World War I veterans seeking early payment of a promised service bonus gather on the grounds of the Washington Monument June 2, 1932.

Upwards of 17,000 veterans and another 28,000 family members and supporters descended on Washington, D.C. and camped in a number of different locations around the city, including vacant buildings. The largest and most famous was on Anacostia flats.

Note that black and white veterans are mixing freely on the Monument grounds in contrast a nearby segregated beach on the Tidal Basin.

Steve knows it doesn’t have to be perfect, okay? He knows.

Except… it also kind of does.

Here’s how it goes. Last year, Eddie was stuck in a hospital, handcuffed to the bed, because he was wrongly accused of murder after almost being eaten by interdimensional monsters.

Steve has decided, as one of Eddie’s best friends—and the secret love of his life, not that Eddie needs to know about his feelings—that this year would be perfect.

The cake looks fantastic. The music has been left in Robin’s more-than-capable hands. The presents are all wrapped and sitting in a neat little pile on the kitchen table, behind the cake. Wayne’s just helped Steve finish his chili, the one thing Eddie asked for.

“If I can have anything this year,” he’d said quietly, looking off into the distance, “I think I don’t really want much. All my friends, obviously, but all I really want besides that is Wayne’s chili.”

“There’s no fuckin’ way,” he whispered later, ghosting his fingers over the wrapping paper of the largest present. “If this is what I think it is-”

Steve grinned as he finally tore into it, gasping when he’s holding a brand-new guitar, the same kind as the one lost to the Upside Down.

“You’ll have to give me an encore soon,” Steve murmurs later, after everyone else is gone, nodding at the guitar, before smiling nervously. “It’s not over yet. I have something for you that I keep chickening out of giving to you.”

Eddie frowns and tilts his head, listening. “What’s that?”

Steve ducks his head, barely dares eye contact when he says, “A kiss?”

Eddie grins, wider than Steve’s seen all day. “Well, what’re you waiting for? I want my birthday present!”

HoO is so funny to me when you actually think about the ages of all the characters. Octavian is 18. Percy and Annabeth are 16, almost 17. Reyna is presumably 16. Frank just turned 16, Jason’s about to turn 16. Leo and Piper are like 15. Hazel’s like 14 and a half, and Nico is 13.

The Death Sibs are both the youngest and oldest on the Argo II. Octavian is a college freshman getting into petty drama with a bunch of high schoolers. He gets told to shut up at one point by a random 8th grader. Everyone is scared of the 8th grader. We Sent A 13 Year Old To Superhell and he came back weirder, Just Like Middle School. TLH was just three high school sophomores being sent to do a task and it going Exactly Like You’d Expect. Percy’s the only demigod on the ship who can legally drive (though Reyna gets her drivers license at some point before TOA). What Is Happening.

lovenott headcanons because they’ve been stuck in my head recently

- when they first started talking, they bonded over being able to see thestrals, but they had differing opinions on them. luna was fond of them but theodore disliked them, mostly because he hated watching them eat

- they are the weird arts kid x weird science kid duo and they support each other’s strange creations

- theodore doesn’t get why luna is content with being the only one to believe in the creatures she talks about, but he stopped trying to find ways to prove their existence because it made her upset

- overdressed gf x underdressed bf except it’s theodore in monochrome and luna in the full rainbow

- luna is one of the few people to believe in theodore’s conspiracies about the capabilities of time magic being hidden by the government, and he in turn trusts her about the wrackspurts. if thestrals are invisible until one sees death, it stands to reason that there are other invisible creatures too

- theodore reads the quibbler extensively and may possibly be drafting a request letter to xenophilous to get an article about the time magic cover up

- luna likes making her own jewelry and will sometimes make some for theodore too so they can match

- they both lack social skills in different ways and somehow this has made them click. two sides of the same coin two different poles of the magnet type relationship, grouped together and yet distinctly different

- they both plan on keeping their last names if they ever get married

- bug lover x insect lover. they both stare at caterpillars and get excited over beetles it’s just that theodore gets nerdy about it and luna treats them like she had a deep personal relationship with each individual bug. she tries to find them nice sticks and leaves to eat. they are both firmly in the camp of put bugs outside instead of killing them if they have to be removed at all

- luna made theodore open his mind to divination. she’s invested in most of it but has a less common view that prophecies arent set in stone. a lot of people assume that prophecies mean the future cannot be changed but she sees them moreso as possibilities and guidelines for what could happen and warnings to prepare for the best way through that future they describe. theo still hates it but he’s more accepting of its validity, luna’s theory makes more sense to him

- theodore gifts her flowers for her clothes and hair and luna incorporates them into her designs (she absolutely makes her own clothes or at least tweaks them). she insists that he also keeps a flower so they can match

- sci-fi & non-fiction lover x fantasy & historical fiction lover. they both read quite a bit but in varying genres

- theodore always runs cold and luna knits him colourful gloves in the winter

- they go on dates every few weeks or so but it took them telling people for the rest of the school to realise they were dating because it’s rarely in big public areas, moreso little shops and forest areas and things like that

- luna messes with his tie when they sit together and theo fidgets with her fingers when they hold hands

A photo of the actual blueprint and sticky notes made for this drawing, the concept for the cardboard dagger and the paper I used to brainstorm Sun and Moon's written conversation.

Random process tidbits:

The blueprint was drawn on actual construction paper leftover from when I was a little kid.

The dagger is based on the coins Brutus had minted to commemorate the event.

I made 5 oopsie sticky notes when writing out the back and forth notes between the duo, such as the very first one where I accidentally used blue to write out all of Sun's message.

Sun writes in cursive as a nod to the animatronic's theater days. I imagine this dramatic bot was either programmed with or developed fancy handwriting for signing autographs.

I originally wanted to draw parts of the digital drawing in different styles to make this even more collage-like.

The High Harper wasn’t flirting either. Sources all said she was the frigid type, a real all-business kind of woman, aged by loss and almost all her life on the job, so that part hadn’t caught Idalia off guard too much. What she did notice was that the High Harper watched Thea like a hawk, not with the eyes of a seasoned professional, but in that way Thea watched a pretty girl. The eat-you-up sort of want. (In which Jaheira's investigations as High Harper bring her to a situation that is both politically absurd and emotionally complicated.)

Saying that a considerable part of the bonus seekers are not veterans and many are Communists and persons with criminal records, the Presi dent added: "The veterans amongst these numbers are no doubt unaware of the character of their companions and are being led into violence which Government can tolerate."

‘The Ides Of March’. How do I even begin to talk about this episode and specifically the scene of Gabrielle going batshit berserk in all the effort to save Xena's life? I mean how much love can you hold for a person that you would give up absolutely everything to see that they make it out alive just to be faced with the fate that they won’t and you’re absolutely fine with it and calmer than stone? And when I say everything - I mean EVERYTHING. Gabrielle gives up everything:

A home

A career

A family

A daughter

A queenhood

A philosophy

A sense of self

A blood innocence

Not to mention... her very own life.

Imagine the love and loyalty and dedication that you would have to put in to the relationship between you and them to do that. It’s almost unhealthy and abusive if not for the fact that the person wouldn’t let you do it anyway. But you just throw caution to the wind in love for them and die on the cross with them. Pure selfless unconditional love. It’s insanely romantic what Gabrielle does in this episode. This was such an astounding declaration of love at the highest possible calibre that I believe this is what ended the slow burn between them and they finally became an officially committed couple. Yes, at the point of their deaths because that is SO Xena and Gabrielle. That's how deep and intense their love story is. I honestly believe their love for each other was consummated at the moment of them dying together. I think it's the perfect moment. It's 100% when and where it happened because these crazy people do not declare their love in words. They declare it in action. They declare love by saving each other's lives.
