Movie Rarings - ⭐tars Aasmaan Bharadwaj makes his directorial debut with this gritty and dark tale of crime set in Mumbai. Film boasts of stellar cast with whom his father worked over period of last two decades. Plot And Performances The dark thriller tale is about a few small gangs in Mumbai that take up crime and betrayal out of greed for massive sums of money. There are interesting characters. There is naxal gang, corrupt system and police officers, young couple in love and you know you have your ideal recipe for so called ‘film set in underbelly of crime’ saga. Tabu plays Poonam aka Pami, a police officer who has climbed the stairs of misogyny to now rule the same men who subjected her to it. The place she is in, she calls encountering people ‘masti’ and doesn’t think twice before she kills someone. She is easily the best character and performance of the film. Arjun Kapoor plays a corrupt police officer and on contrary, he is religious and observes fast on Tuesdays. He breaks that fast and worships the god before he takes a gun and butchers an entire party for money. Arjun once again shows his potential as performer and he needs more such meaty roles written for him. Radhika Madan is average, Shardul is decent, Konkana has nothing much to do and Kumud Mishra is routine. Analysis Film has heart and style but what it lacks big time is bark. It doesn’t have punch and no where it really surprises you especially in era of OTT where such content is coming out everyday. Characters work but in isolation and at times, everyone seems too cunning and predictable. DOP Farhad Ahmed Dehlvi disappoints with overuse of handheld and red lights. As writer Aasmaan is strictly average as proceedings get tiring after a point and it lacks menace of ‘Omkara’ or zing of ‘Kaminey’. Film tries to ape these films that’s why it’s necessary to mention. But biggest disappointment is film’s music considering stellar track record of Vishal Bharadwaj. Evolution of a Legend - Part -1

This is an analysis of Leading Actors of the Hindi film in pre-Amitabh Bachchan era and what Amitabh Bachchan brought into the industry.

If we start with the arrivals of the first three superstars ( if we do not consider Ashok Kumar) of the Hindi film industry , Dev Anand , Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor all of who started in the late 40s , we basically remember what they brought in with them –

Dev Anand brought in Style ,fashion and portrayed role of happy-go-lucky flamboyant loveable characters with the assistance of great music. We cannot forget him in “Kaala Pani”,”Paying Guest”, “Tere Ghar Ke Samne”, “Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai”, “Taxi driver” etc. Although later he gave a commendable performance in “Guide” , he mainly focused on care-free happy-go-lucky roles.

Raj Kapoor brought in serious topics into movies – although similar kind of movies had already arrived with Ashok Kumar like “Achhyut Kanya”, “Kismat” etc , Raj Kapoor started directing the movies.His movies had a different form of story telling , very elegant romance and drama. All his movies, be it “Shree 420″,”Anari”,”Aag” ,”Aah",” Mera Naam Joker” etc all had strong and different portrayal of romance. And of course songs were so integral part of the romance. However, he was not very disciplined and always reached very late on the sets.  

Dilip Kumar , the strongest ACTOR of the three, brought in pathos , under-playing character and sophistication. Most of the roles he enacted were played with subtlety , “therao” and so my underpaying. Although he had music , but it was secondary to his acting ability. He could easily mold himself to a villager in films like “Naya Daur” or “Ganga Januma” with proper accent and gestures, royals in “Kohinoor” and “Mughul-E-Azam” , fun in “Ram-aur-Shyam” and intense dramas like “Devdas”, “Aadmi” etc.

After them, there came the next generation of actors – Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar,Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra , Raj Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Sashi Kapoor, Jeetendra from mid-fifties to mid-sixties.

Each of these actors played mainly played light hearted romantic roles in their own styles.

Sunil Dutt was intense and angry (the first angry young man) , who can forget “Mother India”, “Mujhe Jeene Do”,”Insaan Jaag Utha”.

Rajendra Kumar was mainly romantic lead and very dramatic. However , no one can deny his performance in “Gora Aur Kala”.

Manoj Kumar , although did couple of romantic movies like “Patthar Ke Sanam” focused mainly on patriotic movies starting from “Saheed”.

Dharmendra , was mainly a mixture of romance and intensity – “Patthar ke Phool” , “Anupama”, “Satyakam” were fabulous.

Raj Kumar was all dialogues and style – “Waqt”, “Heer Ranjha” , “Neel Kamal”.

Shashi Kapoor , started with a very off-the-path role in “Dharmputra” , did some good romantic movies like “Sharmilee”,”Jab Jab Phool Khile”.

Shammi Kapoor and Jeetendra(called Jumping Jack) initiated dancing ( if we can call them) , with great style and some good music. Who can forget “Caravan” , “Farz” and later Himmatwala,Mawali of Jeetendra . Simliarly Shammi Kapoor gave us huge musical blockbuster like “Teesri Manzil”,”Di Deke Dekho”,”Junglee”.”Janwar” etc.

Next evolved Rajesh Khanna , the so called 1st superstar of Hindi Film Industry with fanatic fanfare and 3 years of all blockbuster movies. He came with style , melodrama and some great great music.He tried with some successful subtle performances with “Anand” , “Amar Prem” , “Aavishkaar”, etc , but he started getting monotonous. His discipline was questionable and he never reaches the sets in time.Also, the sudden success got to his head and he misused it.  

What we know less about these actors are :-

b>    Professionalism

c>     Method acting ( Dilip Kumar stands out)

d>    Compete commitment

e>    Use of Voice

f>     Use of singing ability and lip syncing ( Dev Anand was perfect in lip- syncing)

Amitabh Bachchan came with all of these.

Amitabh Bachchan started in 1969 with “Saat Hindustani” , had only 1 hit movie (thanks to Rajesh Khanna) called Anand and a stray of simultaneous flops till “Zanjeer” (his 13th film) and “Abhimaan” (14th Film) both in 1973 , we see 2 sides of his acting skills – intense, angry no-nonsense in Zanjeer and an intense role in Abhimaan.

However, we should understand how Amitabh Bachchan arrived.

Not going very far into his background, we know that he is the son of legendary Hindi poet Dr Harivash Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan who came from noble family.

His upbringing was a mix of intellectualism and fighting attitude.

He worked for a company in Kolkata for a couple of years and came to Mumbai to be in films.

When he started working in films , he did a film called Pyar Ki Kahani in 1971. There was a scene in the movie where he was to kill the veteran actor Shri OmPrakash ji. After the killing shot , Om Prakashji told the unit that he very surprisingly saw in him British way of method acting and said to all that Amitabh would go very far.

Simliarly, Pran ji also recommended him to film writers Salim-Javed (who wrote films like Andaaz,Hathi Mere Sathi,Zanjeer,Deewar,Sholay,Kala Patther,Trishul,Shakti,Arjun,Mr India,Naam etc) the writer duo ,who went to see him in film Bombay-to-Goa and selected him watching an action scene in the movie.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the legendary film-maker cast him in Guddi (Jaya’s first film – a women oriented movie) saw his talent , removed him from Guddi and cast him with a very powerful role in Anand. Although , Rajesh Khanna took away all the accolades in the movie, Amitabh was recognised and he received his first filmfare award for best supporting actor role. Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Amitabh worked in classics like “ Anand”,”Abhimaan”,”Mili”,”Namak Haram”,”Chupke Chupke”,”Jurmana”,”Bemisaal”,”Alaap”.

During his struggling days, Amitabh had no money and hence, started working even as junior-artist. Sashi Kapoor in those days was acting in a Merchant-Ivory production film called Shakespearwala. Amitabh , to earn his living participated in a crowd sequence( a funeral scene) ,where Sashi Kapoor saw him , called him out and said that such roles were not for him – he should wait and he will get good roles. Sashi Kapoor even edited the scene where Amitabh was present , so that no one even had a glimpse of him.

So even when Amitabh was giving flops one after the other , his talent got noticed.

I miss the era when two superstars of the same generation collided on the big screen. Here are my favourite two-hero films of all time-

KARAN ARJUN(1995)

This film had everything a Bollywood movie could ask for. Romance,Action, Comedy, Drama- it had it all. It was a highly hyped release, since the starcast boasted of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Raakhee,Amrish Puri,Kajol and Mamta Kulkarni. The storyline of the film focused on a desolate mother and her two sons, who get to know about the truth about their father's death and vow to avenge him, but their greedy uncle kills them instead. 20 years later, they get reincarnated to complete the revenge. While Kajol plays SRK's love interest ( of course!), Mamta Kulkarni plays Salman's girlfriend. Salman was easily the surprise package of the film. His intense, brooding role made my day.

KSHATRIYA(1993)

Honestly speaking, a film like this with so many superstars in one frame can't be made today, like can you imagine Dharmendra,Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Meenakshi Shesadri,Raveena Tandon, Divya Bharti, Raakhee, Puneet Issar and Prem Chopra in one movie in today's time? It was also a rare instance where Sunil Dutt and Dharmendra played father to their real life sons. The film is about an age-old enmity between two Kshatriyan families, over a cow sacrifice. They send their sons to foreign lands to keep them safe from their bloody enmity. Both of them end up becoming friends and a problem ensues when they refuse to continue their enmity. All the lead actors, especially Sunny Deol, acted really powerfully.

SUHAAG(1994)

This film was another big-ticket one, since it starred a good lead cast of Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Karisma Kapoor and Nagma. Though it is Ajay who is the main hero, Akshay is more than his sidekick in this film. Karisma and Nagma were more for just romance, though Lolo was the better and the more daring girl. She chased after Ajay's character since she was madly in love with him, and that cinema hall scene was indeed hilarious! The story revolves around Ajay(Devgn)and Raj(Akshay), two best friends who keep on playing pranks on each other and get into trouble regularly. One day, Ajay goes to get his passport made, but he is shocked when he finds out his real name. That night, he sees his mother keeping a Karvachauth and he demands answers. She tells him the whole story of how his father was wrongly framed and was sent to jail. On hearing this, Ajay goes and meets his father in jail and promises to destroy the man who framed him. Raj too joins him in this fight for justice, unaware of the fact that his father too was involved in this.

One of the best comedy films of all time. However, when her father finds out about their relationship, he tells Sameer to go away and never return. Sameer refuses to disobey his master and returns to Italy. Nandini gets married to Vanraj(Ajay) who also loves her. However, she still loves Sameer. Vanraj realizes that the love in Nandini's eyes isn't for him, but for Sameer. So, paying no regard to what people will say to him, he decides to sacrifice his love for her and takes her to Italy to reunite her with Sameer. Will he succeed? Watch the film to find out. It's about Suhaan(Salman) an aspiring actor who lands in a fix when his wife Piya(Preity) divorces him and asks him to pay 50 lakh as alimony. As he asks his uncle, midget lawyer Bonny Singh (Anupam Kher) how to pay, he comes across Agastya Rao(Akshay) an astronaut by profession who came by searching for Piya, since he had a crush on her in their college days. So, to avoid paying alimony, Suhaan decides to help Agastya in wooing Piya. And they travel to New York, where Piya is. However, in this quest Suhaan ends up falling in love with her again. Ek Villain Returns Review: John Abraham-Arjun Kapoor Film Makes Guessing Game Too Predictable

All good sequels have enough of the original to give us a sense of continuity but create enough difference to be able to stand on their own. Filmmaker Mohit Suri attempts to do it with Ek Villain Returns, a sequel to the 2014 sleeper hit Ek Villain, but fails miserably. Here’s a film which is a perfect example of how Bollywood struggles with creating a plot in which every single thread counts.

Ek Villain Retuns kicks in only after the interval, and then it becomes the film it should have been from the get-go. The first half is a waste, even if it tries hard to get the audience invested into the characters who say dialogues which are straight out of ’80s Bollywood.

Apart from being eye-candy, Aarvi (Tara Sutaria) is an upcoming singer, wanting to become famous and become a superstar singer. Gautam Mehra (Arjun Kapoor), a rich spoilt brat, falls for Aarvi and helps in achieving her goal. But wait, has he really fallen in love? At the same time there are a series of murders of young girls who have one-sided lovers, done by an unknown person who wants to become the messiah of boys who have lost in love.

On the other hand, we have Bhairav (John Abraham), a cab driver who falls for Rasika (Disha Patani), a sales girl working in a departmental store. The stories of the four protagonists get intertwined with some interesting twists and plots. So now, it is left up to the audience to decide ki kaun hero aur kaun villain.

Suri is interested in themes of revenge, redemption, and especially in the notion of masculinity. The filmmaker surely has a gift for vivid characterisation, even if some things are underlined a tad too much. He also does a good job with weaving high-octane moments around his characters. But Ek Villain Returns has little room for complexity so this idea is ultimately squandered.

The tone becomes inconsistent. The film’s swinging between drama and melodrama is its weakness. The first film had some interesting songs, especially ‘Teri Galliyan,’ and the song has a new version in the sequel, but it doesn’t really create the same impact. The rest of the songs aren’t even worth mentioning. And then there are dialogues, ��Main hero hoon teri kahaani ka’ or ‘tu hero toh main villain.’ The four leads keep on repeating and playing games of ‘main hero, tu villain’ or ‘tu villain, main hero.’

The twists too in the film are either predictable or far-fetched. One major reveal is given away in the film’s trailer so you can see it coming from a distance. The other is what one would describe as ‘thoda zyada ho gaya.’ The climax, especially the last scene, does pack some punch, but it is, in the end, a case of too little too late.

The film leans on its cast to do what they do best. Abraham, flaunting a chest that refuses to be contained in shirts, gets multiple opportunities to flex his chiseled abs. Sutaria sportingly shows off her perfectly toned figure. Kapoor has some interesting moments but doesn’t really rise above the character. Surprisingly, it is Patani who’s having the most fun.

At 2 hours and 8 minutes, the film isn’t really long. But the absurdity and the ridiculousness in the plot just made the audience in the auditorium so bored that many didn’t even wait for the last scene to get completed and started walking to the nearest exit.

There are some moments that work, but by the end, I remember a dialogue that Abraham’s character, a cab driver keeps on repeating in the film, ‘Rating zaroor dena.’
