I find myself somewhat behind on posting new zines to my shop. So, soon I will be adding three new mini zines!
One is a fun little deep dive into some aspects of Scream (1996), another is an exploration of the FINAL GIRL TROPE (which I will be writing more about in the future), and the last is the first of a new limited series where I break down other horror movie references and influences in Hannibal's cinematography!
So, all of those will be out soon.
I have also developed a series of illustrated prints depicting rare and unusual words.

Jazz Guitarist and Session Player Dean Brown Dies at 68
- “He was a powerful life force, totally committed to his art,” David Sanborn says
Dean Brown, the jazz guitarist, in-demand session player and solo artist, has died after battling cancer, his wife said.
“Dean's life was a vibrant tapestry of passion, innovation and boundless creativity,” Ruth Brown wrote on the GoFundMe page set up for her husband.
“His departure leaves a void that can never be filled, and my soul aches with the loss of a musical genius, an extraordinary partner and a loving companion. His music was not only a reflection of his talent but also a soundtrack to our shared life.”
Brown died Jan. 26; he was 68.
“I’m heartbroken,” David Sanborn said on the loss of his “dear friend and musical compatriot” Brown.
“He was a powerful life force, totally committed to his art,” Sanborn said. “I feel grateful to have known him.”
In addition to Sanborn, Brown’s credits include appearances on “hundreds of recordings” by the likes of the Brecker Brothers, Billy Cobham, Roberta Flack, Bob James, George Duke and many others.
Brown was “one of the baddest guitarists and stage performers ever,” Randy Brecker said. Ray Fuller, meanwhile, remembered his fellow axeman as “an amazing guitar legend” and “one of the kindest people on Earth.”
Brown released his solo debut, Groove Warrior, in 2004 and went on to issue four more LPs while backing others and fronting his own bands.
“May Dean Brown rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

Tapping Out
Hiking the PCT over Mount San Jacinto (10,834 ft) is not always a 'walk in the park' despite the fact a PCT hiker does not have to go to the top and the trail passes through Mount San Jacinto State Park. It is a steep climb and descent no matter what direction you are coming from. In 2017 my friend Billie Robinson and I were coming from Idyllwild. We camped on the approach to San Jacinto and the infamous Fuller Ridge that is part of hiking experience. In late April there was still snow up high. Trail finding was not without its challenge.
Billie and I made our way over but by the time we were on the Palm Springs side of things the wind had kicked up and the light was fading. We chose to camp just off the trail in one of the few established campsites we could muster. Despite our tent blowing down and getting it back up and secure it flapped all night. Nevertheless we did get enough sleep so that we were refreshed for the hike ahead to I-!0 where we were being met by my sister-in-law. I would be saying good-bye to Billie and picking up a resupply to continue my hike toward Cajon Pass.
The next morning came brightly and with new spring in our steps we began the steady descent to the valley floor. If you haven't been to this place the view is both stunning and shocking. Spread below are massive wind farms that are in the perfect place to capture the steady breezes blowing through the valley opening. In the distance looking northeast is Palm Springs and its neighbor Indio. Looking north is the San Gorgonio Wilderness. The stunning parts include the distant peaks, and the visual impression the wind farms leave with the viewer. The shocking parts include the impact of civilization as illustrated by the long ribbon of interstate highway and the parallel busy railroad tracks combined with large tracks of housing and tall buildings housing hotels and casinos all anchored by the rows and rows of wind mills just below.
Dodging the occasional rattlesnake and intrigued by the rather large lizards sunning themselves on the rocky outcrops we kept heading down. As the morning progressed the temperatures went up. This south face has no shade and lots of sun exposure. It was one of those moments when we could see your destination but instead of getting ever closer it seemed as though it kept drifting away from us.
Finally we reached the bottom where the trail joins a road. It is here that the local water district has kindly installed a very welcome and wet drinking fountain. Another shocking discovery. So out of context with our surroundings but so weirdly normal too.
Tumblr media
Obviously this picture was taken in the night...a cooler time to arrive and leaving one less thirsty for sure!
From the fountain, we were greeted by a couple more rattles that kept us attentive. Across a fairly flat brushy desert landscape we trekked. We were guided by a series of 8-10 foot poles painted yellow near their tops and adorned with PCT emblems. Slowly we finally arrived at I-10 and our rendezvous point. Happily a trail angel had set up under the highway overpass and we enjoyed a cold drink and a piece of fresh fruit.
Tumblr media
We had come a long way already and I had a ways yet to go. Meeting up with a drinking fountain in the desert was right out of a Gary Larson cartoon. I have and would meet up with other unusual and memorable people, places, and things along my way on the PCT but nothing quite like the fountain at the base of Mount San Jacinto.

For all my fellow name nerds out there, I am very pleased to present the second annual "Gloyd Roberson Memorial List of Actual Human Children Who Wrote Letters to Santa in 1920s/30s Oklahoma".
These aren’t all necessarily “weirder than Gloyd” but fall into three rough categories which I’ve dubbed: “that’s got a nice ring to it”, “if I used this in a novel it would be considered too unrealistic” and “you’ve got 5 seconds to name a character that lives in 1920s Oklahoma, GO!”:

Jared Padalecki Joins ‘Fire Country’ For Guest Arc That Could Lead To New Franchise Offshoot
EXCLUSIVE: Jared Padalecki is returning to series television. The former Supernatural star, coming off a four-season run as the lead of Walker, has been tapped for a three-episode arc on the upcoming third season of CBS‘ hit drama series Fire Country, headlined and executive produced by Max Thieriot.
He will play Camden, a SoCal firefighter and maverick with a surfer swagger who is a force to be reckoned with and immediately recognizes Bode’s (Thieriot) raw talent.
The deal with Fire Country producer CBS Studios is strictly for the recurring role, sources said. Given Padalecki’s status as a popular leading man with two hit series under his belt, I hear there is a possibility for the guest stint to lead to a new spinoff headlined by him that would join the upcoming Sheriff Country.
Sources stress that the idea is still in its nascent stages. And similarly to the NCIS franchise, which originated on CBS and has generated four domestic offshoots on the network but has also expanded into streaming with the latest spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva (as well as the streaming/broadcast NCIS: Sydney), a new Fire Country spinoff could be for broadcast or streaming. Reps for CBS and CBS Studios declined comment.
Fire Country, which was the most watched new broadcast series in its freshman season, was quickly identified by the CBS leadership as a potential franchise anchor that could spawn multiple spinoffs.
“We are focused on mass-appeal franchises,” CBS President and CEO George Cheeks said in June 2023. “This season’s number one show was Fire Country, which completely lends itself to building out a whole new universe… It became very clear that not only was the show special, it really felt like this could be a great example of us building together a franchise from scratch.”
The first Fire Country spinoff, the Morena Baccarin-starring Sheriff Country, which started off as a planted spinoff episode on the mothership series this past season, was recently picked up to series for 2025-26.
Keeping Padalecki in the fold has been a priority for CBS Studios following the end of its CW drama Walker, on which he was star and executive producer, leading to creating the opportunity for him on Fire Country. Walker was canceled for financial reasons despite being the network’s most watched series.
Fire Country averages more than 10 million viewers per episode in multi-platform viewing. (Live+35-day on Paramount + and CBS TVE)
Season 1 became available on Netflix in the US August 1 and has already reached #3 in the streamer’s daily rankings. This is an additional domestic streaming window for Fire Country whose first two seasons are on Paramount+. It is designed to give the show additional exposure ahead of its Oct. 18 Season 3 premiere on CBS.
From creators and executive producers Tony Phelan, Joan Rater and Thieriot, inspired by Thieriot’s experiences growing up in Northern California, the series follows Bode Donovan (Thieriot), a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in Northern California, which sends him back to his hometown.
Billy Burke, Kevin Alejandro, Diane Farr, Stephanie Arcila, Jordan Calloway and Jules Latimer also star. Tia Napolitano, who also serves as showrunner, executive produces alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed of Jerry Bruckheimer Television.
Since the end of Walker, Padalecki also has discussed a role on the upcoming fifth and final season of Prime Video’s The Boys, developed and executive produced by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke. He is repped by UTA, Industry Entertainment and Fuller Law.

Explanation of Agatha's Siphon/Absorption powers
Joanna Robinson: We’ve so enjoyed trying to parse, to your point, when Agatha is telling the truth and when she’s lying and when we get to see her put on her performance and when the mask slips and only we the camera get to see what’s going on in her face and all of that that’s been really, really fun to parse. A question we have at the end of this finale is, we really believe her when she said to Billy that she couldn’t control what happened with Alice and then we see her have some measure of control over it when it comes to Billy. Can you track the truth in any of that? To, again, use a Mallory word: the ‘progress’ inside of her when it comes to controlling that power. Jac Schaeffer: Yeah, I do think there is there is progress to her power and I sort of see it on sort of an instinctual level. You know, it’s not something that we’d like put on page or even pitch to Marvel. It’s sort of my impression of it. I think that she– there’s something kind of animalistic about her power to me. It’s very tied to appetite. I see her as a woman who can’t get full, and I think when she takes Alice, she’s so hungry at that time. And it’s such a surprise! You know, normally, she cons witches. They blast her, she takes it (power). But she (Agatha) gets blasted out of nowhere and it feels so good and she’s powerful! This is the source of her power so I do believe her, and in our discussions, that was the thing, is when she says to Billy: ‘I couldn’t control it.’ She means it. I also see that as a moment of vulnerability and it’s tragic to me that Billy doesn’t believe her. You know, that’s one of those… sort of Disconnect but I think she is able to turn it off with Billy. Just to get in the weeds about MCU power: He (Billy) has chaos magic, so she gets fuller with him. She gets so much from him and it’s a bottomless well. So, you know, I think, at that moment, she can stop and I think she does stop because it’s him but I think she’s gotten enough where she can be in her full look, and her full glory and feel like herself.
Agatha's Powers During the Kiss
Jac Schaeffer: I also would extend that to the moment of the kiss of death, which I– there are many things I love about it was an idea very early that I was obsessed with, and I’m so glad that we were able to get it on screen with these performers. But to me, I also really loved that in every other instance, she has to be blasted in order to take power and this is the first time that she’s taking power and it’s from a kiss, and to me, that’s very fertile. Because I think a kiss with Rio at this point in their relationship is tender and sexy, and sort of ravenous but also toxic and violent and a death blow. It’s all those things all at once, but it is different, we’ve never seen Agatha take power in that way and I would point that I wouldn’t really call it ‘progress’ as much as I would call it kind of an evolution.
——
Agatha’s kind of like a vampire but for magical powers and life forces instead of blood. And, Jac seems to imply that Agatha has some sort of hunger for magic.
It really is a kind of addiction metaphor.

Mi amor
Tumblr media
Billie stood nervously at the doorway, her heart racing as the lively sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air. She glanced at you, giving you a hesitant smile. Tonight was the night she’d meet your family for a traditional Puerto Rican dinner.
As you both stepped inside, the delicious aroma of arroz con gandules and pernil wrapped around you. The living room was filled with colorful decorations and family photos, showcasing vibrant moments from past gatherings.
“¡Mira quién llegó!” your aunt exclaimed, her arms wide open as she rushed to embrace Billie. The warmth of the welcome eased Billie’s nerves a bit. “We’ve been waiting for you! Come, sit!”
Billie sat down at the large dining table, where plates of food were already piled high. Your grandmother served her a generous portion of rice and pork, beaming with pride.
“¡Espero que te guste, mija!” she said, her voice filled with warmth.
Billie smiled back, trying her best to remember the Spanish she’d practiced. “¡Gracias, abuela! Se ve delicioso,” she replied, earning a delighted chuckle from your family.
As dinner continued, laughter filled the air, and the conversation flowed naturally. Billie listened intently, picking up bits of Spanish and laughing along. You leaned over, whispering a few phrases she should try out.
“Remember, just say ‘¡Qué rico!’ when you like the food!” you whispered, your eyes sparkling with mischief.
Billie nodded, her heart racing. When your grandmother served her another helping, Billie took a deep breath and said, “¡Qué rico!” The room erupted in laughter and applause, and Billie’s face flushed with joy.
As the evening wore on, your family shared stories of their Puerto Rican heritage, their favorite beach spots on the island. Billie felt herself getting lost in the rich culture, captivated by the way your family spoke of their roots.
“Do you have a favorite word in Spanish yet?” you asked, your playful tone drawing Billie’s attention.
Billie thought for a moment, then grinned. “I think ‘mi amor’ is my favorite. It sounds so sweet.”
Your heart melted, and you squeezed Billie’s hand under the table. “You can use it on me anytime,” you replied softly.
As the night drew to a close, Billie wanted to leave a lasting impression. She turned to you, who was glowing with pride. Leaning in close, she whispered, “Te quiero,” her voice soft yet sincere.
You felt a rush of warmth and joy fill your heart at her words. The family around you noticed the moment, smiling knowingly, and a chorus of “Aww” erupted from the table.
Billie felt a rush of warmth as she realized how much this night meant to both of you. Embracing your culture, connecting with your family, and sharing this experience made her heart feel fuller than ever. She couldn’t wait for the next family gathering, where she’d learn even more words and phrases to make you smile.
