I should stop pretending I’m not southern
#post brought to you by an old cd of country music my grandma sent me#(she’s clearing out her house cuz she’s moving and she thought I might like it it’s an old burned cd of songs she and my grandpa liked#that I would always ask to listen when we went anywhere in their old pickup truck and I’ve been listening to it#it’s mostly Johnny cash Dolly Parton and various bluegrass and it’s like. yeah. I actually loved this music)#I should get back into a lot of the country artists I used to listen to#and then stopped when I started pretending I hated country cuz I didn’t wanna be associated with it or the south or being a fucking redneck#like damn did you know I used to wanna learn to play the banjo? maybe I should look into that…..#I’ve mentioned my rodeos n shit and I still have my cowboy boots and spurs and hats n stuff from when I rode horses#maybe I should stop consciously getting rid of my southern accent….#I mean I’ve never been able to completely shake it so most ppl can’t really notice#but if I tell them where I’m from they’re like ooohhhh that makes sense#but yeah if I don’t focus on it when I talk I have a much thicker accent than it sounds like#I should stop doing that…..#idk the older I get the more I miss the south and the culture and stuff#and also it pisses me off how ppl talk about the south#both in general and where I live now#actually had someone once tell me I didn’t ‘sound dumb enough’ to be southern#like man fuck you#anyways the point is I missed country music and I think I’m gonna start listening to it a lot more <3#cuz what point is there in pretending I don’t like it#and who cares if every person I’ve ever been close with fucking hates country music and would make fun of me if I ever even BEGAN to say#I liked it so anyways#kaz rambles

Soggy Bottom Boys - I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow 2000
"I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" is a traditional American folk song first recorded by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. The song was originally titles "Farewell Song" when printed in a Richard Burnett songbook in 1913. Burnett recorded the song in 1927 but this version was unreleased and the master recording destroyed. The first commercially released record was by Emry Arthur in 1928, and which gave the song its current title.
It's been covered plenty of times during the years with lyrical tweaks, but the biggest impact worldwide happened with the release of the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, where it plays a central role in the plot, earning the three runaway protagonists public recognition as the Soggy Bottom Boys. The song had lead vocals by Dan Tyminski, who also was the vocalist on Avicii's 2013 hit "Hey Brother".
"I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" received a CMA Award for "Single of the Year" in 2001 and a Grammy for "Best Country Collaboration with Vocals" in 2002, and also named Song of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2001.
It earned a total of 70,4% total yes votes here.
If you love great movies with amazing music, please do check this one out! :D <3

Writing a Southern Javert and being someone who listens to a lot of country/bluegrass/folk means some weird songs get associated in my brain with him, but—listen. "James River Blues".
That train came on through/And the works gotten slow/Now where's a boat man to go?
I've seen good men going wrong/I've seen bad ones get it right/As the river rolls along/I'll be steppin' out tonight
Floatin' down, down below/The bridge til the waters edge/From the ridge to the ledge/From the hills to the sea/I'll become a memory

Big list of my Mannequin Mark headcanons so far
Mark has autism and depression, neither of which are diagnosed. His special interest is woodworking and is often the only thing he has spoons for. He avoids getting a diagnosis out of the fear that it will mean there’s something “wrong with [him].”
He is ethnically Maya.
He in fluent in English and Spanish and is a native speaker of Yucatec.
They are 52 y/o currently. They escaped the cult in their early 20s, met Wallter in their early 30s, got married at 44, and got divorced at 50.
She identifies as a nonbinary gay man.
He was originally built as a dress form mannequin, something that made him extremely dysphoric. Once he got out of the cult he carved himself a new body without breasts.
Mark designed his arms himself and they’re something that makes him far more articulated than other mannequins, who can typically only rotate their arms at the shoulders (sagittal plane), upper arms (transverse plane), and wrists (transverse plane). He’s made a similar pair of arms for Jim. All mannequins can rotate on the transverse and sagittal planes at the chest joint.
Despite his comparative flexibility, Mark is still not as flexible as the average human would be; he’s made of oak wood and that wood is 1. heavy, and 2. not flexible. This means that making himself with a ball jointed style simply wasn’t possible. The most noticeable consequence of this is that he can only rotate his fingers on the frontal plane, meaning he can’t spread them.
Over the years as he’s sculpted new or altered pieces for his body he’s unintentionally made himself fatter each time. He likes being a fat guy, it just wasn’t on purpose.
The “hair” on their body are notches that they carved in, then carefully stained to be a darker color than the rest of them. They gave themself facial and chest hair for fun, but the arm hair does serve an actual function. The longer notches are exactly an inch apart each, with the shorter notches being half inches between. This allows them to use their arm as a measuring tool in a pinch.
Her face is drawn on, but it can still emote. When she blushes, black lines appear on her cheeks. The mouth doesn’t open, even when she’s speaking. Drinks just get tipped back and disappear, and bites vanish from food whenever nobody’s looking.
He’s a good cook! Self-taught for fun (he doesn’t need to eat to survive), then he had an actual reason to once he started seeing Wallter. He still cooks for himself nowadays, just less often.
Xer favorite food is rib eye steak.
His favorite drink is bloxy cola. His favorite alcoholic drink is a Mai Tai made with Charanda and the cheapest orange liqueur you can find.
Their favorite music genres are Bluegrass and Zydeco, and they hate when people reduce them to “banjo music” or “accordion music.”
He gets disability aid money from the government for technically being a bilateral amputee, something he got at Walter’s encouragement.
He gets payment through selling what he makes and taking commissions himself, which isn’t great considering he is very very bad at pricing his work. Wallter helped him with it before, but nowadays he has a bad habit of giving friends outrageous discounts and under-pricing his work because “[he does] it fer the love a’ wood!”
His work consists of anything from whittling, to toy making, to carving, to even just turning logs into planks. If it involves doing something to wood, he’ll do it.
They helped Jim escape the cult.
He met Lampert at Rokea while furniture shopping with Wallter. He later encountered him again at a gay bar looking very out of place, and that’s where they hit it off as friends. He has never felt paternalistic feelings towards Lampert.
They and Wallter met at a mixer for disabled people in construction jobs.
The scarf Wallter has was originally hers, and something she escaped the cult with. She gave it to Wallter in hopes she could give it a more positive association. It worked.
He’s always seen wood as the superior building material, but he didn’t actually hate concrete until Wallter started drinking Gray Stuff and he saw the effects it was having on his body; the stiff joints, the slowed movement, the memory issues… he still asks DrRETRO if he can see Wallter’s x-rays, even when the answer is always no.
Even if he got into a new relationship he’d still have feelings for Wallter, something that would bring him a lot of guilt.

Archangel Michael + music!
Disclaimer: this is my personal experience with him, this kind of thing can be very individual.
I've found that music is a very important part of my practice with Michael. Especially music that makes me feel more connected to him, my energy and the earth. For me that's always been folk music, even before I've started working with him.
Since I've started I've suddenly developed a deep love for older folk, blues and bluegrass music or new songs of those genres that have that same feel.
I typically know if Michael likes a song if it reminds me of him a lot for really no reason other then vibes. Sometimes I can tell when I light his candle and play music allowed. His flame will get kinda crazy when a song is playing that he likes. For no particular reason, here's some of the songs I've come to associate with him and that I've found he likes :)
Carrie & Lowell - Sufjan Stevens
I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song - Jim Croce
The Stable Song - Gregory Alan Isakov, The Colorado Symphony
Steel Rail Blues - Jim Croce
Harvest Blues - The Brothers Comatose, AJ Lee & Blue Summit

Looks up traditional bluegrass dancing.
Sees it falls under 'clogging' but is often more accurately called 'flatfooting', which, in turn, seems to be a strain of dance that originated as 'buck dance'...
mfw 🤨
Look into it and, naturally 'buck dance' is a term associated with minstrelsy and early American entertainment. 😑😑

Diasomnia Character Songs and Associations
Tumblr media
It's finally here! The end of the character songs and associations series! It took a bit longer to get out than I thought it would, but it's now finished.
Here is the seventh dorm, Diasomnia; the dorm of the spirit of nobility. The final of the seven, but also, interestingly, the dorm that started this entire idea.
Notes: Every song is from my liked songs playlist (so feel free to judge me for my taste, haha!) and I only allowed myself to use an artist once for this project. There is also some strong language and mature themes in some of the songs, so be aware if you choose to listen to them. I’ve included: - A song that represents them, - A song they'd listen to, and (for some) an additional song, depending on the character and circumstance
The full Spotify playlist for ALL songs and characters is linked at the end of the post.

Malleus Draconia
Represented by: Nymphs Finding the Head of Orpheus - Nicole Dollanganger
This song was actually what inspired me to make this series. It just reminds me so much of Malleus. The narrative setting is similar to the ruins he loves to explore, the music itself is somewhat ethereal, and the lyrics reflect the loneliness Malleus often feels, as well as his fear of loss and change.  It's powerful, it's reflective, it's strange, and it's beautiful. Much like Malleus himself.
Listens to: Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K. 550: IV: Allegro assai - W.A. Mozart, Sinfonia Varsovia, Yehudi Menuhin
Malleus likely listens to primarily classical music, and probably knows how to play many of the pieces he listens to. He would especially enjoy the playfulness of Mozart's compositions, as most Mozart pieces (operas, symphonies, etc.) have a light mood, and are usually filled with jokes. Absolutely perfect for a fae prince!
Lilia Vanrouge
Represented by: Phantasmagoria - Polkadot Cadaver
This song feels very Lilia to me. With a focus on (possibly?) playful scaring, and the uncertain or hidden origins of what people see. There's spooks and startles, but is generally meant to be fun... or that's what's assumed. The Avant-Garde metal genre also suits the unique, fun intensity of Lilia's character.
Listens to: After Life in Purgatory - Lock Up
Okay, I know that 'Lock Up' is grindcore, and not the thrash metal that Lilia canonically listens to. BUT he would totally also listen to music like this. It's fast. It's loud. It's full of screaming. Lilia would love it! (And he'd probably somewhat relate to the lyrics of this song too, considering his past...)
Bonus - Suggests for Music Club: Renewal - Veil
Lilia would suggest something like Veil to play in Music Club, arguing that it's more "gentle" and "approachable" for non-metal fans than some other subgenres, which, yes, that may be the case, but still... Cater would be a bit freaked out.
Silver
Represented by: イジメ、ダメ、ゼッタイ - Babymetal
Silver is an interesting character, being both gentle and fierce simultaneously, which is well-encapsulated in Babymetal's music. The lyrics to this song also are akin to Silver's worldview, and his wish for balance, harmony, and connection.
Listens to: Over the Edge - Sarah Jarosz
I think Silver would listen to softer music, probably a lot of folk, bluegrass, and country music. and, like Jade, he would especially love songs about nature and the outdoors. It just seems like it would suit him!  However, I also think he shares a lot of his father's taste in music, resulting in some very strange playlists...
Sebek
Represented by: Soap - The Oh Hellos
Sebek seems to struggle a lot with his mixed identity, outright rejecting half of his heritage. (I think that's something he will learn to accept at some point in the future, and be able to become even stronger in himself and his identity as a result.) However, Sebek is also a bold, determined individual, and truly cares deeply for those he loves and respects... even if he may not outwardly show it.
Listens to: String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, Op. 80, MWV R37: II: Allegro assai - Felix Mendelssohn, Quatuor Ébène
Because I think Malleus favours classical string music, I also think that Sebek would believe that he should also listen to similar music (as it is obviously superior!) And while he does enjoy many classical pieces, especially Mendelssohn's compositions, it would probably not be Sebek's preferred music in most situations, even if he does listen to it often.
Bonus - Prefers to listen to: Oscar Wilde Gets Out - Elton John
I'm not totally sure why, but I think Sebek would really like music by Elton John! I think that the softer pop rock sound would be something he would enjoy. Oscar Wilde Gets Out would definitely appeal to Sebek, for the literary allusions and references if nothing else.

Song Review(s): Billy Strings - “Taking Water” -> “Ice Bridges” (Live, Dec. 6, 2024)
Discerning listeners will notice a transitional moment where jamming morphs into ensemble playing, “Taking Water” solidifies into “Ice Bridges” and Billy Strings and band declare themselves not mucking about.
The two-song giveaway sequence from the bluegrass quintet’s Dec. 6 tour opener and associated livestream from Memphis juxtaposes lyrics with instrumental music; existential dread with unbridled joy, and results in an admixture of modern bluegrass that helps explain Strings’ rapid rise and rabid fanbase.
A stark environmental warning, “Taking Water” nevertheless drowns out the impending doom with a brisk arrangement that counterbalances and assuages somewhat the fears thinking people of the 2020s carry about daily. This is the purpose of live music to be sure.
When “Ice Bridges” ultimately emerges from the “->” and guitarist Strings and fiddler Alex Hargreaves lock into the composition’s descending lines, that purpose is ever more evident as solos crisscross the stage to banjoist Billy Failing to mandolinist Jarrod Walker and back to the instigators.
The ’grass is high here; the spot where Strings and company affirm their commitment to old-time music in a new-fangled way.
Grade card: Billy Strings - “Taking Water” -> “Ice Bridges” (Live - 12/6/24) - A/A+

also bluegrass is from Appalachia, is it not? it’s not largely associated with Mississippi. I begin to suspect that the person running those polls may not be particularly aware.

Frontier completed a Western-themed casino expansion, Jun. 1982. Photos circa '82-84.
The main building was extended towards the Strip with a new Western-styled facade. A longhorn motif debuted over a new casino entrance and marquee sign. The design by Marnell Corrao Associates, with signs by Sign Systems Inc (SSI), represented a return to the Frontier's original Old West theme which had been abandoned as the Frontier modernized in the 50s-60s.
Details were described in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
“The centerpiece of the new casino, which is twice the size as the old one, is a slot and video game area known as the Wild Horse Slot Saloon. The glittering arcade, embellished with wood-plank floors, lantern-like lighting fixtures and a crystal chandelier, has more than 200 new machines with an unusual configuration designed to make customers more comfortable ... The new casino includes a poker parlor and an entertainment lounge. The card room has "hold 'em" and Seven-Card Stud games. The 112-seat lounge features live bluegrass music in the afternoon and evening hours.
“Grand opening ceremonies were in front of the hotel's new east entrance, which opens directly onto the Strip. The exterior is highlighted by a 30-foot sign bearing the name of the hotel in illuminated letters set against a background of copper, brass, imported Italian marble and beveled, plated peach mirrors. A stylized longhorn steer. head with a horn-span of 28 feet is one of the building's most distinguishing features.
“A series of turn-of-the-century lamp posts, planters and brick pavers adorn the area in front of the east entrance. Other new facilities include an expanded showroom, new staff offices, showroom reservation office, computer center, tour and travel desk and PBX center.”
- Frontier Hotel Expansion Celebrated. Review-Journal, 6/24/82 p24.
The "Longhorn marquee" by SSI was seen in front of the hotel as late as Spring '88. It was relocated to the Frontier's rear driveway on S. Sammy Davis Jr Dr, where it remained on site for a few years after the Frontier close. It was moved to the Neon Museum in 2010. The casino facade was modified in later years.
