Fashioned out of green diorite, the twelve-angled stone is part of the Lienzo Pétreo wall in Cuzco, an inward leaning wall that encircles the now-destroyed Palace of Hatunrumiyoc. Comprised of multiple massive stone blocks, the wall was built without the aid of mortar or any kind of binding material. Each block was cut to fit perfectly with every other surrounding block, requiring a painstaking amount of care and attention to detail. In fact, the joints of the wall are so precisely fashioned that even today, hundreds of years after it was first constructed, not even a single piece of paper can fit between any of the wall’s blocks.
While the entire wall is a sight to behold, the stone of twelve angles, so named for the twelve distinct cuts that form twelve corresponding joints, stands apart as the crown jewel of this geometric feat. It remains a popular attraction in the Peruvian city, and a longstanding testament to the Incas’ devotion to their craft.

WASHINGTON — 19 senators on Wednesday voted against sending Israel additional American military equipment — the first-ever rebuke of its kind in Congress, and a signal of how frustration has grown in Washington as Israeli forces have pummeled Gaza with near-total support from President Joe Biden. That group of Democratic and independent senators voted against sending Israel $61 million worth of high explosive mortar rounds. All but one of them, Sen. George Helmy (D-N.J.), also voted to reject shipping Israel $774 million worth of tank rounds, which its military has used in attacks on children and aid groups. Both tranches of equipment are part of a package of American-Israeli arms deals Biden unveiled in August. The overwhelming majority of the chamber, including all Republicans, still voted to allow the arms deals to proceed. Still, the number represented a significant stand against Biden and a challenge to the idea that support for Israel is beyond question. And notably, some centrist legislators and peers who have issued relatively little criticism of Israel backed the proposal, like Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.).
Two previous efforts to publicly rally senators against Biden’s policy — proposals to require greater scrutiny of how foreign countries use U.S. weapons and to mandate a State Department report on Israel’s human rights record — received the endorsement of 18 and 12 senators, respectively. Wednesday’s votes on arms for Israel also included a motion to block $262 million in American bomb kits for the country. Those kits, known as Joint Direct Attack Munitions or JDAMS, have repeatedly been used in strikes that killed civilians. But some who defend exporting them claim they make airstrikes more precise — an argument that appeared to have some purchase among legislators. 17 senators voted against the bomb kits. Critics of Israel’s U.S.-backed offensive in Gaza knew they were never going to actually secure a majority of votes. But while acknowledging the GOP’s unwillingness to question Israel and the intensely pro-Israel views also held by a large proportion of Democrats, skeptics of the Israeli campaigns instead sought to demonstrate a sizeable degree of opposition to continued U.S. involvement in the wars.

The Biden administration pushed hard to convince senators to keep endorsing arms deals for Israel. On Tuesday, the White House sent a document of talking points to Congress that claimed lawmakers who voted for the bills blocking the sales would be aiding Hamas, HuffPost revealed. The administration also dispatched Secretary of State Tony Blinken to Capitol Hill for a briefing with legislators prior to the vote.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the nation’s largest pro-Israel lobby, called the legislation “dangerous” and urged constituents to contact their senators to oppose it; it ran ads with that message in 17 states. Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Michael Herzog, also visited Congress on Wednesday. [...] An AIPAC-aligned group focused on countering criticism of Israel among Democrats, Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI), also sought to minimize how many votes the bills can win. “The Biden Administration confirmed that Israel is adhering to the standards set by the United States for humanitarian aid into Gaza,” DMFI argued. Aid organizations and experts – including inside the U.S. government — have repeatedly challenged the Biden administration’s assessments of Israeli conduct, however, and say the humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening rather than improving.
18 courageous Democratic Senators, including Sens. Durbin, Warren, Sanders, Ossoff, and Warnock, voted to give AIPAC the middle finger by refusing to send Israel Apartheid State more US military equipment and not waste more taxpayer money in the process.

US once again vetoes UN ceasefire resolution on Gaza, rejects effort to block arms sales to Israel
The US on Wednesday vetoed a UN resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The other 14 members of the UN Security Council voted in favour of the resolution.
US vetoes fourth UN Security Council Gaza ceasefire resolution
The resolution, the latest of many Gaza ceasefire resolutions to reach the Security Council, called for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” and the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.” However, the US said it disagreed with the demand for an “unconditional ceasefire” that “did not result in the release of hostages.”
Other member countries expressed their disappointment at the failure of the resolution. The representative of China noted that “insisting on a precondition for a ceasefire is tantamount to giving the green light to continue the war.”
The observer for Palestine shared similar disappointment, saying that “this veto is a dangerous signal to Israel that it can go ahead with its plans.” This is the fourth ceasefire resolution the US has vetoed in the Security Council since October 7 last year. A US-backed resolution endorsing the implementation of a three-phase ceasefire plan was passed in June, but little has changed in the conflict since then.
The UN resolution, which would have also demanded the unimpeded flow of aid into Gaza and rejected “any attempt to starve the Palestinians,” failed in light of recent UN reports that northern Gaza has received virtually no aid for the past 40 days and that Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war.
Senate motions blocking arms sales to Israel fail, but pick up Democrat support
The Senate voted Wednesday on Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders’ attempt to block a series of planned US arms sales to Israel.
Eighteen Democrats voted to block the transfer of $774 worth of tank shells, 19 Democrats sought to block the sale of $61 million worth of mortar shells, and 17 Democrats sought to stop the sale of $262 worth of Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM).
All Republican senators present and a 51-member Democratic majority rejected all three joint resolutions of dissent, led by progressive Senator Bernie Sanders, which were known in advance to be dead on arrival due to bipartisan support for Israel’s offensive against Hamas.
But the vote underscored the growing discomfort among Democrats over the IDF’s campaign in the Gaza Strip and the party split it has caused.
A Sanders-backed resolution in January to freeze US aid to Israel unless the State Department reports within 30 days on alleged Israeli human rights abuses in the Gaza Strip received just 10 Democratic votes, although some senators may have voted with the November election in mind.
Much of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million has been displaced and the U.S. has warned of the possibility of famine after more than a year of fighting sparked by a Hamas offensive on October 7 that killed about 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostages. Hamas officials say the Israeli offensive has killed more than 43,922 Palestinians.

You know what, fuck it. I can't sleep, so here's everything wrong with me from my head down to my feet.
In short, I have ADHD, clinical depression, am on the autism spectrum, hypothyroidism, mild red/green colorblindness, photophobia/photosensitivity of both my eyes and skin, hyposmia, constricted sinuses, tongue-tied, Ehlers Danlos syndrome, lactose intolerance, cellulose intolerance, knocked knees, and tibial torsion. And then secondarily as a result of all that I have tactile hypersensitivity, mild anxiety, insomnia, postural-orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, chronic acute muscle and joint pain, irritable bowels, unstable knees, and many, many more issues I'm probably forgetting.
Oh and I'm severely overweight and my immune system sucks.

I have severe inattentive ADHD that I've had since at least early childhood, clinical depression that I've had since puberty, secondary anxiety as a byproduct of the two (accelerated thoughts plus predisposition to negativity leads to catastrophizing), and heightened tactile sensitivity due to being on the Autism spectrum, which presents its own set of hurdles. I also have struggled with insomnia my whole life as a byproduct of my ADHD, and am hypothyroid, meaning my thyroid (the organ that produces various non-sex hormones) doesn't respond enough when signalled.
As for my eyes, I'm color vision deficient, specifically having a deficiency in red cones; I get headaches in areas lit only by red light thanks to my rods and cones disagreeing on how dark it is, making my pupils repeatedly dilate and contract. I'm also extremely photosensitive in both my eyes and skin, likely related to ASD, but it's hard to prove that. Being in brightly lit areas hurts my eyes, and being in direct, unfiltered sunlight causes me mild physical pain akin to hovering your hand over an active electric cooktop. This happens even when it's objectively not that hot, but heat does make it worse.
With regards to my nose and mouth, I have an extremely weak sense of smell and have had such for as long as I can remember. This is directly the result of getting multiple sinus infections as a kid, which I still get a few times a year, thanks to the bad sinuses I inherited from both sides. I also get pre-storm headaches like a living barometer thanks to how sensitive they are to atmospheric presure changes. I'm also tongue-tied, which means I can't pronounce some sounds, can't press my tongue on the roof of my mouth, or even stick it out. Also can't move my upper lip independently for what that's worth.
As kind of an "every body region" problem, I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that makes every tissue in my body that uses collagen fibers less rigid, making everything elastic instead, regardless of whether it should be. For me this means I have hypermobile joints that also love to dislocate, flat feet with no arches, unstable blood pressure that drops if my blood vessels expand too quickly (such as from changing position too quickly or having ny heart rate jump suddenly), digestive issues and sudden cases of loose stools, and lots and lots of chronic (recurring) and acute (severe) muscle and joint pain. I've oft described having EDS being like living in a house built from rotted wood and watered down concrete and mortar. The base building blocks of all my tissues and organs are inherently malformed, and there's nothing I can do to fix it.
Down to my gut, aside from the GI issues from EDS, I'm intolerant to lactose and cellulose. For the former it's excruciatingly painful if I consume dairy without a ton of lactaid, and can even take me out of commission for a whole day or two after being exposed. I'll experience bloating, muscle aches, and brain fog to name just a few issues. For the latter, cellulose, which is the plant fiber found in high quantities in celery, lettuce, cabbage, but present in all plants, my response varies from severe cramps to no reaction whatsoever, entirely dependent on my current gut bioflora. Best case scenario, and recent experiences, are that I just cannot digest it at all and it passes through untouched. And yes I mean untouched.
Down to my legs, I have knocked knees, meaning my lower legs bow outward and do not touch when my legs are together, and I have tibial torsion in both tibias, meaning the front bone in my calves twists inwards, making my kneecaps point outwards and my feet point inwards towards each other.
And yeah. Because I have numerous obstacles to exercise and a fucked endocrine system, I'm seriously overweight to the point it's stressing my liver. And my immune system sucks major ass, I get sick multiple times a year and stay sick for days to a week at a time.
My body is just. Shit. I struggle to love it because it brings me so much pain. It's not my main reason for lack of faith, but my own existence makes it difficult for me to believe in a loving god.

Carneline had known Clover Hill’s old town hall was in bad shape from the bid documents. On her walkthrough with Rio a few weeks ago, even more suspicions had been raised. But now, the disintegrating chunk of limestone that had fallen off the cornice and into her hand confirmed it: she was going to be spending a lot more time in Clover Hill than she had initially planned. “Jesus Christ.”
“I’ve never seen limestone this bad,” Bruno murmured. Oceanic’s chief masonry superintendent carefully set the piece of stone down on the scaffold. “This whole cornice is going to have to be checked.”
Checking the structural integrity of a city block’s worth of limestone was definitely not covered in their contract. Carneline chewed on the inside corner of her mouth as she ran a hand across the sugaring stone and watched millennia-old sand crumble into her palm. “Is this the only bad news?”
“Oh no,” Bruno said in a voice far too cheery for her liking as he pushed to his feet. “This mortar is definitely hot.”
Asbestos remediation was also definitely not in their contract.
She cast a desperate glance along the joints. “Are you sure?”
“Yup.” He pointed to an area where the mortar was exposed. “Look close. You can see the fibers.”
Carneline looked and, sure enough, there were the telltale threads amongst the cement, lime, and sand. Fuck. “Does Rio know?”
Bruno shook his head.
She snapped a couple of photos on her phone and turned for the scaffold stair. “Are xe still documenting in the lobby?”
“I think so.”
“Good. I’ll send xem up.”
The metal stairs squeaked as Carneline made her way down them, eyeing the brick and stone of the Romanesque Revival building with far more suspicion than before. The facade clearly hadn’t been washed in two decades. The window sills were covered in black atmospheric discoloration, and the blue-green haze of cupric staining streaked down major crevices. On the brick and stone walls, there were long stretches of jointing completely devoid of mortar and one of the brackets was missing entirely.
She stopped two decks down and took a moment to admire the town. This was Oceanic’s first project this far south. They mostly stuck to projects in Baymill, but her dad had wanted to expand into other markets, so here she was forty feet in the air above a town she could see the other side of from the scaffold. The five-story town hall towered over most of the rest of the buildings, but fit in perfectly amongst the clusters of various historic structures downtown. Its renovation was long overdue, but Carneline hoped Clover Hill would find it worth it in the end.
From her perch, she could see the expanse of the park, with its quaint little gazebo and beautifully kept grounds. A bit farther she spied the currently unlit marquee of an old movie theater and a neon sign belonging to local diner. It was a beautiful town, and as much as she could lean on the scaffold railing and look out over the little town covered in the fresh leaves of spring for hours, she had a job to do.
She tore herself away from the view and continued down the scaffold to the lobby. The first time she’d seen it, Carneline had been struck almost speechless by the beauty of its wrought iron doors, scagliola-clad pilasters, and massive crystal chandelier. Now it barely registered. She hurried through the plywood-covered lobby until she found her assistant project manager sprawled indelicately across the floor.
Rio was an acquired taste Carneline wasn’t quite sure she had acquired yet; mildly competent, incredibly anxious, and graced with the aggravating tendency to lose the plot at the slightest provocation. Still, xe tried, which was more than Carneline could say of half of Oceanic’s field staff.
“Good morning, Rio.”
Rio startled, and practically levitated off the floor in a cloud of dust almost definitely from the plaster demo. Xe was absolutely covered in the stuff, and Rio hurriedly stuffed xemself back into xyr gloves and sheepishly brushed down xyr front. “Good—good morning, Carneline. I—I didn’t know you were on site.”
“I was walking the cornice with Bruno.”
“Oh.”
“How is it going down here?”
Xe grimaced and gestured at the ground. “It’s—uh. The stone’s really cracked.”
Bits of torn painter’s tape crawled across the marble below them like blown blue cherry blossom petals. Carneline crouched, and Rio angled the beam of xyr flashlight so she could see the spidery lines coursing through. Great. “These are going to shatter the second Bruno tries to take them out.”
“That’s what he said, too.”

Rio shook xyr head.
“When you are done down here, I need you to go up and document everything before we touch it. Do you have your profile gauges with you?”
“They’re in my car.”
“Good. Bruno will be up there for a little bit. Find…” She hedged, thinking of the worn-down status of the cornice. “Find the least broken stone and take a profile.”
 Xe nodded. “Okay.”
“And wear an N95. The mortar is hot and everything up there is crumbling.”
Rio’s dark eyes got comically wide behind xyr safety glasses. “Oh shit.”
Her sentiments exactly. “Do you have any questions?” Xe shook xyr head again. “Alright. Call me if something comes up.”
“Will do!”
Carneline left Rio to xyr marble documentation and slipped out the west entrance to find the jobsite trailer. When she pulled the door open, she found Josie bent over the conference table—which was really just four folding tables pushed together in the center of the room—studying the reference drawings.
“Good morning,” she greeted as the door snapped shut behind her.
“Good morning,” Josie replied as she turned the page of the drawings. “Headed out? Help yourself to some coffee before you leave.”
Carneline startled at the kind, but unexpected offer. “Oh. Thank you.”
“To-go cups are on top of the fridge.”
“I actually don’t drink hot coffee,” she replied sheepishly.
“Don’t drink hot coffee?” Josie asked, looking up from her drawings with a grin that Carneline had discovered seemed permanently glued to her face. “Don’t tell me…you’re like Baylee and only drink cold brew.”
Carneline gave an awkward little laugh, not liking the familiarity with which Josie talked to her about her sister. People always did that, acted like they knew her because they knew her sister or father. Another one of the ‘perks’ of a family business. “Guilty as charged.”
 “Well, I’m one step ahead of you. There’s cold brew in the fridge.”
The offer was tempting. Carneline considered for a moment, but finally decided against it. If she got caught in traffic, which was likely considering the time, she would definitely have to stop and pee. “Not today. I have to drive back to Baymill after this, but thank you.”
“Any time.”
Josie finally straightened up fully and leaned casually on the white plastic folding table, hooking her thumbs into her jeans. She was an unreasonably attractive figure, taller than Carneline, with kind brown eyes and a sharp fade that put every short-haired worker on the site to shame. In some universe she might have been Carneline’s type—if Josie hadn’t worked for the general contractor paying them to fix Clover Hill’s historic town hall.
Carneline hedged. “I…actually wanted to talk to you about something.”
Josie’s voice remained impressively neutral. “Oh?”
“Yes…” She pulled her phone out of her pocket. “We have some problems.”
“Define ‘problems.’”
“That depends, do you want the least expensive issue or most expensive issue first?”
“Least expensive.” Josie flashed a luminous smile. “Warm me up.”
Carneline pulled up the photos she had taken of the floor and passed her phone over for her to see. “The marble in the foyer is full of cracks. It’s going to shatter when we try to take it out.”
“Architects were ridiculous to think we could salvage the whole floor,” Josie said with a disbelieving scoff. “A-hundred-and-twenty-year-old marble doesn’t come up like that.”
“No, it does not,” Carneline confirmed.
Josie handed her phone back, her face suddenly all business. The shift was jarring, to say the least. “How much is this going to cost?”
“I can’t say for certain, but it will be a decent amount.”
Josie sighed. “Great. You submitted replacement marble, right?”
“A few weeks ago.”
Josie ran a hand through her hair. “Submit an RFI and we’ll see what the architects have to say.”
“Was planning to.”
“Thanks.” She took a sip from a nearby thermos. “What’s the bigger, badder bill?”
Carneline gave Josie a significant look. “Have you been up to the cornice?”
“Recently?”
“Yes.”
“I walked it at the beginning,” she replied with a frown. “Is there something wrong with it?”
If only. “The mortar’s full of asbestos and the stone is crumbling. A piece fell off in my hand.”
Josie inhaled in shock. “Oh fuck.”
“I don’t want anyone from my crew touching it until the town knows.”
 “Understandable. Do you think it’s going to need to be replaced?”
Carneline glanced around the trailer to make sure they were alone. “Off the record, I think you might want to figure out where Clover Hill has a million dollars stashed for a rainy day.”
 “It’s that bad?”
“The building is a hundred and twenty years old,” she said with a shrug. “I’m surprised it lasted this long.”
Josie’s face went grim. “Got it. Thanks for the heads up.”
“Not a problem.” She hesitated, not sure if Josie could handle a third thing on her plate. “There is…one more thing?”
“If there’s a massive structural issue that means we need to evacuate the building, please turn around and leave now,” Josie joked weakly. “Let me die in the collapsed building in peaceful ignorance.”
Carneline gave a dismissive snort. “Nothing so drastic.”
Josie brightened considerably. “Great! What’s up?”
“You need to have someone go into the main hall and put down sweeping compound. Rio’s rolling around on the floor in there looking like the Ghost of Christmas Past. To say nothing of the silica hazard.”
Josie was already grabbing her hard hat off the table. “I’ll do it myself.”
“Thanks. I’ll see you in a few weeks.”
“See you then!” Josie trotted off out the door, Carneline close behind her.
She checked her watch: three-o’clock.  Plenty of time to make it back to the city without hitting traffic. She pulled her hard hat off the second she hit the parking lot, shaking her curly red hair out so she could tie it back up once in the car. She’d get out of town, update her dad on the way home, then spend a quiet night with her plants before she had to go to bed.
Her phone rang. The song barely got four notes in before she picked up. “You’re psychic. I was just about to call you.”
“Are you done at Clover Hill?” Warren Triana asked gruffly.
“About to head home now, just have to throw my stuff in the ba—” She stopped dead a few paces from her trunk, eyes taking in the noticeable sink to her right rear bumper. “Fuck.”
Her father’s business tone instantly switched to fatherly concern. “What? What is it?”
She scowled and threw her hard hat in the back a tad more aggressively than was necessary. “It’s nothing,” she sighed. “I just have a flat.”

Post-Trespasser Emmaera
I wanted to make a quick post about Emma's prosthetic since the topic (re: that poll) is going around at the moment.
I based her prosthetic on the ones Götz von Berlichingen wore in the early 1500s. Götz was a knight/mercenary who lost his right arm at the elbow in 1504 when "enemy cannon fire jolted von Berlichingen’s blade against himself" (Source). He commissioned his prosthesis from a local blacksmith, and the prosthesis in question had hinged fingers which were capable of locking in place in blocks of two. von Berlichingen used his iron hand to wield a sword (rather successfully) and eventually commissioned a second prosthesis which was capable of grasping smaller objects (including a quill; he wrote a whole autobiography which wasn't published until 1731, well after his death).
But more to the point here: Götz von Berlichingen's arm was an incredible example of engineering even at its time. The design of its second iteration (pictured below) was driven entirely by his experiences with the first. He wanted the second version to have leather straps to hold it more firmly in place and fingers that were capable of more exact articulation as well as wrist joints that could pivot.

When I decided to write Emma post-Trespasser, I did a lot of research on what it was like to live with one hand, but von Berlichingen's story was the one that stuck with me the most. I spent a lot of time looking at these schematics and trying to figure out how Dagna could make something like this in the Dragon Age universe.
Because the off-hand motion in the game's animation is usually one that's supporting the staff, not specifically twisting it, I thought it made the most sense to conceptualize something along the same lines as the second iteration above. A mage would need something capable of pivoting/angling with the movement of the staff, and that's pretty easily achieved with hinges, as seen above, and (though ball bearings weren't invented until 1794) ball bearings could allow the hand to pivot 360 degrees (something you, uh, maybe wouldn't want if your hand is locked onto the staff). The fingers, elbow, and wrist are lockable using pins in the joints and a buttons on the back of the hand release each respective set of joints.
I like the idea of them having to go through several iterations of prostheses to find out what actually works for the Inquisitor (Dagna is a genius, but this isn't necessarily the sort of project she's worked on before) with consistent input from the person using it, just as von Berlichingen was able to adjust the second iteration of his own prosthesis to better fit his needs as a fighter. It is something she has to actually train with to use effectively, of course, just like using any new tool in combat.
Now---she does have a more ostensibly fantasy version that has hinged fingers which grasp when she manipulates the lyrium in them with magic. She doesn't use this version often because, frankly, the lockable fingers of her regular prosthesis can do anything she would really need them for and having to expend constant concentration to use the other prosthesis isn't really worth it to her (though she appreciated the thought).
The first one is for combat and when she is in her workroom (it's easier to grind herbs if she's holding the mortar still) and she uses it almost exclusively if she's going to be wearing a prosthetic at all. Usually, due to damage her residual limb has taken from the combat prosthesis, she just hangs out without any prosthesis. In her home, the chairs are modified with a mouthpiece so her hound can pull the chairs away from the table for her, and there are a lot of other ways the house has been set up as she needs. She has various other tools she can use to, for example, hold paper steady while she writes. But when she needs it---and since she went through her vigilante period, she has used the prosthesis to fight---she does have the arm Dagna made her.
Anyways---I obviously think von Berlichingen is fascinating (I haven't even touched on him kidnapping nobles or that his hand is part of his hometown's crest), so I recommend reading more about him in general. Concrete Blocks - Manufacturing, Classification & Uses
     Concrete blocks are nowadays replacing bricks in masonry construction, notably in many multi-storeyed buildings. They are available in three types namely solid, hollow and cellular, widely used for the construction of filler walls and boundary walls in RC framework.
Concrete blocks are usually made in large sizes to make blockwork faster and consume less cement in joints than the brickwork. If the percentage of the voids is more than 25%, then they are hollow blocks and blocks with voids less than 25% are only perforated blocks.
The cellular concrete blocks are generally referred to as lightweight aerated concrete blocks. All these blocks are extensively used for compound walls and non-loadbearing walls.
Hollow blocks are specially made for loadbearing walls, which are useful in reducing a dead load of masonry in buildings. Blocks can also be with cement and sand called cement-sand blocks or with cement and soil called soil-cement blocks which are of low strength and use for low-cost construction.
Manufacturing of Concrete Blocks
    BIS recommends a fineness modulus of the combined aggregate between 3.6 to 4 and coarse aggregates used are of size 6 to 12 mm. Lean mixes up to 1:8 are generally used. Concrete mix for concrete blocks should not be richer than one part of the cement to six parts of the volume of combined aggregate.

Concrete blocks can be handmade and also machine-made. The cast block is then cured in a water tank or yard for at least 14 days (water need to be changed at least every 4 days).
After curing, the blocks are dried for 4 weeks before being used in masonry construction. They should be stacked with voids in the horizontal direction to facilitate easy drying, or they should be steam cured and dried.
The whole process allows the complete shrinkage of the block to take place they are laid on the wall, which is very important for strong walls.
Classification of Concrete Blocks
Hollow concrete blocks
     Open and Closed cavity-type hollow concrete blocks are classified into three grades:
Grade A - They possess a minimum density of 1500 kg/m³ and are used for load-bearing walls.
Grade B - They have a density below 1500 kg/m¬³ and used for load-bearing walls.
Grade C - These blocks are used for non-load bearing walls and have density more than 1000 kg/m³.
All these blocks are available in decorative facings like fluted facing to provide artistic effects.

Solid concrete blocks
     They should be manufactured for specific concrete strength of 4.0 and 5.0 N/mm² in 28 days. These blocks are used as load-bearing walls and have a density of not less than 1800 kg/m³.

Paver blocks
     These blocks are solid concrete blocks of different shapes specially made for exterior ground paving on sidewalks, parking lots, driveways, petrol pumps, industrial floors, etc.

AAC Blocks
     AAC blocks refer as Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Blocks. These blocks are also termed as light-weight hollow blocks.
They are prepared as solid blocks from cement, water and materials like ground sand, pulverized fly ash together with additives to aerate and stabilize the air bubbles.
The final result is a mixture of thick liquid which is then poured into steel moulds to form large cakes. After some time, the mixture sets and ready to cut into a serious of individual blocks of required size using taut steel wires.

Very light blocks for partition and moderate-weight blocks for light loadbearing walls can be obtained from aac blocks. These blocks do not shrink on drying as the material is obtained by autoclaving.
The autoclaved cement product is crystalline, which is different from the product obtained by normal wet curing or by ordinary steam curing.
Sizes and Tolerances
The nominal dimensions of concrete block as per BIS are as follows:
 Length - 600, 500, 450 or 400 mm
 Height - 100 or 200 mm
 Width - 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250 or 300 mm
Actual sizes will be less than 10 mm of mortar thickness. For Concrete and Hollow concrete blocks nominal length 390 mm and height 190 mm. The thickness for loadbearing walls is 190 mm, compound walls 140 mm and for filler walls 90 mm.
These dimensions can easily be achieved in machine-made blocks than handmade blocks. The width of blocks use for load-bearing walls is 200 mm and for parapet or filler walls is 100 mm.
Points to Remember:
The mortar strength should not be more than the strength of the blocks. With high mortar strength, cracks will be less and very large, but with low mortar strength, cracks will be small and distributed.
 We should use only blocks that are cured properly for at least 14 days and dried for 4 weeks to avoid shrinkage during construction.
 We should not wet the blocks while placing in masonry construction.

 Freshly-made and uncured concrete blocks should never be allowed on the work.
 Blockwork, particularly ordinary cement sand blocks and soil-cement blocks should not be used as loadbearing walls for concrete slab roof which favours to expand and contract with temperature.
 The maximum difference in sizes allowed is ±5 mm in length and ±3 mm in height and width.
 They should be protected from rains while being stored as they absorb moisture by wetting and shrinking on drying.
     The main disadvantage of concrete blocks is shrinkage due to the movement of moisture content which is not present in bricks. As these blocks are much larger than bricks, any foundation movement will cause blockwork to crack more than the brickwork.
