Ameridan’s End: Assault the Jaws of Hakkon
(Previous quest - On Ameridan's Trail)
Main questline: Ameridan’s End: Assault the Jaws of Hakkon
This is the first part of "Ameridan's End" questline.
Characters involved: Svarah Sun-Hair, Lace Harding, Bram Kenric, Gurd Harofsen
Preparations are in place to wage assault on the Jaws of Hakkon and search for Inquisitor Ameridan.
Part 1: Speak with Svarah Sun-Hair
Svarah: When you are ready, you have our blades, Inquisitor.
Dialogue options:
Special: Hakkon connects to Ameridan. [1] (If both “Storvacker Caged” and “What Yet Lingers” have been completed.)
General: Let us begin the assault. [2]
[1] Special: Hakkon connects to Ameridan.
PC: You said that the Jaws of Hakkon first tried binding their god in mortal form hundreds of years ago?
Svarah: What of it?
PC: In our search for Inquisitor Ameridan, we learned that he came here to fight a great dragon 800 years ago… A dragon that came from the mountains with Avvar warriors to attack the lowlands.
Svarah: (Laughs.) Your last Inquisitor must have fought well to stop Hakkon himself! [3]
[3] Subsequent dialogue options:
Investigate: This is all right with you? [4]
Investigate: Does this happen often? [5]
[4] Investigate: This is all right with you?
PC: You're not bothered by the idea that our Inquisitor killed your god?
Svarah: He didn't kill him. That would have been easier. Whatever fight your Inquisitor finished, the Jaws of Hakkon started. I find no fault with a warrior defending his people. [Back to 3]
[5] Investigate: Does this happen often?
PC: Do the Avvar gods take mortal form on a regular basis?
Svarah: No. The gods belong in the land of dreams. Whether it is their wish—or some augur's—that brings them here, battle-tears will be shed. The skalds say the Lady of the Skies took mortal form when Tyrdda Bright-Ax first led the Avvar to the mountains. They say many things about Bright-Ax and the Lady. [Back to 3]
[2] General: Let us begin the assault.
PC: I'm ready to attack the Jaws of Hakkon.
Svarah: Good. They will pay the blood-price for what they have done.
(Kenric and Harding enter the Thane's hall.)
Svarah: Your skald and your scout are here. We can plan the assault.
Kenric: Oh, I like the sound of "skald." It's more dramatic than "professor."
Harding: (Coughs.)
Kenric: Yes, well. Everything we've found about Inquisitor Ameridan suggests that he never emerged from that Tevinter fortress.
Svarah: If that is where your Inquisitor defeated Hakkon, that is where the Jaws of Hakkon must perform the rite to free him. [6]
[6] Dialogue options:
General: We can stop them. [7]
General: Or hopefully not. [8]
General: We have a target. [9]
[7] General: We can stop them.
PC: Inquisitor Ameridan saved the lowlands from an Avvar invasion. We cannot do any less. [10]
[8] General: Or hopefully not.
PC: Ideally, we stop them before that. I'd rather not fight an Avvar god if we don't have to. [10]
[9] General: We have a target.
PC: Good. We know where to strike. [10]
[10] Harding: You really have no problem with us killing your god?
Svarah: Gods cannot be reborn until they die. (Laughs.) Hakkon needs a good rebirthing.
Harding: If you say so.
Svarah: With its ice-wall melted, the fortress is open to attack. We must strike soon, before our foes recover.
Harding: They're already trying. I've got most of our forces defending the shrine from Hakkonites who want to restore the wall. [11]
[11] Dialogue options:
General: We're going to take losses. [12]
General: I'm open to ideas. [13]
General: A siege seems unlikely. [14]
[12] General: We're going to take losses.
PC: The fortress was built to be defensible. It's going to cost us a lot of people to take it.
Svarah: Why? [15]
[13] General: I'm open to ideas.
PC: If anyone has suggestions, now is the time.
Svarah: What gives you fear, Inquisitor? Is this not the battle you wanted? [15]
[14] General: A siege seems unlikely.
PC: We don't have time to drag siege equipment through the forest to take down those walls.
Svarah: A siege? Bah! We have no need of rock-throwers and rams. [15]
[15] Kenric: I am no warrior, but with Lady Harding's forces defending the shrine and no way to breach the walls...?
Svarah: (Laughs.) Lowlanders. Why not climb the walls?
Harding: Your warriors can get over those walls before the Hakkonites stop them?
Svarah: This is not a war, Stone-Daughter. This is a raid. We strike at night, clad lightly. We climb the wall and open the gate from inside. [16]
[16] Dialogue options:
General: We are in your debt. [17]
General: I guess this is our plan. [18]
General: Let's move. [19]
[17] General: We are in your debt.
PC: If Stone-Bear Hold can open the gates, we would be grateful.
Svarah: The Jaws of Hakkon have been bugs in my bedroll for months, Inquisitor. We owe you thanks. [20]
[18] General: I guess this is our plan.
PC: Well, then. Unless anyone has something that sounds easier than climbing the walls...?
Svarah: I would not offer what I could not give. It will be done. Perhaps my climbers will earn themselves a legend-mark! [20]
[19] General: Let's move.
PC: Agreed. How soon can we attack?
Svarah: As soon as the sun sets, Inquisitor. This will be a good night. [20]
[20] Harding: Inquisition forces will feign weakness near the shrine. That will draw some of them away from the fortress.
Kenric: Not too many, I hope.
Svarah: Yes. Save some for us!
Harding: (Nods.)
Part 2: Assault the gate.
(The Inquisition’s soldiers and the warriors from Stone-Bear Hold gather in front of the gate of the Tevinter ruin.)
Parve: Right, Inquisitor. Hask and I will climb over.
Hask: I'll be there to catch Parve when he slips.
Parve: 'Course you will. You'll be behind me, after all.
(These two are the same Avvar men who participated in the Test of the Lady - the climbing contest used for settling disputes - that took place when the Inquisition first arrived in Stone-Bear Hold - see “Avvar Allies” main quest.)
Hask (to Parve): 'Ware the guard.
Parve: I've got him.
(The Avvar sneak ahead and start climbing over the walls of the fortress. Meanwhile, the Inquisition leads the assault from the front to distract the Hakkonites.)
Male Hakkonite: There! It's the lowlanders!
Female Hakkonite: Kill the Inquisitor! Death to her/his hold, for Hakkon's glory!
(Storvacker joins the fight.)
Party comments:
Varric: Storvacker, good to see you again!
Dorian: And we have a bear. Hooray!
Sera: Eat them, not us! Got it?
Cole: I'm happy to see you, too!
Svarah Sun-Hair: Greetings from Stone-Bear Hold, you shit-eating goat-lovers!
(The climbers continue scaling the walls.)
Parve: Watch your grip. It slips a bit.
Hask: Bah, you can't grip anything more challenging than your mother's teat.
Parve: (Grunts.) I was aiming for his throat. We'd best hurry.
Hask: Nicely done.
Parve: Be ready, Inquisitor!
(The gate is opened from the inside by the climbers from Stone-Bear Hold.)
Hask: Lady take you, goat-lovers!
Parve (to the Inquisitor): As you please, Inquisitor.
Hask: I'd not tarry. More will be coming.
(Walk through the gate and defeat the Hakkonites defending the battlements.)
Party comments:
Cassandra: The Avvar were true to their word!
Iron Bull: Nice work, Stone-Bear Hold!
Blackwall: Your Avvar friends pulled it off!
Varric: Our Avvar friends came through!
Svarah Sun-Hair: We have your back, Inquisitor! Fight well!
Part 3: Find Inquisitor Ameridan’s resting place.
(Walk towards the Tevinter ruin.)
Party comments:
Cassandra: No sign of the dragon. It must be in there.
Cole: She doesn't want to be him. He doesn't want to be chained. Tied together, wracked and raging.
Solas: The ritual must be underway. There is a great deal of magical energy coming from the bottom of the crater.
(There are ice wards in the field between the gate and the main building. If destroyed, they freeze everyone in the vicinity.)
Party comments:
Dorian: Watch the wards! We can't afford to be slowed down!
Vivienne: Watch out for the ice wards! We cannot let them slow us!
Sera: Pissing freezing magic!
Solas: Beware the wards! They will sap your strength!
(An ice ward is destroyed.)
Party comments:
Cassandra: The ward is destroyed!
Iron Bull: How do you like that, frosty?
Blackwall: That should end the wards!
Cole: You can't freeze us!
(Enter the Old Temple. The interior is covered in frost.)
Party comments:
Vivienne: This frost is magical in nature. If we do not make haste, we will freeze to death.
Cassandra: This cold is magical in origin. It will kill us if we do not hurry.
Sera: We stay here, our bits will snap off. Get moving.
Solas: The cold is magical. It will kill us if we do not hurry.
Cole: This isn't real, but it still hurts. We have to be fast.
Dorian: Even colder than usual. This is magical. We need to keep moving.
Varric: This isn't natural. We'd better hurry, unless you like freezing to death.
(Stay by the fire to warm up.)
Party comments:
Sera: Better, right? Might even keep our toes.
Iron Bull: (Grunts.) Cold's not so bad here.
Varric: The cold isn't so bad here.
Cole: Yes. False cold, but the real fire keeps it away.
(Gurd Harofsen begins the ritual.)
Party comments:
Varric: We should probably hurry. There's no good kind of crazy ritual chanting.
Vivienne: They are performing the ritual. I suggest we hurry.
Solas: We must hurry. The ritual to free the spirit of Hakkon is underway.
Dorian: Sounds like they've already started the ritual. Best hurry, then.
(Gurd chants the Song of savage Hakkon.)
Sing the song of savage Hakkon, born in battle, bloody bladed.
Wintersbreath to wrack the lowlands, cold to cut and kill the hated.
Meet the might of Mountain-Father, crush the creed of Korth the callow.
Leave the Lady lost and lonely, scour the skies of spirits sallow!
Gurd Harofsen, called the Cutter, wyvern-slayer, lowland-bane
Begs of Hakkon, bring his body bloody blessings, cold and pain!
(The chant ends.)
Party comments:
Vivienne: The barbarian is allowing himself to be possessed by Hakkon!
Solas: The Hakkonite leader is calling the spirit of Hakkon into his own body!
Varric: Harofsen's summoning Hakkon into himself!
Dorian: He's summoning Hakkon into his own body!
Cassandra: Is he insane?
Iron Bull: Who does that? That's a terrible idea!
Blackwall: He's mad!
Sera: Don't care. Stupid gets arrows.
(A dragon can be seen in the distance.)
Party comments:
Sera: There's the dragon! It's... frozen or something?
Cole: The dragon. She's stuck, still, a statue. Hakkon is angry inside her.
Varric: There's the Hakkon dragon! At least it's not moving yet.
Iron Bull: There's the dragon! Long as it holds still like that, we should be all right.
(The fight begins. Gurd continues the ritual while being protected by Hakkonites.)
Party comments:
Vivienne: Hakkon is invulnerable until we disrupt those around him!
Solas: We cannot harm Hakkon until the ritual is disrupted!
Cassandra: We must disrupt the ritual first! Then Hakkon can be harmed!
Dorian: We have to take out the others! We can't hurt Hakkon until they're out!
(Gurd summons the spirit of Hakkon into himself and transforms into a revenant.)
Gurd: Face me and die, Inquisitor! Your predecessor could not stand against me. You shall fall as well! I am the cold bite of winter! I am Hakkon reborn! Death to the lowlanders!
(The revenant casts powerful ice spells.)
Party comments:
Sera: Ranged, right? Too cold up close!
Cassandra: The cold is worse near the creature!
Blackwall: The cold gets worse the closer you are!
Iron Bull: Careful! Cold's worse up close!
(During the fight, the revenant freezes the braziers as he loses health.)
Party comments:
Vivienne: He's putting out the fires!
Varric: Watch yourself! He's putting out the fires!
Dorian: The damn thing's dousing the fires!
Solas: Be careful! He's dousing the fires!
(Next quest - Ameridan's End: Talk to Ameridan)

Song of the Dragonborn- Chapter 3: The Companions
-0-0-0-0-0-
Thomas wanted to hide in on himself more than anything else, him, dragonborn!? And to head out to these graybeards? He shook his head, it sounded crazy, it was downright dizzying to think about. Capable as he was, he wasn’t a hero! Thomas bit his lower lip, sure he could fight alright, but he only got lucky with that dragon. How was he suppose to be anything more than just a guy on his way to Solitude.
He supposed he could just head to Solitude and put this whole thing behind him. But, something twisted in his gut at that. The thought of Helgan, of all those people. Thomas shook his head again, if he was to make this journey he wanted to be ready. He wasn’t hiding, just training.  His eyes gazed from the bridge to the upside down boat of what was known as the Companions. Mayhaps? Taking a breath he made his way down the stairs heading over the bridges to the area. He gazed up at the building, taking a breath as he walked up and inside into the comfortable air inside. The scent of food made his mouth water, he hadn’t ate much on his travels but he shook his head trying not to think about it.
To his left he watched two people get into a fist fight, and felt very awkward. As he watched someone tapped his shoulder, he turned to see a women, long red hair and war paint on her face. She was clearly nord by her features, but she also looked very capable.  “New blood eh?” she asked with her arms crossed at him, as if judging him. Her eyes looking him up and down.
Thomas shifted a bit, “Er, yes.” he said finding his confidence again, as he met her gaze evenly. She laughed a bit at that, “Bravery, good, you’ll need it here. I’ll take you to Kodlak, he’ll see about you.” she told him with a wolfish grin on her face.
Nodding to her, Thomas followed quietly after her and away from the large group around the table into the lower parts. She walked with her head high and shoulders back, intimidating to say the least. Thomas mostly just liked to stay low and not say much.  They neared a door at the far end, “He’s in there, we’ll see if he proclaims you new-blood?” she said looking him up and down before turning and leaving.
Giving her a strange look as she left, Thomas entered the room, lingering in the back as he heard two people having a conversation. He only really caught bits and pieces of it, trying not to eavesdrop. Something about ‘call of the blood’ and ‘not everyone is happy’ or at least that’s what it sounds like.
“Ah a stranger comes to our halls!” Thomas looked up to see a man with long white and gray hair in heavy armor with wolves on it. His beard was neatly tied as his eyes gazed into his very being.
Straightening up, “Hello, my name is Thomas.” he said politely, “I’m here to join The Companions.” he said with as much confidence as he could muster. From what he saw with that nord women they valued bravery and confidence. But, he was also taught to respect elders. While Thomas didn’t think everyone of old age was deserving of respect, he could just sense this man, Kodlak clearly, was one who deserved it.
“Would you now?” Kodlak hummed at him hand stroking his beard as he gazed at Thomas up and down much like how the red head did. He then nodded slowly, “Yes, perhaps, a certain strength of spirit.” The man he was talking to huffed in disbelief. “Now you can’t be serious Kodlak, I’ve never even heard of this man.”
Kodlak waved his hand, “It matters not Vilkas. Some come here to seek their Fame. Some men and women come just for the thrill of the fight. Others just are famous and wish to join. It matters not, so long as his blade arm is strong and his heart is true.” he commented calmly then turned to Thomas, “Tell me boy, how good is your arm?” he asked.
Thomas shifted a bit at that, “I have alot to learn, sir.” he admits quietly to him. “It’s why I seek to join.” Kodlak nodded to that with a pleased smile, “Good good, you will learn well then so long as you keep your head on a swivel and eyes to Sovenguard.” he promised looking to Vilkas, “Vilkas, why not test out this new-blood. See where we can place him to train with one of the higher members.” he suggested to the man with deep amber eyes and shaggy black hair.
With a nod and hum of confirmation he got up and motioned with his chin for Thomas to follow. Giving a look at that as Kodlak just nodded to him, Thomas turned and followed quietly. Vilkas seemed like a quiet type, didn’t speak as they walked out just giving nods to anyone they passed. And out they went to the courtyard. Thomas felt eyes on him as they got to the yard out back.
“So the old man wants me to test you, see where you’ll stand for training with us to become a Companion.” Vilkas huffed at that, gazing at Thomas “Two-handed it seems, duel weapons.” he nodded pulling out a shield and sword. “Alright then, let’s see, take a few swings at me. Don’t worry, I can take it.” he chuckled at Thomas, there was no taunting, just a statement.
Thomas nods sobering up, he wouldn’t be meek, this was nothing compared to a dragon after all. Pulling out his weapons, he gripped his leather handles, the weight of them in his hands. And then he lashed out. Vilkas moved fast, but Thomas remained on edge. He turned from the shield that almost bashed his arm, catching it with his blade as the ring of metal was heard. Vilkas laughed at that, as Thomas skidded back and they ran at each other again. Thomas grunted at the force that hit him, but he dug in his feet as Vilkas tried to push him back. The sword reared back, Thomas gazed up then turned sharply as it barely missed his shoulder. He moved his blade down and caught the blade under his. The other holding the shield with the other blade as they held there.
Gazing at him and then grinning, Thomas’s eyes widen as Vilkas moved his foot and knocked Thomas down. The blade at his neck, he gazed up as Vilkas laughed. “Well new-blood you fight well, a bit sloppy on form, but you have fire. You’re still a whelp though, so just do as we tell you.” he mused with a grin, showing sharp teeth. “Here, run a few tasks to cool off from our sparing session.” he handed Thomas his hand, helping him up, then handed him a sword. “Tell Eorlund, at the Sky Forge, it needs sharpen.”
Panting a bit and nodding, Thomas got his sword putting them away in their sheaths. Vilkas nodded patting Thomas’s shoulder firmly before heading to set down for a bit.  Thomas turned and near flushed at the crowd that had gathered to watch their small sparing session. Taking a breath he turned away and walked up to what he knew to be Sky Forge now, trying to ignore the rush in his blood to fight again. That was normal, ever since he was little, the rush to fight and to win. His dad said he had a warriors spirit, but Thomas wasn’t sure that was it.
Climbing up the stairs, the sun high in the sky, Thomas saw a man working the metal at the forge. Brows creased in concentration and eyes narrowed as the hammer strikes the hot metal. Then, as if sensing him, they turned to him and hum. “What brings you here?” he asked, his muscles flexing as he struck the metal again.  Thomas felt even more awkward about social interaction, “Well, Vilkas gave me his sword to bring to you.” he said holding it out.
Eorlund nodded to that as he took it, “Newcommer then?” he asked with a knowing look at him. Thomas just nodded feeling small inside, this was a bad idea. “Eh, don’t worry about it. They all were whelps once, they just don’t like to talk about it.” he told Thomas clasping his shoulder in a encouraging way. “If Kodlak says you have heart, then I’ll trust his judgement.”
“Thank you.” Thomas felt like some weight was off his shoulders, like Kodlak, Eorlund gave off a wise vibe, but capable in a fight. “Not sure really why I thought to join, figured if I am to make it in Skyrim I’ll need to be better at fighting.”
The blacksmith nodded, “A wise thought, your blade is the only think that stand between you and your enemy. Remember boy, nothing here will show mercy to you, so you shouldn’t either. Between creatures in the forests and people who’d slit your throat for a quick buck, you need to be ready.” he grunted out to Thomas as he treating the blade. “You’ll learn much here, and soon have songs sung about you.” he joked lightly at the last part.
Thomas felt himself smile a bit at that, Eorlund gave him a look. “Remember this though son, every man here is his own, and every women her own. No body rules a Companion. Kodlak is in charge, but a true leader, hasn’t been seen this Ysgamor.” he told Thomas in his gruff tones.
Turning to his blade to be cooled, Thomas watched for a long moment, Eorlund then grunted making him jump. “Interested in blacksmithing?” he asked knowingly with a side eyes. “Er well... yeah kind of.” Thomas admits to him sheepishly. Eorlund huffed, “Be firm with your words.” he said sharply to him, “But, here’s a deal for you. My wife is in grieving, I should be getting back to her. But, I have to finish Aela’s shield. Come back here when the sun is near the right of the city, and if you can deliver it for her, I’ll teach you smithing.” he offer to him.
Thomas blinked at that then nodded, “I can do that sir.”  Eorlund snorted, “Sir? Formal of you, just call me Eorlund or, if you want to be formal, Gray-mane is fine.” he told him. “For now, get to know the city, you look clueless walking about.”
Flushing, was it that obvious? But nodding, he left, walking down the stairs and frowned to himself. Get to know the city? Well, he was Thane now, at least only few knew of that, so he supposed he should. Patton did say to hit him up for a tour if he wanted it. So, he supposed first place to find him would be at the Warmaidens. Walking to the area on the path he always took. Walking up to see  Adrianne working, she looked at him and gave a kind smile. “Well it’s good to see you again, I see your quest is complete.” she laughed heartily, “What do you need my friend?” she asked.
“I was looking for Patton, seeing if he could show me around the city.” Thomas said, feeling more at ease as he knew of her better than most here.  Adrianne nodded to that, “He’s just inside, and I’m sure he’ll love to.” she told Thomas looking at him. “Thomas.” he looked at her before walking in. “I need to ask a favor of you.”
Frowning in thought he walked over to her from the doorway. “You see,” she started. “This is the first time I’ve seen Patton really take to liking a newcommer, sure he’s friendly, but he’s also a very wary person of new people. Took me and my husband a year to get him to open up to us about his past. However, he’s asked around about you to the guards. And, I ask of you this, be a good friend to that boy. He needs someone to rely on in this world.” she told him firmly.
Thomas blinked at that in shock, before smiling at her. “I will certainly try.” he promised. Adrianne nodded, “Good, just keep in mind, you hurt him and my husband and I will have your head.” she said seriously. Thomas looked worried at that with a strained and worried smile.
“You both really care about him.” Thomas said with a nervous laugh. Sighing heavily, she nodded to that looking wistful. “We’ve always wanted a child. But, taking a blow to the stomach, though healed, didn’t help my chances.” she admits in a sad tone. “The boy came here, lost, confused, and wanting to learn. It wasn’t a challenge, my husband took a shining to him as much as I did. We can only hope to ready him for the world of being a merchant. This was 3 years ago.” she told Thomas.
He gazed at her for a long moment as she smiled, “Why am i telling you this? Because I think you’ll be a good influence on him, provided by husband is right about you.” she chuckled shaking her head. “You best head inside before you miss him.” Nodding, and saying his thanks, he walked inside to find Patton stocking things on shelves. Patton turned to speak but then beamed, “Thomas!” he said happily to him bouncing over. “What you need, the sword doing you well?” he asked.
Thomas smiled brightly, “Yup, I’ve joined the Companions.” he said to him. Patton’s eyes sparkled at that, “Really, that’s great!”
“More than great, Patton, I pegged you for a warrior when you walked in that day.” Ulfberth laughed as he came in with some shields setting them out on the tables. “To run with the Companions is a honorable path.” he told Thomas with a pleased nod. “I’m sure, still learning though and I have freetime.” Thomas turned to Patton, “As I’m a bit unsure, care to show me around the city?” he asked.
Patton smiled looking to Ulfberth, who chuckled, “Go on, I should be good here. Be back by dinner though.” he tells him, giving to them half a loaf of bread to snack on. Patton waved to him smiling happily as he pulled Thomas outside.
“I’ll be back before sundown Adrianne!” he said quickly as she beamed waving to them before going back to work. Patton pulled Thomas forward to an unknown area he hadn’t been in. “This is the City’s Wind Distract, most people live here and near the Cloud Distract, where Jorrvaskr is The Compainons, is the Underkeep, where the dead are housed.” Patton explained happily as he pulled Thomas along pointing out houses and who lives there and a bit of history.
Thomas was smiling as he listened to Patton talk taking up to the market place next as he waved to some of the stales. As they neared one though, with a older women who was talking to two men who were heckling her about her son. “Well we know where he is, he’s a prisoner in my cellar.” one sneered at her, “Face it old women, you’re son is dead, died a traitor to the Empire!” he said.
Something burned him as he near snarled. He walked over to them, eyes cold as Patton stared in shock and worry at that. “While I don’t have a stake in the war,” he began, “it gives one no right to bully the elderly.” he said getting near them with a cold look. They turned to him, “Oh? And what do you care? Another Stormcloak?” the older man asked with a sneer at Thomas.
“I’m just a man getting by, as much as any other in these times.” Thomas crossed his arms, mimicking Vilkas’s posture he saw. “And I don’t think your ancestors would take well to knowing that you spend your time picking on those older than you and wiser at that.” Opening his mouth to retort, but then snapping it closed. Something about this boy felt... strong, as if he was staring at the maws of a mighty dragon. Instead he scoffed, “Whatever boy, mind you tongue or it’ll be cut off.” he jeered before stalking off with his partner.
Thomas watched them leave, most had been staring at them, but some were nodding at Thomas’s words. Something in him gave a pleased hum to see the weak ones run. He then smiled and relaxed turning to the lady behind the stall. “Sorry about that Ma’ma, I don’t like people who bully others, regardless of their status.” he said to her looking at the jewelry she had on display.
Her wary face smiled at him, “Thank you young man, good to see Skyrim still has fine people in it.” she then sighed. “It’s not the first time this has happened to me though “Call me Fralia, I have seen you around here.” she mused to him then smiled brightly. “Ah Patton, showing this nice man around?” she asked.
Patton, once over his shock of Thomas standing up to a Battle-born, “Yes Fralia, this is Thomas.” he said with a smile.  “Well be sure to come back and chat, I do enjoy company.” she said to him with a smile as Thomas nodded waving to her as Patton pulled him along.
“Woah, you’re fearless!” Patton said once away. Thomas gave him a look, “How so?” he asks curiously to that. “You stood up to the Battle-borns, only few do so. They are powerful, money, and were here when Whiterun was founded.” Patton tells him softly.
For a moment, dread pooled in Thomas’s gut, but he pushed it down. “Regardless Patton, it still gives no right to treat people like that.” he tells him. Patton then nodded to that, “Very true, but not many would say it out loud. Many here, even those on the Empire side, dislike their way of bullying people. The Gray-manes, though at odds with them, I haven’t ever seen them start the fights.” he mused.
Nodding to that as they came near the tree, Patton looked upset again. “Something wrong?” Thomas asked him worriedly. “Ah, nothing.” Patton said with a wave of his hand, Thomas gave him a pointed look as Patton shifted “Well... this tree didn’t always look like this, when I came here it was very alive.” he said sadly.
“Shame isn’t it.” Thomas turned to see a healer prestress walk to them. “Hello Patton, showing the new guy around? Rumors already spread about him.” she said with a soft smile.
Patton smiled, “Thomas, this is Diancie Pure-Spring, she is a prestress of Kynareth and taught me how to better my healing magic.” Diancie laughed at that lightly, “Please Patton, you have Kynareth’s blessing with you, she has a path for you for sure.” she smiled at Thomas. “I noticed you asking about Gildergreen here.”
Thomas nodded as she sighed sadly, “Sadly we don’t know why it is dying, possibly she is too far from her mother, Eldergleam.” she told him sadly, “Many used to come here, but a dead tree isn’t really a sign of healing, huh?”
He frowns at that, “I suppose not, any way to save it?” he asks worriedly, knowing many people held religion close in this area of the empire.  “Sadly, unless we find sap from the original tree, it’s hopeless. And Eldergleam isn’t easy to reach, only one blade could do such a thing. But... hagravens own it.” she shivered a bit in fear and disgust.
She then waved her hand, “Worry not, I’m sure Kynareth will show us what to do.” she tells them then turns, “I best head back, come by some time again Patton, many of the wounded have asked about you. You seem to brighten their day.” Diancie smiled at him as Patton nods before taking her leave.
Thomas then looked up, “I best head back, Eorlund wants me to take a shield to Aela.” he tells Patton. The other nods with a bright smile, that doesn’t quiet reach his eyes. “Sure thing Thomas, see you soon.” he says. Thomas walks off but notices Patton looking at the tree sadly.
He hoped his new friend would be alright.

Vincent and 17. Audience
This is dipping into the Avvar AU we’ve been yelling at the other for a few weeks or so now where Rolfe and Vincent get Happy Childhoods growing up together in Stone-Bear Hold and Vincent gets heart eyes whenever he looks at Inquisitor Trevelyan.
One Word Prompts
“What am I up against?”
Vincent crossed his arms in front of his chest and frowned.  “Movran the Under. His son was…”
Roz pressed her fingers to her forehead to stave off a headache.  “The Avvar we fought in the Fallow Mire.”
“One and the same.  He’s a little upset about the death of his son.”
Rolfe snorted, pulling away from the shadows of the alcove he had been lurking behind as he tried to listen to the gathered crowd.  “Upset is a bit of an understatement.  He threw a goat at your keep.”
Roz noticed the way both men winced.  Her headache grew.  “He threw a what at my castle?”
“It’s considered an insult to sully a hold’s walls with goat’s blood,” Vincent explained.  “You could equate it to a noble throwing a gauntlet at an opponent,.”
Roz’s eyes widened.  “And what am I supposed to do, pick it up?”
Rolfe smirked. “It would be something to see you enter the Trials of the Lady, but…”
Vincent gave his brother a sharp glare. “But you’re on your home turf and have captured him as your prisoner. You can try him as you would any other person, Avvar or no.”
Roz halfheartedly wanted to ask what the trials Rolfe had mentioned were, but she caught sight of Josephine.  Her ambassador looked slightly more stressed than usual, and Roz felt like she needed to go out into the Great Hall to get this over with as quickly as possible.
“What should I do?”
Vincent looked down at the hand Roz had placed on his arm and his heart swelled at the idea that she had sought his counsel before any of her advisors. “We Avvar hold loyalty to our hold over loyalty to our blood.  Movran’s son put his entire clan in danger of your retribution by attacking your agents. Once the two of you speak, Movran won’t try to kill you to avenge his death.” He glanced out at the audience that was shuffling in.  “There are several things you could do, but we have a thing about killing people from Tevinter.”
Roz seemed to understand where he was coming from. “The Venatori are from Tevinter.”
“You’ll get rid of Movran’s clan and gain an ally to fight on that front.  Two birds, one stone.”
“And you think that he’ll agree to this?”
Vincent put his hand over hers.  “I think you underestimate the general dislike my people have of Tevinter, Lass.”  He put his other hand on her shoulder and gave her a reassuring smile.  “Go out there and listen to his case.  Offer exile to Tevinter and if it doesn’t pan out the way we think it will, dismiss him.”
She nervously chewed on her lip.  “And if it all goes pear-shaped?”
“Then Rolfe and I will step in, as one Avvar to another.”
Rolfe winked. “We can be diplomatic when we have to, although I’m not climbing any mountains near here if he does demand a Trial.”
Vincent rolled his eyes.  “Don’t worry, that’s what I’m here for.” He squeezed her hand.  “It will be fine, you’re going to be successful.”
Roz smiled up at him and squeezed his hand back.  “How could I not, when I have you cheering me on?”
Vincent watched as she took a breath and squared her shoulders before stepping out of the hallway leading towards the Great Hall.  It was one of the many things he admired about her: she could show how unsure she was in private one moment and in the next hide all her insecurities behind a mask of confidence that she may not completely feel.  That bit of steel had been coming out more and more as she accepted the leadership role she had been thrust into and he couldn’t help but be proud of her.
He was shaken from his thoughts by an elbow to his back. “You’ve been grinning like an idiot for the last five minutes,” Rolfe whispered.
“I have not.”
“Sure you haven’t.  Did you even hear a thing that was discussed, or were you so starry-eyed at the fact Roz asked you for advice that you missed out on Movran accepting the move to Tevinter?”
Vincent felt a flush creep up the back of his neck.  He hadn’t heard, he’d been too preoccupied recalling the warm way her hand had felt in his. “Good, then it went as planned.  One less thing for her to worry about.”
“And potentially one less thing for Stone-Bear Hold to worry about.  We should probably write Thane Sun-Hair to let her know.”
“You’re right.  You should get on it.”
“I was going to suggest you get on writing the report, but I guess I’ll do it since you’re so obviously preoccupied with mentally undressing a certain redhaired —aaaah!” Rolfe’s teasing was cut short by a muffled yelp.  “Snow, really?”  He glared at his brother as he quickly shook out his shirt, large clumps of ice and snow falling out the back of it.
Vincent conjured up another handful and held it threateningly towards Rolfe. “It’s the fastest way by far to get you to shut up.”
Rolfe kicked the clumps of ice on the ground out of the way so no one would slip on them.  “I still don’t see why the two of you are dancing around the other when it’s so obvious that you care about her and she has feelings for you.  Tears of the Lady, you’ll never get past holding hands if you keep this pace up.”
Vincent took one last look into the Great Hall and managed to catch Roz’s eye as she spoke with Josephine.  He couldn’t help the way his heart fluttered in his chest at the faint blush on her cheeks and the smile she gave him.  Maybe Rolfe was right: perhaps there was something there besides friendship and maybe he should act on his attraction, if only to test the water.
It still didn’t stop him from stuffing the newly made snow down his brother’s shirt again, purely on principle.

HASTENED the hardy one, henchmen with him, sandy strand of the sea to tread and widespread ways. The world's great candle, sun shone from south. They strode along with sturdy steps to the spot they knew where the battle-king young, his burg within, slayer of Ongentheow, shared the rings, shelter-of-heroes. To Hygelac Beowulf's coming was quickly told, -- that there in the court the clansmen's refuge, the shield-companion sound and alive, hale from the hero-play homeward strode. With haste in the hall, by highest order, room for the rovers was readily made. By his sovran he sat, come safe from battle, kinsman by kinsman. His kindly lord he first had greeted in gracious form, with manly words. The mead dispensing, came through the high hall Haereth's daughter, winsome to warriors, wine-cup bore to the hands of the heroes. Hygelac then his comrade fairly with question plied in the lofty hall, sore longing to know what manner of sojourn the Sea-Geats made. "What came of thy quest, my kinsman Beowulf, when thy yearnings suddenly swept thee yonder battle to seek o'er the briny sea, combat in Heorot? Hrothgar couldst thou aid at all, the honored chief, in his wide-known woes? With waves of care my sad heart seethed; I sore mistrusted my loved one's venture: long I begged thee by no means to seek that slaughtering monster, but suffer the South-Danes to settle their feud themselves with Grendel. Now God be thanked that safe and sound I can see thee now!" Beowulf spake, the bairn of Ecgtheow: -- "'Tis known and unhidden, Hygelac Lord, to many men, that meeting of ours, struggle grim between Grendel and me, which we fought on the field where full too many sorrows he wrought for the Scylding-Victors, evils unending. These all I avenged. No boast can be from breed of Grendel, any on earth, for that uproar at dawn, from the longest-lived of the loathsome race in fleshly fold! -- But first I went Hrothgar to greet in the hall of gifts, where Healfdene's kinsman high-renowned, soon as my purpose was plain to him, assigned me a seat by his son and heir. The liegemen were lusty; my life-days never such merry men over mead in hall have I heard under heaven! The high-born queen, people's peace-bringer, passed through the hall, cheered the young clansmen, clasps of gold, ere she sought her seat, to sundry gave. Oft to the heroes Hrothgar's daughter, to earls in turn, the ale-cup tendered, -- she whom I heard these hall-companions Freawaru name, when fretted gold she proffered the warriors. Promised is she, gold-decked maid, to the glad son of Froda. Sage this seems to the Scylding's-friend, kingdom's-keeper: he counts it wise the woman to wed so and ward off feud, store of slaughter. But seldom ever when men are slain, does the murder-spear sink but briefest while, though the bride be fair![1] "Nor haply will like it the Heathobard lord, and as little each of his liegemen all, when a thane of the Danes, in that doughty throng, goes with the lady along their hall, and on him the old-time heirlooms glisten hard and ring-decked, Heathobard's treasure, weapons that once they wielded fair until they lost at the linden-play[2] liegeman leal and their lives as well. Then, over the ale, on this heirloom gazing, some ash-wielder old who has all in mind that spear-death of men,[3] -- he is stern of mood, heavy at heart, -- in the hero young tests the temper and tries the soul and war-hate wakens, with words like these: -- Canst thou not, comrade, ken that sword which to the fray thy father carried in his final feud, 'neath the fighting-mask, dearest of blades, when the Danish slew him and wielded the war-place on Withergild's fall, after havoc of heroes, those hardy Scyldings? Now, the son of a certain slaughtering Dane, proud of his treasure, paces this hall, joys in the killing, and carries the jewel[4] that rightfully ought to be owned by thee!_ Thus he urges and eggs him all the time with keenest words, till occasion offers that Freawaru's thane, for his father's deed, after bite of brand in his blood must slumber, losing his life; but that liegeman flies living away, for the land he kens. And thus be broken on both their sides oaths of the earls, when Ingeld's breast wells with war-hate, and wife-love now after the care-billows cooler grows. "So[5] I hold not high the Heathobards' faith due to the Danes, or their during love and pact of peace. -- But I pass from that, turning to Grendel, O giver-of-treasure, and saying in full how the fight resulted, hand-fray of heroes. When heaven's jewel had fled o'er far fields, that fierce sprite came, night-foe savage, to seek us out where safe and sound we sentried the hall. To Hondscio then was that harassing deadly, his fall there was fated. He first was slain, girded warrior. Grendel on him turned murderous mouth, on our mighty kinsman, and all of the brave man's body devoured. Yet none the earlier, empty-handed, would the bloody-toothed murderer, mindful of bale, outward go from the gold-decked hall: but me he attacked in his terror of might, with greedy hand grasped me. A glove hung by him[6] wide and wondrous, wound with bands; and in artful wise it all was wrought, by devilish craft, of dragon-skins. Me therein, an innocent man, the fiendish foe was fain to thrust with many another. He might not so, when I all angrily upright stood. 'Twere long to relate how that land-destroyer I paid in kind for his cruel deeds; yet there, my prince, this people of thine got fame by my fighting. He fled away, and a little space his life preserved; but there staid behind him his stronger hand left in Heorot; heartsick thence on the floor of the ocean that outcast fell. Me for this struggle the Scyldings'-friend paid in plenty with plates of gold, with many a treasure, when morn had come and we all at the banquet-board sat down. Then was song and glee. The gray-haired Scylding, much tested, told of the times of yore. Whiles the hero his harp bestirred, wood-of-delight; now lays he chanted of sooth and sadness, or said aright legends of wonder, the wide-hearted king; or for years of his youth he would yearn at times, for strength of old struggles, now stricken with age, hoary hero: his heart surged full when, wise with winters, he wailed their flight. Thus in the hall the whole of that day at ease we feasted, till fell o'er earth another night. Anon full ready in greed of vengeance, Grendel's mother set forth all doleful. Dead was her son through war-hate of Weders; now, woman monstrous with fury fell a foeman she slew, avenged her offspring. From Aeschere old, loyal councillor, life was gone; nor might they e'en, when morning broke, those Danish people, their death-done comrade burn with brands, on balefire lay the man they mourned. Under mountain stream she had carried the corpse with cruel hands. For Hrothgar that was the heaviest sorrow of all that had laden the lord of his folk. The leader then, by thy life, besought me (sad was his soul) in the sea-waves' coil to play the hero and hazard my being for glory of prowess: my guerdon he pledged. I then in the waters -- 'tis widely known -- that sea-floor-guardian savage found. Hand-to-hand there a while we struggled; billows welled blood; in the briny hall her head I hewed with a hardy blade from Grendel's mother, -- and gained my life, though not without danger. My doom was not yet. Then the haven-of-heroes, Healfdene's son, gave me in guerdon great gifts of price.
Note: [1] Beowulf gives his uncle the king not mere gossip of his journey, but a statesmanlike forecast of the outcome of certain policies at the Danish court. Talk of interpolation here is absurd. As both Beowulf and Hygelac know, -- and the folk for whom the Beowulf was put together also knew, -- Froda was king of the Heathobards (probably the Langobards, once near neighbors of Angle and Saxon tribes on the continent), and had fallen in fight with the Danes. Hrothgar will set aside this feud by giving his daughter as "peace-weaver" and wife to the young king Ingeld, son of the slain Froda. But Beowulf, on general principles and from his observation of the particular case, foretells trouble. Note: [2] Play of shields, battle. A Danish warrior cuts down Froda in the fight, and takes his sword and armor, leaving them to a son. This son is selected to accompany his mistress, the young princess Freawaru, to her new home when she is Ingeld's queen. Heedlessly he wears the sword of Froda in hall. An old warrior points it out to Ingeld, and eggs him on to vengeance. At his instigation the Dane is killed; but the murderer, afraid of results, and knowing the land, escapes. So the old feud must break out again. [3] That is, their disastrous battle and the slaying of their king. [4] The sword. [5] Beowulf returns to his forecast. Things might well go somewhat as follows, he says; sketches a little tragic story; and with this prophecy by illustration returns to the tale of his adventure. [6] Not an actual glove, but a sort of bag.

Avvar Allies
(Previous quest - What Yet Lingers: Find a way to get to the island)
Main questline: Avvar Allies
Making contact with the Avvar hold to the east could provide the Inquisition with useful allies.
Characters involved: Svarah Sun-Hair
(When you first enter Stone Bear-Hold, in the center of the settlement you see two people climbing a mountain wall and a crowd of Avvar cheering for them from below. You have to wait for the climbers to reach to the top before you can speak with the Thane. Svarah Sun-Hair can be seen on a platform opposite of the wall. Gurd Harofsen, the leader of the Jaws of Hakkon, is standing next to her.)
[SFX: Crowd cheering and shouting encouragement.]
Party comments:
Cassandra: What is that commotion?
Blackwall: Something exciting's happening.
Iron Bull: Sounds like a party. Or a fight.
Comments heard in the crowd:
Avvar man: Almost there, Parve!
Avvar woman: Move your legs, Hask!
Avvar man: He climbs like a fish!
Avvar woman: Shut your yap!
Gurd: Your climbers seem tired, Thane Sun-Hair. Poor hunting? Is your hold-beast well?
Svarah: We hunt as well as ever, Thane Harofsen.
Gurd: You would be safer under the shield of the Jaws of Hakkon.
Svarah: Hask Fishersen has taken victory in sight of the Lady of the Skies. Parve, you owe four rams to Hask, not three.
Hask: Hah!
Parve: Tyrdda's tits.
Svarah: Wind lift your oaths to the Lady of the Skies. And hand the rams over come sunrise.
Gurd: May your people be as strong as your hold-beast.
Party comments:
Solas: An interesting way to resolve a conflict.
Dorian: Well! That was entertaining.
Vivienne: What a delightfully rustic welcome.
(You can now approach Svarah and Gurd and speak with them.)
PC: We should speak with the thane.
Gurd: This is not my hold, lowlander. I will not shed your blood here. You will face the full might of the Jaws of Hakkon soon enough.
Svarah: We've heard of your arrival, lowlanders. Come share my fire, where we might speak.
(The screen fades and the scene continues in the Thane’s hall.)
Svarah: Inquisitor! I am Svarah Sun-Hair, Thane of Stone-Bear Hold. You have guest-welcome here.
(If the Inquisitor is a human warrior or rogue.) Your Inquisition has done much to heal the holes in the sky. We are grateful. [1]
(If the Inquisitor is a human mage.) The lowlanders have little love for their mages. I am impressed that you came to lead this Inquisition. [1]
(If the Inquisitor is a Dalish.) The lowlanders have little love for your Dalish clans. I am impressed that you came to lead their Inquisition. [1]
(If the Inquisitor is a dwarf.) Our people have long traded with Orzammar and your Carta. I'm pleased the Inquisition raised you up. [1]
(If the Inquisitor is a Qunari.) Few of our people have ever seen a Qunari. It is pleasing not to have to look down while we talk. [1]
[1] You and your people have come far from the safety of the lowlands. [2]
[2] Dialogue options:
General: We are not attacking. [3]
General: We noticed. [4]
General: Duty brought us here. [5]
[3] General: We are not attacking.
PC: We have not come to cause trouble in your home, Thane. [6]
[4] General: We noticed.
PC: Yes, given what we faced getting to your hold, we are nowhere near safety. [6]
[5] General: Duty brought us here.
PC: We have come on a mission. [6]
[6] We have learned that the last Inquisitor may have died here hundreds of years ago. We seek his body.
Svarah: Giving peace to the dead is a worthy quest. Any help we can offer is yours. Sadly, the Jaws of Hakkon will not offer so warm a welcome. You have met their thane, Gurd Harofsen. I wager you have crossed blades with the Jaws of Hakkon in the wilderness. If you would search this place for your Inquisitor's body, they will want you to pay in blood. [7]
[7] Dialogue options:
Investigate: What was the climbing contest? [8]
Investigate: Tell me of Stone-Bear Hold. [9]
Investigate: Tell me of the Jaws of Hakkon. [10]
Investigate: Why “Sun-Hair”? [11]
General: I need a boat. [12] (This option is available if you first spoke to Arvid Rolfsen, the fisherman who owns the boat by which you can access the Lady’s Rest island - see “What Yet Lingers: Find a way to get to the island” main quest. If you went directly to Stone-Bear Hold, this option will not appear, since Svarah grants you the guest-welcome that is recognized by Arvid - in that case, you don't have to go back to Svarah to gain her permission to use the boat.)
General: Will you fight the Hakkonites? [13]
General: Let's talk about your bear. [13b] (This option appears if the questions about Storvacker weren’t immediately asked in the dialogue tree [13] “Will you fight the Hakkonites?”. Therefore, this dialogue branch can be accessed either before or after completing "Storvacker Caged" main quest, which is going to affect Svarah's responses.)
General: Goodbye. [14]
[8] Investigate: What was the climbing contest?
PC: When I first entered your hold, there was a climbing contest of some sort. What was that?
Svarah: The test of the Lady. We use it to settle disputes when it is not clear who has the right of it. There are others. For the test of the Mountain-Father, you battle with verse while those who favor you hold you aloft. The test of Hakkon is battle, with blunted weapons. [Go to 15]
[15] Subsequent dialogue options:
General: That’s not fair. [16]
General: That seems reasonable. [17]
[16] General: That’s not fair.
PC: Those tests only prove who is faster or stronger, not who is right.
Svarah: Are your lowland trials perfect? Can the wealthy or quick-witted not succeed even when their claim is weak? [18]
[17] General: That seems reasonable.
PC: It seems as fair a way as any to decide such matters.
Svarah: In many cases, the law is clear. The tests are only for real disputes. [18]
[18] Svarah: As thane, I may guide the gods in finding who is worthy. I decide which test will settle the dispute. I may also ask a warrior whose claim is foolish to climb with stones strapped to his back. [Back to 7]
[6] Investigate: Tell me of Stone-Bear Hold.
PC: I'd like to hear more about Stone-Bear Hold.
Svarah: We are not the largest hold, but our warriors are strong and our singers are pretty. Ah, words are for boasting around the fireside. You should look yourself, if you will. [Back to 7]
[7] Investigate: Tell me of the Jaws of Hakkon.
PC: I'd like to know more about the Jaws of Hakkon.
Svarah: They are not the first hold to take that name. All have been foolish. What would you know of them? [Go to 19]
[19] Subsequent dialogue options:
Investigate: Why are they hostile? [20]
General: Tell me of the recent group. [21]
General: Tell me of the early group. [22]
[20] Investigate: Why are they hostile?
PC: What do the Jaws of Hakkon believe that makes them so angry?
Svarah: A wise man honors each god to its strength. Bjorn Reed-beard for fishing, Rilla of the Fireside for making babies… The Hakkonites care only for Hakkon Wintersbreath, god of war and winter. There is no evil in Hakkon. There are times to fight. But the Jaws of Hakkon care for nothing else. They raid, they fight. Eventually they die and their stories are forgotten. It is the way of things. [Back to 19]
[21] General: Tell me of the recent group.
PC: What can you tell me of the people now calling themselves the Jaws of Hakkon?
Svarah: They came here a few years ago, after the Blight took their hold. There was land enough for both, so we were friendly. We did not see their anger. Gurd Harofsen lost too many in his hold to darkspawn. He thought only of battle and war. To avenge a wrong is a good thing, but only a fool lights the world on fire to do it. [Back to 19]
[22] General: Tell me of the early group.
PC: You said that there were earlier groups known as the Jaws of Hakkon.
Svarah: Yes. Many ages ago. They thought of nothing but slaughter-glory. They attacked the lowlanders. [22a or 22b]
[22a] (If “Storvacker Caged” wasn’t completed.) Svarah: Your people fought back and destroyed them. They were fools.
[22b] (If “Storvacker Caged” was completed.) Svarah: Then they died and Hakkon's voice went silent. We did not know why until now.
[Back to 19]
[11] Investigate: Why “Sun-Hair”?
PC: How did you get the name "Sun-Hair"?
Svarah: I was born Svarah Janesdotten. For my legend-mark? I once fought a battle with my hair on fire.
PC: You lit your hair on fire?
Svarah: An enemy archer lit my hair on fire. I was locked shield-to-shield with a foe and had no time to douse it. It scared my foes. My hair was braided long enough that I could spare it. Stank worse than goat shit, though. [Back to 7]
[12] General: I need a boat.
PC: I was told I needed your permission to borrow a boat from the fishermen.
Svarah: Bah, Rolfsen. He worries like a scared baby goat. The boat is yours. Tell him I said so. [Back to 7]
[13] General: Will you fight the Hakkonites?
PC: The Hakkonites are attacking my people. I would welcome any assistance you could offer.
Svarah: Bathing my blade in the blood of the Hakkonites would be cause for a feast for most in this hold. The Hakkonites are fools and they have forgotten the old ways... but we have pledged peace with them. To attack with lowlanders at our side would make us oath-breakers. This is poor weather for me to ask that of my hold. [23]
[23] Subsequent dialogue options:
General: Can I change your mind? [24]
General: But...? [25]
General: What must I do? [26]
[24] General: Can I change your mind?
PC: I understand your concern. Is there anything I could do to help? [27]
[25] General: But...?
PC: I'm not hearing a "no," Thane Sun-Hair. [27]
[26] General: What must I do?
PC: What would change the weather? [27]
[27] Svarah: Among the Avvar, a hold draws strength from its hold-beast. They are as kin to us. When our hold-beast is strong and happy, there is joy. When it sickens and dies, it is an ill omen. Our bear, Storvacker, has not been seen in days. The hold fears for her. I cannot ask the hold to break peace-oaths unless Storvacker returns. [Go to 28]
[28] Subsequent dialogue options:
Investigate: How do you care for the bear? [29]
Investigate: So, about me and bears… [30]
Investigate: Are you looking for the bear? [31] (Unavailable if following from the branch [13b] after "Storvacker Caged" was completed.)
Investigate: You would break an oath? [32]
Investigate: Why does this bear matter? [33]
[29] Investigate: How do you care for the bear?
PC: Does Storvacker usually live in the hold? Does she stay in a pen, or...?
Svarah: (Disgusted noise.) Pens are for goats and chickens, not hold-kin. The Avvar are free. So must be our hold-beasts. Storvacker lives in a cave near the hold. She comes to visit if she wishes to see us. We bring her gifts of food. Not enough that she will not hunt for herself. [Back to 28]
[30] Investigate: So, about me and bears…
PC: Maybe I shouldn't bring this up, but bears and I traditionally do not get along. [Go to 30a or 30b]
[30a] (If “Storvacker Caged” wasn’t completed.)
Svarah: You have fought bears? (Laughs.) You lived! Good for you! Fear will keep you respectful, should you find Storvacker. You will be fine.
PC: So you're saying she's friendly?
Svarah: Ennnnnnnnh.... [Back to 28]
[30b] (If “Storvacker Caged” was completed.)
Svarah: Then it is good you rescued Storvacker. You are a friend now in her eyes. Perhaps she will speak well of you to other bears. You may find friends among the beasts. Or perhaps not. Bears do not always listen. [Back to 28]
[31] Investigate: Are you looking for the bear?
PC: Do you have members of the hold searching for Storvacker?
Svarah: The hold is already fearful. A great hunt for our hold-beast would show weakness to the Hakkonites. If she were dead, the augur would know. So the hunters watch for tracks. That is all we can do. [Back to 28]
[32] Investigate: You would break an oath?
PC: The way you asked us to help find Storvacker made it sound like you were willing to break your oath.
Svarah: I could say that Avvar hold all oaths sacred, that no true Avvar would break them. It would be a good lie. (Chuckles.) Lowlanders doubtless say the same of themselves. A cunning thane can find a hole in the tent of any promise, a place for the cold wind to sneak in. We are bone and blood. Oaths last until they are broken. [Go to 32a or 32b or back to 28]
[32a] Special: What will happen then? (If “Storvacker Caged” wasn’t completed.)
PC: If I find your bear and you break the oath, what happens to Stone-Bear Hold?
Svarah: Other holds share oaths with the Jaws of Hakkon. They are sworn to defend or avenge them. If the Hakkonites were friends, they would attack us. But they are friends to few. We will send offerings, trade and gifts, to pay the price of oath-breaking. The storm will pass. I do not do this lightly, Inquisitor, but the Hakkonites are tiresome. [Back to 28]
[32b] Special: But it is all right now? (If “Storvacker Caged” was completed.)
PC: Now that we know what the Hakkonites are doing, the oath no longer applies?
Svarah: Yes. Storvacker is kin of our hold. In binding her, they broke peace. We may strike as we will. Had they continued this foolish plan but left our hold-beast alone, it would be... less clear. We are lucky that Storvacker likes to find trouble. It keeps the hold busy. [Back to 28]
[33] Investigate: Why does this bear matter?
PC: I'm a little confused about why I have to find a bear in order to gain the support of your tribe.
(Alternatively, if Storvacker was already freed.) PC: Why was a bear so important to your hold?
Svarah: Storvacker is not "a bear." She is our hold-beast. She ties us to the gods.
(If the Inquisitor is a human.) Without her... your Maker has turned from you, has He not? It is as that. [34]
(If the Inquisitor is a Dalish.) Without her... I have heard your elf-gods turned from you? Is that not a bad thing? It is as that. [34]
(If the Inquisitor is a dwarf.) Without her... your kin under the mountains fear to lose the Stone? It is as that. [34]
(If the Inquisitor is a Qunari.) Without her... I do not know whether your people have gods, or if they can be stolen, but it is not good. [34]
[34] Svarah: I know more of this world than the world of spirits. Speak with our augur if you would know more. They are our gods, not yours. [Go to 34a or 34b]
[34a] (If “Storvacker Caged” wasn’t completed.) Svarah: For you, it is enough that Storvacker matters to us.
[34b] (If “Storvacker Caged” was completed.) For you, what matters is that you saved her and we are grateful.
[Back to 28]
[13b] General: Let's talk about your bear.
PC: I would like to talk about Storvacker, your hold-beast.
Svarah: What would you know? [Go back to dialogue branch 28] (Svarah’s replies change depending on the completion status of “Storvacker Caged”.)
[14] General: Goodbye.
PC: I will speak with you later.
(If you just learned about Storvacker’s disappearance) Svarah: Ask those in the hold about Storvacker. They may know something they have not told me.
(Otherwise) Svarah: Walk with the Lady's blessing.
[Exits the conversation]
(Next quest - Storvacker Caged)
