Lizzy hesitated, glancing around as she tried to find something vaguely familiar, but each direction looked the same. Rows of buildings stretched out into the night, further than she could see, their doors sealed and the windows dark in the middle of the night and Lizzy felt her fingers tighten on the strap of her bag, as a wave of doubt crashed over her. "You have no idea which way to go, do you?" Booker groaned, and the threat of his imminent teasing banished her hesitation. Booker wouldn't let her live it doubt if she admitted to being lost, so she did the first thing she could think of. She lied. "Of course I do," she answered quickly, clearing her throat and pointing towards the nearest row of or orange lights, "it's this way." Without looking at Booker to see if he'd bought her bravado, Lizzy started off across the green, hoping that they would stumble over something she actually recognised before he called her on her bluff. "And what makes you so sure?" he asked, scattering her hopes to the winds, even as he fell into step beside her. Lizzy forced herself to roll her eyes like the answer was obvious, and that she wasn't making everything up on the spot. "There are lights," she told him, "and where there are lights, there are people. If there are people, Booker, then there's going to be an inn—" "A hotel." "—a hotel, and then we can stay there for the night, and figure out where to go next in the morning." "What what money, Lizzy?" Booker prompted, and she shot him a glare. "I have gems to trade, of course. I'm not a complete idiot." "Did you fail the class on the Mortal Realm, by any chance?" "Why?" she asked sharply, coming to an abrupt stop, her suspicion rising at the amusement she could hear in Booker's voice, and when she turned to face him, his green eyes were almost glimmering with barely restrained laughter. "Because humans don't work in trade anymore. Unless we can find some kind of jewellers to sell them to tomorrow, those gems of yours are worthless here." Lizzy stared at Booker for a long moment, disbelief battling with despair in her chest, before her shoulders slumped and her eyes slid closed.

One eyebrow arched slowly, and Booker backed down almost immediately, running both hands through his messy hair. “You want to place a blade in my hand and teach me to kill,” Booker muttered, and Lizzy’s breath caught as the pieces began falling into place. “And I… I can’t even lie and say I want you to. I don’t.” “Booker?” Lizzy asked softly, waiting until he looked at her, before reaching out unsteadily to touch his mind.

This is a great idea, and basically an excuse for me to talk about Darkling :D

For anyone who may not have heard me gushing about it, I published my debut novel on March 16th of this year. It's a Portal Fantasy called Changeling, and it follows the character of Lizzy Hail. A fey who uses an illegal portal to travel from the fey realm of Arbaon to the mortal realm, in an attempt to discover what happened to her missing mother.

Only in the mortal realm she, and her best friend Booker, walk into a world of not just magic-blind humans, but vampires too.

Since March, I've been working on Darkling. It's been slow progress for a lot of that time, Darkling has made me fight for every single word I have got down on paper, but it's gradually getting there. But gradually (and the fact that Darkling is a sequel) has made sharing snippets... a little more challenging.

But I miss it. So, I'm making use of your lovely post to share a Darkling Snippet, because I can and I want to :D

Potential Darkling Spoilers Beneath The Cut!

Booker had been raised at the very heart of the fey court, and being cruel came easily to him. Words were his weapons, and Lizzy's weakness, but they'd figured it out. And we can do it again, she decided, shoving back the covers and sitting up, her determination rising with her when Booker didn't so much as flinch. It was only three paces to get from her bed to his, and she poked him in the middle of the back, receiving only a grunt in response. "Move over," Lizzy said, and she only saw him start in surprise because she'd been watching for it. But he didn't move and she scowled down at him. "Booker," she warned, voice lowering, "move or I'll make you." For a moment nothing happened, but Lizzy waited, letting him consider his options. Then, with a sigh, he began to shift, moving with a slow reluctance across the bed. Lizzy didn't give him the opportunity to change his mind and dropped onto the mattress, crawling beneath the covers and settling beside him just as he rolled to face her. "What?" Booker grumbled, his words too quiet to be called snapping, but harsh enough to show his displeasure, and Lizzy just stared at him. Green eyes cold and flat. Expression neutral. His skin not quite holding the glow of a healthy fey, and his arms stayed crossed and defensive, even laying in bed. For a moment Lizzy wondered at herself; that she hadn't spotted the signs earlier. But her stubbornness was as much a weakness as it was a strength and she knew she just hadn't wanted to see all the signs of a heart breaking.

It’s become a real challenge to keep up with every Palestine protest and action happening in this country, but I am going to round-up some of that have occurred in recent days in case you missed them. Over 75 activists shut down and blocked all entrances to Boeing Building 598 in Saint Charles, Missouri. The facility manufactures the Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs) and Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) bombs that Israel is using Gaza. “We are joining millions of people across the United States and around the world in demanding an end to Israeli’s brutal assault on Gaza and its decades-long occupation of Palestine,” said Ellie Tang, a member of the anti-war organization Dissenters, in a statement. “We urge Congress and Biden to hear the calls of millions of us living in this country, and push for a ceasefire. Until Congress blocks the bombs, we will.” After shutting operations down for 2 hours, the facility canceled its deliveries for the day. 500 protesters with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) took over the Statue of Liberty’s platform, dropped banners, held a sit-in, and chanted for a ceasefire. “HAPPENING NOW AT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY: Hundreds of Jews and allies are holding an emergency sit-in, taking over the island to demand a ceasefire in Gaza. Lizzy Hail; 5'3 or 160CM

Lizzy's small, but mighty. Her mum's short too, so not knowing who her father is, she assumes she gets it from her mum.

Booker Reed; 5'10 or 177CM

Booker is in the upper end of height for a Fey. When he shot up in his early teens, he enjoyed lording it over Lizzy for a while, and it's where the habit of slinging his arm around her shoulders originated.

Nameer Khatri; 6'0 or 182CM

Nameer is exactly one inch shorter than his best friend, Andric, and it pisses him off. I think he'd have tolerated it better if there had been a bigger gap, but that one inch is so negligable, it irritates him.

Andric Roche; 6'1 or 185CM

Andric doesn't really think about his heigh much. It is what it is. It's why Nameer's only brought up his irritation once. The genuine look of confusion on Andric's face had been enough to deflate Nameer's whining.

Cara Evelyn; 5'6 or 170CM

Cara wishes she was taller. Mainly because she hates being forced to look up at people. She's fought long and hard to be respected in her kavian training classes, and she thinks if she were more imposing she wouldn't be underestimated or dismissed as easily.

I have 3 ocs for for this one:

- Reed (Model R33D), marketed as a household and childcare android. When he deviates, he decides to just ignore it and pretend it never happened

- Xavier, a single father and writer. He bought Reed so Rylee would have someone to take care of her while he was busy

- Rylee, Xavier’s 10 year old daughter. She is a chaotic sweetheart and her dad’s #1 Wingman

Reed and Xavier are gay and Rylee is ecstatic

Monster Prom (and co.)

Yeah yeah, I made an MP self-insert.

His name is Cam. He’s a flame golem and I made lore about flame golems SPECIFICALLY FOR HIM.

Basically, their bodies are made of molten rock and their heads are floating orbs of fire. If they touch water, two things happen, 1) their body will cool into solid rock that will eventually heat back up into a molten form, UNLESS 2) their head turns into steam and they just fucking die. Aka, they avoid water. Also, they can control the temperature of their bodies. It’s weird, and not well thought out, but they can choose if they want to burn people or not. It’s fun.

BOOTLEGS 2023

The year is winding down, so it's time to look back at the last 12 month's crop of live tapes. Crowd noise, tape hiss, distortion, murk ... and plenty of magic, people! As I do this year after year, I ask myself: "Why do I do this year after year?" I guess it's a habit I can't break. But I do love something about these cloudy recordings — the immediacy, the imperfections, the possibilities. Each bootleg, no matter how lo-fi, contains a glimmer of hope, a potential for beauty and transcendence. The fact that not all of them (few of them, in fact!) really deliver on that promise is part of the deal. The search continues!

For the first time in over a decade, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) did not feature a single trans speaker. Additionally, the event has been called out for failing to feature discussions of trans people. This came to light when Harvard CyberLaw Clinic instructor and trans activist Alejandra Caraballo posted on X: “This was the first DNC since 2012 to not feature a trans person speaking. ‘We’re not going back’ doesn’t apply to the trans community.” The two prior DNC events were held in 2016 and 2020. In 2016, Sarah McBride, who at the time was national press secretary with the Human Rights Campaign and not yet a state lawmaker, spoke at the convention. In 2020, then-Virginia state Delegate Danica Roem (D) spoke.

McBride was the first out trans primary speaker at a DNC event, and both DNCs had talked in detail about trans issues. However, almost none of the speakers at the DNC this year discussed transgender rights issues. There were only two direct mentions of trans people at a main speaking event: Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, and Sen. Corey Booker (D-NJ) both mentioned trans issues in passing. However, the DNC this year featured the largest number of LGBTQ+ delegates ever. Delegates are the individuals selected to represent their state or territory in order to officially nominate the presidential candidate. Over 800 delegates out of the total 4,700 were members of the LGBTQ+ community. Of that number, only around 50 were trans, according to the Harris-Walz National LGBTQ+ Engagement Director Sam Alleman. This was reportedly the largest number of trans delegates in history, in spite of making up just 1% of total delegates.

[...] Perella also had a brief speaking role during the New Jersey delegate roll call, however this was not a main speaking role and her speech lasted less than a minute. She spoke about making New Jersey and America as a whole a safe place for LGBTQ+ individuals. The Democratic platform this year states the party’s commitment to transgender rights and desire to oppose restrictions on transgender healthcare.

The DNC made a major mistake of not including a trans speaker at the convention in the wake of the GOP’s anti-trans hatred campaign, and only a couple of speakers made passing references to trans people directly.

Montana State Rep. Zooey Zephyr and/or her spouse Erin Reed should have had one, for example.
