✨ The Wingman: One Year Anniversary ✨

✨💛🌈Hello, everyone!🌈💛✨

One year ago, after eating a succulent Thanksgiving Dinner with my family, I made the bold choice to wash it down by launching my longfic The Wingman on Archive Of Our Own! In between then and now, the amount of artwork, fanworks, fanfiction, kudos, comments, and support has blown me out of the water. Very fitting then, that I celebrate the season of thanks by thanking YOU for all the massive support!!

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a year. A lot has happened between now and then, huh? After launching Peter Hart in March, I’ve focused lots of time on YWIMC, and have finished my second round of editing. Lots of stories, lots of experiences, and a whole lot of fun! 🎉

Building these stories has been a phenomenal experience, and sharing my art, music, and writing with such a welcoming and inclusive community has been very inspirational. Thank you, everyone. 💛✨

So today I got a rather unkind comment on AO3 (one could call it hate), but I believe it to be a bot for several reasons:

Guest account, but username attached

Said username exists but person is unlikely to be reading Tolkien fic (according to their Tumblr and AO3, they are in other fandoms)

Two grammatically correct sentences

Super generic text that could apply to any fic:

"I've seen better fanfiction written by a toddler. Get it together!"

I'm curious, did anyone else get comments like this? Let me know.

And to those who have gotten rude comments and are now worried/upset: Maybe it was just a bot too. Either way: You're awesome for putting your writing out there for others to enjoy and you don't deserve to get rude comments for it. Nothing feels more amazing as a fanfic writer than finding the fandom, the pairing, the trope, that reawakens not only your love of writing, but also the joy that comes with just being hopelessly and unapologetically invested in something.

Write those self indulgent fics! Write those self-inserts. Write what you find joy in creating—not what you think is an objectively “good” story. If you have fun writing it, it is good. I promise there’s someone out there who will enjoy reading your stories as much as you enjoy writing them.

Is this about him being German? Absolutely. It just makes sense to me.

He whines a LOTTT. Spoiled ahh dog likes to get what he wants when he wants it.

He DEFINITELY does that little head tilt thing a lot. He's a confused boy, but a good one nonetheless.

Responds most to nicknames. König doesn't hit the same as "Schnookie-Poo".

He will automatically think your mad at him if you aren't speaking to him in a baby voice, but the second you sound distressed, he's in fight mode instantly.

Very protective, does NOT like new people, hence his social anxiety.

He can't be left alone for long. He goes through three stages: panic, sadness, and petty. He didn't MEAN to pee on the couch. It's TOTALLY your fault for not walking him before you left the house.

Huge biter. He loves biting. He likes to nibble on your hands when you two play, but he knows his strength, so he tries to be gentle with you.

Vicious with men. He hates men. Very violent with them. He doesn't try to be, but he's used to being the big boy. After all, he's not the average German Shepherd. You almost contemplated naming him Clifford simply because his size difference compared to other dogs his breed. He'll get used to your boyfriend...yk, if he lasts. Can't say he hasn't driven away a guy or two by either forceful intimidation or chewing up their belongs.

Has an awful hunching habit. Wake up in the middle of the night just to see the fuckin dog humping away at the table legs. You hate that but you refuse to get him neutered, so the spray bottle works for you.

König chewed up an old black shirt of yours and he just so happened to rip two wholes into the front where your breasts would go. Even though you hated his habit of eating up shit, you couldn't help but think it was a cute idea to throw it over his head, making him a little hood.

Love in the Shadows Pt. 1

Summary:

Azriel's mission takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Y/n, a mysterious woman in a dangerous situation. The events of that night not only save Y/n's life but also change Azriel's forever.

Rescue in the Shadows

Azriel moved through the dark streets of Velaris with practiced ease, his shadows cloaking him from sight. Tonight's mission was supposed to be straightforward—gather information on a suspected rebel group stirring trouble in the lower districts. But as he approached the dilapidated warehouse where his sources indicated activity, something felt off.

He paused, his shadows whispering of danger. Quietly, he slipped into the shadows, becoming one with the darkness as he surveyed the scene. Inside the warehouse, he could make out several figures—armed and tense, their voices hushed but urgent.

And then he saw her.

She was bound and gagged, fear evident in her eyes as she was shoved to the ground. The leader of the group, a tall, scarred male, circled her like a predator.

"This one thought she could steal from us," the leader sneered. "But we'll make an example out of her."

Azriel's blood ran cold. He had seen this group before—ruthless, unforgiving. He had to act quickly. Silently, he assessed the situation, formulating a plan. He couldn't afford to make a mistake; her life depended on it.

His shadows moved ahead of him, snaking into the warehouse and creating small disturbances to distract the guards. In the confusion, Azriel slipped inside, his eyes never leaving the woman.

With a swift, calculated move, he incapacitated the nearest guard, his blade silent and deadly. One by one, he took them down, his movements a blur of efficiency. Finally, only the leader remained.

The leader turned, too late to react as Azriel's blade pressed against his throat. "Leave," Azriel hissed, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "And never return."

The leader's eyes widened in terror before he nodded frantically. Azriel released him, and the man fled, stumbling over the bodies of his fallen comrades.

Azriel's focus shifted to the woman. He knelt beside her, his hands gentle as he removed her gag and cut the ropes binding her wrists. "Are you alright?" he asked, his voice softer now.

She nodded, her eyes wide with a mix of relief and gratitude. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I... I didn't think anyone would come."

Azriel offered a reassuring smile, helping her to her feet. "You're safe now. Can you walk?"

"I think so," she replied, leaning on him for support as she took a tentative step. "Who are you?"

"Azriel," he introduced himself, his shadows retreating slightly, allowing her to see him more clearly. "I'm with the Night Court."

Her eyes widened in recognition. "I've heard of you. The Spymaster."

Azriel nodded, his expression serious. "Let's get you out of here. Can you tell me what happened?"

As they made their way out of the warehouse, she recounted her story. She had stumbled upon the rebel group's hideout by accident, and when she realized what she had found, it was too late to escape. The group had captured her, intending to make an example out of her.

"You were very brave," Azriel said, guiding her through the quiet streets. "And very lucky. Not many would survive an encounter with them."

She glanced at him, her eyes filled with admiration. "I was lucky you found me."

Azriel felt a warmth spread through his chest at her words. "I'm just glad I was there in time."

As they reached the safety of the Night Court's borders, Azriel knew this night would stay with him. Not just because of the danger, but because of her—their courage, their resilience. He felt a connection to her, something he hadn't expected but couldn't deny.

"Thank you, Azriel," she said again, her voice stronger now. "For everything."

Azriel nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "You're welcome, Y/n. And remember, you're not alone anymore. If you ever need help, you know where to find me."

In that moment, under the stars of Velaris, a bond was formed. One that would grow stronger with time, forged in the shadows but destined to shine brightly.

Hi, do you have any advices for budding writers on AO3 or here?

Hey! :)

I've given this some thought and compiled what I hope might be some helpful pointers, but if there's anything else or anything specific you want to hear more about, feel free to ask again. Also I'm assuming this is about the amazing craft of fanfic and not, uh, building a platform or whatever (I wouldn't be very helpful with that, I'm a nobody x)).

Share what you feel comfortable sharing.

So since you're asking about budding writers on AO3 and Tumblr, I take it you're at a point where you feel comfortable sharing your writing online, which is amazing. Nevertheless, I feel the need to once again mention (just for anyone who may be in the same or a similar situation) that it's completely alright not to be comfortable with it (yet) or not to share everything you write. I share almost everything simply because I'm annoying and it makes me feel accomplished and since I've grown pretty comfortable with it, I might as well; but not everyone feels that way and feelings also change. It's completely alright to write just for yourself or a small circle of friends.

Don't worry too much about "being good".

I will be the first to admit that I deeply relate to struggling with perfectionism when it comes to writing (and other creative pursuits). However, as someone who's been reading fic for many years, tends to be into quite niche and obscure things sometimes and is rarely spoiled by big fandoms' abundance of food, I want all writers, especially new ones, to know that you don't have to write the most amazing, perfect, publishing-ready pieces. What matters is your passion and creativity, which will show in your writing regardless of skill level. Not to mention that fic is free and in fact a tool for many to experiment.

That's not to say you can't strive to improve or be good - by all means, I find it admirable if you want to hone your craft and make progress as you continue to write. Just don't let perfectionism ruin your fun and stifle your creativity.

How to get better without trying overly hard.

Aside from just writing, writing and writing (that is the most important part though), how do you improve without making it a point to do so? Well, if it works for you to read/watch guides or you enjoy specific writing exercises, that's great, but one thing that I find gets overlooked a lot in writing spaces is simply: Reading. Just reading for fun.

I find that I often discover little things in other people's writing that I really like and then I think to myself "wow, that's really neat how they did that, maybe I could take a page out of their book" (pun intended) and make it a point to pay attention to these things when I write. Essentially, it's like creating a nice patchwork blanket which is your style, made up of your own voice and preferences as a writer and cool stuff you picked up on the road.

Let me just name some examples, which, yes, are also an excuse to shamelessly blow some writer friends of mine a well-deserved kiss of appreciation. @sauron-kraut writes incredibly polished short stories with beautiful wording and atmosphere that have a lot of little hidden things to discover and dissect, and I want to steal her ability to set the stage and hide those easter eggs. @a-world-of-whimsy-5 is an absolute legend when it comes to writing medieval and medieval-adjacent stuff, and I learned so much from her fics. @i-did-not-mean-to has a way of writing with such esprit and wit that I always end up in a good mood after, a style of narrative voice I've adored for over a decade, and I've greatly improved my humorous writing in particular thanks to her. @crackinthecup has the marvelous ability to craft extremely emotionally evocative scenes, which have encouraged me to be more courageous and experimental in my sentence melody and structure. @tragedybunny has a way of writing that reminds me of coming home to a warm and comfy place, and I will find out how she did it and how I can do it as well.

So as you can see, it can be super helpful to compare notes with your fellow writers. Never be discouraged by someone else's ability; instead learn and expand your own.

Feedback, criticism and community.

Let me just get one thing out of the way: You don't have to take criticism from everyone. Or at all. As far as I understand, the fanfic community has come to to agree that we're doing this for fun and don't give criticism unprompted/when we aren't sure it's wanted or welcome. As a general rule: Take criticism from those you would also seek advice from. Ask for feedback if you feel comfortable, and if not, that's a valid boundary to have and I will gently smack anyone who presumes to pick apart writing that was made for fun and generously shared with the community for free.

The community aspect, however, should be taken into account on other fronts. While I won't tell anyone they have to interact and believe that, in an ideal world, everyone's writing would just speak for itself, it is helpful to engage with the community. Things you can do (both on Tumblr and AO3 if also applicable/possible) include: Respond to people interacting with your works, interacting with other people's works (for example while you're doing your reading sessions and looking at other writers' styles) and just overall being present, being talkative, going with the flow.

Again, this is not a must. But I will say that pretty much all of us want positive responses and interactions on their work and that just won't work if you expect everyone to show up for you all the time and never show up for anyone else. Engagement, passion and community are our "currency" in the absence of money and reciprocity is an important element of that. A lot of friction and complaints in the fanfic community regarding lack of interaction or entitlement are rooted in misunderstandings of this fundamental principle.

But don't take this in a cynical manner. Seek out what you enjoy, share the joy and passion and you'll make friends just accidentally - which is the part that I find makes fandom on AO3 and Tumblr so much fun! (I don't even want to be a "traditional" author anymore, I want this instead😁)

Find your groove and groove along.

Lastly, make sure your writing is fun for you or else it'll become a chore and eventually get ruined for you as a hobby. This is unfortunately a continuous task as your needs and interests shift - for example you might be in the mood to do an entire drabble challenge one month and during another month you feel so drained that you couldn't do another one. Or you might want to write something different for a change. Or whatever it may be.

Either way, one recent lesson I've learned is that I got too tied up in obligations and it left no space for spontaneous inspiration, so I never got to write what I wanted to write in the moment and it pushed me quite close to burnout. Do yourself a favor and always hold that space for yourself. In practice, this could for example mean that you do one event and on the side write this cool new idea you had, instead of doing three events - which is fun and games until it starts getting too much and you don't have time for your passion projects.

Finding your groove also includes the whole technical aspect, such as which writing programs you use, which device (or none at all), where you write, how to make yourself comfortable, how to get in the right headspace for things. I would also like to encourage all of you to be a bit crazy and whimsical about this: For example I've gone to the perfume store, picked out a scent for a specific character in a specific scene and sniffed it while writing the description several times now. Do what it takes. And say goodbye to your squeaky clean search history - you will research some weird stuff just to get that one line right.

So yeah, these are just my random thoughts on fic writing and what has been helpful in order for me to have lots of fun with this hobby. Happy writing!

EMERGENCY WRITING COMMISSIONS!!!!

Hello everyone. We are a system that enjoys writing fiction. Many of us write erotica as well and we are looking for commissions immediately. Why? We are homeless and live in a hotel. We were on a week and a half layoff and had to use what money we did save on food while we were not working. That pool has dried up.

We have today, 7/18/24 to get together $350 so we can stay in our hotel room. We also need $90 to cover part of a payment arrangement for our phone service that is due tomorrow. We have a cat and our spouse isn't able to work because they're trying to go to school for career purposes. We did file for unemployment to cover the week and a half we weren't working but there are delays on getting paid and that might not happen until next week.

We have been living in hotels for nearly a year now and it is tiresome. We want to get a place but paying for a hotel room every week is draining our cash. Also, shelters are not an option because we have a cat and they don't allow pets.

So we are offering writing commissions!
