"[THE ALBUM] WAS REFLECTING THE DECADENCE OF A TIME WHEN WE WERE LIVING FROM LIMOUSINE TO PENTHOUSE..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a March 1973 Rolling Stone print/promotional ad for the "Billion Dollar Babies" LP, the sixth studio album by American hard rock/shock rock band ALICE COOPER, and released on February 25, 1973.
PIC #2: A concert poster for the "Billion Dollar Babies" 1973 continental U.S. tour, spanning 48 concerts in total. That's nearly one concert for every U.S. state!
"It was reflecting the decadence of a time when we were living from limousine to penthouse to the finest of everything including… well, the finest of everything. We couldn’t believe people were actually paying us to do this. We would have done it for free, because we were just a garage band who happened to be at the right place at the right time."
-- ALICE COOPER on "Billion Dollar Babies" being their most decadent album
BDB/FUN/TRIVIA FACT: A partial list of props from the tour, which required 40 tons of equipment, included a dentist’s drill, a surgical table for a sawing-in-half machine, four whips, six hatchets, 22,000 sparklers, 300 baby dolls, 58 mannequins, 14 bubble machines, 28 gallons of bubble juice, 6,000 mirror parts and 250,000 packages of bubble bath. As Cooper said at the time, “the sicker you kids get, the greater shows we’ll have for you.”

husband material
it is finally here! as promised my loves <3
so to keep my formula one girlies satisfied and fueled, i put this together until my university work slows down for a bit which may be a little hard since this term we are covering all the theory topics of my business degree like accounting and law, i'm sorry my lovely's <3 i will try and write when i can but it's literally only week one and i've already got three assessments due next week <3
pairing; lewis hamilton x phoebe windsor [original character]
blurb; this is a list of cute things husband lewis hamilton and his wife phoebe windsor with features from their daughter sage hamilton do in my smau series that i'm working on called the billion dollar baby, this story features a original character but for your reading pleasure, i've used 'you' and 'y/n' in this little snippet <3
currently playing; my love mine all mine by mitski "cause my love is mine, all mine, i love mine, mine, mine. nothing in the world belongs to me but my love mine, all mine, all mine"
Tumblr media
how you two met;
you are friends with my original character broadway actress marceline 'marcy' bennett [from my story broadway bug] who is dating charles leclerc.
you've been best friends for the past fifteen years of your lives and you attended the silverstone race with her, hanging out in the ferrari garage most of the time.
you met lewis when you ran into roscoe and stopped to pat him due to you being a dog lover and having one yourself.
marcy ended up introducing you to lewis, who was absolutely floored the very first time he met you.
and i'm talking speechless, stumbling over his words and weak in the knees down bad for you [the way i want this]
when it comes to your jobs;
your relationship is secret for the longest time, you two love having a private relationship and just being in the moment with eachother so when your relationship is finally revealed to the world no thanks to paparazzi, you can finally support your husband at his races.
and when you can't make it to a race, you always send him the same text message.
Tumblr media
your often filmed at races in the garage jumping up and down.
he gives you a necklace with his race number on it but unknown to him you already have it tattooed on you.
your a singer and he often ends up helping you write lyrics even though your styles are completely different from eachothers.
Tumblr media
he promotes your company that you have on the side selling bourbon, your company being called the chamomile company.
your company is a sponsor for whatever team lewis happens to be apart of, where lewis goes, your companies sponsorship follows.
whenever you are on tour and he can make it to a show, he's often filmed in the VIP tent yelling "that's MY wife"
and you two are often the paddock favs in your matching or mostly matching outfits. [i did my best]
Tumblr media
whipped;
this boy is so utterly and completely whipped for you.
he is completely weak in the knees for anything that you do.
he's a utter gentleman and pulls out every chair and opens every single door for you.
he carries both your heels and your bags and sometimes when he's feeling extra loving he'll just carry you.
he steals your perfume when he leaves for the race season so that he can spray it the hotel pillows to make it seem like your with him, you always have to have two bottles for this very reason.
this man will not stop gushing about you, in interviews or in conversations with other drivers, george is begging him end of season to just shut the hell up.
he is in love with your voice and will often call you at any time of the day just to hear you talk.
before you two even started dating, he was told of your love of flowers my marcy and sent them to you all the time and he kept doing it long after you got together and even after you got married.
you've just come to expect random surprise bouquets at this point, you have a whole instagram story highlight dedicated to the bouquets you've gotten.
Tumblr media
kisses, cuddles and all thing cute;
lewis will often wake you up with kisses along your shoulders and back.
if your standing together and his hands on your hips, it's almost always likely that his thumbs are under your shirt hem and gently rubbing your skin.
cheek kisses galore, whenever he passes you in fact.
belly kisses, even before you were pregnant, he would just lay between your legs and kiss at your belly imaging what you would look like pregnant.
whenever you've been apart for long amounts of time, whenever you see him again, your sprinting to get to him and just so eager to have his lips on yours.
random surprise kisses are a definite.
and if lewis is cuddling you from behind standing or laying in bed, he's bound to be nuzzling against your neck, placing sweet little kisses the skin.
he kisses all of your tattoos and even sometimes traces them in content silence and peace.
you will also do the same with him from time to time.
you two are always holding hands and you both find it bittersweet to let go.
if your sitting next to lewis and your tried from a long day of travel, your head is resting on his shoulder while he plays with your hair.
sudden hugs from behind from both of you are a thing, one time you surprised him at a race and when you hugged him from behind, lewis freaked out but calmed down as soon as he heard your soft whispered "i love you lew"
your a stomach sleeper and lewis will just lightly run his fingers up and down your spine while you sleep.
there is moments when your face is squished in between lewis fingers while he kisses your cheek.
Tumblr media
you both grew up in england and so if one if you wakes up before the other, you make eachother proper english tea.
when he cuddles you from behind while just standing around in the garage and the camera captures you wriggling in his arms.
"ugh.. bub stop moving" lewis would whine and pull you tighter in his grip to which you would protest but stop when he says "you feel too good in my arms to let go just yet" while he nuzzles against your cheek.
when you two are both on a break and this man wants to get out of bed early, you can bet you are dragging his ass back to bed "not today you don't" with a cute grumpy look on your face.
THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE!!!
you often have to stand on your tippy toes to kiss lewis and sometimes if your in the garage, a mechanic will give you a step stool so you can kiss or even just hug him properly.
lewis is the kind of husband to always give you the first bite of his food cause he knows you want to try it but just won't admit it.
you will pull lewis in by his jacket to kiss him.
he'll blast your music in the garage.
if he comes home during a break from the race season but you had errands to run, lewis will often find notes like this.
Tumblr media
if lewis gets bored which can happen really easily and he texts you but doesn't get a response, the texts will often get cute aggressive, like if your in a meeting and your phone is on silent once it's over you often show your manager the texts and how peeved lewis gets over you not answering him for an extended period of time.
Tumblr media
and there was a moment after you moved in with him and you guys were in your honeymoon phase that you were so excited to spend the first day in your now shared home together that you woke him up by jumping on the bed, yelling "get up, get up, get up! it's a very pretty morning!" but lewis who had come home late the previous night from a sponsorship event just put his hands on your legs as you stood over him to stop you from jumping around, gazed up you with soft sleepy eyes and muttered "do you know what else sounds real pretty... sleep" and then he tugged you back down and wrapped you in a cuddle.
the animals;
roscoe is a cuddler and often intrudes on your intimate moments or romantic cuddles cause he feels left out.
you two are dog parents well before becoming real parents but even your dogs have different vibes.
Tumblr media
and before you met lewis you were a cat mum too, to a calico cat named boba who seemed to inherit your adhd and hyperactivity, you know this by the video's lewis will send you of her when your away on tour or just cause she was being strange per usual.
Tumblr media
nicknames + cute things lewis says;
lewis's nicknames for you include; mama, sweetcheeks, baby girl, little one, wifey, mrs hamilton and my personal fav bub.
your nicknames for him include; papa bear, baby boy, lew, hubby and my lifeline.
when lewis get's approached by your fans and they ask "are you-" this man won't even let them finish their sentence before he's very proudly blurting out "hell yeah i am... i'm y/n's husband"
down and dirty;
you wearing lewis's clothes is one of his biggest turn on's.
there is no quickies with lewis, this man likes to take his time.
he is in love with your legs.
panty band snaps, he loves hearing you squeal every time he does it.
the both of you are suckers for praise.
another turn on for him is when you wear his clothes for an extended period of time and then end up smelling like him.
he loves being able to eat you out, he'll drop to his knees just about anywhere.
and let's finish on a cute note with family;
lewis is very over protective when your pregnant, if your walking through the paddock or a high traffic area or anywhere basically, he's got you tucked tightly against his side and if your sitting, his hand will always be on the bump.
he dedicates his race wins to you and your daughter; sage.
roscoe is sage's own personal bodyguard, roscoe loves that little girl so much that while you were pregnant, he would lay with his head resting on your belly like he knew his future best friend was growing within.
he'll often message you during the season asking for bump updates while your pregnant with sage but it turns out that you happen to be pregnant at the same time as marcy and so lewis will often get a picture of your bumps together and because he and charles are teammates at this point, he'll chuckle and show charles the photo who just has this lovesick smile on his face.
Tumblr media
and i think it's safe to say that sage is a daddy's girl through and through, in fact she has lewis wrapped around her little finger even if it does scare the crap out of him the minute she shows an interest in racing.
Tumblr media
i hope you guys enjoyed and feedback is very much welcome, love you lovely's <3

BRINGING UP BABY
Joe Elliott doesn't want children - he's got enough on his hands nursing a billion dollar baby called Def Leppard. Mat Snow hears why arguably the world's most successful rock 'n' roll band can still stroll down the street without being recognised. Pictures by Peter Anderson
BY THE time you read this, you'll know something that was on the cards a couple of weeks ago but by no means a dead cert.
That is whether the British Phonographic Institute, in all its majesty and wisdom, opened an envelope at the black tie, gala dinner and announced that the award for Rockin' Pneumonia, Boogie-Woogie Flu And All-Round Fabness goes not to Brother Beyond, Yazz, nor even Bros, but to a bunch of blokes who won't see 25 again and who play guitars, drums and stuff often quite loud.
Yes, you will know now what Def Leppard's Joe Elliott and I didn't know then whether there will be a BPI BRITS Award for Best British Band decorating his parents' mantelpiece.
"Def Leppard winning anything is hilarious," he chuckles. "It's nice to be nominated, but we're never going to win anything. We're a stick-in-the- mud heavy metal band - Long 'air and jeans: we can't vote for them, can we?"
JOE ELLIOTT is in mellow mood. After nearly three months off, following the highly lucrative but tiring 14-month Hysteria tour, he at last has time to chew the fat back home in a beautiful bay just outside Dublin, where he is spending his 'year out' of the UK for tax reasons.
Unlike the other four Leps, who get itchy after only three weeks off the road, Joe needs the time to lounge around, catch up with his listening and watch a few videos.
"I've been revelling in the fact that I've been able to get a sore throat and it doesn't matter!"
A week in the sun apart, Joe has not been neglecting his career as the mouthpiece of arguably the most commercially successful rock 'n' roll band in the world today.
There will be rehearsals for the new album. (Robert 'Mutt' Lange, the so-called 'sixth Lep', will not be producing). Hopes are high that it might be in the shops sooner than 1991, given that their two previous albums, 'Pyromania' and 'Hysteria', have been beaten only by Michael Jackson in terms of how long we've had to wait between releases - and how many copies we've gone out and bought. But, right now, Joe has the luxury of reflecting on his place in the scheme of things.
It seems that what he ultimately craves is to be recognised as one of the true rock greats, on a par with the people who turned him on in the first place, back when he was a soccer- crazy, only child growing up in Sheffield, when he was a bored youth maintaining stocks of grinding wheels and oil rags for Osborne Mushet Tools.
Back then, people like Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull, T Rex and, especially, Mott The Hoople kept him sane. Def Leppard's record company, Phonogram, have signed Ian Hunter and it's the best news Joe's had all year.
His list of heroes includes just about everybody who made a raucous noise in the '70s his years of yearning to escape the humdrum world of work and home. That need is still Joe's guiding force so he won't be taking a cue from his friend Jon Bon Jovi's 'New Jersey' and calling his next album 'South Yorkshire'. "Can you imagine it?" he guffaws.
"Ian Hunter summed it up brilliantly in his book Diary Of A Rock 'N' Roll Star - 'I left my heart in Watford?' How can you sing about Scunthorpe or Huddersfield?
"Let's face it, everybody would say, Fair play for doing it - but they'd laugh at it whether they were fans, journalists or friends. I remember when Saxon had this song called 'Northern Lady', and it just stank. Leave it out! Jesus Christ! Flat caps and Yorkshire pudding is the impression people get, even though we all know it's not like that. "They don't all keep pigeons, which is what a lot of people south of Nottingham seem to think. There's no romance, no beaches in Sheffield. A car chase in San Francisco is always going to look better than one through Hackney. But then they could never have Sherlock Holmes in America. It's a different world.
"I'd sooner go for the British approach, which is totally ambiguous: it doesn't say anything, it doesn't mean anything," Joe goes on. "I can't even describe what half the bloody songs are about; they just sound alright. You are what you listen to. You explain what T Rex's lyrics are about. If you can figure his out, then you can figure mine out. 'Hub-cap diamond star halo' means more to me than 'I went down to the river', I'm afraid. People can relate to that Springsteeny thing but, to me, T Rex made your imagination work harder.
"If I wrote from experience, I don't think it would sound very good me singing about the last five-a-side soccer game I had.
"Whenever I sing about women, it's always invented," says Joe, rebutting the charge of sexism which, in fact, I hadn't levelled at him.
"Who's to say that the honkytonk woman ever existed? It could have been a complete figment of Jagger's imagination. I used to write from personal experience don't think I never have.
"On the second album, we wrote about all sorts of stories; Steve (Clark) once hijacked a taxi in Paris and tried to write a song about it. But it just sounded like a piece of shit, so we scrapped it, rewrote the lyrics, made them up, and it was a lot better."
SO, IF not 'South Yorkshire', S perhaps 'Catatonia'? 'Schizophrenia' (a double- album)? Or (Bob Geldof's suggestion) 'Paranoia'? Another psychological disorder, surely?
"Probably," reckons Joe. "It was a complete coincidence, the last two. 'Hysteria' was an idea Rick (Allen) came up with. It was after all the stuff with his accident. The first time we ever seriously experienced it was on the '83 tour, and it got pretty close to it two days after his accident - the reception area of the hospital was teeming with newspaper reporters and kids. And, because we weren't all that popular in England at the time, it made it appear more massive. Rick was on the front page of the Daily Star - and there were all these journalists, like Rick was The Queen or lan Botham. We had to be snuck in through the f***in' laundry chute to go and see him! "I always imagine that Fish - and I'm not knocking the guy - has everything worked out in advance: This is the album title, here's the sleeve - now let's go write the music. The last thing we have is the album title; we panic so much. "Hysteria' was going to be called 'Animal Instincts' at one stage: then we thought that sounded really stupid. We had the sleeve ready, so that was four grand down the drain. It just wasn't right - so we used it for the book instead."
Having repeated, even exceeded, the success of the hard-to-match 'Pyromania' album with 'Hysteria', Joe has found that the way to cope with sky-high expectations is to ignore them.
"I have no doubts about the next album," he declares. "I'm not 100 per cent sure that it'll be as big as the last one, though it may be a better record. Much of it is down to timing. I don't believe success should be based on sales. But everywhere you look it's figures, figures, figures.
"Success should be judged on the sound of the bloody thing. I'm not worried about it. We'll make a record and put it out, and it'll do whatever it does."
What about the live act? "We've had a few approaches from the States to go back and do some shows this summer. Believe it or not, 'Hysteria"s gone back up in America the album's doing better now than when we were out there. It's been 'Top Five in three different years - '87, 88 and now '89.
"Anyway, I was talking to Adam Clayton about it the other day, and he said, You've got to be careful because where do you go from stadiums? What do you do go back to clubs? "That's why we have managers. We have opinions, but we don't have our finger on the pulse like they do. We're too busy trying to sing in tune, play the songs and look cool like a pop band is supposed to do and still keep an eye open so you don't get ripped off. But you can't be a master of all trades.
"When does a spectacle become untoppable? It doesn't. You do a gig on the moon and put the PA on Pluto... Satellite gigs? Hologram gigs? Put the audience in the middle and us outside!"
ON TOUR, the Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses and Love And Rockets albums never left cassette deck. Back home, the Irish magazine Fresh has asked Joe for a fan's-eye view of the new releases.
"I played the Lou Reed album ten times and, in my opinion, it ain't 'Transformer', it ain't 'Sally Can't Dance', it's not 'Coney Island Baby' and it's definitely not 'Berlin'. Every song's about f***ing New York! All about some guy with needles in his arms! "But I grew up with 'Transformer', which came out when I was 12. And 'Berlin' was really depressing but great to listen to in the bath. The new one sounds like demos, which has a sort of charm, but some of it's a bit weird. That song, 'Last Great American Whale' I can't make my mind up whether it's a piece of shit or it's genius. He just talks it he makes Mark Knopfler sound like the guy out of Foreigner. Very strange."
Fine Young Cannibals' "The Raw And The Cooked' gets short shrift from Joe: "I'll never forgive them for slaughtering the Buzzcocks". As for Blondie's remix album, 'Once More Into The Bleach', it's "awful".
The new Supremes compilation is another matter: "F***ing brilliant," Joe raves. "To hear 'Nathan Jones' the way I remember it, not the way f***ing Bananarama slaughtered it. I got my first snog to that song, under the stairs at the Top Rank in Sheffield in 1971, Saturday morning youth club."
Joe advises me to check out The Hooters and The Quireboys; I recommend The Replacements - right up his street. But Joe (29) is of an age to get his real kicks from the stars of yesteryear.
"I've met Jagger at the studio. He was great he kept stealing our f***ing newspapers! Have you got the Daily Mirror? I want to do the crossword.
"Robert Plant came to see us in Chicago. He was great. When we played in the round we used to go on in laundry baskets. His tour manager bet him ten dollars he wouldn't push one out. So he put a hat on, pair of shades, stuffed his tour jacket full of jumpers to make him look fat, and pushed it out to the middle of the stage, right through the audience! "It's funny because he's a Leo as well, and Jagger. All frontmen are Leos," Joe muses. "Those detailed analyses of your star sign tell you things you often don't like to hear. 'Capable of being childish' - I suppose I am. 'Always has to be the centre of attention' well, when it suits me. "Sometimes I just like to bury myself, but that's what my gig is, that's what everybody wants: a big, loud, bloody... you know. "But Jagger's the best; he's got the lips of an elephant on the body of a dwarf. Brilliant. The ultimate frontmen are those you can caricature in cartoons - Jagger, Steve Tyler, Rod Stewart, Bowie, Townshend, Meat Loaf, Alice Cooper... You couldn't really draw me but it doesn't seem to have hindered our success.
"To be honest, once you're as big as we are and you don't have those sort of features, it's nice. I don't have to send the maid out to buy the News Of The World. I can walk down Oxford Street."
So what is the secret of Def Leppard's success?
"Most people in bands have got families, and maybe that's the reason we have the success we have: nobody's married or got kids," reasons Joe.
"I can't see Phil (Collen) starting a family when he hasn't even got a home. And I definitely have no desire to be a father.
"The only times I've ever thought about it have been provoked by TV documentaries like World In Action. I seriously think I would rather adopt an eight-year-old Brazilian kid and give it a real good start in life.
"There's enough kids without me bringing another one into the world. And to be quite honest, after my mumps I don't know if I can!
"I can miss out the nappy stage, which I'd detest. And I don't like the idea of a nanny bringing the kid up because you might as well not bother; you might as well buy one. "I don't want a kid; the band's too much of a bloody baby!"

16 Things You Never Knew About Talking Heads. Article from Making Music, August 1986.
David Byrne was born a Scot. He entered the world in Dunbarton on May 14, 1952. When he was two his father took the family to Canada to pursue his career as an electrical engineer.
Martina Weymouth and Chris Frantz share a military background. Tina's father was in the Navy, Frantz was raised as an army brat in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Byrne eventually chose the Rhode Island School of Design to study (where he met Frantz and Weymouth), principally because he "liked the graffiti".
'Psycho Killer' was written by Byrne in an experimental mood to see if he could pen a song with someone else's style. He was actually following Alice Cooper having just listened to 'Billion Dollar Babies'.
Frantz and Byrne first collaborated in a university band they called The Artistics (frequently dubbed The Autistics because of the high volumes they used). Weymouth was a fan.
One of Byrne's earlier bands had been a duo with friend Mark Kehoe. They called themselves Bizaldi. Byrne played violin and ukelele and they worked on Sinatra songs.
Chris Frantz's first instrument was trumpet. He swapped to trombone when he decided he couldn't supply the required wind power, and converted to drums.
When Tina Weymouth was 12 she used to be a member of Mrs Tuft's English Handbell Ringing Group touring American churches dressed in Elizabethan costumes and playing English folk songs and medieval melodies.
Adrian Belew was invited to join the Heads in early 1981. But they told him he could only play if he didn't use any effects.
Eno first met the band in the spring of 1977 when they were playing on a date with the Ramones during a British tour.
The name "Talking Heads" was taken from a TV guide in May 1975.
Jerry Harrison first rose to fame as a keyboard player for Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers.
Weymouth, Byrne and Frantz moved to New York looking for a bassist to complete their line up, expecting the city to be littered with them. After a depressing lack of success, Weymouth eventually bought a bass.
Lou Reed used to invite the band to his apartment, mainly, it would seem, to spend the first hour of every conversation insulting David Byrne.
Chris Frantz described the making of the "Speaking In Tongues" album as the easiest and most agreeable experience he'd ever had with Talking Heads.
Byrne picked up the phrase 'Burning Down The House' from an audience chant at a Parliament-Funkadelic concert.

Innersleeve Records, 2022
There was one more store on the list that I planned on going to. That was Innersleeve Records in Amagansett, located all the way out at the Eastern tip of Long Island. It’s the one trip I really had to prepare for. At 60 miles and 70 minutes to get there, Innersleeve- would be the furthermost locale of any stops I’d make this year. Out east is where the most scenic parts are - the farmland, the famed beaches, lighthouses, and resorts that partially define it and give Long Island its identity.
Innersleeve- was on the list of my last record-store victory tour (‘18). It was to be on my last stop between mid-July and the end of summer in the event that anyone could go with me, because I refused to go all by myself. So I asked all of my radio-station friends if they wanted to join but all I heard from them was deafening silence. I was also dealing with a personal collapse that rocked me like no other before it. Hence why I didn’t take the ride. But this year is a different one which didn’t deal me a bad river card or rolled snake eyes. Like the last, I had plenty of sizeable victories. I was finally going to give Innersleeve a chance I’ve been putting off, even if gas prices were at an all-time high.
It was the day I was going to head out there, a partially cloudy Thursday. I sat in front of the computer having a breakfast egg-bowl with bits of green peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, and bacon with a glass of orange juice. I popped in a cassette in the deck and let it run through to be digitized while auditioning my music finds for an upcoming radio show. I asked my friends on social media who visited Innersleeve- what they thought and told me it was a pretty good spot, but they also cautioned me that their prices were not cheap but reasonable. WUSB’s all-around good guy Evan told me that he nabbed some spaghetti western soundtracks and giallo for his mother-in-law. (Nice. I guess he was feeling Italian that day.) So, how ‘not cheap but reasonable’ are they, really? Why not visit their page and find out.
Here’s the daily record flip…oh, the fucking horror.
I saw the stickers on what they were selling and it didn’t look good for me. For example: a copy of Talk Talk’s The Party’s Over for $26.99. New records from Interpol, Soccer Mommy, Harry Styles, and King Diamond went for $25.00 to $35.00, some frightening more. Here’s an original pressing of Talking Heads’ '77 album going  for $40.00. The Doors R.S.D. (Record Store Day) sold for the same. A yellow vinyl version of The Smile’s A Light for Attracting Attention spun handsomely for $50.00.  Billion Dollar Babies by Alice Cooper was asking for a whopping $60.00. Wow, seriously? Marie Antoinette would tell me to fuck right off and go choke on a cake.
I’d assume that being they’re located in the trendy uptight part of Long Island, that their selection was pretty straight. I saw nothing but pop, rock, common reggae, all-too-familiar indie artists, American standard jazz greats, and Rock & Roll Hall-Of-Famers. Maybe the occasional Amyl & The Sniffers record? Nothing daring, challenging, or defying to throw in the face of the power-move-making status quo in an uppity part of - wait, nevermind - they carried a copy of GG Allin’s Brutality And Bloodshed For All. That’ll scare all the socialites, Seinfeld, and the rich and powerful back into their bank-account vault homes in no time, eh? I had a laugh for five seconds before I resumed hate-watching their stock. It seemed like they didn’t even attempt to care in hiding their price tags while flipping through their new arrivals.
I remember when I went to Plainview’s Vinyl Bay 777. I looked around and experiencing the freshly-built interior felt like finding a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. The excitement started to die slowly when I saw that all of their stock was priced three to four times what other stores were selling. They were big on condition and rarity. I only lasted 45 minutes before walking out with nothing and feeling ashamed of myself.
I’m more of quantity over quality. I can care less if the album in question is in tattered condition. As long as I have the physical product and can get it for less as possible then great. I can always stream it afterwards. I knew that -777 and Innersleeve were playing the vinyl revival game and were competing to see who can sell their stock for the highest price possible. They’ll have their case as to why they mark up their selection and even you’d agree it’d make sense. It doesn’t mean you’d want to go broke, and that’s if you were in my position.
That said, their selection didn’t excite me and reeling from sticker shock wasn’t helping, either. Along with the mania of high gas prices ($4.40 a gallon at the time of posting) and spending $893.00 in two days at Amityville’s High Fidelity, it wasn’t worth it. Instead, Innersleeve Records will be replaced by taking a ‘bonus’ trip to (Greenpoint) Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks. After that, I’ll declare my ‘22 Record Store Victory Tour over.
**********
TL;DR: Imagine if I was batting for the Yankees and I hit a zippy ground ball that rolled right to the Red Sox pitcher’s glove. He catches it right before I take my foot off the dirt and then throws it to his first baseman for the out. Now you know how I felt choosing to stay home instead of going to Innersleeve Records.
Innersleeve Records shopping list: no dice.

look at this cool red carpet event, look how incredible everyone looks in their designer gowns that will be worn once and then never see the light of day again. don’t pay attention to the minimum wage worker crying on the bus ride home because they couldn’t afford to keep their car.
look at these candid paparazzi shots with immaculately styled outfits and twenty grand on each of her ears. ignore the single mother who has to choose between feeding her baby or herself.
watch this cool new feminist anthem music video where everyone is wearing bikinis that cost a week’s rent, what a legendary girlboss icon. don’t mind the woman staying in her abusive relationship because she needs her partner’s income to survive.
read a forbes article about a singer who earned a billion dollars just from one tour. ignore the high schoolers who had to drop their music lessons because they couldn’t afford hobbies anymore.
watch a tiktok video of influencers spending hundreds of dollars on makeup they already hate. try to stop calculating how many bills you could have paid with that amount.
walk past a store bragging about being keeping things affordable while selling a bag of cheese for ten dollars. ignore your stomach growling because you couldn’t afford more than one meal today in the cost of living crisis.
listen to full-time podcast influencers explain that their stocks aren’t earning much this year for some odd reason, then they joke about needing to sell pictures of their feet while drinking from their twelfth stanley cup. try to pretend that you don’t know two people couch surfing after being kicked out of home for doing sex work to make ends meet.
aren’t you tired? aren’t we all just tired? can people really find that much enjoyment in watching the rich get richer while people keep dying because food’s too expensive to eat and rent isn’t affordable and medical bills are mainly paid by other poor people donating what they can to stranger’s gofundme pages?

Nita Strauss Says Pop Fans Don’t Gatekeep Like Rock + Metal Fans Do
Tumblr media
Let's talk about your new record, which is a mix of instrumentals and guest vocalists. What challenges you more as a composer in terms of dynamics and song structure — vocals or no vocals?
As far as what's challenging for me, the instrumental stuff comes really easily because instrumental music for a guitar player is almost like instrumental vomit — it comes out. You can write about anything that pops into your head.
There's no restrictions on song structure — it can be 15 minutes long, it can take 50 different turns. You're not going for radio, so you're not aiming for a certain time limit or thinking about a hook or a vocalist or what the key or cadence is or if their voice is going fit or what line is going to rhyme with the following line. There's so much you have to think about when you're writing a song with a vocalist.
So, for me, the instrumental stuff is infinitely easier, but I've gotten to the point where I enjoy them equally.
Let's talk about winner takes all your new single featuring Alice Cooper, the boss. How does that relationship change when your working roles are reversed? Alice was by far the easiest person to work with. Everybody we worked with on the artist side was a joy and incredible, but Alice in particular is so easy and he's such a pro. He treated me with total respect — the same way that I do when I'm playing his songs is how he approached my songs. It was amazing to get to work with him in this totally different capacity.
I wrote some music for his upcoming record and now he's on my upcoming record. It's this whole new dynamic to a relationship that's been going on successfully for so long, so it was great.
You're going be back on the road this year with Alice after touring with Demi Lovato. You've been in Alice's band for eight years and counting. When and how did you fully appropriate those classic Alice Cooper songs as your own? The key is to always maintain your own style as a guitar player, but to also always give reverence to the classic songs. There are plenty of songs in the Alice set that I can kind of go off, go nuts and Nita-fy it a little bit.
But when people are used to hearing "Billion Dollar Babies" the same way since it was released 50 years ago, you don't want to come in and reinvent the wheel. You don't want to disrespect the original songs and sort of disrespect the fans that are used to hearing it played a certain way. For those songs, I really do try to stick very close to the original and give the respect to the original recording. Nn the newer stuff or on the shred stuff, that's when I get to go a little more nuts.
So much has happened in the last year. Touring with Demi Lovato was an opportunity for heavy music and musicianship to cross-pollinate fan bases and genders. What have you noticed most in terms of changing outdated misperceptions? It was an amazing experience working with Demi. Obviously I come from the rock/hard rock/metal world and I am so used to fans being up in arms anytime something changes.
The cool thing that I found is that Demi changed her entire style. She changed her clothing, her musical style and she reworked all her huge hits. She has a song "Cool for the Summer" that has billions of Spotify plays and she did a full-on rock version with a little Metallica thrown in there for good measure. And the fans loved it. The fans supported her and absolutely screamed their faces off until the end of the show. There was no pushback. There was no, "This is not what you're supposed to sound like. This isn't what we signed up for. We want the old Demi back..." type gatekeeping that we see in the style of music that we're more used to.
It was beautiful to be a part of this evolution. Demi was so happy on the road. You can really tell this is where she wants to be as an artist and to get to be a part of that along with such a great band — an all female band, so many women on the crew (lighting director, production assistant, wardrobe, Demi's day-to-day manager) — there are so many women in high positions on that tour as well, which was so unique.
It being a largely sober tour was huge for me too. I've been sober a long time and being in that more healthy atmosphere and environment was really nice. It was a win all around.
I love the idea that these hard rock guitar players are associated with pop acts. Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt played with Rihanna and joined her at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
It's safe to say that hard rock has some of the best guitar players out there and I just love having that representation out there. We always feel like the underdogs in hard rock and metal. A rock guy playing at the Super Bowl is probably the closest thing we're going get to a real hard rock band playing there anyway.
In the fall Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie are touring together, joined by Ministry who have Monte Pittman (ex-Prong) and he's been playing with Madonna for years. There's so much representation now. Nuno is crushing it, even if I wish he would've gotten a solo at the Super Bowl. They could have cut a second of the pregnancy vibe and given Nuno a minute to shine.
Justin Derrico playing with Pink, Lari Basolio playing with Doja Cat... it's happening more and more. It's becoming more common and it's cool. Everybody complains all the time that there's not enough guitar in pop music and then they complain when guitar players get gigs in a more mainstream realm. I think it's a win for guitar playing all around with more people crossing over and doing these different gigs.
Not only do you perform, write and produce music, but you also teach people how to play it. What makes the fulfillment of teaching someone how to play an instrument different from anything else? It's kind of our job to pass on what we know at a certain point. Maybe I feel like that because my mom is a teacher and my dad, while not a teacher by trade, is like an educator. He is super knowledgeable and he taught me how to play.
There's a lot of young women wanting to learn how to play guitar. There's not any different way that I would teach a girl how to play guitar than a dude, but it's just important to have somebody that is relatable and easy to understand.
In my guitar course, Rock Guitar Fundamentals, I think we really landed on that. It's very easy to understand and very simple. It literally starts from, "This is a guitar, these are called strings, these are called frets, this is called a pickup and this is where you plug your guitar in," and that kind of stuff.
It goes all the way from easy through intermediate and an advanced level. If you start at the beginning and go all the way through, you will go from picking up the guitar for the first time to actually playing some pretty technical stuff.
What can you tell us about your upcoming plans? You got a lot going on for the rest of 2023. My solo record will come out in the summer, so I'm very excited about that. It's been a long time in the making with a lot of hurdles and a lot of things to learn about this process.
Before and after that, I'm very excited to get back out on the road with Alice Cooper. The new set looks incredible. I've been texting with the boys in the group chats all morning, just ironing out some parts and little things like that. It's something different than you've seen the last few years with Alice.

I was sat thinking about the people that we admired now I freely admit that I am from the baby boomer generation having been born in early 1953. Our heroes were either sportsmen or women or musicians (who were in the main men) although there were some great female singers as well, I could add a whole list here. But I’m talking about the great groups of the 60’s and 70’s. Whilst we witnessed the so called British Invasion sweep across America I felt somehow left out. I was too young for the Beatles their last live performance was 1966 excluding them playing on the top of the Apple Building in London. But then this was to me an example of how London centric music was becoming. In the same was too young for some of the early Rolling Stones as well playing in the cafes and clubs of London. I have since seen the Rolling Stones and they did not live up to the hype that surrounded them or was it that my expectations were to high and that I needed to lower them, because although they played some real turkeys their set at Glastonbury was excellent. The year following the best ever when Sir Paul McCartney played and anyone could see his love of playing the Beatles catalogue.
By the time the 70s had arrived I understood that the best music with a few exceptions was being made in America bands like Crosby Stills and Nash, the Grateful Dead and many others were coming into out minds and for the most part we had nothing to fight back with and whilst we have a thriving pop scene which we do, there is nothing to compare with the pulling power of Taylor Swift whose tour called Eras Tour grossed in excess of 2 billion dollars or Beyoncé Knowles whose last tour grossed many millions of dollars as well. We have some bands who do well but not on that scale, and I awaiting the gross figures for the upcoming Oasis tour, which will be lucrative. But I wonder whether it will be lucrative on the Taylor Swift scale.
