I Need to Learn How to Mambo Dance and RELAX with Mr. Steam!

How do you relax?

Great question, right? I actually had to think about an answer to this one when I was asked the other day. Seriously, I had to think about it. 

Dance into Dancing

Here, I’ll give you a little peek into a day in the life of 'me'. As most of you may know, I’m a designer; a busy one and I, honestly, love what I do. My love for design and creating wraps itself into virtually every crevice of my life in one way or another. Even in my sleep I think design. In fact, I often come up with the best ‘aha’ ideas while lying awake (or dreaming). I usually wake up around 5:30 a.m., hit the snooze a couple of times, and then jump out of bed. The order of my morning is coffee, big breakfast, a bit of free-weights if I can squeeze it in, shower and more coffee. And then they invented social media. This means engaging on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook all of which requires a big cup of coffee and while simultaneously applying makeup and getting dressed. I pour one more coffee into a travel mug for the road.  If it’s a Monday (let’s say it’s a Monday) I stop at the flower shop on my way into the studio. Fresh flowers are a mainstay in my studio. I cannot ‘be’ without them. I have a design studio and a fabulously talented design team of 5!  Before I settle into my office, I fill the vases. Each designer gets flowers on their desk and flowers reign in various vases throughout the studio.

I do my usual fussing. I like everything very neat and in order. I will confess that I have some issues in this department. It’s just a bit obsessive and compulsive. Could this be a disorder? I see fingerprints on my red high gloss cabinets! I have to get to that before I sit down to take on the emails, phone messages and provide answers to the big and the small questions; they all matter, of course. 

It’s coffee time and confession time. I drink too much coffee! 

Fast forward through the staff meeting and lunch at my desk and, oh my, it’s 1 p.m. #MondayMambo time. Already! Sorry Martha, from Mr. Steam AKA: Feel Good Inc. I have yet to convince my staff to cut for some Mambo dancing. We need lessons! Do you provide that sort of thing?  I do love Latin music, so I’m on a mission to make this happen! So that you know, I believe in the power of music. Music is always playing.

The day shifts and shapes quite organically in our studio although there is a master plan in the equation. It's called 'Get it Done.' That's right, we're masters of this process and we do it in style and with perfection. Wednesday happens to be a presentation day this week and it'll be a full-on display of plans, colourful renderings and materials on our uber large island. 

Fast forward to the end of the day. It's 7:30 and I've just walked through the door at home. I have to get on that treadmill! I can think about the parallam beam issue at the same time. It happens to be running right beneath the floor we need to lower by a few crucial inches. Darn those support structures anyhow! The solution will surely present itself. 

So you see, clearly, I need to relax. It’s good to know that there is therapy!

I was recently at the Aria in Las Vegas as part of the Modenus’ Blog Tour Vegas team. Did you know that the Aria has the most beautiful spa facility? I was thrilled to hear that we would be staying at the luxury hotel since I’d visited before and was very impressed. So I’m getting to the therapy part.

The fantastic and frenetic days of Blog Tour are filled with all that is new and wonderful in design and, most importantly, we get to meet the inspiring people behind it. It all typically culminates with the most incredible session of relaxation and well-being courtesy of Martha Orellana from Mr. Steam. I can tell you that the minute I see the warm smile of Martha, I feel calmed. She can brighten up a room instantly. I believe it must certainly have something to do with living ‘well’ and believing in it with passion. It radiates.

I’m not just saying this because of the beautiful Tala Gift Set and spa experience we received either. I can say that everyone had a big smile on their face when seeing those beautiful red and white boxes. What a treat! Thank you so  much, Martha!

At the Aria spa, we experienced the most exquisite Mr. Steam sauna infused with the calming powers of eucalyptus oils. It was invigorating!

Since I’ve returned home, I’ve been using the Tala essential oils, clays, and scrubs religiously, and I’m thrilled! The exclusive bath line is based on the ancient Hammam bathing traditions and is  made from pure and natural Moroccan ingredients.

To be honest, I’ve been contemplating a steam shower for quite some time now. I’ve been designing them into our client’s homes for years. I need to clarify that this is a luxury that doesn’t necessarily require a lot of space or a big budget. An enclosure of 3’ x 3’ x 7’ is sufficient, and a unit can start at around 1,200.00. It can also be retrofitted into an existing shower if remodeling is not an option or necessary. 

The beautiful thing about this is the customization and personalization options. If you wish, you can create a ‘Total-Body Sensory Experience’ which is how Mr. Steam describes their Steam Therapy Event. This is a merging of scent, light, sound and steam. Chromatherapy, aromatherapy, and music can all be integrated and controlled either from the inside of the unit or wirelessly. So I have my answer to ‘how do you relax’? It’s a bit layered really. I love to listen to music, particularly to the rather corny simple tunes of the 70’s. I most certainly have to escape from my social media devices. I like to fill my senses with simple and beautiful things. Flowers and nice smells and a clean space are on the top of my 'relaxing' list. I like reading a book, or not reading a book, with a nice cup of tea or…glass of champagne in my hand. The best answer is lingering on a long bench in my new steam shower after a productive day at the studio because it was Monday and we all danced the Mambo and danced it well!

KBIS2015 The Highlights, The Trends and its 'Crazy Extravaganza of Innovation.'

“KBIS is always a crazy extravaganza of innovation, and it’s fun to be part of it” – Jonathan Adler

The Las Vegas Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), is inspiring, interactive and a true celebration of design. In conjunction with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), this yearly event is the voice of the industry. KBIS is where the latest products and innovations, the trends and technologies and the brightest talent in the kitchen and bath industry converge from all corners. It’s been happening for more than 50 years.

Our Modenus Blog Tour Vegas team was there also!  Together our team of eighteen designers, architects and design bloggers from around the globe were ready to absorb, participate and engage in all that is KBIS2015. We were there to bring it all back with us too, at least in terms of the knowledge, ideas and inspirations. After all, this is how the design world keeps spinning and evolving.

The Modenus Blog Tour Vegas mantra was ‘What happens in Vegas….gets shared with the world! So, in the name of sharing, here are the highlights, the trends, and the designs and innovations that spoke to me. 

Pattern Embracing By-Gone Eras and Glamour

Glorious pattern, dimensional, sleek and textured graced this show! There was a most certain borrowing of historical motif and line presented in a somewhat pared-down modernism. It all speaks to global influence, eclecticism and the willingness to infuse our homes with a bit of savvy risk-taking.

I must begin with the Anne Sacks exhibit. This was such a sumptuous display of luxury and craftsmanship. I was stopped in my tracks. The display walls featured the most beautiful Deco-inspired dimensional patterns melding metallic and stone with lux finishes in pewter, silver and gold. The Ogassian Brise collection of pierced concrete tiles was simply outstanding and offered a new take on the 70’s modern and mid-century cinderblock screens. So many ideas began to percolate…dizzying it was really.

Pattern was the Walker Zanger booth theme. Here, tile pattern took on a bespoke textile quality. One could indeed imagine it all as wallpaper, and this is how the design world is using it. The Villa D’Oro collection of stone mosaics strip traditional European motifs down to their basic architecture and are further simplified with neutral colourways. The emphasis was on geometry and collections such as Tangent and Tilt explore these dimensions and effects in stone mosaics and ceramics. The influences range from mid-century modern to all manner of eclectic sources including Hollywood Regency and 1970’s Sci-Fi.

The big showstopper was the Sterling Row Collection combining materials of a wood-look porcelain with marble in soft gray, white and black. What can I say? This is an exquisite line of aesthetics and function. Having said that, it's no surprise that this line won the gold in KBIS Best in Bath. Influenced by traditional menswear the line includes iconic patterns such as argyle and houndstooth and finds inspiration from the wing-tip shoe.

I cannot leave out the Jonathan Adler Collection of laminates for Formica. It’s fresh, chic, and it’s called ‘Glaminate’ ranging swirls of malachite, the classic Greek Key and textured linen with bold colour.

We had the opportunity to close in around this collection and speak with Jonathan Adler. According to Jonathan, this collection is “really about making laminate something you don’t upgrade from but something you upgrade to."

Technology and Innovation

There was a big focus on technology-driven products and design. This included everything from material innovations expanding the application possibilities to ‘smart’ appliances with seamless integration.

Cosentino impressed the Blog Tour Team with their Dekton solid surface product not only at the show but also at the glamorous, contemporary penthouses of the Mandarin Oriental. It’s the very latest technology in solid surfaces, combining glass, porcelain and quartz. The ultra-compact surface is available in large format slabs and three thicknesses. Another revolutionary innovation is Thermador’s Freedom Induction Cooktop. This design is a culinary enthusiast’s dream! The entire 36” surface is one large element via self-mapping technology. This ‘smart’ appliance also has good looks with a frameless trim for seamless integration into the countertop.

I must mention the LG Hausys, Tech Top. It won the KBIS Best of Show! It was among 100 product entries in this year’s competition. We were all eager to see how a device could be charged by simply placing it on the countertop. I need one! This is a technology of seamless integration and convenience. The wireless charging surface is made of durable natural quartz and polymers with an embedded transmitter beneath it. Artistry and Craftsmanship

KBIS showed us that craftsmanship and artful one-offs were most certainly still alive amid all the latest sparkling trends and innovations.

Featured high and proud on a large pedestal and surrounded by a network of metal geometry was the Aquabrass ‘Kanvas’ freestanding bathtub. This collection is a limited series, hand-painted and signed by the artist! The hand-painted stone resin exteriors range in theme from the bold and urban Graffiti, the Zen-inspired Pax to the architecturally-inspired Mosaik. Of course, Aquabrass won the Innovation Booth Award with this creative montage!

Craftsmanship and artistry extended to the finely outfitted walnut drawers and the highly delicate mitred fronts and carcases of Poggenpohl’s Porsche P7350 kitchen. The process is that of precise engineering and incredible attention to detail within a contemporary aesthetic.

Personalization, Well-Being and the Heart of the Home

There was an overarching focus on personalization and well-being at KBIS2015.

Toto’s Person-First Innovation philosophy, whereby design and innovation is wrapped around the needs of the person, rang clear within their lifestyle suite vignettes. Here the fine-tuned ergonomics of a tub met sleek contemporary line providing the ‘experience’ of a beautiful bathroom. The latest Neo-rest free-standing tub is a favourite with its polished chrome armrests and ergonomic sculpturing.

Wood-Mode offered a holistic and personalized design approach in their Oceanside Lifestyle Concept. The contemporary open-plan kitchen is a hyper-functional space of integrated storage solutions and an aesthetic embracing the concept of casual luxury.

Our very own, Veronika Miller, CEO of Modenus and Blog Tour summed it up perfectly when interviewed by Editor At Large. She said, “The heart of the home phrase is more and more true....the rooms that matter, where we come together, where we can embrace a more healthy and ‘well’ life, that happens in the kitchen and bathroom. That’s why those two areas are so dominant and so important. This year KBIS is knocking it out of the park.”

 After taking this spirited show of new ideas and innovation all in, our Blog Tour Vegas team had the honour to judge the Best of KBIS2015. The awards categories were divided into Best of Show, Best of Kitchen (gold and silver) and Best of Bath (gold and silver) and were judged based on functionality, aesthetics and innovation. The Modenus team also represented part of a juried panel for the KBIS Innovation Booth Awards. Creative exhibits are important in communicating the first impression and overall message of the products and ideas within them. In addition to the WOW Factor, the booths were judged on Messaging, Education, Engagement and ‘The Unexpected & Unprecedented’.

I have to say that there were so many outstanding designs to absorb and be amazed by. It was interesting to realize that our diverse group all gravitated to some of the same products and ideas. I believe there’s something to be said about the reflex towards responsive designs; those creations that are based on the intrinsic needs of the day.

We were all immediately entranced by the hand-painted, limited edition ‘Kanvas’ Aquabrass tubs. Is this because we crave the real, hand-touched craftsmanship and artistry within our world of simulated and cybernetic everything? Just musing.  Designs and innovations that held a certain magic stood out like beacons at the end of the day. It is clear that great design will always have a resounding unifiable voice.

We all agreed that there is a continued focus on clean, painted finishes on cabinetry with a particular shift towards gray. A strong European influence of smooth contemporary line is most certainly here to stay and, coupled with this, the transitional space has evolved to embrace it all. A fine-tuned eclecticism mixing metals, textures, finishes, and unique style is the united trend of the day.

So how does a company translate what’s new in design into their classic product lineup?  I’m intrigued with how Top Knobs deciphers and articulates the trends into their details. Their understanding of what drives these trends is the grounding. 

Two standout collections were introduced at this show, Aspen II and Transcend. Ramsland dissected for us the company’s design approach in terms of the ergonomics, the details of their craftsmanship and the architecture of the pieces all of which speak to the demands of today’s styles.

The Aspen II Collection is an elegant line with artisanal nuances. It strikes a transitional chord with contemporary finishes on classic, old-world form. Ramsland pointed out the brushed satin nickel finish on hand-cast bronze. The substrate gives the finish more of an up-to-date, brushed platinum appeal that speaks beautifully to the cooler gray tones of the day.

Aspen II Collection 

This collection also has a personality-driven side to it and opens up the possibilities to create with a bit of edge. The twig-inspired pull is a statement piece among the classic cup pulls and simple rounded profiles.

The line works in effortlessly with a recent kitchen design our firm created. It speaks to our concept of casual and fresh ambiance and completes our mix of classical elements, rustic and sleek finishes and unexpected modern accent. I love to vary hardware. On this feature wall we incorporated cup pulls, rounded appliance pulls, the potato knob and the spectacular twig pulls which complete our rustic, ‘salvaged-look’ uppers.

Ramsland discussed the ergonomics and architecture behind ‘Transcend’, another featured collection. This is a line of hardware that mixes various modern shapes and finishes into a soft contemporary aesthetic.The series include Podium, Ascendra, Contour and Spectrum. The designs embrace a form-meets-function approach within the detailing.

Transcend Collection

I adore the architectural quality of the Spectrum series with its six-sided curves. It has a Gothic contemporary vibe. This series holds the statement pieces within the Transcend lineup.

In response to market demand, the Transcend collection also features square knobs within its series. The square forms are ergonomically detailed with softened undersides.

The Podium series features strong, angular bar pulls and square knobs with fine-stepped detailing. It has an architectural quality on its face, but the design is softened on the underside to fit the hand. This type of detailing and all the nuances within this entire collection defines quality.

Ramsland looks at the ever-evolving trends as an opportunity to hone in and tie in beautifully the hardware with compatible finishes, with personality-driven statement pieces and a timeless hand-crafted detailing; to complete the canvas so to speak.

An Intuitive Connection: The New American Home 2015 and the Art of Beautiful Materials

What happens when technology, innovation and sustainability cross paths with a seamless arrangement of beautiful aesthetic? The New American Home 2015 in Las Vegas of course!

As part of the Blog Tour Vegas team, I consider myself so fortunate to have toured the spectacular desert contemporary home with all its luxurious and state-of-the-art appointments. Quite honestly I was in awe at the doorstep.

Our busload of designers and architects arrived on such a clear starlit eve that it was enough to rival the distant bright lights of the Vegas strip. With views of the mountains and city, the parcel of land this home inhabits is priceless. At first, I questioned why we wouldn’t have explored this home by daylight but I quickly realized that this place holds a very certain magic in all its shadow and light play on the contemporary form. The landscaping, building and lighting are integrated into one sculptural composition. Pure art.

Did I mention that this is a production style home? That’s right. Blue Heron, a design/build firm has worked this gem, called the ‘Onyx’, into their Sky Terrace community. The pre-packaged design concept with a pre-set library of materials is both viable and attainable but is also undeniably custom in all its inventive approaches and specific crafting for the individual. Hence, this build process is appropriately coined ‘pre-designed custom’. 

The efficiently planned home integrates 5,900 square feet of living and entertaining spaces all of which are tightly woven into another 2,300 square feet of exterior schemes. An entertainer’s paradise! The ethos lies in the keen relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces and an embrace of a casual and relaxed ambiance. From room to room, the transitions are smooth and the sight lines are uninterrupted, continuing on to a seamless integration with the exterior patios, decks, courtyards and grand vistas. On a clear day, or eve, sleekly styled and glazed pocket doors can be tucked into their recesses creating openings up to 26’ wide. Here is where the lines between inside and outside living become blurred. And it all occurs with a natural ease as if the home were an outcrop of the desert landscape itself.

 A natural and neutral organic palette is the common denominator and materials are shared between the indoor and outdoor living spaces. One really can’t decipher the transitions from inside to outside and this is the deliberate design intent. The main floor principal rooms of kitchen, living room and dining room are beautifully synchronized into one expansive space of form and function.Large glazed openings facilitate remarkable panoramic views. With such a natural flow of space and material this is one harmonic environment.

Miguel Hutton, a Blue Heron team member, is the designer of this contemporary masterpiece. He led us through the spaces and provided his perspectives and insights. It really is a brilliantly designed home incorporating some gorgeous details and materials. 

As I muse through a slice of this beautiful home, my focus will be on how some of the distinctive materials share an intuitive connection with the design philosophies.

Many of the home’s beautiful stone and tile were specified from the Walker Zanger repertoire. Walker Zanger is a world-leading natural stone and tile company with a signature for quality,timeless design and modern sophistication. A perfect fit for this home. 

What better place to showcase quality than upon entering the home. A softly graphic and wave-like mosaic of honed Calacatta Oro and Carrara marble strikes a bespoke first impression on an alcove wall. It’s one of WalkerZanger’s latest collections called Tangent and it’s a beauty.  Defined with a soft halo of LED strip lighting around its perimeter this feature wall has a calming and welcoming presence. At the centre of it all is an elevated fireplace. Now this is the first entry I’ve ever seen with a fireplace as the focal point. An instant enrapturing. I love the concept!

Within the calm and seamless canvas of this home there lies plenty of room for the wow factors and special features. 

I would say that the media room is one ‘hot-topic’ space. It encompasses state of the art technology and beautifully illuminated materials. How impressive the back-lit translucent marble bar top is amid all the natural layering and textural components.  It’s another Walker Zanger beauty called Bianco Nueve and one of the few marbles that can perform with light. It really is the art and sculpture in the space.

The true dynamics of this space really come into play when the pocket doors are opened up to the adjoining exterior courtyard with its beautiful water and fire features. No interruption here since a beautiful porcelain which mimics natural limestone flows through effortlessly.

This is where the elements of air, earth, fire and water are celebrated and the concept of interaction between spaces is most emphasized. It’s a breathtaking environment. I love the water table of black granite and its smoked glass top which sits just under the water’s surface. 

I could write a book about this home so I’ll have to skip up to the second floor where the soothing neutral palette and beautiful materials continue to weave the story. Here an engineered oak hardwood called Clarett by Mohawk Flooring is the hinge to the cohesive scheme. Its wide plank format and wire-brushed finish with a strong grey tone works perfectly within the natural setting. It’s also part of Mohawk’s GreenWorks initiatives which speaks to the sustainability focus of this home.

I must mention here that this home’s environmental performance profile is extensive and comprehensive achieving a net-zero energy status through systems such as its thermal envelope, solar energy, LED light fixtures and a 15 KW photovoltaic array. Aligning sustainable, eco-friendly products into the aesthetics is certainly a key focus. 

Many of the beautiful carpets in this home are not only characteristically stylish but also responsible. It’s a smart luxury approach. Karastan is one such sustainable brand and I’m very impressed with its Smart Strand Silk Forever Clean innovation. Crafted from the inside out, the fibres are made from plant-based renewable materials and are both luxurious and durable with an advanced nano-technology stain protector built right in. Perfect on all fronts.

I can ardently say that this home doesn’t stop entertaining. The second floor loft bar is another brilliant space with illuminated slabs on the bar and adjoining wine room.  A Walker Zanger Crystal quartzite is back-lit with LED panels. Its veining is so striking. This natural stone is also durable and has the power to perform.

As on the first floor, the features stand out as luminous sculpture amid the natural foundation. It’s really all about strategic emphasis. I love the wine room which is glass enclosed and features columns of the same glowing crystal quartzite. As a backdrop to the black steel wine racking, a natural stone called Lucca by Walker Zanger, is composed of an intermix of three different colours in a textured rift finish. The natural graphic is also featured on the bar façade.

Grounding an intimate seating arrangement, a stylized floral Karastan area carpet called Camellia Crème Brulee holds that 'certain something’ to make this room sing with a bit of unexpected colour. It was an instant, ‘Yes..must have’ according to Miguel. To me, these are the small and important details which make a beautiful space exceptional.  

A catwalk leads to the master bedroom suite and its spa-like retreat bathroom. This private, downtime area is all about the calm environment. Beautiful tone-on-tone materials with elegant textures comprise this space. A geometric wool bound carpet, called Iconic Square by Karastan contributes a soft sculpting.

I love the raised sitting space which essentially divides the expansive bedroom into two intimate areas. The fireplace is wrapped in a blue Carrara marble which sits strategically in front of the two sequential spaces. The TV above the fireplace is perfectly aligned for viewing from the raised sitting space. I have to mention the, oh so elegant, wall finish in this space since we all oooed and ahhed over it. It’s a custom metallic Venetian plaster in a muted charcoal grey. I love when classic treatments are reinvented through contemporary perspectives.

The impressive ensuite features a large central bubble massage tub by Kohler, called Escale. Apparently the massage feature is like sitting in champagne (my kind of tub). It stands in beautiful sculpted form and featured just above is a ceiling mounted tub-filler offering plenty of cool-factor. The envelope continues in a calm natural palette with a beautiful Silver Sienna Light travertine which transitions out onto the adjoining deck. The relationship from indoor to outdoor flows through the entire home.

Kohler vessel sinks are deep and sculptural and are complemented with a brushed bronze faucet. This is a fashionably new finish offered by Kohler which strikes a balance between gold and brushed nickel. It also brings a bit of rusticity into the shower which was a deliberate design direction.

The shower wraps a striking combination of  textured wood grain porcelain called Nature and a white mosaic called Galactica. Both are by Walker Zanger. I love the combination of geometry and texture and the blending of rusticity against a clean, spa-white finish.

The other interesting consideration here is the way in which the brushed bronze finish in shower fittings interact with these materials. The finish has a bit of chameleon character. Gold tones are pronounced when up against the white and are dissipated when up against the wood-look porcelain. These are the nuances in design which stand out in excellence.

Certainly many features in this home impress. The seamless interaction of beautiful natural materials with the landscape, the innovative and the sustainable approaches, and all that speaks emphasis within a harmonious grounding are what sets this home on a pinnacle.
