2 and 3 for the book asks? 📚
2. Did you reread anything?
Yeah! When I got ill with covid I rewatched BBC Robin Hood as a comfort show, so I also reread the Scarlet trilogy by AC Gaughan (which is a Robin Hood retelling). The first book was good, but it was downhill from there :')
3. What were your top 5 books of the year?
Good!! Question!!
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
The Thousand Eyes by A.K. Larkwood
Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett
You and Me on Vacation by Emily Henry
end of year book ask!

Hallowe'en Book Tag #bookbloggers #HalloweenBookTag
Here is my slant on the Hallowe’en Book Tag which was originally created by Naomi the Book Lover on YouTube. I first saw it on Novel Lives. #1 My review of “Catherine House” #2 “The Last House on Needless Street” has a character that is a trick (my review) “Hungry Hill” has a character who is a treat (my review) #3 I’d like to be Mags Munroe for a day. She is a police officer in small town…

Late to the party (as usual), but here's my contribution to the #IfIWereABook trend.
If I were a book, it would have:
• asexual rep • cats on cats on cats • dad jokes • online meet cute • mental health rep • only one bed • friends-to-lovers • pop culture references • probably a rom-com • banter for daaaays! • constant internal monologs
Other than being a rom-com, it'd probably be set in college? Idk. That's at least when my partner and I met.
What's one thing a book about you would have?

Duke, new to the family, awkwardly entering the kitchen where various members of the Waynes are hanging out/baking/drooling over the baking: Uh… random question, is Tim dating someone?
Steph, all her training focused on stealing baked goods: oh yeah he’s got a boyfriend, why?
Duke, just wanted a book, utterly disgusted: I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t outing him if I told you he’s currently defiling the library.
Jason, slamming down a bowl of brownie batter: he’s fucking WHAT-

Hello my loves❤️!!
I've said that I do not intend to discuss anything HOFAS-related since I haven't read the book and I only know a few details I specifically asked.
But I read the beautiful, beautiful Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel Walmart chapter and I need to just gush about something. It's not the whole chapter but just small parts of it mostly relating to Azriel.
Disclaimer: I have no interest in engaging in ship discourse (annoy me and it's an immediate block) nor do I want someone to change my opinion because it will not be changed. I stick by what I read and interpret in these books and am quite happy and content with it 😉
⚠️ Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel Bonus Chapter Spoilers Ahead! ⚠️
And with each mile onward, she could hear Azriel humming softly to himself. The rolling, wild melody of "Stone Mother" flowed off his lips, and she could have sworn even the shadows danced at the sound.
Do you realize that the entire time Bryce was playing the songs on her phone, she made no comments on Azriel's shadows but towards the end when her phone's battery died and Azriel started humming to himself, then she made a note of the shadows dancing at his sound.
They did not dance to her songs, they dance to Azriel's humming and I find that so endearing!!
It proves my point again at the instances we get descriptions of Azriel's shadows singing are with positive connotations. Their dancing is not written to be nefarious or odd.
Pray tell, in the entire series when Az's shadows are described to be dancing, which scenarios triggered those actions? Mostly when it comes to Gwyn because if you search in every book you won't find a description of them dancing around someone except Gwyn. This is a point I've been making since ACOSF came out and I'll highlight them below:
• These excerpts are from Azriel's bonus chapter
"How was the party?" Her breath curled in front of her mouth, and one of his shadows darted out to dance with it before twirling back to him. Like it heard some silent music.
Gwyn wasn't singing here, they were reacting to some silent music... which we can suspect as much is the mating bond? A bond Sarah described in ACOSF as music between souls?
Azriel entered the warmth of the stairwell, and as he descended, he could have sworn a faint, beautiful singing followed him. Could have sworn his shadows sang in answer.
His shadows sang in answer. We don't know for sure if Gwyn was singing or it was something else but I'll bet on the latter since she was training and one of his shadows earlier darted out to dance with her breath as if it heard some silent music. It still reaffirms to me that it can hear the music between souls, the mating bond.
• This is from ACOSF (pg. 623) and keep in mind this is post-Solstice/Azriel's bonus chapter
Azriel clapped his hands, and all the females straightened. "You'll work in groups of three."
Gwyn asked Az, her teal eyes bright,
"What do we get if we finish the course?"
Az's shadows danced around him. "Since there's no chance in hell any of you will finish the course, we didn't bother to get a prize."
One of the things I absolutely love when it comes to SJM's romances is she creates a common ground for the couple and gives them some things to bond and connect to.
In this instance, it's not only about Azriel's shadows but the fact that he also is fond of music. He doesn't express his fondness through dancing like Nesta, he hums to the tune. He sings.
Who else adores music and sings? Gwyn.
Who made Azriel admit that he sings? Gwyn.
These are not a coincidental connections.
And the author is a big fan of music so I think it's such a beautiful connection to create between two characters that have had such a dark and tragic past and are still processing the trauma they experienced.
The chapter did not give us much in terms of ships or who is Azriel into, but it did elaborate more on Azriel's fondness for music. It did elaborate on the genuine reactions of his shadows which were sometimes always framed in a negative way.
It also kind of proved my cute headcanon about whenever Azriel sings, his shadows dance around him.
I honestly can't wait for his book!! But first we have to tackle HOFAS so look forward to my reading updates in a few days!

Love in the Shadows Pt. 1
Summary:
Azriel's mission takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Y/n, a mysterious woman in a dangerous situation. The events of that night not only save Y/n's life but also change Azriel's forever.
Word count: 735
Warnings: None
Rescue in the Shadows
Azriel moved through the dark streets of Velaris with practiced ease, his shadows cloaking him from sight. Tonight's mission was supposed to be straightforward—gather information on a suspected rebel group stirring trouble in the lower districts. But as he approached the dilapidated warehouse where his sources indicated activity, something felt off.
He paused, his shadows whispering of danger. Quietly, he slipped into the shadows, becoming one with the darkness as he surveyed the scene. Inside the warehouse, he could make out several figures—armed and tense, their voices hushed but urgent.
And then he saw her.
She was bound and gagged, fear evident in her eyes as she was shoved to the ground. The leader of the group, a tall, scarred male, circled her like a predator.
"This one thought she could steal from us," the leader sneered. "But we'll make an example out of her."
Azriel's blood ran cold. He had seen this group before—ruthless, unforgiving. He had to act quickly. Silently, he assessed the situation, formulating a plan. He couldn't afford to make a mistake; her life depended on it.
His shadows moved ahead of him, snaking into the warehouse and creating small disturbances to distract the guards. In the confusion, Azriel slipped inside, his eyes never leaving the woman.
With a swift, calculated move, he incapacitated the nearest guard, his blade silent and deadly. One by one, he took them down, his movements a blur of efficiency. Finally, only the leader remained.
The leader turned, too late to react as Azriel's blade pressed against his throat. "Leave," Azriel hissed, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "And never return."
The leader's eyes widened in terror before he nodded frantically. Azriel released him, and the man fled, stumbling over the bodies of his fallen comrades.
Azriel's focus shifted to the woman. He knelt beside her, his hands gentle as he removed her gag and cut the ropes binding her wrists. "Are you alright?" he asked, his voice softer now.
She nodded, her eyes wide with a mix of relief and gratitude. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I... I didn't think anyone would come."
Azriel offered a reassuring smile, helping her to her feet. "You're safe now. Can you walk?"
"I think so," she replied, leaning on him for support as she took a tentative step. "Who are you?"
"Azriel," he introduced himself, his shadows retreating slightly, allowing her to see him more clearly. "I'm with the Night Court."
Her eyes widened in recognition. "I've heard of you. The Spymaster."
Azriel nodded, his expression serious. "Let's get you out of here. Can you tell me what happened?"
As they made their way out of the warehouse, she recounted her story. She had stumbled upon the rebel group's hideout by accident, and when she realized what she had found, it was too late to escape. The group had captured her, intending to make an example out of her.
"You were very brave," Azriel said, guiding her through the quiet streets. "And very lucky. Not many would survive an encounter with them."
She glanced at him, her eyes filled with admiration. "I was lucky you found me."
Azriel felt a warmth spread through his chest at her words. "I'm just glad I was there in time."
As they reached the safety of the Night Court's borders, Azriel knew this night would stay with him. Not just because of the danger, but because of her—their courage, their resilience. He felt a connection to her, something he hadn't expected but couldn't deny.
"Thank you, Azriel," she said again, her voice stronger now. "For everything."
Azriel nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "You're welcome, Y/n. And remember, you're not alone anymore. If you ever need help, you know where to find me."
In that moment, under the stars of Velaris, a bond was formed. One that would grow stronger with time, forged in the shadows but destined to shine brightly.
Author's Note: Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into how Azriel and Y/n's paths first crossed. Feel free to leave comments and let me know your thoughts!

question for book blogging people on here, just bc I'm curious!
(I'm mainly talking about people who often reblog posts about books that don't have massive established fandoms)
(also I'm tagging a couple of random book names just to not skew the votes towards general-tags, considering the question, but I'll delete those tags when it's over!)

Together.
"Does that mean Freya will have two moms?" Joffrey asked, his innocent curiosity cutting through the moment like a knife. Just as I was taking a sip of my wine, I nearly choked, coughing as Freya stirred grumpily in my arms.
Rhaenyra's eyes widened in disbelief at her youngest son's bluntness—a trait I couldn't help but think he had inherited entirely from her. It was a moment of poetic justice, watching her grapple with the candidness she often displayed, even if it came at my expense.
"Joffrey," she began, her voice a mixture of surprise and a hint of amusement, "that's not—”
"But it is, isn’t it?" Joffrey pressed on, oblivious to the weight of the conversation we had just navigated. His face lit up with excitement, eyes sparkling as he looked between us. "Freya will have you and Elizabeth both! That’s like having the best of both worlds!”
Rhaenyra paused, momentarily at a loss for words, and I could see the tension ease from her shoulders, replaced by a reluctant smile.
“Yes, I suppose you could say that,” she finally replied, shooting me a glance that was both exasperated and affectionate.
The corners of my lips turned upward, warmed by the unanticipated joy that filled the room. Joffrey’s innocent enthusiasm was infectious, reminding us all of the love that bound us together, despite the complexities of our situation. I cradled Freya a little tighter, feeling the gentle weight of her against me as if she were the embodiment of hope itself.
"And we'll take care of her, right?" Joffrey continued, his expression serious now, though his eyes still shone with that childlike brightness. "We’ll make sure she has everything she needs."
I glanced at Rhaenyra, but before she could answer, I found myself speaking, my voice steady, filled with conviction.
“Absolutely,” I said, meeting Joffrey’s earnest gaze. "We will protect her, just like we protect each other.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Rhaenyra turn toward me, her expression softening in a way that made my heart ache. There was something in her eyes, a depth of emotion I wasn’t sure I could fully grasp at that moment, but I could feel it—her gratitude, her trust, her love.
Lucerys, his earlier confusion now replaced by a wide grin, nodded enthusiastically.
“Yeah! We’re a family now, right?” His voice was full of certainty, the kind that only children seem to possess—the unwavering belief that family, no matter how unconventional, would always hold strong.
Rhaenyra’s smile broadened as she turned her attention to her sons. There was a radiant mix of pride, love, and something deeper that glimmered in her violet eyes as she gazed at them, but when she finally answered, her eyes weren’t on them—they were on me.
“Yes,” she said, her voice soft but resolute. “We are a family.”
The words hung in the air like a promise, heavier than they seemed. A warmth spread through me, a quiet assurance that, despite the chaos and uncertainty that surrounded us, this—what we had here—was real. It was something we could hold on to, something that could carry us through the battles ahead.
Freya stirred in my arms, her tiny fingers curling tighter around my thumb as she let out a soft coo, as if she, too, was claiming her place in this newfound family. I looked down at her, then back at Rhaenyra, and for the first time in a long while, I allowed myself to believe in the flicker of hope that sparked within me—a hope that maybe, just maybe, we could survive this.
Together.
