@heartofstanding tagged me in this meme months ago and unfortunately it took me this long to get to it because I had a mild crisis over how long it's been since I've read a novel, let alone one that I loved 😅 so this is nine of my favourite novels (not books, because if I included manga/short stories/comics/etc this would be giant)
Tumblr media
0The Picture of Dorian Gray -- Oscar Wilde// Pyrrhus-- Mark Merlis//The Scarecrow--Ronald Hugh Morrieson//Unnatural History--Kate Osman//Tunnels of Blood--Darren Shan//The Coffin Dancer--Jeffery Deaver//Hero--Perry Moore//Frankenstein--Mary Shelley//One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-- Ken Kasey
#TPODG I feel like is obvious. But a genuinely hilarious book that is also poignant and tragic and so /so/ compelling#The more work you put into it the more you get out of it and I get so sad every time I see people#not wanting to look deeper than what's beyond the surface#Pyrrhus gets the extremely high honour of Greek Myth Retelling That is Actually Good#it's less about the Trojan War and more about the journey there set in the 1980s gay scene#the cursed spot that gets Philoctetes abandoned is an effective allegory right until the moment it isn't an allegory at all#and you should see the gut punch coming but somehow you don't#The Scarecrow is my Token Kiwi Representation and it's also the one that got me into the genre I now write almost exclusively#reading it feels like watching a cheesy low budget slasher that accidentally says some really interesting things about sexism and misogyny#(I say accidentally because it is the 20s and my tutor very loudly hated this book for being sexist)#(and I both totally agree and disagree because Prue is the prototypical final girl and needs an adaptation that does her justice)#Also the story of this novel's publication is freaking hilarious and why I will only write under a pseudonym because I would be next#Unnatural History is an exact blueprint of what I love about sci-fi done well in the way we've only very recently started to see on screen#and I hate that the show of Doctor Who rarely if ever reaches this level#Tunnels of Blood is my favourite of the Darren Shan Saga but really is just a stand in for the entire series#yes it's a kids series but it's a kid series that got me into horror and surrealism#and delivers the most effective and heartbreaking plot twist that not even Hannibal pulled off as well#The Coffin Dancer is just some damn good crime fiction and I wish Jeffery Deaver wasn't so slept on#(yes I know The Bone Collector got an adaptation but The Bone Collector isn't even in the top ten of the Lincoln Rhyme series)#unfortunately Deaver's strongest point is his use of point of view#but he still manages to get the twist to be shocking (and Coffin Dancer is the best example of it) in a way that other media fails at#Hero is about a gay disabled teen with superpowers and somehow tumblr does not know about it#It is such a fun riff on superheroes while also being genuinely sweet and touching and sad#It was meant to get a tv show but the writer passed so it got stuck in production hell :(#Frankenstein is Frankenstein. It's just good on like every level. Victor is my problematic fave. I will take no criticism.#I am however on my knees hoping the Guillermo Del Toro adaptation finally gets it right#one flew over the cuckoo's nest means so much to me but no one ever talks about it beyond the Ratched and Mcmurphy stuff#who are the least interesting characters to me. And I find the debate about the sexism ignores that the novel is about the structural abuse#of the mentally ill

Very likely the only remaining copies in existence, these production-used sketches are the original blueprints for the proposed Superlab on the Emmy Award-winning television series Breaking Bad! The first artwork contains an initial idea layout of the room with what was to be a budget of $40,000 for the entire lab. The other shows a more finalized rendering which includes the giant silver tanks in the center – something that drove the production costs MUCH higher to incorporate. This sheet is also marked with the date and season in which the set design occurred. ✍🏻
Complete with creasing, wrinkles, folds, marks, and handwritten notes, this would have been handled by the BrBa production and directing departments along with artists, designers, construction and crew. Acquired directly from the set dresser on the show who was in charge of purchasing all the materials and equipment used to create the final set for the Superlab, this super-rare find makes for an amazing conversation piece matted and framed up on my wall!

Man in a Suitcase: All That Glitters (1.10, ITC, 1967)
"But I understand that. Cos I help people too."
"Out of kindness."
"For money."
"How much money?"
"Well, how much help do you need?"
"My friend told me that you were difficult. And rude."
"Well, you have very well informed friends."
#man in a suitcase#all that glitters#classic tv#herbert wise#stanley r. greenberg#richard bradford#barbara shelley#michael goodliffe#eric thompson#dorothy edwards#derek newark#norman wynne#duncan lamont#alan baulch#kevin stoney#peter bennett#dickie owen#larry cross#kathleen st. john#the second episode to go into production‚ and after the exposition heavy pilot this was to act as a kind of blueprint episode to show#McGill's world and the kind of life he lived and the jobs he took. he's notably more morally grey here‚ with a mercenary attitude that's at#odds with many of the contemporary brit tv heroes of the time; his fee given here is £100 a week plus expenses (usually altered to#the comparable 300 dollars in subsequent episodes) but his additional offer (1000 pounds to find an abducted child‚ 2000 more to get him#back alive) is startlingly dark. being an early production ep‚ there are several references to McGill's troubles with US Intelligence and#his shady past. the end of the ep is again quite remarkably violent in comparison to ITC contemporaries but Bradford didn't take the idea#lightly: in interviews at the time he stated that he didn't want McGill to always rely on a gun‚ and that if he did use one then he wanted#there to be a sense of the seriousness and of the consequences of that decision. a starry guest cast includes horror icon Babara Shelley in#a role clearly written to be slightly critical of her characters money brains and guts in contrast to her weaker politician husband (it#doesn't work‚ she's just too sympathetic and the criticisms are dumb and misogynistic) and Goodliffe as her spineless husband. all of them#are acted offscreen by that icon of Road Sense (and ig maybe other stuff) Eric T in a powerhouse performance as a gangland creep

#when im confident im familiar w everything im gonna listen 1 by 1 and make a tier list of every track theyve ever released#which is like a good 12 hours of music i think. enrichment for me#its rly hard to rank whole albums bc they have very different vibes to me n hit at different times#but ranking individual tracks should be doable. theres usually a flop or two per album for me anyway#FINALLY been listening to alligator and everyone was right to say this is the blueprint. its unpolished in places but really strong#i wish theyd stuck more w that style than mellowing out so much bc every now and then u get a glimpse of that and its SOOOO#like i love most of laugh track its really cohesive n coherent as a whole they def thought abt how the tracks fit together#n im glad they split it from first two pages altho i probably wouldve put crumble on f2p and eucalyptus on lt...but thats just me#BUT smoke detector is smth else its got smth a little more raw n immediate to it. very heavily reminiscent of alligator#its just an 8 minute long haze u can tell they got rly into it jamming in the studio i hope it packs as much punch live!!!!#i caught snippets of their glasto set online n fuuuuuckkkk theyre still at their peak!! just wish i could tweak the setlist a little#n wish there was more lt over f2p argh. get rid of the overly tight production let them just fucking Go at it !!!!!#if it was up to me they wouldnt be allowed to play any of i am easy to find either cuz thats the only album i rly dont like#ARGH SO EXCITED THO!!!!!!!#.diaries

Set Clear Goals: The Blueprint for Success
Tumblr media
Imagine setting off on a journey without a map, a compass, or even a clear destination in mind. You’d likely end up wandering aimlessly, unsure of which direction to take or where you might ultimately arrive. Setting clear goals is like having a detailed map and a reliable compass; they guide you with precision and purpose. This blog post will delve into the critical importance of setting clear goals, how to effectively formulate them, and practical steps to ensure you stay on course.
Why Setting Clear Goals Matters
1. Provides Direction Clear goals serve as your guiding stars, offering direction amidst the vast sea of possibilities. Without them, you might find yourself drifting, responding to external influences rather than steering towards a defined objective. Clear goals help you focus on what’s important and provide a sense of purpose, ensuring every step you take is aligned with your ultimate destination.
Metaphor: Think of goals as the stars that guide ancient sailors at sea. Without them, you’d drift aimlessly in a vast ocean, hoping the currents would lead you somewhere favorable. Clear goals provide a fixed point of reference, helping you navigate through life’s complexities and steer towards your desired destination.
2. Enhances Motivation Goals are like the fuel that powers your engine. With a clear objective, each effort you make propels you closer to your dream. The sense of progress and achievement you experience as you reach each milestone acts as a powerful motivator, encouraging you to keep pushing forward despite any obstacles you may encounter.
Metaphor: Goals are the fuel in your vehicle, transforming your potential energy into kinetic energy. Without them, you might stall or lose momentum. Each milestone you pass refuels your drive, keeping your journey alive and dynamic.
3. Facilitates Decision-Making Goals simplify the decision-making process. When faced with multiple options, your goals act as signposts, pointing you toward the choices that align best with your aspirations. They provide a framework for evaluating your options, ensuring that your decisions contribute to your progress rather than diverting you from your path.
Metaphor: Imagine you’re at a crossroads with multiple paths to choose from. Goals act as signposts that clearly indicate the direction towards your ultimate destination. They help you choose the path that aligns with your objectives and steer clear of distractions that could lead you astray.
4. Measures Progress Having specific goals allows you to measure your progress effectively. You can track how far you’ve come and see what still lies ahead. This ongoing assessment not only keeps you motivated but also helps you make necessary adjustments along the way, ensuring you stay on the right track.
Metaphor: Goals are like mile markers on a highway. They let you know how far you’ve traveled and how much further you need to go. This continuous feedback loop helps you adjust your pace, make informed decisions, and stay motivated throughout your journey.
How to Set Clear Goals
1. Define Your Vision Start by understanding what you truly want to achieve. This involves introspection and asking yourself key questions:
What is my ultimate aim?
Where do I see myself in the future?
What are my core values and passions?
Having a clear vision provides a broad sense of direction and helps you set goals that are meaningful and aligned with your deeper aspirations.
Metaphor: Your vision is the lighthouse on the horizon, guiding your journey across the turbulent waters of life. It illuminates the path and shows you where you’re heading, ensuring you stay focused on reaching your desired port.
2. Use the SMART Criteria To be effective, your goals should adhere to the SMART criteria:
Specific: Clearly state what you want to achieve.
Measurable: Define how you will measure your progress and success.
Achievable: Ensure the goal is realistic and attainable.
Relevant: Align the goal with your broader objectives and values.
Time-bound: Set a deadline to create a sense of urgency and commitment.
Example: Instead of saying “I want to get fit,” a SMART goal would be “I want to run a 5K marathon in under 30 minutes by October 31.”
Metaphor: Think of SMART goals as the detailed map and compass that chart your journey. They provide clarity and precision, ensuring each step you take brings you closer to your destination.
3. Break Down Large Goals Large goals can be overwhelming and intimidating. To make them more manageable, break them down into smaller, achievable tasks. This approach is akin to planning a series of base camps on your ascent up a mountain. Each smaller goal serves as a stepping stone, making the overall journey less daunting and more achievable.
Metaphor: Climbing a mountain is daunting if you look at the peak from the base. Instead, focus on reaching each base camp. These smaller, attainable milestones make the journey to the summit less overwhelming and more achievable.
4. Write Them Down Documenting your goals makes them more tangible and real. Write them down and place them somewhere visible. This constant reminder keeps your goals at the forefront of your mind and reinforces your commitment to achieving them.
Metaphor: Writing down your goals is like carving them into stone. It solidifies your intentions and serves as a constant reminder of your journey, keeping your destination clearly in sight.
Staying on Track with Your Goals
1. Create an Action Plan An action plan is your detailed guide to achieving your goals. It outlines the specific steps you need to take, assigns deadlines to each task, and prioritizes them. This structured approach ensures you stay organized, focused, and on track, avoiding unnecessary detours.
Metaphor: Your action plan is the detailed travel itinerary for your journey. It outlines each step, ensuring you know when to turn, where to stop, and what to do next, keeping your journey smooth and efficient.
2. Monitor Your Progress Regularly reviewing your goals and assessing your progress is crucial. This ongoing evaluation helps you stay aligned with your objectives and allows you to celebrate your successes and learn from any setbacks. Adjusting your strategy based on your progress ensures you remain on the right path.
Metaphor: Monitoring your progress is like calibrating your compass. It ensures you stay on course, allowing you to make necessary adjustments and maintain your direction towards your goals.
3. Stay Flexible Life is unpredictable, and circumstances may change. Staying flexible with your goals allows you to adapt to these changes without losing sight of your destination. Flexibility ensures that you can navigate around obstacles and stay on course, even when faced with unexpected challenges.
Metaphor: Think of flexibility as the ability to tack your sails. Just as sailors adjust their sails to harness changing winds, staying flexible with your goals helps you adapt to life’s shifting currents and continue moving forward.
4. Seek Support Sharing your goals with friends, family, or mentors can provide valuable support and encouragement. Their insights and feedback can help you stay motivated and accountable. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network increases your chances of success and provides a source of strength during challenging times.
Metaphor: Your support network is like the crew on your ship. They provide assistance, encouragement, and valuable insights, helping you navigate the seas and stay on course towards your goals.
5. Celebrate Achievements Every milestone reached is a port worth celebrating. Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. Celebrating these moments reinforces your progress and keeps your motivation high, encouraging you to continue your journey.
Metaphor: Each achievement is a port of call on your voyage. Taking time to celebrate these stops rejuvenates your spirit and prepares you for the next leg of your journey.
Conclusion
Setting clear goals is akin to charting a course for a grand adventure. They provide direction, motivation, and purpose, guiding you through the journey of life with clarity and confidence. By defining your vision, using the SMART criteria, breaking down large goals, and staying on track, you can navigate the path to success effectively. Remember, each goal you set is a star in your constellation, lighting your way towards a fulfilling and accomplished future.
Metaphor: Goals are the stars in your constellation, guiding your way through the night. Each one lights up your path, ensuring you navigate the journey with purpose and direction. Start setting your goals today and embark on your journey to success, knowing that with each star you set, you bring yourself closer to your dreams.
With these guidelines, you can set clear, actionable goals that will steer you towards success. Whether you’re aiming for personal growth, career advancement, or any other achievement, clarity in your goals is the compass that will guide you to your destination. Start setting your goals today and embark on a journey towards a successful and fulfilling future.

Weird 2 me how costume designers get credited with lead concept artists/costume illustrators' design work and vice-versa. Very weird hearing stories from ppl in film who spearheaded the design work (down to textile, patterning, costume direction etc.) then seeing all the attention and accolades going to someone who worked for them get the credit bc of their title.
THIS POST IS ABOUT SEMANTICS NOT ABOUT QUALITY OR NECESSITY OF DIFFERENT ROLES IN PRODUCTION. ALL ROLES ARE IMPORTANT AND IT'S JUST WEIRD TO ME THAT AN INDIVIDUAL WILL BE RECOGNIZED AS THE SOLE PERSON FILLING A ROLE THAT IS OFTEN A COLLABORATION BETWEEN SEVERAL KEY INDIVIDUALS IN A DEPARTMENT (OR CROSS-DEPARTMENT), SUPPLEMENTED BY THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT THEY LEAD AND DIRECT.

I’m a cabinetry engineer, and even I didn’t expect that to be a real thing when I started my career.
There’s some mystique about engineering as a career - people hear the title “Engineer”, and think that their everyday job involves calculus, and putting onto paper things which shape the landscape, travel through air or water, or make electronics do things that was once only science fiction. Sure, there’s engineers for all of that and more, but when someone thinks about cabinetry, they also usually think of a trade that older men do as a hobby, or the melamine boxes you can buy from a home improvement store that seem like ordinary fixtures to put in a kitchen or garage. The idea that such things could be coupled with a title of “engineer” might seem like self-inflating a job for ego’s sake.
Yet, that’s really not the case, in spite of what imposter syndrome might tell me, or my colleagues. Every week, often every day, I’m solving unique problems for my company’s clients, applying trigonometry to the geometry within the methods of production, and then getting into various levels of genuine coding to prepare for CNC production. I have to take into consideration the available materials that can be used, and how environmental factors might change them over time, coupled with constant conversions between metric and imperial (feet, inches) measurement systems as both are used for different details of the same part, multiple times within the same cabinet. Often, I’m the enforcer of laws pertaining to the cabinetry; holding designs to accessibility standards for disabled people, or ease of cleaning for medical applications, a service which goes unmentioned and taken for granted until an architect has a conflict of design intent or material compatibility. Finally, I have to put all those considerations together, and ensure that the materials are accounted for, ordered, and possible to manufacture with the tools in the production shop my company runs. If all that isn’t legitimate modern engineering, then someone should find me a different definition, and I’ll take it up with the publisher of that particular dictionary.
Perhaps, reader, if you feel you’ve been given too big a job title for the shoes you’re filling, or haven’t quite reached success in your career, consider that imposter syndrome is underselling you to yourself. This goes for pretty much everything - even (especially) things that might not have direct financial benefits.
