"INSTEAD OF LOSING CONTROL OF THE PARTY, THOUGH, FUNKDOOBIEST REMAINS ON TOP THROUGHOUT..."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a print advert and/or record advert for "The Troubleshooters," the third full-length album by L.A.-based Latin/alternative hip-hop group FUNKDOOBIEST, released under the RCA label in early 1998. The advert was featured in the January '98 issue of "Rap Pages" magazine.
ALBUM OVERVIEW: "There’s something very fresh sounding on “Troubleshooters,” the third album by L.A.’s FUNKDOOBIEST. It could be the relative lack of filler and the DJ Ralph M.’s original approach to samples. The mad, driving swing of the Squirrel Nut Zipper’s “Hell” drives the first single, “Papi Chulo.” They twist around some verses to suit their own purposes on oldies like Bill Withers’ “Just the Two of Us” (to “just Funkdoobiest”) and Diana Ross’ “Theme From Mahogany” (“Doobie knows where you’re going to”).
They bring back the catchy beat and sped-up vocals of Newcleus’ “Jam on It” on the remake “Act on It.” But instead of borrowing the familiar hook from the Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love,” they cop its central question: “Whatcha gonna do when you get out of jail?”
The delivery of rapper Sondoobie has a familiar ring — that high, whiny New York wiseacre squawk often associated with CYPRESS HILL. Yet he’s changing the voice a bit too, slowing it down with a deeper voice on a few tracks, yet still switching effortlessly from English to Spanish and back.
There are a lot of voices on “Troubleshooters” though, including Daz from Tha Dogg Pound on “Papi Chulo,” and Hitman, Hurricane G, Tony Touch, MC Fats, and a handful of others.
Instead of losing control of the party, though, Funkdoobiest remains on top throughout “Troubleshooters,” making it the sharpest rap release of the year yet."
-- HARTFORD COURANT, review for FUNKDOOBIEST's "Troubleshooters" (1998) album, published February 12, 1998

Mild rant from me about Hans Zimmer's involvement in Dragon Age:
I just think it's such sellout behavior to hire expensive movie composers (Zimmer is also known to be a transphobic asshole lol) known for their blockbuster soundtracks for your game when you already had the most iconic soundtrack ever for the previous installment, except the composer was lesser known.
Most people hear the swell of violins and immediately think it must be the best soundtrack ever, but if I am really honest, the DATV soundtrack so far sounds like the most generic slopfest with the laziest leitmotif I had the misfortune to hear in a long while.
Hiring people for their name alone is something I find incredibly shameful. Like I cannot even put into words how nasty it is in my eyes, because it actively takes away from lesser known creatives in the industry who could have made a name for themselves. And it doesn't matter to me if Zimmer only did the Main Theme or whatever, because in that case, it shouldn't be his name that is plastered everywhere but Balfe's! But everyone is talking about Zimmer anyway for exactly the reasons I already mentioned.
Even just the thought of how expensive this endeavor must have been... That money could have gone to other, more important places, easily. It makes the layoffs also that much more bitter in my eyes. Idk. I adore Dragon Age and I am still a huge fan and I will play it, but stuff like that make me angry. I don't need some Zimmer who has been sitting his ass on his laurels from 10 years ago in my franchise. I'd rather have a no name person, or Trevor Morris, to get a chance again.
#dragon age critical#dragon age the veilguard#datv#hans zimmer#i talk sometimes#idk if i am so sensitive because i almost studied music myself after playing piano my entire youth but this topic makes me so tilted lmfao#i still am very much a big fan of DA this game has literally saved me but man#we dont need these old rich men with their well known names in there tbh. like we should be over it imo#this goes hand in hand with my hatred towards blockbuster hollywood actors getting voice acting jobs btw#this aint your genre please go away

Look all I'm saying is that if I were going to make a minecraft movie.
Well, first off I'd put down the first person to even reccomend we do it in cgi. Not just because it looks objectively terrible and half of the magic and nostalgia factor of minecraft is in its texture but holy shit budget much??? You are literally looking at a situation where the cheaper option is also objectively the better option. What the fuck are you doing
But I mean, after that.
Second off, all my writers must watch popular smps and minecraft roleplays/let's plays to understand the "magic" of the game. That's how we're studying for this, not the game books or whatever. Those guys are clearly doing smthn right, and as the executive/writer who knows very little about mineraft that I am in this hypothetical scenario, I need to do my best to make money. And that means learning what people like about the game and community.
Maybe even bring on some popular (non controversial please god) smp writers for consulting. They literally make minecraft movies as their fucking job, they are the expert u need to consult
Story wise, you NEED to choose if you wanna play this straight or silly. I'm so sick of movies trying to be all emotional and "ohh this world is so beautiful,, if u could only understand,, woaa" with their epic sound track and dramatic lighting, but then the dialogue being ripped out of a stupid marvel knockoff trying too hard to be witty
Anyways. Give me a generic "kid has a hard life and uses [thing] to escape it but then their parent trashes [thing] to teach them a "lesson"" movie.
The thing is minecraft and this kid is totally in love with letsplays and smps and has a server with their online friends (get a sponsorship from discord for that good good film sponsorship money, have them play while in call)
The mom or dad or maybe both trash the kids computer for some reason (bad grades maybe or one of those shitty "you need to talk to us more!!! That computer is killing ur brain!!! You don't love us as much as you should and it's that damn games fault!!!" But like it's actually just a kid being a normal fucking kid and having normal fucking kid hobbies things and the parents are dicks)
They delete the minecraft world rip
Them boom, kid somehow gets stuck in the game
Switch to NON CGI FILMING IN MINECRAFT. If you really need to add your stupid shitty fucking cgi then at least make it look like an ACTUAL MINECRAFT ANIMATION holy shit
It'll save us so much money too
So main plot is this kid, being trapped in minecraft, actually falling through different minecraft servers.
We can have different cameos from popular smps and youtubers, get some old youtubers and gameplay in here too. Get fucking dantdm and the diamond minecarts og series with the lab thing, it'll make the old fans lose their fucking MINDS.
The youtubers themselves don't even have to show up, just shove the kid into settings that are clear references to smps and letsplays. Have them wander through Aphmau's OG minecraft diaries sets or Sundee's lucky block series
The best part is that as backdrops, you don't even have to fully commit to "you'll only get this/find this interesting if you know these guys" bc if your writing is good enough you can still make people care by just. Introducing it correctly. Don't present it as "Aphmau's old minecraft diaries series world" go "oh wow look st this cool village,, woah I wonder who built this ,," And have them interact with NPCs organically
Meanwhile the parents go into the game after the kid to bring them back and we do this whole world hopping adventure where the parents learn that,, minecraft can be fun? Actually?
They find the kid and the kid is like "nooo I'm having too much fun the real world SUCKS!!!" but then we do that "it's cool to have fun and indulge but you still need to be present in the real world and do real people things too in order to have that fun responsibly" where somehow the kid realizes that moderation is good for u.
Maybe they almost die in game fr fr? Every world they enter has its difficulty upped a little bit till they enter *gasp* a hardcore world (oh no)
So like the kid learns that you can't just lock yourself in the room and wish the world goes away while you play minecraft for 12 hours straight, and the parents learn that minecraft is cool and fun and can be a good outlet and outlets are important for adults and children alike. And also that they totally pulled a dick move and they need to try to understand their kid instead of just demanding the kid understands them
Somewhere along the way, the kid ends up in their friends server and the friends help to pull them out of the game w the parents
We end the movie with the kid making an effort to be more present with the parents, and the parents also making an effort to interact with the kid in ways that they know the kid will enjoy and respond well to— shown a family dinner scene where the kid very eagerly eats their food while talking about school, then they all go to play minecraft together
The end <3
Oh right and if you seriously want Jack Black there so fucking bad then make him either the dad or like. School computer teacher who helps the kid use Minecraft EU to learn science (shows off that some schools use minecraft for education purposes) who also helps the kids friends pull them and the parents out of the game
Overall, lots of themes not just about how the game is cool and can let you do cool shit, but also about how the community is cool, and how it's provided so many kids and adults outlets to express themselves and have fun together
That's how you do a game movie
Anyways yeah, minecraft movie looks shit. Hire me instead next time
#minecraft movie#holy fuck it looks so shit#the generic “epic” trailer music.#the even more generic stereotypical hollywood blockbuster script formula.#I took psychic damage#birds rambles#birds fic talk#kinda? does this count? whatever im telling a story Ill count it#minecraft#smp#writing#writers on tumblr#mc#film

rip benson thepassenger, you would have loved david cronenberg's crash. good thing you were alive to see it. too bad you weren't alive long enough to stare at your twink co-worker/hostage for 98 minutes straight while you forced him to watch it with you.
#i do like to think that a post-canon randy finds himself listening to the music he knows benson liked#and even watching movies he thinks he would have liked#and after randy's watched every classic horror movie at the local blockbuster#the clerk there starts pushing him to get into cronenberg#and randy is bashfully intrigued by the eroticism that exists on the edge of life and death#anywho#i reeeaaally want post-cannon randy bradley to continue to come off like this cute little all-american boy scout#but surprise people with the music/film taste that he adopted from the murderer he used to work with#give me post-canon randy bradley that still hums along to billy joel and duran duran but also blasts black sabbath and d.o.a.!#the passenger

The LH song with a life of its own
Daughter Caitlin was listening to a New Yorker magazine podcast - a conversation between music critics Naomi Fry and Kelefa Sanneh about how social media - TikTok, in particular - has reshaped the popular-music landscape,
They discussed all the usual players - Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Katy Perry, Chappell Roan, etc.
Then, about 40 minutes into the interview, the conversation between the two music critics took a radical turn - toward a song that's practically an oldie:
Sanneh: "One of the biggest songs of 2024 is 'The Night We Met' - the 2015 song by Lord Huron. (Cue a short clip of the song).
Fry: "Wait, really?'
Kalefa: "Yes, that (song) has ... gone more viral than ever. It's over 2 billion streams on Spotify.
Fry: "Wait .... How did this happen (with) a 2015 song?"
Kalefa: "It's gotten a bunch of music placements over the years. It's gotten some TikTok activit; people seem to keep finding it. It's huge on the chart. It's being consumed at an incredible level.
"And ... obviously Lord Huron are not pop girlies, right? This is a kind of like retro rock indie song. Yeah. but to a lot of people's experience of 2024, while we're talking about all this stuff, they're talking about that."
Obviously "TNWM" got a big boost from its placement, in 2017, in an iconic scene in the TV series "13 Reasons Why." But that doesn't totally explain its staying power.
Maybe it's just a damn fine tune.

It's amusing how The Greatest Showman made a lot of money, had a big fan base when it came out and to this day people still make covers and animatics of the songs, and yet I never see people actually talk about the movie anymore.

I've ranted a whole lot about the importance of physical media in the past. I love physical media. I have a CD and vinyl collection of stuff from my favorite bands, and am currently getting back into reading and found I vastly prefer physical books over both ebooks and audiobooks. I got the entire DVD box of ATLA last year just so that I can watch it whenever I like.
But it took me until today to realize that the reason why is because of how badly all these digital streaming service-platforms have affected me.
Like, I found art from a webcomic a while ago that I thought looked really interesting, but have been putting off reading the thing for MONTHS. I couldn't quite put my finger on why until I found out yesterday that there are printed, physical copies for sale of the entire webcomic itself in book format. And despite absolutely insane shipping costs, I could at some point buy it, and keep it.
And now I finally started reading it, and I'm loving it.
Turns out, I would rather put myself through sickening, nauseating FOMO than risk the piece of media getting taken off the platform it's available on in the middle of me reading/watching it.
What the fuck.
#i fucking hate streaming platforms okay#a big fuck you to netflix in particular#I also just barely managed to read Legendborn on Storytel A MONTH before both Legendborn and Bloodmarked got removed#So I had to wait until I could get hold of Bloodmarked in physical format before I could read it#and don't even get me started on the amount of music that is currently grayed out on my playlists on Spotify bcs they've been taken down#and I know the Spotify issue is because the artist literally need to pay a fee to have it on Spotify at all but like for god's sake#anyways the web comic I've started reading is “Countdown to Countdown” by Velinxi and it's stunning and fantastic and fun <333 :))#and apparently book 2 is gonna be printed sometime early next year so I'm gonna wait til then and buy both book 1+2 to save on shipping <33#but istg the amount of stuff I avoid getting into just to not have to deal with it disappearing right in front of me#I almost wish I never even watched Julie and the Phantoms at all because it's a Netflix original#and I won't be able to get it on dvd without pirating it and I WANT TO SUPPORT THE CREATORS OF THE SHOW BECAUSE IT'D FUCKING FANTASTIC#I'm so fkn mad lol fuck streaming platforms bring back the fkn blockbusters-movie rentals or whatever#AND DONT EVEN GET ME FUCKING STARTED ON THE WAY STREAMING PLATFORMS LAUNCH 8 EPISODE SEASONS AND CALL IT A DAY I WANT TO *SCREAM*#tove rants

the wicked film is going to be such a disaster. it already wasn't the best musical and it looks like the new adaptation hasn't added anything to redeem it...
#um.txt#les mis' film adaptation being technically not great is fine bc les mis is so good it cancels it out#but wicked has like 3 good songs and nobody remembers anything that happens after defying gravity#also its so UGLY every screenshot ive seen has that 2024 blockbuster look where theyve obviously poured tons of money into the set#but the costumes and hair and makeup look like shit which is unforgivable for a musical

I just watched the gladiator 2 trailer and i am surprised to find out it is getting a lot of hate over details.
Clearly, the ones complaining have no idea of the original batshit insane concept for a sequel thankfully scrapped years ago.
#the use of modern music has a lot to do with the standard for blockbuster trailers settled by the mcu#I understand that can feel a bit odd for an historical epic-sword and sandal film#but it has to do with how trailers for blockbuster films are conceived now#gladiator 2#I liked it reminds me of the sword and sandal revival vibe that the original one launched
