Billy Al Bengston in his Hawaii We lost Billy Al Bengston October 8, 2022 Born in Dodge City, Kansas June 7, 1934 I was introduced to Billy by Dewain Valentine in 1979. Like all the older artists I met in Venice then, Billy was very kind to me. I puzzled over why because sometimes they didn't seem so nice to each other. I figured they came up together and were just competitive, but since I was the kid, I wasn't much of a threat. And as a sculptor and not a painter, maybe I got away clean? These artists, unlike those that followed, presented their work straight-up without irony or any didactic back story. They wanted their work to move you, to wow you, to please you, and to inspire you. I became an artist because I saw art as a kid that did just these things. Billy was a charismatic, influential, smart, funny, often sweet, sometimes cynical, and always complicated artist. Isn’t a great artist necessarily this way? Yes. And he was my friend now sadly gone. .. more than ten years I'm building these cabin/shelter on a property close to #neuruppin #brandenburg.. In the first cabin there are portraits of #robertobolãno (my favourite writer) #wols #eugenschönebeck #cytwombly #billyalbengston #umbertoeco... On the backsidewall a #bronzecast of a #relief from 1989... The last #cabin #shelter is all done by old neglected leftover woodplanks..
