When the Racetrac chain of convenience stores was deciding whether to install electric vehicle chargers, project lead Rushi Patel started with a blank Excel sheet and a lot of questions. Did the financials make sense? Where is the best to install them? What features should they have? The answers to questions like these could go a long way toward establishing an economic argument for building out Americaâs public EV charging infrastructure.
âWe found our guests using new types of fuels, like electrons, and we wanted to be with them as part of that journey,â said Patel, the diversified energy manager at Metroplex Energy, a subsidiary of Racetrac. But he was clear that âitâs important to have an offer that does make money.âÂ
Patel slowly started to populate his spreadsheet in 2021, filling cells with EV adoption rates, utility prices, construction costs and a range of other metrics. He also took the companyâs executives on a two-hour tour of charging spots in Atlanta, where Racetrac is based. One was tucked behind a shopping plaza, the other was deep within the bowels of a mall garage. It was clear to them that Racetrac could do better.
Two years later, Racetrac installed its first Level 3 fast charger in Oxford, Alabama â complete with the companyâs logo and a canopy to shade people from the sun as they pump electrons. It has since opened seven more in three states. So far, he said, â[the business model] is holding up pretty well.â
Those eight chargers are among the 61,000 that blanket the country, a figure that has more than doubled since 2022. The increase comes as mounting evidence shows EV charging stations can be a boon to businesses, and not only by selling electricity.Â
A recent study in the journal Nature Communications looked at chargers in California and found that, pre-pandemic, businesses saw an average annual boost of $1,500 when at least one of the devices stood nearby. Another paper examined Tesla Supercharger installations nationally and saw they brought a 4 percent increase in visitors to a business. The effect was particularly pronounced if the chargers were within 500 feet, and if it was the first one in the area. This boon is due to the fact that it can take 30 minutes or more to fully charge an EV, giving drivers plenty of time to shop.
âThe places that tend to get the biggest bump, is the place that aligns with how long it takes you to charge your car,â said Gordon Burtch, an author of the paper and a professor of information systems at Boston Universityâs Questrom School of Business. âSit-down restaurants arenât benefiting as much as fast-food restaurants.â

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) â Lost in the hubbub surrounding California's new $20-per-hour minimum wage for fast food workers is how that raise could impact public schools, forcing districts to compete with the likes of McDonald's and Wendy's for cafeteria workers amid a state budget crunch.
The minimum wage law that took effect Monday guarantees at least $20-per-hour for workers at fast food restaurant chains with at least 60 locations nationwide. That doesn't include school food service workers, historically some of the lowest-paid workers in public education.
Yet demand for school meals is higher than ever in California, the first state to guarantee free meals for all students regardless of their family's income. And demand is projected to fuel an increase of more than 70 million extra meals in California schools this year compared to 2018, according to the state Department of Education.
But these jobs typically have lots of turnover and are harder to fill. The minimum wage boost for fast food workers could make that even more difficult.
âThey are all very worried about it. Most are saying they anticipate it will be harder and harder to hire employees,â said Carrie Bogdanovich, president of the California School Nutrition Association.
Statewide, some districts have already taken steps to compete in the new reality. Last year, the Sacramento Unified School District â anticipating the law's passage â agreed to a 10% increase for its food service workers and other low-paying jobs, followed by another 6% increase July 1 of this year to bump their wages up to $20 per hour.
Cancy McArn, the district's chief human resources officer, said it was the largest single raise in the district in nearly three decades.
âWe are looking not only at competing with districts and comparing with districts, we're also looking at fast food places,â McArn said.
In Southern California, San Luis Coastal Unified doubled its food service staff to 40 people after seeing a 52% increase in the number of students eating school meals. The district prepares 8,500 meals daily for 7,600 students across 15 school sites â breakfast, lunch and even supper options for youth in after-school sports and activities.
The district has since limited the number of its entry-level positions, which are the hardest to fill, while seeking to hire more for complex roles like âculinary leadâ and âcentral kitchen supervisorâ that require more skills and hours â making them more attractive to job seekers.
âThatâs allowed us to be more competitive,â said Erin Primer, director of food and nutrition services for the San Luis Coastal Unified School District.
Tia Orr, executive director of the Services Employees International Union California â which represents both school food service workers and fast food employees â said school districts and other service industries must consider raising wages because of this new law.
âThis is a good thing, and it is long overdue,â she said.
But some districts are limited in what they can do. In the Lynwood Unified School District in Los Angeles County, the starting salary for food service workers is $17.70 per hour and maxes out at $21.51 per hour, according to Gretchen Janson, the district's assistant superintendent of business services. She said these workers only work three hours per day, meaning they aren't eligible for health benefits.
Janson says the district is waiting to see how employees react, adding: âWe just don't have the increase in revenue to be able to provide additional funding for staff.â
Nuria Alvarenga has worked food service in the Lynwood School District for 20 years. She makes $21 per hour now, but said she could likely earn more in fast food.
While she said several co-workers were considering finding other jobs, she hasn't decided yet what she will do. She normally works at an elementary school, but has been filling in recently at a high school where she enjoys seeing former students recognize her as they stand in line for lunch.
âI'm so glad they still remember me,â she said.
School food service workers have gotten more support in recent years under a state push to expand school meals and make them more nutritious. That included $720 million in recent years for upgrades to school kitchens to better prepare fresh meals, plus $45 million to create an apprenticeship program to professionalize the industry.
It would be difficult for lawmakers to mandate a raise for school food workers given the complexities of the state's school funding formula. That's why some advocacy groups, including the Chef Ann Foundation, proposed a state-funded incentive program that would have given school food workers who completed an apprenticeship program a $25,000 bonus payable over five years.
That idea didn't make it into Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's budget proposal released in January. The state is facing a multibillion dollar budget deficit, limiting new spending.
But pay raises aren't the only incentives school districts can offer. There's also health insurance, paid vacation, no night or weekend shifts and a pension that could guarantee a monthly income after retirement. Plus, school food workers have predictable hours, letting them work other jobs if they wish â or in summer when school is out.
âRestaurants are laying off employees. They're cutting hours,â said Eric Span, director of nutrition services for the Sweetwater Union High School District in San Diego County. âI think we should position ourselves to really talk about some stability.â
Michael Reich, a labor economics professor at the University of California-Berkeley, said those factors could favor school districts when competing for workers.
âWorking in a school cafeteria gives you more stability, job security and maybe less stress than in a profit making institution,â he said. âSo there's a lot of advantages from a community standpoint. But that's not to say they don't also want to get more money.â

â headcanon . Quinn's corporate structure, management and key business segments
I wanted to further expand a bit on how Quinn is structured in Path to Nowhere given the details offered by canon sources and which help put certain things into perspective. Eirene's beloved child, Quinn is a business conglomerate headquartered in DisCity and also the biggest private enterprise of the city (with tax revenue generated being over a billion, according to her interrogation). In other words: there is no other company with a similar turnover and/or importance for DisCity (and Eastside) such as Quinn.
In terms of corporate structure:
Quinn was founded by Eirene upon moving to Eastside, however it eventually went through an IPO and is currently listed at the local stock exchange. Shares for Quinn are therefore freely traded in the regulated market, making it a public company (see how Eirene remarks on the effects that her imprisonment may have on the stock price, as well as how her successful management of the sleepwalker incident boosted Quinn's corporate value and even how Eastside councilors were willing to use Quinn to break the monopoly on hypercube transportation).
This doesn't mean that Eirene surrendered her power - in fact, only Class A shares are available to be traded; Eirene is the sole holder of Class B shares which are exclusive for her (as the single founder) and have super voting rights - therefore, although Eirene has approximately 5% of the total shares, her Class B privileges grant Eirene approximately 25% of voting power.
The entity listed at DisCity's stock exchange is Quinn Holdings Inc.; Quinn Holdings is the sole shareholder of several different subsidiaries, which are operational and engaged in the actual businesses that carry the Quinn seal. Overall, the holding and its subsidiaries form the 'Quinn Group', which is the biggest private conglomerate of DisCity alluded to above ('private' in the sense that the government has no involvement rather than being privately held).
In terms of management:
Eirene is referred by canon sources as president (epilogue of the Dreamy Bubble event), CEO (her standard outfit image description) and director of Quinn (performance in serving team details). For the purposes of my portrayal and given how controlling (and frankly, workaholic) Eirene seems to be, I don't think Quinn would have different people serving as president & CEO - she has therefore retained both positions and reigns absolute over the company's management, while also having a seat at the board of directors.
Quinn has an one-tier board structure at the holding level and directors are appointed directly by shareholders - Eirene self-appoints herself routinely given the rights associated to her super-voting shares and Quinn's articles of association. Eirene also has a seat at the board of directors of all operational subsidiaries, however she doesn't get involved as much - people report to her on operational matters and she works in a more supervisory role.
In terms of key business segments:
The first industry that Quinn targeted was the hypercube one - however, considering how important it is and that only government companies are allowed to deal with mining and processing, Quinn invested in closely related activities that also made sense given the trade channels with Outlands - therefore, Quinn's first line of business is freight and transportation, including external (import and export from DisCity to Outlands and other settlements) and local (delivery and passenger transportation services within DisCity).
The second business line that Quinn joined and which grew to be incredibly relevant as part of the group portfolio was entertainment: as further confirmed by the archives in-game, Eastside is a 'never-ending party', and all forms of entertainment play a significant role. Quinn owns the Midsummer Night's Club, one of Eastside's most respectable locations, as well as several restaurants, nightclubs, bars and a record & production company for musicians (which is mentioned in Joan's profile).
The third segment that Quinn started to participate was the production of personal care items and fashion lines; Eirene herself is the greatest ambassador to her own brands (as indicated under the details for her files under 'performance in serving team') and they are all manufactured with high quality ingredients and materials, often sourced from exclusive distributors/suppliers and engaging a number of influencers and others famous actors and entertainers to showcase them.
This list is non-exhaustive; Eirene is, as shown in-game, always looking for new business opportunities, and is involved with minor activities such as financing and hospitality; however, the main three lines above correspond to approximately 90% of the group's revenue and have the strongest association to Quinn as a brand.

When student hunger strikes, 'Foodie Munchies' are here to help. As we know, food is our primary need. We can resist from buying new clothes, but it will be hard to resist hunger. This is why our start up will make college life easier. Sprawling campuses and people with packed schedules are the perfect environment for a delivery service.
During the beginning of the pandemic, restaurants and food establishments only offered options for take-out and delivery. As the COVID-19 pandemic persists, considering this type of service might just be the key ingredient in enabling our startup to generate a revenue.
Figuring out a daily routine and regular eating schedule can be challenging for us. Amid juggling schoolwork, extracurriculars, social activities and other opportunities, we often neglect to eat well.
As a student nutritionist and dietitian, we college students need to prioritize eating healthy, balanced meals each day. Learning to eat well will boost our health and enhance our college experience overall. Food establishment outside campus could have been a solution, but not all have enough time to go there between classes. Thus, a food delivery service is one way to solve this problem. Students arenât the only customer base. Faculty and staff also will love the fact that they can get their food delivered to them in their office.
We came up with the idea of making food more accessible. An online platform that connects to various food stores in and outside campus that allows customers to place orders. We will charge a delivery fee and will hire students in need of extra money to be student riders.
To put our hypothesis to test, we interviewed one of the owners of a food store on campus. She either agreed or disagreed with the idea, because for her it is first to identify the food consumers' preferences. The interview progressed and reached up to eight (8) student respondents. The basis for the interview were as follows; Distance of the market place, compliance to food delivery and compliance to delivery fees.
DISTANCE OF THE MARKET PLACE
 An approximate of 8 of 8 respondents (100%) claimed to have difficulties buying food because of the distance-factors of food stalls available.
COMPLIANCE TOO FOOD DELIVERY
 An approximate of 8 of 8 respondents (100%) agree on availing food delivery.
COMPLIANCE TO DELIVERY FEEâs
 An approximate of 7 out of 8 respondents agreed to be willing to pay for the delivery fee. The remaining one (1) respondents is uncertain.
Although the result of the interview we conducted have high agreed compliance. As of now now, we still need to do more research and time it right.
âTo become a student entrepreneur, I've learned that all I need is a great business idea that adds value to the lives of your target audience, a plan, and a resilient mindset. And, both academically and entrepreneurially, don't be afraid to ask for help, make mistakes, and take risks.â
