[ad_1]  The musical superhit film directed by Nasir Husain featured Asha Parekh, Jeetendra, and Aruna Irani completed 50 years on 5th Nov 2021 and was a super hit in India. You would be surprised to note that it was a super-duper hit in China when it was released eight years after its Indian release. In fact, Caravan, believe it or not, sold 19 million tickets in India – and 100 million tickets in China! One hundred million broke all records in China for a foreign film. One of the earliest Indian films to earn the big bucks in Chinese domestic markets was Raj Kapoor's 1951 Indian classic Awara. released in 1955.Caravan‘s amazing success in China was matched only thirty years later by Nasir Husain's nephew, Amir Khan with his 3 Idiots. The movie’s storyline was nothing great. A runaway heiress joins a passing caravan of gypsies, to escape the villain who murdered her father, then falls in love with the leading man, who eventually rescues her from the villain, etc, etc. The film's plot was loosely inspired by the 1953 film Girl on the Run, a little-known crime drama set against the backdrop of a carnival burlesque show, which was changed to a gypsy show in Caravan.Aruna Irani has a significant role in this film. The traveling troupe featured Madan Puri as the manager and a young Aruna Irani as the star performer Nisha. In fact, Irani nearly stole the show from the film’s heroine with her animated performances in the songs 'Chadhti Jawaani Meri Chaal Mastani', 'Dilbar Dil Se Pyaare' and ‘Ab Joh Mile Hain Toh’.The screenplay of the film was provided by Bhowmick, but the treatment of the film was all Husain, who turned it into the entertainer that it was. According to the film's star Asha Parekh in her biography The Hit Girl, Caravan happened accidentally. The highlight of the film was its music, composed by R D Burman, and lyrics by Mazrooh Sultanpuri. In Caravan, there was a song for every mood. There was the soft romantic duet ‘Kitna Pyaara Waada’, the road song ‘Goriya Kahaan Tera Desh Re’, the goofy performance number ‘Daiya Yeh Main Kahaan Aa Phasi’, and, of course, the most famous of them all, the cabaret track, ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja’ picturized on Helen, which brought singer Asha Bhosle her third Filmfare award for Best Female Playback Singer.Even after 50 years, the film is still refreshing, if you have not seen the film,i recommend you to see it today. If you liked this Blog, you would also appreciate my Youtube Channel, link is given belowhttps://youtu.be/ZEnEKZcyPjI[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEnEKZcyPjI[/embed][embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbXhA0iZrlw[/embed][embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdOWDrvOt-A[/embed]All Songs of Caravan [ad_2] Source link

Kalyanji Virji Shah (Kalyanji-Anandji): 92nd Birth Anniversary 30 June 1928-24 August 2000
From sleeve notes written for SaReGaMa’s LEGENDS CD set in 2009: More than half a century after the cobra swayed to the clavioline, masquerading as the been, in ‘Tan dole mera man dole’, its notes still reverberate across India, and in many other parts of the world. It was, and remains, Kalyanji Virji Shah’s best-known musical signature. Kalyanji had first used the instrument in a film called Naag Panchami (1953, music Chitragupta), but that went largely un-noticed. ‘Tan dole’, a Hemant Kumar tune from a box-office hit, was the chart-topper of 1954, so listeners took good notice of its mesmerising been theme. Developed in France by a designer named Constant Martin, the clavioline was introduced in 1947. Five years later, musician Kalyanji was playing it here, in India, in film song takes. Four years after Nagin, Kalyanji had arrived as music director, with Samrat Chandragupta. And the following year, younger brother Anandji, who was a child actor and chorus singer too, joined him to create the K-A team that stood firm for over 40 years. Nevertheless, as Anandji, some four years younger (now 88), is often heard saying, “Kalyanjibhai is watching all this from above. He is very much with us in spirit.” Kalyanji Virji Shah died in the year 2000, at the age of 72.
Born in Kundrodi village of the Mundra taluka in Kutchh, the brothers grew up in Mumbai, where their father ran a food-grain store. Inclined more towards music than academics, they developed the self-taught ability to play a host of instruments, and formed part of school bands. By 1944-45, the teenager siblings had started playing in film song recordings. Big brother set up his own band in 1950, calling it Kalyanji and Party, with Purshottam Upadhyaya singing ‘Too mera chaand maen teree chaandnee’, the super-hit Naushad tune from Dillagi, to thunderous encores. The band performed in Bombay and in other nearby towns. For a while, the businessman in him did surface, and Kalyanji started a tailoring shop in partnership with a friend. Destiny, however, ensured that the shop did not prosper, drawing Kalyanji even closer to a world where a needle was something that played a gramophone record, not a device to stitch clothes with.
Many of us have heard the popular tunes the brothers composed for films like Samrat Chandragupta, Bedard Zamana Kya Jane, Chhalia and Bluff Master, the last two being the earliest directorial forays of director Manmohan Desai, but few would be aware that it was producer Subhash Desai, Manmohan’s brother, who gave Kalyanji his music directorial his break. Impressed with his prowess at song recordings of various recognised composers, Subhash saw a competent future music director in Kalyanji, and made him an offer that was strange, but nevertheless one that he could not refuse. Would he agree to a contract offering him 11 film assignments as music director, with a fee of Rs. 5,000 for the first film, Rs. 10,000 for the second…a recurring Rs. 5,000 increment per film, non-negotiable? The offer was too good to resist, so Kalyanji agreed, but he did ask Subhash, “Why11 films? Why not 10? Or 12?” The reply was convincing, “Eleven is my lucky number.” As it transpired, they did not do 11 films together, but Kalyanji’s career choice was made.
The K-A success story begins with Kalyanji’s kingly debut, Samrat Chandragupta. ‘Chahe paas ho’ is a touching lyric, with a tinge of sadness, as is the next number, ‘Door kahin tu chal’, another Rafi-Lata duet, from Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane, both penned by Bharat Vyas. With a title like Madari, there had to be a snake-charmer and his been in play, and the theme track, penned by Faruk Kaiser and rendered by Lata and Mukesh, indeed provided flashbacks of the legendary Kalyanji patent. Soon after he wrote his first song for them in Chandrasena, Gulshan Bawra penned a real gem in Satta Bazar, and this time the brothers invited their mentor Hemant Kumar to join Lata in the recording room, with amazing results. Who can forget ‘Tumhe yaad hoga’? Not yet the He Man he was to become in his later years, Dharmendra in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere was emoting to Mukesh’s emotion-charged playback, rendering Shamim Jaipuri’s rich poetry. Graduating from smaller set-ups into a Raj Kapoor vehicle, K-A hit big time in Chhalia. Nonsensical verse from a sensible writer, Qamar Jalalabadi, ‘Dum dum diga diga’, with Mukesh providing playback to Raj’s on-screen antics, set the aisles afire.
Soon, they were signed to compose for Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath, a Shashi Kapoor starrer, and Bluff Master. Both films enjoyed reasonable success and the music went around too. In Bluff Master, we find the rare phenomenon of four voices being used for the same actor: Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Shamshad Begum (Shammi Kapoor in drag) and Rafi. It was Rafi who immortalised ‘Govinda ala re’ and sang the duet ‘Husn chala kuchh aisi chal’ with Lata. Anand Bakhshi wrote inspired lyrics for Phool Bane Angaare, and Mukesh, as usual, delivered them with consummate artistry. By 1964, K-A were in the Premier League. That very year, they came up with such melodious tracks as the lilting ‘Humsafar mere humsafar’ (Purnima), where they teamed up with Gulzar, a rarity, and the two Mukesh solos from Ji Chahta Hai and Himalaya Ki God Mein. The former was written by Majrooh, not a K-A regular. Another infrequent teaming worked very well, as Hasrat Jaipuri wrote and Rafi sang in great style, ‘Dil beqarar sa hai’ (Ji Chahta Hai). Melodious, hummable and catchy. A ghazal on Shammi Kapoor with Bakhshi writing and Rafi singing may not be a common occurrence, but just savour ‘Teri zulfen pareshan’ (Preet Na Jane Reet). Staying with Mukesh on Shashi, after MLMH, the duo came up with a moody duet in Juari, ‘Humsafar ab yeh safar kat jayega’. If there was still any doubt about the standing of the duo in the rankings, Jab Jab Phool Khile laid to rest all criticism. Every track was heard everywhere. The songs had it all: pathos, fun, longing, depression, pep. For both K-A and Anand Bakhshi, the success of JJPK was to remain a milestone forever.
Rafi provided playback for debutant Rajesh Khanna in the theme song of his debut vehicle, Raaz, re-uniting K-A with Shamim Jaipuri, producing haunting results. Indeevar’s lyrics sang of cruel fate in Dil Ne Pukara, and who better to voice them than Mukesh, as ‘Waqt karta jo wafa’. In the same vein was the Suhag Raat lament, ‘Khush raho’. Manna De came in to give playback for Pran in Upkar and Zanjeer, rendering two of his most acclaimed numbers. It took the duo 19 hours to record ‘Mere desh ki dharti’, the patriotic anthem of Upkar. Saraswatichandra, based on a literary classic, needed the linguistic mastery of Indeevar to weave in the songs, and the author of ‘Kasme vaade pyar vafa’ made it count. Filmfare awarded the duo for the best music of the year. It was still pristine K-A, full of melody, working with Lata and Mukesh. Another award followed some years later, for Kora Kagaz, which had a pathos-laden title-track in the voice of Kishore. Not many might realise, but K-A used Kishore Kumar for the first time in the 1968 film Suhag Raat, singing a sad song, a full decade after the duo had started their career. A comic song was rendered by Manna De while Mukesh was called-upon to put across the other sad lyric.
Only Rafi could have set swinging mood for Shashi Kapoor to gyrate on screen in ‘Nain milakar chaen churana’ (Aamne Saamne). Rafi for Shashi it was again in Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati and Raja Saab. Part of the female vocals in Raja Saab came from Suman Kalyanpur. Suman had sung for K-A in MLMH and JJPK too, and was to partner Manhar in his first hit number in Vishwas. Giving Hemlata her break in the same film, K-A paired her with good-old friend Mukesh. Soon, the duo was to show its preference for rotating the strike, training and honing a host of budding singing talent, while reverting to the established names with equal regularity. Like a lot of extremely popular Mahendra-Manoj Kumar, Kishore-Amitabh Bachchan and Kishore-Rajesh Khanna outings. Incidentally, K-A took three days to record the back-ground score of Suhaag Raat, while they needed a whole month for Purab Aur Paschim. For the ‘Om jai Jagdeesh Hare’ bhajan of PAP, the composers used 50 chorus singers to get the effect normally created by violins. They called it human resonance. Delay (natural echo) was the highlight of ‘Mere mitwa’ (Geet). The child-like double speed of ‘Na sun sun sun bura’ (Priya) was simply achieved by recording on spool-tape at a particular speed and playing it back at double the speed. Most of their work was done at the Famous, Tardeo, recording studio.
There is Rafi, and not Kishore, for Rajesh Khanna, oozing sensuality as only he could, in Chhoti Bahu: ‘Yeh raat hai pyasi pyasi’, echoing musician hero Rajendra Kumar’s heart-rending call in Geet and charting a romantic route for Dharmendra in Kab Kyon Aur Kahan? He also offers love lessons in Upaasna; in the Haath Ki Safai duet, he makes a solemn promise of eternal love; and he goes on Dilip Kumar for the intoxicating ‘Peete peete’ duet with Asha Bhosle in Bairaag. As Western as it gets is the rare title chorus ‘Pretty pretty Priya’ (Priya) and as Sanskritised as it can get is the Kishore hilarity ‘Priye praneshwari’ (Hum Tum Aur Woh). Kalyanji-Anandji made Shatrughan Sinha sing in Kashmakash, Amitabh Bachchan in Laawaris and Anil Kapoor in Chameli Ki Shaadi. They also gave ample opportunities to the emerging talent of 70s’ generation, as you can sample on the Shailendra Singh, Suresh Wadkar, Anwar, Alka Yagnik and Kanchan tracks.
Known for their hundreds of stage performances, in India and abroad, both brothers also enjoyed a sturdy reputation as funsters, with a joke for every occasion and a keen sense of self-deprecating humour. They once famously described themselves as medical practitioners. “We offer all lines of treatment. If some producer approaches us with symptoms that demand a classical approach, we recommend the Ayurvedic style of medicine: Slow, but efficacious in the long-term. On the other hand, if some film-maker wants to experiment with the musical score of his film, we suggest Homoeopathic type of tunes: May work, may not. Some element of risk is involved. If, however, he wants the juke-boxes to jingle and listeners to start singing along instantaneously, we churn out Allopathic compositions: Like injections, they have instant, strong effect, but the effect may wear out sooner.” Music, along with laughter, is the best medicine known to mankind. Kalyanji-Anandji have already issued a statutory warning to your troubles to keep away, for there’s no place for them, ‘Mere angne men tumhara kya kaam hae?’

Weather, Dove, Friendship Bracelets, Record Player, Hot Cocoa, Valentine, Succulent, Bath Bomb, Brown Sugar, Velvet, Cupcake ;3c 💕💕💕💕💕
of course you’re here to make me feel better, you beautiful cinnamon roll. I love you infinity. The answers are a tad long, so I’ll be kind and keep them under the cut.
Weather - What do you love most?
I don’t think any one person could pinpoint the thing they love the most. It’s an accumulation of little things I think. Gentle music in a summertime breeze as it kisses your skin. The smell of rain and freshly baked bread. A gentle hug and fingers running through hair. Forehead kisses and unspoken words of safety and love. I love a lot of little things.
Dove - How do you express love?
With everything I have. I’m the giving and nurturing type of person when I show my love for anyone. I express it through physical touch - hair strokes, back rubs, hand holding. I express it through care - baking cookies, small dinners, a piece of art, a gentle night in with a favourite movie. I express it through writing. I express it in any and every way I can. Because I want all those who love me, to feel the same amount of love as they give me.
Friendship Bracelet - What does friendship mean to you?
Understanding a person in every moment. To see their most horrendous, vile, angry side and holding a hand out to them, never abandoning. Seeing their weak, vulnerable, selfless side and being the pillar they need until they can walk, never leaving. To support them through their happiness, with eyes sparkling about a topic, or laughter due to a meme, or when they sprout a new leaf from healing from what has happened; always nurturing. Letting that person grow, and being so full of pride of their smallest to their biggest achievements. If you are able to love and support those who have done the same for you - those friendships are priceless.
Record Player - Love songs or breakup songs?
I have far too many of both, but I’ll list as many as I can think of:
Ocean Eyes; I love you; Everything I wanted - Billie EilishDil Hi Toh Hai, Channa Mereya, Hawayein - PritamBolna, Humdard, Agar Tum Saath Ho, Kabira (Encore) - Arijit SinghPreet; Din Shagna Da; Kho Gaye Hum Kahan - Jasleen RoyalSever - Hilary WoodsTruth Hurts - LizzoYou Are the Reason - Calum Scott (Duet Vers.)Sucker; What a Man Gotta Do - Jonas BrothersSuncity - KhalidMy Love, My Life, Mamma Mia - Mamma Mia! Here We Go AgainProof; Last Hope; Still into You; The Only Exception - ParamoreAasmaa - Asha BhosleRequiem on Water - Imperial MammothMy Love - SiaNew Light - John MayerAll I Want - KodalineHome - RainaI Will Spend My Whole Life Loving You - Imaginary Future & Kina GrannisFalling For You - The Light the HeatTo Build a Home - The Cinematic Orchestra & Patrick WatsonI Don’t Love You - Urban Zakapa& about a million or so more.
Hot Cocoa - Three things you love about yourself?
I have the patience for all types of humans and that is one of the greatest assets I have as a person.
That I try, even if it’s scary.
My hair lately, makes me happy. It’s bright and a lot of people like it.
Valentine - Do you like pda?
I do, but in small amounts. I like seeing people in love but other times it does make me a little cynical or bitter due but I think that’s normal.
Succulent - What are you looking forward to?
My surgery! I want to get better and not be in pain every day.
Bath bomb - What is the best form of self care?
I think it’s different for every person. I try and get something warm - like tea, a chai latte or hot chocolate. I’ll listen to some music that’s a little happier in lyric or watch a studio ghibli movie, because that, to me, is the healer of all healing. Studio Ghibli films make you want to live again.
Brown Sugar - What is making your heart warm today?
I stared at this question for a while. I had a pretty bad mental breakdown yesterday and it usually takes me a day or two to recover. I suppose the thing that has been making my heart warm is that we have a blue tongue lizard living on our property. He roams the backyard and front yard. Yesterday he was chilling right at our doorstep! He’s lovely in colour and I talked to it for a while. I saw him nibbling on some apple slices I left him this morning.
Velvet - What is your style?
I guess generous. I am generous in every which way I can be. Yes, there are a lot of cons to that, but it’s just in my nature. I like being as nurturing as I can be, as caring as I can be. I give all projects 110% and just.. try. In terms of clothing though, I try to go for florals or something cute.
Cupcake - Are you in love?
Always. Partner or no partner, I am always in love with something.

Kishore Kumar and Shankar Jaikishen- Hysteria that did not coincide
Courtesy  http://arghyatext.blogspot.com/2012/07/18-songs-in-first-13-years-and-then-87.html
No song in the first 8 years of mutual co-existance in the music kingdom ,18 songs in the next 13 years of association and then, 87 songs in last 17 years: the association of Shankar Jaikishen with Kishore Kumar has various interesting aspects. Another intriguing part is, for the first 13 years, SJ were the uncrowned king of Hindi film music and Kishore Kumar a non-considerate in playback singing and in the next 17 years, well, almost vice versa. “Almost” is because Jaikishen- the more prominent of the duo, died in 1971, and upto 1986, Shankar single handedly kept the S-J flag flying. As the musical parallelism goes, many still believe, it was Jaikishen with whom the camaraderie of Kishore would have blended better- and the proof was there with “Zindagi ek safar hai suhana”, the chartbuster Jaikishen had made with Kishore just months after the former passed away. But the fact is, out of 105 songs Kishore recorded under SJ baton, almost 70 songs came for Shankar only, owing to Jaikishen’s early demise.
Kishore Kumar with Asha Bhosle and Jaikishen
Alongwith Rafi-R D Burman and Asha Bhosle-Ravi, Kishore Kumar-Shankar Jaikishen combo has been highly neglected in Hindi film music history, perhaps owing to the reason that the fan groups of the MD and the singer never formed a common set. With their clear cut preference to the trio of Rafi-Mukesh-Manna, Shankar Jaikishen ruled the film fraternity in the 1960s. They could be cult and traditional with equal ease, insisted on heavy orchestration, composed for the poster boys of Hindi cinema and maintained super Public Relations where their counterparts like Madan Mohan, O P Nayyar or S D Burman were not the experts at. They did not want to look beyond their comfort set of singers right from the very beginning in 1949. It is therefore, you will find hardly any association of them with Hemant, Talat, Geeta or Shamshad right from the 50s through the 60s, except for occasional masterpieces(Ae mere dil kahin aur chal or Yaad kiya dil ne kaha ho tum). So high was the S-J mania that time they managed to compose as many as 7 films for Dev Anand(Patita, Love Marriage, Jab pyar kisise hota hai, Roop ki rani choron ka raja, Asli Naqli, Duniya, Pyar Mohabbat)- a hero who never wanted any MD except S D Burman even outside his home production. So, for Kishore Kumar, his association with S-J was confined within the films where he was the hero himself. All the movies they worked together between 1956 and 1969 were mainly with Kishore Kumar as the protagonist- New Delhi, Begunaah, Shararat, Krorepati and Rangoli. So fascinated were the SJ with the trio of R-M-M, that except for in New Delhi, in all the other films they created space for each of the singers to playback for Kishore. Manna De played back only twice for Kishore- both the occasions came under SJ- Begunaah and Krorepati. Rafi played back for Kishore in Shararat- a movie where Kishore played a double role. There were two movies in that period where SJ did use Kishore for playback- one in Duniya(1968), a duet with Asha Bhosle on Dev Anand and one in Bhai Bahen(1969), again a duet with Manna De on a character artist. With Aradhana released in 1969 and the equation changing a bit, S-J started using Kishore sporadically in movies like Umang and Tum haseen main jawan, still sticking mainly to their comfortable “trio” and making some space for the newly arrived sensation. By 1971, the producers started having their say on Kishore Kumar on the MDs. SJ, always known to abide by the industry trends, started suddenly using Kishore lot more. Kishore Kumar had by then, continued his popularity run with chartbusters in 1970 like Kati Patang, Johny Mera Naam, Sacha Jhutha, Safar, Pavitra Papi, Prem Pujari and Aan Milo Sajna. A force too huge to be ignored by now, Shankar turned on to Kishore for a piano solo in Laal Patthar. “Geet gata hoon main, gungunata hoon main” had Kishore responding to S-J just the way they would have wanted. Alongwith Rafi, Kishore had that elasticity to deliver just the way a MD wanted and not sticking to his own singing gambit. S-J used Kishore in the title track of a Shammi Kapoor starrer in the same year. “Jaane Anjaane”, an otherwise forgettable album, is best remembered today for Manna De’s “Chham chham baaje re payaliya” and Kishore’s “Jaane anjaane log mile”. In Andaaz, the unthinkable happened- with only one single solo in the whole film, Kishore’s “Zindagi ek safar hai suhana” overshadowed all the other songs in the album, including the versions of the same song by Asha and Rafi.S-J, in a spree to check the continuous popularity of younger R D Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal and older and rejuvenated S D Burman post-Aradhana, started signing movies one after the another in 1971. They had 17 releases in 1971, much more than what RD and SD had done, and almost as good as what LP had done. That was the good part, the bad part was except Andaaz, all the other movies bombed at the box office. Duniya kya jaane, Seema, Ek naari ek brahmachari, Albela, Jawan Mohabbat, Pagla kahin ka came and went. In spite of great songs, Lal Patthar and Mera Naam Joker failed at box office. Jaane Anjaane, Kal aaj aur kal received lukewarm response. Andaaz was the only day-saver, that too thanks to only one superhit. Interestingly, SJ used Kishore in almost all their movies in 1971, except for 2-3 Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor movies. They had four releases of Shammi Kapoor that year, and none faring well, also gave a hint at the star’s declining product life cycle.Kal aaj aur kal was a RK production launching Raj Kapoor’s son Randhir Kapoor. S-J decided to put Kishore Kumar as the voice of young Randhir and made him croon the evergreen beauty “Bhanwre ki gunjan”. Interesting to note that, although the media hypes a lot over Kishore’s association with Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan and Dev Anand, it was Randhir Kapoor for whom, in terms of percentage, Kishore Kumar had played back the most. Except for Jeet(1972) and Humrahi(1974), Kishore played back for Randhir Kapoor in all the other movies of the hero- an outstanding achievement between an actor and a singer.Jaikishen passed away in 1971 owing to liver cirrhosis. With Shailendra already gone in 1966, Shankar was left alone to carry forward the glorious torch of the past. With already a declining trend in popularity, SJ held intact only one thing- the Filmfare Awards. They received it in 1970 and 1971 winning over the albums of SD,RD,LP and KA with many eyebrows raised. In 1972, a year truly belonging to Rahul Dev Burman, with mesmerizing albums like Mere Jeevan Sathi, Amar Prem, Parichay, Jawani Deewani, Hare rama hare Krishna and Bombay to Goa, SJ managed to win the Filmfare Award again for Beimaan under lot of controversies. SJ used Kishore Kumar again in almost all their movies except Aan Baan(1972)- a Rajendra Kumar starrer, where they decided to stick to their old gun, Rafi. Kishore delivered his job, giving hits under any circumstances, with “Tum kitni khubsoorat ho”(Jungle mein mangal), “ Saath mein pyara saathi”(Dil Daulat Duniya) and “Aankhon aankhon mein baat hone do”(Aankhon aankhon mein).

The next decade saw gradual decline of Shankar amongst mainstream cinema. After giving music to almost 350 movies, the exhaustion showed. With no Jaikishen, Shankar tried to put his foothold intact with occasional hits in Resham Ki Dori(1974), Sanyasi(1975) and Do Jhoot(1975). Many of Shankar’s hits that time came with Kishore like “Chhatri na khol”(Do Jhoot), “Mere dil mein tu hi tu hai”(International Crook), “Chamka paseena”(Resham ki Dori) and “Tu jahan main wahan”(Garm khoon). Both Shankar and Kishore demised in 1987. While one was given a superstar farewell, the other went away quietly. Quite contradicting to the fact that once, in the 60s, Shankar had actually told in an interview that some songs were not singer Kishore’s “cup of tea”. That time, he was the superstar in music and Kishore was obscure. Time changes fast. But, the fact remains that Shankar Jaikishen were amongst the greatest music directors in Indian Cinema and Kishore Kumar was one of the greatest playback singers. Although their peak periods don’t match, in spite of being contemporaries, they did give us some brilliant output together. Here are my top 10:
Nakhrewali- New Delhi(1956).
Chhotisi yeh duniya- Rangoli(1962).
Rangoli sajaao-Rangoli(1962).
Humlog hai aese deewane- Umang(1970).
Geet gata hoon main- Laal Patthar(1971).
Jaane anjaane log mile- Jaane Anjaane(1971).
Bhanwre ki gunjan-Kal aaj aur kal(1971).
Zindagi ek safar hai suhana-Andaaz(1971).
Saath mein pyara saathi-Dil Daulat Duniya(1972).
Kehta hai dil o mere sanam-Chorni(1980).

Indian Idol Reloaded Concert in Birmingham
Tumblr media
Indian Idol Season 10 (the Indian version of the Pop Idol) format aired in July 2018 and it was the best series ever! The winner Salman Ali was crowned in December later that year and I believe he has an outstanding voice.
I was ecstatic that the finalists were coming to perform live in Birmingham and the concert was titled ‘Indian Idol Reloaded’. The show was taking place at the International Convention Centre on the 13th of April 2019, a not be missed event in my option. This contestants during the competition were extremely talented and it was going to be my first musical concert I was attending. The artists who were performing at the musical extravaganza included Ankush Bharadwaj, Salman Ali, Neelanjana Ray and Nitin Kumar.
It was the day of the show and as you can imagine, I was super excited! I went to the event with my dad by car and it was beautiful summer’s day which made the journey even more pleasant. We arrived at the ICC, Birmingham and it was a fantastic looking building from the inside which was also wheelchair accessible. Brilliant! We were then escorted to the auditorium and to our seats by staff who were all suited and booted which made me feel like a VIP.
The lights went out and the show was about to begin with Ankush Bharadwaj gracing the Birmingham stage. The audience screamed and went crazy and he performed to the song “Aaj Mausam Bada Beimaan Hai” (“Today the weather is very seductive”). He sang the romantic track brilliantly and everyone was singing along and I just knew it was going to be an unforgettable evening of music and entertainment. The second song Ankush sang was “Dard-e-Dil, Dard-e-Jigar Dil Mein Jagaya Aapne” (“You awakened the pain in my heart”). I loved this song as he put his own style to it. Following from this Ankush Bharadwaj sang “Chahoonga Main Tujhe Saanjh Sawere” (“I will love you from morning till evening”). This was a wonderful performance as Ankush sang with great passion and conviction and I was truly blown away. Another amazing performance followed to the song “O Meri Mehbooba” (“Oh my Beloved”) originally sung by Mohammad Rafi. This was yet again a fabulous version of the song and the talented singer was grooving along with the audience which was great to see.
My all-time favourite songs of Ankush’s performance were “Badan Pe Sitaare Lapete Hue” (“With stars wrapped around your body”) and “Yamma, Yamma” from the movie Shaan (Pride). These were both electrifying performances, the atmosphere and musicians were absolutely brilliant! It was an out of this world experience!
Neelanjana Ray was the next finalist to entertain the Birmingham crowd with her sensational voice. Neelanjana made her entrance on to the stage and received a fantastic reception from myself as I am a huge fan and from the crowd. It amazes me that at the tender age of 15 how she manages to reach those high notes so effortlessly and still delivers a fantastic performance. Her opening song was “Dil Cheez Kya Hai Aap Meri Jaan Lijiye” (Forget my heart, take my life instead”). This is one of those all-time classic songs and Neelanjana gave a mind-blowing performance and she was looking cool as always! This was swiftly followed by another romantic song “EK Pyar Ka Nagma Hai” (“It is a song of love”). It was a beautiful performance because it was packed with emotion and I could listen to her all day. Amazing! Neelanjana dedicated the next song for the love and affection she received from the audience of Birmingham. It was “Bahut Pyar Karte Hain Tumko Sanam” (“I love you so much, my love”).Wow, what an outstanding interpretation, I would have given her a standing ovation! If I could stand up.
Tumblr media
Neelanjana’s inspiration has always been Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar therefore she performed a tribute in the form of a medley to Asha Ji. The songs included “Duniya Mein, Logo Ko” (“In the world, people”), “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” (“Lover, you just come now)” and the most popular song “Dum Maro Dum” (“Puff, take a puff!”). It was a world -class performance and she truly got the party started as the atmosphere went to another level, it was unbelievable. I must also commend the band and the backing vocals as they were absolutely superb in supporting Neelanjana. Ankush also dueted with Neelanjana and two of my favourite songs were “Jaane Ja Dhoondta Phir Raha” (“Oh lover, I am seeing you”) and “Suraj Hua Madham” (“The sun has stopped glowing”). It was a rocking and energizing performance and they both quite literally took my breath away!
Salman Ali and Nitin Kumar where the final two stars to wow and perform for the West Midlands audience. The excitement level of the audience skyrocketed and they were filming their entrance as they made their way on to the stage. During this moment they were dancing and jumping to the song “Aaja Tenu Akhiyan Udeek Diyan “(“My eyes are looking for you”) and they sounded amazing! together.
Nitin also performed a solo routine where he sang a medley of songs and his punchlines of jokes in between were hilarious! Mainly based on the fact that his English was not good and I must say his comic timings were brilliant! My favourite songs of Nitin’s performance were “Parda Ho Parda” (“There’s a veil”) and my dad wheeled me to the front of stage. Where everyone was dancing and singing along also trying to get his attention to shake hands with him. My perseverance finally paid off as during a very short pause in the song, Nitin Kumar shook my hand twice! I was overjoyed with happiness and unknown to me at the time the photographers captured the moment which I shall never forget!
Tumblr media
We were returning to our seats and the CEO of Angel Events Ltd noticed me and shook both of our hands. I thought this was a great gesture as I have always believed that it is good to meet new people and create new contacts. I had contacted him previously about purchasing accessible tickets and writing a blog post for this event.
I also enjoyed the fantastic medley featuring the songs “Mere Sapno Ki Rani” (“The queen of my dreams”) and “Tere Deewane” (“I have become crazy, mad for you”). He sounded awesome and it was a jaw-dropping performance. The audience were also treated to chart topping Punjabi numbers which included “Morni Banke” (“Walking like a peacock”) and “High Rated Gabru” (“High rated young man”). The atmosphere was extraordinary and not forgetting to mention the Dhol (Drum) player and the band who supported Nitin so brilliantly.
Tumblr media
Salman Ali was back on stage to perform for the amazing and very lively audience of Birmingham for one last time. He sang some of my favourite songs whilst playing the piano they included “Tum Hi Ho” (“You are the one”) and “Gulabi Aankhein” (Rosy eyes). I enjoyed the performance as Salman was absolutely amazing on the piano and the contemporary feel he added to the songs. Salman Ali also sang “Mere Rashke Qamar” (“O my envy of the Moon”) and his performance was magnificent and the band were also exceptional!
The excitement continued after the show as I was given the opportunity by Angel Events Ltd to meet and greet the stars. I could not believe my luck that I was just moments away from meeting my idol Neelanjana Ray and the rest of the equally talented stars. The big moment had arrived and it was my turn to meet and greet the stars and have a photograph taken with them.
Tumblr media
I was wheeled into position by my dad and placed next to Neelanjana and I was absolutely thrilled to meet her in person. I spoke to her and begun by saying “I am your biggest fan and I have come especially to see you and I have watched all your episodes”. Neelanjana replied and said “Thank you very much”. All the remaining stars then shook my hand and then gathered around me. All of the stars were saying “Look into the Camera” including the photographers and it felt like I was a superstar just like them. One of the greatest moments of my life was then captured. I then said “Good luck to Neelanjana” and she replied “Thank you”.
Tumblr media
Absolutely incredible, an unforgettable evening which has created lasting memories and was a treat for my eyes and ears!
