For as much as I love snow—and as indescribably beauitful snow-cloaked trees are—these wet, heavy snowfalls can be so damaging. The original part of our house was built in the mid-1800s, and a semi-circle of Norway Maples was planted nearby, likely soon after. Their average lifespan is 150 years...and sadly, two have recently died. The snow brought down some large limbs on others—we're hoping they'll survive the loss. Our black walnut trees may be even older, their lifespan can surpass 250 yrs. Altho' persimmon trees have a much shorter lifespan—an average of just 60 yrs.—the 5th largest known one (DCNR confirmed) in Pennsylvania is on our little farm. Every substantial snowfall brings a mix of excitement, and worry for these awesome old trees.

something that pains me to no end is the knowledge that it would be completely unfeasible for me to plant american bittersweet, since asiatic bittersweet is so utterly dominant over my local environment, being well adapted to disturbance (human habitation), a vigorous grower, spread far and wide via berries the birds eat, and the hybrids of american and asiatic bittersweet have the potential to be even more aggressive. sigh............

Bombs away!
Our black walnut trees are having their biennial moment.
Let me pause here for brief grammar lesson. I had to look this up before I wrote that opening sentence. While it's fresh in my mind, I'll pass it along.
Biennial (with an "e") means every other year.
Both biannual (with an "i") and semiannual mean twice a year.
I hear that some black walnut trees push out a crop every year, ours are on the every-other-year schedule. The 2023 bombardment has begun. The nuts, in their green hulls, already litter the ground behind my pole barn.
The squirrels can have every single one of them. As much as I like the idea of harvesting nature's bounty, I have no intention of going after the nuts.
Even if I had the intention, I lack the endurance; after two battles with the slimy hulls and the concrete-like shells, I now accept my limitations.

Theres a black walnut near the place im staying, and as i walked to this tree i saw two giant birds circling overhead, they screeched like a big olll hawk. Then i walked a little further, sat by a lake and watched a beautiful doe hop across the sewage pond bank, and into the forest
