Hi, I share your strong pro-medicine, pro-vaccines, anti-woo beliefs. I also have chronic digestive issues and insurance that won’t cover the useful specialists. The gastroenterologists I’ve encountered are helpful for making sure my insides look okay but they don’t seem to have much training around nutrition and food science. Nutritionists are unlicensed and I find them about as trustworthy as chiropractors, and I can’t get insurance to cover a registered dietician. The internet is saturated with pseudoscience junk and “miracle cures”, and in moments of desperation I’ve fallen for some of them. Luckily I haven’t been harmed by anything so far, but I don’t think they helped much either.
I was wondering if you or your followers have any resources on IBS and/or GERD that are scientifically sound and written for a general audience? Or advice for identifying when pop-sci-style “food science” articles are a scam?
I deeply regret to inform you that I was so annoyed by this exact problem that I literally went back to school to start working on getting a degree in nutrition and got two and a half years into a second bachelor's degree before realizing I wouldn't be able to get into any programs in my area that I could afford because the local state schools aren't accepting second bachelor's applicants. (Cal State Chico, I love you and you are too far away, it's not meant to be)
Nutrition information online is completely infested with woo and I am hesitant to point people toward one of the good resources I used to reference because it is politically batshit.
If you are looking at a food science article on the internet and are trying to figure out if it's a scam the big red flags to look out for are:
anything claiming to be a silver bullet; there are no silver bullets, no magical treatments, no one weird food that will fix the problem or one weird supplement that will make everything better.
Over-emphasis on a specific type of diet (diet as in "all the food that a person consumes" not as in "weight loss tool") for a general population. It's irresponsible to recommend a rigorous, restricted diet to a wide variety of people because people are so different that one diet that works for one person (say a vegan diet) might be unhealthy or difficult to manage for another person who would thrive on a different diet (low fat, low carb).
Anyone who tells you to cut out an entire food group or macronutrient is a liar who is trying to get your money. Unless it is your personal medical doctor who is saying "you need to stop eating grains" you do not need to stop eating grains and should not stop eating grains. You also do not need to stop eating fat, or eat only protein, or cut all fruit out of your diet. (caveat: there are some conditions that require a very low fiber diet, but even on that diet there are some fruits you can eat)
Beyond that, what you can do to make sure you're getting the best information possible is:
look up the author of any article you're looking at and see what else they've written; check what their qualifications are. See the people they interact with or have collaborated with. If they work heavily with people who are, say, antivax or proponents of raw milk, you should not trust their work.
If you see something that claims to treat your condition or help with nutrition, search "[subject] research study" or "[subject] scholarly research" and see what comes up. Read at least a few papers on the subject and see if there's a consensus or if there are broad disagreements. Get into the habit of looking up the impact scores of journals and researching the history of the journals.
Learn to recognize the woo keywords with your particular illness. Jinx and Vi are still teenagers, their age gap would be like 3 years in this AU, so when it's Jinx's freshman year Vi's already a Senior.
People were genuinely surprised finding out the little chaotic science geek and the sports-minded athlete were SISTERS since they were so different friend group and personality wise.
(Cait & Vi)
Vi is a jock! She does winter wrestling and she's the best in her weight group. She's also involved in fall and spring sports. Baseball and football are her other seasonal sports.
People know Vi to be just a sports junkie, she has pretty good grades but nothing exceptional.
She's not so great at science , which forces her to be tutored.
Vi and Cait met in their sophomore year, she needed some help improving her grade in order to be eligible for the spring season sports since she was failing history at the time, so Caits assigned to help her out.
Caitlyn’s a goody two shoes icl, like she’s apart of the student council and her mom’s the superintendent. She’s in ROTC and she’s so very loud about it, she’s basically the FACE of the program.
Cait and Vi get close because Vi keeps seeing Caitlyn around and she’s become sort of a hallway crush, but with her fuckboy attitude Vi tries to flirt the second she realizes that she’s somehow managed to get Caitlyn as her tutor!
Cait is used to people flirting with her, she usually brushes it off since she’s a man magnet. Vi on the other hand, is weirdly making her flustered? It’s strange, really.
Cait and Vi start getting closer and eventually start dating the year after.
(Ekko & Jinx)
Ekko and Jinx are the same age but Ekko's older by a few months so he brags about it.
Ekko D&D nerd. He dragged Jinx into it, she only complied since Ekko asked so nicely (he threatened her kindly)
Jinx isn’t into extracurriculars, did track in middle school so she’s exceptionally fast and she’s in the track and field team in high school but she skips practice A LOT but the coach lowkey needs her so she doesn’t get punished.
Jinx has straight A’s but she skips classes and has days where she just can’t attend class so she does some of her work online (it’s like 70/30) in person-online; she has accommodations in her 504 plan that lets her listen to music all the time and lets her leave class whenever.
Jinx is just a nickname that was given to her while she was a kid since every sports team she cheered for ended up losing (she only ever went since she wanted to see what Vi was up to) and she was Jinxing every game which DID hurt her feelings when she was like 6 but now it’s kind of funny since she doesn’t care for sports.
She’s slightly uncomfortable letting random people call her Powder now since she introduces herself as Jinx, only her closer friends call her Powder.
She no longer Jinxes games now though but it was funny while it lasted.
Ekko and Jinx have this weird rivalry-friendship-situationship where they ARE childhood best friends who back each other up but they refuse to pair up together when working on projects since they wanna see who can get better grades or impress more people.
Ekko and Jinx is like “the boy/girl next door” trope since they’ve been casually hanging just whenever since they were little itty bitty kids. So people kind of know Jinx as “that girl friend he’s always around” and Ekko as “that boy friend Jinx is always around” to their respective classmates and acquaintances.
Ekko and Jinx used to get the “wait you guys aren’t dating” comment at least once a month. (They’re not dating just yet)
Ekko is in the art club and has never considered doing a sport (Ice hockey has intrigued him more and more every year though) and he’s in a bunch of clubs to compensate. He established the D&D club, being in a little “green thumb” club for plant parents, afterschool computer-science club which is run by Viktor and Jayce. He’s got a pretty decent variety of friends because of it and larger social circle. He’s known to be this friendly little nerdy guy and people either love him or think he’s weird.
When Ekko doesn’t have extracurriculars to focus on he’s out practicing new skate tricks,
Ekko is the plant dad of the CENTURY, he has like 20 plants in his room, he’s nurturing a garden in his backyard and he has the prettiest bushels of flowers in the house. He’s got the greenest of thumbs.
Jinx has a black thumb and kills every plant in a 20 mile radius. No but seriously, when Ekko tried giving Jinx a plant to take care of as an attempt to bond, it DIED within a week. (She drowned it) and when he gave her an easier plant to take care of, she fed the thing rubbing alcohol and didn’t notice until it was DEAD.
Ekko asks Jinx to Hoco, that’s when they started dating. Everyone calls it like “oh my god finally” “you weren’t dating before?” Etc. it’s really cute but there’s minimal changes!! They just start like, kissing or something.

Pilot Program Band AU
Some background: I'm still thinking about Meet Me @ The Altar and which of their songs best fit each member of the pilot program, and I just remembered this absolutely fucking stellar reincarnation AU Yu Yu Hakusho fic (Find Me Through Your Reprise by SZFiction) where Kuwabara and Yusuke get together due to Kuwabara making Yusuke mixtapes and introducing him to his favorite music and then ends up being reincarnated as rock star.
So Sam and K stay in touch more thab they did in canon before getting to Gowpenny.
They have their pink pals thing but when K starts leaning away from this they both decide to lean pop punk instead of emo. I'm especially picturing Sam with Edith's (mm@ta) fantastic hair do's from various shows.
They get really into pop punk music and they start writing and playing together online as a way to maintain that closeness. K plays base and Sam does the majority of vocals.
K writes alot of the songs but doesn't like singing because everytime they go to sing they can't stop themselves from leaning into this Disney princess vibe and the entire reason they stopped the pink pals thing was the discomfort that was caused as their magic began to start manifesting. Not enough to be obvious but enough to make K uncomfortable for reasons they're not sure of.
Sam and K are doing covers and posting them to a YT channel K made them. Sam's magic is also starting to manifest at this point, she's magnetic, they're magnetic. Their fanbase doesn't jump to the thousands over night but the fans who find them, who their music resonates with, are locked in.
They both start taking this more seriously and they realize they need a drummer.
Jammer is still doing basketball but he also fucking loves drumming. The feeling of nailing a cover is almost as good as the feeling of winning a game. And sometimes when it feels like he's being pulled in too many directions, he can just put in his earplugs, focus on keeping the beat and let the rest of the world fade away.
One of his teammates shows him a video from K and Sam's YT and it's like a switch flips. There's an instant connection to the two of them, he listens to all their covers and the original stuff they've put out and e-mails them to ask about being their drummer.
Sam and K get this email and watch a video of Jammer playing, and he's really good. Also he seems very chill and I think maybe both of them are a little weary of a guy coming into this thing they created to remain close and not fitting or trying to throw his weight around but even with just the email and the video - there's just something about Jammer that's reassuring. Plus he mentions he has older sisters so the three of them agree to try it out online at first.
Things go pretty well. It's hard making covers from three different cities/states but they manage with the magic of the internet. And things go so well they decide to arrange a meetup so they can record some covers and the new song K just wrote in person.
Another switch flips. Jammer has always been great but there's something about being together, being able to see each other or learning to be comfortable in each other's spaces, and suddenly the synergy is off the charts.
The stuff they filmed/recorded during that one trip is enough to really start to put them on a map and they start booking small shows here and there. Nothing too much because Jammer still has basketball but they can book stuff in the cities he does away games in and that helps.
Evan Kelmp is largely the same lonely, angry, cursed teenager that he is in canon. He still has the shadow, and the fights in gas station parking lots, and the wish that he could just be normal.
And he almost feels normal when he's listening to the music from this band one of the older teens at his last group home introduced him to. They were kind enough to give him their old Zune with a bunch of stuff loaded onto it. Obviously none of the members have his specific brand of issues but their lyrics speak to his lonelines, his self loathing and confusion. The stuff that's still there even when the demons are quiet for once.
Evan gets a text from that same teenager telling him that the band he loves is going to be playing at a show in some local guy's basement and he's almost too afraid to push his luck. Surely actually going to that show will break the illusion that he can have this one thing, but then he goes anyway because how can he not. And it's so good and he gets to actually talk to them after the set and say how much their music means to him and they're so kind and warm (and the last switch flips).
Anyway a week later all four of them get a letter and a pellet from a weird ass bird, wild.

Recently, I attended the Gender Spectrum Family Conference, which focuses on helping parents and caregivers understand and meet the needs of their transgender and gender-variant children.
One of the things that can be hard, when choosing to come out to parents, is the fact that you might feel like you have to educate them about gender issues, both on a general level and in terms of your own identity; this can make a process that might already feel overwhelming or stressful even harder to manage. Letting an organization that's dedicated to this sort of education do some of the work for you can take some of that weight off of your shoulders.
Also, it's helpful for parents to have their own source of support in handling a child's gender identity or transition. Of course, you're going to be the best expert in your own identity and what support you specifically need from your family and loved ones, but it might be a big help for everyone involved if you can connect them to some of these organizations, just so you don't have to do all of the heavy lifting with regards to getting everyone else on board.
This is all US-centric, I'm afraid, simply because that was the scope of the conference. Some of these are national organizations; others are based in and serve smaller areas, like a city or a state, but provide enough helpful information on their websites to be useful to a wider population.
Gender Spectrum: This is a Bay-Area-based group that provides a wide range of support to parents and caregivers of trans and gender-variant youth, including information about medical, legal, and education options. They provide local in-person support, but they have a lot of information online and provide support by phone as well. Having been to the Family Conference, I would certainly recommend it to parents who want to get a lot of in-depth information on how to access and provide support.
PFLAG: Not all PFLAG chapter groups are equally educated about trans issues, but at the top level it’s an extremely supportive group; this is a great resource for parents who need their own support. There are chapters across the US and the central organization has a lot of good basic, introductory information online. This could be a great resource especially for parents who might feel like they need extra support.
Trans Youth Family Allies: This site has information and resources for trans youth and parents; the parent resources include basic introductory information, help navigating medical transition and transition at school, and some tips on how to be an ally and advocate for trans youth. Some of their resources are available in Spanish as well as English.
Trans Active: An education and advocacy group for trans youth and their families based out of Portland, Oregon. They provide educational trainings for schools, hospitals, and other organizations, have several in-person support groups, run a binder-exchange program, and have an active mailing list. They are doing work currently to expand their in-person services outside of the Portland/Pacific NW area.
Trans Youth Education and Support: An advocacy group based in Colorado; they've done a lot of work on safer school programs and have also worked on a PFLAG advisory committee to ensure that their trans support is as helpful as possible. They have meetings in-state but also have plenty of resources on their website as well.
Trans Youth Equality Foundation: An advocacy and support group based in Maine; they provide workshops, training, and support services for youth and families. Their website also has information on legal and medical issues, as well as social transition at school.
