Everything was just one monotonous blur. Neverending, too. Or, at least, that was what it felt like. For the both of you. Luke and yourself. One day just bled into the next. Over. And over. And over. And over. But that melancholy feeling was only because you weren’t all that much fan of the City of Angels, and Luke only felt that down in the dumps because he was spending each and every day doing promotional events that were just repeats of each other; everything was the same. Of course, it was only a matter of time before that began to take a toll on him. But that was all. There weren’t any other underlying reasons for the numbness, melancholia, and monotony.

(It most definitely wasn’t because there was some sort of hole in their lives without each other, something that they couldn’t quite put their finger on, something that was just … missing. But even if that were the case, even if that were the Truth––it was only because they were best friends. That was all.)

There was no other contact between you and the gangly, blonde–haired man during the remainder of his stay. No how are you doing? or I might miss NYC and you or Chinese food when you get back? You and Luke had time–traveled back into the sixties and found the Cold War in the space that the two of you used to be. On some sort of bright side (if that even existed anymore), the band had received word from their new social media manager. Penelope was her name. Luke couldn’t stand her. (He knew that if you had to meet her, neither would you.) She wasn’t anything like you; immature humor flew right over her head, tweets were purely professional, she hated Chinese food and fortune cookies. But most importantly and above all, she was not you.

She didn’t have that familiar gleam in her eyes whenever she walked into the room. When she smiled, her lips were tight and pursed, and you could never see the bright whites of her teeth. Her hair was carefully cut and brushed, not resembling in the slightest your unkempt and messy bedhead hairstyle. Her laugh didn’t sound like an operatic melody.

She wasn’t you.

She never could be.

Saturday morning and they were flying back home stateside. Eight hours from FCO to JFK––a city which felt empty to Luke now. Maybe that was why when the plane landed at JFK and the other boys headed to baggage claim and the terminal exit, he, instead, bolted to baggage re–check and to Terminal 8 for a direct flight from JFK to LAX.

“If anyone asks, just tell them I went to go see family. I’ll be back tomorrow,” was the only thing Luke told the boys as he ran into the terminal.

(Calum now owed Michael $50 because it was quite possible they bet on the likelihood of Luke giving it all up and running to LAX because of you. For you.)

He was exhausted from the 4:00 a.m. wakeup call in Rome and the eight–hour flight from FCO to JFK, but he couldn’t make himself fall into any sort of slumber on the way from JFK to LAX. All he could think about was the way you talked to him on that phone call and how you felt like a stranger to him with the distance from here to there. Missing someone like this wasn’t something he was familiar with; he was never expecting to miss you like this. Never like this. This was raw and painful and hurting and aching and everything in between. This was heartbreaking.

So, when Luke landed at LAX and hailed a cab to take him straight to your headquarters and new office, all he could think about was the way things used to be. All he could think about was how he thought of that apartment as his own and how you weren’t an L.A. kind of girl (you were his little Big Apple girl; maybe there was a slight emphasis on the word his) and how the coffee cart outside of your apartment building knew the two of you by name and order (you: black coffee; him: vanilla latte with a dash of sugar) and how it all seemed so normal. With you.

If Luke were being honest (and he wasn’t, for clarification), he might just admit that there was something behind all of those thoughts about you. Something maybe just a little More. But that was a thought that Luke didn’t know what to do with or how to even think about it, so he let it slide. For now. Instead, all of this thinking about you was just because you were his best friend and their best social media manager.

The building was in downtown Los Angeles amongst the handful of high–rise buildings and skyscrapers in the middle of the desert. If he weren’t so focused on the mission at hand, he might have taken a moment to admire the sun sinking on the horizon. He might have taken a moment to admire everything. But you were on the twelfth floor of the building, and with a client pass, Luke was able to take the elevator all the way to your floor. It was a nice building, he wasn’t going to lie. That being said, it wasn’t anything like you. You weren’t a building or office kind of person. You were a real–life–living kind of person, the kind that did better work and more work in the field. This wasn’t you. It had never been you and, unless you had drastically changed since that day at JFK, it would never be you.

Arriving at the receptionist desk of the office, Luke flashed his best smile. “Looking for Y/N? Y/L/N?”

“You’re a client of hers?”

“Yeah, she’s my social media manager.” It might have been a stretch of the truth.

The receptionist cocked her head to the side. “You mean, PR specialist, right? She got promoted.”

PR specialist? What even was that? Luke nodded nonetheless. “Yeah, sorry. Just––where is she? I need to talk to her.”

“Office at the end of the hall. She’s headed to a meeting, though. Hurry up.”

Luke was gone before the receptionist could even finish her sentence. He had so many questions. What was a PR specialist? Why did you get promoted? Why did you move to L.A.? Why did you leave your city? Why were you acting like a complete stranger?

But the second he stepped into your office, all those questions vanished from his mind because there were you were. Two months later and there you finally were. The Los Angeles sunlight splashed through the window and onto your skin and you appeared golden––like a beloved statue of a Grecian goddess. Like his own Aphrodite. You were tanner since you left NYC, all that California sunlight finally getting to you. And when you finally turned around and saw him leaning against the glass walls of your office, you looked at him. You really looked at him. In the exact same way that you did that day at the airport when you weren’t quite sure what the right words were to say goodbye. You were Y/N, and he was Luke, and everything was back to Normal. Everything felt Right.

“What are you doing here?” You asked. This was exactly what you didn’t need. Luke. In your office. With those annoying eyes that seemed to just know everything you were thinking and feeling and hiding. And that crooked little happy smile. You really didn’t need any of that. (But you did. You really did.)

“Could ask you the same question.”

“What do you mean?”

Luke took a step closer. He smelled like peanuts and airports and airplanes and soap. “You hate Los Angeles, Y/N. What are you doing here? Why’d you leave NYC? Why’d you leave that apartment? You loved that apartment.”

“Not all of us get to be musicians traveling the world for a living.”

“I’ve missed you, you know.”

You sighed. The wistful one. The one that he remembered hearing whenever you would watch some sappy romantic comedy on TV. “Luke, I––”

“No. Let me talk for one second. You’re always talking and rambling on and on. I get to do that now. You’re my best friend, Y/N, and all of a sudden, you’re moving across the country and keeping huge secrets from me and not telling me anything, and I’m having to find it all out from the boys and your receptionist out there. That’s not like you, you know. We tell each other everything. I tell you everything. I know you said that it wasn’t because of the rumors and that you were fine with them, but I can’t help but connect the dots. I just … I miss us. I miss you traveling with us and going everywhere with us, and I miss that apartment of yours, and I miss that coffee cart and the Empire State Building and finding new places in different countries with you. I don’t know. I don’t know why I’m here. I don’t know why I thought you would listen. But you’re my best friend. I don’t know. I just didn’t want to lose that.”

It was quiet before you spoke. “I miss you, too, Luke. Of course, I do. It’s just––things are different now. I’m here now. It’s not the same.”

“But we are the same,” Luke responded. That word sounded good on his lips. We. So, he said it again. And again. And again. “We’re always the same. We’re Luke and Y/N. We’re always us.”

That was something that she had been needing to hear for far too long. That was something like what she wanted to say at the airport at JFK two months ago. That was something like what you wanted to hear when you called you from Rome the other day. That was something like what you always wanted to hear. So, you made a split–second decision to completely disregard whatever the executives from NYC had told you when you were banished.

“5608 Avenue F. Apartment 805. Meet me there. Two hours. I’m heading into a meeting.”

And there she was. The Y/N that Luke knew better than he knew himself. His best friend. (He thought.) It was just a small glimpse of her, but it was enough. For now. And as he walked out of her office, telling her that he would see her in two hours, he thought, for just a fraction of a second, that he could see that old gleam in her eyes again––the kind that was so very … you.

So, maybe that was when he finally pieced it all together. You. Him. That gleam. The past two months. The fact that he couldn’t remember the two months in Europe without you, but he could recall every single infinitesimal detail of the past ten minutes in this strange new office that had no details of you. Maybe he had a little more stake in all of his than what a “best friend” would have. Maybe there had always been a little Something More in it for him. For the next two hours, he wrestled with that thought and its implications and what it (read: you) all meant.

Known throughout the world as the King of Diamonds and Jeweler to the Stars, Harry Winston’s jewelry designs have been sought after by movie stars, royalty and heads of state since the 1920s. Showing exceptional talent as early as age 15 for spotting valuable stones, Harry left his parents small jewelry business in California and moved to New York City, where he became a legendary diamond and jewelry specialist.

The Winston name became synonymous with fine jewelry such as in the 1953 song “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” sung by Marilyn Monroe in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blonds and Lauren Weisberger’s best-seller Chasing Harry Winston. He was well known for lending his glitziest jewels to actresses to show off at the Academy Awards, but Harry was especially famous for his donation of the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian in 1958.

Harry owned the Hope Diamond for 10 years. Something else he owned for a long time: his jewel of a New York apartment with stunning views overlooking Central Park, which is now on the market, priced at $32.5 million.

One of New York’s premier white-glove addresses located directly across from the water basin in Central Park, 927 Fifth Avenue was built in 1917 in the Renaissance Revival style on 12 floors. Located on the entire 9th floor, Harry’s former apartment has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, formal living and dining rooms as well as a library, butler’s pantry, an eat-in kitchen, six fireplaces, 27 oversized windows, herringbone floors and 10’6’ ceilings. With over 5,000 square feet, rooms in the pre-war building are quite spacious, as befitted the period.

Designed by Warren & Wetmore, well known for designing New York’s Grand Central Terminal and many of the era’s largest hotels, including the Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu. Former residents of the building have included Paula Zahn and Mary Tyler Moore.

Though Winston died in 1978 at the age of 82, the Harry Winston salons are still the gold standard of jewelry stores with locations throughout the world, including the U.S., England, China, Switzerland, Germany and Japan.

The 927 Fifth Avenue listing agent is John Burger of Brown Harris Stevens and Louise Beit of Sotheby’s International Realty, both located in Manhattan.

so in all honestly, there’s two versions of liz’s marvel / superhuman verses. they both start out the same. below is, well, that.

ORIGIN : a star is (re)born

mom works for nasa/cia/shield group that is studying this capsule of a star given to the nasa by mysterious means. mom is seven months pregnant while researching the star in an underground facility in texas or something in the middle of nowhere. the facility explodes, & makes a huge crater (about half the size of dc). they have to wait awhile because contamination before searching for the bodies, & takes longer to clear the rubble. when they find mom, they realize something... unusual... a breathing newborn that doesn’t look prematurely. beyond confuse, the infant goes through many experiments as to how did she survive? however, they made a death certificate for her along mom, & the family (re: dad and raleigh) believes mom & child are dead; liz does not have a birth certificate. she is not suppose to exist, with only a hand selected few knowing about her (ex. nick mcflurry) & most of them simply call her ‘star.’ she grows up... in a science facility. it’s for the better, when she nearly froze an entire wing of a building at five years old. after that, they helped her control her powers in ways no one else could.

now, here’s where the two versions diverge

ONE : if they withheld her origins

this is probably the one i’ve been using more of lately, since it is the more flexible of the two. and where liz is her most chaotic / grey in morals.

it starts at the age of eleven, when she’s full of curiosity & realizes how much is hidden from her. puberty makes her brave, using her invisibility to sneak around the facilities. one night, she finds a room of boxes. she picks up the one with her an unfamiliar name : dr. martha spencer. in the box, articles about an explosion cover fringe, sloopy notes of a drawf star. but what sticks out is a worn & beaten necklace with the star of david. of everything in there, she takes the necklace, then tosses the box onto the wall. an alarm goes off, & she has to run. it takes everything not to wail & freeze the world because the world lied to her.

on her way out, a scientists detects her with infrared readings. it’s the nicer scientist, & he tries to smooth her & catch her. she almost fails for it until he touches her arm... that’s when she committed her first murder. there’s no going back as his frozen body falls, scattering chunks of him. she escapes, now wanted by the us government.

for the rest of her life, she survives on the road. she sneaks in places through her invisibility to only steal the necessities or to spend the night. she loves libraries, where she reads information about everything. as she gets older, she learns how to fake her identity & gains confidence to blend into the normal world. by 18, she’s able to pretend a whole new life, & gets accepted to college. while she wants a new leaf, she can’t help but steal when things are tight. and, if caught, the government will realize her location. she’s good enough to finish college in 2 years, but that degree is worthless when the government detects her. brown hair becomes blonde, & she’s back on the road, mainly making her income through thief & bounty.

good thing spencer is a common surname. she’ll go by another common first name : elizabeth. legends spread the tale of an ice queen, but many don’t survive to witness her themselves. a chill not to be reckon with.

TWO : if they told her origins

the more marvel-centric one, though shield can be replace with another organization. she’s similar to her main personality

it’s basically where liz stays at the science lab or whatever. so, by her tenth birthday, one of the scientists gives her a necklace with the star of david. it’s worn & beaten, but something about it makes her heart skip a beat. the scientists explains her origins, that he knew her mother & would know she would want liz to have it. he also lets her know she does have family out there, & explains why she isn’t able to visit. things he & many were not able to control. because of the honesty, she understands. but he must keep her promise of letting her see the rest of her family. he promises, but it has to be after her 18th birthday.

around 15, she solely trains for shield / another organization. she also starts journeying the outside world with close supervision. it doesn’t bother her; she’s studying the world as a test subject, just as they have done to her. valedictorian of the fifth high school she went to. finally visit her family on her 18th birthday, but in the distance; that makes her question her purpose.

still, she goes to top the computer science majors at harvard (by shield/another organization). but she’s now suppose to work for shield / ao & complete missions. however, she doesn’t want to do that; she’s tired of others using her powers for their wishes. in a smooth comprise, she goes into stark industries / another tech company as an it specialist (most often in nyc). and she thrives at the position, easily gaining ranks. it’s the closest to a normal life. yet, she must roam the nights & weekends when shield / ao sends her a mission cater in nyc. this other alias is brutal... cold... legends spread the tale of an ice queen, but many don’t survive to witness her themselves. a chill not to be reckon with.

Mon 2/20 to Wed 2/22, 2017

It’s not as glamorous as you might think being an Uber driver. These are people I encountered this week.

“I matched with this chick on Tinder. She said she’s got a grandpa fantasy, I asked what’s that, she said she’s into older men. I didn’t know I was considered an older man, much less a grandpa! She wanted to meet me this afternoon, but I told her I couldn’t because I was flying here. Hopefully she’s still looking when I get back!”

Guy from Dallas, works in London and Dallas, headed back to London for a few weeks. Not pleased that he has to go straight from the airport to the office tomorrow, it’ll be like he’s getting in at 4am. Discussed living and travelling in Europe.

Two guys in from San Diego, staying at an AirBnB a couple blocks from the downtown area. A Stevie Ray Vaughan song came on the music, and we fell into discussing SRV, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton as guitarists, and what the two dead ones might be doing these days if they were still alive.

Computer Science major at Rice. He’s not totally happy going to school at Rice for CS, he thinks that their curriculum is too much theory and not enough practical applications for what he wants to be doing. He has thought about transferring, but (a) likes the Rice atmosphere and people, and (b) his parents don’t want him to transfer.

Two high school girls from Boston visiting Rice University, on their way back home. Both graduating seniors, both invited to Rice to spend a weekend at the school with other students so they can see the facilities and campus life. One wants to go into biomechanical engineering, the other into computer engineering. It sounded like Rice has a program to encourage high school girls into STEM educational tracks, as their group was all girls from around the country. Both said their local high schools have similar pushes for girls in STEM, like girls-only coding camps and scholarships.

Got a call to pick up “two hot blondes wearing blue”, per the phone call. Both were older, probably mid 60s, in town for a conference up at the Woodlands for some product they were selling (started with a Z or an X). This was allegedly some “phenomenal” drink powder that when mixed with water, cures whatever is ailing you, and targets only the part of you that needs to get better. In a conversation between the two, “People are so dumb” when they go to the doctors, who are all in league with Big Pharma, because the doctors only treat the symptoms with their fancy drugs, if only they’d use all-natural products everyone could get healed and go on to live better lives. Fortunately they never gave me a sales pitch.

Picked up an Indian guy who was going to visit a friend now that his conference was over. He’s new to the US, only been in NY for six months, and talked about how his co-workers made him root for the NY Giants in the NFL because he was totally ignorant of football. Also doesn’t understand baseball, but he’s a fan of rugby and cricket. Unfortunately, those are just close enough to football and baseball to confuse him. Also has never seen any Star Wars movie, and asked if I knew what the correct watching order was because a co-worker wanted him to watch the movies. I told him 4-5-1-2-3-6-7, with Rogue One either first or last. Turns out that though he works in NYC, he lives in Edison NJ, just a few miles from where I used to live from 1973-81.

Guy at a hotel near the airport wanted a ride back to the airport to pick up his luggage, which had been on a different flight than he was. Had a Chicago accent, but he said he grew up in Detroit. In fact, he met someone once who was an accent specialist who was able to deduce what part of Detroit (to within about 15 miles) he grew up in after just a couple hours of listening to him talk.

Last run of the day, stopped at a party store. The woman told me they were getting some balloons for her uncle’s birthday – 39 in all, for his 39th birthday. Unfortunately they called for the Uber before the balloons were finished, so I ended up waiting (I usually get annoyed when passengers make me wait, but when I found out it was for a memorial party, I figured it was more important to them that they find a ride home (their car was in the shop) than it was for me to get home 5 minutes sooner). Turned out that the uncle was in heaven with Jesus, and they held a party for him every year with one balloon for each year he would have been. Managed to fit her, her father (the uncle’s brother), her brother, and her son, plus 39 helium-filled balloons in the car. It was a tight fit, and noisy too, with all the mylar balloons squeaking against each other. (One person stood in the back by the hatch and gave the strings to a person in the middle seat to pull the balloons through, and they got about 20 into the hatch area that way. Then there were about 10 in the middle seat and another 9 in the front, with the front passenger holding them down by her feet and lap so that I could see.) Got to the apartment complex and everyone got out, but one balloon escaped. She started crying because they were supposed to have 39 at the party and now she only had 38, but her dad said that Jesus must have called the balloon to him, which made her feel better. They thanked me for being a part of Jesus’ plan to help them celebrate the man’s life and wished me a blessed day.
