Portrait of the FBI trainee as a young adult
or Some thoughts on how Riverdale aged up their teen protagonists
Jumping seven years in the future over the span of just seven days is not an easy feat, but it can certainly be done: changes in physical appearance and “adult” stories are very useful tools. But this is Riverdale, which means that, while all characters are adults in season 5, some characters are more adults than others.
Jughead Jones, Veronica Lodge and Toni Topaz, in particular, come to mind.
Adult Veronica has been blessed with a new sensational wardrobe befitting a more mature character. To be honest I’ve never met a 25-year-old dressed like Ronnie, however, her clothes are those of a grown up. Character-wise nothing has changed for adult Veronica. However, she had always been portrayed more like a young adult businesswoman than a typical teenager. So, in a way, post-time-jump Veronica hasn’t so much changed, as grown into her age. As a result, she might not be different from her pre-time-jump self, but she is convincing as an adult.
Toni had a similarly drastic change of wardrobe, accompanied by equally drastic changes in terms of her character: Toni is now pregnant but -most importantly- in a position of authority. She might not have her own story line yet as advertised (so far, she has supported the plots of Big Bad Hiram, Hero Archie, Investigator Betty and Isolation Queen Cheryl), however, in every scene she has been portrayed as someone dealing with adult responsibilities and being successful at that. She runs the Whyte Worm, she used to work at Riverdale Social Services, she’s Riverdale High School’s guidance counselor, she secures financing for the school and its activities, under her captaincy the Vixens have become a winning sports team heading out to championships. Adult Toni is drastically different from teen Toni.
The most adult character, however is Jughead. In terms of physical appearance, he has ditched his trademark beanie and very recognisable wardrobe for a new set of clothes, a couple of tattoos, glasses and facial hair (that some love and some hate). In terms of story lines, like Toni, he has the most adult ones. And the most different ones from those of his youth. He has meetings with his agent where he talks about his job. He no longer investigates to unravel Riverdale’s mysteries as much as he interviews people for a book, for which he already has a contract and a deadline. He takes a second job to make ends meet. He faces debt. He (supposedly) drinks a lot. As a teacher, his storyline has been the most realistic of them all. Instead of condoning dance-offs with 25-year-old Cheryl or being given a class of minions like Veronica (wasn’t that a very taciturn and obedient bunch …), Jughead is shown staying out late to prep for class and giving pop quizzes to students who are actually unprepared/bored/rude. Mobster-like debt collectors and alcoholism aside, his “adultness” is the most relatable and the most easily recognized as such.
And then, there’s Betty … Who, apart from her longer hair, has been given a mixed wardrobe of 1. new adult capri pants and heels, 2. her old high school combo of sweaters and collars (that she often wears when she investigates – which makes for quite the visual throwback to her high school sleuthing years) and 3. an FBI jacket than makes her look even younger than when she was blackmailing Donna back in the day. Betty’s natural make-up makes her look especially young. (Hadn’t Lili commented once upon a time about how they had gradually darkened Betty’s make up in s2 or 3?) In terms of characterisation, unlike Toni and Jughead, and much like Veronica, Betty is given the exact same material: in her case that’s: “investigating sleuth usually barging into places demanding answers”. Unlike Veronica, however, Betty has not grown into her role, because from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Nancy Drew, the teenager-badass-investigator-played-by-an-older-actress has been an effing trope, and, so far, the writers have failed in differentiating between 18-year-old Betty and 25-year-old Betty in terms of dialogue, set ups, story lines, agency. In other words, FBI trainee Elizabeth Cooper lacks adult gravitas.
Disclaimer #1: this is in no shape or form a diss on the actress, whom I like a lot. This is a diss on the writers, who didn’t bother to update an extremely tropey character, when they updated her on-screen age.
Disclaimer #2: neither is this a diss on the actor playing Jughead, whom I also like a lot. Just because he’s getting better material, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t put in the work: from suggesting the glasses to Jughead’s fed-up, weary, disbelieving or conspiracy-excited new mannerisms.
Then there’s also the matter of how Veronica, Archie and Jughead, all have regular partners for their post-time-jump story lines, whereas Betty has been given the short end of the scene partners stick.
>> Veronica’s foe is daddykins/Chad (who is, anyway, just another version of daddykins).
>> Archie’s story is Archie & his posse against the world. His partners even dress alike to reinforce the idea that they act as one unit! In 5x5 it is Archie and his posse of similarly leather-clad friends against the Ghoulies. In 5x6 it is Archie and his wannabe Bulldog students against the illusive football funding. In 5x7 it is Archie and his similarly dressed merry band of volunteer firefighters against the blazing inferno that is Riverdale.
>>Jughead shares half his scenes with the same new, exciting and extremely likable Tabitha Tate.
>> Betty’s scene partners, however, are seemingly whoever is available at the moment. Polly. Alice. Kevin. Archie if naked. Glen. A trucker. Dr Curdle Jr, A victim’s mother. Reggie. None of them stands out. As this is Riverdale, it’s hard to tell if this is bad writing (focusing on other characters and letting, for some reason, Betty fend for herself, counting on her popularity to maintain the viewers’ interest) or a conscious choice to portray her as being isolated. If, however, it’s the latter, it does the character no favours at all. Jughead’s also isolated, but his plot is new and exciting. In Betty’s case, 1. we’ve already watched the story of her searching for her missing sister when she was a sophomore and 2. I don’t particularly care about any of her scene partners, who are either secondary characters or people we’re not going to see ever again! And this makes her storyline, for lack of a better word: boring (or, in naked Justin Gingerlake’s case, extremely annoying).
I’m absolutely elated to see Betty investigate with Jughead, not only because this will eventually lead to Bughead, but also for the possibility that her mystery plot line will finally become more engaging. That’s not a very nice thought to have for your favourite female character. That’s not a very nice way to treat your most popular female character, especially when you have previously “gifted” her with a cheating story line and the least popular ship (yes, barchie, that’s you).
5x7 came and went and I’m still waiting to see what’s new about Betty Cooper and her storyline. (This is true about Veronica and Archie too, however, this is a bughead blog, so Jughead and Betty take priority! – and, also, let’s be honest, I never cared much about Archie.)
I do not appreciate that FBI trainee Cooper is written exactly the same way as teenager sleuth Betty. Why affiliate her to the FBI if you’re not going to give the character real authority? I do not appreciate the writing choices that make 5x5-5x7 Betty’s plot boring. Why come down so hard on your show’s most popular female character? I love Betty Cooper, both with Jughead and on her own. Likewise, I love Jughead both as part of bughead and on his own. Adult Jughead definitely has my attention. So, when may I have my interesting adult badass female character back?

The Hidden Truth: 1.4 The Achilles Heel (6th August 1964); written by Paul Lee; dir. Michael Currer-Briggs. Featuring regulars Alexander Knox, James Maxwell, Elizabeth Weaver, Zia Mohyeddin & Ruth Meyers. Guest starring Gerald Rowland, Vanda Godsell & Loretta Parry.
Dr Ruth Coliton (Elizabeth Weaver), head of the serology department (dealing with blood grouping and stains) tries to find the cause of the mystery illness of a boy, David Cleaves (Gerald Rowland). Her efforts lead her to defy hospital convention...
The episode also must have allowed a glimpse into the more personal side of Bridget Webster, the Professor’s efficient secretary, as it features young Janey Webster (played by Loretta Parry, another child actor), [presumably her daughter - first episode write-ups include the detail that she has a child.]
Vanda Godsell guested as Betty Cleaves (the boy’s mother?) while Douglas Blackwell was Dr. Matthews, Peggy Aitchison Mrs Waite and Zeph Gladstone and Jane Evers as a nurse and lab assistant.
David Rowland, playing the ailing David Cleaves had previously played the lead in ITV children’s serial Badger’s Band [sic], according to the Daily Mirror, but since Gerald Rowland wasn’t in Badger’s Bend (Rediffusion 1963-64), they presumably meant The Barnstormers, in which he played Rusty (one of the lead characters) - another lost series recently recovered & currently being broadcast by Talking Pictures. Producer Stella Richman re-used Gerald in her next series, Blackmail, in 1966.
Zeph Gladstone, playing a nurse at St Jude’s, would also play the same role in the now (mostly) extant “Sweets to the Sweet,” as with several other actors, giving a sense of continuity to episodes set in the Department’s London base.

Seventeen (Peter Parker's iPod, Part 12.)
Description: Blip was hard. Dating MJ was a pleasure in Parker’s life, so it was even harder when she told him that things aren’t working as she anticipated - one month before college. Although they remained friends. But Peter isn’t too sure if he can handle liking yet another girl.
Part Summary: Sometimes, you felt like disappearing from the surface of the Earth. And Peter seemed to be the best candidate to get lost with you that weekend.
Word count: 3.4 K
Tagging: @fanboyswhereare-you, @lukesbabylon, @eridanuswave
Master list: H E R E
"So..." - You started during the lunch pause. MJ and Betty went to see the university chorus in action and Ned had a lecture from psychology class. You were alone and for you, it was finally the right time to ask him. - "I have plans for this weekend. Like... I wanna something in the style of disappearing from the surface of the Earth."
Peter looked at you with his eyebrows risen as he chewed on his sweet potatoes. He nodded and motioned you to continue.
"So I plan to visit home. Granny and paps have this big farm with tons of animals, a lot of people in it, it's just a house in the middle of the woods. I'd drive out of here on Friday morning and come back on Sunday night." - You depicted, so Peter would have at least a picture in his head.
"That sounds great. An ideal place to relax. Good for you. What would I do to have a place like that, you don't even know." - The boy sighed dreamily but looked at you with his eyes wide open once you smiled happily. - "What? What is it?" - He nudged your shoulder multiple times and after the tenth try, you finally gave in.
"I'm glad you agree to go there with me. You'll love it." - You exclaimed joyfully, biting your lip as you smiled. Only after that, you stole another fry from his plate. But his reaction wasn't looking as you thought it would - you hoped that Peter would give in easily.
"I... Y/N... I... No. I can't." - Peter stuttered out with his cheeks having the most intense red color you've ever seen on anyone. - "I mean... It sounds nice, or at least I-I guess. I mean... I don't wanna... You know. Being there just as someone extra." - He exhaled out loud. He already knew that you're going to have a prolonged relaxing weekend, you had already told Spider-Man. But you haven't told him you're taking Peter with you.
"And what about... About MJ, Ned, and Betty... What would they think?" - He got out of his mouth, still watching your face. For a moment, you seemed to be taken away, but then you started to laugh loudly.
"Why would I care about what they're thinking? I mean... Yeah, sure, we're best friends, but, Peter, you're my best friend too. And MJ knows I date someone. It's nothing more than a prolonged weekend spent with your best friend." - You calmed him down, but he stood up and frowned a bit.
That was what took the excitement out of you; you immediately furrowed too and took a short breath. Was this a dumb idea? To ask Peter? Maybe you should ask MJ or Ned. But you wanted Peter to have some different, happier, and more relaxed thoughts than he had in the last few weeks.
You just wanted that happy boy to crawl out of that sad, sad Peter. But now he was rushing out of the cafeteria. - "I'm grateful for all of this... But I have my responsibilities and I can't leave May alone in here. I'm so, so, so sorry, Y/N." - Peter got out of himself before he took the tray with his food and ran away out of your reach.
You weren't losing any hope, though. It was only Wednesday. And since you had enough time to persuade Peter, you knew that he will be going in the end. Randomly, you sent Peter pictures of the surroundings of your grandparents' farm, sometimes you just asked him out of blue during your common classes.
Until you texted him just minutes before it was ten minutes before Thursday midnight, he was sure he won't go - but at that moment, something broke inside of him.
Are you in, Parker? It's your last chance.
At that moment, he was laying on his bed, with his hand under his head. He came home from visiting you just an hour ago. That was maybe what sold him to that idea the most, having you as close as he did in your bed, getting high on your scent and jokes.
You were texting him two days non-stop, making him unable to stop thinking about the trip. You were asking him all the time at school, your gazes were giving him the same question over and over again. Maybe he wasn't an extra as he thought the whole time. Maybe you wanted him there with you. Maybe it was a good thing to do - he desperately needed to relax. He needed to take a break from the school, from MJ blackmailing him, he needed to take a breath with feeling that Spider-Man pressure on his back.
Just a few minutes later, he called Happy and asked him if something like that is even acceptable - to leave New York for the whole weekend. To be honest, Happy wasn't exactly enthusiastic, yet the boy needed to have some time to put himself back together. The last text he sent you before going to sleep was I'm in. After that, the chat went completely silent for the night. But you were smiling for a long time after that, looking into the ceiling, feeling great. For some reason, you were too excited about having Peter for three days. Only for yourself. That was like a dream.
The other morning, you picked him up in an old Chevy you borrowed from Betty's parents and to get every piece of his stuff onto the trunk. Earlier that morning, Peter had already gotten some very angry texts from MJ - she realized quite quickly that you two ran away from your responsibilities for a few days.
Peter only begged her not to go on a rage storm of texting you and calling you - he wanted to prolong the happiness for a few days and to tell you once a good moment comes by. Now, he just wanted to be a bit longer by your side.
And the several hours lasting road trip was really fun. You stopped here and there for a coffee or a good looking cheeseburger. In the middle of your trip, you managed to visit the third biggest ball made from rubber bands in the USA. You felt really happy with him. You felt safe. You knew he had your back all the time, there were a lot of photos and meme templates made only on the trip alone, a lot of singing along to some pop songs.
And boy oh boy, the biggest fun came when Peter was about to meet your granny and your grandpa along with the rest of your quite big family. Peter bought, for an unknown reason, a huge flower and an enormous set of teacups - you had to bring on the way. Peter was rather persistent.
"Oh, my dear, hello, hello!" - Your granny cried out once you entered in. She was in a wheelchair for a pretty long time now. It was three years since your aunties Patty and Terry, your great gay aunties with their younger children, moved in after the whole Thanos thing happened. They were taking care of the farm now since it was huge and full of children and animals. - "I haven't seen you for such a long time. You're so big now!" - She said happily and smoother your face with her shaky fingers.
"And this young man? Who is he? Your boyfriend?" - Auntie Terry came there from the living room, giving you a smooch. Peter's eyes widened, gulped, and looked around. He was seriously scared out of his damn mind.
"No. That's my best friend Pete. I told this gorgeous lady he'll come by and she was quite excited." - You smiled and hugged granny from the back again.
"Yea. Yea, I'm Peter... And... I'm pretty nervous, hi." - Peter smiled and looked around. Then he quickly picked up the flower and kneeled in front of your granny. Gently, he put the flower on her knees. - "And this is for you, gorgeous lady." - Peter smiled nervously. Both you and Terry opened up your lips while laughing. Jesus, that boy was too sweet for the world. Even if it might seem to be bold, it was rather sweet.
"Don't you try to hit on my lady, young man." - Your grandpa made his way to you too and you, being the loving granddaughter, immediately ran to him for a hug.
The first dinner with Peter around at your home was great. Auntie Patty and her daughter Sierra prepared the dinner with your help while Peter was having fun with the kids, your cousins, nephews, and nieces. They were showing him all kinds of stuff - from your vegetables to your animals, making sure that Peter isn't bored or not occupied the whole time. By the looks of it, he was pretty good with kids. You loved seeing him play, run around, yell and laugh with them. And Sierra sure noticed the small smile appearing on your lips slowly.
"So, are you sure he's not your college boyfriend?" - She asked quietly and looked at Peter just rising small James from the ground, carrying him around while Ada and Nat, your small cousins, were running after them.
"Yea. I'm sure. Peter's... Lovely. He's a great friend, but I have a different boyfriend back in New York." - You sighed dreamily, still smiling at the sight. Peter was great. The greatest. But Speedy... Yeah, he was still there. Especially after what happened back in your bed.
"Maybe she's using the same tactics I and Terry used in the sixties." - Patty smiled from doing the potatoes, making you both look at her. - "Terry used to say that she has a husband and that I am her cousin. What if Peter's not only a friend, hm?"
"And granny Tammy already likes him. The gesture with the flower was great, she was all over the heels... And she's eighty" - Your auntie said with laugher. You shook your head and looked away shyly. And the dinner was just the best. Peter with his shy behavior was a great addition to your family time - everyone was so loud, happy, laughing, having the time of the day. Slowly, even Peter with his nervousness felt right at place. Your family might have been one of the loudest groups of people you've known, but they were loving and caring people. That could be felt.
The other day, you've woken up insanely early - waking Peter up as well. He didn't know what was going on at all. But when he saw you dressed up in hiking gear, he knew that you're going to show him around. It was great fun. You got lost in the woods early in the morning, packing yourself lunch made by your aunties and a large water bottle. You were leading him through the woods, higher and higher to the mountains, showing him lookouts, telling him a lot of embarrassing stories... It was cool.
Peter felt like you two would be a great couple. At least, it felt like you already were one. All those cute selfies that were taken, Peter carrying you on the roads on his back, making you laugh with his bullshit, telling each other some embarrassing jokes and stories. And around midday, you've reached the destination. It was a small pond in the middle of huge rocks, in the middle of nowhere. The water must've been warm since there was a lot of mist coming from it.
"Let's get in." - You exclaimed, putting your stuff on the ground, untying your shoes. You were undressing, which made Peter turn around and redden. He was kinda used to feel your naked body pressed into his, but... He never saw how did you look like under your clothes.
"Like here? Together? Now?" - Peter asked and his cheeks started to redden even more. It was the sound of you undoing the button on your jeans quickly. For a moment, you furrowed before nodding; then you nodded and pulled your trousers down, jumping in. With a loud yell, you resurfaced again, having your t-shirt soaking wet. You looked very happy at that moment.
"Your turn. Come on." - You smiled and reached your hand out to him, pulling him down with you. You were used to him being strong and not moving an inch when you pulled his down, but Peter just fell into the pond after you. He didn't even take his shoes off, so even these were wet as hell. You laughed when you both resurfaced again and you put your elbows on his shoulders. Peter was lost in the moment; you were pressed on him, laughing, soaking wet and... Happy.
You were happy. He almost made himself put his hands on your hips, looking you in the eyes, but just as he encouraged himself, you swam away and went to play some music.
"There's no signal out here, so nobody will find us until we want them to." - You said courageously, turning an old radio you brought with you. It was some pop song, so you let it play, diving back in. Peter took his shoes and trousers in the meantime, putting them aside so it could dry off before you go back to the farm.
The water was nicely warm; not too cold or too hot. He wondered how you found that spot as he dove back in, but you jumped back in too, talking on your own. - "I found this spot after the New York attack happened. I was... Lethargic and sad, depressed - so I was taking all-day lasting hikes around the farm because everyone out there was reminding me of mom and dad all the time, they had a funeral just a week before I moved to my granny's. That's how I found it here. Nobody except you ever saw this spot." - You smiled, merging with the water. It was looking like the water was rising your knees and breast and you just looked in front of yourself - watching the sky and trees around.
"Your parents died? You haven't told me that... You haven't told anyone." - Peter whispered, doing the same thing. It didn't take a long time until the backs of your head bumped into each other, but neither of you moved from the position. You were quiet for a long time, listening to the wind and water flowing in and out, along with the song.
"It hurts to talk about them. Or to think about them. That's why." - You answered quietly and you didn't believe that Peter had heard any of what you've said - the underwater cracking was too loud. - "And you haven't told me the story about you and May either. We're even."
"I barely remember mom and dad." - Peter answered after a while, making you surprised. You didn't have any idea that he would tell you this. But there you both were. - "May has been by my side since I was a little boy. But uncle Ben... He was amazing. I loved him. Aunt May and Ben... They aren't only aunt and uncle. They were the only parent figures I ever realized I had. He got shot when I was fourteen. It was kinda crazy at that time of my life... But I miss him, man. I really miss him." - Peter finished, still feeling the back of his head on yours.
Fourteen. He was only fourteen when Ben had died. You believed Peter that it was really crazy around that time - which rose the first red flag for you. Spider-Man somehow popped up in your head. The second date. He told you his father figure had died. You almost stood up and asked Peter, but you didn't move an inch in the end.
"Tell about your deepest, darkest secret." - You whispered, closing your eyes. Peter was quiet for a long time, thinking that maybe this was the chance. You both were practically half-naked, you couldn't see each other, but then, he shut down again.
"I don't have this kind of a secret. I'm a good, young lad." - Peter stood up and looked at you. You've done the same thing, rolling your eyes. - "I will tell you mine if you promise not to tell anyone. Okay?" - You asked and played with the water between your fingers. Peter nodded. He expected some Spider-Man related bullshit, but you surprised him.
"I once saw MJ kissing Betty. And if you were a terrible kisser according to her, she should stay quiet." - You whispered, making him laugh. Peter stiffened when you sloshed some water his way, which started a huge water fight full of laughter and happy screaming.
You were back at the farm long after it got dark - but you both knew that your day isn't ending yet. You took Peter to your room in a big attic. It was spacious and pretty girly - it had a big wardrobe and a bigger bookcase, you gad a gramophone there along with some types of vinyl - but any of your vinyl was old. You had VIDEOCLUB, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, and many more. You spent the whole evening just chilling there, going through your old photos - you already saw his, but your photos were even more crying.
It wouldn't be Peter if he hadn't taken a photo or the worst ones, letting you know that hell meme them as soon as you get to New York. It was almost three in the morning when you opened him the stairs down while listening to Sharon Van Etter's song.
"See you tomorrow?" - Peter asked with a dumb smile, stepping onto the first step. You nodded dramatically, waiting under the ladder.
"I guess so. I'm the driver, so, that's kinda how you'd know it's me." - You nodded happily, making him chuckle as well. He nodded, stepping aside so you could crawl back up. But you didn't. Instead, you got stuck for a while, watching Peter smiling at you. When he told you good night, you just grabbed him. You just went for it while listening to the chorus.
"I used to be free, I used to be seventeen. Follow my shadow, around your corner. I used to be seventeen - now you're just like me." - You heard pretty loudly when you kissed him out of the blue. You hadn't got any idea what has gotten into you, but it freaked you out. Yet, Peter smelled, tasted, and felt familiar. You knew that gentle, warm skin... And those lips... You knew them. While he kept his eyes closed, you noticed the similarities. You had put your hands on his waist, he had his palms gently around your neck. It felt so much... Too much like Speedy.
You rose your palm and gently put your thumb on his lower lip. You had an expression which could be described as full of realization. It was a strong suspicion, but you kinda trusted your instincts. You stepped aside and crawled the ladder stairs before his voice stopped you again. Peter was s blushing like a girl and... You ever saw anyone happier than him before.
"Y/N, I... I... I am..." - He was stuttering, clearly trying to say something. Your eyes were hanging on his lips, waiting for these three words. I am Spider-Man. He just needed to say that - yeah, you would be angry probably, you wouldn't be able to understand why... But you would get over it somehow. You liked both Peter and Spidey unintentionally, realizing just at the moment and if Peter would just tell you or give you a clue, you would somehow connect these two universes. There were evidence and strong similarities. - "I'm really glad I came here with you, Y/N." - Peter said and his smile widened.
You nodded and told him that you're glad he came as well. But when you pulled the ladder up, you only thought about Peter being Spidey - and if Peter wasn't your Speedy, you hoped that this sudden impulse didn't give Peter a false hope of having a relationship with you - because until Spidey would leave you, you wouldn't date anyone else.

Leonard Joseph "Chico" Marx (March 22, 1887 – October 11, 1961) was an American comedian, musician, actor and film star. He was a member of the Marx Brothers (with Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, and Zeppo Marx). His persona in the act was that of a charming, uneducated but crafty con artist, seemingly of rural Italian origin, who wore shabby clothes and sported a curly-haired wig and Tyrolean hat. On screen, Chico is often in alliance with Harpo, usually as partners in crime, and is also frequently seen trying to con or outfox Groucho. Leonard was the oldest of the Marx Brothers to live past early childhood (first-born Manfred Marx had died in infancy). In addition to his work as a performer, he played an important role in the management and development of the act in its early years.
Chico was born in Manhattan, New York City, on March 22, 1887. His parents were Sam Marx (called "Frenchie" throughout his life), and his wife, Minnie Schoenberg Marx. Minnie's brother was Al Shean. The Marx family was Franco-German Jewish. His father was a native of Alsace who worked as a tailor and his mother was from East Frisia in Germany.
Billing himself as Chico, he used an Italian persona for his onstage character; stereotyped ethnic characters were common with vaudevillians. His non-Italian-ness was specifically referred to twice on film. In their second feature, Animal Crackers, he recognizes someone he knows to be a fish peddler impersonating a respected art collector:
Ravelli (Chico): "How is it you got to be Roscoe W. Chandler?"
Chandler: "Say, how did you get to be an Italian?"
Ravelli: "Never mind—whose confession is this?"
In A Night at the Opera, which begins in Italy, his character, Fiorello, claims not to be Italian, eliciting a surprised look from Groucho:
Driftwood (Groucho): "Well, things seem to be getting better around the country."
Fiorello (Chico): "I don't know, I'm a stranger here myself."
A scene in the film Go West, in which Chico attempts to placate an Indian chief of whom Groucho has run afoul, has a line that plays a bit on Chico's lack of Italian nationality, but is more or less proper Marxian wordplay:
S. Quentin Quayle (Groucho): "Can you talk Indian?"
Joe Panello (Chico): "I was born in Indianapolis!"
There are moments, however, where Chico's characters appear to be genuinely Italian; examples include the film The Big Store, in which his character Ravelli runs into an old friend he worked with in Naples (after a brief misunderstanding due to his accent), the film Monkey Business, in which Chico claims his grandfather sailed with Christopher Columbus, and their very first outing The Cocoanuts, where Mr. Hammer (Groucho) asks him if he knew what an auction was, in which he responds "I come from Italy on the Atlantic Auction!" Chico's character is often assumed to be dim-witted, as he frequently misunderstands words spoken by other characters (particularly Groucho). However, he often gets the better of the same characters by extorting money from them, either by con or blackmail; again, Groucho is his most frequent target.
Chico was a talented pianist. He originally started playing with only his right hand and fake playing with his left, as his teacher did so herself. Chico eventually acquired a better teacher and learned to play the piano correctly. As a young boy, he gained jobs playing piano to earn money for the Marx family. Sometimes Chico even worked playing in two places at the same time. He would acquire the first job with his piano-playing skills, work for a few nights, and then substitute Harpo on one of the jobs. (During their boyhood, Chico and Harpo looked so much alike that they were often mistaken for each other.)
In the brothers' last film, Love Happy, Chico plays a piano and violin duet with 'Mr. Lyons' (Leon Belasco). Lyons plays some ornate riffs on the violin; Chico comments, "Look-a, Mister Lyons, I know you wanna make a good impression, but please don't-a play better than me!"
In a record album about the Marx Brothers, narrator Gary Owens stated that "although Chico's technique was limited, his repertoire was not." The opposite was true of Harpo, who reportedly could play only two tunes on the piano, which typically thwarted Chico's scam and resulted in both brothers being fired.
Groucho Marx once said that Chico never practiced the pieces he played. Instead, before performances he soaked his fingers in hot water. He was known for 'shooting' the keys of the piano. He played passages with his thumb up and index finger straight, like a gun, as part of the act. Other examples of his keyboard flamboyance are found in A Night at the Opera (1935), where he plays the piano for a group of delighted children, and A Night in Casablanca (1946), where he performs a rendition of "The Beer Barrel Polka".
Chico became the unofficial manager of the Marx Brothers after their mother, Minnie, died in 1929. As manager, he cut a deal to get the brothers a percentage of a film's gross receipts—the first of its kind in Hollywood. Furthermore, it was Chico's connection with Irving Thalberg of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer that led to Thalberg's signing the Brothers when they were in a career slump after Duck Soup (1933), the last of their films for Paramount.
For a while in the 1930s and 1940s, Chico led a big band. Singer Mel Tormé began his professional career singing with the Chico Marx Orchestra. Through the 1950s, Chico occasionally appeared on a variety of television anthology shows and some television commercials, most memorably with Harpo in "The Incredible Jewelry Robbery", a pantomime episode of General Electric Theater in 1959.
His nickname (acquired during a card game in Chicago in 1915) was originally spelled Chicko. It was changed to Chico but still pronounced "Chick-oh" although those who were unaware of its origin tended to pronounce it "Cheek-oh". Numerous radio recordings from the 1940s exist where announcers and fellow actors mispronounce the nickname, but Chico apparently felt it was unnecessary to correct them. As late as the 1950s, Groucho was happy to use the wrong pronunciation for comedic effect. A guest on You Bet Your Life told the quizmaster she grew up around Chico (California) and Groucho responded, "I grew up around Chico myself. You aren't Gummo, are you?" Groucho is heard in videos pronouncing it "Chicko", as in a Dick Cavett episode with Groucho talking to Dan Rowan.
During Groucho's live performance at Carnegie Hall in 1972, he states that his brother got the name Chico because he was a "chicken-chaser" (early 20th century slang for womanizer).
As well as being a compulsive womanizer, Chico had a lifelong gambling habit. His favorite gambling pursuits were card games, horse racing, dog racing, and various sports betting. His addiction cost him millions of dollars by his own account. When an interviewer in the late 1930s asked him how much money he had lost from gambling, he answered, "Find out how much money Harpo's got. That's how much I've lost." Gummo Marx, in an interview years after Chico's death, said: "Chico's favorite people were actors who gambled, producers who gambled, and women who screwed." Referring to Chico's love life, George Jessel quipped, "Chico didn't button his fly until he was seventy."
Chico's lifelong gambling addiction compelled him to continue in show business long after his brothers had retired in comfort from their Hollywood income, and in the early 1940s he found himself playing in the same small, cheap halls in which he had begun his career 30 years earlier. The Marx Brothers' penultimate film, A Night in Casablanca (1946), was made for Chico's benefit since he had filed for bankruptcy a few years prior. Because of his out-of-control gambling, the brothers finally took the money as he earned it and put him on an allowance, on which he stayed until his death.
Chico had a reputation as a world-class pinochle player, a game he and Harpo learned from their father. Groucho said Chico would throw away good cards (with the knowledge of spectators) to make the play "more interesting". Chico's last public appearance was in 1960, playing cards on the television show Championship Bridge. He and his partner lost the game.
Chico was married twice. His first marriage was to Betty Karp in 1917. Their union produced one daughter named Maxine (1918–2009). His first marriage was plagued by his infidelity, ending in divorce in 1940; he was very close to his daughter Maxine and gave her acting lessons.
Chico's second marriage was to Mary De Vithas. They married in 1958, three years before his death.
In the 1974 Academy Awards telecast, Jack Lemmon presented Groucho with an honorary Academy Award to a standing ovation. The award was also for Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo, whom Lemmon mentioned by name. It was one of Groucho's final major public appearances. "I wish that Harpo and Chico could be here to share with me this great honor," he said, naming the two deceased brothers (Zeppo was still alive at the time and in the audience). Groucho also praised the late Margaret Dumont as a great straight woman who never understood any of his jokes.
Chico died of arteriosclerosis at age 74 on October 11, 1961, at his Hollywood home. He was the eldest brother and the first to die.
Chico is entombed in the mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California. Chico's younger brother Gummo is in a crypt across the hall from him.

72 for dialog prompts! Bughead. :) and thank you!
72. “Do you ever think if people heard our conversations they’d lock us up?”
“What’s on your mind, Betts?”
Jughead’s voice draws her out of her daydreaming, or whatever it is you call it when you’re working the late shift in a near-empty diner on a humid summer night and your mind wanders. Betty stretches her arms across the counter between them, the sleeves of her Pop’s uniform pulling tight against her shoulders, and gives him a half-smile.
“Oh, this and that.” She nudges the edge of his coffee mug with her knuckle. “You need a refill?”
“Nah.” Shoulders hunched, he leans towards her. “It’s completely dead in here. Are you even making any money working all these nights?”
“Some.” A quick glance around the diner confirms that they’re the only two souls in the place, but she lowers her voice anyway. “Not enough to pay off Curdle Jr. for the autopsy records.”
The news that Chas “Chic” Murphy – as it turned out was his real name – had been found dead in his prison cell last week hadn’t exactly come as a surprise. He’d already cheated death once, and gone on to do more terrible things; if anything, his demise was not only inevitable, but long overdue.
Even so, she hadn’t trusted the official report that he’d taken his own life. If there was even a slight possibility that there could be foul play afoot, she needed to know about it. Enter their old pal, Dr. Curdle Jr.
As it turned out, though, his rates had increased: a string of deaths at the new prison had spurred the county supervisor to begin keeping a closer eye on the morgue these days. And with Alice Cooper still on the lam with Edgar Evernever and his ragtag band of Farmies, Betty’s discretionary funds had pretty much dried up by the end of the school year.
Hence, the Pop’s uniform; hence, Jughead’s newly-formed habit of stopping in for a (gratis) cup of coffee most nights after his own closing shift wraps up at the Bijou.
His hand catches hers as she reaches for his empty mug. “You know I’ll pay for it. Just say the word.”
Betty shakes her head. “It’s my problem, Jug, not yours.”
They’ve had the argument before, and he chooses – wisely, she thinks – not to get into it this time. “Why does Veronica keep giving you such crummy shifts, anyway? Doesn’t she make the schedule?”
“They’re not all bad. And she can’t look like she’s playing favorites. It’s supposed to be based off of seniority.”
It’s more or less the truth, though Betty knows that if she so much as winked at Veronica, her best friend would give her all the good shifts in an instant.
She just…doesn’t really want them. It’s easier to muster up a fake smile for only a table or two. It’s easier to scan the room and feel confident there’s no one watching her when there are a mere handful of patrons instead of a bustling lunch crowd.
It’s easier to crawl into bed at 3 or 4 in the morning, when Jughead is already there, snoring lightly, instead of laying awake at night wondering when he’ll come home from the movie theater, or whether someone else will slip into the room they’re now sharing before he does, smother the breath out of her with a pillow, slit her throat.
(Penelope Blossom disappeared after that night in the woods, leaving not a trace behind. Betty doesn’t think murder via straight-up physical violence is really her style.
But she also hadn’t thought that Penelope was the mastermind behind the entire Gargoyle King debacle, so.)
“You could just blackmail her.” His mouth curls into a smirk as he swirls the last dregs of coffee around in the bottom of his cup. “She’s still got all that jingle jangle hidden downstairs, hasn’t she?”
She does. Panicked, Veronica hadn’t known what to do with the drugs Penny Peabody had planted at La Bonne Nuit back when the speakeasy had first opened, so Reggie had simply stashed the box beneath a loose floorboard to buy them some time. Of course, a wealth of other distractions had come up. And so the jingle jangle had remained, mostly forgotten.
“Jug,” Betty scolds.
“I’m joking.”
“Are you?”
Sometimes she wonders. It’s not like blackmail in general is entirely out of the question for them. But the situation with Cheryl and FP had been different – life or death, practically.
“Betty.” Jughead looks hurt, and her chest feels tight with guilt. Of course he’s joking.
“No, I know.” She reaches for his hand again, squeezes it, and tries to lighten the mood. “God. Do you think if people ever overheard our conversations they’d lock us up?”
It seems to work – he looks amused. “In prison, or the looney bin?”
Betty laughs. “Either works.”
Jughead clasps her hand between both of his and stands up from his stool, tugging her closer as he leans over the counter. “C’mere.”
He kisses her sweetly on the mouth. She stands on her tiptoes and leans into him, but he pulls back after a moment, keeping his eyes trained on hers. “Let’s get out of town for a couple of days. Go camping, or something.”
“Camping?” she repeats.
“Or the beach, or…whatever. It doesn’t matter. As long as it’s not here.” Jughead sighs. “Ever since that night, everything’s just felt so dark. I want to feel light with you. But I don’t know if that’s even possible in Riverdale anymore.”
She thinks he’s right. And she hates that he’s right, absolutely hates it, because this is their home. This is their home, and no one – not Penelope Blossom, not Chas Murphy, not her father – should be allowed to take that away from them. It’s not fair.
But sometimes, she thinks, you just have to accept what is, and move on.
And there is no one she would rather do that with than the boy standing before her now, cradling her heart in his hands.

I... have a lot of problems with Riverdale post season 1, but honestly, at this point, my hugest problem with it is their age.
I’ve reached the point where I scream “THEY ARE CHILDREN!” at the screen roughly three times an episode, because this shit is just getting ridiculous.
They’re 16/17 year olds. They’re kids. And I know that TV shows aimed at teenagers likes to play the “all teens are Practically Adults Already so they get to do adult stuff and be in charge of the problem of the season instead of real adults!!!” card, but I’ve genuinely never seen a show that plays it up this hard.
Veronica is a teen, but for some reason, she is owning a bar?? How is that legal? Like, seriously, are kids allowed to run businesses in the US?? That kids work beside school, okay, but how does she get to own a bar...?
Same goes to Archie who now owns a gym. He’s a teen?? How is that legal, seriously I need to know if that is actually a thing you can do as a kid? You’re not old enough to drink and you’re still going to school, but sure you can own a bar or a gym?
Alice telling Betty that she had to “let her go”, like bitch Elizabeth Cooper is a minor and you are her only legal guardian, just because you joined a fucking cult doesn’t mean your child has to let you go, she is a child.
Jughead being leader of a fucking gang, like wow, seriously? JP, your son is a child, why do you let him run the Serpents? The Serpents, an actual gang, not some “kids banding together to be badass”, a gang including actual grown adults, how are they run by a kid? It’s not like he just became the king of the junior division, he’s the leader of the entire whole Serpents??
Archie, being in a “fight to the death” illegal fight-club in juvie like holy shit, I know the corrupt warden plotline is one that American shows really love, but like usually it’s actual adult prisons with grizzled actual adults. But those are children and you let them fight to the death and other adults pay to watch that. And then there is that ridiculous plotline where a mob boss starts a legitimate feud with this kid and hires hitmen to get this child murdered.
Minors like Cheryl and Kevin signing up for that stupid cult with no parental agreement. I mean, it’s not like there’s any parental supervision going on there anyway, huh.
I mean, the parental supervision is really something you can forget on this show entirely. All homes are wrecked one way or another, Fred Andrews is literally the only good parent on this entire damn show.
I just... I just really want social services to take those kids away from their parents? Cheryl’s mother has abused her and sent her to a fucking conversion camp and now Cheryl is living alone with her senile crazy grandmother?? Jughead’s father finally got the hang of it and put his life together but prior to that, when Jughead was literally living on the streets, not to mention his mother is a drug-dealer and also his father still forced him into the path of becoming a gang leader? Betty’s mother just joined a cult and her father is a convicted murderer? Veronica’s father literally tried to murder Archie and him and her mother keep blackmailing and manipulating her?
And yes, I know I’ve put some serious emphasis on “child” here and usually I do see that 16 or 17 year olds are very close to adulthood and many are already capable of making adult decisions, but the complete and blatant disregard for the fact that those are in fact minors and not adults it just so incredibly extreme in this show that all I can think of is the fact that, despite them having hired all those grown-ass adults to play them, those characters are supposed to be kids?? That it’s their parents and their friends’ parents who don’t see their own children and the friends of their children as just that, but that they all just accepted to take that 16 year old gang leader seriously and to think that that 16 year old boy should totally be killed by a hitman...
If these were... ten years older. Like, if they were the actual age of their actors. If those were college students, getting into all of those absurd situations, but the fact that you’re trying to sell me kids being piled with all those responsibilities, all that neglect and abuse and playing adult to a degree that I’d not even attribute to an actual twenty-seven year old? It’s just... ridiculous, at this point?

I walked downstairs because I couldn’t sleep, every time I close my eyes all I can see are those green eyes. I was going to make myself a cup of tea but I found a sleeping Archie sitting on a box with a baseball bat.
“Arch?” I gently shake him and he instantly holds the bat up.
“Hey, It’s just me!” I said putting my hands up.
“Y/N? Sorry.” He said and put the bat down.
“What are you doing up Arch?” I asked walking into the kitchen.
“I could ask you the same thing.” He said following me.
“I couldn’t sleep, I was going to make a cup of tea. All I can see are those eyes…” I sigh. Archie hugged me.
“I’m going to protect you and dad.” He said.
“Is that why you’re up?” I asked and he nodded. Before I could tell him how he needs sleep we heard footsteps coming towards our back door. Archie grabbed the bat and pushed me behind him, he slowly made his way to the door when Jughead opened it walking in.
“Whoa, whoa!” Jug said putting his hands up.
“Jughead, are you insane?” Archie asked putting the bat down again.
“Hey, you’re the one that looks like a Dream Warrior from Nightmare on Elm Street 3.” Jug said sitting down, I sat next to him.
“What’d the lawyer say?” I asked and he sighed.
“I’ve been walking around all night trying to wrap my head around how bad it is. It’s bad. My dad is facing 20 years…” He said and I warped my arm around him just to give him some form of comfort.
“Crap, Jughead, I’m sorry. That sucks.” Archie said.
“The lawyer thinks he should take the deal and that if he doesn’t, and the case goes to trial, he could be facing 40 years.” Jughead’s voice trembled a bit.
“I’m just really, really scared.” I could tell Jug was holding back tears. He stayed the night, in Archie’s room of course. The next morning I got dressed in a gray sweatshirt, jeans, high tops, and a necklace. I wasn’t really in the mood to put effort into today so I didn’t put makeup on.
The three of us walked to school and went to class. We were all sitting in class waiting for the teacher when Principal Weatherbee walked in.
“May I have everyone’s attention? I have some tragic news to share.” He said. A few students looked at each other and there were a few whispers.
“Ms. Grundy, who was a teacher here last semester, was found murdered in her Greendale home last night.” He said. I looked at Archie and I knew this was going to be hard for him.
“I know some of you were students of hers, and that this news will be difficult to process.” Archie got up and rushed out the room. I got up and followed him I knew he was going home. I sat in the living room with my dad and Archie pacing around.
“First, you get shot. Then, Ms. Grundy is murdered. All within a matter of days. Dad what if some crazy person is going after the people I care about?” Archie stopped pacing and stared at us.
“What? You think I’m nuts?” He asked.
“No son, I think you’re scared. Understandably so. Truth is, we don’t know anything about what happened to Ms. Grundy.” Dad said.
“She’s dead, She was killed! Right across Sweetwater River!” Archie shouted.
“I know. It was a horrible thing.” Dad said with a sigh.
“Dad’s right Arch, we don’t know what happened to her, It could be totally unrelated.” I said. I knew the odds of this being unrelated were slim and that Archie was probably right. Archie sighed and walked off. I spent the rest of the night doing my homework and try ignoring what was happening.
Jug called me that night telling me about his plan to get Cheryl and her mother to testify for leniency. He asked me to come with him and I obviously agreed.
“It’s not exactly downsizing, is it?” He said as we walked up to the house.
“Hobo. Y/N. Welcome to Thistlehouse.” Cheryl said as we entered the house.
“Mother’s in the conservatory. Follow me.” She said. We all sat down at a large table and to say it was a bit uncomfortable was an understatement.
“Thank you for sitting down with us.” I said.
“Of course, Y/N.” Cheryl smiled.
“Okay, so the reason we’re here…” Jughead started.
“FP’s lawyer thinks that if the of the victim shows mercy-”
“Mercy. That’s why you’re here.” Mrs. Blossom cut me off.
“Well, it’s an appeal for leniency, from you.” Jughead said looking at both Mrs. Blossom and Cheryl.
“To reduce my dad’s sentence.” Jug finished.
“Where was your father’s mercy when I spent those countless nights walking the halls of Thornhill in agony, obsessing over what happened to Jay-Jay? Imagining the worst. Where was your father’s mercy when I slept under the same roof as a cold-blooded killer, night after night.” Cheryl said cutting Jug off.
“Cheryl, FP didn’t kill Jason. Okay? That was your dad. You saw the video.” I pointed out.
“If it were up to me, I’d watch FP fry in the electric chair.” Mrs. Blossom said.
“We need this sordid chapter closed forever, and FP is the last loose end to tie up.” Cheryl raised her voice.
“I will not have a living, breathing reminder of the darkest chapter of my life walking the streets of Riverdale.” She finished. There was no use in convincing them so we left.
“What do we do now that Cheryl’s gone all Poison Ivy?” I asked as we walked away from the house.
“Blackmail. Extortion. If they weren’t literally an orphan and a widow, I would do it.” Jughead sighed. I have to help him out, I have to help FP out. I know FP and I know he’s not a bad guy, he doesn’t deserve this.
The two of us went home and I went to bed. The next morning I got up and got dressed. I decided to put in a little more effort today. I put on a band tank top, black jeans, a plaid jacket, black beanie, and a cute pair of shoes. Archie and I walked to school and everything was normal.
The school day had ended, and cheer practice had ended as well; I knew Cheryl always stayed late so I went to the locker room. I shut the door causing Cheryl to turn around startled.
“Give a girl a warning will you?” She said tossing a mirror in her locker.
“You want closure, Cheryl?” I asked walking closer to her.
“I want to help my boyfriend’s dad.” I said.
“I already told you-”
“And I’m telling you to help FP or-”
“Or what?” She cut me off.
“Or I wide-release the video of your father shooting Jason.” I smirked.
“Try having closure with that out in the world.” I said. Wow I’m horrible right now… It’s for Jughead. It’s for Jughead.
“I thought you gave the damned thumb drive to Sheriff Keller?” She said nervously.
“No, not before I saved a copy onto Jughead’s laptop.” I moved in a bit closer.
“One click, and the darkest chapter of your family’s twisted psychodrama becomes a viral sensation.” I said.
“Are you threatening me?” Cheryl asked shocked.
“This? No this is just fun girl talk.” I smiled.
“You could save a man’s life. Think about it, a nice end to a sad story.” I said and Cheryl contemplated for a second.
“If I testify, you’re giving me that video. And a guarantee that any and all copies in your possession will be erased.” She said.
“You have my word.” I said and turned to walk away but turned back.
“Oh, and you let Betty have the Vixens for Retro Night.” I added.
“You’re a stone cold bitch Y/N Andrews.” Cheryl smirked and I left.
It was the day of the trial and I was sitting next to Jughead watching as Cheryl talked.
“Ms. Blossom, you may proceed with your statement.” The judge said.
“Your Honor, I speak for myself and my mother when I say we forgive FP Jones for the part he played in covering my brother’s murder, we humbly ask the court for leniency. FP’s guilt has been blown out of proportion to satiate what my father’s suicide denied us…closure.”Cheryl said.
“As much as I sympathize, I can’t ignore the quality of Mr. Jones’ crimes. There were no extenuating circumstances.” The judge said. Cheryl thought for a second and I raised an eyebrow at her.
“My father threatened him.” She said quickly.
“I overheard them talking in daddy’s study. Daddy said he would hurt Jughead if FP didn’t comply.” Everyone stared at her shocked.
“Is that extenuating enough?” She asked.
“In light of these revelations, I suggest that we take a step back and reevaluate certain aspects of the case. At which time, we will revisit the sentencing. Adjourned.” Everyone gathered their things and FP turned around making Jug stand up.
“Is that a win?” FP asked.
“It’s a delay. So yeah.” Jughead said. I smiled as the two of them hugged.
Jughead was at Pop’s trying to save the dinner, I want to be there to help but I don’t know if I can go back there. I was sitting in my room working on homework when Archie came in.
“Hey, sis.” He said.
“Hey Arch, what’s up?” I asked.
“Do you…do you maybe want to go to Pop’s with me? I feel bad not being there to help out.” I was shocked.
“Arch, I don’t know. I mean I really want to go but I don’t know if I can.” I said with a sigh.
“Neither do I but maybe if we go together it won’t be as bad?” He said. I thought about it, I mean we shouldn’t let one terrible thing ruin our favorite spot right?
“Okay.” I said. I grabbed my jacket and walked to Archie.
“Let’s go.” He smiled.
We walked to Pop’s and when we got there the Pussycats were on the roof singing ‘Milkshake’. I smiled a bit, it was a cringy song but it fits so perfectly with the cause. We walked in and Veronica greeted us.
“Hey Daddy-O” She smiled at Archie.
“Y/N, Jug is over there.” She said. I smiled and walked behind the counter to hug him.
“Hey, Juggie.” I said.
“Hey Y/N/N, I didn’t think you’d be coming tonight.” He said with a smile.
“I wasn’t, but Archie wanted to and thought it’d be easier if I went as well.” I answered.
“Well, I’m glad you showed up.” He smiled and kissed me.
“Ugh, you two are like chimps in captivity, grooming and picking lice off each other.” Cheryl said. We pulled away and looked at Cheryl who sat down in front of us.
“Hello, Cher.” I smiled, just because I blackmailed her doesn’t mean I’m not her friend. She would have done the same thing if she were in my position.
“Mark this day in your diary. I lied under oath for you. And thank God I’m quick on my feet.” She said.
“Cheryl, thank you.” Jug said handing her the drive.
“Honor your promise to me.” We nodded and she walked off.
Pop Tate gave a speech about how Betty saved the dinner and how the Lodge’s made a donation that would cover any storms that might come. We all sat in a booth enjoying milkshakes.
“Ronnie, should I introduce myself to your dad?” Archie asked.
“You’ve faced enough dragons for one night. Next time, Archiekins.” V said.
“So, I guess tonight is a win for the good guys.” Betty smiled.
“A rare win, but yes.” Jug said.
“Thanks to you Betty.” I added. Archie was looking out the window and he looked uncomfortable, I was too but I know how to hide my feelings pretty well.
“You okay?” V asked.
“I’m here with you guys. So, yeah.” He said. Something was up with him but I knew it had to do with what happened to us.
Jughead walked me home because Archie wanted to talk to Reggie for a bit. I was working on the rest of the homework I had left when I got a call.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Y/N.”
“FP? What’s wrong?” I asked shocked.
“Jug, he went to see Penny.” He said and my eyes widened.
“What?” I asked shocked.
“You didn’t know?” He asked.
“No, he told me he was going to talk to another lawyer but he never gave names.” I said. “He didn’t pay her, I told him not to contact her again but we both know she’ll try to get him so I need to you do whatever favor she asks him got it?” He said and I sighed.
“FP, I told you I can’t join the Serpents. If my dad or Archie found out-”
“You don’t have to join just please do whatever favor she needs.” I sighed knowing I would regret this later.
“Fine…” I said.
“Thank you.” FP said and hung up. I grabbed my jacket once again and rushed out of the house. I walked into the tattoo shop and a few Serpents were there.
“Y/N, what are you doing here?” Ace asked.
“Where’s Penny.” I demanded.
“Where she always is.”He answered. I walked in her office.
“Y/N, what a surprise, what can I do for you?” Penny asked with a smirk.
“Stay away from Jughead.” I narrowed my eyes at her.
“Whatever favor you think he owes you, you can call me and I’ll be doing it.” I added. She smirked.
“FP call you huh? Even in jail, he’s still trying to keep his boy out of this mess.” She said.
“You will stay away from him and come to me for whatever you want got it?” I said through grit teeth.
“Thought you weren’t going to be apart of Serpent business?” She said with a smirk.
“I’m not, I’m just doing FP a favor.” I glared.
“Sounds like you’re a Serpent to me.” I growled and stormed out to go home. What did I just get myself into?

3x12 “Bizarrodale” - Riverdale Reaction
Not gonna lie, I was kinda hoping from the title that this episode would have things like terrifying Jughead with a giant carving knife from outtakes of the fever-dream sequence of season one. Or floating babies. What we got was a generally cohesive plot with the minor characters. So like...I’ll take it?
Let’s see some “inspired lunacy,” Riverdale!
“I’ll check my calendar, Sierra” — OOOOOH BURN. They didn’t even tell you the day, Marcus.
Hermione has no investment in procreations now that she’s not getting laid. DO IT YOURSELF is her new go-to response.
Who is this smug bug for finding Kevin and Moose in some random room making out? You want a gold star? A pat on the butt?
Oooof, Josie! Using ‘em and losin’ ‘em while wearing cute clothes! Sweet Pea wants something steady now that he can’t play G&G with his boyfriends on the regular.
Twice-widowed?! Did I miss something??? Maybe there’s a deleted scene of Penelope marrying Tall Boy. Or Malachai (who could be dead for all he’s been in this season). Or Claudius? That seems extra shady.
Is Tom just unemployed and Sierra’s sex bunny now? Because that’s weirdly adorable. Also if people could get more beds in this town so I’m not horrified wondering if it’s the same place Bughead has canoodled that would be great.
So…the main reason Kevin doesn’t want to break up with Moose is because…he doesn’t wanna cruise in the forest? Too much effort to get laid? This episode is not doing their relationship any favors for me, even if they’re both attractive young men. It’s like Kevin has to convince himself he even likes Moose outside of his enormous appendage.
Anyone else get chills when Cheryl reached out to touch Kevin’s hand? I was fairly certain she was going to set him on fire. Maybe that’s just me worrying about Cheryl in general. Let the former fat kid stress-eat!
Did they run out of costumes? Why is that one kid in full ROTC uniform and nobody else is? XD I get it. The metaphorical “divide” between Moose’s dad and their relationship but wow. That hat stands out in a classroom.
Cheryl getting excited for their first fight and then quickly crumbling into pleading is so…sad? I feel like Toni could probably manipulate her really horribly. Or for the better. Um. We’ll see. I’m not holding my breath.
Josie can’t drive? She ran her own band, her mom was mayor, dad’s a jazz star, but no car? No driver’s license? Shoulda taken advantage when she was dating Reggie to get a great deal on a ride! I know the pictured scene is later, but Archie is just so excited to be someone’s date and play music again that I wanted it up here.
Also it’s been 15 minutes without Bughead and I am physically in pain.
Oh good. Veronica finds robbing banks impractical, but she’s all about encouraging “inspired lunacy.” I think that’s how the show would describe itself.
The bad parents club is at it again.
“50 Shades of Blackmail” - the Choni spinoff
“I can’t believe I was shot…” — Reggie, unaware of what happened to Veronica’s “exes.” Honestly, seems like he got let off easy.
Archie - mauled by a bear, branded, buried alive
Nick St. Claire - “Car accident,” multiple ass-kickings
Now THAT’S what I call “dirty money!”
Okay I liked the throwback to the beginning of this season when Kevin surprised Moose with locker kisses
I don’t know how to feel about Choni cheating their way into a broken system. I like their outfits? I don’t care?
Ohhhhh Gladys. “More teenagers.” You and me, both. If only drug dealings could be kept between adults. I’m so annoyed with these people! Stop being involved in shade! Clearly you’re boss bitches and can manage an actual legit business instead of “borrowing” fancy cars and laundering dirty money with a bunch of rowdy teens and gang members. SET AN EXAMPLE, LADIES
Ha. Throwback to the Midnight Club entering through the window is kinda hilarious. What is with this poison-drinking nonsense? Again?!
OH MY GOD they’re setting it up for “jealous” Mason man to be the Gargoyle King. Yep. He is. Okay then.
30 minutes in, I get my shot. I’m crying. The hair. The beauty. I can’t handle it. DON’T STOP. My Bughead heart needs this! They are so lovely! Someone light their face and silence all the phones, k thanks.
Why does Kevin presume Betty would infringe on bunker boinking? She’s probably the one who came up with the damn schedule!
They look so damn satisfied. Can no one have peaceful pillow talk in this town?
What is with all this “gay=weakness” nonsense? Love is love. Sit down, ignorant, self-hating villains.
I squealed when I heard Jughead’s voice and saw him come in. Oh man. And now my heart is broken. Because the Jones girls are faking it. And Jughead’s gonna get his heart broken. NOOOOOO! I knew it the second JB hugged FP.
Good call Sierra and Kevin just keeping a giant cake for themselves with that bizarro topper. Was he sunk into the cake? On his knees? What are you two up to?
Goodbye, Moose! Bon voyage! Kevin seemed proud of him being out but sad he loses another boyfriend to crime in Riverdale.
It’s like this episode wants to highlight all the minors having reasons to cry. Ironically, Reggie was SHOT and was the least teary.
Oh, really?! A new gang/FAMILY? Of strangers?! In leather?! We need more aesthetic options in this damn town. The Pretty Poisons. My guess is if they can get the rights, Cheryl and Toni are gonna dress up as Harley and Ivy. Because they already dressed up like Catwoman.
I’m sorry, Archie and Josie, I can’t hear your duet over the sound of my heart breaking.
I don’t know, was anyone excited about Archie OR Josie dating someone new? Y’all need some time to work on yourselves. Revisit this after some therapy. Time is good. Look what it did for Tom and Sierra. I can’t imagine Julliard is much for aspiring pop stars anyway, but what do I know? She’s about to go to her own spinoff so I’m not emotionally invested.
I don’t know when I’ll get to see my darlings get the short end of the stick again. Oh well. Time for fanfiction, I suppose. Every time I think we’re thinning the ensemble they just swoop in with more. Fingers crossed our favs get to finish spectacularly next time ;)

Alice Watches Riverdale episode 2 I guess
I feel like this intro would be way more exciting to me if I had any interest whatsoever in Archie’s sweaty hairless teenage torso
I kind of love how awful Betty’s mom is ><
Aw Veronica is such a sweetheart and I feel like Betty has really misjudged her? Maybe I’ll be proven wrong idk but it seems kind of unfair that she should totally forgive Archie and yet have this strange ‘oh we’ll never really be friends’ attitude towards the new girl who just last episode was so passionately defending her and trying to help her out all the time?
is Jughead secretly the protagonist of this show? I hope so
ok I’m sorry but there is no WAY the school would actually have a class on dissecting frogs when a murdered student is being autopsied literally that same day and it’s common knowledge, let alone if his sister was IN THAT CLASS I mean come on they’d put a video on and leave it til next week at least
urgh boring teen drama
I...honestly don’t know if Archie realises he’s essentially blackmailing his teacher into a relationship or if he genuinely thinks she likes him? I mean I don’t have much sympathy for her because she got herself into this situation where she either has to pretend to have ~real feelings~ for an idiot teenager or lose her job and probably go to jail, but I really don’t know if Archie understands the situation? Like is he super naive or super manipulative?
YEAH JUGHEAD SECRET PROTAGONIST he’s gonna blow this thing wide open
I’m rapidly losing sympathy for Betty, who seems to be trying to hate Veronica for no real reason? Especially since Veronica is the new girl at school and has no real friends yet? ARCHIE ISN’T FUCKING WORTH IT
WHY ARE YOU BEING SO MEAN TO HER SHE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING SHE LITERALLY JUST KISSED A GUY YOU AREN’T EVEN DATING ONE TIME AND THEN BENT OVER BACKWARDS TO APOLOGISE BECAUSE YOUR FRIENDSHIP IS CLEARLY WAY MORE IMPORTANT TO HER
#TeamVeronica
oooh Jughead laying down some TRUTH
#TEAMJUGHEAD
oh my god Betty’s mom literally burning sage in her room to ward off Cheryl’s evil lmao
FIGHTFIGHTFIGHT I went to an all-girls school in the UK and I imagine this is exactly what co-ed schools in America are like all the time, just cheerleaders and jocks and fights and mysterious deaths and makeouts in closets 24/7
#TeamArchie’sHotAndWiseDad
aw it’s nice that Betty’s mom and dad came to the game to support her cheerleading even though they didn’t approve of her joining the squad (or at least her mom didn’t)
WHY IS THEIR TOWN MAYOR SO HOT WHAT THE HELL
i cannot believe for a moment that any goddamn high school band and cheerleading squad are this fucking professional and polished, these guys are incredible
is it just me or is it slightly on the nose that Veronica has a chocolate milkshake and Betty has vanilla?
SO MUCH INTRIGUE
I liked this episode more than the first one, though it was frustrating for the same reasons. I find the teen romance drama only sporadically interesting, and mostly it just irritates me when characters act in super irrational ways because or their absurd hormonal ~feelings~. On the other hand, it occurs to me that this does create some interesting conflict when combined with the more serious, high stakes aspects of the murder plot, so I suppose it possible it’s intentionally frustrating and that part of the conceit of this show is a small town full of people who all have their own agendas, prejudices and relationships that complicate events going forward. I suspect my lack of sympathy for both Archie, and to some extent Betty, who mostly just seem uninterestingly bland and a bit soppy, might hold me back from fully enjoying this show, but having more Jughead really helped this episode, and the central mystery drawing in more people and the abundance of unanswered questions is enough to keep me watching.

Anna | @writeradamanteve
Name: Anna
Age: 40
Location: New Jersey
Any other languages aside from English people can contact you in?: Filipino.
Favourite Riverdale characters and ships?: Aside from Betty and Jughead, I do love the awfulness of Cheryl Blossom and spitfire that is season 1 Veronica.
Cheryl Blossom is unapologetically terrible, and in real life, I would absolutely HATE her, but there’s something to be said about a woman who just goes all in. I get that hardness in her, and I like it that she admires others for it, too. That Toni brings out her soft side is a plus, but I would prefer that she stays true to her character outside of her romantic relationship.
Season 1 Veronica Lodge was a champion of women. I loved that about her. I may not have bought the whole “Betty is my best friend” assertion, but I did like that she was doing it to make amends for her past. S1!Veronica wanted to do better and she looked at Betty and thought Betty was a good person to hang out with to further that. Veronica as a person is methodical. Deliberate. And those are characteristics that can be both good and bad. I like it that Veronica can go both ways. I also mean that in a very gay way. No amount of her sleeping with Archie will convince me that her character can’t be bi. I can’t even say I hate her in season 2. She seemed a little lost there, but she was deciding between her family and her principles. For a while she thought that both could coexist, but when she realized in the end that it couldn’t, she broke away. That’s badass.
As for Betty and Jughead, I have at least 500K worth of words in fanfic that expresses the many ways I love them. But to be clear:
I love Betty for being so steadfast in her beliefs. She may have her insecurities when it comes to how she looks and what her mother may think of her, but when it comes injustice and friends endangering themselves for sex, she isn’t going to let anyone prevent her from doing the right thing. She is a go-getter, from saving Pop’s to saving her relationship (especially when Jughead was pulling away from her). She is a master at wielding household items — a skill, we learned, she got from Alice, who’s clearly handy with a lamp. She’s kinky, and she can be scary stone cold — forcing Cheryl to testify the truth with blackmail, watching Jughead punch Chic in the face without flinching, drowning a man to get him to confess to his sins (although ask me some other time about the morality and racial undertones of that, as that is an entirely different conversation). But she also deeply values her relationships. She cares for her loved ones so much, friend or family. That makes her so strong.
Let me tell you the many Jugheads I love: Soft!Jughead, Smughead Jones, Curious Jones, Snowflake!Jughead, ProudBF!Juggie, and even HaplessSerpent!Jughead. I like him best when he’s writing and when he’s making literary references in regular conversation. I love how sarcastic he could be and how his transition from loner weird kid in Riverdale High to popular serpent prince in Southside High tugs at my heartstrings and makes me mad, too. Like Betty, he cares fiercely for the people he loves. His need to belong becomes real to him, after he tried to deny it for so long. As much as we all have our issues with Season 2 Jughead, it added certain dimensions to Jughead that I love to write about in fanfic.
Favourite moments from S1 & S2?: I think I loved most of season 1, but the moments that stood out to me most were these: When Betty was dancing happily in her Cheerleading uniform, when Betty and Jughead were searching Jason’s room and got caught, when Jughead and Betty went to the Sisters of Quiet Mercy together, when Betty rushed to SSH to save Jughead only to find him laughing at the lunch tables with his newfound friends, when Veronica stood up for Betty at the tryouts, when Veronica showed Cheryl compassion, when the girls all banded together to make Chuck suffer the consequences of his misogyny (again, I have words for this, but mostly — why only him? His wasn’t the only name on that playbook), when Cheryl calls people names, when Jughead protected Betty from her vandalized locker, and of course, when Jughead climbed Betty’s bedroom window. While I can’t get enough of Jughead throwing Betty against the kitchen counter, I have to admit I still loved those other scenes a whole lot more. That said, I will still hope for what I mention in question #7.
Season 2 — ah, my goodness. I don’t need to explain how S2 broke my heart in so many good and bad ways. While there were some golden moments, I think most of us are in agreement that there were so many things that could’ve been done better. However, I STILL do have favorite scenes in this Hell Season: Jughead running the gauntlet was amazing, Betty working on Reggie’s car, the entire street race sequence, every time Betty uses a household object to save people (a shovel, a rolling pin, a poker), Jughead and Betty disposing of the car--from her house to the swamp, that entire episode of “The Wicked and the Divine”, Cheryl and Toni finding one another, and the hunger strike scenes.
What are your hopes for S3?:
Bughead summer sex montage.
MOAR Bughead Detective Agency.
A slammin’ Riverdale Parents Flashback episode.
Joaquin stays and Kevin gets better with love and BDE.
Kevin and Josie becoming step-siblings.
Reggie and Sweetpea being half-brothers.
Veronica being the Speakeasy Queen.
Cheryl stirring trouble (even if I know I’ll hate her for it).
Archie getting a clue.
Other fandoms you’re into?: My thing is that I don’t usually fan hard on more than one thing. My past fandoms were Harry Potter, Teen Titans, Anime (many of them at once), Cowboy Bebop, X-Files, Star Trek Voyager, and Firefly. At present, I love Star Wars (all of them — eh, except maybe for Episodes 1, 2, and 3), Wonder Woman, and all the Marvel movies.
What are some of your favourite movies/TV?: Classics: Galaxy Quest, Tropic Thunder, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, Forest Gump, The Matrix, Constantine, Clueless, The Breakfast Club, Transformers: The Animated Movie, Snatch, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Supernatural (Seasons 1 - 5), X-Files;
Most Recent: Pacific Rim, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Rogue One, Ready Player One, Anne with an E, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Anthony Bourdaine’s old and new series.
Favourite books?: There are so many, fam, but here are the ones that first come to mind:
Harry Potter 1 - 6 (yeah, sorry, not a huge fan of the 7th)
Emma by Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
All of Louisa May Alcott’s books
All of Sharon Shinn
All of L.M. Montgomery
Anne Marston’s Rune Blade Trilogy
Barb and J.C. Hendee’s Noble Dead Saga
The Infernal Devices Trilogy (Cassandra Clare)
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
All of Zilpha Keatley Snyder books
All of Paula Danziger books
Juliet Naked by Nick Hornby
Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer
The Unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose
The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi
The Terror by Dan Simmons
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Misery by Stephen King
Favourite bands/musicians?: I shall date myself, thanks:
Queen
Guns & Roses
Metallica
Nikki Minaj
Cardi B
Imagine Dragons
One Republic
The Killers
Lily Allen
Cake
Eminem
Amy Winehouse
U2
Sting
If you could live in any fictional world which one would you choose and why?: Harry Potter, no doubt. I would like to live in a world that relies on magic. I would like to go to a magical school like Hogwarts. I would love to fight in a resistance to overthrow an evil sorcerer. Plus, I would really, really love to meet Hermione.
Favourite food?:
Ramen (the real stuff, not the dried instant ones)
Banh Mi
Bun bo Hue
Sushi
Filipino Food — particularly Adobo
Tacos
Mangos and strawberries
Favourite season?: Summer.
Favourite plant?: This is an odd question to me as I don’t have a favorite plant. They are just there and sometimes they give me grief when I have to tend to the outside of my house because they’ve gotten unruly on some level (like — Fall, why do you have to discard your leaves all over my grounds?)
Favourite scent?: Baby’s breath, food, and freshly changed bed sheets.
Favourite colour?: Victorian pink.
Favourite animal?: Cats and Owls (I am definitely a witch by heart).
Are you a night owl, an early bird, or a vampire?: I sleep late and wake up early. I am an old person who can go on 5 hours of sleep.
Place you want to visit?: Portugal or Prague is next on my list.
Do you have pets? If you do, tell us a little about them: I have two pets. Pootie is a cat. He is a gray tuxedo. He loves me best, but he also hangs around my eldest child a lot. Every once in a while, he bothers my husband. Bob is a hermit crab. Bob bores the hell out of me and I am equal parts terrified that I will find him dead in his cage and tired that I am still taking care of him. His previous companions, Larry and Curly, have perished. When I found them dead, I screamed. Hermit crabs are creepy as fuck when they leave their shells, like I can’t stand them that way. I don’t know why I am stuck taking care of Bob, but he’s here, he is under my care, and God help me, he’s a stubborn bastard.
Tell us a little about yourself?:
For work, I’m a web producer/web developer, and I maintain about 20 sites for my company.
I used to work in publishing.
I went to law school and quit.
I eventually married my high school sweetheart and now we have 3 children.
I was always attracted to women, too, but growing up, I was too afraid to come out as bi. It still intimidates me, coming out to new people now. Most times, I just let them draw their own conclusions.
Fun or weird fact about you?: There’s nothing weird about me that you don’t already know. Fun fact: I kickbox in the nearby UFC gym, and one time, I was practicing with Tai pads with a dude who kicked me in the leg by accident — he just “grazed” me, really. I TRIED VERY HARD to pretend that I was alright. That night, my leg was swollen, and three months later, I saw that same dude fighting in the octagon on TV.
Asks for fanfic authors:
How long have you been writing?: 20 years.
Which is your favourite of the fics you’ve written?: That is impossible to answer. Truly. So I’m going to close my eyes over a list of my stories and where my finger lands, that’s my fave. It’s Drive.
Favourite fic/chapter/plot-point/character you’ve ever written?: This is even harder.
Polly’s character arc in Wicked. I really love how I fleshed her out in that story
The development of Kevin and Jughead’s friendship in Harvest to Home
Jughead’s relationship with Archie and Jellybean in Drive.
Betty’s story arc in Drive.
The twists and turns of Wicked.
The rich ambience of Harvest to Home.
Betty and Cheryl’s friendship in Harvest to Home.
The text conversation in Drive.
Sweet Pea’s background character in Drive.
Cheryl’s character in Wicked.
The car chase scene in Drive.
The hotel scene in Cowboy Jones.
The Peitho kitchen scene in Cowboy Jones.
Which was the hardest to write, and why?: Wicked was hard to write. I had set out to write this story with the twists and turns in mind, and those twists were interlaced. I had to set stuff up all throughout the beginning and middle so that the end would make sense. It was also harder because of Season 2. The background of those episodes in contrast with what I had in mind tended to make me nervous about reader expectations. Like when Hal was suddenly the Black Hood on Riverdale, it felt odd to not make him so terrible in Wicked.
One of the hardest chapters I had to write was a chapter written in Cheryl’s POV. Delving into her psyche was a difficult switch to turn on and at some point, I was doubting whether I can do it, but I did it and there it was. And I don’t regret it at all.
How do you come up with the ideas for you fic(s)? (examples: Do you draw inspiration from real life? Listen to music? Get inspired by TV/movies?) Do you have an process to your writing?: Inspiration is different every time.
For Harvest to Home, I wanted to write a fic about a very domestic Betty who made beautiful things. While I was writing that fic, I was deeply into the show Fixer Upper because we had just moved into our own new home. I was absolutely inspired by the designs I saw on TV and our need to decorate our home. I wanted Betty to be so good at it that she wrote a blog about home making. I had a lot of inspiration for that as well, since in the publishing company I used to work for, I worked with a lot of chefs and homemakers who published books.
For Drive, I was inspired by images of Mechanic!Betty at the start of Season 2. I think I may have seen a couple of fics inspired by the movie Baby Driver, where Jughead drove the getaway cars, and honestly, I got a little mad that Betty was never the driver. So I wrote the damn thing, and suddenly, Jughead was drag racing in Season 2. I wrote that fic with a lot of alternative music in the background. I usually started my chapters with the lyrics of those songs that inspired me.
For Wicked, I started writing it for Halloween and it basically grew too large of an idea to make it to Halloween of that year. I was also hesitant about how the fandom would receive a fic where Betty was a witch. Then there came that article about how Alice was possibly a Spellman. WELL THEN.
Cowboy Jones was absolutely inspired by the Camp Bughead prompts. I figured since I hadn’t been driven out of the fandom by torches and pitchforks because of Wicked, I’d try for some sci-fi, a genre I really love. I aimed to misbehave with Cowboy Jones, so I told myself that this was going to be my smuttiest work yet. I had also put out an X-Files inspired bughead short called The Truth is Here for that same prompt.
I answered the question about my writing process here and some more about character development here.
Idea that you always wanted to write?: Kitchen Confidential type story, where Jughead is an asshole chef who is determined to make his restaurant succeed. Betty becomes his sous chef and shows him a thing or two about cooking and about life.
Favourite character to write?: Betty and Jughead, no doubt.
Best comment/review you’ve ever received?: Well, there are so many commenters who have been so fantastic, but my favorite comments come from those who want to have a discussion with me, mostly because I like to reply to all commenters to express my gratitude and it’s easier to reply when I can pick up a conversation.
Best and worst parts of being a writer?: Best part is finishing a chapter and posting it. Worst part is getting flamed. I have been fortunate enough to have a welcoming group of readers here, but I’ve had my share of flames in other fandoms. I always try to dig deep for something constructive in them — there always is something that can be so useful to my writing, but man, those are TOUGH to handle sometimes.
Do you have any advice to offer?: Few things:
Don’t let fear rule your life. Embrace that fear and get to know it. Find out what makes it frightening, then overcome it.
Practice. That is the only thing that will make you better at anything.
Learn from failure. It’s a bitch of a teacher but it’s the best lesson you’ll ever have.
Find work that you love. It always pays.

We need to talk about the Bughead and Serena/Dan parallels
Because WHOA, how have I not seen anyone else bring this up? This shit is insane!
#1 The outsider boy and the sweet girl next door
This probably doesn’t need any more explaining, but for those of you who may not have seen either of these shows, both Jughead and Dan are seen as different than the rest of their groups, and both Betty and Serena are pretty blondes with “hearts of gold” (but really not at all, sorry)
#2 The boy is from the wrong side of town
Dan is from Brooklyn and lives in a loft, but he goes to school with over-privileged kids from the Upper East Side, while Jughead lives at the Southside of Riverdale, but is friends with kids from the North Side almost exclusively during all of season 1
#3 The girl from a perfect looking home, but with trouble under the surface
Serena lives with her seemingly successful mother, and sweet and happy younger brother, while it turns out her mother is unhappily involved with a man she doesn’t love, and her brother is in a facility being treated for trying to commit suicide, while Betty’s seemingly perfect parents and sister is involved with everything form drugs, to murder, to incest
#4 The boy has a broken family
Both Dan and Jughead has just their dad around, the main difference being that Dan’s sister, Jenny, lives with them, and Jughead’s sister, Jellybean, lives with their mother
#5 The girl constantly tries to fix everything and everyone around her
The reasons for this being many, but a common theme is that this tends to mess with their relationships with their boyfriends and best girlfriends
#6 The boy and his family has a bad economy compared to the girl, this continues to be a source of problems
As in boy feels like he can’t give the girls the life she deserves and is used to, while the girls doesn’t see this as a problem
#7 The girl has a best friend who’s slightly “darker” and more unapologetic than her
The similarities between Blair and Veronica (B and V, I mean COME ON?!) is many, just look at the way the dress, talk and act
#8 The boy has a “golden boy” best friend, who at some point, has a thing with the girl
Archie and Nate is really two peas in a pod, sweet as custard and just as smart. While Nate and Serena shares quite a scandalous past, Archie and Betty’s are much more innocent, but is still a source of hurt from Jughead
#9 The boy is a writer
And is constantly seen with their laptops writing about their friends, family and respective towns
#10 The boys father and the girls mother have a secret past (who is also very similar)
Betty’s mother Alice and Jughead’s father FP share a past where she came from the same “bad” side of town as him, while Serena’s mother Lily used to be a groupie for Dan’s father, Rufus’ band
#11 On again/off again
The relationship between these two couple are never in peace at long, and several break-ups endure thanks to everything from jealousy to blackmail, but they always seem to find a way back in the end
#12 They have a mutual need to protect one another, and neither wants the other to do this
Serena was always a damsel in distress in Dan’s eyes, while she constantly defends him to her friends, while Jughead spends a lot of season 1 to defend and protect Betty, while she does the same for him in season 2
#13 The girls have problematic fathers
Serena’s father, Dr. Van der Woodsen is a absent figure in her life for a long time, and when he shows up he’s a scammer and cheater, while Betty’s dad... well. I won’t spoil anything, but trust me. It’s bad.
#14 We almost never see or hear about the boys mothers
The stories are actually pretty similar too, as it seems both mothers needed “breaks” from the fathers, and while we know Dan’s mother and father ended up divorcing, we still don’t know much about Jughead’s mom
#15 The girls mother and boys father share a son, who may or may not be dead
Okay, so this was the point where I just has to step back and go “WHAT THE FUCK GUYS?!” Seriously, we know the whole thing with Dan and Serena’s shared brothers was a lot of dead/not dead/crashing your wedding, but it doesn’t seem like the FP/Alice kid is gonna be any simpler, does it?
Okay, so seriously. This is WEIRD, right?! It almost makes me wonder if they do it on purpose. Do you guys have any thoughts?

Content Warning: This article contains depictions and descriptions of violence.
When Amazon Prime Video announced the release of its series, Them (starring Shahadi Wright Joseph of Us), fans assumed it was a sequel to Jordan Peel’s hit thriller, Us. And while the series is a thriller, it's not tied to the film at all.
RELATED: 10 Great Movies That Are Hard To Watch Twice (Because They're Too Scary)
"Them" is anyone who does not look or act like "us." Although the series has deep racial overtones, it also centers around things that go bump in the night. It deals with the supernatural that makes the community of East Compton a playground for prejudice, hostility, and deception, leaving viewers awed by the end - wondering what is next.
9 Do The Neighbors Stop Harassing The Emory Family?
The East Compton "Welcome Wagon" lead by Betty Wendell (Alison Pill) orchestrated a "sit-in" upon the Emory's arrival. The neighbors gathered with tables and radios blasting music throughout the day outside of the Emory's house in an attempt to run them out of the neighborhood. But now that Betty is dead, will there be anyone else to lead the band of intolerant neighbors?
After witnessing Henry (Ashley Thomas) beat up Marty Dixon (Pat Healy) who tried to hang him in his basement and Lucky screaming that caused a ring of fire of protection in her front yard, will they finally stop tormenting the Emorys?
8 Does The Realtor Keep Selling Now That The Sergeant Is Dead?
Helen Koistra (Brooke Smith), the Compton realtor with a conscience. Does she keep selling to “them” now that her blackmailing partner, Sergeant Bull Wheatley (Derek Phillips) has died? Or will she have a change of heart and stop taking advantage of families who leave the south to try to find a better life and more opportunities in the west?
Possibly, she may continue to succumb to the enticement of money and power (mainly power, to gain respect and to be considered as a valuable asset to the company) because as the adage goes, “once corrupt, always corrupted”.
7 Will Betty's Nosey Neighbors Ever Find Out What Happened To Her?
It is hard to believe that Betty's militia (her neighbors) may never find out what happened to her. Her body may never be found. The pride of Compton finally perished by her own manipulation via the hands of the milkman. With the use of her beauty, charm, and dalliance, she thought she had finally got a pawn to due her evil bidding. But to her detriment, it backfired.
RELATED: The 10 Best 90s Thrillers Based On Books
But since the foundation of her friendship with fellow wives in the neighborhood was built on control and deceit, will they care about her wellbeing or will she become rumor mill folklore as her neighbors cast their vote about her whereabouts?
6 What Happens To The Milkman, George Bell?
True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten seems to be your everyday milkman. The ladies of the neighborhood are truly infatuated by him with his good looks and gentleman decor, but he only has eyes for one housewife, Betty Wendell. Once Betty decided to use him to get rid of the Emory family, she soon found out that she was not the hunter but the hunted and the prey of his excessive love.
George drugged and kidnapped her in his bomb shelter and then killed her when she could not pass his true test of love. But what was his next plan? Is there another housewife he has his eyes on? Or does did it all end with Betty, his one true love?
5 Does Anyone Find Out That Henry Emory Killed Sergeant Wheatley?
A wolf in sheep’s clothing is the best way to describe Sergeant Bull Wheatley (Derek Phillips). He added a feeling of safety for the Emory family while lining his pockets through the blackmailing realtor, Helen Koistra.
RELATED: 10 Of The Best Thrillers From The Last 5 Years
But justice came his way one night by the hands of Henry Emory, who was dealing with issues of his own, as he shoots him and leaves him dead in the street. It is hard to imagine that this was not seen by any of the overly inquisitive neighbors.
4 Is The Emory Family Cursed Forever?
When Lucky confronts The Black Hat Man (Christopher Heyerdahl) in her basement, he raises the question of what will she do when she realizes that her family is cursed forever? What did he mean by that? Are they truly cursed considering what Lucky went through? Or does it go back even further, back to when her husband was in World War II?
It seems that they have overcome one large hurdle with The Black Hat Man bursting into flames. But was that the end of the book or the start of a new chapter?
3 Will Lucky Go Back To The Psychiatric Facility?
As the tenth day is revealed, Lucky is in a psychiatric facility, strapped to a bed. But how did she get there? In the last scene of the previous episode, we see her husband, cradling their dead son after he opens the box marked "CE." It seems that Lucky, not able to bear the loss of their son, dug up his grave and kept his remains in a box when they left North Carolina. Flash forward and we see her in the hospital getting ready to have a lobotomy, but she escapes as a guard watches her walk out.
RELATED: 10 Most Underrated Performances in Horror Movies
But is Lucky truly free of her psychotic episodes? She defeated The Black Hat Man, but was her emotional demons banished with him, or is the trauma she endured too much to overcome?
2 What Happened To The Family That Attacked Lucky And Killed Her Son?
In an old white house in the country of North Carolina viewers are introduced to Lucky and her son eating peaches. They meet a bizarre, elderly woman who sings a dark rendition of “Old Black Joe,” who wants Lucky's son, Chester. As her kindred joins her, they assault Lucky and play a cruel game of “cat in the bag” with her son, killing him.
But where did this family come from? Did they terrorize anyone else and were they eventually caught? The “cat and mouse play” of the series teases fans, begging the question if they were actually real or a figment of Lucky’s imagination so that she could rationalize killing her son.
1 Do The Emorys Survive Day 10?
As the season finale comes to a close, police are outside of Lucky and Henry's home pointing guns at them while Nina Simone’s "To Be Young, Gifted and Black” plays. Surrounded by a ring of fire, do Lucky and Henry give up without a fight to protect the kids, or has their ability to trust anyone completed diminished?
Are shots fired by the police first and questions asked later to de-escalate the situation for the betterment of the neighborhood? Or has the neighbors become so furious craving for bloodshed, they take matters into their hands?
