Put On Your Raincoats | Lustful Feelings (Horulu, 1977)

I learned that Lesllie Bovee passed away recently and decided to finally give this a look. I'd found her an enjoyable presence in the supporting roles I'd seen her in previously, but this is the first lead role of hers I've seen. While she doesn't give the most refined performance, she is good playing off of Jamie Gillis (as her drug dealing boyfriend who pushes her into sex work to pay his debts) during their more heated arguments, and in her more affectionate scenes with Eve Henderson as an erotic photographer and sex worker who befriends her.

She's certainly appealing as the lead, and provides someone to invest in in a movie that's otherwise quite the downer, with a climactic sex scene that starts off quite goofy (Bobby Astyr complaining about getting soft because another character is talking to much) to pretty ugly and violent, and a mood of noir fatalism hanging over the final moments as Gillis continues the cycle of exploitation with his neighbour Nancy Dare and finds he can't escape his fate. To be honest I was a little bothered by the troubling handling of race and the way it seemed to shift focus away from Dare in its final moments despite her being the heart of this movie.

But it's not an entirely dispiriting watch, as the early scenes of Bovee bonding with Henderson have real warmth. And aside from the violent coked up climax, I found most of the sex scenes quite enjoyable, particularly a lesbian turned femdom scene where Bovee and Henderson go to town on Robert Kerman after they catch him masturbating (Henderson has a stiff sense of movement I found oddly compelling; what she was doing I will let you find out for yourself), and a lesbian scene with ringers Terri Hall and Helen Madigan, two clients of Gillis who buy coke on credit. The movie's really good at capturing the attractive qualities of its stunningly beautiful female cast, often dressing them up in black lingerie and unfailingly capturing them from the most flattering angles possible. (I did however laugh at the scene where Bovee gets a Coke from the fridge while still in lingerie and with her tits out.)

And Kemal Horulu, whose work I plan to get into further, directs this with a good amount of style, bringing menace to the outdoor locations and using the busy decor, particularly all the strategically placed mirrors, to complement the sex scenes with a sense of decadence. The critic blurbs on the poster are not off base. The sex scenes here are quite sexy.
