Daisy— what is your idea of the perfect date?

I want to say something fancy, because I do have Dream Date Ideas that are v fancy (a night to the theatre, or going on a slightly longer drive to visit something interesting, a nice dinner somewhere normally neither person could afford but you can if you split the bill, etc) but all of those rely on me being in the right frame of mind and prepared to deal with any new or weird sensory stuff. And unfortunately, my brain isn't doing so hot in regulating that at the current time.

So for now, I would definitely lean towards something like a regular movie date, or even better for me personally:

Rent a hotel room, split the cost (so neither of you have to know where the other person lives if you aren't at a stage to be trusting them with that info yet), and have a movie night and/or gaming night there. You can order room service, be comfortable and assured that if the person winds up being an ass, you can call downstairs and get the fuck out of there. Plus, if it gets to the point of fucking, you're already on the bed and can multitask with whatever you're watching.

It's admittedly a weirdly lazy one (or so I've been told lmao), but I don't like the idea of putting high expectations on this stuff if you don't have/want to. It should be enough to want to hang out together at all, see how you feel abt each other, and go from there to different/fancier/etc date stuff.

I need to remember how to be vulnerable and a little more stupid and vapid so I can get out of my own head and be brave enough to post more writing, original and fic. I need another tattoo. I need to ace my job interview tomorrow so I can make more money faster and be able to afford said tattoo. I need my grandfather to be okay after his knee replacement sx this fall (he probably will be but he's got high blood pressure and our family has an unfortunate pattern of dying during routine medical procedures, and he already nearly did that once with his appendix while he was in the Air Force, but who's to say that doesn't mean this time it would be The Time?) I should be better. I want to learn to be okay with being worse.

Sometimes I’m getting fitter. To help me in this ongoing endeavour I have a hugely supportive personal trainer who I usually see about once a week, and who very patiently guides me through various fumbling attempts to pick up progressively heavier objects while I wobble like a weathervane atop an old church. At the same time, we talk about lots of things, because she’s a great conversationalist and because there’s almost always something interesting that we want to exchange ideas about (I also think she might secretly enjoy making people try to form words while they struggle with all their hoisting and hauling, but who knows). During one of our recent sessions she asked me both what I would like to be doing next and how my current rest period was going. That’s when I shamelessly stole the idea of The Bingo Card.

First, a little context: I’m not really working right now. I don’t want to be and I don’t need to be and I’m lucky enough that I can afford to take a lot of time off. It’s been fantastic, but also a little alien. This is a position I have never, ever been in before. I’ve certainly spent stretches of time not working, but these have been more likely to involve me worrying how I’ll pay the bills, combing through employment listings or making another futile trip to what in Britain was hilariously known as the Job Centre (and has since been rebranded, for utterly unknowable reasons, as Jobcentre Plus, perhaps reflecting how it is now even more potent in its ability to be both punitive and pointless). That means I don’t associate not working with concepts like relaxation or security. Instead, a better way of describing things would be to tell you what I associate the concept of working with. Chiefly, success and survival. And, in particular, survival.

Staying afloat.

By the beginning of December I’d wound up all the game writing that I needed to do and had already set off on the first part of a long, relatively complex rail trip down the west coast of the United States. I busied myself by booking multiple things across a four leg journey in three states. I arranged to meet lots of people. I went to a work-related event. I had museums to visit and sights to see. I was endlessly stimulated, delighted and inspired.

It was all extremely good. It also probably wasn’t what you’d call relaxing. Or a rest.

As the year wound up and January chilled its way across the calendar I booked every appointment I might have neglected or delayed during the previous year. I saw my dentist and my doctor and my therapist and made sure to go to the gym more often. I snatched up furniture that I’d procrastinated buying for so long. I resolved to create all kinds of new routines for myself based around fitness and completing personal projects. I was Getting Organised and I certainly had all the free time to devote to this. I did indeed get a lot of things done.

It probably doesn’t sound like what you’d call relaxing. Or a rest.

And as my personal trainer and I talked about the year gone and the year to come, she told me about an idea shared amongst some friends of creating a sort of bingo card of goals, tasks and ambitions. Not so much a to-do list, but a grid of things to tackle, perhaps with a reward waiting when some are ticked off. Perfect, I thought. Great. Another way to organise myself, to motivate myself. The card could be categorised, I said. Rows are types of task, while columns are a ranking of how challenging they are. The rightmost task in the writing row is the most difficult. The leftmost apartment-related task is something I could do in a day.

I built The Bingo Card a couple of days later, collating a few different to-do lists that I had lying around (because I always do). I sorted and ranked it. It was a very effective act of organisation, satisfying, but it probably doesn’t sound like what you’d call relaxing. Or a rest.

A little while ago I talked to one of my closest friends and they told me how, now that they’re finally enjoying a period of downtime after a couple of stressful years, their body is tense and confused. They feel both strangely anxious and sometimes depressed, like there is some sense of urgency coming from somewhere, even manifesting from thin air, and at times this is exhausting.

I hadn’t yet said anything about what was going on with me.

Some of my old anxiety symptoms have returned. It’s not a big deal and it’s nothing I can’t deal with, but it’s confusing in light of there being nothing I need to be anxious about. Still, there’s that shortness of breath or that pressure on my chest, or those occasional strong reactions to the silliest or most mild of things. At times this is exhausting and some days I don’t seem to have the energy that carried me through all the work I managed last year.

Another friend sent me information about a potential job while I was drafting all this, which came about two weeks after yet another friend sent me information about another potential job. I have six listings open in my browser. I feel like I should apply to something, perhaps to all of them, even though that doesn’t sound like what you’d call relaxing. Or a rest.

My mind writes at night. As I climb into bed and pull up the covers and turn out the light, it offers me all sorts of ideas about what I can do next. It creates characters and concepts and forms complete sentences that quickly grow into entire paragraphs, somehow already fully formed. It remembers things I haven’t finished and suggests new projects I could begin. It can be exciting, inspiring, but it probably doesn’t sound like what you’d call relaxing.

Or a rest.

I know all of this is ridiculous, because at the same time I’m so happy. I have freedom, I have the ability to indulge in so much more and I’m enjoying things I haven’t had time for in months. I feel very good about myself and the choices I’ve made, as well as acutely aware of how fortunate I am. But things happen when you have time and money to burn, and one of those things is the rise of a nagging guilt about how you could just not burn those things and instead apply yourself to something much more practical or productive. You could even sit down and write something to help you dissect and deconstruct all the experiences and the feelings you find you’ve been having.

All of this is far from the worst problem a person can face. I’ve certainly had to wrestle with things infinitely more difficult, but it’s a reminder that a change in circumstances doesn’t mean an immediate change in outlook, in attitude. I am trying to alter the way that my mind operates and, at some point, my body will also decide to make some alterations too. I have no timeframe for exactly when that may happen. In the meantime, I will try to get on with as little as possible and, armed with the knowledge that I'm not about to sink if take a break from paddling, I may almost be on the verge of relaxing.

Where Credit Is Due

The holidays can be rough on a lot of people. It’s that time of the year when budgets are blown all too easily as we go out on a gift-buying frenzy. Never mind that we often gift ourselves too, because human nature. We have just made it through a rough semester or some other strenuous life event, and we feel like a reward is in order.

So we shop like there’s no tomorrow, often going into debt. Few stores offer layaway these days (believe it or not, Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon still do). Those programs started to fade in the 1980s when credit became the new norm. But, those layaway programs forced us to budget better, because in order to take possession of a gift item before Christmas, you had to plan ahead and have it set aside a few months earlier, making micropayments along the way.

The last few years have seen a different form of payment option emerge, one that looks sticky sweet but may not be all it is cracked up to be: BNPL, or Buy Now, Pay Later. We see it on virtually every e-commerce site these days, an offering from a third-party provider like Klarna that operates on razor-thin slices of the action.

Oh, and late payment fees. And now the vultures of Christmas 2023 have come home to roost, because those payments have come due.

Typically when you use BNPL, you pay 25% down, take possession of the product, and then make three more payments, some starting as soon as two weeks after the purchase. There’s no interest charge, unlike credit cards. But if you forget to pay, you are slapped with a fee. And it is easy to forget payments when they are on a twice monthly schedule.

While BNPL bills itself as not being credit, it really is, and there is much worry to be had over whether missed payments affect your credit score. I am betting they do. Heck, a missed power bill can affect your score.

This last holiday shopping season saw BNPL spike in popularity, surging 14% and accounting for $16.6 billion in online spending. It’s kind of like getting an advance on your allowance. Except that you eventually—actually, pretty soon—have to pay it back or suffer consequences.

The typical BNPL person is also likely to be strapped with staggering credit card debt, mortgages, and car payments, and delinquency on BNPL payments is highly correlated with delinquencies in the others. In other words, these are high-risk persons.

It would thus not be much of a stretch to say that BNPL could be a form of predatory lending, preying upon those who have a hard time making ends meet, but who nonetheless want or need to keep buying things. It’s hard to go on a spending diet when there are gifts to be bought, as well as self-indulgences to be had.

But retailers are all too happy to offer these services, gladly ceding a small percent of the sale to Klarna or the like in order just to make the sale. Klarna makes a $0.30 flat fee per transaction, plus anywhere from 3.29% to 5.99% of the transaction. While the retailer is necessarily trimming its own margins, it effectively has outsourced its own credit department to Klarna, et al. Bingo. Big savings for retailer, and it adds significantly to sales.

The question now is how will those BNPL shoppers be able to pay for everything. I know. It is easy to be smug if you are able to avoid BNPL and simply pay cash for everything, or have so much available credit that it just doesn’t matter. That doesn’t help those who are now saddled with a lot of holiday debt that is due right now, not spread out over months and years like with credit cards. In the world of the mafia—I’m summoning my native Chicago memories here—this is where the enforcers come looking for you, carrying a baseball bat. Or worse.

I have never used BNPL, and pray I never have to. But I understand the allure and how easy it works. Klarna will grant credit—because that is what it is—to just about anyone. They are betting not on the certainty of the transaction fees from the retailer, but rather your inability to pay for it.

If there is a literal hell, maybe there is a special place for lenders like them, even though they will certainly defend themselves as having provided a bridge for those who need one the most. I get it, but I worry for the sake of our economy and everyone’s well-being if we depend on things like this to keep everything rolling along.

BATTLE CATS is the shit. Tough levels at points but there is a semblance of progress to be had. They added a lot of events and extra shit so it might be overwhelming for new people. i have no idea tho I barely started playing it again.

I'm a lover of the solitare genres (klondike and spider) but ugh the ads. I really only like them for the virtual customization of the themes that desktop comps dont provide enough of and having something offline to play on the go. ive been getting better at the four suit spider games, tho- i can feel my brain learning. 😁

Bingo games are fun! I don't have any one in particular I like the best, tho. Been a while since I played them.

Tinker Island 1 has great progression and you have the opportunity to collect the paid currency constantly, building up your gem vault. I like the garden minigame more than the actual gameplay XD.

I like Marvel Puzzle Quest for the match-3 gameplay with the marvel aesthetic. I'd recc. to play this one casually because progression is nonexistent with AND without $.

On the topic of match games, Bejeweled is a classic. 😊 I loved the butterfly rescue one back in the day and poker version was fun too- the tension is just MWAH.

Grand Summoners is for some reason spending a lot of money in ads because I'm seeing it everywhere despite having it on the exact device I'm seeing the ads on??? I'm not saying it's a problem it's just odd, lol. Micromanaging gear and teams will implode your brain but there is some strategy to it, even if you try to auto everything. They have crossover events all the time, on top of progression being kinda slow but still possible, and I'm quite happy with unexpectedly pulling a Hatsune Miku and evolving her. 😊

I would recc. trying out Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links out for a test run to see if the grind is up your alley. Very generous with rarity tickets the last time I played it.

For another simple game, billiards are fun too, and easier to play digitally than in real life, lol. You will be playing against other humans all the time, tho.

Injustice 1 or 2 and Marvel Contest of Champions have their own pros and cons, but both are finger-input fighting/brawl games with IPs so it depends on asthetic and progression i guess? If I had to choose tho, I would say Injustice is more organized in its content than Champions if that makes any sense?

Best Fiends is a cute and neat lil' bubble draw and pop game that has some progression to it, but it's been a while since I played it. Surprising for me that I even like this one since the mascots are cartoony insects.

Color Puzzle is a gradient-building/color-matching puzzle game. I played it during my art class and it made me more aware of how colors react next to each other though it can hurt your eyes.

Visual novel story/chapter games are ones you need to curate yourself to figure out which one you'll want to sit through. Chapters has sexual/explicit stories but a beefy reward system compared to Choices from what I remember, plus community engagement/contests. This likely could have changed now- I haven't checked. Other apps have (slightly) animated characters/establishing shots and some are more customizable in the protagonist and reputation systems (romance or otherwise). They all blended together in my mind like a big soup of colors, but i will tell you that the paid currency choices are never worth it.

(Pixel) Color-by-number games are fun pastimes until they hurt your eyes and drain your device battery.

South Park Phone Destroyer was fun for a bit. Until it wasn't.

Dream Girlfriend is the best Ambition gacha/character simulation game they have, prove me wrong.
