Backstory:

Rose grew up in Naples, Italy with her younger brother, Matteo “Matt” and elder sister Gabriela “Gabi”when Rose was merely fifteen years old, she lost her mother due to breast cancer. Their father, Lorenzo Del Rossi, a traveling business consultant, isn’t consistent in their children’s lives. So, after their mother’s passing, he sends Rose and her siblings to live with her aunt and uncle in Toronto, Canada. Her cousin is Marco Del Rossi, who’s become an English professor at University of Toronto.

She later attends Degrassi community school.

Rosalina helps out part time at her aunt’s floral shop in town, Louisa’s, a couple businesses down from Novak’s Convenience Store.

It’s her third week of work (and summer vacation), she encounters a lonely boy clad in black and leather during a thunderstorm. Straddled at his side is a dark green duffel bag. He smells like he hasn’t showered in a while, and from the looks of it his weight is damn near a pile of bones. Rose, remembering her lunch, ( leftover dinner from the previous night), heats up her lunch and gives it to the boy outside. Initially a little eerie around her, he accepts her generosity and gratefully eats the food.

The next day she sees him again in the same spot.

It’s blazing outside, he is sweating off a storm. Pitying him yet again, Rose gives him a cold bottle of water. Seeing this girl yet again, they formally introduce each other. She learns that his name is Zig Novak and that his parents own the convenience store by the floral shop. He is quick to discover her family owns the florist shop. She asks about the duffel bag, but for the sake of his own safety (as well as hers), he refuses to answer any more of her questions.

Another day later, Rose looks for him at the post, but is disheartened when she doesn’t find him there. With her little brother at NASA Camp, Gabi preparing for college, and her aunt and uncle away on a mini vacation, she was thrilled to have found someone to talk to. She decides to leave a note along with some food again there in hopes of him coming back.

Meanwhile, one of her first clients by the name of Hollingsworth, meticulously puts in an order for blue and white bouquets for a Mayoral Campaign Party. Through her aunt, she learns that the Hollingsworth practically reigns of royalty due to Miles Hollingsworth II’s success in politics and business. A part of Rose’s job consists of her having to deliver floral arrangements on her bicycle. She delivers the bouquets and is entranced by the Hollingsworth mansion– it’s nothing like she’s ever seen before. While delivering the bouquets, she meets Miles Hollingsworth the III: the eldest, rebellious son of the mayor. Since Diana Hollingsworth is sponsoring Aunt Louisa’s floral shop, Miles shows Rose around the mansion. She also encounters Winston Chu, Miles’ best compadre.

While hanging out at the Hollingsworth palace, Rose humiliates herself by dropping a bottle of whiskey off a balcony, disrupting Miles’ father’s campaign speech. The little confrontation is enough to agitate him, as a result he goes off on his son. Angered by his father’s lament towards him, Miles rebels and cannonballs into the pool. Rose, ashamed of herself for causing unnecessary chaos for a family she’s barely met, retrieves a towel from the pool house for Miles. Their last encounter, Rose goes home, discovering her note and food for Zig has vanished.

For the rest of the summer, she supplies Zig with food, but still has yet to see him. It isn’t until she starts her first year at Degrassi, she crosses paths with him again as well as Miles. Throughout the course of the school year, she attracts new friends and even an arch rival, Zoe Rivas, the ex star off the hit series West Drive. Due to an incensed argument between the two girls, Rose is unfairly sent to the remedial class, coined as the “rubber room”, where she finally encounters the Novak boy again. Only this time, he’s hostile and blunt in their interactions together.

While spending some time with Miles, a relationship blossoms between the two, cultivating Zoe’s animosity towards Rose. Eventually, while caravanning upon her own self discovery, she finds out Zig is homeless. Albeit, the two don’t have as much of a history, she finds herself immensely caring for the leather clad Novak and offers him a place to stay. (With her aunt and uncle’s consent, of course.)

Living at the Del Rossi residence garners a whole lot of problems for Rose, specifically being hung up between two boys. Raveled in a love triangle, Rose is forced to choose between Miles and Zig, but a fateful decision could hurt the other.

6/3/22-Petersfield Heath Pond

We came here for the second time today after a visit last June, as a key bird we saw back then were loads of Egyptian Geese, a bird we were yet to see this year. It was a Mediterranean start as we heard the dulcet tone of a Mediterranean Gull or gulls calling as we arrived, a brilliant spring time bird which we are also yet to see this year. As a gull flock flew over I wondered if I had then seen one but in the end I just couldn’t get enough on it to see if it was that or Black-headed Gull. It was a floral start too as I noticed some pretty green alkanet in the undergrowth of the car park a flower I enjoy seeing which I took the first picture in this photoset of with my macro lens alongside possible purple deadnettle. Cleavers was another nice plant to see on an enjoyable wide walk round the pond and heath and I enjoyed noticing some more scarlet elf cup a mushroom I am enjoying seeing a lot lately in the woody area near to the car park later in the walk which was nice.

Soon into the walk we were delighted to see the exotic colours of some Egyptian Geese, firstly two as it seems not as many are around lately to what we saw here last summer but we then saw five all together when walking round. It was brilliant to get so close to and see these stunning birds, some great intimate views and time to admire this species. As my bogey bird last year not seeing one until earlier last June before the visit here at Fishlake Meadows before seeing them at other places last year as it went on too it felt really good to see one this year after a bit of a wait again. As my second year tick this weekend which I am pleased about it took my bird year list to 132, competing well with the highest amounts of birds I had seen at this stage in past years and with some of my best year lists still as the joint second highest amount of birds I have ever seen at this stage in a year. I took the fourth and fifth pictures in this photoset among others of these gorgeous birds today.

The walk was a great one for seeing waterbirds, with five Common Gulls seen well most in distinctive winter plumage with their cute faces a key bird for such a habitat stars of five gull species encountered today. I took the seventh picture in this photoset of a Common Gull and Black-headed Gulls on the island with them. It was a really good day for intimate encounters with water birds species with Coot as the third picture in this photoset shows, Greylag Goose and Mute Swan including one flapping nicely seen too. Mallard and Canada Geese were both strong birds seen too with some hybrid forms of them both including some interesting larger Mallards and striking white ones perhaps an expected feature of an urban area. Where in a key breeding season moment when here last I saw my first Mute Swan cygnets of last year, today at the other end of the season I saw my first nest of the year with a Coot sat on which was very exciting.

There was so much beauty to behold at this strong habitat in an urban area nestled in the stunning South Downs with some brilliant hill views from here. Pockets of in flower gorse, pink blossom as shown in the sixth picture I took today in this photoset, lichen and nice trees generally added to the landscape well with nice sky scenes throughout and fantastic bursts of sunshine with glimmers of light over the water which turned sweetly blue. So great to be out in today. I took the second and final three pictures in this photoset of nice views here today. 

I saw one of my birds of the weekend Kestrel on the way from the car having seen a few of them this weekend, and Farlington Marshes, Portsdown Hill and the River Hamble from the motorway among other areas looked stunning from the car in the strong sunshine with shimmering water on the way home. I enjoyed viburnum on another plant to the one I’ve taken a few photos of so far this year and budds and blossom on the tree out the back at home before coming out today. With also as we watched a football match enjoying a charming sunny end to the day with everything draped in the light with nice views out the front and back with a little bit of red at sunset as things cleared and a brilliant view of the building crescent moon again tonight. A lovely weekend.

Wildlife Sightings Summary: My first Egyptian Geese of the year, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose, Mute Swan, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Coot, Moorhen, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Cormorant well, House Sparrow, Robin, a lovely Grey Wagtail seen well, Woodpigeon, Jackdaw, Magpie, Carrion Crow well and we heard Mediterranean Gull.

This is in fen 1 of the complex, the interpretative/public fen.

This time of year many fens are still full of life/ where floral display in Ohio seems relentless, a true patchwork of forbes and sedges well imbricated into a never ending mosaic of biodiversity. 

During this time of year the Canada Anemone,  Anemone canadensis, more or less, can be found blanketing fens and wet meadows.  In restoration projects this May- June transitional species is an interesting one as many know, it’s a 2-6 year germinator, a ground cover species in newer mesic prairies/ fens/ and restored wetlands, that if sewed into an existing 10+ year project can imbricate well, just like we see above in this remnant. Recreating this habitat is ideal in a sense but this texture soup you see here is beyond the regular bounds of what we would claim as a diverse site and is impossible to recreate or even get close to. As a species that claims wetland status, it germinates after a cold wet 60 degree days a warm wet 60 degree days and a solid 60 cold wet degree days with decent sun exposure the 2nd year, or it will lie dormant until cycled conditions are met to break dormancy. In cold water restoration sites, like previously found fens that have been taken over by invasive until restoration projects open them up to light, seeds have the potential to be cold enough to remain dormant and unrotten for years before finally reappearing on the site.

As a May-June transitional species, this, along with spiderworts, common fox glove beard lads, Elder, and many rose species are critical for nectar sources when not much else is blooming and readily available. 

Due to this reason above, Right now I am planning on collecting seeds from a small stretch along the Little Miami where a seep community has occurred to introduce local ecotype to well established sections of the Cincinnati Zoo’s wetland restoration site. As well as scouting for potential sites to collect seed in the future legally. 

Their are two other common Thimble Weeds in this section of the midwest, 

One tall upland species that are more associated with dry uphill open oak hickory forests, open flat woods, certain drier riparian sections, and savanna but are not limited to just these sites as they are ruderal. Anemone virginiana, is tall with wedged lobes that overlap a bit, very showy tepals. 

Anemone cylindrica, a barren, and dry prairie species found in open space with much taller plants on average, it’s inflorescence reminds me of a satellite dish. The lobes are not wedged, instead appear just sinused.

Portland, Oregon. Earth. (February 16, 2022)- Portland’s Ecliptic Brewing has partnered with Seattle’s Reuben’s Brews to collaborate on a beer, launching at the end of February. Ecliptic + Reuben’s CRI-STAR IPA is a mashup of Ecliptic Starburst IPA and Rueben’s Crikey IPA, as part of Ecliptic’s Cosmic Collaboration Series, coming in 16-ounce can four-packs and draft. 

Ecliptic Starburst IPA is the company’s flagship IPA, while Crikey IPA is Reuben’s first ever American IPA, and also their flagship. Cri-Star IPA – whose name plays on the two original beer names - features Simcoe, Mosaic, Amarillo, Azacca, Centennial, and Citra hops. Tropical notes, along with citrus and pine, round out this 6.8% brew.  

Ecliptic’s Owner and Brewmaster, John Harris, says, “We have had a lot of fun with this beer. When Adam (Reuben’s Co-Owner) and I were brainstorming ideas, we thought, why not celebrate our two most popular beers? And we started working out a recipe for a mashup of the two.” Ecliptic’s design agency, Sasquatch, worked up an out-of-this-world label for the beer, too, which features astronauts covered in green octopus tentacles, drawing inspiration from Reuben’s fun mural artwork featured at their taprooms and on their website.  

Ecliptic + Reuben’s Cri-Star IPA will be released on February 23rd in both draft and 16-ounce cans throughout Ecliptic Brewing’s distribution network. A release event is planned for March 8th at Reuben’s Taproom in Seattle, as well as in Portland at both of Ecliptic’s locations on March 16th. Novice teacher in need of change seeks it in new community

Will she be welcomed?

Will she fit in?

Will she find what she needs?  

And how will the community react deal with this new person from away?

 Filled with community, culture, and so much more – this story drew me in, made me care, and hope for happy endings for more than one character in the story.

 What I liked:

* The setting – having never been to Newfoundland it felt as if I was making the trip with the main character.

* The writing: skillful, friendly, descriptive and immersive.

* Rachel O’Brien: newly graduated, early twenties, grieving, modern, giving, good friend, caring, kind, immersed in a new culture, grows a LOT during the story, someone I admire.

* Doug Bishop: teacher of science and phys ed, probationary teacher, from Little Cover, loving son, caring, kind, intelligent, intriguing.

* Lucille, Biddy and the rest of the hookers – wonderful, caring, giving, creative, strong, community minded women that provide social and emotional support for one another (and others)

 The battered sign came into view as my car crested a hill on the gravel road. Only 389 people? Damn. I pulled over and got out of the car, inhaling the moist air. Empty boats tilted against the wind in the bay below. A big church dominated the valley, beside which squatted a low, red building, its windows dark, like a row of rotten teeth. This was likely St. Jude’s, where tomorrow I would begin my teaching career.

“You lost?”

I whirled around. A gaunt man, about sixty, straddled a bike beside me. He wore denim overalls and his white hair was combed neatly back from his forehead.

“Car broke down?” he continued.

“No,” I said. “I’m just … ” My voice trailed off. I could hardly confide my second thoughts to this stranger. “…admiring the view.”

He looked past me at the flinty mist now spilling across the bay. A soft rain began to fall, causing my carefully straightened hair to twist and curl like a mass of dark slugs.

“Might want to save that for a fine day,” he said. His accent was strong, but lilting. “It’s right mauzy today.”

“Mossy?”

“Mauzy.” He gestured at the air around him. Then he folded his arms across his chest and gave me a once-over. “Now then,” he said. “What’s a young one like you doing out this way?”

“I’m not that young,” I shot back. “I’m the new French teacher out here.”

A smile softened his wrinkled face. “Down from Canada, hey?”

As far as I knew, Newfoundland was still part of Canada, but I nodded.

“Phonse Flynn,” he said, holding out a callused hand. “I’m the janitor over to St. Jude’s.”

“Rachel,” I said. “Rachel O’Brien.”

“I knows you’re staying with Lucille,” he said. “I’ll show you where she’s at.”

With an agility that belied his age, he dismounted and gently lowered his bike to the ground. Then he pointed across the bay. “Lucille’s place is over there, luh.”

Above a sagging wharf, I saw a path that cut through the rocky landscape towards a smattering of houses. I’d been intrigued at the prospect of a boarding house; it sounded Dickensian. Now I was uneasy. What if it was awful?

“What about your bike?” I asked, as Phonse was now standing by the passenger-side door of my car.

“Ah, sure it’s grand here,” he said. “I’ll come back for it by and by.”

“Aren’t you going to lock it?”

I thought of all the orphaned bike wheels locked to racks in Toronto, their frames long since ripped away. Jake had been livid when his racing bike was stolen. Not that I was thinking about Jake. I absolutely was not.

“No need to lock anything ’round here,” said Phonse.

I fumbled with my car keys, embarrassed to have locked the car from habit.

“Need some help?”

“The lock’s a bit stiff,” I said. “I’ll get used to it.”

Phonse waited while I jiggled in vain. Then he walked around and held out his hand. I gave him the key, he stuck it in and the knob on the inside of the car door popped up immediately.

“Handyman, see,” he said. “Wants a bit of oil, I allows. But like I said, no need to lock ’er. Anyway, with that colour, who’d steal it?” I had purchased the car over the phone, partly for its price, partly for its colour. Green had been Dad’s favourite colour, and when the salesman said mountain green, I’d imagined a dark, verdant shade. Instead, with its scattered rust garnishes, the car looked like a bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Still, it would fit right in. I eyeballed the houses as we drove along: garish orange, lime green, blinding yellow. Maybe there had been a sale on paint.

As we passed the church, Phonse blessed himself, fingers moving from forehead to chest, then on to each shoulder. I kept both hands firmly on the steering wheel.

“Where’s the main part of Little Cove?” I asked.

“You’re looking at it.”

There was nothing but a gas station and a takeout called MJ’s, where a clump of teenagers was gathered outside, smoking. A tall, dark-haired boy pointed at my car and they all turned to stare. A girl in a lumber jacket raised her hand. I waved back before I realized she was giving me the finger. Embarrassed, I peeked sideways at Phonse. If he’d noticed, he didn’t let on.

Although Phonse was passenger to my driver, I found myself thinking of Matthew Cuthbert driving Anne Shirley through Avonlea en route to Green Gables. Not that I’d be assigning romantic names to these landmarks. Anne’s “Snow Queen” cherry tree and “Lake of Shining Waters” were nowhere to be seen. It was more like Stunted Fir Tree and Sea of Grey Mist. And I wasn’t a complete orphan; it merely felt that way.

At the top of a hill, Phonse pointed to a narrow dirt driveway on the right. “In there, luh.”

I parked in front of a small violet house encircled by a crooked wooden fence. A rusty oil tank leaned into the house, as if seeking shelter. When I got out, my nose wrinkled at the fishy smell. Phonse joined me at the back of the car and reached into the trunk for my suitcases.

“Gentle Jaysus in the garden,” he grunted. “What have you got in here at all? Bricks?” He lurched ahead of me towards the house, refusing my offer of help.

The contents of my suitcases had to last me the entire year; now I was second-guessing my choices. My swimsuit and goggles? I wouldn’t be doing lengths in the ocean. I looked at the mud clinging to my sneakers and regretted the suede dress boots nestled in tissue paper. But I knew some of my decisions had been right: a raincoat, my portable cassette player, stacks of homemade tapes, my hair straighteners and a slew of books.

When Phonse reached the door, he pushed it open, calling, “Lucille? I got the new teacher here. I expect she’s wore out from the journey.” As he heaved my bags inside, a stout woman in a floral apron and slippers appeared: Lucille Hanrahan, my boarding house lady.

“Phonse, my son, bring them bags upstairs for me now,” she said.

I said I would take them but Lucille shooed me into the hall, practically flapping her tea towel at me. “No, girl,” she said. “You must be dropping, all the way down from Canada. Let’s get some grub in you before you goes over to the school to see Mr. Donovan.”

Patrick Donovan, the school principal, had interviewed me over the phone. I was eager to meet him.

“Oh, did he call?” I asked.

“No.”

Lucille smoothed her apron over her belly, then called up the stairs to ask Phonse if he wanted a cup of tea. There was a slow beat of heavy boots coming down. “I’ll not stop this time,” said Phonse. “But Lucille, that fence needs seeing to.”

Lucille batted her hand at him. “Go way with you,” she said. “It’s been falling down these twenty years or more.” But as she showed him out, they talked about possible repairs, the two of them standing outside, pointing and gesturing, oblivious to the falling rain.

A lump of mud fell from my sneaker, and I sat down on the bottom step to remove my shoes. When Lucille returned, she grabbed the pair, clacked them together outside the door to remove the remaining mud, then lined them up beside a pair of sturdy ankle boots.

I followed her down the hall to the kitchen, counting the curlers that dotted her head, pink outposts in a field of black and grey.

“Sit down over there, luh,” she said, gesturing towards a table and chairs shoved against the back window. I winced at her voice; it sounded like the classic two-pack-a-day rasp.

The fog had thickened, so nothing was visible outside; it was like watching static on TV. There were scattered cigarette burns on the vinyl tablecloth and worn patches on the linoleum floor. A religious calendar hung on the wall, a big red circle around today’s date. September’s pin-up was Mary, her veil the exact colour of Lucille’s house. I was deep in Catholic territory, all right. I hoped I could still pass for one.

Three Days ~ 71

~*~Emma~*~

For the rest of the trip, we relaxed listening to music. Before Sebastian had asked, I’d not thought too much about what I was going to do. Further limiting my time was a given, but I hadn’t thought about what that would look like. Talking about not waking up at “home” with my mom, dad, twin sister, and niece should have bothered me more than it did. That it didn’t, tells me it’s the right decision. One of the side effects of putting up with shit too long is once you decide to stop it’s not that big of a deal. Something inside has been moving in that direction for some time. What Sebastian had said about not sacrificing myself was on target. That I would do what it takes to take care of my sister isn’t in question. It’s been proven.

I texted Angie from the Uber to Sebastian's apartment. We were going to start up at Chelsea and Union Square with Aritzia, Anthropologie, and Free People. Those were sure thing stores, but not always original. We'd weave our way through Chelsea and into Soho. That shop Seb and I found would be last. We'd stop for lunch when we got hungry.

Angie hopped on the subway and headed to Union Square. It would take her thirty minutes and me fifteen from Sebastian’s place. Plenty of time to relax and watch Sebastian gather what he needed to work on. I saw a script, notebook, and a couple of real books. I think I'd find it fascinating to watch his process, but more importantly this time I wanted him to know I had friends and could amuse myself. I didn't care that he needed work time and I wasn’t going to need something from him for ignoring me. Doing things independent of your partner was important.

I grabbed a bottle of water for my journey and made my way to where Sebastian sat. He moved the items in his lap, making room for me to sit down. He supported my back and rubbed along my leg. "What are you shopping for?"

"Whatever I find." I smiled sneakily, "Especially if find something for Paris, our first date, and our live music fun tonight."

Sebastian’s hand made it to my ass, "When I think of live music I picture short, revealing, sexy."

"I love how you think." I ran my fingers through his hair. "Can I bother you for five minutes?"

"Sure" His eyes held questions.

I pulled his head closer, pressing my lips to his until he caught on and joined in the fun.

Our little mini make out session was going to make me late. Assuming Angie left as soon as we texted, walked straight onto a train, and there were no delays. None of these were likely. She'd forgive my lateness anyway. I looped my crossbody bag over my head, "I'll text if it's anything other than seven."

"Ok." He ran toward the kitchen. "Hang on." I heard a drawer slam before he reversed direction and came back. Sebastian held up a key, the slightest smile appearing on his face, "In case I'm in the shower or something when you come back. You remember the code?"

"Yes." I'd punched it in when we got here less than half an hour ago. He was nervous. I admit I had to focus to keep my hand steady as I took his offering. "I love you."

Sebastian opened the door and gave me a quick kiss as I walked out. "Love you, too."

I was a couple of steps away when I heard my name.

"Emma, put it on your key ring so you don't lose it."

The door closed before I could reply. I guess that eliminates any question if the key was a temporary just in case he was in the shower today sort of thing. What made me smile the most was the lack of conversation. If he'd overthought the decision, he didn't feel the need to talk it through. No discussion about what it meant or didn't mean. He may have been nervous, but he wasn't uncomfortable. I seriously doubt he's in the habit of giving out keys to his place, so nervous but not uncomfortable was good.

Angie was leaning against the building when I walked up. We hugged like we hadn't seen each other in months. "Sorry, I’m late."

"Were you having sex? I'll forgive you if you were having sex."

I grimaced with a shake of my head, "Making out."

My best friend huffed out a breath, "Close enough." She held the door open for me, "I got here like two minutes ago."

Aritzia, Anthropologie, and Free People were right in a line. We'd hit them in my favorite order. Aritizia was more comfort clothes for me. Their clothes were more staples than fun. But today I found a gorgeous Sicily sweater and cardigan in a soft heathered cashmere. A pair of tie front pants in purple plaid would look awesome for wandering museums. Anthropologie gifted me with a sequined tunic dress for a night out. A simple black midi dress, a grey-blue fringed and a textured cardi, and a long black wrap jacket. Free People had a colorful mini dress, a definite statement Hyacinth dress, and a fun floral dress. Assorted other things went into my bags too. I went a little crazy, but in my defense, I hadn’t been shopping in a long time and my best friend was egging me on. Plus, there was someone to appreciate what I wore. I had all sorts of cute clothes, but dressing for a boyfriend was different. Especially one who liked to look. I knew what he liked and indulged.

Conversation while we shopped was mostly about the shopping. It's good to have a friend who'll not only tell you something makes your ass look fat but also say, "You look amazing but where the fuck are you gonna wear that more than once?"  Part of the fun was trying on horrifying things. Those things you don't understand how they were ever made. We'd mix those in with good stuff and laugh until we cried. We had a long-standing tradition that whoever found the most "exquisite" outfit was treated to lunch. We were pretty even and had pictures for documentation. Today I would be buying lunch.

"We’ve got a table at two. Alissa's going to meet us."

"That'll be fun. Are she and Will coming tonight?"

"I don't think so. They've got a family thing."

I nodded and we headed toward Chelsea, stopping at the Guitar Store for strings and a capo. We had plenty of time so we stopped anywhere else that caught our eyes. Walking was more private and so was our conversation.

"Anything I should know about before I see you tonight with your boyfriend?"

I sighed in relief. Finally. I bumped her hip with mine, "I love him."

Angie put her arm around me, "This is not news, Emma."

We shared a laugh. "I wasn't sure until I was in the cab leaving his place. Georgia solidified it. Sebastian was so good talking me through all their shit. He and Eli have more in common now. They both hate my parents."

"Eli doesn't hate your parents."

I pulled away, looking at her with raised eyebrows and clear disbelief written on my face. "Try again."

Angie spoke through our laughter, "Eli tries not to, but they make it truly hard. I think he'd be more forgiving if you didn't have us and your Seattle family. Eli loves you like a little sister, best friend, and some weird second wife he's never fucked. He’s protective. He and Sebastian are going to have to figure out how to share."

"They'll arm wrestle or something. Then maybe you'll become Sebastian’s little sister, friend, and second girlfriend. Ooo, we could use you to confuse the fans. If we're out and get seen we can trade off and kiss each other’s dates. Set up a different narrative."

"Good idea.

“It'll be more fun for you. I have kissed Eli, but you don't know about Seb."

"I doubt anything will become so severe that making out with Sebastian is the answer." She smiled, "Not that I would mind."

"You would not mind. He's one hell of a good kisser."

She backtracked, "Who said it first? How did it happen."

"He surprised me showing up early from Canada, watched me cleaning up my classroom for a minute, then told me the song I was dancing along to was about sex. I turned around and he had on those ears. He looked so adorable. He looked at me with his mouth and eyes open wide and said, “Fuck, I love you."

Angie slapped her hand on her chest, "He didn't know until right them." She gasped, "He came in wearing those ears to be cute and winds up telling you he loves you. He is adorable.” She glared at me, "And you said it back."

I nodded, “In Romania."

"What's up with learning Romanian?"

I trusted her with everything. "It's his name. He prefers it in Romanian. I've been learning just enough to add it to his name. It has a very nice effect on him.” I remembered the wall and shook myself out of the memory. “Plus it makes him happy.”

"And you’re happy?"

I nodded, "Incredibly. All the reasons we talked about are still going on. He adores me and it's clear by how he treats me. And I love taking care of him." I knew she’d understand what I meant.

"There is nothing better in the world. I'm so happy you have someone. It had been so long I thought you were intentionally keeping everyone away."

“Just waiting for the right one."  I pulled out my key chain. "I do have a new key."

Angie snatched it, "He keyed you!"

"Looks like it."

"Do you worry this is going fast? I mean it is going fast."

"Yes. It is going fast. There is a risk that maybe this time next year we could be married, have three kids, and signing our divorce papers." I barely made it through without laughing.

Angie snorted, "Sign a prenup so you don’t have to pay alimony when his mid-life crisis tanks his career."

"I talked to Trevor about Sebastian. He knows about my parents, Amy, rehab, and how shitty they can be to me, but he doesn't how about what happened." I stopped walking and looked at her. "I'm starting to feel ashamed for not telling him. That's never happened before." Relationship or friendship. It had never happened. I looked at the most recent member of my secret club. "I don't want to."

She understood, "Why?"

"I don't want him to change the way he looks at me."

Angie smiled, "He won't. You don’t know that yet. It's only been a month. When you know, you'll tell him, and he will look at you just the same or better than he does now. It'll be fine."

"How do you know?" It wasn’t a smart assed clap back. I sincerely wanted to know her reasoning.

"Because he feels different to you and about you. You’re both sharing things neither of you share. That’s the glue for your relationship. You’re adding a little more glue, letting it set up, then adding more. It's getting stronger and eventually, you'll both tell the big secrets and it will be like a layer of epoxy around you that will make you near impossible to break.”

"I like that."

"I speak the truth."

We beat Alissa to the restaurant and ordered a pitcher of margaritas. I was still rearranging and shoving bags into bags under the table when she got there. Angie jumped up and they hugged. I took a step closer, but instead of hugging me, Alissa looked at me warily. “Is it ok for me to be here? Angie said it would be.”

I looked at Angie then back to Alissa, “Why wouldn’t it be?” Oh, what the fuck was going on? I just wanted a nice drunken late lunch with friends after a successful shopping expedition then go home and make out some more with my hot boyfriend.

Alissa grimaced, “I’m sorry for saying all that about Sebastian.”

“Oh!” I laughed and put my hand on my chest. Relieved. I pulled her into a hug, “I’m not upset. Between you and Kirk and the shit Eli told him, we had a somewhat uncomfortable, but really good conversation.”

“Good.” We sat down and Alissa kept talking. “I didn’t mean to be negative. It was just strange. How he was acting and the things you were saying. In a good way. It didn’t come out that way.”

Why is she still . . . oh. “Sebastian said something.”

She cringed, “More of a small group WhatsApp with me and Kirk.”

I laughed again. “Sounds fun.” I sort of wish he hadn’t done that, but I understand why he did. In the end, it was a good thing, but they couldn’t know if I would be scared off by their words.

Angie jumped in, “There’s no way Emma didn’t talk that through.”

Alissa didn’t know me well enough yet to know I wouldn’t let the conversation fester. “Especially with us being a thousand miles apart for the next two weeks. Why is that distance makes time seem longer?”

“I don’t know, but it does. Seb was right to be angry. We could have screwed things up. Neither of us realized how important you were to him. He was worried. That’s more like Seb. Kinda. He’s confusing.”

I think I know what she’s going for. It’s very like him to be worried, but not so much calling out a friend about a girlfriend. From what we’ve talked about and what I learned on that post he’s not had a history of defending girlfriends. I could be wrong, but I don’t think so. I wasn’t willing to go into that here. I changed the subject. “And then he goes and tells Will to post a picture of us.”

Alissa nodded, “How’d he react to the comment saying he was going to propose?”

Angie started laughing, “She’d say no.”

“I told him not to. He’d need a good reason. Like he’s actually not a citizen and needs a marriage green card. Or maybe health insurance. I have good health insurance.”

That was the end of that and we went on to other topics. Alissa and Will were having dinner with family but would come by Bowery Ballroom if they were done early. Keaton and Eli’s bands were friends and often teamed up to fill a bigger hall and split the money. They usually made more that way than in one of the smaller halls. Both did a full set and even though Keaton was the bigger name they would trade off who opened. Tonight was Eli’s turn.

We split up outside the restaurant. Alissa going back home and Angie and I heading to the boutique by Sebastian’s.  It wasn’t a horrible walk, but we had a lot of bags. In the cab, Angie gave me a look. One I could read perfectly. She wanted to know what I’d avoided at lunch. I like Alissa and I’d say we’re friends. She’s also married to one of Sebastian’s best friends. I didn’t know what the line was. Not for Sebastian. He’d tell me to do what I wanted. The line was mine. Will and Alissa were still enough strangers to me that I wasn’t comfortable with too much information flow between all of us. I wouldn’t think anything of it with Angie and Eli and I was confident that given some more time it would be the same with Will and Alissa. Also, I didn’t know how intimate of conversations Sebastian had with his friends. I’d need to be around more to know.  

I’d told Angie about our conversation after the party. In general. With what Alissa had said I went into a little more detail, filled in holes, and answered questions. I watched her thinking. I knew what was coming and was glad for it. “Are you worried? I’d be worried. Maybe not worried. Concerned. It’s like being a rebound. You’re the first after something else, only the something else is personal growth. You don’t know if he’s going to go back. You know what I mean?”

I did. “If he wasn’t so forthcoming with talking about it, I would be concerned. He’s laid it all out there. What he’s done, not done, feels bad about. He doesn’t act like that with me. If he starts too, I’ll know what's going on.” I told her about the conversation on the deck where he did want to shut down and how we got through it. “Struggling with change doesn’t bother me. All the girlfriend stuff.” I shook my head and shrugged. “We’re going to have to figure out what both of us are good with. I think I’m going to be able to not get sucked into comments or let them get to me, but I don’t know for sure. I know private is ok, but I’m not ok with being denied. I’d feel like a dirty little secret. I could change my mind. Could be next week. No idea.”

Angie took my hand, “I still get hate from Eli’s fans. We had to figure out how to deal. You guys will too. The rest, I think you’re right. If he’d gotten pissy and refused to talk about what Alissa and Kirk had said it would be a problem. Everybody gets a chance to do things differently. I don’t for one second think you’re going in blind or overlooking things because you want a boyfriend. You’d walk away if he wasn’t treating you right.” She got the look she gets when she’s about to tell me something I don’t like. I know that look, because I have the same one. “I’m one hundred percent not saying now. Way too soon. You’re already started to feel ashamed and that’s not going to get better. Might not get worse, but it’s not going to get better. You are the bravest person I know. Don’t let being afraid of your past ruin your future.”

What do you do for work? I'm currently unemployed. I only get paid now and again to do pictures for people. What would you ideally like to do for work? I'd love if I could just be a photographer. Have you ever been arrested? If so, what for? No. How big an age gap is between you and your siblings? My immediate sisters and I are two years apart. My half-siblings, I don't know. I don't have their ages memorized, but I do know 5+ years, some even 10. Do/did your siblings cause trouble? Not really, we were good kids. What's your dream vehicle? I don't really have one. It was weird, like no one had ever had a problem with it before, it was just this one teacher that I passed in the hall. Who was the last person to request you on a social media network - and did you accept? Someone I didn't know, so obviously not. Who was the last person’s vehicle that you rode in? Mom's. Who was the last person to make you laugh or smile, and why? Another current obsession of mine: John Wolfe, another let's player who I think is super funny. He said something that made me snicker before I turned on music and started this. Who was the last person that you took a photo with? My half-sister while she was visiting. Who was the last person to pay you a compliment, and what did they say? In group therapy the other day, one of the other women told me that even if I don't believe it, I bring so much positivity to group and she was really happy to be there while I am. I was so so super flustered but flattered, too. Who’s the last person that you visited in the hospital? My mom, following her surgery. Who is the last person that you lent money to? Actually today to Mom. What was the last food that you ate? I warmed up a burger for dinner. What did the last pair of footwear that you wore look like? They're just black flipflops. We need to work on ourselves before we could properly support each other and stay in a healthy mindset. Why did you leave your last job? I couldn't handle the stress of serving people and having so many responsibilities at once. How long has it been since you last visited a doctor? How about a dentist? I literally went to the doctor today because I had a follow-up appointment about my weight gain again. I haven't been to the dentist in a few months; I had a normal cleaning my last visit. How big was the last fish you caught? Oh boy, this is stretching years back. It was probably something small, idr at all. Give me the first initial of your last name? D. Something in your home that’s on its last leg(s)? We just moved here, so nothing that's a part of the house itself. As far as items we actually own, idk. Where do you purchase most of your clothes? I haven't gotten new clothes in so long, idk. I would probably say Hot Topic. Describe your skincare routine. I don't have one, if I'm being honest. I just shower. What’s your typical morning routine look like? I don't have one of those, either. The only thing that's consistent is going to the bathroom, eating, and taking my meds. Even brushing my teeth, the time of day when I do that (if I'm not leaving the house) varies. Then it's time to just binge stuff on YouTube and do whatever on the laptop... Are you still playing Animal Crossing? I've never played it, actually. How has the pandemic specifically affected you? It's caused a lot of stress worrying about my mom falling ill, given her being immunocompromised.
