I had an idea for a future “Horse Life” update.
Currently, the game has three available species that aren’t, strictly speaking, horses: the Bisorses (cattle), the Caprines (goats), and the Perytons (deer).
So I was thinking: what if a future update introduces gryphons?
Gryphons would have appearances based on different species of bird and cat (for example: three possible gryphon patterns would be tiger stripes, leopard spots, and jaguar spots).
Like perytons, gryphons would be more likely to spawn with wings than without. Unlike perytons, wild gryphons would be found resting (roosting?) on the floating islands; as well as on clifftops, tall ruins, and other places only accessible with wings.
While gryphons could be tamed via feeding; they’d be carnivorous, and would reject the food other steeds in the game eat. “Horse Life” already has a fishing mechanic, in the form of the “Carrot on a Stick” used to catch kelpie foals. This mechanic could be expanded, with different types of rods and nets used to catch actual fish. More expensive fishing gear could catch more fish at a time and/or have a higher likelihood of catching better-quality fish. These fish could then be fed to gryphons to tame them, or hasten their breeding cooldowns. Players who don’t feel like fishing could catch gryphons with lassos (cat toys?), or buy canned fish from the store.
Gryphons would have a unique breeding mechanic: where a gryphon crossed with a non-gryphon would always produce a Hippogryph. The only way to breed more gryphons would be to cross a male gryphon with a female gryphon. (Hippogryphs, however; would work on the same either/or breeding rules, and eat the same food, as other horse species.) Additionally: hippogryphs would never be found in the wild, the only way to obtain them would be via breeding.
