the book, especially in the early days of the EPL. For example, when Sky, the Premier League’s first TV broadcaster, included airtime for fans to phone-in questions for pundits and guests, viewers were only interested in phoning in for one reason: They wanted to complain about one of Sky’s new ideas for televised football:
At [produce Dave] Hill’s insistence, they had created a score box and live clock that lived in the top corner of the screen throughout the game. People hated it. For some reason -- probably the British aversion to any sort of change -- viewers refused to concede that it might be useful to know the state of play in the sporting event they were watching. But Hill and [Andy] Melvin wouldn’t hear any criticism. The clock and the score had to stay.
Thank goodness. Believe it or not, that fact rates as only average, in terms of its craziness in this book. Indeed, there’s a reason Robinson and Clegg include the word Wildest in the sub-title.
#booknotes is a weekly series spotlighting somewhat random, but mostly valuable business and life insights from the most recent books that I’ve read. These are not book reports or summaries; they’re just the things I highlighted, underlined, starred and revisited.

10 To Watch : Mayor’s Edition 1620
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 6 : MAYOR’S EDITION
with Jacob Aere
The sports world and beyond remembers David Stern. Former Commissioner David Stern took the NBA into the modern era over the course of his 30 years as Commissioner after he assumed the role in 1984. By the time he left the Commissioner’s office in 2014, a league that had once struggled for a foothold had grown into a more than $5 billion-a-year industry. The NBA's longest-serving commissioner, Stern was credited with transforming the NBA into the global powerhouse it is today, overseeing major uplifts in commercial revenue and media coverage, domestic and international expansion, and a surge in global popularity. Under Stern, the NBA added seven new franchises, including two in Canada, and grew into a commercial behemoth. It also created the WNBA in 1997 and a developmental league, now known as the G League, in 2001. Thanks largely to Stern, the NBA is now revered as a sports industry pioneer and innovator. Rick had the privilege to work with Commissioner Stern on the formation of the Miami Heat and the eventual Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as interviewing him numerous times. He will be greatly missed.
Endeavor acquired majority equity ownership stake in experiential hospitality leader On Location Experiences from existing investors. Last week, Beverly-Hills based agency giant Endeavor announced that it had acquired On Location Experiences. The reported $660 million deal will give Endeavor a majority stake in the hospitality and live events company, which works with the NFL, the NCAA, and the PGA Tour, among other entities. The NFL, through its strategic investment arm, 32 Equity, will continue to be a minority shareholder and retain its seat on the Company’s Board of Directors. On Location will seek to enhance its existing sports and entertainment offerings, including its long-term relationship with the NFL, by leveraging Endeavor’s access to content and experiences across entertainment, sports and fashion. The deal will also help to strengthen Endeavor properties, including the UFC, which it acquired in 2016 for $4 billion. Former Bloomberg, Westwood One, and Time Inc. executive, Paul Caine, will lead the newly integrated entity. The deal is the latest in a flurry of acquisitions by major Hollywood talent agencies as they expand into other entertainment disciplines, particularly music and sports.
Tennis Australia announces a charity match to support bushfire relief. According to The Guardian, Australian tennis player Nick Krygios’ plans for a massive fundraising effort for bushfire victims has resulted in a tennis exhibition match set to feature some of the world’s top players. Kyrgios kicked off a flood of donations to the fundraising campaign from sporting names around Australia, including American basketballer LaMelo Ball. After Krygios’ initial push, Tennis Australia announced “Rally For Relief,” an exhibition match on Rod Laver Arena January 15. It will also grant $1 million for communities to rebuild tennis facilities. Kyrgios has also pledged $200 for each ace he serves across the Australian summer of tennis. Fellow Australian players Alex de Minaur, John Millman, and Samantha Stosur, among others, also vowed to donate money from their aces while the new ATP Cup got on board. The tournament announced that $100 would be donated to the Australian Red Cross for every ace served over the next 10 days, with the final figure expected to surpass $150,000. Much of Australia is up in flames and sports figures are here to help inspire seismic change across the globe for charitable donations.
In the wake of record low ratings for their annual New Year’s Day outdoor game, no progress is yet evident on discussions of NHL Olympic participation. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that there is "really nothing new" on possible Olympic participation at the moment, but there will be "further discussion in the near future," according to The Athletic. Daly said, "I imagine it will be discussed further with the NHLPA in connection with any resumption of talks relating to a potential CBA extension. But, we and the NHLPA will also need to get a better understanding from the IIHF and/or IOC regarding the conditions on which NHL players would be invited to the Olympics. That remains a question as to which we do not have a lot of clarity at this point." NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr said the players have "made it clear that they want to participate" in the Olympics. He said, "We want to find a way to do that." More discussions are expected before the end of the month, between the league, the NHLPA, and the IIHF.
U.S. men's national soccer team cancels Qatar training camp amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The USMNT is moving the team’s training camp out of Qatar back to the United States as a “precaution” given heightened tensions in the Middle East following the U.S. airstrike that killed Iranian General Qassem Suleimani last Thursday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the camp was scheduled to open Sunday in Doha, host city for the 2022 World Cup, but now will be staged in Bradenton, Florida. Though Doha is 950 miles from Baghdad -- the center of the current conflict -- “tensions in the region have escalated.” The Washington Post adds that U.S. outposts and personnel have “braced for retaliatory attacks.” The last thing the struggling USMNT needs at this point in time is to worry about a potentially life-threatening military conflict. USMNT officials did the right thing in moving the camp to Brandenton and out of harm’s way.
A lawsuit blaming Pop Warner for two fatalities is dismissed in federal court. According to the New York Times, a federal court judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Pop Warner, stating that the two women who sued the youth football organization had no proof that their sons’ deaths later in life were linked to any head trauma they had sustained over a decade earlier as youth football participants. The judge in the case, ruling for the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, said the mothers did not show sufficient links between any head trauma their sons may have suffered while playing Pop Warner football and their behavior later in life. The judge added that the plaintiffs had discounted other contributing factors, including the “social and biological.” The case, which was set to go to trial this month, was a benchmark for head-trauma related cases against sports organizations. Pop Warner, meanwhile, continues to refine and improve its football safety practices each year, with the constant input of renowned doctors as well as football experts, and remains the gold standard of youth football organizations nationwide.
The NBA G League secondary competition has announced the addition of Mexican professional men’s basketball team Capitanes next season, its first franchise based outside the U.S. and Canada. Established in 2016, the Mexico City outfit will become the NBA G League’s 29th team from the start of the 2020-2021 season, and will play their home games at the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera, based in Mexico’s capital. The announcement was made during a press conference ahead of Dallas Mavericks 122-111 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Mexico City on December 12, the first of two regular-season games played in the Hispanic nation during the ongoing 2019-2020 season. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said: “Bringing an NBA G League team to Mexico City is a historic milestone for the NBA which demonstrates our commitment to basketball fans in Mexico and across Latin America. As the first G League franchise based outside of the US and Canada, we look forward to welcoming Capitanes to the NBA family.” The schedule for the 2020-2021 NBA G League season, which tips off next November, will be announced in August, 2020.
Sports teams using machine learning tech to drive sponsorship revenues. According to JohnWallStreet, the sports industry has begun to place a greater emphasis on data capture and analytics, particularly as it relates to on-field performance. But while sports has become big business, Adam Grossman, founder of Block Six Analytics (B6A), suggests “from an economic and financial perspective - in terms of understanding concepts like asset valuation, cash-flow and regression - it remains behind the times.” To help bring the industry up to speed, Grossman developed a sponsorship evaluation platform that values sports assets in the same manner “that venture capitalists, private equity firms and investment banks look at investment opportunities.” B6A's proprietary sponsorship model translates traditional fit and engagement benchmarks into probabilistic revenue growth metrics. Over the last 10 months, more than a dozen pro sports organizations have begun using Block Six technology to drive sponsorship revenues. Sports sponsorships sellers naturally seek brand partners that are demographically aligned. While most teams and media entities have managed to gather insights on their own, “the challenge has always been capturing the demographic data needed to ensure audience alignment, so that both parties can achieve their goals.”
Sony and Verizon are bringing 5G to sports broadcasting. According to Mobile Marketing Magazine, Sony and Verizon collaborated to demonstrate how 5G technology and streaming can be used in live sports broadcasting during the NFL’s Texans vs. New England Patriots game on December 1. A camera person from NBC Sports used Sony’s PXW-Z450 shoulder camcorder to capture the game and the video was sent through to a production room in the NRG Stadium in Houston with the help of Sony’s prototype transmitter box, Xperia 5G mm Wave device, and finally, Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband network. The result was an almost real time broadcast sent to NBC producers without any hiccups. In the future, the same 5G-connected cameras could be used to transmit to remote production teams that aren’t located at the site of the sporting event. In the future, another advantage to 5G is the use of wireless connectivity, so cameras can use all angles and positions to capture the games.
David Stern passes away, but his legacy lives on through NBA Cares. David Stern was dedicated to public service, as is evidenced by NBA Cares, which he launched in 2005. Over its first five years, the program donated more than $100 million to charity. NBA Cares is the league’s global social responsibility program that builds on the NBA’s mission of addressing important social issues in the U.S. and around the world. Causes the platform supports include education, youth, and family development, and health, including Special Olympics, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, UNICEF, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Share Our Strength and GLSEN. NBA Cares programs and participants have provided more than five million hours of hands-on service, created more than 1,300 places where kids and families can live, learn or play, and engaged more than 51 million youth basketball programs in communities around the world. Internationally, NBA Cares has created more than 323 places where kids and families can live, learn, or play in 40 countries – largely thanks to Stern and his legacy.

Are invisible football fans driving out the traditional local supporters?
It is argued that today in football that local fans and the traditional footballing communities are being neglected with a shift in focus to the more affluent invisible football fans due to the globalisation of the game. Globalisation is academically defined by Ake (see Shmulik, 2009) as a ‘stretch of processes, practices and structures across space, especially the national space to globality. It is the transnationalization of things.’ This definition essentially states how globalisation is when something starts to develop a larger international influence, in regards to the Premier League this could be evidenced through the new invisible globalised fan base. When we go back to the industrial revolution and we see that factory workers were only made to work a half day on a Saturday enabling these local working-class men to be in the pub by midday ready for their 3 pm kick-off (Nauright and Ramfjord, 2010). I believe in order to find out how football and its humble localised tradition has now become the multibillion-pound industry we must look back to 1992. The year the English game was reinvented with the introduction of the Premier League, a break away from the traditional Football League, a league composed of the countries 20 most elite football clubs. With the introduction of the Premier League, also we saw the introduction of astronomical TV deals, Rupert Murdoch, the owner of broadcasting group BSkyB, come in with a bid of £304m for a five-year television rights deal (The Guardian, 2012), this would go on to shape the globalised Premier League that we now know today, whom last year agreed a fee with Sky and BT to sell the TV rights for £1.7bn per year for three years! When broken down this means Sky are currently paying roughly £11m on average for each of the live matches it airs (BBC, 2015). I would argue that this globalisation and augmented financial investment, has come at the price of the local working-class supporters. As times have transformed so has the audience in Premier League football stadiums and now it is argued by Nauright and Ramfjord (2010) that ‘The more affluent the crowd, the more revenue a club can generate’. This further commodification of seats and commercial boxes in football stadiums has and is making it increasingly difficult for local fans to see their club live week in week out. When we look into the pricing of tickets, Arsenal infamously springs to mind, with last season their highest priced season tickets costing a staggering £2013 and match day ticket of £97 (BBC, 2016). This makes it clear to see how the football clubs have forced the local fans to lose their local and national identity. Again, looking at academic research this is supported by Coombs and Osborne (2012) whom in 2009 conducted a case study on Aston Villa Football Club, they wrote how with the increased economic concerns brought by globalization has resulted in the fans’ loss of local identities and that sport no longer acts a culturally executed and experienced ritual for its fans. For some, however, the globalization of football has provided many benefits such as the ‘1.6 billion contributed by English professional football to Government in taxes in 2015/16’ (Deloitte, 2017) therefore this leads me onto the questions I pose to you, Is this Globalisation good for the English game? Will the football clubs in England continue to cater for this globalised fan base and continue to neglect the localised fans or is it possible that the shift in focus could go be returned to that of the pre-Premier League era?

Day 15 (6/2)
I’m running out of introductory sentences for these entries, but my oh my what a great day!!! It started early, at 7:30 when I woke up naturally and decided to stay awake. At 8:30, Ndoli, our cab driver, arrived at the apartment to pick us up. Today is car-free Sunday in Kigali, so we needed to leave the apartment early to ensure that we would have enough time to find a route around the closed roads to get to the Marriott Hotel. Car-free day happens once a month, and shuts down the major streets in Kigali for a few hours in the morning, during which there are organized gatherings to run, play soccer, walk, do anything active. It’s an initiative started by the current government, and it’s meant to bring awareness not to air pollution, but to exercise and health!! The idea is that during those hours people will all run, and if there are any illnesses that they didn’t know they had, the symptoms will show themselves after running for a few hours. Anyways we were going to the Marriott Hotel because the founder of possibly Kigali’s most well-known tour company went to Yale, and he offered us a 50% discount on a day-long tour!! At the Marriott we met our tour guide, Eric, and the other 5 people in our tour in a gift shop with incredibly beautiful but incredibly expensive goods handmade by women around Rwanda. Our tour group consisted of us three, an older man from Germany and his friend from Singapore, a Harvard grad student named Stella working on a degree in international development, a Stanford medical resident named Andrea (both of them also working in Kigali), and an older woman named Jan from England. At 9:30 we all boarded onto the bus and we were off! Our very first stop was a wall featuring murals from artists commissioned by the government to depict Rwanda post-genocide. Eric walked us through what each mural meant, from “Thinking outside the box” to gender equality. As we were walking slowly along the wall, which was the wall of a primary school playground, the children of the primary school would come running up to us in small groups, waving, high fiving, giggling, they were so damn cute it hurt. At the end of wall at the top of the hill our tour bus met us and we got back in to go to our next destination – A MARKET!!!!!! This market made me ABSOLUTELY elated. Not only did it remind me of the medinah where I lived in Morocco, but everyone’s smiles when I said “Murakoze!!” (Thank you!!) warmed my heart. And the walk through the market ended with Eric purchasing, washing, cutting up, and serving us locally grown bananas, passion fruit, tree tomatoes, and mandarin oranges, which we ate huddled together in the middle of the market, with more adorable children surrounding us again. Also inside the market we got to smell and guess the contents of different containers holding spices, help a woman empty out her pea pods, and taste sorghum used for making beer. Our next destination was a milk bar, something that’s very popular in Rwanda. We grouped around a small table and were each served a glass of first fresh naturally sweet whole milk, and then a glass of fermented milk which was somewhere between buttermilk and greek yogurt. Both types of milk were distinct from each other, and the smell of the sweet whole milk made me realize that all of Kigali smells like milk. After the milk bar, which was in the Muslim neighborhood of Kigali, we went to a mosque where I was PUMPED to hear the PRAYER CALL!!!!! It sounded ENTIRELY different from the one that I heard 5 times a day in Morocco, it was much more sing-songy, and of course the accent was different, but it made me so happy. We didn’t go inside the mosque, only stood outside between the mosque and a soccer field where what looked like a high school game was going on. Then we got back in the bus and went to Mount Kigali!!!!! We drove to the top of it (somehow) and only walked a couple hundred meters from where we parked to a beautiful clearing that offered a near-perfect view of hilly Rwanda. Unfortunately it was very cloudy today, which is why I say near-perfect. But Eric told us that on clear days you can see volcanoes from the top of Mount Kigali. We took plenty of pictures, with the younger people in the group (us three) standing on the rock at the very edge for pictures, and then started back towards the bus. On our way back we saw a group of young adults in the woods dressed in traditional Rwandan attire, dancing to music for what I think was some type of video project. They told us that the theme of the project was “Peace” and dressed Zodi, Ananya, Stella, Andrea, and me up in their outfits. Eric was happy to indulge and let us experience such a rare opportunity, but eventually we needed to get back to the bus because we had a lunch reservation, and the dancers were upset that we couldn’t stay. Of course I don’t speak Kinyarwanda, but I think that they wanted us to be a part of their project, and said that Eric didn’t believe in peace if he didn’t let us be a part of their project. Anyways we did have to go, so we got back in the bus and went to a restaurant that I’ve forgotten the name of, and said goodbye to the two tourists from Germany and Singapore who were only doing the half-day tour. The rest of us went to the restaurant, and I had my first traditional Rwandan meal!!!!!!!!!!!! The main thing I was SO excited for is called Ubugali, and I’ve been wanting to try it since we arrived. It’s cassava flour and sorghum flour mashed together and formed into a very malleable texture that you use as a spoon sort of for the vegetables, meats, stews, etc, on the table. The dishes that we used the ubugali for included stewed bananas and peas, tilapia, beans, potatoes, and a ground-up leafy vegetable whose name I forget. Also a very spicy chili sauce called “chili secret”. After lunch we went to Question Coffee which made Ananya, Zodi, and me very happy, and made us feel super cool being recognized by the employees like the true locals that we are. We all got coffee and were able to sit down for a while which was nice after eating such a filling meal on a hot day. I got, of course, cold brew. While everyone was ordering, Eric and I talked about coffee in Rwanda, and he recommended some other cafés that Ananya and I have yet to try out. Then, once we were all sitting, Eric filled us all in on the history of the social enterprise funded by Michael Bloomberg that became Question Coffee. Once we were finished with our drinks, we got back in our trusty bus and went to Nyabarango river, a small river that flows into the Nile. At this river there are boats for people who are denied access onto public buses because they have too much luggage, so they cross the river in a small boat. We all boarded on one of these boats for a blissful two minutes before we were already at the other side. Once on the other side we started a steep ascent up a hill, and oH MY GOD SO MANY LITTLE TINY CHILDREN RAN UP AND HUGGED MY LEGS AND I HAD TO STOP AND HUG EVERY SINGLE ONE AND I THINK I’M OVULATING OR SOMETHING BECAUSE WOW THESE KIDS WERE SOMETHING ELSE. The hugs made my ascent a little bit slower, but we did finally get to the top and finally walked on level ground to get back in our bus. On the way to the bus MORE kids (equally adorable but older) followed us and waved and giggled, even chasing our bus once we were inside. It was a quick bus ride after that to our last stop, the Rwanda Genocide Memorial. Here, Eric left us to have an hour in the memorial before meeting our bus driver to go home, because he had to go to a meeting back at the Marriott. The memorial was of course intense. I don’t know if I’m willing to or capable of explaining it in this blog, but I will say that anyone who wants to spend any time in Rwanda should be required to visit RGM. There’s only one way to go through the memorial, so we were all kind of together, but going at our own paces. After a very quiet hour of reading and watching, we reconvened in the parking lot and led the bus driver to our various stops. We all exchanged numbers and created a WhatsApp group to exchange pictures, and Andrea said that she wanted to meet us for a wine night at Judith’s place, Flute! Once at the apartment we gave Anita our laundry, Ananya and Zodi went to the convention center, and I took a moto taxi to Java House, where I am now. When I got here I was warmly greeted by the waiters and the manager, and I sat down at a table outside to read for about an hour, until Benny (one of the waiters) told me that a booth cleared up inside. The manager even offered me a drink on the house tonight!!! So I’m currently drinking a large green tea with honey, just read for about two hours, and I’ll read again after posting this blog and photos.

William Barr, Huawei, Caster Semenya: Your Thursday Briefing
U.S. Attorney General Grilled by Senate Panel
Attorney General William Barr spent much of Wednesday answering questions from members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the special counsel’s report on Russian election meddling and possible obstruction of justice.
Mr. Barr defended the four-page summary that he released of the report, which the special counsel, Robert Mueller, criticized in a letter released by the Justice Department as failing to capture the “context, nature and substance” of the 448-page document.
Partisan focus: Democrats pressed Mr. Barr on why he had not publicly acknowledged concerns about his original summary and why he asserted that Mr. Trump had cooperated fully with the investigation when he tried to thwart it.
Republicans focused not on Mr. Trump or Mr. Mueller’s report but on Hillary Clinton’s emails and the former F.B.I. officials who opened the Russia investigation.
Go deeper: Read our reporter’s takeaways from the hearing.
What’s next: The House Judiciary Committee voted to allow staff lawyers to question Mr. Barr on Thursday. Mr. Barr has said he will not appear under that format.
See for yourself: Watch clips from the hearing.
Huawei grapples with an identity crisis
The Trump administration’s accusations that the telecommunications giant acts as a spy for the Chinese government, means that Huawei must prove it is trustworthy to maintain lucrative global business ties.
But “its soul is steeped in Communist Party culture,” writes our New New World columnist Li Yuan, and the company’s internal structures resemble the party, from the power of its top leadership down to its team-building activities.
Related: Britain’s prime minister, Theresa May, fired her defense secretary, accusing him of leaking sensitive information about the government’s internal deliberations about Huawei and its decision to let the company build out its 5G network.
Trade talks: As the U.S. and China work toward closing a trade deal, there’s one thing that Beijing is unlikely to yield on: control over the data that American companies collect on their consumers inside China.
Women with high testosterone can be barred from races
A nuanced ruling by the highest court in international sports will force female athletes with elevated levels of male hormones to take suppressants to compete in certain international track races.
The ruling is a defeat for Caster Semenya, a two-time Olympic champion in track and field from South Africa, who had previously challenged a proposal to limit testosterone levels. The ruling by the arbitration court was also watched closely by transgender athletes.
The court said restrictions on permitted levels of naturally occurring testosterone were discriminatory, but that such discrimination was a “necessary, reasonable and proportionate means” to preserve the integrity of women’s competition.
Response: Ms. Semenya issued a statement through her lawyers, said the decision “will not hold me back. I will once again rise above and continue to inspire young women and athletes in South Africa and around the world.” Her lawyers are considering an appeal.
What’s next: If she wants to keep participating at major international competitions, she faces some hard choices: take hormone-suppressing drugs; compete against men; or enter competitions for intersex athletes, if any are offered.
Focus on food and climate
What we eat every day has consequences.
The world’s food system is responsible for about one-quarter of the planet-warming greenhouse gases that humans generate each year. That includes raising and harvesting all the plants, animals and animal products we eat. Climate change is also now altering the foods America grows.

In pursuit of Aboriginal justice
Patrick Cumaiyi waved to his family with shackled hands as he boarded a plane to Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, to face a domestic-violence complaint. Before takeoff, an argument broke out, an officer delivered a sharp blow to Mr. Cumaiyi’s head, and another officer dragged him headfirst onto the tarmac.
Medical records obtained by The New York Times suggest he was a victim not only of police brutality — a persistent problem for Indigenous Australians — but also a cover-up.
Here’s what else is happening
U.N.C.: A 22-year-old man was in custody following a deadly shooting at the University of North Carolina that left two dead and four wounded.
Venezuela: Thousands of the opposition Juan Guaidó’s supporters turned out for a second day of protests in the capital, Caracas, and elsewhere, but it was unclear whether the antigovernment demonstrations were a convincing rejoinder to the setback he suffered on Tuesday, when military commanders asserted their allegiance to President Nicolás Maduro.
Julian Assange: A British court sentenced the WikiLeaks founder to 50 weeks in jail for jumping bail when he took refuge in Ecuador’s embassy in London seven years ago.
Taliban: Negotiators began a new round of peace talks with the U.S. in Doha, Qatar. The U.S. military command in Afghanistan has stopped counting how much of the country is controlled by the Taliban, eliminating what had been a public measure of progress in the war.
Australia: Kate Jenkins, who is leading the country’s inquiry into workplace sexual harassment, is trying to overcome nondisclosure agreements that prevent victims from speaking out.

Yeti sighting? The Indian Army posted photos of 32-inch footprints near a base camp in Nepal, saying they belonged to the mythical snowman. Social media users had their own theories.
Netflix: The video streaming giant and SK Global Entertainment, the production house that made the film “Crazy Rich Asians,” acquired the rights to the story of the 12 boys and their soccer coach who were trapped in a cave in Thailand in July.
Do-it-yourself treadmills: Internet users are posting videos of themselves exercising using nothing more than soap, water, a slick hard floor and maybe a lack of common sense.

Smarter Living:Allergies can be torture. Immunotherapy — shots that can help desensitize you to allergens — can help over time. If needles aren’t your thing, cleaning the filter of your air conditioner or furnace can keep indoor air cleaner. Vacuum often. Mattress protectors for both your mattress and box spring keep dust mites out. Pillow protectors are also an option.
And we asked you for the best advice anyone’s ever given you, and how it made an impact on your life. Here’s what you said.
And now for the Back Story on …
The power of fairy tales
A recent feature by our Berlin bureau chief tracked how Germany’s far-right has adopted anti-immigrant tropes in discussing an influx from Poland of “the most notorious fairy-tale baddie”: the wolf.
Connecting nationalism and fairy tales is not new.
The Brothers Grimm, who based their tales on folk tradition, lived and worked in the 19th century, when Europe was brimming with enthusiasm for the nation-state over multi-ethnic empires. Artists and writers reached for ancient myths to feed the ideal of a national culture.
That legacy lives on in children’s books but also concert halls: Jean Sibelius picked tales from the Finnish national epic “Kalevala”, and Bela Bartok collected folk songs from the former Austro-Hungarian empire.
But populists picking up the tales and myths often seems far from the artists’ intentions.
“Even if musical folklore once owed a debt to nationalism, today, ultranationalism hurts it so much that the damage is far greater than the benefit once was,” Bartok wrote in an essay in 1937.
Earlier this week, we told you about South Korean grandmothers who are learning to read and write for the first time. Their poignant stories reminded our Seoul bureau chief of the older villagers he knew when he was growing up.
That’s it for this briefing. See you next time.

Ronaldo, who grew up to be a world-famous football star at Manchester United, broke up with United in 2009 when he moved to Real Madrid (Spain).
Ronaldo joined Manchester United training immediately after being unable to play against Azerbaijan on the 7th due to accumulated warnings.
As Ronaldo showed excellent performance in the national team match, there are many media that predict that Ronaldo's return to Manchester United will be played in the fourth round of the league, which will be resumed this weekend. Manchester United are scheduled to play against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on the 11th.
ESPN explained, “Since the 1960s, it has been a rule that has been in place for over 40 years, worrying that it will negatively affect the fans who watch the game and the lower league clubs (where ticket sales are important).” Because of this, the time of the FA Cup final was also changed. Although it is a huge box office card, it is not easy to adjust the game time.
As the possibility of a live TV broadcast is increasing, the price of on-site tickets to see Ronaldo is skyrocketing. The Newcastle game was sold out early. British media reported that the lowest price in the ticket market is 265 pounds (about 430,000 won), and the most expensive ones sell for 2514 pounds (about 4.01 million won).
Ronaldo, who lacked time to adapt to the team during the match A, returned to the first leg of the 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League Group F Group F against Young Boys (Switzerland) scheduled for the 15th at the Banckdorf Stadion in Bern, Switzerland, not against Newcastle. There is also the possibility of hitting .
