Modern Times Chaos Grid LoL edition Imperial Stout (Picked up at the brewery in Point Loma). A 4 of 4. Aged in bourbon-barrels, with cocoa, vanilla, almonds, and peanuts added, I'd say the bourbon barrel, peanut, and vanilla are most dominant. Obviously there's a ton to the base beer, too -- lots of chocolate and roasty notes and a slightly oily body that seems to pick up and carry all the additions quite well. The peanut notes have a nice roast quality to them, which works well with the rest of the beer.

Tried out the Kirkland brand Vintage Ale. It is a bourbon barrel imperial stout by Deschutes Brewing. This is aged 9 months in the barrel and you can really pick up the vanilla, chocolate, and dark fruit. The bourbon is pretty prominent on the nose. I really liked it, but I think it could have used an additional 3 months in the barrel. This seems to me luke it will really age well and at $10 for a 22 oz bomber it is a great deal. Well worth picking up from Costco.

Whistle Buoy Brewing Co: Desolate Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout
Whistle Buoy Brewing Co: Desolate Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout
Whistle Buoy Brewing in Victoria’s Market Square released Desolate in mid-November, a bourbon barrel-aged Imperial Stout. According to the label and website, it is the “first-ever release of our barrel program and is extremely limited”. My bottle was number 177 of 800. It’s encouraging to see that even such a small-scale brewery as Whistle Buoy can still find the money, time, and motivation to…

415 breweries in the state of Colorado. This one is a mere 20 miles away.
Yes, you’ve read that correctly…14.7% bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. Breckenridge Bourbon barrels for 12 months mind you.
This stuff is absolutely phenomenal, and at $25 a 4 pack (of 12oz cans) it better be.

Modern Times Radiant Glow (right) and Suggestion of Mass: Hyper Coconut Finishing Move (left) on tap at the League's farewell party on 11/2/2024. A 3 and 4, respectively. The first is a perfectly fine lighter hazy pale ale with the citrus and tropical hop profile you'd expect. The Imperial Stout is aged in bourbon barrels with coconut, and well, that's what it tastes like. Big, rich, and all the chocolate and dark roast notes you'd expect with touches of vanilla, bourbon, and coconut on top. Excellent.

What kind of drinks do you guys think Darla would like?
Sometimes I see her as the sugary, fruity cocktail kinda gal. But I also could see her being the Manhattan type. Maybe it depends on the quality of the alcohol and the vibe of the night.
As far as wines go, I think she'd like both white and reds - as long as they're decent quality. Black fruit flavours in reds, maybe stone fruit for whites (?). Idk, she's a hard girl to pin down but for some reason I do think she'd prefer more fruit forward wines.

Took advantage of the Black Friday special untapping of eight(!) barrel aged stouts at Uhl's Brewing. They were incredible. The mix included dessert versions and just highlight the barrel ones. The food truck Vinny and Marie's had great sausage sandwiches. Overall a highlight of a shopping day

Meanwhile, have another beer.
This time out on the patio. Yes, it is that time of year. Yes, it has some odd spices not typically found in ale. Yes, it only happens this time of year. Yes, it is 1000x better than those Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Yes, I usually buy this for The Wife™️. Yes, this is a local to me brewery (2.3 miles away). Yes I could probably walk there. No, I probably don’t want to. Although, they do have a different food truck every day.
