Christmas comes and goes in a comforting blanket of warmth and homeliness. There’s a roast spiral ham, veggies, even pie. Honestly, best damn eatin’s since Eddie went off to college, at least.  

Maybe that’s thanks to Benny, finally domesticating Eddie’s uncle since the guy can actually cook, but hell if Eddie’s going to complain.

Eddie’s over the moon to see his uncle finally find a partner, to know he’s not alone since Eddie’s gone all the time. It does, however, mean he’s happy to retreat back to his apartment near campus two days after Christmas in order to give his uncle and his uncle’s boyfriend privacy to ring in the new year together.

Plus, he can call Steve without worrying he’s going to get caught like some kind of teenager trying to sneak out of his window after curfew.

“How was your Christmas?” he asks, settling back against his (adult, thank you) headboard in his off-campus apartment.

“It was nice,” Steve responds, the faint sound of something being stirred in the background. “Spent it with my sister and close family. And yours? How was Wayne?”

Steve knows about Eddie’s uncle, how he ended up living with him when he was a kid. It came up almost naturally during their private sessions in the fall, but it still gives Eddie butterflies that Steve remembers and feels comfortable enough to ask about him.

“Yeah, he was great. New boyfriend. One who can actually cook since Wayne and I can do little more than microwave and barbecue,” Eddie answers, even though it’s not really true. He’s an adult, he can make a handful of basic meals and one or two complex ones, he’s not completely incompetent. But the fact that both men know Eddie’s fibbing doesn’t stop him from relishing in the chuckle Steve rewards him with.

The other thing that’s happened during their communication is Eddie admitting how much he likes Steve taking care of him. He already knew the professor was caring and considerate, but experiencing this level of attention and care is kind of outside of Eddie’s wheelhouse. Steve is sweet and kind, supportive but challenging, and god damn does he push Eddie to his limits already. Simply put: Eddie’s willing to give this man everything.

“Is it bad if I say yes?” he asks.

Steve snickers, more shuffling happening on the other line before he responds. “Of course not, Eddie. I’m more than happy to take care of you any way you need.”

Eddie does not giggle, but it’s a close call. 

The two men chat while Steve eats his dinner, and Eddie lets the sheer normalcy of the phone call settle him. By the time Steve’s finished and watched his dishes, however, he’s a little antsy, feels sort of like he’s been made to wait for something even though Steve hasn’t promised him anything except a discussion about spring semester.

There’s a quiet moment where Eddie thinks he can picture Steve settling atop his own bed, hearing a quiet groan that, even out of a sexual context, still makes Eddie tingle a bit.

“Still with me, baby?” Steve asks after a while, and Eddie realizes he’s been so comfortable that neither has said much for almost 20 minutes, just existing in each other’s presence — from miles away, but still.

“Yes, sir,” Eddie responds automatically.

“Hmm. And are you decent?”

He doesn’t miss the way Steve’s eyes seem to rove over the parts of Eddie he can see, a small pout gracing his lips before pulling into a smirk.

“Probably better you’re dressed anyway,” Steve says, like he’s not shirtless himself. Eddie realizes quickly that Steve must have switched to his laptop, because he can see everything from the older man’s sternum and up, including a delicious amount of chest hair that Eddie wants to bury his face in. “We need to lay some ground rules.”

Eddie’s horny musings come to a screeching halt. “Ground rules?”

“Of course,” Steve replies. Eddie reaches blindly for his own laptop and gets the FaceTime switched over while Steve keeps talking. “When’s your expected date of graduation?”

Eddie’s mind blanks for a second at the odd topic choice. “Uh… December of next year. I have two more classes in the spring and plan to spend the summer writing my thesis.”

“Before, sir.” He’s got most of it outlined and he’s submitting his proposal before Spring Break. If his timeline goes to plan, he won’t be wasting extra time (and money) in the fall trying to get done what he can easily do on his own time over the summer.

Steve nods, more movement off camera. “And I assume you plan to write on Early Modern literature.”

“Yes, sir,” Eddie replies, confusion growing about this line of questioning.

Steve nods again, then looks back up at Eddie. “Very well. Since the chances of me being your thesis marker are high, I can’t, in good conscience, escalate our relationship until you’ve received your thesis marks.”

Eddie’s heart plummets. Honestly, he should have known that would be a possibility. Starting an affair with the one professor whose speciality is Eddie’s chosen topic was bound to come with some kind of drawback. He just figured they were both consenting adults and as long as they kept it under wraps for a while, it would be fine. 

“I understand, Steve,” Eddie says, but even he can hear how dejected he sounds.

“Baby, look at me,” Steve coos, and Eddie tears his eyes away from where they’d fallen to his lap to look up at his professor. “I want to make it clear that I do want you. Badly. I’m just concerned about my ability to remain impartial if I know how you feel wrapped around my cock. Daisy— what is your idea of the perfect date?

I want to say something fancy, because I do have Dream Date Ideas that are v fancy (a night to the theatre, or going on a slightly longer drive to visit something interesting, a nice dinner somewhere normally neither person could afford but you can if you split the bill, etc) but all of those rely on me being in the right frame of mind and prepared to deal with any new or weird sensory stuff. And unfortunately, my brain isn't doing so hot in regulating that at the current time.

So for now, I would definitely lean towards something like a regular movie date, or even better for me personally:

Rent a hotel room, split the cost (so neither of you have to know where the other person lives if you aren't at a stage to be trusting them with that info yet), and have a movie night and/or gaming night there. You can order room service, be comfortable and assured that if the person winds up being an ass, you can call downstairs and get the fuck out of there. Plus, if it gets to the point of fucking, you're already on the bed and can multitask with whatever you're watching.

It's admittedly a weirdly lazy one (or so I've been told lmao), but I don't like the idea of putting high expectations on this stuff if you don't have/want to. It should be enough to want to hang out together at all, see how you feel abt each other, and go from there to different/fancier/etc date stuff.

I'm working on my Izzy Hands Bingo Card prompts (six done! But more to go if I want to get a blackout on the card!) and also plan to do some of the prompts for the Our Flag Au-gust post that's been going around.

Aside from those I should really be trying to make a video poem for Button Poetry's video contest (opens in a few days!), but I've such low confidence in my writing at the moment that I'm not sure i can be vulnerable enough to write a decent poem lmao.

Lavender— what is currently on your mind (aside from this ask game)?

I'm stoned off my ass, so a stupid number of things, which is only slightly more than when I'm sober, but-

I want to be more productive, but I keep burning out whenever I even vaguely try to put the metaphorical pedal to the metal and I don't know how to fix myself. There are dishes I need to do. I need to remember how to be vulnerable and a little more stupid and vapid so I can get out of my own head and be brave enough to post more writing, original and fic. I need another tattoo. I need to ace my job interview tomorrow so I can make more money faster and be able to afford said tattoo. I need my grandfather to be okay after his knee replacement sx this fall (he probably will be but he's got high blood pressure and our family has an unfortunate pattern of dying during routine medical procedures, and he already nearly did that once with his appendix while he was in the Air Force, but who's to say that doesn't mean this time it would be The Time?) I should be better. I want to learn to be okay with being worse.

I have worked in the service industry - mainly hotel. & it's not just California (though I am glad for them striking). The service/hospitality industry is where people feel the most justified in treating you like shit. Because it's the 'most basic labor' that most people can do.

But they don't realize. When they can't cook or don't know how or don't want to - they have someone do it for them. Cleaning? You can have someone do it for you. Lawn care? Hire someone. Some place to sleep? A place is prepared & maintained for you.

Do you know what the pay is for *most* FOH (front of house) restaurant workers? $3-7/hr. Because they expect you to make the difference up with tips. Tips aren't wages. I'm going to say it again - tips aren't wages! There are days when business is slow & you still have bills. Or the fact most of the work is part time. & you have to overwork yourself with multiple shifts - if you're even able to get multiple shifts because places overstaff. Some places make you share tips. Or don't let you keep tips at all (it happens).

BOH (back of house) workers get paid $5-13/hr. & they're lucky if FOH shares tips with them (some places do. But again, tips are not wages). & again, most of those positions are part time & overstaffed.

In hotel, even the 5 Star ones. I have worked at a few 5 Stars - the pay is abysmal: $7.25-13/hr. A handful of hotels can go as high as $13.75-14/hr (if you're lucky). Most of those positions are part time, but due to Covid there's an employee shortage. So you'll get full time plus overtime, but at what cost?

FOH at hotel (desk clerk & concierge) typically don't get tips & most hotels frown on it. Meanwhile, BOH (bellhops, housekeeping & room service) get tips (if you're lucky). Some hotels have laundry as a separate department from housekeeping & they don't get tips at all. Spas are a separate entity even if they belong to the hotel & aren't a third party.

People also pay & treat service workers like shit because they believe it's work menial enough for young people to gain experience. Which also adds a layer of bias, "Young people are dumb & don't deserve nice things. They have to earn the right to be treated like a full fledged person by doing this "crappy job" first."

But then it feeds into, "That person is no longer young & still working that crappy job as an adult. Something MUST be wrong with them - dumb, lazy, drug addict, alcoholic, immature, etc."

((& more times than I can count. I have engaged with people who view service people outside of their place of work with as much fear & vitriol as they do homeless people. They flinch & eye you & keep their distance & won't make eye contact. You can almost see their skin crawl. Because in their mind - they're the same thing - people who don't deserve respect.))

& then it comes full circle to, "Ah, you're elderly & need money? Here's this easy job that anyone can do & it's respectable enough for you to do. It doesn't pay a lot. But you're old. What could you possibly need a whole lot of money for? You have a house right? Transportation? Surely, you're collecting SSI or something as your main income? Because you're old & should have your life figured out. Because we should only pay you enough for you to have petty cash - for bingo or something."

Sometimes I’m getting fitter. During one of our recent sessions she asked me both what I would like to be doing next and how my current rest period was going. That’s when I shamelessly stole the idea of The Bingo Card.

Still, there’s that shortness of breath or that pressure on my chest, or those occasional strong reactions to the silliest or most mild of things. At times this is exhausting and some days I don’t seem to have the energy that carried me through all the work I managed last year.

Another friend sent me information about a potential job while I was drafting all this, which came about two weeks after yet another friend sent me information about another potential job. I have six listings open in my browser. I feel like I should apply to something, perhaps to all of them, even though that doesn’t sound like what you’d call relaxing. Or a rest.

My mind writes at night. As I climb into bed and pull up the covers and turn out the light, it offers me all sorts of ideas about what I can do next. It creates characters and concepts and forms complete sentences that quickly grow into entire paragraphs, somehow already fully formed. It remembers things I haven’t finished and suggests new projects I could begin. It can be exciting, inspiring, but it probably doesn’t sound like what you’d call relaxing.

I know all of this is ridiculous, because at the same time I’m so happy. I have freedom, I have the ability to indulge in so much more and I’m enjoying things I haven’t had time for in months. But things happen when you have time and money to burn, and one of those things is the rise of a nagging guilt about how you could just not burn those things and instead apply yourself to something much more practical or productive. You could even sit down and write something to help you dissect and deconstruct all the experiences and the feelings you find you’ve been having.

All of this is far from the worst problem a person can face. I’ve certainly had to wrestle with things infinitely more difficult, but it’s a reminder that a change in circumstances doesn’t mean an immediate change in outlook, in attitude. I am trying to alter the way that my mind operates and, at some point, my body will also decide to make some alterations too. I have no timeframe for exactly when that may happen. In the meantime, I will try to get on with as little as possible and, armed with the knowledge that I'm not about to sink if take a break from paddling, I may almost be on the verge of relaxing.
