Robert Doisneau / The Vogue Years
Foreword Edmonde Charles-Roux
Flammarion, Paris 2017, 357 pages, 25x31,5cm, ISBN 97 82080 203 175
euro 50,00

From high-society balls and fashion shoots to portraits of artists and scenes from urban life in France, this handsome volume—which features an open spine binding so that it lays flat to show off the photographs to their best advantage—showcases Doisneau’s best photographs for Vogue Paris.
Celebrated photographer Robert Doisneau worked for Vogue from 1949 until 1965, illustrating a postwar France filled with a renewed zest for life. His little-known images of haute couture featured models like Brigitte Bardot and Bettina, who he photographed in the studio and out on the streets. He chronicled the members of the café society in their stately homes and at glamorous costume galas, dancing the night away. Best known for his humanist approach, he masterfully captured scenes from everyday life—from the grace of a wedding procession over a footbridge to the petulance of a child impatient for cake. Doisneau’s photographs captured the spirit of the era and featured celebrities like Karen Blixen, Picasso, Colette, and Jean Cocteau, as well as jazz musicians, movie stars, and humble craftsmen at work. Legendary Vogue editor in chief Edmonde Charles-Roux’s personal homage to the photographer—who was her friend and colleague—offers intimate insight into the man behind the camera, as complex and beautiful as the people and places he immortalized.

Every Flower Mentioned in The Shuttle and the Symbolism Behind Them
[This post may contain spoilers for Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Shuttle. If you're interested in reading it, it's available free on project Gutenberg!]
Anyways, diving right in, I love victorian flower language and I love themes and meanings in literature and I especially love The Shuttle, so I figured, why not make a post about all of them! Here's every flower mentioned in The Shuttle and why it's significant, in order of mention in the book!
"A New England schoolma'am, who has made a Cook's tour, will almost have tears in her voice as she wanders on with her commonplaces about hawthorn hedges and thatched cottages and white or red farms. Why are we not unconsciously pathetic about German cottages and Italian villas? Because we have not, in centuries past, had the habit of being born in them." ch. ix
In this chapter, while Bettina is talking about America's ties to England, she mentions hawthorn. Hawthorn represents hope. When America thinks of England, they think of hope.
"A little withdrawn from this shaft of brightness stood two figures, a dowdy little woman and a hunchbacked boy. The woman held some ferns in her hand, and the boy was sitting down and resting his chin on." ch. x
Fern shows up here, when Rosalie and Ughtred meet with Betty at Stornham for the first time. Fern represents shelter, confidence, and magic, which fits in neatly with how Betty becomes a shelter for them, builds their confidence, and touches the whole of their lives with her own blend of magic. Fern shows up later when Dunstan shows her around the gardens at Dunstanwolde, and again twice when Selden makes his debut.
"She sat down upon a clump of heather and began to cry. She hid her face in her spare hands and broke into sobbing." ch. x
Heather represents good luck. Upon meeting her dear little sister again, Rosalie falls into a heap of good luck. The only other times heather is mentioned in this book is at the end of the chapter, and in chapter fourty-five, in reference to this moment. The most significant good luck that ever befell Rosy was that, after all these years, her sister came back for her.
"But the golden ways through which he led her made the afternoon one she knew she should never forget. They wandered through moss walks and alleys, through tangled shrubberies bursting into bloom, beneath avenues of blossoming horse-chestnuts and scented limes, between thickets of budding red and white may, and jungles of neglected rhododendrons..." ch. xv
This is one of my favorite floral usages in this book. Rhododendrons symbolize warning, and the characterization of Betty and Dunstan wandering through the fallen estate's garden, past "jungles of neglected warnings," is so powerfully worded. Whatever warnings ought to be issued here, they've long been forgotten.
"He had already, even in his guise of keeper, noticed one thing, which was that while at times her eyes were the blue of steel, sometimes they melted to the colour of bluebells under water. They had been of this last hue when she had stood in the sunken garden, forgetting him and crying low: 'Oh, if it were mine! If it were mine!'” ch. xv
Admit it, this is the flower you came to this guide for, isn't it? Bluebells are mentioned a whopping eight times in this book, and every single time it's either Dunstan noting the color of Betty's eyes, Dunstan comparing the color of her eyes to those of a heroic ancestor's lady-love, and one time when Dunstan isn't even in the room and the author still points out that his lordship is the one who put a definition to the richest hue his lady love's eyes can hold. And it's no wonder Burnett chose this flower to characterize the affection between this pair. Bluebells represent constancy, gratitude, humility, and everlasting love. Surely, there are no better words to describe their love than these, especially the latter two. Throughout the novel, it's made clear that the only thing in all the world keeping Betty and Dunstan apart is themselves. Were any other rich American to fall in love with a poor English nobleman, the proposal would be swift and imminent. Both of these two, however, are so swallowed up in their own pride that they refuse to stoop so low as to appear as some silly status-chaser or gold-digger. It's the sacrifice of this pride (as noted by Penzance in ch. 35) that frees them to love each other, or, they cannot love each other if they do not bear humility. The second half of the coin for why bluebell so aptly represents them is evident: for a couple who's love has come as close to cheating death as one can, what better title is there to claim than everlasting love?
"Betty found old Mrs. Welden's cottage. It was in a green lane, turning from the village street—which was almost a green lane itself. A tiny hedged-in front garden was before the cottage door. A crazy-looking wicket gate was in the hedge, and a fuschia bush and a few old roses were in the few yards of garden. There were actually two or three geraniums in the window, showing cheerful scarlet between the short, white dimity curtains." ch. xxiv
In this scene where we see the flower box of Mrs. Welden, the elderly lady who refused to leave when asked to be sent to be taken care of at a workhouse, we see three flowers. Fuschia represents a confidence, or a confiding love. Roses represent love, and geraniums represent comfort. All these connect to Mrs. Welden's ties to her cottage. This has been her home throughout her life, keeping her secrets, holding her love, always a comfort to her. The flowers in her windowbox are enough to tell the story of why she'd never leave.
"She told her story of Kedgers, and showed the chosen spot where thickets of lilies were to bloom, with the giants lifting white archangel trumpets above them in the centre." ch. xxv
Lilies represent magesty, and a return of happiness, while angel trumpets represent vibrancy and vivacity, and that's what Betty's arrival brought for Kedgers and his gardens of flowers.
"As Miss Vanderpoel turned with him into the path, she stooped and picked a blossom from a clump of speedwell growing at the foot of a bit of wall.
'Lady Jane's eyes are just the colour of this flower,' she said." ch. xxxiii.
Speedwell is to Jane and Tommy what bluebells are to Betty and Dunstan, and, as such, they are not without meaning of their own. Speedwell represents loyalty and faithfullness— and what could better represent these two who've been in love since childhood than flowers that stand for that same faithfulness and loyalty?
There you have it! Let me know if there's anything I missed; I'd love to share more! Also, my major source for flower language is a chart someone on discord made. If you'd like to see a copy of it, it can be made available upon request!
