So I got a copy of Awakening from my then-friend-current-girlfriend as a gift in late 2015 and I don’t quite remember why I was a bit upset about it, but I was and completely ignored the game until some time around.... April-ish of 2016.

I had just started school at Texas State and so I was a little stressed out and needed something to do and playing my pokémon games wasn’t quite working out and... well, a few people I was following here on tumblr at the time were posting more FE content and there was this girl who sat in front of me in an art history lecture that would play her 3DS before class would start and she had a copy of Awakening, so.... at about that point, curiosity got the better of me and I started a file not knowing what I was about to get into.

It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be, I remember going through and snapchatting a lot of the nonsense that went on through the game (with a lot of ‘what the fuck are you playing???’ responses from my friends kajhfkjdahfh) and that was nice, and... then I think I took a break for a while and got back into it in late May.

Now May of 2016 is about the time when Things Started to go Kind of Wrong for Strange and Not Immediately Apparent Reasons. My dad was experiencing some troubles that we all amounted to job-related stress bc his boss was a Major Dick and his commute out to his workplace was long and there’s lots of traffic, etc, etc. So we have more stress and more of me turning to the humorous strategy game I was just getting into.

At about this point I’m aware that I could marry characters off to each other and getting everyone’s supports was fun and very amusing and I’d already paired a few characters off to each other, but... I was already veeeery amused by the recruitment interaction and Chrom just making a fool of himself yet again while trying to Make New Friends, and I decided I didn’t want to lose this new unit and so paired him up with Robin for the rest of that chapter and got the first support pretty quickly.It’s cute, ok, it was cute, and he’s drawing stuff, and already that’s more points in my book because I like it when you get an artistically inclined character who isn’t made fun of for it,,Plus let’s just face it, Libra is rather handsomeAnd me at the time is like “hmm. Handsome, quiet voice, soothing personality, obviously troubled and with some issues to face later, room for possible development, probably nice and protective, would likely be very nice to my Robin, alrighty.”(Really, all sorts of things that me at the time was probably desperately wanting anyway considering that things in my personal life weren’t going so great)So I figured I would keep an eye on new characters I was acquiring and letting them interact with Robin, but really Libra just became the go-to pair up for her in each new chapter of the story and so I got all their supports pretty quickly.AND THEY’RE CUTE and really amusing, like Robin, you went and asked the man to draw himself so you could stare at that,, Libra, you really decided in the S support to be that forward about having fallen for her,,I went with it, saved, moved on with the game, cried bc this was cute, all of that stuffAND THEN THERE WAS MORGAN

I think I was vaguely aware of the fact that were were gonna be second gen units, but also I was completely surprised by it(I remember calling girlfriend later and updating her about my game progress and being like “I HAVE A SON????” and she was like “yeah, dumbass, you have a son, you get kids in this game”)So that was just a fun thing to find out and was horribly sweet and then getting all of the supports with Morgan was really fun and then I started...

and I started making friends and interacting with new people

and really that has been such a wonderful experience and I’m so very happy that I got into this game and honestly? Not sure my interest would have been held if I hadn’t decided to marry my Robin off to Libra, bc he is just such a comforting character

Day 7 of a month of spooky prompts courtesy of the RPCDev Discord! This one got a little away from me, and I entirely blame @knowseverythingaboutyou. 

Oct 7: Midnight in a busy city, sirens blaring a few blocks away. 

Her supervisor called her into the nearest HQ–four hours away if traffic was kind, in Santa Fe–to do a full debrief regarding the yahoos and the footage Oz sent to SHIELD. There were concerns over whether or not the Osprey was as secure as they wanted it to be if her yahoos were any indication. And now that the hooded figures seemed to have claimed said yahoos for their own mysterious purposes, the investigation hit a dead end so to speak. SHIELD was…reluctant to send in an agent to investigate given the surreal nature of the town, based on various reports and Darcy’s own experience growing up there.

The debrief was long, drawn out, and entirely too repetitive for Darcy’s liking. She didn’t know how many times she had to avert her eyes from Oz’s footage depicting the distorted outline of a Hooded Figure approaching her while her supervisor, LT Koenig, demanded to know why she didn’t use her ICER on it. “These hooded freakshows make it so every site is compromised!” 

Darcy’s insistence that the Hooded Figures are generally alright save for the one or two bad apples in Night Vale who steal babies--and shouldn’t the fact that they saved Darcy from vague yahoo kidnapping be proof of that--fell on deaf ears while the wail of a police siren sped by outside, casting eerie red and blue lights against the tinted windows of the small conference room and the smooth clockface ticking away on the wall nearest the door. 

“The deputy department head is not happy, Lewis,” LT ground out, “As such he’s riding my ass, so I’m riding yours until this is resolved.” Deputy Director of the STAKE division, Gerardo Otxoa, was a well-known hardass, so Darcy got the feeling that LT was putting it mildly. So much for a cushy assignment for Koenig. 

The wailing disappeared down the block until they were left with the faint buzz of fluorescent lighting as the soundtrack to LT’s unimpressed gaze. 

Darcy breathed deeply. This was always the difficulty when working with outsiders who didn’t understand the uniqueness of Night Vale’s residents. Particularly those who may or may not exist in any quantifiable way.

“I can make a formal request to the City Council back home on behalf of SHIELD and STAKE, but that’s not going to go anywhere as the Hooded Figures are liminal beings who may or may not exist within this plane of reality. If pressed, you might ask Dr. Strange to see if he has a method of warding the Copper Osprey against them, or if he has further insight as to who they are or where they’re from. Personally, I refuse as a matter of self-preservation, given that this encounter had the best possible outcome and I do not want to get on the Hooded Figures’ bad side. What I will say for the record, is that it is entirely ill-advised to look at the Hooded Figures’ and that was the mistake the Tweedles made and why they were….disincorporated or whatever happened to them. You don’t look at them, you don’t talk about them, they do not exist, I don’t know what else I can say to make you and Silver Fox Boss understand. It’s so beyond dangerous to acknowledge them at all.”

Darcy’s hands felt icy as she dragged them over her face. The sun had long since set, and she just wanted to call it a day as the long drive left her feeling tired and grumpy, herself. The familiar blanket of fear that overcame her whenever the Hooded Figures came up had long since receded into an anxious anticipation to head back to her hotel for the night so she could get some rest before driving back home to the Osprey.  

“Either way, Strange and I are not compadres, as I find the Sorcerer Supreme entirely too pompous for my delicate sensibilities, and he’s effectively banned me from the Sanctum Sanctorum as the Cloak of Levitation likes me better. Tell the Silver Fox to just ask out Hill already, maybe he’d be less grumpy if he wasn’t pining after her all the time.” The Caretaker stood in one smooth motion, and met LT’s look with a steady gaze of her own. “Next time let’s just video call, okay? I’ve got your number saved in my bunker. Hasta la pasta, Koenig, it’s been real.” 

With a cheeky salute, Darcy turned and left before LT had the opportunity to say anything in return.

Kelly also went to college and Dilara works for her parents' company, so I don't really understand why some people drag Kelly down, it's a comparable situation in many ways: both have studied and had the help of their parents:// one thing is working in a family business. Another is getting a job because of your dad’s influence. Parents can name their kids on the family business because it’s a family thing obviously, parents runs the business.

But using your dad’s connection in other business to get a job is not okay. It’s called nepotism. Because your dad is not your boss and that job isn’t not of your family.

For example. If my parents have a restaurant and all my family works there it’s natural that I will work there if I want to. But what if I get a job just because my dad is friend with the restaurants owner, so I skipped the recruiting and interview, that’s traffic of influences in Business is anti ethic.

So it’s not double standards. Also my mom for example works for real states but it’s not her company it will be nepotism if she hires me. Not the same if the firm was own business.

Should data be crunched at the centre or at the edge?

ONCE A YEAR the computing cloud touches down in Las Vegas. In early December tens of thousands of mostly male geeks descend on America’s gambling capital in hope not of winnings but of wisdom about Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s biggest cloud-computing provider. Last year they had the choice of more than 2,500 different sessions over a week at the shindig, which was called “Re:Invent”. The high point was the keynote featuring AWS’s latest offerings by Andy Jassy, the firm’s indefatigable boss, who paced the stage for nearly three hours.

But those who dare to walk the long city blocks of Las Vegas to the conference venues can connect to the cloud, and thus the mirror worlds, in another way. Push a button to request a green light at one of thousands of intersections and this will trigger software from SWIM.AI, a startup, to perform a series of calculations that may influence the traffic flow in the entire city. These intersections do not exist just in the physical realm, but live in the form of digital twins in a data centre. Each takes in information from its environment—not just button-pushing pedestrians, but every car crossing a loop in the road and every light change—and continually predicts what its traffic lights will do two minutes ahead of time. Ride-hailing firms such as Uber, among others, can then feed these predictions into their systems to optimise driving routes.

AWS represents a centralised model where all the data are collected and crunched in a few places, namely big data centres. SWIM.AI, on the other hand, is an example of what is being called “edge computing”: the data are processed in real time as close as possible to where they are collected. It is between these two poles that the infrastructure of the data economy will stretch. It will be, to quote a metaphor first used by Brian Arthur of the Santa Fe Institute, very much like the root system of an aspen tree. For every tree above the ground, there are miles and miles of interconnected roots underground, which also connect to the roots of other trees. Similarly, for every warehouse-sized data centre, there will be an endless network of cables and connections, collecting data from every nook and cranny of the world.

To grasp how all this may work, consider the origin and journey of a typical bit and how both will change in the years to come. Today the bit is often still created by a human clicking on a website or tapping on a smartphone. Tomorrow it will more often than not be generated by machines, collectively called the “Internet of Things” (IOT): cranes, cars, washing machines, eyeglasses and so on. And these devices will not only serve as sensors, but act on the world in which they are embedded.

Ericsson, a maker of network gear, predicts that the number of IOT devices will reach 25bn by 2025, up from 11bn in 2019. Such an estimate may sound self-serving, but this explosion is the likely outcome of a big shift in how data is collected. Currently, many devices are tethered by cable. Increasingly, they will be connected wirelessly. 5G, the next generation of mobile technology, is designed to support 1m connections per square kilometre, meaning that in Manhattan alone there could be 60m connections. Ericsson estimates that mobile networks will carry 160 exabytes of data globally each month by 2025, four times the current amount.

The destination of your average bit is changing, too. Historically, most digital information stayed home, on the device where it was created. Now, more and more data flow into the big computing factories operated by AWS, but also its main competitors, Microsoft Azure, Alibaba Cloud and Google Cloud. These are, in most cases, the only places so far with enough computing power to train algorithms that can, for instance, quickly detect credit-card fraud or predict when a machine needs a check-up, says Bill Vass, who runs AWS’s storage business—the world’s biggest. He declines to say how big, only that it is 14 times bigger than that of AWS’s closest competitor, which would be Azure (see chart).

What Mr Vass also prefers not to say, is that AWS and other big cloud-computing providers are striving mightily to deepen this centralisation. AWS provides customers with free or cheap software that makes it easy to connect and manage IOT devices. It offers no fewer than 14 ways to get data into its cloud, including several services to do this via the internet, but also offline methods, such as lorries packed with digital storage which can hold up to 100 petabytes to ferry around data (one of which Mr Jassy welcomed on stage during his keynote speech in 2016).

The reason for this approach is no secret. Data attract more data, because different sets are most profitably mined together—a phenomenon known as “data gravity”. And once a firm’s important data are in the cloud, it will move more of its business applications to the computing skies, generating ever more revenue for cloud-computing providers. Cloud providers also offer an increasingly rich palette of services which allow customers to mine their data for insights.

Yet such centralisation comes with costs. One is the steep fees firms have to pay when they want to move data to other clouds. More important, concentrating data in big centres could also become more costly for the environment. Sending data to a central location consumes energy. And once there, the temptation is great to keep crunching them. According to OpenAI, a startup-cum-think-tank, the computing power used in cutting-edge AI projects started to explode in 2012. Before that it closely tracked Moore’s law, which holds that the processing power of chips doubles roughly every two years; since then, demand has doubled every 3.4 months.

Happily, a counter-movement has already started—toward the computing “edge”, where data are generated. It is not just servers in big data centres that are getting more powerful, but also smaller local centres and connected devices themselves, thus allowing data to be analysed closer to the source. What is more, software now exists to move computing power around to where it works best, which can be on or near IOT devices.

Applications such as self-driving cars need very fast-reacting connections and cannot afford the risk of being disconnected, so computing needs to happen in nearby data centres or even in the car itself. And in some cases the data flows are simply too large to be sent to the cloud, as with the traffic lights in Las Vegas, which together generate 60 terabytes a day (a tenth of the amount Facebook collects in a day).

One day soon, debates may rage over whether data generation should be taxed

How far will the pendulum swing back? The answer depends on whom you ask. The edge is important, concedes Matt Wood, who is in charge of AI at AWS, but “at some point you need to aggregate your data together so that you can train your models”. Sam George, who leads Azure’s IOT business, expects computing to be equally spread between the cloud and its edge. And Simon Crosby, the chief technologist at SWIM.AI, while admitting that his firm’s approach “does not apply everywhere”, argues that too much data are generated at the edge to send to the cloud, and there will never be enough data scientists to help train all the models centrally.

Even so, this counter-movement may not go far enough. Given the incentives, big cloud providers will still be tempted to collect too much data and crunch them. One day soon, debates may rage over whether data generation should be taxed, if the world does not want to drown in the digital sea.■

“We’re not going to be second-class citizens in the South.” That’s what the 2,000 workers at the sprawling new International Harvester factory — which once stood where planes now take off from Standiford Field — declared in 1947. They objected to the lower pay scale that Harvester management had imposed, and to underscore their point, they walked out of the plant. They then kept it shut down tight in a raucous strike that dominated Louisville’s headlines for over 40 days.

What made this action run contrary to much conventional wisdom is that Harvester’s wages were generous by Southern standards. And nearly all of those who walked out had never been in a union before. And during the strike, whites and African-Americans demonstrated a level of solidarity unprecedented in then heavily-segregated Louisville. And one more thing made the “Southern differential” strike of 1947 noteworthy, then and now: With only $61 in their local union’s treasury, the workers took on one of the world’s most powerful corporations — and won....

The leaders of this new local, said FE literature, believed in “something hitherto almost unknown in Louisville — their policy of militant trade-unionism, their conviction that once the Negro and white workers were united, the low-wage system of the South would collapse.” Its president was hard-charging, hard-drinking and politically radical Chuck Gibson, a white worker from the assembly department. Fred Marrero, already known in Louisville as an outspoken African-American activist, was the Local’s Secretary-Treasurer. African-Americans Sterling Neal and Jim Wright were also key leaders. And the FE staffer assigned to Louisville was Bud James, a patrician-turned-firebrand, who’d abandoned his University of Chicago education first to join the Communist Party and then to sign on as an FE organizer. Within this group, the oldest was in his early 30s and all but Neal had seen active combat during World War II.

As their first undertaking, they decided to challenge International Harvester over the very reason the company had come to Kentucky in the first place.

Harvester claimed a “belief in Louisville and its future” brought it to town, but Local 236 insisted the company was instead drawn by “bright dreams of cheap Southern labor.” Wages “are set in accordance with the generally prevailing rates in a given community,” so Harvester said to defend its Louisville pay scale, the lowest at any IH factory.

It was this “Southern differential” that Local 236 leaders vowed to eliminate.

But before taking on management, they first needed to convince the Louisville workforce that they were owed more than they were being offered. Initially, it was a tough sell. Harvester’s wages were at least as good as those paid by nearby employers, and for blacks, in particular, the plant promised opportunities unavailable elsewhere. Jim Wright remembers that even he had to be persuaded at first:

“To the common guy on the street, that got a job at Harvester, well, you’d think he’d gone to heaven. They give those guys jobs, give them a machine — hell, a Negro couldn’t even look at a machine nowhere, wouldn’t even let him clean it up — and here they were running it, had all these benefits, and things. If a guy in Indianapolis, or someplace like that, doing the same job like I was on, and I was getting 35 cents an hour less than he was getting, I used to think that was all right …”

Yet the Local 236 leadership hammered away at the differential.

“We make the same tractors [Harvester] sells to the same farmers; they don’t sell a Southern tractor one penny cheaper than they sell another tractor,” Sterling Neal said, recalling the arguments they used. “We’re not going to be second-class citizens in the South.”

To prevail on this point, Local 236 leaders insisted that racial unity was essential. FE literature emphasized that “the Southern bosses for generations had played Negro against white, and white against Negro” and insisted “there was a direct connection between that and the fact that Southern workers were the lowest paid in the country.”

Given the characteristics of the workforce — the vast majority white, many from outside Louisville — Jim Wright was not sure this would prove a winning argument. “We had hillbillies, that’s all we had,” he said. “Farmers. Guys who wore overalls. Chewed tobacco, spitting on the floor. And those kind of guys were racist — I mean real racist.”

FE leaders in Louisville hoped they had convinced workers, both black and white, to challenge their status as “second-class citizens” within the Harvester empire. It was nonetheless a gamble when, on Sept. 17, 1947, a union contingent went to the front office with petitions calling for the elimination of the “Southern differential.” But when the plant manager refused to discuss the matter, “a lot of the workers spontaneously began to shout, ‘Let’s hit the bricks,’” Sterling Neal recalled.

“It wasn’t started as a strike — it was merely a demonstration in the shop,” Bud James said, adding, however, “the guys were so startled by seeing their own strength that they pulled out together” and the plant emptied out. The Local didn’t have a union hall yet, so James scrambled to find one; FE leaders were also uncertain whether their walkout was legal — especially because a new law, the Taft-Hartley Act, had just been passed — so they dubbed it “a continuous meeting.” And they didn’t even have a membership roster or a list of employees, so the day after the strike began they put out a call for workers to come by the new union hall in downtown Louisville to sign up for picket duty — or rather, register as “meeting notifiers” — figuring that way they’d be able to collect some names. The response stunned even the leadership, as James recalled:

“Well, the next day something like 2,000 people showed up, and there was a double line, and the girls at the typewriters spent the whole day giving them their slips and their duties. This double line stretched out into the hall, down the stairs and onto the sidewalk and clear around the block. They waited all day in line to register for that strike. I’ll never forget that line.”

With this early demonstration of enthusiasm, the walkout became what Jim Wright called “a humdinger.” Production was entirely halted at the plant, as sizable picket lines patrolled the gates, at first turning back even management personnel. This was too much for Harvester to accept; “unlawfully and by force,” the company argued in court, Local 236 had effected “a seizure of the Louisville Works [which] resulted in the denial to Harvester of access to its own property except by permission of the union.” Ten days into the walkout, IH got the injunction it sought, limiting to two the number of strikers at any of the plant’s six entrances.

This didn’t change things much, however, as Chuck Gibson seized on the fact that the order omitted any mention of how often substitutions were allowed. “Nothing can prevent you from replacing a fellow worker every 30 seconds,” Gibson told the Local’s members, and so they still congregated near the plant — sometimes over 1,000 strong — waiting to take their turn on the line. Since the surrounding area was then largely vacant countryside, the police tolerated the throngs, so long as they “stood away from the gates.”

But they frequently pressed too close. In one two-day stretch in October, for instance, 30 union members, both black and white — including Chuck Gibson, Bud James, Fred Marrero and Jim Wright — were arrested for various forms of picket-line misconduct. Gibson was charged with overturning a plant foreman’s car — while the foreman was still in it. Once out on bail, they went back at it again: James was hauled in at least six times during the strike. Though Harvester invited employees to return, few did; the union claimed only a few dozen white workers, and no African-Americans, crossed the picket line.

“In Louisville there hadn’t been a successful strike in an industry,” Sterling Neal indicated, “since anybody could remember … it wasn’t like Detroit or Chicago or Pittsburgh, or someplace where shops had been shut down. It just had never been done here.” Yet the Local’s rank-and-file took easily to aggressive, and creative, labor activism. One morning, 800 World War II veterans in the Local, wearing their old uniforms, paraded around the plant, led by an African-American, former Marine sergeant. On another occasion, they parked their cars, three abreast, on the street leading to the plant; traffic was gridlocked as the union conducted a meeting in the middle of the road.

The FE also appealed to the broader public, insisting that “Harvester is not being a good citizen of this community.” The differential enriched the company and the McCormicks, while Louisville workers “can afford to buy less consumer goods, less services, less of what the farmer produces.” On their lone hand-operated mimeograph machine, Neal said, “we ran off about 10,000 handbills a day” and union members “went out into the street corners and left the stuff all over town.”

Some material was distributed even farther afield. “Quite a few of the boys had relatives all around through what we call Kentuckiana, between here and Indianapolis and as far South as the Tennessee line, and those fellows making the trips over the weekend while we were on strike, they’d take a lot of those handbills and they’d leave them off in these little hamlets [and] the general stores,” Neal recalled. Strikers’ wives, as well, visiting “scores of rural communities” helped circulate fliers pointing out to small farmers — the IH Cub’s customer base — “that they would not get the tractor any cheaper if the tractor was made in Louisville but still the company wanted to pay a cheaper wage.”...

But the militant FE, beset not just by International Harvester but the labor establishment too — was declared “communist-dominated” and expelled from the CIO in 1949. It was unable to survive. In 1955, the FE merged into the much larger United Auto Workers.

So the union and the company are both long gone. But something remarkable happened at the plant that once stood on Crittenden Drive: Black and white workers there decided that none of them should be “second-class citizens,” and fighting together, they got what they deserved.
