Getting Characters from A to B
Oftentimes a plot requires the characters to get from point A to B. They need to cross the wilderness to get to the next town, or climb to the top of the mountain, or take a boat to the other continent. But long paragraphs of just walking or moving is obviously not that interesting to read, so here are some elements to add to your travelling sections that accomplish the A to B and more.
1. It’s about the characters
If you’ve ever travelled with someone, you know that everything about your dynamic is amplified after spending like 72 straight hours with them. Use this with your characters—every little hidden grudge or flame or annoyance comes out when things get boring or stressful. This is a great time to really delve into character conflicts or even romance subplots, or any other way you’d like to develop the group dynamic. Also, there’s no better place to get the truth out of someone than being trapped in a car or on the road with them for days on end!
On another note, the slower parts of travel also allow for more quiet moments where your character can process what's happened so far. Especially in fast paced stories with lots of conflict, you may opt for a uneventful section of travel where they have time to grieve or plan or otherwise unpack things.
2. Switch up group roles
Travelling tends to carve out the same roles. Usually there is the leader who is driving the group forward and making decisions, the navigator who knows which way to go, the snack/food provider—who may be rationing or even hunting depending on the survival situation--and the one who has a hidden motive that is making them be difficult or drag their heels and provide conflict. These roles are a great way to force a change in dynamic between characters, and can inspire conflict between them.
3. Increase the stakes
A trip isn’t really a trip until something goes wrong. Whether the navigator was reading the map wrong, a bag of rations falls over the cliff side, someone gets injured, or there seems to be some creature stalking them, an increase of stakes raises the tension and creates opportunities for the group to work together or fall apart. For more tips on how to increase stakes, check out my post here:
4. Don’t be afraid to skip past the boring stuff
Once you’ve done what you wanted to do with the trip—broken a friendship, or a leg,, or both—don’t be afraid to skip in time for when they reach their destination. In fact, you’ll likely skip time for several parts of the trip in between interesting scenes between characters or moments where they’re facing against some conflict. We as the readers will assume that they continued on with their travels and just that nothing of note had happened in between.
I hope that helps!

Was tagged by @starfoozle to share some of the books on my to-read list for 2025 (thank you, friend, this is a fun one!)
First on my list of reading goals is actually to try to finish at least a couple of the in-progress books I carried with me into the new year, but for this challenge I picked ones I haven't actually started yet -- with the exception of Wonder and the Order of Nature, which I read a chapter of for a class years ago and loved (and which may or may not end up being the beginning of PhD dissertation reading in 2025).
This list is mostly non-fiction, as is my wont, though there are a couple fiction books in here for once -- both recommended by friends, so I'm slightly more optimistic I'll actually read and enjoy them. I hear tell the Rivers of London series even has a canon aromantic character, and that Mongrels is actually good werewolf fiction, so I may scratch a couple itches with my reading this year.
Tagging @marypsue @tam--lin @eternalgirlscout @so-i-did-this-thing @lafseanchai @professionalowl and @eighthdoctor, though of course there's no obligation to participate (I just suspect all of you have excellent to-read lists, haha)

I am using this post to manifest into the iwtv series this Devil's Minion moment, as witnessed telepathically by Lestat, from Queen of the Damned... I NEED it.
"Darkness. A brick cellar. A coffin made of oak and polished to a fine luster. Locks of gold. The magic moment; the locks opened as if sprung by an invisible key. The lid rose, revealing the satin lining. There was a faint scent of Eastern perfume. I saw Armand lying on the white satin pillow, a seraph with long full auburn hair; head to one side, eyes blank, as if to wake was unfailingly startling. I watched him rise from the coffin, with slow, elegant gestures; our gestures, for we are the only beings who routinely rise from coffins. I saw him close the lid. Across the damp brick floor, he walked to yet another coffin. And this one he opened reverently, as if it were a casket containing a rare prize. Inside, a young man lay sleeping; lifeless, yet dreaming."

Being a G*wynriel must be exhausting. They keep holding on to two sentences of a bonus chapter because nothing supports their ship. They keep checking our tags to copy theories, call us delusional, and feel better about themselves. They seem to think that the louder they are, and the more they insist that their ship should be endgame, SJM will change her plans and give them what they want.
Meanwhile, this is us Elriels watching their constant meltdown, knowing that we don’t need the BC because our ship has always been there. We don’t need a couple of misinterpreted sentences. We have countless interactions and four books to support our ship. We don’t need to interpret SJM’s intentions as if we were reading an ancient text. It’s all on the page.
The amount of anons I’ve been getting since I posted about Gwynriel being endgame is insane. Do you guys have jobs? Do you guys have a life? Do you guys have hobbies? —Just curious
I’m sorry that you’re so threatened by what Sarah wrote in ACOSF and Azriel’s bonus chapter that you feel the need to bombard others with all these weird anons.
To answer your question: No it’s not exhausting being Gwynriel because I know how Sarah writes her mates and they’re mate coded. Not only are they mate coded in Azriel’s bonus chapter but they’re also mate coded in the book “A Court of Silver Flames.”
And saying that Elain and Azriel have “4 books of buildup” is a HUGE STRETCH. They do not have 4 books of build up. They barely even interact. But you keep shipping your ship.
Condolences when the next book comes out and it’s not your ship 🤭🤭

I'm at this weird halfway point where I agree that the show shouldn't have made Rand OP from the beginning, but on the opposite end we run into problems where he isn't as powerful rn as he should be. Namely, that he hasn't had a raging sun equivalent.
And I do like what they've done with Rand's channeling so far. He channels more like a Forsaken, can handle more weaves and can channel more precisely than most, and has had several powerful channeling moments that were destructive. They just weren't explosive/showcasing him as the Dragon. He needed something to show the world his potential rather than a few people I think is the general consensus

Ways to increase luck in your home
Increasing luck energy in your home can be approached from various perspectives, such as feng shui, positive mindset, and creating a harmonious environment.
Here are a few ways to enhance luck energy in your home:
1. Declutter and Organize: Keep your living space clean, tidy, and clutter-free. Clutter can obstruct the flow of positive energy, so creating a well-organized environment allows luck to circulate freely.
2. Enhance Natural Light: Open curtains and blinds to allow natural light to enter your home. Natural light promotes a sense of positivity and vitality, creating a brighter and more auspicious atmosphere.
3. Use Colors Wisely: Incorporate colors associated with luck and prosperity, such as red, gold, purple, and green. You can use these colors in your decor, artwork, or accessories to infuse positive energy into your surroundings.
4. Add Plants and Fresh Flowers: Plants and flowers bring life and vibrancy into your home. Choose plants with rounded leaves, such as jade plants or money plants, as they are believed to attract wealth and good fortune.
5. Create a Welcoming Entrance: The entrance to your home is important in inviting positive energy. Keep it clean, well-lit, and clutter-free. Consider adding auspicious symbols or a beautiful doormat to create a positive first impression.
6. Arrange Furniture Thoughtfully: Arrange furniture in a way that promotes a smooth flow of energy throughout your home. Avoid blocking doorways or obstructing pathways with furniture, as it may impede luck energy.
7. Display Symbols of Luck: Decorate your home with symbols of luck and prosperity, such as a laughing Buddha, lucky coins, or a horseshoe. These symbols are believed to attract positive energy and good fortune.
Remember, the concept of luck can vary from person to person, so it's essential to create an environment that resonates with your own beliefs and preferences.

in my head where daringlizzie are entirely real and true and canon i think daring wld be sooo normal ab the wonderlandians like alistair is fr just some guy to him and it wld be so fawking funny bc alistair CANNOT STAND HIM. alistair cant be normal ab him bc he thinks bunny might have a crush on daring (she doesnt) + thats so fawking rude of daring especially since hes dating lizzie + he still CANT BELIEVE lizzie fell for an idiot like him. she deserves so much better. i think alistair wld try sooo hard to be normal like who even is this guy hes just some guy. ESPECIALLY bc daring is nothing but polite and nice to him but it just pisses him off even more. and he KNOWS that this hatred is entirely one sided like he is not above giving daring a shovel talk and making him think that murder is totally allowed in wonderland if its the name of lizzie (they wld literally never find ur body dude) and daring wld be like haha what a silly thing to say! u wonderlandians r always so funny! and it wld drive alistair crazy. literally who is this guy and why does lizzie like him so much

Sigh. I've been bullied. I guess. I did a big swing and a miss on last years list, but I have a Plan this time. A Theme. A Goal. This will be mostly comprised of my Illumicrate books so I can decide if it is in fact worth it to keep my subscription going until the Alecto edition gets announced. If I don't actually enjoy the majority of the books in these boxes then what's the point, yknow?
So here's this years color key:
Green - Carry over from last year (not carrying over every missed book, which probably means I should just get rid of them huh)
Purple - Illumicrate books
Blue - I own these in physical form, but they're not from Illumicrate
Labyrinth's Heart by MA Carrick
The Faithless by CL Clark
The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri
City of Bones by Martha Wells
Witch King by Martha Wells
After the Forest by Kell Woods
Voyage of the Damned by Frances White
Of Jade and Dragons by Amber Chen
The Phoenix Keeper by SA Maclean
A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft
Until We Shatter by Kate Dylan
Mistress of Lies by KM Enright
Hammajang Luck by Makana Yamamoto
A Sorceress Comes to Call by T Kingfisher
The Bone Shard War by Andrea Stewart
The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso
The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal
He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker Chan
All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault by James Alan Gardner
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst
Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne
In the Ravenous Dark by AM Strickland
A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab
PHEW. Okay. A fw things to note. A Dark and Drowning Tide is an Illumicrate book, but I didn't pay for it. A friend gave it to me after I skipped that month because she wasn't interested. I always look up book spoilers and skip if I'm not interested and if I'm uninterested in any of the stuff I'll skip even if the book seems neat. That month the box was full of fandoms I didn't care about, so my friends said "here, take my copy" and I said "yay! Free book!"
The Last Hour Between Worlds I think was also an Illumicrate book? They do fanart for it so I assume it was at some point. I did not get it. This is not the IC edition. I was not thrilled about The Tethered Mage so I was going to get this out of the library. Then my mom bought it for me for the holidays. So yay! Free book!
I think I would also like to keep track of books I purchase this year. I'd like to cut down on buying books that I won't love. So I'd like to utilise my library more. Win win, I think! And that seems easier than a full out ban since yeah sometimes I do enjoy little treats! Books purchased for other people do not count, obviously.
There are also some books I'd like to reread this year, mainly The Bone Maker because I've been saying that since I read it the first time. And honestly, I've been chasing the same vibes and haven't been able to match it (Godkiller got close!).
As usual, I reserve the right to pretend this post doesn't exist, but I think I've set myself up for success here :)
I don't know who hasn't done this by now @logarithmicpanda ? Have you?? Consider yourself tagged >:3c
oh right I was bullied tagged by @bigcats-birds-and-books
