Fanart for fanfic again, because I sometimes, just can't help myself and need to sketch that stuff because mulling it over in my head just doesn't work out well. So, here you go, I even made it a book cover. 🙈

After reading I obviously had too much time on my hands was obsessed with the idea of infrared light (it feels warm on human skin, although we cannot perceive it with our limited optical array) in an all-dark environment. Did I think for a second trying to paint it? Maybe not. Monochromatic version is my favourite, but have all the other pretty colour versions because I go nowhere without a filter on.

Poseidon's design is neal-illustrator's.

“You don’t need to understand it, Little King,” the god of the tides seems almost amused now when he takes Odysseus’ hand to draw him closer, “but I suppose I should tell you if I don’t want you distracted by trying to figure out why I am willing to let you see the sun again.”

The thing in his chest expands whenever Poseidon is near, making it easier to draw breath, and so he doesn’t startle when the god comes to him even without a touch of light illuminating his presence. Instead, Odysseus turns into his touch without pause, guided by too many repetitions of a pretense at willing subjugation.

The gradual shift in his mind is a strange thing to watch; he can’t quite grasp how he can be drawn to Poseidon while simultaneously wanting to escape him, and wonders if a favored slave experiences the same kind of division within themselves as Odysseus does now.

Something inside his chest unlocks and for the first time in twenty years, he feels free to carry his emotions entirely open again. He doesn’t need to hide parts of himself to survive, he doesn’t need to hide parts of himself to lead. Still, the moment passes and the voices of servants, slaves, and citizens wash through his palace in a tide of awe and horror.

The waves whispering against the fine-grained sand are almost gentle enough to remind him of his youth, of a time when he did not fear the sea or its deity, but their hungry wandering, gnawing at the edges of his kingdom, doesn’t sound like the aimless force of the ocean he seems to remember; there is too much purpose in the water’s ever-encroaching line to deceive himself.
