For the Love of WIPs (Drarry style)

There's a lot of things I miss about LJ, but right up there was the weekly posting of the H/D Prophet run by @sassy-cissa and groovelover at the conclusion. It began posting in 2005 and It stopped posting in 2021. I know it was a ton of work for the mods to run it, but it truly kept Drarry fandom informed of all the one-shot fics, art released that week, and chapter updates for current Drarry WIPs, recs, etc... Also listed were the fests and what state they were in. Take a look at the links I posted above and see all the goodness. It was very centralized. *sigh happy times*

What made me think of this was I love reading Drarry WIPs but keep finding recent chapter fics that I missed while being posted and only found them completed and others that I'm currently reading but found by chance.

So, I thought I'd share the WIPs I'm keeping track of and those that have been completed recently that I've read.

Notes: Most WIPs (chapter fics) are long fics (over 50K and up to 1M). There are readers that see some lengths of completed fics and wince. That is one reason why chapters are often released weekly or whenever, so you have digestible amounts (5-15K). Sometimes as an author I feel in a Catch 22, readers don't have time to read long fics, but then won't read a WIP until completed. LOL

Below the cut are WIPs that I've read and that have been recently completed. I'll post ongoing WIPs that I'm reading tomorrow! I'm not listing the Warning and Tags for these fics as I'll leave that up for you to decide on what to read or not. But, there are a few here that do have strong warnings in the tags and/or Author Notes. One final note: I'm listing WIPs (chapter fics) that were posted over a time period, not completed chapter fics that were listed on one date as a whole. OMG this is a long post!

Recently completed Drarry WIPs

Passing Stranger (53K) by @lettersbyelise This just completed yesterday! I have 2 chapters left to read. :) Summary: Five years after the war, Harry, listless and depressed, stumbles upon Draco Malfoy playing the violin in an underground bar in Muggle London. The catch? Draco lost his memories five years ago. Ignoring his friends’ advice, Harry befriends an unwitting Draco, overlooking the fact that their mutual attraction might not survive if Draco’s memories return. Comment: Haven't quite finished but I love, love, the Draco in this fic. You could feel that this is Draco stripped of all the heavy responsibilities he grew up with including having a bigoted father. The tension is palpable with Harry being attracted to this Draco but feeling that Draco needs to be Draco Malfoy to move forward. *ugh*. 2. The Boy from the Piano Shop (90.5K) by @soliblomst completed 2/25/24. Summary: After going blind in a reckless attempt to avenge Ginny's death, Harry battles with severe depression. One day, he stumbles upon a quaint piano restoration shop in the heart of London and meets the owner, a kindly old man, and his introverted young apprentice, whose voice sounds strangely familiar. As Harry and Draco slowly reconnect through private piano lessons, the small workshop becomes Harry's refuge, offering him a glimmer of hope in a world without eyes. Set five years after the Battle of Hogwarts. Comment: I binged this fic bad!!! There is so much to love in this fic but one of the standouts is the OC Richard. You will love him, too. The gradual build up of Drarry is so well done. The dealing with Harry's depression is so raw and real. No cutting of corners. The ending was one of the best I've read in celebrating what is to come for Harry and Draco. And Draco, in the final scene will make you cry *happy tears*. 3. The Star Splitter (219K) by @oflights completed 3/22/24. Summary: On a routine time travel assignment to the past, Draco stumbles upon 7-year-old Harry Potter and witnesses his neglect and mistreatment by the Dursleys. In the moment, there is only one solution, even if it goes against all his training as a Time Agent: he has to bring Harry back to the future with him. In which Draco burns his life down for the sake of his former school rival. Comment: I think I followed this one from the start as I do everything @oflights! OMG the action, the tenseness, the magical lore, the worldbuilding, and the sweetness of Draco raising young Harry will have you banging that "next chapter" button. The Drarry in this happens slowly and has its ups and downs but so so worth the wait. The bond is strong and at the end and you will recognize and cheer for this Harry who says Fuck it all, I ain't letting this go.

4. Spotlight (All Eyes on Us) (58K) by @pixiedunhoff completed 3/15/24. This is the 5th and final installment of the Dark Arts to Dance Floor Series (317K) which began posting in July '23. Spotlight Summary: The spotlight can scorch.

“Has the wizarding world ever seen a couple quite like Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter? Though the pair remain frustratingly private and out of the spotlight, hardly ever seen in public together, our readers understandably demand to know more.

‘They’re happy together,’ Minister of Magic Hermione Granger exclusively tells the Prophet, before quickly ducking into a meeting for Squib Rights. ‘They’re so very happy.’”

- Daily Prophet, 2 February 2018 Comment: Pixie says in the notes, you may only need to read the 4th installment to completely get this fic, but hell, I say read them all. Pixie is newer to Drarry writing (longtime reader). I love the casualness and realness of the characters and how they interact. In Spotlight they so capture the feel of being backstage to a 'music rock star' (in the Muggle world) and on the rise in the magical one. As you're reading this fic, it might come across as being a lighter AU type fic, but don't be fooled there is much depth and layers upon layers to both Harry and Draco. Pixie just eases you into it. There were points that I just had to stop reading for a moment and digest exactly what was going on. Pixie will be on my Current WIP list, too! 5. Skybound (61K) by @xanthippe74 Summary: No matter how much Harry Potter wanted to believe he’d left danger behind when the war ended, it found him again anyway. All he had to do was step out his own front door on a Tuesday morning. A Drarry re-imagining of Howl’s Moving Castle.

Comment: I haven't finished this one, yet, but wanted to list it here. It's 6 chapters and I'm only 2 chapters in, but holy hell what world building and magical lore (and one very nasty curse). I'm not familiar with the original source, but that's okay. I'm very happy being carried along in one floating house! I'm a big fan of @xanthippe74 and am fully confident I'll love this as much as the author's other stories. Okay, I'll be back tomorrow with a list of currently posting Drarry WIPs, including two stinging hot A/B/Os, but in very different ways.

Best Violin Updated 2021

Typically beginners don't got to learn violin extended techniques just because these techniques require a particular unorthodox approach to playing the violin. this will involve creating sound during a way that's otherwise not utilized in any traditional music like retuning the instrument, striking the instrument, or playing the bow during a place it's not meant to be played. So here it's going to not be an honest idea to even come up with an inventory of violin extended techniques for beginners, except for those that know they're looking to play in an unorthodox, contemporary violin style, here is my list of best violin extended techniques to find out .

The first violin extended technique goes to be left pizzicato. this easy technique is employed during a lot of non-traditional music like Sarasate and is especially popular in additional rustic sorts of music than the classical repertoire most violinists are familiar with . To play left pizzicato, simply finger a note with the left , then release the finger suddenly and with enough force to make a sound on the string. do not be too violent, just be vigorous enough to make a pleasant sound otherwise you run the danger of detuning your instrument!

The next violin extended technique is named ponticello. during this technique, we are placing the bow during a new area that we are normally told not to: right by the bridge. The result's a hollow, ghostly sounding bow stroke that's considerably in character with composers like Ysaye. you'll not use this system fairly often , but can practice it as a violin extended technique that's perfect for music like his and lots of other composers within the contemporary era. 

Finally, we've one among the foremost fun yet challenging violin extended techniques referred to as ricochet! this system simply involves throwing the bow at the violin. Obviously it's more complex than that in practice, but here is that the gist of it: on a down bow, throw the top of the bow at the string and depress together with your wrist in order that the bow bounces and creates a ricochet effect. this could sound very rhythmic when done correctly and accurately. Take some time and ask your violin teacher for tips with this violin extended technique because it is extremely easy to mess up!

If you do not have an honest violin teacher, get one! you would like to be taught by someone who knows far more than you are doing alternatively it'll constantly be holding you back. i do know of some good ones and have always had one to assist navigate my progress, and it's always been an important to my growth as a violinist.

first reading update of 2022!

after just barely reaching my goal of reading 69 books last year with a desperate day of airport reading, I'm off to a strong start with 8 books read in January - and lads, there isn't a dud in the bunch.

Monster of the Week (Michael Sands, 2015) - Strixhaven must have done something to me; I guess I read ttrpg manuals cover to cover now? Monster of the Week is a fun and breezy read, offering a super-customizable system to let your friends get up to all sorts of spooky shenanigans. for bonus reading (or listening, I guess) I recommend checking out the Critshow, an actual play show that I started listening to the same day I started reading the book. for folks who learn better by doing than by reading instructions it can be super helpful to listen to the game in action before you try to run it yourself, and the good good lads over at the Critshow really made me fall in love with the potential of MotW's "advancement through failure" mechanics.

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (Ocean Vuong, 2019) - much like Richard Siken and Mitski, Vuong is one of those artists that you see quoted all the time on tumblr in the context of various emotional compilation posts juxtaposing them with countless other vaguely sad things. also like Siken and Mitski, Vuong actually lives up to the hype and then some.

World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments (Aimee Nezhukumatathil, 2020) - an exquisitely long name for an exquisite little book, in which Nezhukumatathil brings attention to some of her favorite plants and animals with short, clever essays. written in poetic prose, Nezhukumatathil extolls the virtue of everything from the smiling axolotl to the surprisingly resilient flamingo to the reeking corpse flower, weaving in her own struggles with being perpetually Othered as a brown woman in America with glittering praises of Earth's astonishing biodiversity.

A Snake Falls to Earth (Darcie Little Badger, 2021) - every time I think I'm pretty much done with YA fantasy I'm proven wrong in the most spectacular fashion. Little Badger weaves a tale of two worlds - that of teenage Nina, a Lipan girl in a world very much like ours being rocked by climate change, and of a snake-person named Oli who lives in a parallel world populated by animal spirits. Nina wants to unlock secrets left behind in a language her family has forgotten; Oli seeks a cure for an ailing friend. both protagonists delight on their own - I'll admit I was extremely partial to Oli's alternating chapters - but really shine when the narrative inevitably brings them crashing together.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (Benjamin Alire Sáenz, 2012) - and again with the YA! I reread Ari and Dante in a single day in anticipation of finally getting my hands on the sequel, and I'm so glad I did. Alire Sáenz's plain but poignant prose goes down like a warm soup or a mug of hot chocolate, always a gentle comfort. I don't want to get too hyperbolic, but I really think this might be one of THE best books about young queer people out there.

Light From Uncommon Stars (Ryka Aoki, 2021) - this book blurbs itself as "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet meets Good Omens," but that doesn't begin to do it justice. this novel displays an absolutely fearless disregard for the constraints of genre, spinning the store of a trans violinist who's run away from home, a legendary violin instructor who makes her students famous in exchange for selling their souls to hell, and an alien mother who's family have fled an intergalactic danger to hide out in an unassuming California doughnut shop. their stories tangle together in soft, surprising ways, and it's taking every ounce of willpower I have not to completely spoil how unbelievably kickass the ending is. did I mention the violin instructor and the alien mom are dating?

Hurts So Good: The Science and Pleasure of Pain on Purpose (Leigh Cowart, 2021) - an introspective and empathetic account that Cowart, who is both a science journalist and sexual masochist, was perhaps uniquely qualified to write. their investigation takes them to such unlikely places as a pepper-eating contest where the champion vomits immediately after victory and a marathon than requires competitors to go several days without rest to Cowart's own childhood suffering the physical torture of dancing ballet. Cowart makes a compelling argument that nearly everyone engages in at least a little intentionally-inflicted pain to, paradoxically, make themselves feel better, and dives into the science of why while also wondering about where, exactly, the line between acceptable and unacceptable self-harm is to be drawn.

Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World (Benjamin Alire Sáenz, 2021) - that crazy son of a bitch, he's done it again! I will be honest with you, beloved readers: this much-awaited sequel isn't quite as good as the original, and nor was it ever going to be. but Alire Sáenz tackles Ari Mendoza's coming of age by taking a much wider scope than he did in the first book, introducing issues ranging from the ongoing AIDS crisis (these books do take place in the late 80s, after all), grief, and racism. Ari also gets to have some great personal coming of age moments - I was particularly moved by Alire Sáenz's determination to expand Ari's group of friends, letting our poor moody boy realize at last that there are people in the world who are happy to love him, if he'll only let them in. it's significantly longer than the first installment, and I do think a little more editing and trimming might have benefitted this book, but at the end of the day I still spent most of the last 100ish pages crying, so who am I to complain?

now - for the pressing matter of the bingo sheet.

I'm off to a pretty strong start! without reusing any titles for more than one space, I still have nonfic (Cowart), a sequel (Alire Sáenz), a debut author (Vuong), an essay collection (Nezhukamatathil), SFF (Aoki), YA or middle reader (Little Badger) and a book that I reread (Alire Sáenz again). at this rate, I could have a bingo by February!

Co-written with @fantismal, this feels like a Magnum Opus, lmao. It's the longest (by FAR) fic I've written, and we got to construct a world from the ground up with complex characters and multiple plots that are cohesive and entertaining and heart-wrenching.

Though the new boy at Hogwarts University, James Potter, appears to be an adorable himbo with deep pockets, Remus Lupin and his friends instead find a horrifically dark past on Google. Did he really attack that boy and leave him for dead? Why won't he talk about his mysterious childhood best friend, "Pups"? Would it kill him to stop messing with his hair?

At least Remus got his phone back after losing it, but now he can't stop texting the mysterious number of the man who had sent it back. Padfoot is funny and charming, and Remus is NOT going to fall in love with him.

2. Lines | Rated E | Wolfstar | 23,533 words, 5 chapters Canon Divergent AU, DILF!Wolfstar at 56.

This was just an exercise in self-indulgent, serotonin-boosting smut. This is the happy ending they deserved, and I adore exploring established, secure relationships.

As if feeling Sirius’s eyes on him -- and maybe he does, Remus just Knows Things sometimes -- he looks over his shoulder with eyes heavy-lidded and sleepy. “We’re far too old to be having morning sex and you know it, Padfoot,” he warns, his voice still gravely and deep from slumber.

3. Smoke Trails | Rated T | Wolfstar | 20,156 words, 6 chapters Get-together fic with 6th-year Marauders, involving misunderstandings, miscommunications, and moonlit confessions.

This was my first chaptered fic without time skips. I wanted to put my idea of how Wolfstar got together out there and show some truly tender moments between them. I'm endlessly proud of this fic, and it won several awards on the Harry Potter Fanfic discord, which is still mind-blowing to me!

Sirius has a surprise planned for Peter's 17th birthday, which has the littlest Marauder ill at ease and Remus on high alert. Muggle cigarettes, fancy lighting tricks, firewhiskey, and late-night confessions lead to spilled truths and hurt feelings.

4. Quintuple Meter | Rated E | Wolfstar | 7,811 words, 5 chapters Non-magical, modern, musicians AU. Remus is a renowned cellist and Sirius is an accomplished pianist.

I wrote this for the Wolfstar Discord's 2021 Wolfstar Bingo under the "Musicians AU" prompt and I wanted to do something other than like, a band fic. This is another self-indulgent write for me because I play the cello (and viola & violin) and have been in love with the instrument since before I really knew its name. Sirius knows magic isn't real—that's the stuff of story books and fevered dreams—but now, watching Remus play, he reconsiders his convictions.

Pianist Sirius Black has worked his entire life for this opportunity and considers himself a master of his craft. Remus Lupin, the most sought-after cellist in Europe, proves him wrong.

5. Silver for Monsters | Rated E | Wolfstar | 18,829, 4/? chapters Witcher AU with Wolf School Witcher Remus and Aen Seidhe Sirius.

I don't even know where to begin explaining myself... I fucking love the Witcher franchise and I was listening to Wolven Storm one day like hmm...yeah, I can make this Wolfstar. I've gone full-throttle into my poetic descriptions and the animosity between Sirius & Remus was/is so fun. It's not finished, I KNOW, but DYMM? delayed it and I'm finally feeling up to writing long things again!

Eyes narrowed to protect against further assault, Remus tracks the origin of the noise to a tree 100 yards away at the edge of the river. Lightning shatters again overhead, illuminating a tall, slender figure perched high on a branch and a flash of teeth -- perfectly white and smooth, no cuspids, before they're lost to the shadow of the leaves and he's left with a tinkling, mocking laugh.

"Gar'ean, Vatt'ghern. Aé ess'neén aen aep taedh aep marw." (Careful, Witcher. You'll catch your death out here.)

He squints to stare at the boughs again, bristling. Elves. What an elf was doing in Hogsmeade, a human village of little renown, was beyond him. Grimacing, Remus reclaims his silver sword from the sticky corpses and stalks over to the drowner nests at the riverside. Two carefully-placed palm-sized bombs later, and Remus retrieves the silver necklaces of the two women who fell prey to the monsters. He’ll try to return them to their families, if they even want them back. Superstitious lot, humans.

Thanks to a High School AU for Rise trending in Twitter, it motivated me to update my OC's profile with more details compared to her previous one. Without further ado, please read on to get to know her more and how she would interact with the Hamato bros!

Nationality: Half-Filipino, half-Japanese

Parents: Kane Hoshino (Japanese) and Gloria Bangon (Filipina)

Occupation: Student

Favourite food: Ramen and amiritsu (when in Japan); halo-halo and nilaga (when in the PH); fried tofu from both sides.

Hobbies: gardening/being around nature, drawing/painting, playing the violin (dancing to it at times), and doing sports.

Language/s: Pre-dominantly English, learned terms in Japanese and Tagalog; articulate in Filipino Sign Language.

Best Friend/s: Mikey and April

Crush: Leo

Short Bio: Born to martial arts practitioner parents – her father a Karate practitioner, Ume is the only child of Kane Hoshino [pronounced as kah-neh] and Gloria Bangon, who both reside in California.

Having father as a kitsune, she inherited powers like sharp senses and the ability to see ghosts and kami (which explains her fear of spirits and avoids horror houses). Much to both parents’ relief however, she didn’t inherit the physical traits of a kitsune.

Info on the Parents: Kane Hoshino is a 400-year-old Kitsune who lived a life of a humble Karate practitioner.

He used to prank on people in his youth, usually on those who he thought deserved to be pranked. This prankster attitude, though something natural to their kind, disappointed his parents greatly. To teach him self-discipline, they allowed him to travel from village to village to give him a taste on living a life of a human – provided he always keeps his family amulet around his neck.

Unbeknownst to him, the amulet contains a seal that can suppress his powers to shapeshift. He only realized it when he tried to transform into someone else to get into an establishment and failed. The discovery frustrated him and went on to live as a human.

Years passed until he decided to return to his parents, just to find out about their unknown deaths. Then and there, he realized how pampered and bratty he was, and his parents sending him away was to help him realize that life is much more than just luxury and pranks. From the news of their deaths, he never removed the amulet as a remembrance from them.

Their deaths took a great toll on him that he fell into alcohol and depression and decided to even take his own life – until his would-be Karate master found him in a public shrine at night before the deed was done. The master cared for him, and in return, Hoshino did his part in the chores and even offered that he could be a housekeeper. Said master accepted the offer.

It took years until Hoshino was given a chance to be trained in Karate, where he excelled and ended up becoming an assistant teacher at the dojo. Years later, Hoshino gained the title of Master and even started his on dojo.

For years, he trained the police force and the military, his reputation increasing. He may have used his powers at times, but only when deemed necessary; otherwise, he relied more on his strength and determination to get through life – and that is what led him to his soon to be wife, Gloria Bangon.

Gloria Bangon is a Filipina instructor who practices Arnis. Born in the Philippines, she lived in a family whose income depends on their teacher father. At a young age, she became invested in learning the national martial art called Arnis. She entered a club for the martial arts during her elementary years all the way to her college years, and even made team varsity. She received her black belt in college, making her one of the youngest practitioners of the martial art.

Out of the three children, Ria (as she was fondly called at home) was the only one interested in the teaching field, while her older siblings found their interests in law and psychology.

After finding their own careers, the older siblings left and lived separate lives, leaving Ria at home to care and provide for their parents. From time to time, they do help in the expenses, as teaching jobs give minimal pay.

This made her decide to go and build her own school in the US, provided she brings them along. It took her years to build her own Arnis school that opened to both kids and adults. This was where she encountered Hoshino.

The two hit it off instantly. While Ria is more fun-loving, Kane was the stricter of the two; but he would play some light jokes on her, which she didn’t seem to mind. But upon finding out the identity of Hoshino, Ria made a promise to never reveal his identity to anyone. He was understandably hesitant at first since the closest human he had been in contact with was his own master who long passed away. Time proved true, and the two became inseparable.

The two married after three years of courtship and decided to reside in California.

First Exposure to the Martial Arts:

Concerned for his daughter’s safety, the fact that she is the only child and in fear that she would end up a rebel like him, Kane made it mandatory that she gets trained in the martial arts for self-defense and discipline. Ume was first introduced to the martial art of Taekwondo at the age of five where she was trained by her mother’s colleague Kwon Myung-Ki. At the age of six, she took up Karate with her father. She achieved two black belts in Taekwondo and Karate at the ages of ten and eleven respectively, making her the youngest martial arts practitioner in her immediate family, Hoshino and Bangon sides.

Still at age eleven, she decided to pursue Arnis under the guidance of her mother. Ume continued with her Arnis training in the present.

Her Sociability:

Due to her conservative and strict upbringing, she didn’t have the time to be with peers, let alone when in training or in school. Curfews were a thing in the family, prompting her to come home almost every time as soon as the bell rings.

This caused her to be aloof, becoming a recluse. This worried her mother greatly and would encourage Ume to interact with kids of her age beyond classes, to the point she would let Ume hang out – provided she comes home before dark. Since she was trained by both parents on how to defend herself, Ria believed that Ume is fine on her own, and expressed immense trust that her daughter would know what’s best in defending others and herself from danger.

Once she did hang out with those who will be mentioned next, she was found to be fun, very kind and empathetic. Though still hesitant, she slowly comes out of her shell, and learned to let go every once in a while, and live an enjoyable life. She's also found to be curious with technology, since she isn't as tech-savvy.

Over time, she eventually becomes more protective over her newfound family outside her own.

Relationships:

April O’Neal

Time is a friend for Ume when it comes to forming friendships. As mentioned, she’s a recluse, so her being hesitant towards new faces is natural, and it would take years to gain her trust. Only very few can capture her heart and earn that trust.

Her first real friend however came in the form of April O’Neal.

The two girls met when Ume went out training Taekwondo in the park with the rest of her class. Their encounter was brief as it involved a ball accidentally hitting Ume at the back, to which April apologized. April did see how hesitant Ume was, and even assured her that she meant what she said, and even asked Ume about Taekwondo. April further explained that she would watch them from time to time as they train in the park and found their classes awesome – a compliment that Ume accepted with a chuckle.

The more the two hung out, the closer they got – and the more protective Ume got of April. Thanks to April, Ume got to enjoy living a youthful and fun life like going to amusement parks and watch movies.

That time though, April never spoke of the Turtles for two reasons, and not one of them is because she didn’t trust Ume. But said two reasons were: (1) to keep the Turtles safe from all humans (at first), and; (2) to keep Ume safe from yokai who are involved with the Turtles.

Likewise, Ume never disclosed of her being a half-kitsune and preferred to keep it that way.

That is, until she met the Hamato brothers.

Hamato Michelangelo

Mikey was the first of the Hamato brothers to meet Ume. Upon meeting April and suddenly noticing that she wasn’t alone Mikey became curious and hesitant towards Ume, who eventually turned defensive and would go in front of April to protect her. After a brief introduction, Mikey was still hesitant towards Ume, as the latter is with him.

Just as it did with April, it took time before Ume warmed up to Mikey to the point they see each other as siblings. Mikey was genuinely thrilled to have another human befriend him and see him as he is, not as a mutant and the two eventually became best of friends. After seeing Ume warm up to his brothers, Mikey became protective of her just as she is with him. She earned brownie points from Mikey when he found out that she loves doing art like he does. What they would do together:

they would sneak out at night -- either to stargaze at the rooftop, have art jams in the park, or to have some midnight slices of pizza

he would paint while she plays for him on her violin

go to art stores for more materials like paint, sketchbooks, and the like

play videogames together during spare time (mostly co-op), or when neither of the older brothers are available

they would take turns cooking/baking for the family, but they have more fun doing those together

create a corner of the lair to themselves and called it the Art Corner and hang out there on non-mission days -- but they encourage others to join!

Hamato Donatello

Second to meet Ume was Donnie, who she encountered while in a sleepover with April. Ume was startled to find out Mikey has an older brother, even more startled when Donnie confirmed for her (albeit reluctantly) that there are four of them. At first, Ume didn’t like how cocky and know-it-all Donnie presented himself to be, just as the latter didn’t fully trust her to the point he creates more inventions to heighten security around the lair in case she’s with the Foot Clan.

Eventually, the two warmed up. While Donnie's interest is in science, Ume's is in the arts. But the meeting that changed their views with one another was when Donnie spotted how curious Ume can be, with her commenting on how genius his inventions were, despite her being not too tech-savvy. She obliviously opened up her insecurities to him and surprisingly in turn [after seeing how genuinely vulnerable she was] allowed him to open up as well. Whenever Donnie felt down, Ume would either make some coffee for him or give him a hug. For someone who’s not welcome to physical touch because of a soft shell (unless it’s with family or April), those warm hugs meant a lot to Donnie. And him allowing an outsider like her to even come as close to hugging him meant how much he trusted her.

What they would do together:

they would sneak out at night -- either to have some midnight slices of pizza, look for some constellations, or sneak into the library

while Donnie is in charge of the blueprints and building, Ume would sometimes suggest other creative solutions to (hopefully) make them better

Ume would gladly give beta-tests for Donnie's inventions

play videogames together during spare time, or when neither of his brothers are around

Since Ume uses rattan sticks for training (similar to the twin katanas for Leo), both of them spar together whenever Donnie didn't feel like sparring with his brother. But they spar for fun and experimentation

they would go to electronics stores (both in the human world and in the Hidden City) and shop for parts for his inventions -- but would stop by Huezo's for a good break

Hamato Leonardo

Ume’s encounter with Leo (third one of the brothers to meet) is the quickest one. The two met by accident when Leo searched for Mikey. As the second eldest of the turtles, it was Leo’s responsibility to make sure that all brothers would be in the lair by nightfall. Leo became concerned that Mikey wasn’t around so, with Splinter’s permission, he went around the sewers to find his brother. He eventually found Mikey walking casually with Ume. Thanks to Donnie’s mentioning that there are four brothers in all, she felt less confrontational with Leo.

Unlike Ume, Leo is more carefree and laidback that at times, he thinks that she’s the exact female counterpart of Donnie. Which he found out later wasn’t the case. When Leo felt down after one mission, he shared to her about his brothers not always trusting him whenever he had a plan or trying to prove a point. Ume admitted to him that she knew what it was like to feel left out, having to cover his insecurities with his confident persona. She knew because she felt the same way with her peers. That made Leo realize that, despite her hanging out with Donnie or Mikey, she and Leo shared more things in common than he thought. Both have a lack of self-confidence, they both have a want to prove that they're always there when their loved ones need them. They both love their families so much so that they would sacrifice their own lives to keep them safe.

What they would do together:

they would sneak out at night -- either to stargaze at the rooftop, watch some movies in the living room while having some midnight slices of pizza, or read comics together -- while having pizza

THEY LOVE SPARRING TOGETHER. Because both of them use similar weapons, it was very fun for both of them. Their sparring would feel more like they're dancing than actually sparring.

they would go to amusement parks and play the games there, and end up resting in the Ferris wheel by the end of the day

if time would allow, they would go watch stage plays together

since Leo loves to dance, he would dance to the beat of Ume's playing. Thanks to Donnie's recording upgrade on her e-violin, she would play her recorded piece and dance with him

they would mostly hang out in Leo's room and dub the latest Jupiter Jim comics together

Hamato Raphael

Most probably the friendliest encounter of the brothers is with Raph. Her interaction with him was more natural and fun. She first met Raph when he decided to talk to Donnie about possible upgrades for their tank. Upon entering the lab, Raph spotted Ume just sitting in a spare stool next to Donnie, handing over the tools. As soon as she spotted Raph, she immediately introduced herself formally, since she knew that Raph is the eldest of the brothers. And being one of the youngest in the family herself, all she could do was be formal with him. Raph found her being formal as nothing short of weirdly adorable. He already knew of her thanks to his brothers having found a new human friend. Instead of being the overprotective or stern one around, he instead welcomed her happily.

Ume looks up to Raph and considered him an older brother figure. Likewise, Raph saw Ume as a younger sibling. Despite Ume being more capable than she lets on, Raph maintained a protective hand on her much to her slight annoyance. Otherwise, Ume knew that Raph meant well being protective of her, a trait she never grew tired of.

What they would do together:

they would sneak out at night -- either to stargaze at the rooftop, or having heart-to-heart talks.

they would search for, and fawn over, cute things on the internet together (as long as it's not Mrs. Cuddles)

they would spar together, when Raph's brothers are not available for training. Next to Splinter, Raph acts as her second teacher, since he's the most serious among the brothers when it comes to training

play videogames together, either for fun or to help keep Raph's mind off of worries

they would watch crime shows together, both latest and old shows

they would clean the shrine dedicated to Karai and the Hamato clan -- a little something that Raph thought of making (after their encounter with the Shredder) for his family if they wish to spend alone time with their ancestor.

What they would ALL do together: (Hamato brothers and April)

sleepovers in the lair -- complete with games, pillow fights and storytelling! (though most likely Ume would be the first to head to bed early)

movie nights

building snowmen, having snowball fights and having a cup of hot chocolate by the end of the day

go to comic-cons together, and buy merch until their wallets slim down

enjoying a good slice of pizza on one of the building rooftops in NYC

they would DEFINITELY play Smash Brothers together! 3 vs 3 -- Raph, Donnie and April vs Leo, Mikey and Ume

go on missions to stop the Foot Clan and other criminals

go out camping in the wild (much to Donnie's dismay)

they would have a fashion montage

watch more Lou Jitsu shows!

I have tickets for both the day as well as the evening performance and am planning to watch them live so as always, I will be posting my initial thoughts and impressions. I wonder if she will have any cool announcements for us today? Maybe a new release? It’s been a while T_T I wish she would land an anime tie-in gig! It would do wonders for her popularity [This post will be updated throughout the day]

1. Yasashisa ni Tsutsumareta Nara: Edit: Oh no, I actually missed this. THANK GOD I have a ticket for the evening performance as well (and there is an archive). Ughhh, why did I mess up the time?! I am stupid. 2. Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa (Day )/Kimi wo Nosete (Night): Phew, I almost missed the start.  Anyways, Wakana looks GORGEOUS. So far I am really liking the piano-violin-cello arrangement, thought it would feel a bit lacking compared to last year’s live but it really doesn’t. Great start!!! I don’t think she sang this in Osaka. MC: Introduction of musicians. 3. Inochi no Namae: *sobs* Was dying to hear this live, it’s so much better than expected. I am blown away. This hits me right in the feels. How is her voice always going straight to my heart??! Goosebumps every single time! 4. Kaze no Toorimichi: Her voice is a bit breathy here, I think she is choosing this style on purpose but I am not a particularly big fan of it. Ahhhh, Loving her “ooooh”s! For the evening portion she changed her singing style a bit so she sounds less breathy. I like it much more this way. 5. Kimi wo Nosete (Day) / Mononoke Hime (Night): I think her performance of Kimi wo Nosete is much better than back in December. Maybe it’s the arrangement which is a tad slower so Wakana isn’t as rushed, not sure. Either way, her vocals are so much stronger here, at least imo. Ah, I see, her night performance setlist seems to be pretty much identical to her Osaka setlist. Makes sense to have Kaze no Toorimichi and Mononoke Hime back to back. perfect combo. Also, so happy I get to hear it again. This is one of the very few old-school anisongs I actually know. And Wakana’s version is to die for!! The arrangement was also breathtaking. MC The first half of her concert is dedicated to Ghibli pieces. The next piece concludes this section. 6. Toki ni wa Mukashi no Hanashi wo: The high parts are flawless here, love them so much. Her “dokoka de” at the end was a bit sudden tho XD INTERMISSION (20 min): She wore the lacey white dress we have already seen in pictures for the first half with her hair down and wavy. For the second half her hair is in an elaborate ponytail and she has changed into a gorgeous blue gown with a sparkling waist belt. So pretty!

7. Rain: Not my favourite cover song of hers but a lovely performance nonetheless 8. When She Loved Me (Day) / Utautai no Ballad (Night): Ahhh, so happy to have this back again. Unfortunately though, this was a bit shaky at times. Liked her version in December better. Will have to rewatch later. Rewatching it right now, my initial reaction was a bit off, Wakana’s performance was actually really good, not sure why I didn’t like it in the beginning. During the evening performance she sang Utautai no Ballad which was beautiful. The arrangement isn’t as epic as the one with 1966 QUARTET but Wakana’s vocals are TOP NOTCH, much better than last year (she ran a bit out of breath back then). 9. Bokura no Natsu no Yume: I suspected she would sing this because it was also part of her Osaka setlist. I listened to the original which didn’t impress me much. Wakana’s version on the other hand is absolutely beautiful, perfect for her voice. Her” whoooo”s towards the end KILLED me! SP FREAKING GOOD!! MC: Talk about the rainy weather. After all, she is the bringer of rain XD 10. Get Wild: Will never get tired of this. Such a perfect song for Wakana, who would’ve thought? Poor baby, I think she stumbled over her lyrics a bit in the beginning. But she recovered quickly. 11. Kimi Wa Taiyo: Another cover I was expecting since it was also part of the Osaka setlist. Everyone is clapping along and having fun. Not a huge fan of the original song or Wakanas version...Wakana is obviously having a blast but meh, she doesn’t sound too good singing this. Already liking this a bit more now that I am listening to it a second time during the evening performance. It will not become my favourite Wakana-cover but it’s actually a lot of fun (similar to Country Road actually). MC: She wants to hold many more lives like this in the future. It’s already time for the final song before the encore. 12. Ai ni Dekiru Koto wa Mada Aru kai: Nailed it. Perfection. EN. 13. Yatsura no Ashioto no Ballad: Wakana is back on stage with Sin. Initially I didn’t really like this song but by now I am honestly in love with it. MC: She wants to think of us all while singing this and brings back all musicians for this final song. EN. 14. Country Road (Day) / Yume no Yukue (Night): Ohhhh, I didn’t expect  Country Road. Thought she would be singing “Yume no Yukue” from her album. Was so sad when last year the live stream didn’t include the encore so we weren’t able to hear Country Road and Magic Moment. So cute!!! I have never actually heard the Japanese version, so far I have only known the original English version but Wakana’s cover was so freaking adorable! Admittedly not her best vocal performance but she more than made up for it with cuteness. Such a feel-good song! During the night performance she did sing Yume no Yukue though (as expected). Always a pleasure to listen to this. MC: Wakana says she didn’t expect so many people to come to her live. Awww, I am so glad lots of fans showed up to support her even during these tough times. She briefly talked about her upcoming Billboard Lives but no new announcements :-(.

Summary: So for the day portion she sang ALL songs of her cover album with the exception of Yume no Yukue. In addition, she performed  Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa, Bokura no Natsu no Yume (Summer Wars), Kimi wa Taiyo (Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror), When She Loved Me (Toy Story 2) and Country Road (Whisper of the Heart). For the evening performance she dropped Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa and sang Mononoke Hime instead. When She Loved Me got replaced with Utautai no Ballad. Just like in Osaka, she finished he concert with Yume no Yukue.

Spiritfarer - fixing ableist content

While Spiritfarer is 100% one of the best games I’ve ever played, there’s something that did irk me a little during my playthroughs : Gustav’s story. He was a museum curator who ended up severly disabled. But at a few points, Gustav talks about his wheelchair and his disability in...less than ideal ways.

Well, apparently a bunch of people brought the issue with Thunderlotus. In September 2020, they released an apology regarding the issue, promising to correct it in future updates.

They eventually released their plans for updates in 2021 : one in the spring, one in summer, and one in fall. And when the first one, the Lily update, came out, the announcement came with this paragraph :

I’ve yet to see what the modifications will be, but I’m very happy to see this. Thunder Lotus made a mistake, and when it was pointed out to them, started working on it by getting more educated about the topic. This is the ideal scenario (besides not making the mistake in the first place) when it comes to this.

Start of Fall 2021

The pandemic certainly did not help in terms of predictability and adjustment. The summer spent in four different states (MA, NY, FL, and PA), working, traveling, has been a wild ride. The novel feeling of beginning the first full year of in-person college as an unfledged upperclassman. The tingling excitement of returning to campus and interacting with classmates and professors outside the 2D rectangular frames. The receding memories of the year lost to the pandemic, online classes and isolation. The ongoing processing of the happenings this summer. Half of the faces of past juniors and graduated seniors that I used to know are replaced by the half-covered faces of first-years and sophomores, more than half of which have never lived on campus. Was it a lost year? I tried not to spend too much time ruminating and instead steered my focus to the present. I am ready to ramble about my classes, the new house, and food. (Maybe I will write about convocation another time...)

Schedule

 This semester I am taking a total of 20 credits. The courses are listed above. My witty comment in the parenthesis does everything but help you understand what each course is about.

EGR 374: Fluid Mechanics (it isn't as formidable as circuits, yet), PHI 124: History of Ancient and Medieval Western Philosophy (I wish I could read in Greek), EGR 388: Photovoltaic and Fuel Cell System Design (Excel is my best friend and worst foe), CHM 312: Polymer Chemistry (rubber bands contract when heated! Hooray entropy), MUS 951: Introduction to Choral Singing (Bring me Little Water Sylvie is my latest earworm), and MUS 930Y-01: Advanced Performance - Violin (It's been long; does my violin remember me?). 

Note that the schedule attached does not include my violin lessons (this year the music department is offering Smith students private performance lessons free of charge), work schedule, extracurriculars.  It is unlikely that I will cover anything beyond course content when it comes to schedules, thus if you want to learn more about Smith faculty, you can check out this website and read their bios.

(tl;dr: I am taking 3 stem classes, 2 music lessons, and 1 philosophy class. Nice decrement by 1, right?)

Abode

In the past two years I have lived in Hubbard, Northrop, Chapin, and Capen. Every year I aim to try something new. Built in 1876, Washburn House is my 2021-2022 pick for two main reasons. 

1. The facilities are most recently renovated.

Washburn is one of the very few houses on campus that has heat exchan-, no, air conditioners (other houses being Cutter/Ziskind and Chapin). With the blessing of the cool summer breeze also comes the curse of never-ending arctic winds. For half a week, I was not able to turn off the AC. Luckily, Smith College has a facilities management team ready to save the day. We enter work orders to submit maintenance requests. Within a day or so, they will email back to indicate the approval status and level of importance which affects how fast they will process your request. More information can be found here. 

Besides the AC issue, Washburn also experienced a house-wide sewage problem (our shiny bathrooms were out of service for a few hours) and the brand new laundry room whose OneCard machine has been broken for 3 weeks already, so we had to use quarters. The opposition of the comfort the new house brings and the trouble its residents have to go through might muse the Greek philosophers. Maybe I should move on to the second reason in favor of the house!

2. The location is impeccable for hardworking students.

From Washburn, it is only about 5 minutes walk to most academic buildings/ libraries. It is flanked by the recently opened new Neilson Library (read this article on NYT about the library and its architect) and Seelye Hall (where I take my philosophy class), with Hillyer Art Library in the front and Alumnae Gym (mind you, it is not a real gym, but an extension of the Neilson Library) in the back. What does this mean? Any direction you go from Washburn, your destination would not lack bookshelves and comfy chairs with footrests. The joy of living on Green Street! 

Feasting

There have been a few updates and downgrades on campus dining this year. Three dining halls are closed until further notice: Wilson, a quad dining hall too far to walk to from Green Street, Northrop/ Gillet, home for vegetarian and vegan dining, Hubbard, the house Julia Child (and I) once lived in and best known for its weekend brunch and morning chocolate croissant. I was particularly saddened by the closing of Hubbard, partly because it used to be my favorite Sunday brunch option (they serve eggs benedict!) and would have been the most convenient food location for Washburn residents. 

But one mustn't be disheartened, for behold, inside Neilson, the birth of Compass Cafe! It isn't just like the pre-existing Campus Center Cafe, but better, for it serves sushi! 8 rolls of freshly cooked rice packed with salmon and other yummies, wrapped in seaweed, will be yours at the donation of one meal swipe only. The menu of other dining halls except Lamont changes every day now like in the old days. My favorite place is Comstock, the DIY-stir-fry house. It provides electric hot stoves, cooking utensils, ingredients, and condiments. You have the autonomy to stir fry however and whatever you desire under the supervision of a dining hall staff.

I realize that though I’ve posted a lot, and though I’ve linked my main account, I’ve ultimately said very little about me. Mainly because I don’t know what people would find interesting - they’re mainly here for my writing after all. Nevertheless since I’ve been so deeply lucky to have people following me, I think I might as well post at least a little about me. So that’s what this is!

General Information

Hello and welcome! I go by many names - mainly because I have trouble making decisions - but you can call me Bern.

As of updating I’m about a month and a half away from being 20, which is not completely terrifying at all.

My pronouns are she/they, and I speak English, though if you can stand the terrible grammar I’m technically bilingual in French, and I also speak a very little German. I am also unable to write concisely.

Writing Things

I’ve put this information all over the place - in my rules, on the main information page, etc. - but I thought I’d just put some stuff here, as I think it also would count as being “About Me.”

I currently write for Genshin Impact, the Ikemen Series, Mystic Messenger, MLQC, and sometimes LotR. I mostly write on request, so those are the main ones, but I have also written for the Witcher on this blog, and Kamisama Kiss if you go farther back (I would not recommend going farther back as the quality is shaky at best).

My writing schedule was trashed, so I’m now just doing the best I can.

Genshin Impact

I’ve currently been messing around with team compositions a lot, but here are the main two teams I’m currently using. 

Hu Tao, Xingiu, Ganyu, Zhongli

Ayaka, Ganyu, Xingqiu, Bennett

My favorite characters in general are Childe, Ningguang, and Scaramouche. Though honestly I love basically all the characters so much it’s hard to pick, and sometimes I go through different phases for runner up favorite. 

My favorite characters in terms of gameplay are Kazuha, Ayaka, and Hu Tao. 

My favorite element types is Cryo or Geo and my favorite weapon type is the polearm; my least favorite is probably the bow, so it’s somewhat ironic that I rely so heavily on Ganyu in my teams, as well as Childe and Fischl.

My playstyle and team comp style is nonexistant. I hit things with the Es and the Ults and hope they disappear. As that might imply I’m hopeless at both physical damage and artifact stats.

I’m stuck on Spiral Abyss Floor 10. This is because I do not use my resin like I should and everything is under leveled.

General Interests, Hobbies, Etc.

I don’t know my MBTI or anything in depth about my zodiac sign, but I would consider myself an introvert. I play the violin and flute, and I also dance, sing, and draw. I generally like the arts. Reading is my great joy in life. I adore Imperial Russian history.

“I go when I want to go,” she growls. She isn’t sure how she feels about Lady Une telling others about her activities. Especially him. She resumes position though.

“Not if you want to win.” Her shoulders stiffen. “Loosen up. Go.”

All Mariemaia wants is to be left alone while she practices her swimming and tries to survive the school year. She doesn’t know why she’s surprised that doesn’t happen - it’s not like the universe has been on her side in the past. Especially when it comes to meddlesome Gundam pilots.

Rolling over hurt. Wufei gave a grunt of sound, body aching even as he forced his eyes open to a ceiling that he didn't recognize. It was white with no embellishments, no gold flake, nothing, and adrenaline hit his bloodstream, forcing him up more quickly than was good for him.

He didn't know where he was. The windows were tall and arched, the walls were a soft blue, and the floor looked to be wood, natural and well-waxed. A chair pulled up to the side of the bed, a pillow and a blanket piled into it, and he could distantly hear classical music.

Wufei wasn't in his room, and he wasn't in any room in the brothel. Wufei wasn't even sure as to precisely when he should start panicking, but the best answer seemed to be any second now.

Following: 387, apparently - w h o a, how'd that happen?? Too many amazing people out there, that's all I'm saying.

Followers: 237, which makes me think of three things immediately: one, there seems to be a sevens theme going on with "follow-" words today. Cool beans! Two, OH MY GOSH PAST TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY FOLLOWERS Already??? Every time I look at this statistic, it's more, and my eyes want to pop out of my head. I mean, I'm SO flattered, guys, but also w t f!!! Ahhhhhhhh, it's more than a little unbelievable. (!!!) Anyway, and, three, hnsjdskhsghsjhd, I'm an awful person, I haven't even completed my Hundred Followers Celebration yet!! Better get right on that 😬🤦‍♀️🥰

Average hours of sleep: 6/7 in work-time, because teaching is a full-time job and I need to be 100% functional. In the holidays, though... yeek. Anybody's guess!! I often go to sleep in the very wee hours of the night (2, 3am) but then I'm also a lazy ass and only get up at 10, so... About the same, actually!!

Lucky number: ehhh, I don't really have one, I'm not superstitious like that, really - EXCEPT, WAIT, NO, I TOTALLY DO. Of course I do!! 42. The answer to life, the universe, and everything, my friends :D

Lucky me, I know, lol 🤣😍 If I could have anything, though, I'd probably want to be an actress, or a singer-songwriter. Or both!! Or, I know, a Marvel screenplay writer for the Quake/Secret Warriors alternate universe spinoff 🤣😝

Dream Trip: ohhhh, MAN, well - I'm an incurable romantic at heart, so, the Seychelles with my boyfriend? Or maybe, to be a fangirl and a romantic (which is just goals, honestly) Tahiti!! Yup, yup, that's my final answer. I want an all-expenses-paid, full-luxury trip to Tahiti - I hear it's a magical place 😝😍🏖️

Top 3 Fictional Universes I’d Like To Live In: The MCU, but very specifically season 3A of Agents of SHIELD, so I could meet all my babies when they were happy(ish) and tell them how much I adore them 🥺🥺💜 Also, the Wizarding World post-the Second Wizarding War (because if I'm living in the world I'm not affected by JKR's crap). And for number three, OOH!! Storybrooke post-season 6 (and happily pretending season 7 never happens.) Yes please!!

Since this is an update and I do know my muse much better after years of playing him, this post is long. I don’t expect you to read through every single thing as a requirement when you want to approach me with a rp offer. But a little skim would be nice, just to get a grasp on the character. I do as much research about the muse of a person I want to rp with as I can and I’d appreciate if it was reciprocated.

Hair colour: dark brown almost black

Hair style: blowout

Eye colour: blood red irises with black background instead of whites, however he often uses glamour to fit in with humans, making his eyes look blue.

Glasses or contact lenses: Reading glasses

Which facial feature is most prominent: jawline

Other distinguishing features: when without glamour it’s his natural eyes and fangs in place of his canines (basically canines but longer)

Skin: tan

Scars: 

one large bite over his left shoulder (halfmoon shape on the front basically   connecting the beginning of his collarbone with his shoulder) the other half  is on his back as if something bit down on his shoulder.

Another one is over his heart – the skin resembles the burnt skin after it healed. Wrinkly and all.

Then there are the small nicks from swords and daggers – but they are not that prominent.
