Since my last horror recs post did so well, I thought I’d celebrate October’s beginning with another.
This time, we get a little sacrilegious. You know, for fun.

One scene stayed with de Chauliac forever, obsessing him, even though, mercifully, the rest would blur; he saw a devil with wide black wings gripped by two angels, who drove it down and seemed to speak in its ears as they fell; they hit the bend of the Rhône, sending up a great, illuminated plume of water visible from Orange. Two angels and a devil had tumbled into the water. Three angels came up. Forgiveness, then, was possible even for the worst.

Tell me about Between two fires
-🎄
HI SPRUCE
ok well Between Two Fires is a horror novel set in medieval France, specifically during the height of the plague. I've never read a historical fiction book that really dove into the plague and I really loved how the author didn't shy away from the brutal descriptions of how horrific it was. the setting is borderline apocalyptic with the characters constantly finding abandoned structures, dead bodies all over the place since no one is burying them anymore, and struggling to find food, since there's not enough people left alive to tend crops. so I found that aspect of it really really interesting
but the novel itself really shines with the characters and the horror elements. the story is about a former disgraced knight who ends up (reluctantly) becoming the protector of a 11-12ish year old orphan who is either a witch, a saint, or an angel in human form he's not exactly sure which. she sees angels and tells him he needs to take her across France for reasons she can't explain. these two have the classic 'grumpy older guy becomes the protector of a young girl who annoys the shit out of him and they get a found family arc out of it' trope going on and it's wonderful. the other main character that joins them on their journey is a priest who is dealing with a lot of his own inner struggles and is trying to tell himself he's still serving God even as he continuously falls weak to his vices and he's a wonderful character as well.
also, this is a horror novel and oh boy the horror element didn't disappoint. I haven't really read much horror before but I've heard people say the horror elements in this book are presented less like modern horror and closer to gothic horror, with really horrifying things just happening and everyone having to deal with it and move on with their journey. I really loved how the horror elements are described, the writing style is really interesting and distinct and the descriptions are beautiful. at first I went into this thinking the horror element would be more of a grounded, 'people are the real monsters' kind of thing and then very quickly I realized no we are dealing with some really fucked up monsters in this ok let's go.
so yeah uh. if you want a historical fiction medieval horror story with really well written flawed characters and a very sweet found family story that'll make you tear up at the end go read this book it's so good I loved it so much

Books that made me cry Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs by Camilla Townsend Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Feist Roses in the Mouth of a Lion by Bushra Rehman Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson
GoodRead links, ratings, quotes, and reasons under the cut.

"[Shield Flower] had to die as all do, knowing only that to posterity the fates would undoubtedly deal both blessings and trauma; she had to die as all do, hoping that those who came after her would demonstrate the same determination to be strong that she herself had shown."
Why did it make me cry? The themes of sacrifice, legacy, and survival. As a Mexican American who has struggled with identity in environments where assimilation was a matter of physical, social, and financial safety, there is a lot of pain tied to my cultural heritage. And shame.
Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman

Thomas looked at her standing with her delicate arms and legs and thought how odd it was that children were small, and that they found this normal. He could not remember being small. What must he look like to her, standing so far above her, holding that murderous hammer? What did it feel like to know you lived or died at the whim of the giants around you?
Why did it make me cry? The usual reasons when it comes to God and human suffering. The beauty of redemption.
Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Feist
Goodreads link | 💧💧💧💧 (4/5 tears)
"They instinctively knew the rules of crossing. They couldn’t look down or back. They couldn’t speak. They couldn’t run. And they couldn’t stop. To do any of those things would allow the thing below the bridge to come rushing up, to grab the boys and drag them back to its lair. The boys didn’t make the rules, they just knew them and abided by them."
Why did it make me cry? Feist transported me back to childhood, with its wonder and terrors. The focus on feelings of powerlessness and loss of agency during the darker moments resonated and shook something loose.
Roses in the Mouth of a Lion by Bushra Rehman

"I had a sudden irrational desire to hug her, but there was so much distance between us. My birth had been only the beginning of our separation, the first time I was cut loose. From that moment until now, I'd just been going farther and farther away, my body a lifeboat pushing into the ocean."
Why did it make me cry? I came out to my deeply religious parents this year. It was not disastrous but I also feel like nothing has changed. I still feel separate from them and struggle to reconcile these two versions of myself. Will I ever be able to be just one person?
Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson
Goodreads link | 💧💧💧💧 (4/5 tears)
"The beauty of a thing justified its plunder."
Why did it make me cry? The pain of the characters when they felt rejected, not supported, and not protected. Thinking about strained relationships between parents and siblings.

It will be harder for you to remember. Love is always harder. Love means weathering blows for another’s sake and not counting them. Love is loss of self, loss of other, and faith in the death of loss.
