Found in southern Africa. Larvae feed primarily on carrion or dung while adults are nectar feeders and important pollinators.

The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024 - Pancake Rocks
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After St Arnaud we headed pretty much due west to the coast, and turned down towards Greymouth. Happily we had time to stop at Pancake Rocks on the way, a fascinating geological formation that has so far survived the massive erosion associated with the creation of the Southern Alps, and constant pounding by the Tasman Sea. The waves have broken through in a few places, but we missed high tide and the blowholes blasting out fountains of seawater.
Pancake Rocks was originally formed off the coast, where shelly sediments was buried under thick layers of deep sediment, and converted to limestone. The horizontal layers are not in fact a product of the original deposition, but are stylobedding -imperfections in the limestone propagate sideways as the calcium carbonate starts to dissolve under one spot but not another, creating softer mudstones seperating the limestone layers. 25 million years later, the entire area has been uplifted, shifted 450km northeast, and most of the overlying rocks is gone.
One story about the creation of the area is that of the demigod Tūterakiwhanoa, who opened out the river channels to the coast by pushing the mountain ranges apart with his thighs - possibly the only time in history that manspreading has done something useful.
There's quite a nice walk around the top of the cliffs, and a number of interesting plant species in abundance, including the world's southernmost palm species.

A few of the species I'd seen before and have discussed earlier.

Extreme macro focus on a small blowfly. Loechel used advanced focus stacking techniques to create this incredibly sharp image. Taking multiple photos at different focus distances results in an image with a greater depth of field.

The Weird World, Weird Music blog is named after the album The Weird World Of Blowfly. If I'm not mistaken, the main theme of the album is a parody of a Jimmy Cliff song called "Wonderful World, Beautiful People." The style has been changed from the original reggae to a more funk/r&b rhythm, but the general tone and cadence of the lyrics are still there.
For some background, Blowfly was the alter-ego of Clarence Reid (1939-2016), a successful and prolific musician, songwriter, and record producer whose mainstream hits span the 1960s-1970s. Where he agruably left his most indelible mark on the music scene was with his raunchy alter-ego Blowfly. He is widely recognized as one of the progenitors of rap vocal styling and hip-hop culture, especially the more lyrically explicit sub-genre of gangster rap.
Blowfly is a perfect encapsulation of what this blog is about: weirdos and outsiders who made great music that you may not come across in your normal daily listening habits, and who are often left out of the mainstream history of music.
So if you'll join me, let's dive into the history of weird music!
