Blind Date With a Fandom
Looking for something new? Start here!
Genre: Mystery/Science-Fiction
Vibes: WWDITS; Dead Boy Detectives; OFMD
Synopsis: Todd Brotzman is, to put it bluntly, a 33 year old loser. He wakes one morning to find his landlord totaling his car with a baseball bat, and watches a stray dog wander the sidewalk as he takes the bus to work. His job as a bellhop is boring… right up until he takes the elevator up to the penthouse and sees himself standing at the end of the hallway. Inside the penthouse is a murder scene; every one of those men was murdered by a hammerhead shark. His day doesn’t end there though, and when he gets home he finds a man climbing in through his window. His name is Dirk Gently; he’s a detective, and Todd is going to help him solve the murders whether he wants to or not… it’s up to the universe, not him, and the universe has decided.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (2016) has all sorts of characters. Psychic vampires, not-so-psychic detectives, a reality bending child and a massive government conspiracy. If you’re looking for something well written (and only 18 episodes long) this is the show for you.

The Ineffable Detective Agency Presents: What Happened in Before the Beginning?
Hello Good Omens clue hunters and detectives! I’m super excited to share what we’ve discovered in Before the Beginning. Read on if you want to see what no one else has spotted yet!
To put a long story short, something is “up” about Good Omens - Season 2 in particular. While the eagle-eyed have documented a number of odd things in Season 2 already (summarised here), I’ve never seen anyone call into question what was presented during the Before the Beginning scene. Let’s take a closer look shall we?
Remember this scroll to start the nebula? Well, guess what - it changes!
Here’s the first scroll we see on screen, I’m going to call this the “new” scroll. Note the straight edges and completely pristine look, like brand new paper:
Then suddenly, here’s what it looks like as they start up the nebula:
Whoa, that’s looking pretty old and ragged! It’s got rips, a bit of discolouration, several wavy bends running through it. That’s a significantly more worn scroll than we were just shown. Let’s show that in close up just to be sure:
Yup, that’s certainly not meant to be the same scroll!
During this scene, the old scroll is seen again during the close up of Aziraphale holding it. However, once Crowley instructs him to put it down, it’s the new scroll again. (And then at this point it disappears into hammerspace like in a cartoon, or drifts off into space, never to be seen again).
So... there's TWO scrolls?
Well, yes, but also, no. If you're wondering, “Are they both real scrolls? Are you telling me they had two on set?” the short answer is no, this was done with VFX. To explain why we know this, I’m going to hand over to our resident Art Director, @noneorother:
Hi all, @noneorother here. Sure. So it's mostly to do with the shadow inside the scroll curls and under the right hand side curl. You can see when it's the real scroll that the shadows are all orange or brown, because of sub-surface scattering:
It happens when light partially passes through a thin porous object like skin or paper. So when the scroll is new, it's real. Where they've added "scroll is old now" VFX on top of the shots, it's very well tracked, but there's no more sub-surface scattering because it's VFX, not filmed. So the shadows are now base-black inside the curl and to the right hand side of the image. This is the VFX scroll here:
They already perfectly tracked the astronomy animation into the center of the scroll, so they had all that tracking info just sitting around. It wouldn't have been very expensive to add the "old scroll" the way they did it (the cheap and dirty way).
Thanks @noneorother! So there we have it folks, the Good Omens team have intentionally designed some shots with the old-looking VFX scroll and some without. They had the assets created for the old scroll and the tracking to place it correctly, so how could they possibly make the “mistake” of adding it sometimes but not others? This wasn’t a budget thing. If it were budget related, they wouldn’t have created the old scroll VFX in the first place.
Personally, I think this discontinuity was to tell us, the dedicated rewatchers, that what we initially saw in S2 was not the whole story. There is something else at play during S2. Something that, depending on what we find, may make S3 even more enjoyable.
So, why do this? Is this scene being conveyed from different perspectives? Are we viewing different characters’ memories of the same event? If so, why would that be important? Is someone tampering with past events? Did “Before the Beginning” happen multiple times and we’ve seen a spliced together version? What do you think?
One More Question...
The other question worth asking here (which Aziraphale helpfully asks for us) is “which way up” does the scroll go? Look closely at the central rings.
Is it the top version (small rings to the right)?
Or the lower version (small rings to the left)?
... and what happens if you create a nebula upside down, I wonder? Here I’m reminded of the Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square lyrics:
The moon that lingered over London Town Poor puzzled moon, he wore a frown How could he know we two were so in love The whole darn world seemed upside down
In a season where something is going "Down in the Up", and the answer to Gabriel’s mystery is achieved by turning the delivery box upside down, this is yet another up-down reversal we can add to the list!
..................................................................................
If you’ve been following our Good Omens posts up until now, you’ll be aware that this is not the only time scenes have been inconsistent or discontinuous. If this is new to you, please check out my summary post on Season 2 discontinuity here. For more of our posts, plus a collection of Clues and metas from all over the fandom, see here.
However, there is still more to come, so watch out for future updates. If you’re not currently puzzling over Good Omens and would like to join in, please do! We’d love to hear what you find - you can use the tag #ineffable mystery.

Dutiful and pristine, you were a model wife.
Delicate and gorgeous. Just how he liked you to be.
You were brought her to serve as his prize. His reward for years of watching you from afar, stalking you like a lions meal. And you, pure and kind-hearted, not once ever suspected a thing.
Dazai was your co-worker after all. A smart, handsome man with a positive future.
Back before this all, you were nothing but a mere fascination to not only him, but your peers as well. You were never offended or hesitant to answer questions others would have about you. How you came to be, whether you remember anything, and if those feathers of yours regrow.
You coped with everything by dissociating as much as possible. If you could believe hard enough - Dazai was still the Dazai you knew before. The man next to you who'd pout when ordered to finish his report, the one who would turn to you and try to flirt or make you giggle, knowing Kunikida would never dare give out to you.
How could anyone, after all? You only manifested a few years ago. What was it, eleven, or twelve. You can't remember. There was little you remember anyway.
The first few months with Dazai were a blur. You'd have blacked out for the majority of the day until he'd wake you up and force you to eat. If you'd refuse, he'd starve you until you'd beg.
You had tried to protest by going days without food or water but he always got his way in the end. You had to give in at some point.
The biggest obstacle was finding the guts to hate Dazai.
You were afraid to hate him. You were afraid to hate.
He'd treat you so gently and with love. Funnily enough, you blamed yourself for it all. You didn't know why or how, but you felt like if you had done things different, none of this would have happened.
Osamu was sweet. He always did what was right. You respected Kunikida and Fukuzawa immensely. If they trust Dazai, then so did you.
If you knew that you were a lamb handed to a wolf, maybe you would have ran much earlier.
Dazai did not show himself upfront. No. First, it was the mind games. The ghastly figures that would appear outside of your window in the form of blackened shadows, doors you remember closing being wide open when you return home, bangs and creaks around your home when you lived alone, your items disappearing from their usual spot, laundry vanishing completely, and countless mysterious messages from anonymous.
Second, it was you asking for help. You turned to who you admired best. The Armed Detective Agency. Ranpo scanned your phone. He read each message out loud before looking at you, then back down at your screen. He slid it back towards you. " There's nothing suspicious. It's just a prank. "
You felt relief. Ranpo had his ability, after all. The ability to figure out any mystery. He could not be wrong.
How dumb of you to think Ranpo would not be the first person Dazai would go to for his sick joke.
Third was the fever. It hit you like a brick. It was the first time you had been infected with a human illness. Dazai kindly offered to tend to you in his free-time, as everyone else was too busy. You were grateful that Dazai, an important member of the ADA, was sacrificing his time in helping you. He'd stop by almost every day and night to feed you and make sure you're alright. The more you drank that chalky water he'd give you daily before bed, the more you lost your ability to walk.
Fourth, was the inevitable. You waking up in a bed that was harder than yours. Upon observing around you, you realised you weren't in your house. And you don't recall ever sleeping next to Dazai. Naturally, you were afraid. You were in hysterics while he tried to calm you down, telling you stories on how it's safer for you to be here, and that you were an ungrateful bitch for not being grateful enough to him.
You didn't want to hear any of it. So? You were kept in his lovely basement.
There, you were badly treated. Sleeping on cold concrete and eating what scraps he'd leave on the floor for you like some animal - any form of resistance was met with harsh punishment.
You lacked survival instincts. You not once ever felt the need to. Working in the ADA, you were nothing but an accountant. You'd hear about the missions they'd go on, but to you it all seemed like the things you'd see in action films.
But this was real. The way your heart pounded in your ears every time you'd hear steps coming down and the way he'd tug your hair 'till your scalp would burn is something that the actors would never be able to portray properly.
It took you a while to realise you weren't going to make any progress by doing the opposite of what he wanted.
Though, you were admittedly conflicted.
You provided Dazai something interesting. If you let him use you, to spare yourself of his harsh punishments, would he get bored of you? Would he rid of you completely? Would he treat you more terribly to purposely make you act out just so he'd have a reason to strike you?
These were questions that would keep you up.
You couldn't be strong-willed for long. Hope that Kunikida or anyone else would come looking for you dwindled as the days went by and none would come but Dazai.
At some point, you had lost your voice for a while. In that period, Dazai took complete advantage of the fact. When you could do nothing but thrash and cry until you submit underneath him.
He'd pull out, collapse next to you and hold you close to his bandaged chest and apologise until he fell asleep with your hot breath against his skin.
Dazai had been your first time. He took an angel's virginity. You were frozen for the rest of the night. You were almost neutral to what had happened. You even wiped his tears away with your thumb. He apologised. He must surely be remorseful. He promised he wouldn't do it again.
You lost your halo that day.
'' Fetch me some water, I'm thirsty. "
His hand came off your head where it had been caressing.
You looked up at him through long lashes, slowly nodding your head and raising to unstable feet.
Ever since you were allowed to stay out of the basement, he's been helping you regain your ability to walk after the drugs had left your knees shaky.
Your movement was slow but gradual, at least.
If you wished to remain with Dazai, you'd have to obey him. And obey you did.
You fetched him his requested glass of water albeit spilling a tad bit on your way back, you presented him with it.
He peered in, then slouched back into the couch, gaze returning to the television screen. " I said orange juice. "
You were sure he said water.
" But you said water. " Your voice was meek compared to his.
" Are you saying I am lying? "
That shut you up.
You apologised, and travelled back to the kitchen to throw away the water and replace it with orange juice.
You'd bring it back, and he'd look at you with disappointment. " Why are you bringing me orange juice when I asked for apple juice? "
He sounded so convincing that you thought maybe you were mishearing. You held the orange juice in your hand tightly, apologised, and left to get the apple juice.
By the time you returned, you were shaking. The apple juice was dripping from the overfilled glass and onto the floor. You were trembling. " It's- It's apple juice. Because y-ou said.. "
Your gaze was so distant. You were so far away. You were no longer on this Earth. Dazai had to keep you grounded.
" You must be taking me for a fucking idiot. "
He slapped the glass right from your hand, your whole body jolted in shock when the glass shattered against the floor.
You two had just been cuddling on the couch, watching a noir movie like a happy couple would.
Dazai had to keep you grounded. He had to keep you on a leash lest you wander.
" Get over here. " He sighed out after a long pause. Instinctively, you answered, " No. "
It's been so long since you were punished. You didn't want to go back to them.
" I didn't do anything wrong ", your voice croaked out to reason. You should have figured at some point Dazai would get bored of a normal life style.
" I said get over here, Y/N, my patience is already running low. I'm not going to hit you. "
And no matter what you've been through, you'd wake up praying Dazai was kinder. He had overheard your nightly prayers one day and in an act of irony or sympathy - hung a cross over your bed.
You fiddled with the hem of your skirt before waddling to between his spread thighs. Hand reaching for your hip and guiding you down to sit on his lap, you avoided eye contact.
You were clearly afraid of being punished for something that was not your fault. You couldn't tell Dazai it wasn't your fault. That would be calling Dazai a liar. And that would get you hit. Good wives don't get hit.
True to his word, he did not raise his hand to you at all.
Once he opened his mouth to speak, you attentively turned to him. His training worked wonders on you. He made himself your God in a matter of months. You no longer worried your pretty little head on whether Kunikida would save you. All you had to do was clean around the house and prepare Dazai's meal - living to serve your husband.
" You've been such a good girl, don't ruin it with this, 'kay? " He didn't sound mad anymore, but you could still pick up on the fact he was not exactly happy with you either.
" Yes, 'samu. " You nod, toying with your fingers nervously.
" You're such a sweet wife. So dumb. So cute. Love seeing you panic. "
You bit your bottom lip at that, chewing on skin.
'' D'ya think It's about time we started our own family? "
You thought at first you didn't hear him properly. You knew you were trying to convince yourself so.
" Ahah.. " You were hesitant. He picked up on it. His dark brown eyes felt like lasers. " I don't think I can. I'd love to, 'samu, but I can't. "
He let go of his soft grasp on your hip to allow you to stand up.
It was 9pm. You should head to bed.
His silence and poker face felt foreboding.
" Goodnight, love. " You tried to remain cheerful.
You went to bed earlier than Dazai. You climbed into your shared bed after having taken your nightly medication.
You fluffed out your wings - once white, now grey - then tossed and turned until you slept.
" Hah.. hah.. "
The burning heat is what hit you first.
Confusion was second.
" Wakin' up, pretty baby? "
Your mouth opened by itself before your eyes did, and when you tried to speak, to ask what is going on, you let out a soft moan.
You feel something sink in deeper in your pussy, the wooden bed frame hitting against a wall. Oh.
" 'Samu! " Your eyes shot open upon realising what was happening. Dazai had not done this for a while. The room was dark. Judging by how dry your mouth was, you had been fast asleep for a while.
Dazai was propped on his knees between your thighs, naked from what you could make out.
You looked further down to realise that he had shoved his dick in you while you were asleep. Your nightgown was pulled up over your stomach and his hands were holding on loosely to your hips.
Your hand reached out to grip onto his wrist, your legs unable to close. " No, you said you were gonna be better, you said no more of this. " Oh, you sweet poor child.
" It's alright. " He responded casually, pulling out just to slam back in. Although your vision was limited, you could feel his piercing stare studying your contorting features. " Just this once, yeah? "
You remembered your conversation with Dazai earlier. The sudden question about having a child.
When you tightened around the base of his shaft, he knew what you were thinking.
" Don't get all scared, baby. You'd make an amazing mom. " He would bend down, his mouth next to your ear as he'd begin thrusting.
You lay unresponsive and silent, staring at the ceiling - your only solace.
His huffs, groans and sighs muffle themselves on your pillow, your body would temporarily jolt in spasms with each orgasm.
Dazai continued for hours.
At some point, your hands were tangled in messy brown hair, your mouth hung and your voice would plead for 'more', 'there', 'deeper'.
Your sweet husband never pulled you back when you drifted off to space with your longing gaze.
He barely even met you in the eye.
Dazai finished his rounds before you noticed. It was a period of him not touching you that made you turn your head sideways to meet him laying next to you, his chest still raising and falling as he'd regain his breath.
You hadn't moved your body.
Adjusted to the dark, you couldn't help but stare at the pitiful man who spoke nothing to you.
An emptiness weighed your heart down and the liquid love he had planted in you seeped - unwelcomed.
You still felt bad for him. Surely, definitely, this was not his fault.
" I'd like a girl. "
Your lips trembled, you smiled to hide it.
" Two.. daughters. "
The corners of your lips quivered with your fake expression. He could see your eyes gloss and your shivering body, blinking rapidly until your tears slid down.
You never did want children. Not with Dazai, at least. Not for another few years. Not here, not now, not with him. Not this Dazai.
He left you waiting for a while, until he rolled onto his back and looked up at the ceiling that enamoured you with amazement when he had made love to you.
" Yeah. "
He sounded uncertain, before continuing his response. You had expected it. All these years of feeling inadequate and dumb. You were proud to have grown accustomed to Dazai's routine, even if he had promised you months ago he had changed.
" 'm sorry. "
" I know. "

A Master of Distraction - Edogawa Ranpo x Reader
Pairing: Edogawa Ranpo x Reader (can be read as any gender, no pronouns used) Genre: fluff Word Count: 1 351 Warnings: established relationship Summary: Ranpo is trying to distract you from work Prompts: don’t do that - but A/N: First time writing for the sweetheart that is Ranpo
The sunbeams of the Japan autumn sun were falling in through the windows of the Armed Detective Agency, warming your back nicely as you were finishing up your most recent report.
It was a slow day. The air had begun cooling down from the summer heat, creating a comfortable temperature outside that allowed you to go strolling to work in your favourite pair of jeans and a nice shirt under a new cardigan. In the café downstairs you had picked up the morning order for the office, your own favourite drink, black coffee for Yosano and Kunikida, café late for Atsushi, orange juice for Kenji and Kyōka, cappuccino for Tanizaki, and some extra sweet hot chocolate for Ranpo. You still had grabbed two more sugar sachets for Ranpo, never knowing if today was the day he felt like he needed an extra sugar rush, and had headed up to the office.
Everything was as always, Kunikida was bustling about, busy as ever. Atsushi was giving his best to type down his report, his fingers still not used to the keyboard. Tanizaki and Kyōka had headed out for a case, Yosano was locked away in her office and Dazai was lounging on the couch, humming some song you had a feeling you didn’t want to try to understand the lyrics to.
While you own fingers flew over the keyboard, you felt someone approach you from behind you, their shadow blocking the warm sun on your back, and a moment later arms wrapped around your shoulders, and a head dropped against your nape.
“What are you doing,” you sighed, looking up from your screen, trying to get a glimpse of the soft black hair that brushed against your cheek.
“Boooored,” Ranpo’s whiny voice sounded against your skin, his warm breath sending a shiver down your spine as he exhaled against your neck. “There’s nothing happening.”
“You’ve solved two cases in the past-” you glanced at the clock on your screen, “three and a half hours. I wouldn’t call that nothing.”
“I didn’t even leave the office,” Ranpo whined. “My brilliance is torturous. I cannot ever be satisfied.”
“Yes, torturous indeed,” you mumbled to yourself as Ranpo’s arms tightened around your body.
It didn’t bother you, that he was so physically affectionate, never had. He generally didn’t mind clinging onto people, but since you had joined the agency, you had become his new favourite person, it seemed.
In the first week alone, it had gone so far that Kunikida had asked when you would marry. In the years that had passed since then, it had become an usual occurrence that Ranpo would cling to you, or even pull you to sit in his lap when you were taking a break in the café below the office. And that meant a lot, considering it made it harder for him to get cake into his mouth. It had even become normal for him to share his sweets with you, which had surprised Fukuzawa enough the first time he had seen it, to choke on nothing.
Everyone else assumed, that that was it, that Ranpo simply liked having you around him, and you, with an angel’s patience took his platonic affection without ever getting angry at him for clearly overstepping any personal boundary there had ever been.
What the others didn’t know, was that it was anything but platonic. You weren’t sure when exactly it had started, him pulling you tighter against himself, your hands sneaking around his neck or into his hair, his lips no longer just breathing against the shell of your ear but kissing your nape or the junction of your shoulder. But it had happened, and now it was impossible to imagine falling asleep without him hugging you against him, clinging to you like a little koala.
It was not necessarily a secret you had kept from the rest of the agency, and you were quite certain both Fukuzawa and Dazai had long caught onto your relationship with the master detective, but it also was not something you discussed with anyone. It was nobody’s business, and since Ranpo had been like this with you since the start, nobody paid it much mind.
Well, you paid it much mind, especially, when Ranpo kissing along your nape distracted you from your work.
“Ranpo…”
He hummed, blowing warm air against your skin, before pressing another kiss against your spine.
“You’re distracting me,” you told him, earning a kiss behind the ear this time. “I mean it, can you wait with this until I’m done here?”
“Don’t do that,” he whispered against your ear, his voice sounding almost wet as if he were about to cry.
“But-”
“Don’t send me away.”
Clicking your tongue, you pulled away from him enough, to look at his face. Indeed, his eyes were squeezed together like always, but a heartbreaking expression of sorrow was written all over his face. Heartbreaking, truly. And fake.
You gave him a stern look. “We have 30min until lunchbreak. You can wait that long.”
His devastated expression melted into the mischievous one you knew had been hidden underneath.
“But I’m bored! What will you have me do in those thirty minutes, I wonder?”
“Either you go and bother Dazai, or you find your self-restraint and behave,” you told him bluntly, a bluntness that was as fake as his sorrowful expression a few seconds ago. You could never be too strict with him, but you really wanted to finish the report before lunchbreak, mostly so you could spend it relaxing with him.
“Oh, how cruel you are,” he sighed dramatically, letting go of where he had still been clinging to your neck and walked over to his desk.
For a moment you really believed he was about to bother Dazai instead of you, or return to his own desk, when he grabbed his chair and pulled it next to you. As soon as he had sat down, he leant over, resting his forehead against your shoulder.
“You always need body contact, hm,” you asked, reaching up and running your hand through his hair before returning to typing out your report. “You’re so needy.”
Ranpo only hummed. You knew he needed this, the constant contact, the small touches, an ever-present reassurance that you wouldn’t leave him, that he wasn’t alone. The first time he had explained it to you, his fear that was buried so deep under his confidence that it never came to light unless he let it, the first time he had laid his soul bare for you to see, you had cried. You hadn’t minded his affection before, and ever since then, when you spent too much time in the same room with him without him touching you in some way or form, you got anxious yourself. So, feeling his heavy head rest against your shoulder now was as reassuring to you as it was to him.
Absentmindedly, eyes still fixed on the screen as your fingers continued typed, you turned your head and pressed a lingering kiss against Ranpo’s hair, as if trying to make up for making him wait. His hair smelled of chocolate and a hint of vanilla, and the strands were soft against your skin, making your smile.
“Did you just kiss Ranpo-san’s head?!” The screech was uttered by none other than that Atsushi.
Casually you looked up from your screen, over to the white-haired boy, who had jumped up, eyes as big as saucers and jaw hanging to the floor.
Shrugging with the one shoulder Ranpo had not occupied, you asked: “Do you also need a head-kiss?”
Ranpo against you shoulder protested at your offer: “Kisses are reserved for me!” while Dazai delightedly cackled from the couch: “You’re one of the quick one’s, hm, Atsushi-kun!”
Atsushi sunk back down in his chair, muttering about how nobody told him anything here, while you went back to finishing up your report. You wanted to finish it before the break after all, so you could spend the warm autumn noon hunting down the latest crepe shop in Yokohama for lunch together with Ranpo.

Every Instance of Dazai's Ability Being Used, and the Few Times it Doesn't Work
Because I really wanted to look into the logistics of Dazai's ability, I decided that I wanted to look through every source of media (barring BEAST) I could for when his ability has been used. This includes:
Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen (Light Novel)
STORMBRINGER (Light Novel)
DEAD APPLE (Light Novel, pre-manga)
Dazai Osamu and the Dark Era (Light Novel)
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam (Light Novel)
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga

The First Time we See it Used (Chronologically) - Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen
The first instance that Dazai's ability is ever used is on Nakahara Chuuya in Phase.01, as written below.
(Dazai) placed a hand on Chuuya's neck. "Sorry, but gravity is no longer yours to control." Dazai's skill also activated when he touched his target. He had the power to halt and nullify all skills. It was the ultimate anti-skill, no exceptions.
Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen, Phase.01, Page 23
This is a classic example of Dazai's ability working traditionally, where he has direct skin-to-skin contact with Chuuya. Since Chuuya's ability is internal, as long Dazai touches him, he cannot use it.
Then, near the end of the novel, he uses his ability to nullify Arthur Rimbaud's ability against Nakahara Chuuya.
In (Dazai's) left hand was a piece of fabric: a garland he'd used as decoration for Chuuya's fake party. The long garland dragged along the ground, cleverly hidden in the shadows of floating debris. One end of the cloth was stuffed inside Chuuya's clothes. "I told Chuuya to pick up this garland when you destroyed the nearby building," Dazai said with a child-like grin. "Then I tied it to myself using my skill," Chuuya added with the scythe still piercing his arm. "I wrapped it around my entire body and made sure it was hidden underneath my clothes." "After that, I simply touched the other end." Dazai held up the cloth. "Want to guess what happened then?" "The skill affecting the cloth you touched... was nullified."
Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen, Phase.04, Page 115
For that instance, instead of physical contact with the ability user, Dazai extended his ability across an object to Chuuya. This made the object nullified against Rimbaud's ability, forming a shield of sorts to block his skill from attacking further.
The First Time it's Used On a Singularity - STORMBRINGER
NOTE: I own a copy of STORMBRINGER, but at the time of making this post, I was loaning it out to a friend. With that said, I used a translation that I have read previously. If you wish to locate it, go to bsd-bibliophile's Tumblr and search from there. I don't want to directly link it for obvious reasons.
Dazai's ability is seen twice in STORMBRINGER. The first instance is near the beginning of it, as written in the translation below.
(Dazai) casually grabbed Chuuya's arm and lifted it up. At that moment, the abnormal gravitational field that surrounded them immediately disappeared, along with the insufferable pain Chuuya had felt.
STORMBRINGER, [CODE ; 01]
Like before, we have yet another example of Dazai using direct skin-to-skin contact to nullify. However, in this instance, it is used to nullify a partial singularity, as Corruption has not been fully unleashed here. (At least, that is how I am interpreting it.)
Then, near the end of STORMBRINGER:
Chuuya limply drifted in the air for several seconds before the black wings on his back slowly lowered him. Dazai caught his body. The minute he touched his body, Dazai's ability nullification activated. The self-contradictory singularity energy that sustained him retracted in on itself as the singularity's power outlet decreased. He eventually returned to normal and his gate closed. The red marks plaguing Chuuya's body pulled away. The field of gravity disappeared and the stillness of night was restored.
STORMBRINGER, [CODE ; 04]
Yet again, nullification through direct skin contact. This instance doesn't provide an exact idea of where they touched, but it's reasonable to assume he touched Chuuya on his back or something.
This is the first time Dazai's ability has been used related to a singularity.
Singularity Time - DEAD APPLE Prologue
Dazai continues to use his ability to nullify Chuuya's singularity as seen in the prologue of DEAD APPLE. Though this is not shown in the light novel or in the movie, it can be seen in the manga, as shown here:
DEAD APPLE Manga, Volume 3, Chapter 10
Dazai touches Chuuya's face to nullify corruption.
Other Instances Before Dazai Joins the ADA - The Heartless Cur and BSD Manga Chapter 12
The Heartless Cur is a short story provided in the sixth volume of the Bungou Stray Dogs Manga, which tells of how Akutagawa and Dazai first met. Akutagawa attempts to use his ability on Dazai as written below:
Akutagawa turned his own sleeve into a wide blade, and thrust it into the boy's neck without a shred of hesitation. "Not bad," Dazai said, quietly. Akutagawa was stunned. He was sure the boy should have died. However, Akutagawa's blade had vanished like mist right where it would have touched the boy's neck.
The Heartless Cur, Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #6
Then, a flashback is shown from when Dazai was mentoring Akutagawa. During that, Akutagawa attempts to use his ability against him.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #3, Chapter 12
As seen here, Dazai directly touches Rashoumon with his hand, nullifying the ability upon contact.
Dazai Gets Tested and Tests Others - Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam
Dazai gets to use his ability a whopping four times in this Light Novel, which can also be seen in the remarkably inaccurate two-episode Azure Apostle arc in the anime.
It's used twice on Kunikida in a short period of time, as shown below:
The bullet tears through the air until it hits (Dazai) right between the eyes.
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Page 127
I take the pistol I shot earlier and toss it at Dazai. He catches it, and almost instantly, it transforms back into a piece of notebook paper in his hands.
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Page 129
Since the bullets were also created using my skill, they were nullified and vaporized by Dazai's own skill on contact.
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Page 130
Again, direct contact with Dazai's skin gets rid of the bullets, vaporizing them, while turning Kunikida's pistol back to its original state. This is interesting to me in how Dazai's ability impacts them differently. Because the bullets were created with the pistol, the bullets vanished. However, when Dazai touched the pistol, it reverted back to notebook paper with whatever Kunikida wrote on it.
This is also the second instance where Dazai touches an object and uses his ability on it.
Then, his ability is used twice on the numbers terrorist.
"Why...?! Why won't any numbers appear?! I can't accelerate, either! Why, why, why is this happening?!" "You should've done your homework. Skills don't work on me."
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Page 150
What I find interesting about this is that he isn't touching an object or the ability user here. I'm assuming that since it would require to impact Dazai's skin, that is where the nullification occurred. If the ability didn't show up on his skin, would it still have been nullified? We shall never know.
However, him nullifying the ability against himself does not nullify it against anyone else. This is further encouraged by the below:
Dazai's right fist connects with the young man's face, spinning him a full 180 degrees.
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Page 150
(Kunikida's POV) Then I look at my body to find that the numbers have vanished. Dazai must have defeated that skill user.
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Page 151
It appears that if Dazai wants to end an ability user's ability on everyone at that moment, he has to touch that ability user physically. So, to be clear, Dazai's skin can nullify the effect of an ability on himself. Dazai touching skin-to-skin with an active ability user nullifies the effect of their ability on everyone.
Examples We See in the Present - Bungou Stray Dogs Manga
Dazai uses his ability quite a few times at the beginning of the series, but it begins to be many more chapters between once we finish with the Guild Arc. It goes from less than twenty to twenty, then, fifty. The last time (as of posting this) that Dazai has used his ability was in Chapter 101. Make of that what you will.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #1, Chapter 1
Direct skin-to-skin contact. Atsushi returns to his original human form.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #1, Chapter 4
ATSUSHI - Direct skin-to-skin contact. Atsushi returns to his original human form.
AKUTAGAWA - Skin-to-ability-infused-object contact. Rashoumon vanishes.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #3, Chapter 9
Skin-to-ability-infused-object contact. Rashoumon vanishes after cutting through Dazai's bandages to his neck.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #7, Chapter 25
Skin-to-ability-infused-object contact. Q's doll disintegrates, and the ability deactivates against Atsushi.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #7, Chapter 29
Skin-to-ability-infused-object contact. Q's doll disintegrates, and everyone affected by the ability is released from it.
Note: Touching those affected by the ability would not nullify its impact on them. He would actively have to touch the catalyst of the ability (the doll) or Q themself.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #8, Chapter 30
Skin-to-skin contact. Because Steinbeck's vines are in the middle of being created and used by him, Dazai touching him on the neck nullifies them and causes them to disintegrate.
I explain this because there is an instance in the future where Dazai touches Steinbeck's vines and they don't disintegrate, which I will attempt to explain.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #8, Chapter 31
Skin-to-skin contact. Dazai nullifies Chuuya's Corruption.
We Will Now Take a Break From Our Scheduled Programming - DEAD APPLE
Dazai uses his ability three times during DEAD APPLE.
The moment his fingers touched the crystals, their hard gem-like surfaces cracked, and they melted away. Drip. Trails of light suddenly transformed into a liquid-like blood, swirling around and mixing together in the air. The two lights melted into one and spun until they formed a single sphere.
DEAD APPLE, Interlude-3, Page 126
In this, he is touching Shibusawa's ability-infused objects. At least, that is how I'm interpreting it. It doesn't change the fact that the users behind them are dead, but it means they are no longer being contained.
Then, in a classic instance that I'm sure everyone will recognize:
The viscous liquid slid down Dazai's throat until eventually, long, slender fingers touched Chuuya's ghastly, corrupted face. When they made contact, it instantly nullified his skill.
DEAD APPLE, 5-4, Page 154
Skin-to-skin.
The next instance, however, is considerably interesting to me.
"Get off me," he demanded, but Dazai kept him still. "Don't move." "The hell?" Chuuya grimaced as Dazai held his head down. While glancing around, Dazai admitted, "Looks like the fog hasn't completely cleared yet, and I'd rather not have to protect you from your skill right now."
DEAD APPLE, 5-4, Page 155
By maintaining skin-to-skin contact with Chuuya, Dazai prevents Shibusawa's ability (the fog) from affecting Chuuya. Since Chuuya's ability is nullified, there is none to steal in that moment.
And Back to the Manga! - Bungou Stray Dogs Manga
This instance is not a very explicit one, but it is heavily implied that he is using his ability in this moment.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #12, Chapter 51
As per usual, skin-to-skin with Atsushi, and skin-to-ability-infused-object with Akutagawa (well, potential, as it's not active at that moment).
The next instance is in Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #22, Chapter 101. There's no specific panel or image of how exactly it works, because it's not tangible.
To be clear, Dazai nullifies the cat burglar's time control ability's effect on him. The reason for this is assuming that if it affects a certain amount of space (as stated, a few kilometers within her radius), it is technically tangible, and therefore can be viewed as touching everyone within that space. If it touches Dazai's skin, it won't impact him.
I had to think about this a lot more than I thought I would. Initially, I thought, 'it has no corporeal form or anything, it's not as if he's touching her... there's no rational explanation for why he can nullify it.' This thought was further encouraged by the fact that Fukuchi turned back time repeatedly, and Dazai couldn't have been not impacted by that.
Then, I realized that Asagiri specifically stated that there is a limited space in which her ability can take effect. By giving it a spatial limit, it is implied that it has to make some sort of barely visible contact to freeze everyone in time, as it doesn't do that for everyone else.
Asagiri, you clever son of a bitch. For fuck's sake.
These are all the instances where Dazai's ability has been successfully used. However, there are times where it fails to work. I want to explore those moments and explain why. Some are more self-explanatory than others.
He's Only Human - Dazai's Entrance Exam, BSD Manga, and 55 Minutes
There are six different points where Dazai's ability doesn't activate. I think it's important to look at them, because it shows exceptions to his ability.
The first instance is in Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam. You're going to laugh at me for putting this example in, but I feel it is necessary.
"Heh-heh. What surprised me the most was the fact that Ranpo's 'skill' isn't actually a skill at all." ...Huh? "Don't be ridiculous. As if someone without a skill could really do something like that." "That's what makes it so amazing! Listen to this. When Ranpo was thinking, I sneaked up behind him and pinched some of his hair."
Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Pages 110-111
It goes without saying, but Dazai's ability can't impact an ability that doesn't exist. Ranpo's Super Deduction is imaginary, and thus, Dazai can't nullify it.
Next is a few instances in the manga.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #2, Chapter 7
Because Kyouka purposefully does not touch Dazai's skin, she could activate her ability, Demon Snow. Now, could it be said that theoretically, Dazai could've blocked this by extending his ability to his coat? Maybe. Considering previous examples, it's fair to say that if Dazai didn't want to get abducted here? He probably could've avoided it easily. Just some food for thought.
There's no visual of it in the manga, but I brought this up earlier. In Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #8, Chapter 31, Dazai and Chuuya go to rescue Q. They are entrapped by Steinbeck's roots, and Dazai has to cut them out of it. Please keep in mind that when I say this, this is based off theory alone and no direct proof, panel, animation-wise or otherwise. I believe that when Dazai is cutting Q out of the roots, odds are, he probably brushes against them with his knife-holding hand a little. Since these roots were all created together, wouldn't it be reasonable to think that they would disintegrate under Dazai's touch? Which brings up another point: why wouldn't Dazai just touch the roots if that was the case? That would be far easier than cutting them all away, unless he's intentionally trying to annoy Chuuya (which is incredibly possible but time-consuming). This makes me think that Dazai's ability can stop ability-created objects if they are still actively being made or used by the ability user, but if they are no longer attached to the user (activity-wise) and were not created from an object (like Doppo Poet or Dogra Magra for example), they remain existing.
Anyways. Sorry about the rant. Back to actual examples.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #8, Chapter 31
As Dazai will clearly state himself after recovering from this, Lovecraft's tentacles are not an ability. If it's not related to an ability, he can do nothing against it.
Then, we have 55 Minutes, which introduces this fascinating tidbit:
(Wells) "Skills that nullify other skills will not activate if the user is dead. In other words, Dazai--or rather, his body--won't be nullifying any skills since his heart has stopped."
55 Minutes, Page 186
First, when Dazai's heart came to a stop, the blood supply to the brain would cease, and Dazai would die. When this happened, his skill would cease to exist, and other skills would start working on him again. Therefore, his wounds needed to be swiftly treated, and he'd need immediate resuscitation afterward--even the kind of resuscitation they perform at any ordinary hospital through electric stimulation. And if that worked, Dazai would going from being "dead" to being "on the brink of death." After that, Yosano could use her skill to completely heal his wounds. In other words, it should be possible to heal Dazai as long as he was on the brink of death.
55 Minutes, Page 186-187
Yeah, so if he's dead-ish? Abilities will work on him. Albeit, it's a very, very short time-frame, but it does in fact exist.
Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #21, Chapter 95
In this panel, Nikolai uses his ability, The Overcoat, on Dazai. This shows that yet again, as long as the ability does not touch him directly skin-to-skin, it will work as intended.
SUMMARY
Dazai's ability can be used against anyone or anything that he can touch. Examples being:
Ability users he is touching skin-to-skin with
Objects he is actively touching and willing his ability into
Abilities that are infused into external objects (ex: Rashoumon in Akutagawa's jacket, a gun created from a sheet of paper in Kunikida's notebook)
Abilities that would have direct contact with his skin (ex: the numbers skill from Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam)
Dazai's ability cannot affect:
Skill users he is not touching skin-to-skin (ex: Kyouka grabbing his jacket when abducting him so she can continue using Demon Snow)
Objects that are no longer actively a part of an ability (ex: Steinbeck's vines on Q) [ASSUMPTION]
Not abilities (Ranpo, Lovecraft)
Abilities he is not touching with his skin (ex: Nikolai's ability)
Abilities when his heart isn't beating/he's dead
So. Do with this information what you will.
Also, for shits and giggles, here's a running tally of how many times his ability has been used on an individual, and who it has failed to impact.
SUCCESSFUL NULLIFICATION
Nakahara Chuuya: six
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke: five (one time implied)
Nakajima Atsushi: three (one time implied)
Kunikida Doppo: two
Numbers Guy from DOEE: two
Q: two
Shibusawa Tatsuhiko: two
John Steinbeck: one
Arthur Rimbaud: one
Cat Burglar: at least once
FAILED NULLIFICATION
Edogawa Ranpo
Izumi Kyouka
John Steinbeck [ASSUMPTION]

Blood And Shadows. Alcina x Femreader (Occult Noir/Detective Fanfic)
Chapter 1: The Lady In The Shadows
(notes: the reader is refered to as "agent winters" winters being your last name not your actual name, that can be y/n)
The rain pounded relentlessly on the slick streets, each droplet ricocheting off the pavement like a reminder of the night's weight. The city was shrouded in darkness, save for the occasional flicker of a neon sign or the dim glow of a streetlight struggling against the downpour. You pulled your coat tighter around your frame, the cold seeping through your skin as your eyes traced the lines of the alleyways, searching for the café. It was one of those nights where everything felt heavy—thick with secrets, drenched in tension.
You glanced through the cracked window, and there she was—impossible to miss, even in the gloom. Alcina Dimitrescu. The name alone stirred rumors and half-forgotten whispers in every dark corner of the city. She belonged to the occult agency, which made her an anomaly among people like you. The FBI dealt in facts, in blood and fingerprints, in the cold steel of handcuffs. Dimitrescu? She dealt in something darker, something that swam beneath the surface of reason. And now, she was your partner, whether you liked it or not.
The bell above the door gave a tired ring as you entered, the warmth of the café doing nothing to shake the cold from your bones. The place was a dive—greasy tables, flickering lights, and a handful of patrons who looked like they’d given up on life long before they’d ever set foot inside. But in the corner, Alcina sat, commanding the shadows like they were drawn to her, a queen in exile.
She was tall—no, towering. Her trench coat was black, tailored perfectly to her long frame, cinched at the waist with a belt that accentuated her already impossibly sharp silhouette. The collar was turned up, and nestled against her chest, you could see a single black rose, tucked just beneath the lapel. Her skin was pale, unnaturally so, made all the more striking by the crimson lipstick that curled around her smirk. Her eyes glinted in the low light, predatory and knowing, as though she could see everything about you—the secrets you carried, the ones you wished you could forget.
As you approached, you noticed something else—a necklace around her neck, the chain delicate but sturdy, holding a pendant with a strange, arcane emblem. It shimmered faintly in the dim light, its symbols indecipherable, but there was something about it that felt wrong. Ancient. Dangerous.
“Agent Winters,” she purred, her voice sliding over you like velvet. Her lips curved into a smile, the kind that made you feel like you were already caught in her web. “I was starting to think you’d gotten lost in this dreadful weather.”
You slid into the booth across from her, trying not to make it obvious that your hands were still trembling from the cold—or maybe something else. You fumbled for a cigarette, striking a match, only for it to flicker out before you could bring it to your lips. Dammit.
Before you could try again, Alcina reached across the table, her long fingers brushing against your hand, plucking the cigarette from your grip with casual grace. Her lighter clicked open—a sleek, silver relic—and the flame danced between you, casting brief shadows over her face. As she leaned forward to light it, her smile widened, and you caught the faintest glimpse of what could have been fangs.
“There,” she said, the flame snuffing out with a sharp click. “No need to struggle.”
You took a drag, letting the smoke fill your lungs, grounding you in the moment. Her presence was unnerving, to say the least, but there was something magnetic about her, something that made it impossible to look away. You knew who she was—what she was, some said—but there was no denying the power she exuded. It hung in the air between you, thick and tangible.
“We’ve got a very gruesome case on our hands, Agent Winters,” Alcina said, leaning back into the shadows, her eyes still fixed on you. “Even by this city’s standards.”
You exhaled, watching the smoke curl toward the ceiling. “Gruesome’s a given in this town,” you replied, the weariness seeping into your voice. “You wouldn’t be here otherwise, right?”
Her laugh was low, dark, and it sent a shiver down your spine. “Quite right,” she said. “Though I must admit, I’m curious how someone like you ended up assigned to someone like me.” Her eyes gleamed, playful yet dangerous. “You must’ve made someone very unhappy.” “or maybe, it was destiny”
You didn’t answer right away. Instead, you took another drag, thinking about how this city seemed to have it out for you from the moment you set foot in it. The cases were always bloody, always brutal, but this… teaming up with an agent from the occult? That was a new low, even for the Bureau.
“Yeah, well,” you muttered, flicking the ash into the tray between you, “this city isn’t exactly known for its kindness.”
Alcina’s smirk deepened, her red lips a slash of color against her pale skin. “No, it isn’t. And neither am I.”
Her words hung in the air like a threat, but there was something else beneath them, something… inviting. You’d heard the stories—everyone had. Alcina Dimitrescu wasn’t just dangerous because of the cases she handled. She had a reputation for being more than human, for being something ancient, something that thrived on the darkness that seeped into every crack of this godforsaken place.
But right now, sitting across from her, watching the way the dim light caught the edges of her features—the sharp angles of her cheekbones, the faint glint of her necklace—you didn’t care. You didn’t care what she was or what she could do. All that mattered was getting through this case.
“We need to get to work, Agent” she said, her voice soft but commanding, as though there was no room for argument.
You nodded, taking one last drag before stubbing out the cigarette. “Lead the way,” you said, trying to ignore the tightening knot in your stomach.
As you stood, she rose with you, impossibly tall, her presence looming over you like the shadows that followed her. She gave you one last look, a smile that was equal parts alluring and dangerous, before heading for the door. You watched her go, wondering just how deep into the darkness you were about to wade.
The rain greeted you as you stepped outside, colder than before, as if the city itself knew what you were about to uncover.
And in the back of your mind, one question gnawed at you: Were the monsters you were hunting out there in the streets, or was the real one walking beside you, smiling like she knew a secret you could never hope to understand?
-any feedback is welcome-

I found this tiktok a while back that I absolutely love:
And an idea just came to mind.
If Dazai "died" (either he does actually die or he fakes his death like he did when fighting Fyodor), Akutagawa would get the mafia to go after the detective agency because "You let him die! How dare you!" He'd recruit anyone he could. Even the black lizard.
But Chuuya... he would be in the shadows, hunting down who truly killed him because he knows it's not the detective agency's fault, not really. He'd bring down whoever really caused Dazai harm.
Just a random thought. Take it as you will.

Could you do Cat King x gn reader, they are a mage that came to port Townsend and tried to warn Edwin about using magic on cats. As they escort the dead boy detectives to the King they try to have Thomas go easy on Edwin. Cat King gets a little jealous as to why his partner wants to let Edwin off easy. (Edwin reminds the reader of their younger sibling they haven’t seen in while)
I love, love, LOVE this request SO MUCH! Thank you for giving me the honour of writing it! I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
For me? For you.
The Cat King x GN Reader
Word count: 3,041
Warnings: A dead body appearing, but only for a second and without gruesome description, some jealousy coming from the Cat King and a mention of having a dead younger sibling
Y/N had known about the Dead Boy Detectives Agency for quite some time now. They had been watching the two boys' adventures the moment they heard about them, taking care of bigger problems when they encounter them from the shadows, taking on a role of a guardian angel. Well, guardian mage, but the point stands. The reason why they took such interest in those boys was because one of them, Edwin Payne, reminded them of their little brother who died quite a long time ago due to an illness that even magic couldn't cure. They stayed with their brother until Death showed up to collect them.
So the moment they felt their presence in Port Townsend alognside a very skilled medium, they had to finally show themself to the trio. A small lesson in dos and don'ts when it came to this town, something that would not only keep them safe, but also inform them about what could be hiding in it.
Y/N teleported themself into the little apartment that Crystal was renting, scaring the three people inside it to death. Well, at least one of them since the other two were already dead. Immediately Charles got into an offensive stance, ready to fight if needed while Edwin remained cautious and Crystal stood behind both of them, still a bit in shock, a fight or flight mode ready to go in a case of an emergency.
-Who the hell are you and what are you doing here?! - Charles asked, hand at the ready to reach for his cricket bat. At the same time Edwin was thinking of different exits out of the possible danger.
-Calm down, calm down. I come here as a messenger - Y/N said, raising their hands up in defense before crossing them over their chest and looking the trio over. - You could say I've been observing from the shadows what you've been doing for quite some time now. The difference now is that you're in a new place you have no knowledge of. There are dangers here. Rules even. If you like your peace, keep to them. Most important would be to stay away from the cats. Don't even think about using magic on them, you don't want to find out what will happen if you do - they stated, uncurling their index finger as they started talking about the first rule. Then the second one when they mentioned watching out for a witch that lived in Port Townsend, a menace to deal with. Then another one and another one until they were out of fingers to show and rules to tell.
-Why the hell would we believe anything you just said? - Charles asked, suspicious look on his face as he carefully observed Y/N, not even for a second dropping his guard.
-Because I saved your ass so many times you could at least try to trust me. Remember that nasty poltergeist in 30 East Drive, Pontefract? How you got cornered because he smashed all the mirrors and quite literally trapped you inside that house? Yeah, that was me. So have some faith kids. Alright, that should be it. Remember what I said and don't get into any trouble. If you dive, head first, into deep shit, then I don't know how well my influence in town could help to save you. Again - they said before doing a little wave with their fingers and dissappearing in a swirl of black fog.
You'd think that after such a warning, people would listen. Yeah, not Edwin. As much as Charles is stubborn, he's somewhat not dumb enough to not listen to someone who clearly wants to help them, albeit reluctant. Crystal doesn't even know much what to do, so she wouldn't try anything either way, but Edwin... Oh Edwin. Mr. Edwin, Know-It-All, I-Know-Better-Than-You, Why-Should-I-Listen-To-You?, Payne. Of course he would be the one so intelligent, yet so stupidly stubborn, to pull shit like that.
Obviously he just HAD to cast a magic spell on a cat. Now not only does Y/N have to save his ass from a harsh punishment, they also have to deal with a certain moody Cat King that was currently throwing a hissy fit, pacing around and cursing out everything in bloody existence. Y/N rubbed their temples as they listened to their partner rant continously.
-The nerve! Magic! On my cats! They'll be lucky if they walk out of here alive! - Thomas said angrily, running a hand through his hair as he did another circle in front of his throne.
-My love, will you take a deep breath with me, please? I'm sure there's a logical explanation to this. I know you're mad, I understand where that's coming from, I really do, but let's not make rushed decisions okay? - Y/N proposed, walking over to Thomas and stopping him gently by placing their hands on top of his shoulders, before sliding them down his arms to his hands, catching them in theirs and holding tightly.
-Sugar, I don't think there's a logical enough explanation to using magic on my fucking cats - the Cat King hissed out, before finally closing his eyes for a second and taking a deep breath to slightly calm down, not wanting to lash out on his partner.
-I'm sure there is. Will you hear him out at least? - Y/N asked, rubbing soothing circles with their thumbs into the backs of Thomas' hands, wanting to calm him down a bit more.
-Him? Kitty cat, it sounds to me like you know who it was - Thomas said, slight accusation in his voice as he looked at Y/N with his head slightly shifted to the side, eyebrows furred as a scowl started appearing on his face making Y/N cup his cheeks in their hands.
-I think I know who it is for almost a hundred percent, but I've warned them that they would be wise to stay away from your cats - they said, pressing their forehead against Thomas', hoping that they convinced him at least just a bit to go easy on Edwin without particularly saying anything.
-Yet they didn't listen now did they? - The man asked, huffing out some air before wrapping his arms around their waist. - I'll think about being less harsh, but there still must be a punishment. No one gets away with hurting or damaging what belongs to me - he added before planting a kiss on Y/N's lips.
It was finally time for the trio to have a little talk with the Cat King. He had already sent the cat Edwin used the magic on to go and fetch them, but Y/N wanted to be there too before they actually get there to give them another small advice. They promised Thomas that they'll be back soon before they departed in a swirl of black fog like the one before.
-You've done fucked up. What did I tell you, huh? Stay away from the cat and what did you do? You went and used MAGIC on one. Are you out of your mind, Edwin Payne? - Y/N asked with a certain edge to their voice, clearly very annoyed with, mostly Edwin, the group, because there was no guarantee that Thomas would actually go easy on all of them. Especially with all of their smart mouths that only get them into even more trouble.
-I don't see what's all the fuss about. It's just a bit of magic - the ghost teenager said, rolling his eyes sassily before placing his hands on his hips to add even more sass to his statement.
-Don't give me that attitude, young man, you have no idea in what deep shit you are and I specifically told you not to dive head first into any shit. It already took me some time to try and get him to calm down and not send out a swarm of cats to rip you to shreds. Talk any more shit and I won't be able to get your ass out of this one - Y/N said, crossing their arms over their chest as they stared Edwin down before Charles chimed in.
-Him? Who's him? And why is he so important that you speak of him as if he was about to send Edwin back to the pits of Hell? - he asked with a look of confusion on his face as he looked simultaneously at Y/N and the cat that was now sitting a few feet behind them, patiently waiting to continue navigating the group to the warehouse.
-You'll see soon enough. Now come on. There's no time to waste - they said before finally turning sideways and gesturing to their right as an indicator for the teenagers to finally move.
When they got inside the warehouse, Y/N couldn't help, but smile softly and shake their head at their boyfriend's antics. Of course he would put on a show. He wouldn't be the diva cat that he was if he didn't. As they approached the throne and the cats dispersed from before it, leaving only a very massacred body behind alongside three disturbed teenagers with an unfazed mage in front of them, the said teenagers behind Y/N observed the orange cat with confusion and caution written on their faces.
-We were invited to see the Cat King - Edwin said, trying not to let the shakiness in his voice after seeing the dead guy before the be heard.
The trio flinched when the cat disappeared in purple fire, making space for the gorgeous man that is Y/N's boyfriend to appear. They smiled brightly at him and bowed down jokingly, making the Cat King chuckle with endearment, just to get that fire back into his eyes that spoke of danger and anger at not only the disrespect of his rules, but also endangerment of one of his subjects after he saw the group behind his partner.
-Hi - he said as he observed the trio, a faux friendly smile on his face.
-Can all cats do that? - Crystal asked the boys quietly, yet not quiet enough that the Cat King didn't hear which only made him chuckle in amusement.
-"Can all cats do that?" Of course not, I'm a Cat KING - He answered, putting an emphasis on the 'king' part, going full on sass as he usually did. - I can tell you're not the brains of the operation. Sorry, I'm already bored - Thomas added, making a rather mean comment, which he didn't really seem to care about, wanting to get to the center of the problem quickly.
-No need to be rude, darling - Y/N said with a gentle pout to their face before they walked over to where Thomas was sitting and stood right next to the throne, putting their hand on the man's shoulder, a little sign that he could tone it down a bit.
-Hmm - The Cat King only mused before letting out a soft sigh and turning his head towards the cats gathered in the back. - Which one of them used the magic on you? - he asked the cat that fell victim of Edwin's antics.
-The scrawny one that just had the nerve to talk to you - the cat answered, clearly showcasing where the it's personality came from.
That brought out a little 'oh' out of Thomas, before Edwin spoke up again, trying to explain what they were doing and who they were until the Cat King interrupted him.
-Oh I don't care. Using magic on my cats is a total car crash on your part - He said with a cynical smile before lazily pointing with his index towards Edwin. - We... Should discuss your offense. Privately- the man added while standing up from the throne.
Of course Charles didn't like that and tried to stop anything from happening, but Y/N shook their head as a signal not to do it. It would only make the matter worse and they already had a plan of action, so he could screw it up with his little outburst. Edwin talked it out with the other two while Y/N walked over to Thomas and slightly fixed his messy hair, sighing softly as they thought over what to do when they actually go and sort this out.
When the trio came back, Thomas departed himself, Y/N and Edwin to the bedroom they both shared. Weird choice of a place to sort this situation out, but Y/N didn't really question it. Out loud at least.
-So... What should your punishment be? - Thomas said with a large amused grin as he stepped closer towards Edwin.
-How about something that wouldn't involve dangerous things that would result in Edwin going to the afterlife? - Y/N proposed an idea with arms crossed over their chest and eyebrows slightly raised as they looked at their lover with a, just a smidge, pleading look.
-Why not? I don't think that would really be over the top. Seems quite fitting in my opinion - the Cat King said shrugging his shoulders with a smirk as he looked back towards Y/N.
-Please? He just made a mistake. A dumb one, I admit, but it was a mistake. He shouldn't have to lose his ghost life for that - they said, straightening their pose before slightly tilting their head to the side as they kept their gaze only on Thomas.
Clearly he didn't like that constant defending of the boy coming from his partner, so he decided to have a small talk with them off to the side, excusing them both for a moment before guiding Y/N to the one spot he knew Edwin wouldn't see or hear much.
-Why do you care about this ghostly twink so much? What, do you find him cute, is that what it is? I've got to admit, he's quite cute, but I'm literally right here, hello? - Thomas began asking a series of questions, an aura of jealousy surrounding him as he loosely caged Y/N against the wall, his cat personality clearly kicking in as the respect for personal space completely flew out of the window in a matter of seconds when he leaned in so their faces were centimeters away.
-What? No! Kitty cat, he just... He reminds me of Alexander... They both didn't get to grow up and they are similar so much personality wise... I can't help but see Alexander in him, even though I know that he had moved on to the afterlife. Somewhere where I can't follow. Not yet - Y/N explained, letting out a sigh before turning their head and looking off to the side at the clear as day memory of their younger brother filled their mind.
-Shit... I'm sorry, sweetheart. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions... - He said with a look filled with guilt before he rested his head against their shoulder, wrapped his arms around their waist and closed his eyes. - I'll go easy on him for you. Give him something not too hard to do, looking at the fact that he seems like a clever fella. He will have to stay here for quite some time to do that though - Thomas added after pressing apologetic, small kiss against the skin of their neck and then pulling away a bit to look into their eyes.
-Really? You'll do that for me? - they asked quietly, looking back at Thomas with a soft smile.
-For you. Always for you - he said and leaned it to capture their lips with his own in a sweet, short kiss.
After that they went back to Edwin who was looking around, more than likely looking for a way out, but even if he wanted to run, he would get lost, so that would be unsuccessful.
-Alright. I've got just the right punishment for you - Thomas said, stretching out his arms to the sides slightly with a large grin on his face. - Show me your arm. Come on, I don't have the whole night - he told Edwin, doing a little 'Come on' motion with his hand at the same time he said it out loud.
-For what? - Edwin asked cautiously, clearly not trusting the Cat King. Obviously so. After all he was about to receive a punishment that he had no idea what it was.
-Edwin, just do it - Y/N said, encouraging the teenager with a small smile and a nod of their head.
Finally, the boy agreed, although reluctantly, and stretched out his arm towards the Cat King before pulling it quickly back when a gold bracelet showed up around it.
-What is this? - Edwin asked with suspicion, immediately trying to take it off yet finding himself unable to do so.
-A little piece of jewellery that will keep reminding you of your punishment. All you have to do is count all the cats that reside in Port Townsend. It will also keep you in the town for that time. Until you finish counting of course. Also only the one who put it on can take it off, so I'd recommend hurrying if you want to go back to wherever you came from - the Cat King said, a cheeky smirk on his face as he observed the boy's flabbergasted expression with amusement.
When Edwin started lamenting and protesting that the task was unfair and impossible to do, Thomas explained why he received such a punishment before sending him back to the other two teenagers while Y/N and him stayed back in the bedroom.
Y/N walked over to the Cat King, wrapping their arms around the man's neck and leaning in to press a sweet kiss, thanking him without words while he wrapped his arms around their middle and pulled them close.
-That went well. Next time he pulls something stupid, then you won't be able to save his ass from the harsher punishment though - he said before burying his face in their neck and simply resting there.
-Yeah, yeah, we'll see about that - they said, both of them knowing how different the reality will be if such a thing actually happens. Y/N having so much control over Thomad without trying too much. After all, the Cat King was such a romantic and he hated it.

Hiii! Can I ask about Search Agency? Thanks 💕
@embroiderling
Of course you can! This one is brand new and hopefully something I can buckle down and knock out in short order. Hob is something like a private detective who hires his services to help people find things, whether missing people or lost heirlooms or stolen property, etc. He works for both the mundane world and the supernatural, and Dream comes to him for help tracking down items originally stolen by Burgess and stolen again by Ethel Cripps. Here is the start of it:
"Are you Robert Gadling?" Hob does not bother unpropping his feet from the edge of his desk nor sitting upright to greet this stranger. It's literally ten minutes before he locks up and his mind's already gone on ahead home, with maybe a quick stop at Jim's on the way for dinner. Professional appearance is not quite front and center. "Suppose that depends who's asking," he drawls, glancing over to the doorway. And immediately, he's paying more attention. The stranger on his threshold is gorgeous. Tall, pale, rail-thin, thick black hair tousled every which-way and eyes that are a luminous blue, shining as he crosses into Hob's office. And his voice— "Are you a friend to the shadows, and to the lights that dwell beneath?" Oh. Oh fuck, okay. He's that kind of client. Hob puts his feet down, spins the chair around the way it's meant to face, meets this stranger's eyes seriously. "I am friend to the lights, to the shadows, pledged to help before harm and to foster coexistence," he intones, with the solemnity due the code, and offers his hand. "Robert Gadling, at your service. Hob, unless we're being terribly formal." He winks, all charm and ease. "Hob, then," the stranger says, in that velvet-dark voice, giving his hand a firm clasp and dropping it just as quickly. "I am told you might be able to. Help me."

KJ Charles has breathtaking range. And it's all so organically diverse and vivid and excellently paced and clever.
Doomsday books -- Smugglers of Romney Marsh in 1810–20s in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars.
Society of Gentlemen -- Clash between the royalist establishment and radical republicans in the last years of Regency.
Sins of the Cities -- Small businesses and trade of the Industrial Revolution in London's immigrant quarter (taxidermy of all things!), Victorian spiritualists and musical hall artists in the 1870s.
Lillywhite Boys -- London criminal underworld, bluestocking feminists, private detectives, colonial gem trade, the rise of industrialists in the 1890s, and pre-Victorian folk Christmas traditions.
Charm of Magpies -- Shanghai traders and Chinese immigrant communities of London in the late 1800s.
England World -- Nascent British intelligence agencies and new technology in the shadow of the Boer War in the 1890s + integration of Indian nobles from its last kingdoms with elite British society + classism and xenophobia in British antisemitism
Will Darling Adventures -- The reverberating social, political and economic changes from the aftermath of WWI and further development of intelligence organisations during the 1920s.
Just finished Band Sinister, which touched on Hellfire Clubs, the emergence of new medicine, atheism, and challenge Creationism from the fields of natural science, and Black British life before abolition. Currently reading Unfit to Print, which seems to be about London's underground pornography trade with character focus on the shared plight of Black and Indian immigrants from the colonies and their mixed race offspring. Charles's body of work really brings home that the 19th century was a full hundred years long and the distinct character of every decade. And that the real and authentic history of Britain had people of every race, religion, colour, disability, neurodiversity, gender and sexuality who have been deliberately erased by the same power structures that kept them disenfranchised and ghettoed back then.

Beast!BSD but what if Kyouka went through with her fleeing from mafia?
Some background first (and purely speculation and mainly headcanon): Kyouka lost her parents when she was 8 and she was found by the mafia a few days after that fated night. Kouyou grew attached to her as she usually does and takes her under her wing, raising her as if she was her own.
A year later, Kyouka meets "The White Reaper" by chance, whom she thought to be an cold-blooded individual only to find out to be a 14 year old teenager, slowly growing into the black coat with white striped fur. And even though he seemed as such at first glance, Kyouka realizes that he was just as kindhearted as to his loyalty to the mafia and especially their boss.
Since then, she and him got to know each other until they became practically inseparable. Kouyou, although wistful in wanting to train the girl, accepted her decision in wanting to be there for Atsushi through hell and back.
Now, at 10 years old, Kyouka flees from the mafia. She didn't want to go back, and she couldn't face Atsushi who she heard was tasked in hunting her down. She couldn't face him, she can't bring herself to.
She finds herself at the edge of the city, so close to freedom. But she doesn't take the other step. Instead, she turns around to the shadows of the city and asks out of the blue.
"Why?"
Seconds turns into a minute, and soon someone emerges from the shadows. It was Atsushi. Kyouka doesn't at which point when she sensed Atsushi following her but what confused her the most was that he had every opportunity to attack her. But instead he wordlessly followed her all the way until she made it to the edge.
Freedom was one of the few subjects Atsushi knows least, if not this being the very last of that list. The mafia has always been his home, all he ever known since his time in the orphanage. They helped him, so he's repaying that everlasting debt. He doesn't understand why Kyouka wants to leave. But one thing's for certain: he'd rather be consumed by the beast than lay a single claw on his sister, ordered to or not.
Kyouka, albeit confused, follows Atsushi as he takes her to someplace that could hopefully take care of her; a curry place. (At first, Kyouka was mighty confused, especially at the sound of some kids being rambunctious above). There, as they wait over some curry, Oda comes in and was equally shocked but apprehensive at the sight of two mafioso, no less the White Reaper. But given that neither have done anything but grab a meal to eat, he decides to hear them out.
There, the detective learns that Kyouka is also a mafioso, but even though she was under teachings of Kouyou and, coincidentally, by Atsushi's side, has never killed a person. Actually, the day she fled was the day she was supposedly dispatched on her first mission by the mafia. her record is clean.
"But you realize, Reaper, we cannot do the same to you." "I am aware of that. That's why I'm only asking for Kyouka."
After some thought, Oda agrees to take Kyouka in and bring her to the agency in hopes of helping her. And Kyouka... is confused. Why? Why is he helping her leave? Why go to such lengths knowing full well the punishments hanging over his head if he fails? This mission was handed to the boss himself. All so she can be free?
For a second, she wanted to backtrack on her plan, she couldn't comprehend why someone like Atsushi was there, regardless as his reputation as the White Reaper. He was kind, the genuine type. But Atsushi stops her before she could leave with him that night.
"I may not understand why you would want to leave after all the mafia has done for you. But I can see that you... you weren't meant to be in its shadows. As Kouyou sometimes says, you are a flower, and it is possible for flowers to bloom in shadows. But in your case, your flower needs light to bloom."
"But... what about you?" "I've been drowning in the dark for as long as I remember, I'm unable to discern what's light anymore. But that's okay; as long as you can feel what the light is." "...For the both of us."
It's been two years since then, since she last saw Atsushi, since she last stepped foot in Mafia territory and its headquarters. She's 12 years old now, enjoying Yosano and Ranpo's company, listening to Kenji's stories about his farm and animals, learning much from Oda and Kunikida, and when she was introduced to Ryuunosuke she understands his pain, although unsaid. She's enjoying life in the light.
When problems suddenly begin to rise regarding the Port Mafia, she volunteers to talk to them. That leads to a huge debate, one that she manages to win in the end:
"But why?! You're going to talk to the White Reaper, he could hurt you!" "He won't." "What makes you think so in the first place?" "Because I doubt he'll lay a single claw on me. I'm his sister after all." "Huh?!" "Wait you didn't realize I used to be in the Port Mafia?" "HUH?!"
(A/N: Basically the bit at the end is Beast!version of Kunikida realizing Dazai was in the PM. But since Dazai isn't in the PM and Kyouka is instead, it's the whole shenanigans all over again XDD)
