I did it! It's done, my very first fanbinding :D
Thee illustrious @tethysresort allowed me to bind their fic Paper Lanterns which is a lovely Glorfindel/Erestor fic and I adore it and was overcome with the desire to hold it in my hands, and here it is! At long last!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am extremely please with how this book came out, it fits well in my hand, is a lovely weight, and the cereal box I used for the overs isn't nearly as floppy as I feared it would be. I was planning to use blue floss for the stitching (because blue is lovely) but I am so glad I looked around until I round a red that almost perfectly matches the red on the cover ahhhh I am just so pleased!
I started this back in January but the type setting and printing was just so awful and convoluted that I gave up for months, until April when I able to finally format my pages properly thanks to my dad (below the cut you can see all my printing attempts vs how the final fic, it's ridiculous). And then I only started making the covers a few days ago so it really just came together all at once.

With my leftover floss I made a little loop which can be twisted around the corners of the book to keep it closed, which is a great use for the leftovers that I otherwise would have thrown away.
All in all I am sooo happy with this binding! There were a lot of bumps on the way, but I'll just have to make sure to take what I've learned here and apply it to my next project!

“The common cultural narratives would tell me that I somehow failed myself, that I’m a quitter or a loser, that I just didn’t “have it,” that I gave up on my dream and that maybe I let myself succumb to the pressures of society.
But the truth is far less interesting than any of these explanations. The truth is, I thought I wanted something, but it turns out I didn’t. End of story.
I wanted the reward and not the struggle. I wanted the result and not the process. I was in love with not the fight but only the victory.”
- Mark Mason on realizing his fantasy of being a rock star wasn’t something he actually gave a fuck about. From “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck”

And, to celebrate this important holiday that honors the American Labor Movement and all the contributions workers make to the development of the United States, we are highlighting new materials related to the current state of labor, good or bad, in the U.S. and around the world.

Bittersweet Brexit: the Future of Food, Farming, Land, and Labour by Charlie Clutterbuck, Ph.D.
Although widely criticised and hugely wasteful, The Common Agricultural Policy did at least afford British farmers a degree of support. Post-Brexit, that support will vanish - to be replaced with a woefully misconceived agricultural export drive that cannot possibly deliver. Bittersweet Brexit suggests a solution: paying workers decent wages in the agricultural sector could radically transform the nature of farming in Britain. It would improve yields, increase sustainability and ensure greater self-sufficiency at a time when food security is becoming a vital issue. This scenario provides a progressive, forward-thinking and optimistic future for food and farming in Britain, which, unlike many other industries, is currently being ignored -- Back cover
The Passion Economy: the New Rules for Thriving in the Twenty-First Century by Adam Davidson
"Contrary to what you may have heard, the middle class is not dying and robots are not stealing our jobs. In fact, writes Adam Davidson-one of our leading public voices on economic issues -- the twenty-first-century economic paradigm offers new ways of making money, fresh paths toward professional fulfillment, and unprecedented opportunities for curious, ambitious individuals to combine the things they love with their careers. Drawing on the stories of average people doing exactly this--an accountant overturning his industry, a sweatshop-owner's daughter fighting for better working conditions, an Amish craftsman meeting the technological needs of Amish farmers--as well as the latest academic research, Davidson shows us how the twentieth-century economy of scale has given way in this century to an economy of passion. He makes clear, too, that though the adjustment has brought measures of dislocation, confusion, and even panic, these are most often the result of a lack of understanding. In The Passion Economy, he delineates the ground rules of the new economy, and armed with these, we begin to see how we can succeed in it according to its own terms--intimacy, insight, attention, automation, and, of course, passion. An indispensable roadmap and a refreshingly optimistic take on our economic future"-- Provided by publisher
Women, Sustainable Entrepreneurship and the Economy: a Global Perspective edited by Kıymet Tunca Çalıyurt and Liliane Segura
"When a woman decides to become an "entrepreneur," she starts her business with a sense of excitement, freedom, wealth, happiness, prestige; however, these feelings can soon turn to fears over debt, difficulties, unpaid invoices, stress, and uncertainty. Being an entrepreneur means taking risks, making decisions, adapting management styles in line with developmental needs, clashing with rivals, being more agile than competitors, negotiating risky scenarios, following business trends, capturing new opportunities before and being better than the competition. If a woman wants to be successful as an entrepreneur, she needs to have a business education, undergoes continued professional development and has patience and emotional intelligence. Supporting women in their entrepreneurial activities have been shown to positively affect the economy, which is why governments pay special attention to opening new funding opportunities and training programs for women who want to start or develop a business. Female entrepreneurship has individual characteristics because of those aspects of the business which are affected by cultural, technological, legislative, social and historical developments. This book discusses the relationship between female entrepreneurship and the economy and academic authors from developing countries such as Brazil, Turkey, Albania, Kosovo, Portugal and Malaysia analyze the developments encompassing women and entrepreneurship in their respective countries. The authors discuss the regulatory frameworks of each country to show how these either help or hinder female entrepreneurship and consequently, the place of women in the economy. Women and entrepreneurship is an emerging theme, and this book is a must-read for researchers from both developing and developed countries"-- Provided by publisher
The Humachine: Humankind, Machines, and the Future of Enterprise by Nada R. Sanders and John D. Wood
"What started as an inquiry into how executives can adopt AI to harness the best of human and machine capabilities turned into a much more profound rumination on the future of humanity and enterprise. This is a wake up call for business leaders across all sectors of the economy. Not only should you implement AI regardless of your industry, but once you do, you should fight to stay true to your purpose, your ethical convictions, indeed your humanity, even as our organizations continue to evolve. While not holding any punches about the dangers posed by AI, this book uniquely surveys where technology is limited, and where the true opportunities lie amidst all the disruptive change currently underway. As such, it is distinctively more optimistic than many of the competing titles on Big Technology. This is a compelling book that weaves together philosophical, psychological, and legal insights; organizational governance, operations, and strategy; and technological breakthroughs and limitations. The authors set out to identify where humans and machines can best complement one another to create an enterprise greater than the sum total of its parts: the Humachine. Combining the business and predictive acumen of Professor Nada R. Sanders, PhD (Distinguished Professor at Northeastern University) with the legal and philosophical perspective of John D. Wood, Esq. (Attorney and Member of the New York State Bar) the authors combine their strengths as internationally recognized experts in forecasting and sustainable business to bring us this profound yet accessible book. This is a "must read" for everyone interested in the future of human enterprise"-- Provided by publisher

Quote
Pain is not tragic. Pain is magic. Suffering is tragic. Suffering is what happens when we avoid pain and consequently miss our becoming. That is what I can and must avoid: missing my own evolution because I am too afraid to surrender to the process. Having such little faith in myself that I numb or hide or consume my way out of my fiery feelings again and again. So my goal is to stop abandoning myself—and stay. To trust that I’m strong enough to handle the pain that is necessary to the process of becoming. Because what scares me a hell of a lot more than pain is living my entire life and missing my becoming. What scares me more than feeling it all is missing it all.

IDK if this will be helpful or not, but some unsolicited book recommnedations re: dating/singleness? It's Note You: 27 (Wrong) Reasons You're Single by Sara Eckle (good for when you're down in the dumps) The Anxious Girls Guide to Dating by Hattie C. Cooper (good for when you feel like the only person in the world who doesn't have the magic formula to dating) and All the Single Ladies by Rebecca Traister (w/ a grain of salt in that a- very americentric and b- oddly pro hook-up culture).
you know i’m really grateful for this, thanks! traister has been on my list for a while but the practical stuff looks like it might be really useful too. thank you so much for taking the thought and time to send these!
to be honest, over the past couple of years i have done a lot of Thinking about singleness in political, emotional, religious and personal terms, and right now i am done with Thinking and i’m just feeling, and i’m feeling sad and needy. but in good time i may want to do some reading. thank you.
