Satyajit Ray: A Pioneer in Indian Cinema
One of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century was Satyajit Ray,
an Indian director, screenwriter, and author. His works have made a lasting
impression on the history of global cinema, and he has made enormous
contributions to Indian cinema.
Early Life and Career
On May 2, 1921, Satyajit Ray was born in Kolkata, British India.
His mother, Suprabha Ray, was a vocalist, and his father,
Sukumar Ray, was a writer and poet. Early exposure to l
iterature, music, and the arts helped Ray cultivate a keen
aesthetic sensibility. He continued his education by enrolling
at Presidency College in Calcutta and Visva-Bharati University
in Santiniketan, where he first encountered the writings of
Rabindranath Tagore and other notable figures in Bengali literature.
Ray began working as a visualizer for a British advertising agency
in Calcutta after he finished his education. He spent more than ten
years working there, learning vital filmmaking skills that would later
be useful to him in his work as a director.
Also, he mastered the craft of filmmaking on his own by reading
books and watching movies.
Filmmaking Career
The first film made by Satyajit Ray, Pather Panchali
(Song of the Little Road), based on a book by
Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, launched his
career as a director in 1955. The movie, which
was made on a tight budget with a mostly
unprofessional cast, is about a little child
growing up in rural Bengal. The movie was
a critical and financial hit and earned
numerous international honors, including
the 1956 Cannes Film Festival's Best Human
Documentary Award.
In what became known as the "Apu Trilogy,"
Ray went on to produce two further movies:
Aparajito (The Unvanquished) in 1956 and
Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) in 1959.
The trilogy focuses on the life of Apu, a young
man who matures in India after Independence.
Jalsaghar (The Music Room), released in 1958,
Charulata (The Lonely Wife), Nayak (The Hero),
released in 1966, and Ghare-Baire (The House
and the World), released in 1984, are some of
Ray's other well-known movies. His films gained
notoriety for their realism, lyricism, and meticulousness
. He was also a master of visual narrative, making excellent
use of lighting and camera angles.
In addition to being a filmmaker, Ray was also a writer,
composer, and graphic artist. He published a number of
works, including a Feluda-starring detective novella
collection. Together with designing the posters, he also
created the music for his movie.
Legacy
The impact Satyajit Ray had on Indian cinema is enormous.
His films continue to be praised for their realism, compassion,
and beauty. He is widely considered as the founder of Indian
art cinema. Many modern Indian directors, including Mira Nair,
Deepa Mehta, and Shekhar Kapur, have been influenced by him.
The Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Golden Bear
at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the Academy Honorary
Award for Lifetime Achievement are just a few of the countless
international accolades Ray's movies have received. He received
the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, posthumously in 1992.
A heart attack and other health issues led to Satyajit Ray's
death on April 23, 1992, at the age of 70.Several of his
admirers and coworkers expressed their sorrow at his
passing, which was a major loss to Indian cinema. Ray
made a significant contribution to Indian cinema, and his
works are still praised for their beauty, compassion, and
realism. By his creative output and the impact he has on

Bengali sweet or Odisha snack, no meal in Kolkata is complete without gulping down a pair of Rasgullas.

Amitabh Bachchan: The One Man Industry
Oct 11, 2021 Amitabh Bachchan, the one man industry turned 79 today! Happy Birthday, Sir!🍾🥂
1. Born barely 2 months after Gandhiji launched the Quit India Movement in 1942 against the British, his father, Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan named his newborn 'Inquilaab' ('Revolution'). However, fortunately, when another iconic Hindi poet, Sumitranandan Pant (his Godfather) came to check on the newborn, he suggested the name, ‘Amitabh’ which means 'brilliance unlimited'. How very prophetic…. The newborn’s mother loved this name n the dad simply smiled n nodded his approval!
2. After graduating from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, AB worked for a shipping firm called Bird and Co in Kolkata where he was paid Rs 500. "Kolkata.. Calcutta then.. first job as an executive in Bird and Co... salary Rs 500 per month, after cuts etc Rs 460!!," AB had once tweeted.
3. After a lot of struggle, insults n rude rejections, he finally signed his first film, Saat Hindustani on Feb 15, 1969 which released less than 9 months later on Nov 07, 1969. For his debut film, also his only black-and-white film, he was paid a princely sum of Rs 5,000 for putting in 9 mths work. Not that it mattered. He had arrived…. n ended up winning the first of his 5 National Awards for best actor, the most by any actor in Indian cinema.... in over the past 108 years. The National Award for best actor, arguably the toughest award to win on the planet, given more than a 1,000 plus performances in movies released every year in 🇮🇳 in dozens of languages compete for it. Definitely tougher than even the US Academy Awards!👌🏽👏🏽
4. In 1982, the God of Indian cinema was near fatally injured on sets. Slipped into a coma n the doctors had given up, before he miraculously recovered n was back on the sets within a few months.
5. He suffered from a rare muscular disorder known as myasthenia gravis in the mid-80s. He also suffers from Vitiligo, a condition that causes depigmentation of parts of the skin. One of his kidneys is barely 25% functional, thanks to a bottle of infected blood that was infused into him in 1982. Yet, nearing 80 yrs of age, he still slogs 12 to 14 hrs a day, everyday!
6. He hates the term Bollywood. "I don't like the word, Bollywood. I think it is very demeaning to our Hindi film industry.” He sincerely hopes that a more appropriate term from the rich vocabulary of the Hindi language will be identified, accepted n used to do justice to the Hindi film industry sooner than later.
7. A pure vegetarian👏🏽 Yes, he is. In fact, he has been named the hottest vegetarian celebrity three times in the past by PETA
8. A natural left-hander, eats🍽️, shoots🔫 n punches the goons 👊🏽decisively with his left hand 👌🏽👏🏽👌🏽👏🏽
9. Most astonishingly, he is ambidextrous,- can write with both hands equally well. Apparently, he is fond of collecting pens and has a collection of over 1000 pens!
10. Famous for his godly baritone, most unbelievably, he was once rejected by All India Radio! This, after he had appeared for an audition in the days before the out-of-work young man landed his first film.
11. Ironically even the legendary, evergreen Radio Jockey, Ameen Sayani rejected to meet him, not once, but thrice, when he had come to his office in Radio Ceylon in search for a job on the radio. According to Mr Sayani, he discovered this fact a decade later, when the God of 🇮🇳 Cinema spoke about his struggling days without naming anyone at a Radio Ceylon function, where he was respectfully invited as a Chief Guest. M Sayani doesn’t fail to add, "it was a blessing in disguise that I rejected to meet the young man. Had I met him back then n heard his voice in his audition, I would have hired him immediately n that would have been a disaster for both of us. He would have stopped struggling to become an actor, given his voice, made for broadcasting would have immediately connected with the radio audience n made him a radio superstar…. Indian cinema would have lost a precious jewel of an actor…. n my career would most certainly have been derailed. Thank God, I refused to meet him!😊👍🏽
12. ALL stars across the globe are mediocre actors. They become stars, bcos the audience lust for their looks n not skills. Yes, like all general rules, this one too has one exception,- Amitabh Bachchan, the biggest, heavyweight star EVER, is the only star who is also a brilliant actor!..... and the most decorated ACTOR on the planet and very deservingly so!

Evolution of a Legend - Part -1
Anand”,”Abhim
This is an analysis of Leading Actors of the Hindi film in pre-Amitabh Bachchan era and what Amitabh Bachchan brought into the industry.
If we start with the arrivals of the first three superstars ( if we do not consider Ashok Kumar) of the Hindi film industry , Dev Anand , Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor all of who started in the late 40s , we basically remember what they brought in with them –
Dev Anand brought in Style ,fashion and portrayed role of happy-go-lucky flamboyant loveable characters with the assistance of great music. We cannot forget him in “Kaala Pani”,”Paying Guest”, “Tere Ghar Ke Samne”, “Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai”, “Taxi driver” etc. Although later he gave a commendable performance in “Guide” , he mainly focused on care-free happy-go-lucky roles.
Raj Kapoor brought in serious topics into movies – although similar kind of movies had already arrived with Ashok Kumar like “Achhyut Kanya”, “Kismat” etc , Raj Kapoor started directing the movies. His movies had a different form of story telling , very elegant romance and drama. All his movies, be it “Shree 420″,”Anari”,”Aag” ,”Aah",” Mera Naam Joker” etc all had strong and different portrayal of romance. And of course songs were so integral part of the romance. However, he was not very disciplined and always reached very late on the sets.
Dilip Kumar , the strongest ACTOR of the three, brought in pathos , under-playing character and sophistication. Most of the roles he enacted were played with subtlety , “therao” and so my underpaying. Although he had music , but it was secondary to his acting ability. He could easily mold himself to a villager in films like “Naya Daur” or “Ganga Januma” with proper accent and gestures, royals in “Kohinoor” and “Mughul-E-Azam” , fun in “Ram-aur-Shyam” and intense dramas like “Devdas”, “Aadmi” etc.
After them, there came the next generation of actors – Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar,Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra , Raj Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Sashi Kapoor, Jeetendra from mid-fifties to mid-sixties.
Each of these actors played mainly played light hearted romantic roles in their own styles.
Sunil Dutt was intense and angry (the first angry young man) , who can forget “Mother India”, “Mujhe Jeene Do”,”Insaan Jaag Utha”.
Rajendra Kumar was mainly romantic lead and very dramatic. However , no one can deny his performance in “Gora Aur Kala”.
Manoj Kumar , although did couple of romantic movies like “Patthar Ke Sanam” focused mainly on patriotic movies starting from “Saheed”.
Dharmendra , was mainly a mixture of romance and intensity – “Patthar ke Phool” , “Anupama”, “Satyakam” were fabulous.
Raj Kumar was all dialogues and style – “Waqt”, “Heer Ranjha” , “Neel Kamal”.
Shashi Kapoor , started with a very off-the-path role in “Dharmputra” , did some good romantic movies like “Sharmilee”,”Jab Jab Phool Khile”.
Shammi Kapoor and Jeetendra(called Jumping Jack) initiated dancing ( if we can call them) , with great style and some good music. Who can forget “Caravan” , “Farz” and later Himmatwala,Mawali of Jeetendra . Simliarly Shammi Kapoor gave us huge musical blockbuster like “Teesri Manzil”,”Di Deke Dekho”,”Junglee”.”Janwar” etc.
Next evolved Rajesh Khanna , the so called 1st superstar of Hindi Film Industry with fanatic fanfare and 3 years of all blockbuster movies. He came with style , melodrama and some great great music. He tried with some successful subtle performances with “Anand” , “Amar Prem” , “Aavishkaar”, etc , but he started getting monotonous. His discipline was questionable and he never reaches the sets in time. Also, the sudden success got to his head and he misused it.
What we know less about these actors are :-
a>    Discipline
b>    Professionalism
c>     Method acting ( Dilip Kumar stands out)
d>    Compete commitment
e>    Use of Voice
f>     Use of singing ability and lip syncing ( Dev Anand was perfect in lip- syncing)
g>    Dance
Amitabh Bachchan came with all of these.
Amitabh Bachchan started in 1969 with “Saat Hindustani” , had only 1 hit movie (thanks to Rajesh Khanna) called Anand and a stray of simultaneous flops till “Zanjeer” (his 13th film) and “Abhimaan” (14th Film) both in 1973 , we see 2 sides of his acting skills – intense, angry no-nonsense in Zanjeer and an intense role in Abhimaan.
However, we should understand how Amitabh Bachchan arrived.
Not going very far into his background, we know that he is the son of legendary Hindi poet Dr Harivash Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan who came from noble family.
His upbringing was a mix of intellectualism and fighting attitude.
He worked for a company in Kolkata for a couple of years and came to Mumbai to be in films.
When he started working in films , he did a film called Pyar Ki Kahani in 1971. There was a scene in the movie where he was to kill the veteran actor Shri OmPrakash ji. After the killing shot , Om Prakashji told the unit that he very surprisingly saw in him British way of method acting and said to all that Amitabh would go very far.
Simliarly, Pran ji also recommended him to film writers Salim-Javed (who wrote films like Andaaz,Hathi Mere Sathi,Zanjeer,Deewar,Sholay,Kala Patther,Trishul,Shakti,Arjun,Mr India,Naam etc) the writer duo ,who went to see him in film Bombay-to-Goa and selected him watching an action scene in the movie.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the legendary film-maker cast him in Guddi (Jaya’s first film – a women oriented movie) saw his talent , removed him from Guddi and cast him with a very powerful role in Anand. Although , Rajesh Khanna took away all the accolades in the movie, Amitabh was recognised and he received his first filmfare award for best supporting actor role. Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Amitabh worked in classics like “ Anand”,”Abhimaan”,”Mili”,”Namak Haram”,”Chupke Chupke”,”Jurmana”,”Bemisaal”,”Alaap”.
During his struggling days, Amitabh had no money and hence, started working even as junior-artist. Sashi Kapoor in those days was acting in a Merchant-Ivory production film called Shakespearwala. Amitabh , to earn his living participated in a crowd sequence( a funeral scene) ,where Sashi Kapoor saw him , called him out and said that such roles were not for him – he should wait and he will get good roles. Sashi Kapoor even edited the scene where Amitabh was present , so that no one even had a glimpse of him.
So even when Amitabh was giving flops one after the other , his talent got noticed.
