Places Of Mind Development -

Calm In Chaos

First Blog Post : Concept

For this project, I wanted to create something that could only occur in my head—something unique, dreamy, and different; for the previous class activity (places of mind), I chose to create a chessboard made of the world, where the chess pieces lie around the globe. Higher begin playing with each other once a millennium (because the concept of time does not apply to them).

So I went on the internet and drove into research to find my inspiration for the project. While browsing, I remembered that during our classes on this topic, Niel showed us artwork by an artist named "Salvador Dali" for reference and understanding of the brief for the respected activity.

From there, I searched the internet regarding the artist and found out that the art style he follows is called "juxtaposition artwork." Putting two or more different objects next to each other is called juxtaposition. This automatically compares the objects by asking how they are different and similar and what the artist is trying to convey simply by putting the two together. To create a point of juxtaposition, the picture must contain at least two elements with a solid visual weight. The viewer looks at both of these simultaneously, coming to a conclusion about the purpose of each component.

After learning about this art form, I was eager to create something as close to it as possible, so I dug deep into it. I learned how it is used in the field of photography to differentiate between two separate objects or subjects. I also learned more about "Salvador Dali," including how he was able to create those paintings.

After reading about the artist and other art forms related to this topic, I remembered seeing an anime called "ID: invaded," which deals with what happens inside a person's mind. I went back and watched it again, finding references and inspiration in that anime.

After that, I came to a conclusion about the project's concept: to create a chaotic world in which everything is flying around, arranging and rearranging millions of times to form something, and even if the pieces don't fit, they all work well in harmony, like "calm in chaos."

Travels- February 2019

February found me back in Chicago for just 3 weeks. During this time I closed on the home that I had purchased back in July, 2017. As anyone who has every built a home from scratch will explain, new construction never goes as planned. 2 days after I was given the keys, I was back on a plane.

A party invite in Dallas led me to go back to Australia for a week. Have I mentioned how much I love…
