Planners on bikes getting coffee

Over the weekend, Jason Thorne, who is the General Manager of Planning and Economic Development at the City of Hamilton, tweeted this out. He said, if Jerry Seinfeld can do Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, then he was going to do Planners On Bikes Getting Coffee. And that’s exactly what he did in Barrie with their Chief Planner, Andrea Bourrie.

I immediately responded by asking: Is this really a thing you are doing? Because if not, it is something you should absolutely start. He was kidding but I think the response he received on Twitter got him reconsidering if he should make it a thing. I think this is a great idea, and so I hope he does consider it. If you agree, maybe send him a tweet.

I have a GoPro, gimbal stabilizer, and a bicycle. So if this doesn’t become a thing, maybe there needs to be a Developers On Bikes Getting Coffee.

The boom lasted from 1910 to 1914. More than 300 ranches with 4,587 foxes were operating when the First World War broke out.

The pedigrees of the best silver foxes were as well-documented as those of race horses. Eventually, 52 fox ranches surrounded Charlottetown. Summerside, the centre of the industry, had 63 ranches. The provincial government estimated in 1913 that the island’s foxes were worth twice as much as “all of the cattle, horses, sheep, swine and poultry as shown by the Canadian Census of 1911.”

But the war almost killed the business. By the spring of 1915, the industry was worth one-eighth its pre-war value. American auction houses tried to take up the slack, but silver foxes never caught on in New York the way they did in Vienna and St. Petersburg, partly because the best furriers were in Europe, on the German and Austrian side of the trench lines.

After the war, the bubble began to swell again. This time, the value of the pelts wasn’t the driving force, at least not directly. It was obvious that the fox fur industry had a future, and fur farmers in the United States, Eastern Europe and Russia wanted breeding stock.

Between 1932 and 1937, the number of fox farms doubled to 1,215.

This was the peak. One in every 10 Islanders kept foxes. In 1939, 76,000 pelts were sold into a glutted market. Fox fur was not only plentiful. It was out of style.

The Prince Edward Island fox industry was finished by the 1950s, although there was a brief revival in the mid-1970s. It was a victim of its own success: The progeny of the breeding animals shipped out in the first half of the 20th century were used to start fox farms in the very countries where the furs were most prized. Customers, inspired by animal rights activists, turned against the fur industry.
