a/n: I had this written a couple of days ago, but Tumblr just "ate" the only file I had and I lost everything. I was so mad I didn't even want to write anymore, but damn, This is too good a HC to waste, so okay, let's try again (remembering to save periodically this time 🫡

LEWIS HAMILTON:

You and Lewis had created a reading list to complete throughout the year, you bet there were about a hundred books on the list, titles ranging from classic literature, biographies, poems, and contemporary literature. Books that you and Lewis wanted to read together or the books you thought the other should read.

So it was common for the two of you to spend the pilot's day off reading in bed while listening to blues or jazz on the speakers. You read together, wrote reviews of the books you read and discussed them.

He was reading Percy Jackson and the Mark of Athena and you were reading Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.

"So? What did you think?" He asked, marking the page he was on, Lewis had just started the last chapter and you had already finished reading.

"He does go through a metamorphosis and it's extremely unpleasant to imagine, but I've read more unpleasant books," you confessed, putting the book on the bedside table. "Four stars, and you?"

He snorted "Piper is so boring, damn she only knows how to think about Jason and how she doesn't like being the daughter of Aphrodite, so boring"

"God, yes! I don't like her either... Anyway, I'll wait for you to finish, and then we can choose the next one."

"Sure, honey," he kissed her temple and returned to reading just as Etta James began to sing "At Last." You settled into it, petting Roscoe as he lay beside you. This is the best way to enjoy your day off.

CARLOS SAINZ:

Carlos was at a stage where he wanted you to learn golf to play with him, after all the sport was a tradition for him and the Spaniard wanted you to be part of it, but you were terrible. You were really bad at golf, but that didn't make he want to teach you any less.

And well, you didn't like golf either, you didn't understand the sport, the scoring was weird, there were at least half a dozen different clubs and you couldn't even cheer.

But at least the clothes were cute and the cars were cool.

"Let's go, amor, I'll teach you," he said, going to pick you up in the golf cart. Lando, who was accompanying them this time, leaned his body on the golf club, waiting.

"Carlos, I'm terrible at this, you know," you grumbled, taking the bat he offered you. Carlos was a persevering man, you had to admit. He stood behind you, teaching you again how to perform the shot, instructing you to separate your legs and take a deep breath.

"I bet you five bucks she'll throw the ball in the lake"

"Shut up, Lando," you both said.

You followed his instructions and hit the ball...

...that fell into the lake.

"I knew"

"Shut up, Lando"

CHARLES LECLERC:

A day off for Charles meant you would get to visit his favorite spots, from a famous restaurant to a little coffee shop tucked away in a city alley. Sometimes he would take you to the south of France to see some chateau, other times he would just rent a chalet for you to be together in privacy, and you had lost count of how many times they had gone to Italy to see the vineyards and villas on the border with Monaco.

This time, you were preparing for a slightly longer itinerary, you had suggested visiting the Grace Kelly exhibit before heading to the cottage he had rented for the weekend.

"Got everything you need, mon cher?" He asked, wrapping his arms around her waist in a sweet hug.

"It depends, I know we're going to see the Grace Kelly exhibit, but I have no idea where we're going after, you say a cottage and I don't know whether to bring a bikini or coats" you mumbled, looking at her handbag.

"Take both just in case, you know spring can have unpredictable weather"

"Are you saying that so you don't give me a hint about where we're going?" You turned in his arms, facing the pilot. "That's not fair."

"You'll like it, mon ange, I promise"

"At least tell me if it's still in Monaco..." You tried to persuade him, sliding your nails lovingly along his chin, making the Monegasque shiver and let out a heavy breath.

"You're not taking me to the siren song, pretty girl." He gave you a quick kiss and a light slap on your ass before leaving. "We'll leave in fifteen minutes."

LANDO NORRIS:

Lando's downtime with you was spent playing games, you thought it was counterproductive to fuel his competitiveness when he should have been resting, but this routine of games with you made him much calmer and more relaxed when he returned to work. Ironic? Yes, but it worked.

You two played anything, Monopoly, Naval Battle, Game of Life, Detective, W.A.R, Uno, even checkers or cards. Any game was fair game.

The problem is that you got really competitive, your friends even gave up trying to play with you because the game turned into a battlefield.

"You lowlife cheater, did you really throw a +4 at your fiancée?!" You yelled at him, Lando laughed and blew you a kiss before dodging the pillow you threw at him.

"You know how things work, honey. Just because I love you doesn't mean I'm going to let you beat me."

"This will come back!" You bought the four cards he forced you to. "I really hate you."

"And you are the love of my life"

"Die, you jerk," you snapped and he laughed.

Lando could feel all the tension leaving his shoulders, playing with you always made him relax, no matter how aggressive and passionate you became in the game.

OSCAR PIASTRI:

Considering that Oscar was always traveling and there were few really usable pages in his schedule, any time the two of you could have together should be taken full advantage of, and For both of them, there's nothing better than an afternoon of movies.

You two had created a list of movies on Letterboxd and the chosen one of the day would be Interstellar.

Oscar was making popcorn while you were arranging the blankets and pillows on the couch, so what if it was the height of summer in Australia? There in the apartment, the air conditioning was hovering below fifteen degrees, keeping the room at a favorable climate for you and your boyfriend to cuddle while watching astronauts lost in space.

"I thought you were going to choose Anatomy of a Fall," he muttered, placing the food on the coffee table, popcorn with cheese, assorted snacks, chocolates and ice cream and of course, lemon soda.

"I was dubious, but you know I love any movie that has Matthew McConaughey in it," you said, getting under the covers, accompanied by Oscar, "and of course, The movie's soundtrack is perfect, I use it to study..."

"Have you watched it?"

"No, I was waiting for you, but I discovered the playlist... I'll send you the link, you'll love it"

He hummed in agreement and you pressed play on the movie, Many times you paused the film to comment on something or express your theories. It made the movie session better, Oscar didn't mind listening to you talk about it and you loved his theories.

It was, without a doubt, the best way to enjoy the break.

MAX VERSTAPPEN:

He would rather be playing, sleeping or, I don't know, watering the plants, but you always dragged him to a skin care session. You spread different creams on his face, plucked some extra hairs from his eyebrows, trimmed his beard.

As much as he denied it, Max learned to enjoy it, being taken care of by you was one of his guilty pleasures. And it all got better when you started gossiping without any trace of shame. He talked about what went on behind the scenes in F1 and you shared news about work and your condominium.

"I'm still sad that Logan was let go, he had a lot of future," you said, sliding the massage stone across his face, spreading the serum into his skin.

"He's a good kid, unfortunately he wasn't ready for Formula One yet, he came in too early and couldn't adapt well... I hope he can find his place" he grumbled, sighing at the gentle massage on his cheekbones.

"Yes... Williams was very ungrateful to him and I won't elaborate on that" you said a little bitterly and Max laughed, you always positioned yourself as a defender of the poor and oppressed.

"Yes... I won't elaborate on that either... It's better"

You both were silent until you clicked your tongue.

"Uh, I almost forgot to tell you, last week there was a horrible fight at the condominium meeting.

He opened his curious eyes "You can tell me everything, dear"

"The neighbor at 1165 caught her husband with the building manager and the building manager's husband in her bed"

"What the fuck?! Are you kidding?!"

You laughed, putting away the massage stone and sliding your fingers firmly over Max's face "you had to see it, she put together a PowerPoint with photos and screenshots of the conversations"

Max laughed out loud "damn, I wish I had seen..."

"It was a real fight, they argued and everything, it was really fun to watch"

Jungkook woke up around 9:30 am. The first thing he did was check his phone in case he had any notifications from Y/n, but had none. He was seriously getting worried about this lack of response. Had something happened with the person Y/n left with? If that was the case he would never be able to forgive himself. He knew he should have gone after her, he's so stupid. 

He got up, took a quick shower, got dressed, grabbed his keys and left, he couldn’t keep up with this uneasy feeling. Putting his helmet on, he drove to the coffee shop Y/n worked. He knew her shifts very well, and that was the only place he could find her. When he got there, he parked his bike, took a deep breath and got in looking everywhere for her but still no Y/n in sight. 

“Hey there moto boy. What can I get you?” Sana asked. Jungkook looked kinda confused. “I was actually looking for Y/n. Is she on her break?” Sana frowned and looked at him suspiciously. 

“You’re kidding right?” Sana exclamed. “You are always together and talk to each otherall the time when you aren’t. You can’t tell me you didn’t know she took some days off” 

The world fell at Jungkook's feet upon hearing that. Y/n took a few days off and didn't even answered to his texts or deign to call? what the fuck was going on. Jungkook nodded his head, said thank you and left, picking his phone up instantly to call Y/n. “The person you called is not available. Please try again later”

Y/n fell in love with that place as soon as she saw it. Everywhere she looked she she felt immense peace and everything seemed so quiet and cozy, everything to make the weight on her shoulders disappear. Upon entering the chalet, they were immediately greeted by a gentleman at the entrance who directed them to the reception.

After checking in and receive the keys, they picked up their luggage and followed the gentlemanto the elevator, who was showing them the way to their "apartment”. Y/n couldn’t believe what her eyes were seeing. Walking in, she’s faced with a very nice living room, with wooden walls and gray furniture. It had shelves with books, among other really cute stuff decorating the place. All very neutral and very light, exactly what she needed. On the coffee table was champagne and a plate with strawberries and chocolate with a small note saying "we hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoy your presence. Thanks for choosing us. Have fun" 

From the living room they went to the bedroom to organize their things. When they walked in Y/n was even more astonished. From their bed they had a view of the outside. She always loved snow and being there was filling her heart with so much happiness she wished she could live there forever.

“Where did you find this place and how can you afford it for both of us?!” Y/n exclaimed. Lisa looked at her with a funny look “My dad owns it. A benefit of traveling so much and not seeing his family for so long, not everything can be bad. I used to come here for Christmast and New year. It's crazy during those days and you know me, I love crazy and those were my favourite moments here”

Y/n laughed. Only Lisa could say something like that. 

“So… You know how to ski right?” Lisa asked out of nowhere. “Oh hell no Lisa, no way, not right now, we just got here we should—” Y/n argued back but was soon interrupted by Lisa 

“There's a snow suit in the closet on the right. We have a lot to discover we won't wait until tomorrow. You rest during the night. Come on princess, time is money” Y/n huffed while getting her suit to start putting it on.  How could Lisa have so much energy was something she couldn't understand.

They both got dressed and head out of the chalet. Y/n was amazed by the view, everything was perfect. But it’s not an adventure if something doesn't go right for Y/n. Out of nowhere she lost sight of Lisa, making her panick. She had no idea where she was.

Y/n looked around trying to see her friend but couldn’t identify anyone who would look like her. She started walking around worried about straying too far from where Lisa last saw her. Y/n was so distracted that she didn't even notice anyone coming close to her, ending up colliding with that person, causing her to lose balance and fall. The other person quickly knelt down, stretching out his hand to help her until she heard “Y/n?” 

She looked up, took the stranger's hand and straightened her hair a little, trying to understand where she recognized that voice from, until the stranger took the protective mask off his eyes and saw him.

“Taehyung?”

General housekeeping before I proceed with the Roast Fest

I want to make this explicitly clear: it is not my intention to hate on the artists themselves nor their art skills or anything along those lines.

Betsy Cola and Davi Go are both extremely talented and skilled artists. Support their work. Art is fucking hard and its even harder to actually get paid for it.

Betsy Cola is a queer Filipina and has an Instagram Page (but no online shop for prints). Lots of fun retro style (think 50s-60s-70s Pop Art)

Davi Go does have an INPRNT with lots of Marvel and DC Characters. Like nine different Emma Frost prints alone. A couple of lovely Laura Kinney and much more. For fine Art Prints, artists earn like 50% of the sale, I'm pretty sure.

I personally have no idea what goes into getting contracted to do any cover by Marvel, but I'm sure it was absolutely thrilling to get to do ANY work by a big company such as Marvel, where so many would get to see something I had made. I also have no idea how much an artist is told when they are contracted to make something. (Do they get told what it's for, or are they just given a generalized prompt? I truly have no idea)

I do know, that personally for me, doing ANYTHING of that caliber would be a dream come true. I've been reading comic books since I was five/six years old. While I only make shitty little fans arts and the occasional fanfic, if by some astronomical chance, I was offered to write or do a cover, I would absolutely jump on the chance. Or at least strongly consider it.

I am specifically critiquing Marvel's decisions as corporation to even come up with and sign off on something as obnoxious (and frankly, insulting) as "Pride Allies" for a variant series. Especially considering the overarching fact that historically Marvel has had its fair share of issues regarding its treatment of its queer characters -- lack of consistent appearances/storytelling, questionable treatment/writing choices, and blatant rainbow washing during Pride month to give a few generalizations (pick your favorite example, there's a lot). Sometimes its enjoyable to poke fun at company's ridiculous marketing ideas.

Much like the fact last winter they did a "Ski Chalet" variant series with skiing and snow activities, yet somehow didn't find an artist to do a variant of their ONE CANON OLYMPIC SKIIER.

But I digress.

In Summary: the act of creation is beautiful, don't be a douche canoe. Being punk is anti-establishment, not anti-people.

An estimate of how many physical books I own: Me, staring at my bookcases and doing an estimate per shelf x number of shelves... maybe 500? (and if you include ebooks, then there are 304 books in my to read folder and 339 in my read and keep folder). AND I did a big clear out before I moved last year. And took four bags to the charity book shop earlier this year. I cycle a lot of second hand books in and out tbh.

Favorite author: There are loads of favourite books and I could pretty much go on about most of the books on my shelves, but I think I could continue to lose myself in Lois McMaster Bujold's books over and over and over again. I know that Georgette Heyer books are very much Of Their Time but it is also true that if I ever need a comfort read then I know what to reach for.

A popular book I've never read and never intend to read: Godddddddddd. Liza said Infinite Jest and I also have zero intention of ever reading this. But SO MANY.

A popular book I thought was just meh: Red, White, and Royal Blue. I did not get along with Wolf Hall, but I also didn't get that far into it before giving in.

Longest book I own: Toss up between the Neal Stephenson Baroque Cycle volumes, War and Peace, Samantha Shannon's The Priory of the Orange Tree (although I've lent this out and probably won't get it back), and Victoria Goddard's Hands of the Emperor / At The Feet of the Sun. They're all pretty chunky, without doing any specific investigation.

Longest series I own all the books to: Elinor M. Brent-Dyer's Chalet School series (approx 62 books, depending on which editions you own). After that, Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series.

Prettiest book I own: I don't own any where the cover is the prettiest thing I've ever seen, but I do own a queer historical photography book where together the inside and out is the prettiest visual history. Some of my books are v pretty because of the way they make me feel, but that's a different question.

A book or series I wish more people knew about: Maybe Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard? There's a core few of us that feel a lot about it. One of my very oldest internet friends that I haven't seen in years sent me a package earlier in the year that was just a notebook that had reminded her of this book and therefore it was a necessity to share it with me (she was right to do this). I also kind of want more people to talk to about Joan Aiken's Black Hearts in Battersea series.

Book I’m reading now: I'm listening to Jingo by Terry Pratchett, have just picked up the second Sandman volume, and I'm partway through Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield (although I realised last night that it was too creepy for me to read in bed, lollllllll)

Book that’s been on my TBR list for a while but I still haven’t gotten around to it: BRB just going to stare into an invisible camera, my goodreads to read pile is 462 books long and is only made up of stuff that I own / once owned and is probably not up to date with paperbacks. Let's say The Simarillion, because I've probably intended to read that since I was a kid (and have not yet managed it). I've read 133 books so far this year and yet my to read pile never gets any fucking smaller.

Do you have any books in a language other than English: Nope. I used to own some HP books in German and Latin but I did not keep them. I am not very good at languages, although me and the Duolingo owl are trapped in a daily standoff.

Paperback, hardcover or ebook?: Mixture of all three. Love a good paperback but I am... gently allergic to paper, so sometimes if I've read too many paper books my hands pay the price, and on the whole I do believe that skin should stay on my body, where I've put it, rather than peel off and bleed. A healthy mix of ebook and paperbook in general, with the odd hardback.

McCoy

Scotty had an odd look in his eye and Robbie looked flushed when the brothers finally joined everyone for tea.

“Robbie alright?” McCoy asked quietly when Scotty sat down beside him.

Scotty looked at McCoy sharply, before his features relaxed, and he nodded. McCoy’s curiosity only grew.

“There are some lovely shops!” Eleanor said to Francine. “We’ll go down tomorrow after breakfast. Who else is coming?” The queen looked around the room.

“Shopping?” David made a face. “No thanks.”

“Oh boo,” Eleanor smiled and waved a dismissive hand at him and Francine laughed.

“I’ll come,” Granddad said. “I’d like to see this little mountain village.”

“What about you children?” Eleanor looked at the young people. “And you Phil?”

Dr. Boyce sipped his tea. “I think I’d like to just stay in and read. Just relax and do nothing for a while.”

Eleanor nodded at him, then looked at McCoy before looking at Leah.

“We’ll come too,” McCoy answered after a quick glance at Scotty then Leah.

“If they’re going to gossip it might as well be about all of us,” Leah said with a sigh.

A comm chirped before anyone could say more. All eyes turned to Dr. Boyce as he held out a hand towards the king.

“You are on vacation,” he said firmly. “Whatever it is, it can wait.”

With a guilty look, David slid the comm from his pocket and handed it over. Dr. Boyce glanced at who the message was from before turning the device off.

“Thank you Phil,” David chuckled.

“I know how hard it is to get away,” Dr. Boyce said. “But enjoy this.” He gestured at the gathered family in the room.

“You’re right, I know. I will. I’ll even go shopping tomorrow.” He smiled at Eleanor, who reached over and squeezed his hand.

“I knew you would,” she teased.

McCoy pulled his jacket tight, and tugged his hat lower on his ears. He and Scotty had decided to take a walk up to the lookout after tea. He looked over at Scotty with his bare head. McCoy had offered him a hat, but Scotty had turned it down.

Snow fell slowly around them as they walked. McCoy’s mind wandered to Robbie’s flushed look when he had entered the living room.

“Robbie was sort of red earlier, you sure he was alright?”

Scotty sighed quietly. “Aye, he is. Just- well, I shouldn’t say. It’s the lad’s secret after all.”

“Oh. Ok. Forget I asked then,” McCoy smiled. He was still full of curiosity, but if it was a secret then McCoy wouldn’t push.

“I would tell ye love, if I could.” Scotty squeezed McCoy’s hand.

“I know,” the prince said with a squeeze back. “Don’t worry about it.”

They walked quietly for a few minutes.

“Really,” McCoy broke the silence. “You should be more worried about when I’m going to get you back for that snowball attack last winter.” He grinned at his husband.

Scotty laughed. “I’d like to see ye try to sneak up on me!”

“You wait,” McCoy threatened with a laugh as they reached the turnoff for the overlook. He led the way and pushed some overgrown branches to the side.

“You’ve got snow in your hair,” McCoy said as they stood with their arms around each other, looking down the mountain towards the chalet below them.

“Aye,” Scotty agreed. “And I can feel ye shivering even in your jacket. Let’s get back and get warmed up.”

Robbie

Robbie still wasn't sure what to make of the fact that his brother had found out about his secret, but in the end he was glad that it was Scotty and no one else.

His brother and he had always been two peas in a pod. They had supported each other and always kept their secrets. And if anyone would support Robbie in his plans, it would be Scotty.

They had hidden the ring in Scotty and Leonard's room. The older Scott brother had taken a bag of technical journals and books with him, which was stowed in his half of the closet, and they had placed the casket under these very books. Scotty had assured his little brother that Leonard would definitely not search the bag, as he wasn't the least bit interested in technology, and Robbie really hoped that he was right.

"Are you all right, darling?"

A hand ran gently through Robbie's hair and he looked up at Leah. The two of them had gone to bed after tea time together and put on a movie to relax a wee bit. But Leah obviously noticed that Robbie's mind was somewhere else entirely. She simply knew him too well.

"A-aye, everything's fine," the Scotsman stammered and his girlfriend giggled softly.

"Hmmm, I'm not sure if you're really telling the truth right now, but if you're keeping a secret from me, then you must have a good reason, right?" Curious, Leah tilted her head to the side and Robbie sighed.

"Everything's fine. Really, mo chridhe. That's the truth. But... there's also something I cannae tell ye. At least not yet."

Robbie had it all mapped out in detail. On Christmas morning, before Leah would even wake up, he wanted to be kneeling by her side of the bed, the ring in his hand. And when she opened her eyes, he wanted to be the first thing she saw. Something he wished for every day. To be by Leah's side. Forever.

"Do I have to worry?"

Quickly, Robbie shook his head.

"Nae. It's nothing bad." It wasn't long before Robbie blushed heavily. "A-a-at least... I hope it's nothing bad in yer eyes."

What if Leah thought they were still too young? What if she didn't want to marry Robbie? What if she wasn't ready for such a big step?

"Oh Robbie," Leah giggled. "You're so cute when you blush." The princess gave her boyfriend a kiss before lovingly running her finger along his cheekbone. "I trust you, sweetie. If you say it's nothing bad, then it's nothing bad. And... even though I'm overly curious, I'll wait."

Robbie let out a relieved sigh. For a moment he had feared that Leah would harp on about the subject and that he would spill it out eventually.

"Thanks, Leah. I appreciate it. A lot."

They shared another kiss, before Leah glanced at the screen where the movie was still running.

"Now, do you still want to watch that movie or do something else? I doubt that you even have any idea what the movie is about, seeing how distracted you were the whole time?"

Robbie couldn't help but chuckle softly at that question.

"I suppose ye're right about that. Something else... Hmm, let me think. Do ye have... anything on yer mind?"

A sly grin slid across Leah's face and the next kiss that followed was way longer and passionate than the ones before. The crown princess apparently knew exactly what she wanted to do.

Oh it's a good day! I was checking the second hand market for some of my missing EBDs and not only did I spot a copy of Heather Leaves School, meaning that I now have a complete set of La Rochelles, the same seller also had a Chalet School I don't own in a GGB edition, meaning that I am now down to 9 remaining missing titles out of 60, and I have alternate editions for 3 of them anyway.

Three Sentence Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to the Christie family, their shop The Book Chalet, and their beloved pet Agatha C. (as in "Cat") Christie. The mysteries in this story weren't too predictable, with a few moments that managed to surprise me. I look forward to the next installment in the series!

what's on the 10k shopping spree wishlist bestie

Without further ado (and with apologies for my general slowness): The Obnoxious Shopping List.

(The general premise is that I want to actually shop, in person, so the list is more ideas of the types of things I want vs actually what I'm going to buy).

Gucci loafers or slippers (exact model tbc but currently leaning towards these): I've wanted them forever but resisted the impulse because I am very tough on shoes. But if you can't buy them during the Stupid Shop, when can you?

A walking around town bag: really not sure on this, very open to suggestions. Needs to be big enough to hold a book, but I don't want it to be huge (or covered in logos). I'm interested in a Gucci Diana but not sold (I swear I'm not really a Gucci fan girl despite what this list suggests so far) and also love this guy, even though he's wildly impractical and a bit trendy.

A fun evening bag, because I really don't have one. Maybe a YSL Kate although I did just find this guy who's speaking to me. Alternatively, if I find a really beautiful walking around town bag and want to keep it cheaper on the clutch, maybe something like this or this, we'll see what I find.

A Toteme scarf, or maybe two. Trying to find them in person today to help me decide.

A beautiful thin belt, probably black. Maybe a Triomphe. Also a gold metal belt.

A cashmere hoodie (light grey or maybe tan).

Fun sunglasses, something kooky and oversized, ideally in a funky color. Think like this or this, though obviously this will be one I'll have to actually put on my face.

Two new bathing suits, at least one that's a bikini - your girl is going to Bermuda for 5 months and I anticipate a lot of laying around by the beach in my future.

A woven beach bag.

An outrageously beautiful Christmas/ski sweater - think rich lady in a ski chalet, think Christmas morning, think like this style but with a cuter pattern. I'm thinking I'll probably need to go to Ralph Lauren in person to find this.

I also love love love this bag (in suede) but it is ridiculously impractical, maybe even too impractical for me.

Some silk PJs, maybe these.

Probably a new tennis racquet.

A really good blazer, ideally two actually. I want them slouchy, oversized, one in black and one in cream. This is what I'm thinking for the black one, cream tbc.

I suspect this will be impossible to find but this sweater haunts me.

And that's what I've got so far! I definitely want to save room (and budget) for looking around and shopping in person.

Day Eleven: Winter Wonderland <-AO3!

Ray’s most memorable Christmas as a child is the one where he got his first camera. It was a second hand Nikon that his abuela had gotten from a pawn shop, his parents supplying the film and developing supplies. He uses most of the film that day, turning their little powder room into a dark room, and gifts his abuela the photo he snapped of her looking like a grand lady overlooking her family as they tore open presents. She loves it and has it framed on her wall for the rest of her life. Ray has it on his own walls to this day.

Rose Alvarez would always say her favourite Christmas memory is the first one she saw snow. She was freshly fifteen and her family was on a vacation up in the Rocky Mountains. Victoria complained about being cold the whole time, but Rose loved it. She twirled in the falling flakes, catching them on her tongue, wobbling on skates across the frozen pond, and attempting a poor snowman. She resolved then and there to live somewhere that it snowed when she was old enough.

Rose and Ray met at UCLA, falling in love early on, and were married within the year. They stayed in California however, as it was better for their careers. But once Rose confessed her wish for snow, Ray whisked her away to a mountainside cabin for their first holiday season together, and the next year they honeymooned in Switzerland.

From there on out, it becomes a tradition. Every year around Christmas, they pack up and go somewhere cold, somewhere there’s snow. One year they end up in Quebec, and meet a nice couple from New Brunswick, the Patterson’s, and become fast friends.

The next year, however, Rose is far too pregnant to travel, so Ray rents every bit of fake snow and snow makers from his friends in the film industry as he can, making their yard into a winter wonderland. Rose laughs as she twirls in the flakes, letting them catch in her curls, and grins ear to ear as her baby starts kicking up a storm. “Guess they’ll love winter just as much as I do,” she comments.

“Perfect,” Ray replies.

The next year Emily and Mitch have moved to LA, and the four-well six now, of them get a little chalet up north, giggling as Luke who has just learned to walk toddles along in his puffy suit while Julie crawls behind him.

They can’t go somewhere snowy every year of course. Jobs and finances and life get in the way. But they try, and the kids love it. Carlos takes to sledding like nothing else, and everyone ignores how pink-faced Julie is from ‘skating’ with Luke once they hit their teens.

But then Rose gets sick.

Ray is about to cancel their winter plans, but Rose stills his hand. She’s thin, pale, and weak. But no less vibrant, no less spirited. “If I am not going to make it to another winter, I wanna see snow one last time,” she demands.

Ray almost breaks down in tears at that, not ready to face the reality that he may lose his wife, that he might never get to see her twirl in the falling snow again. So he relents, books the cabin, Invites the Patterson’s, and all of Julie’s bandmates.

Rose spends most of her time inside, smothered in blankets, but everyone can see the delight in her eyes as she watches all the young people frolic in the snow. Smirks at Ray when they catch a certain couple under the mistletoe, but assures Julie she’s happy for her. Makes her promise to keep living, keep loving, no matter what.

On the last day, there’s snow gently falling, but Rose is finding it hard to move, her energy sapped. So Ray scoops her up in his arms, pulls a woolly hat over her bald head, and brings her out, twirling the two of them in the snow. Lets Rose catch those few flakes on her tongue, and feel them melt against his own eyelashes. And even though she’s all but skin and bones, dark circles and gaunt cheeks, to him, the smile on Rose’s face makes her the most beautiful woman in the world. He kisses her sweetly, making it count, making it last, just in case…

The next year, the kids are all off skiing in Vail with the Wilsons. Emily and Mitch are staying home, as Emily has a touch of a cold. Ray looks out the window of the chalet, feeling the stillness and emptiness around him. But the snow is starting to fall, so he goes outside, twirling in the flakes, then stops and holds out a hand.

Rose grins as she takes it, and twirls them again, whooping and beaming as the snow dances around them both.
