Review: I wasn't very familiar with the original Bluebeard tale so I had to look it up before I started reading. After reading the original tale I was curious to see how this one would go and I'm happy to say I enjoyed it a lot. My favorite part is definitely the relationship between Izolde and Arrow. I was definitely intrigued with how they would be communicating given the circumstances but I just loved their interactions with each other. Bluebeard has so many nicknames for his wife and I am weak for that. I love them, I just love them.

But of course we end on a cliff hanger and you can bet that I'll be reading the next book.

Since you can't seem to swing a cat without knocking over a fairytale retelling that centers a different character from the original lead, you know who I want to hear from? Bluebeard's first wife.

Because, like, you can assume that every wife before the one we follow fell into the same trap of finally opening the Forbidden Closet of Mystery and discovering the hidden corpses, and was then killed to protect the secret...but the first wife would have no corpses to find. So why did he kill her?

Was it just for her money, and that's how he became rich enough to woo all the others? Was she getting ready to leave him for whatever reason? Did she cheat? Did he cheat, and kill her in the confrontation after she found out? Does he have some sordid criminal past even before his string of uxoricide, and when she found it, he killed her to protect that? Did he simply, over time, come to find her odious?

I know this was never a consideration in creating the story, and it doesn't really need to be, but...what goes on?

Stoker's book was ending up quite unlike the lurid sensation novel he had first envisioned. In making his final revisions, he fell back instinctively, if perhaps unconsciously, on the sturdy substructure of the litary form that had sustained him since childhood: the fairy tale. The plot took on an archetypal simplicity, drawing on the folktale motif of abused and abandoned children. An orphan (Jonathan Harker, bereft of parentage like most of the main characters) ventures into the woods and is confronted with a terrifying demon king, who chases him home, but the young hero must return to the dreaded place to destroy the monster and restore moral order. Among the many calssic tales evoked are "Bluebeard" (the castle with locked rooms and bloody secrets), "Jack the Giant Killer" (the ogre who chases the protagonist to his homeland and is slain), and "Little Red Riding Hood" (explicitly cited in Stoker's text and mimicked when a wolf crashes through a bedroom window to menace Lucy and her mother). In short, for Dracula to be saved as a publishable tale, it had to be shrunken, collapsed, and dwindled down into a bedtime story of childhood abandonment and rescue.

A silence meets this question. Armand watches Daniel shift and sink into greater comfort, and there is something so lewd about it — the line of his thigh rising, the disappearance below the knee as it bends around the wall of the coffin, the way this sprawl parts Daniel's legs and speaks such lazy comfort. So lewd, and yet... On his back, the silk cushions produce a haloed sheen around his head. His Daniel, his beloved, who believes in nothing so lofty as religion but believes in Armand, who chases again and again grotesque, distorted divinity and begs each time more sweetly to slake its hunger with his sacrifice. His arrogant, monstrous martyr, laid out in death, in desire — for Daniel, the two are often one and the same.

As he watches Daniel, his malcontent softens. He has given his dear one so much, and yet stripped away so much; he has left Daniel capable of craving only one thing: him. 'There is nothing for you now, Daniel, except me.' How can Armand blame him for acting as every fiber of his being has been warped to act? He cannot.

He is Daniel's self-preservation, he, Daniel's control. It is not Daniel's function to temper himself, but to want, desperately, crushingly, exquisitely. And it is Armand's function to give him everything he wants and to pull him back from that last and greatest obliteration of the self. Give, and deny, and give again. It is not worth it to be angry with Daniel for finding him. He will simply have to hide the forbidden chamber once more. Deny. ... But for now, give.

"I am. You always please me Daniel, even when you vex me. That is the wicked thing," he says at last, ghosting the hand refused to Daniel's grasp up his warm, breathing, pulsing chest, and then dragging the nails back down, over Daniel's stomach. His words carry the lingering edge of reprimand, but the bite is gone out of them. "I am charmed even by your wrongdoing. Did you love it, curling up with a corpse? Sleep well, Daniel?"

Daniel does not expect to get to keep the hand he captured, not while armand is disheveled and fussy, but it still stings as it is taken away. even wreathed in delicious sleepy warmth, armand resists the temptation of his body. then again, daniel cannot remember if he has ever seen armand embarrassed before– perhaps it eclipses everything else, the sudden scramble to reinforce his pride with harsh words, and the tight press of his lips. he needn't be embarrassed at all, really. daniel only wanted to be closer. what a terrible habit he has of reaching for more and more of armand.

“ no, you coffin looks kind of exactly as regal as i thought it would. if it was a pine box, i would have passed it by thinking it couldn't have been yours. ”

armand’s chiding gaze holds daniel’s as securely as if he placed hands on either side of his jaw. he has seen armand wrathful, and this does not hold a candle, but armand does not need his wrath to hurt. only a dull pain, a disappointment that is neither unexpected nor enough to thwart his pleasure, but it is there nonetheless.

he shrugs, amusement flickering across his mouth at armand’s jab about his height. 

“ i guess. being too tall hasn’t stopped me before, ” but as if suddenly aware of the need to stretch his legs, he rolls onto his back and hooks his left over the edge of the coffin, perfectly at home. “ well, you know i live to confound you. But you aren’t even a little pleased to wake up next to me? ”

He’s got a big thing for pomegranates, but nothing’s more annoying to him than coming across an enticingly red one just for the seeds to be acidic. When their skin’s red he tends to just go for it and bite into the full thing without peeling it.

He enjoys classic fairy and folklore tales, especially in their morbid lessons and rawness. The Red Hiding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin and Bluebeard are some of his favorites.

Because of his peculiar name and his habit to juggle identities, he’s always found a strange comfort in Spirited Away and Juliet’s monologue in Romeo and Juliet.

He believes he’s got a talent for writing, but his confidence always falters when he wants to put into paper a musing that’s dear to him.

His smile’s slightly crooked/lopsided, and it’s much more noticeable when his smile’s genuine. Pakunoda and Machi secretly think it’s he most adorable thing ever.

His hair got to his shoulders at some point, he’d even style it in a low ponytail or a braid, but he cut cut cut it bc too much work.

I doubt he’s figured his ideal type. Although he’s certain he doesn’t want to date someone who’s just himself in a different font style and personality wise. He prefers contrast, be it physically, morally or in their overall demeanor. Not day and night either, just someone who’s different to keep him guessing and make things interesting.

If he wanted a pet, he’d be in for a fish, a cat or a snake. He doesn’t want to be all up in their space, and he doesn’t want them to be in his either. Just a presence is enough. But bc of maintenance and stuff, he’d prefer cat… or just a stray one he’d bring treats to and hang out with from time to time.

He’s only got a crush on someone once, when the Troupe was still starting out and lingered longer in areas to set up their plans. He never acted on it tho, and they were mutually rude to one another. So go figure lmao. (That person’s probably still alive and most likely lost their student job bc of the Troupe’s shenanigans)

No, I don't think that RGU "subverts fairy tale narratives". On the contrary. I don't know how intentional the writing was on the writer's part but RGU's themes, structure, and resolution are much closer aligned to the Grimm-fashion fairy tales than the manicured opening sequence might make the viewer believe. At some points they do conciously reference fairy tales whilst alos having a good grasp on it's story contents. In fact, the opening sequence is less accurate about fairy tales than the actual plot of RGU.

Anyhow, actually a quick rambling how many fairy tale motives are in Utena. some referenced to, some overtly named, some just by my personal associciation:

The only fairy tale where the story is actually changed is Sleeping Beauty. There the visual reference is extremely strong with the duel plattform (a tower) being hidden in a forbidden forest, surrounded by thorns and roses, a princess waiting/sleeping (in her coffin) on a bed of roses. But unlike in the tale, the princess isn't woken up by the whimse of the prince but is allowed to choose if she even wants to wake up. [By the way, here's an essay comparing the pschycological literary interpretation of (The contemporary reading of) Sleeping Beauty with RGU.]

On the theme of girl locked away in a tower: Rapunzel come to my mind. Indeed Rapunzel loves her prince but he's also her co-conspirator as well as mean to escape her captivity. Their scheming is interrupted, both get horribly injured while attempting to escape. They both wnader around for a long time until their finally find each other. Scarred, they still are deeply happy to have found each other once more.

One OST track is titled "Bluebeard's castle". So fitting to be played in Akio's tower. The titular Bluebeard appears at first charming. Yet his bride discovers his secret chamber of previously killed women, relaizing what a monster her once so enarmoured husband is. It's a fairy tale beginning with a slight snese of unease, building up dread the longer the bride resides in the castle. What a perfect association for Akio's facade and body count of abuse.

The next Bluebeard in the making, Touga explicitly compares Utena with "the golden Goose"; In which every one tries to rip out the bird's golden feathers, creating a gigantic queue of greed. Even though Touga most likely wants to compare Utena to something precious worth exploiting, his comparison misses how the goose's doing finally made a princess laugh, and none actually was able to rip out the precious gold feathers.

Speaking of animals... In an conversation during which Nanami has a hard time naming her ever growing distress towards Touga's and her relationships, one statue in the background switches in the form of the "Musicians of Bremen". Nanami carriesway more animal associations than even Anthy. In fact Nanami turning into a cow is her being treated as domestic labour animal. In "The musicians of Bremen", labour animals are to be slaughtered after they can't labour anymore. So they flee their circumstances, band together (heh), and find a new home as band of misfits. Whereas the statue is a string of visual warnings about Nanami's dangerous situation, it gives me hope, that Nanami might, like the Bremen musicians, escape to a not glamorous but future full of support and friendship.

Last association coming to my mind. This is an entire free-falls association but with so many Utena-Nanami-paralles, why not make an animal comparison, too? Utena reminds me so much of the "Puss in Boots". Not destined to be anything but a cat, anything but a girl, she puts on clothing that shoul dnot be hers. It suits her quiet well. Yet the puss does it's deeds to help out their master who gave her the boots. They trick an evil magician with nothing but cleverness and ligt up their master into fortune. Utena doesn't help out of thanksfulness yet, like the cat, she does act out of care and adoration for the rose bride, and triumphs over a sinister figure that seemed once so overly powerful. LIke the wizard turning himself into a mouse, Akio turns out to not be overly powerful but actually a scared manchild who refuses to grow up, and actually isn't the allmighty figure he paints himself to be.

[Bonus: Saionji as the frog prince. Very serious analysis. Even though the popular image is one of a princess kissing a frog, and him turning into a prince, the actual tale is... not so gentle. The frog asks the princess to take hiom with her, in return to giving her back the ball that actually belongs to her. The princess feels humiliated having to play-act a romantic dinner scene at the frog's demands to sit on her side and be fed. Her protests are overruled by her father reprimanding her to hold her promise towards the frog. (Anthy mentioning how Akio is more like her father to her.) But the princess has her fill with the impertinent frog, throws him against a wall, and there: He becomes a prince. The parallels between Saionji getting beat up like a punching bag until he finally chills (somewhat) down are almost too obvious. Also, the frog and him share the colour green.]

In general, fairy tales often feature disempowered protagonists, often young women, most of the time they aren't even royalty. The protagonists often survive the most dire consequences by cleverness, resourcefulness but also their kindness to strangers - not raw power or powerful magic. I've no idea why people claim that retellings are "dark", "misbehaving", or "adult" because not only is it inaccurate to whom fairy tales were told, but even in format of children's publications, fairy tales are incredibly dark already. Children's fears of abusive parents, being neglected, mistrateatment, poverty, the world being scary being forsaken by mistakes by those who were supposed to care for the child, domestic violence, even incestuous abuse do feature in fairy tales - however, the protagonists survive the most dire of straits. Even if hurt in the process, they surivive, and "lived happily ever aftere". It's a faint, promise that they found happiness anyway. How similar it rings with "someday we will shine". If these common elements don't ressemble Utena's journey, and the circumstances of her friends, i don't know what else would bear a stronger ressemblance.

Apart from Anthy's and Akio's vague connection to godhood, and allegory, none of the kinds is special. Utena is a classic fairy tale orphan child, no special parentage, only her role as protagonist follows her fending off the darkness around her.

In Rebecca, Manderley continues to run according to Rebecca's instructions; no changes are made in the environs she designed; her study, bedroom, and wardrobe are left intact; and even the fancy dress ball follows her arrangements. By continuing his life at Manderley as if nothing has changed, Maxim prompts his second wife to ferret out his secret. When she seeks knowledge about Rebecca and imitates her, she acts according to his covert script.

Du Maurier's addition to the "Bluebeard" intertext is the dead first wife's participation, first by proxy

and then as a water-eaten body, in the drama being played at Bluebeard's house.

Sally Beauman, Afterword to Rebecca The first wife, Rebecca, is vivid and vengeful and, though dead, indestructible: her name lives on in the book’s title.

The second wife, the drab shadowy creature who narrates this story, remains nameless. We learn that she has a “lovely and unusual” name, and that it was her father who gave it her. The only other identity she has, was also bestowed by a man—she is a wife, she is Mrs. de Winter.

Sally Beauman, Afterword to Rebecca There is a final twist to Rebecca and it is a covert one. Maxim de Winter kills not one wife, but two. He murders the first with a gun,

and the second by slower, more insidious methods. The second Mrs. de Winter’s fate, for which she prepares herself throughout the novel, is to be subsumed by her husband.

in rebecca the narrator remaining nameless is meant to contrast rebecca's defiance of maxim with the narrator's acceptance of him. in the magnus archives, the obvious point being made re gertrude and jon's different recording signatures (simply her name vs his beholding title) is that unlike jon, gertrude refused to let herself be consumed by the eye and in turn, assist jonah with his plans (no, i'm not blaming jon for being manipulated by elias). also, jon's role as jonah's archivist results in his identity as an individual slowly being subsumed in a very literal sense as he gradually gives himself up to beholding. throughout season four he resembles elias more and more as he displays his powers. and then in the finale, mag 160 - "the eye opens", he becomes jonah/elias as he assumes his voice inflection, experiences his fear, speaks his words, and fulfills his goal of summoning the entities into their world.

Unlike Bluebeard's wives, they have the power to undo him.

Nothing so awful happens in The Secret Garden, because it’s a children’s book. As far as I know, the only gothic book in children’s literature. But in it, Mary also goes exploring the mansion beyond what she’s allowed to do, and discovers her cousin Colin, who despite being a rich British boy, is being kept essentially prisoner due to ableism.

Contrast that to Jane Eyre, where Jane notices there are weird things about the mansion, hears the creepy noises and suspects the explanations she is given, but never goes actively investigating, and doesn’t discover the truth by herself, rather having it be revealed to her by a third party.

Spoiler, but reader, Jane marries Rochester. And it’s presented as a happy ending, but she ties herself forever to a man who treats her with condescension, ignores her wishes, plays mind games with her, and, oh, yeah, kept his first wife locked up.

Meanwhile, Bluebeard’s wife, Violet Hunter, Jonathan Harker, and Mary Lennox all achieve happy endings. Knowing when to disobey instructions from the villains who have you in their power, and how to do it safely, is key to not end up trapped, in a fate worst than death, like those three women Jonathan found.

Today’s update is a parallel not just to Bluebeard, but the Sherlock Holmes story The Copper Beeches. In both cases, the heroine pushes the boundaries of what she’s allowed to do to sneak into locked rooms, and discover the true brutality of the master of the house by the women locked away—in one case, a living woman, in another, a room full of dead women.

I love how Jonathan fits right in between these two (and would be delighted to be counted one of them tbh). He disobeys Dracula’s instructions and goes exploring where he isn’t allowed, and finds three undead women. Their presence proves to Jonathan that his suspicions and growing dead were valid and things are even worse than he feared.

But also wouldn’t you say that these three are also Dracula’s victims and prisoners, in a way? Isn’t their fate something that Jonathan comes to fear more deeply than death itself?

I'm about 25k words in of what should be about 100k words by the end (pray for me that i dont get too Loquacious), and that's before several deep rounds of editing and then deciding what the fuck I want to actually do with this thing (serializing on a separate Substack is one idea; self-publishing as an ebook is another, but I also might try to sell it to at least a small press), so you're quite a ways out from getting to read it. I've never properly SAT on a work of fiction before -- I've always worked on longer fiction live, publishing it chapter by chapter online, and I rush to get my short stories out too, but this one feels precious and I really want to get it right.

What do you think made Will bluebeard's last wife? And how did Will understand that Hannibal was in love with him when he had the bluebeard discussion with Bedelia?

Hello! I see that someone already answered this question here, but I'll try to put my own spin on it.

Some context:

In the folktale, Bluebeard is a wealthy man whose wives keep mysteriously disappearing. He gives his seventh wife the key to all the locked doors in their house, but tells her not to open the door to the basement ("Secrets you're not to know, yet sworn to keep"). Of course, the wife goes snooping and discovers the corpses of all his former wives. It's a classic Pandora/Psyche myth with a horrific twist.

Key point: Bluebeard's seventh and final wife survives, inherits his fortune, and lives happily ever after.

The Bluebeard analogy is honestly perfect for Hannibal's character because it highlights the way he destroys everyone he loves. He brings a series of "wives" behind the veil (Miriam, Abigail, Gideon) and all of them end up maimed, mentally broken, or dead. This pattern echoes his childhood behavior, originating with the consumption of Mischa and developing with his mind games with Chiyoh. "Every family loves differently. Every love is unique." Hannibal expresses love through destruction and consumption.

Bedelia understands this. When she says she would've preferred to be Bluebeard's last wife, she means that she would've preferred to be the one who escaped Hannibal and lived happily ever after. She does not want to be on the receiving end of Hannibal's "love."

There's a deleted scene in the Antipasto script where she says the same line to Dimmond:

Basically, "Help me lock this monster up, because I'm not going to be one of his victims. I do want his money, though."

The same line, said accusingly to Will, takes on a different meaning. Hannibal is courting a new partner, and if Bedelia isn't his final wife anymore... well, she's going to end up in the basement with the rest. @genufa wrote an interesting analysis on this concept here.

Now, let's zoom out and view the whole conversation from Will's perspective:

Will can't let go of the fact that Bedelia emerged from Hannibal's influence completely unscathed, whereas Hannibal took--and continues to take--everything from Will. He's operating on his understanding of the Chesapeake Ripper: "Contrapasso. You play, you pay." So why does Hannibal make Will pay again and again and again, while Bedelia got away with mere psychological torment? According to Chesapeake Ripper logic, that would mean Bedelia is preferred, right?

Before this conversation, Will doesn't understand how Hannibal expresses love ( @suchawrathfullamb wrote a lovely post about this). He thinks that everything Hannibal did to him (encephalitis era, prison era, honeytrap codependency era, Mizumono, the Primavera human heart, the attempted brain-eating in Dolce) was out of pure sadism. If Hannibal found him more interesting than Randall, Margot, and his other violent patients, it was only because his empathy and involvement with the FBI made him a rare specimen.

Will's misdiagnosis of Hannibal's ability to love was inspired by this piece of hack psychoanalysis in chapter 51 of Hannibal:

Yes, Hannibal is excited by distress, but he loves those who bear distress beautifully, with strength, courage, and discipline. This is how he comes to care for people like Abigail, Jack, and Bella. And, of course, Will suffers the most pornographically beautifully of all.

"It's distress that excites him," Will thinks. So it catches his attention when Bedelia says of his forehead scar, "It excites [Hannibal] to see you marked in this particular way." Why? Why this particular way? Is it a mark of ownership (the metaphorical facial theory)? A symbol of the permanent effect Hannibal had on him? This is Bedelia's first hint that Will's distress means more to Hannibal than punishment or sadistic entertainment.

When Bedelia turns the Bluebeard analogy back on Will, it finally clicks for him that distress/destruction/consumption is the pattern of Hannibal's love, and the fact that Hannibal tortures Will more than anyone else means that Will holds a place of honor in his heart. With this context, Hannibal's attempt to eat his brain becomes an act of adoration. The mark on his forehead becomes a laurel wreath.

To answer your first question, I don't think "Bluebeard's last wife" is a great analogy for Will.

First of all, Bedelia never called him that. She implied that Will was becoming the next wife, emphasizing the threat associated with Hannibal's affection. Bluebeard's last wife would've ended up in the basement too if she hadn't been clever enough to escape, and Will doesn't seem particularly clever to Bedelia at this point. Even Will admits his surrender: "I don't know if I can save myself, and maybe that's just fine."

Second of all, Bluebeard's last wife betrays him to the authorities, and Will does the exact opposite in TWOTL. I guess you could interpret "I don't intend Hannibal to be caught a second time," as "I'm planning to kill him myself," but passionately embracing Hannibal before gently dragging him off a cliff in a failed murder-suicide doesn't read as "Bluebeard's last wife" behavior to me.

If Will is to be Bluebeard's last wife, it's because Hannibal's love for him breaks the pattern, meaning Hannibal is no longer Bluebeard. A true fairytale ending. <3
