Key Reasons Why Leadership Development Programs Fail
Today’s business environment is marked by intense competition, automation, uncertainty and more. There is immense pressure to improve market share and profitability through enhanced efficiencies. The need for agile and versatile leaders who could grab opportunities and scale up companies' performance has come to the forefront. Robust corporate leadership development programs have emerged as an effective solution for creating strong leaders.
Most organizations in India, such as Tata Group companies, Aditya Birla Group, Wipro Limited, Larsen and Toubro Ltd, Reliance India Limited, Adani Group, Merck, Pfizer, General Motors etc invest in intensive leadership development programs for their senior leaders and managers to create a leadership pool within the organization.
But do all programs yield results? Certainly not. Despite massive resources -financial and non-financial involved in learning & development processes, the result at times is disappointing.
In this blog, we’ll skim through some of the key reasons that make company leadership development initiatives futile.
Nailing down the Reasons Why Leadership Development Programs Fail
Psychological unpreparedness and personal limitations
How well the trainees/learners ingest and employ the learned skills depend upon their underlying mindsets and personality traits. Taking up new responsibilities or spending time learning new skills is a burden for many. Now turning reluctant candidates into active and interested participants is a challenge. Understanding and addressing personal limitations can make a difference.
Discovering some of the deepest thoughts, assumptions and beliefs are prerequisite of behavioural change—one that is often overlooked in development programs. Promoting the virtue of delegation, for instance, appears good in theory, but successful adoption becomes difficult to achieve if the program participants have a “controlling” attitude. Hence, in such a scenario an organization must opt for the best leadership development programs in India, crafted smartly keeping in mind different mindsets and traits that need to be channelized for a desired outcome.
Lack of support from organizational set-up
Organization is primarily a system of interacting elements that encompasses roles, responsibilities, and relationships defined by organizational structure, processes, leadership styles, cultural backgrounds, and HR policies & practices. For leadership development program to become successful all these factors must be taken into consideration. Many times, development programs fail to make their marks because the system does not support and sustain individual behavioral change. A failure to execute on strategy is many times not caused due to individual deficiencies but, rather, due to the unfavourable policies and practices created by top management. These are critical aspects that need to be fixed to ensure longer-term gains from training programs.
Obsession for quick, tangible outcomes
In India, several organizations consider employees merely as resources that can be utilized for business advantage and growth. They fail to differentiate between human resources from other tangible and material resources. This creates a weak foundation that inhibits any development program (intangible and intrinsic) to reach its fruition. Organizations that are fixated on quick, tangible outcomes often relegate personal development and employee satisfaction to the background. This acts as a deterrent that stops the talent from mastering skills that define wholesome leadership and help them become leaders in the true sense.
Development programs viewed as One and Done
Given leaders develop new behaviours and habits over time and there is constant pressure of upskilling, the idea of investing in a single event or short-term leadership development training can never yield concrete results. Leadership development process should not be considered a one-and-done approach. Instead, it should be adopted as continuous learning, opening up multiple learning options and modalities. Not to forget, the development processes should be redesigned to offer more opportunities for skill practice and application.
Takeaway
Competent and dynamic leaders are the main stake of any thriving organization. If you want your company to cut through the competition then make sure the above four mistakes in leadership development are taken care of. Push up chances of your business success by embedding leadership development in real work, identifying mindsets that underpin behaviour and ultimately, monitoring the results so that improvements can be introduced.

Building Leaders: Best Practices in Leadership Development Programs in India
In today's dynamic and fast-paced business environment, the need for effective leaders has never been greater. To foster the next generation of corporate leaders, Indian companies are becoming aware of the importance of significant investments in leadership development programs. Organizations can ensure that their manager leadership development programs have a lasting impact by emphasizing cutting-edge tactics and industry best practices.
The Importance of Leadership Development Programs in India
Leadership development programs in India are developed to give managers the skills and knowledge required to effectively manage teams, make strategic choices, and drive their organizations forward. Fostering a culture of constant learning, adaptability, and resilience is the goal of these programs rather than just sharing theoretical knowledge.
Best Practices in Leadership Development Programs
1. Customized Learning Paths
Since every business is different, a one-size-fits-all approach to leadership development often proves fruitless. Leading Indian organizations have tailored their programs to cater to individual development needs in addition to particular company goals. They ensure the effectiveness and relevance of the leadership development program by carrying out comprehensive assessments and matching training goals with corporate plans.
2. Blended Learning Models
A method of blended learning has grown exponentially popular. It combines traditional classroom instruction with online resources. This approach provides flexibility, letting managers take their time learning and still gain from face-to-face, interactive sessions. Among the resources utilized to improve the learning process are virtual simulations, webinars, and online modules.
3. Experiential Learning
The basis for several effective leadership development programs in India is experiential learning. Through practical projects, real-world problem-solving, and role-playing activities, managers may hone their abilities in a secure setting. Learners can hone the critical thinking and decision-making skills necessary for effective leadership by simulating real-life scenarios.
4. Mentorship and Coaching
A successful leadership development program for managers requires both coaching and mentoring. Emerging leaders can receive essential coaching and support from experienced leaders in the company to help them navigate their career paths and overcome obstacles. To promote a culture of constant growth, regular coaching sessions, feedback loops, and development plans are essential parts of this approach.
5. Focus on Soft Skills
Soft skills like communication, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution are just as vital for effective leadership as technical skills. These abilities are being highlighted more and more in leadership development programs in India, where they help managers build strong, cohesive teams and cultivate a pleasant workplace culture.
6. Measuring Impact
Measuring the effects of leadership training programs is essential for ensuring their success. Businesses use a range of metrics, such as company performance indicators, leadership effectiveness ratings, and staff engagement scores, to evaluate the success of their programs. Organizations can improve their programs and achieve better outcomes by using continuous feedback and evaluation processes.
In conclusion, training effective leaders requires a methodical and thorough approach to leadership training. Through the implementation of best practices including personalized learning pathways, blended learning models, experiential learning, mentorship, and a concentration on soft skills, Indian organizations can ensure the success of their leadership training programs for managers. These initiatives will be crucial in influencing organizational excellence and the direction of leadership in India as they develop further.

Enhancing CSR Impact through Collaboration with Marpu Foundation
The importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is higher than ever in the quickly changing business environment of today. Working together with like-minded organizations is crucial as companies look to improve society and the environment. The Marpu Foundation is one such collaboration that has a great deal of potential to increase the impact of CSR.
At the forefront of social change and sustainable development, the Marpu Foundation | NGO has established itself as a beacon of hope for communities worldwide. With a diverse portfolio of initiatives spanning education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and more, the foundation embodies a commitment to creating a better future for all.
"Marpu" - a synonym for transformation - was established by the respected National Youth Awardee, Mr. Kadiri Raghu Vamsi. Marpu Foundation | NGO focuses on harnessing the potential of individuals to bring about positive change in the world. With a team committed to effecting change and providing a supportive space for all, the Marpu Foundation earned the title of "The Best NGO in India" in 2020.
Emphasizing employee involvement and volunteering is one of the main features of the Marpu Foundation's CSR approach. It has over 80,261 volunteers and over 10,245,120 beneficiaries operating from 39 locations in 15 states. The themes of their work center on environmental sustainability, economic development, social development, and partnership for the goals.
Partnering with the Marpu Foundation not only enhances corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts but also significantly contributes to advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Marpu Foundation's projects are exemplary models of sustainable development, promoting social, economic, and environmental well-being. Here's how partnering with Marpu can boost CSR efforts and support SDGs, illustrated through some of their impactful projects:
1. Education Initiatives (SDG 4 - Quality Education): Marpu Foundation's education initiatives focus on providing quality education to underserved communities. Partnering with Marpu in these initiatives allows corporations to support SDG 4 by investing in programs that enhance access to education, improve literacy rates, and empower marginalized groups. For example, a partnership could fund the establishment of schools in rural areas, provide scholarships for underprivileged students, or support vocational training programs.
2. Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation): Marpu Foundation undertakes projects aimed at ensuring access to clean water and sanitation facilities, particularly in areas facing water scarcity and poor sanitation. Collaborating with Marpu in such projects enables companies to address SDG 6 by funding the construction of water infrastructure, implementing water purification systems, or promoting hygiene awareness campaigns in communities lacking access to clean water and sanitation.
3. Women's Empowerment (SDG 5 - Gender Equality): Marpu Foundation is committed to promoting gender equality and women's empowerment through various initiatives such as skill development programs, entrepreneurship training, and advocacy for women's rights. Partnering with Marpu in these endeavors allows corporations to support SDG 5 by investing in projects that foster economic independence and social empowerment among women, thereby contributing to creating more inclusive and equitable societies.
4. Environmental Conservation (SDG 13 - Climate Action): Marpu Foundation actively engages in environmental conservation efforts aimed at mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity. Corporations can enhance their CSR initiatives by partnering with Marpu in projects such as afforestation campaigns, sustainable agriculture practices, or renewable energy projects. By supporting these initiatives, companies can align with SDG 13 goals and demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship.
5. Healthcare Access (SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being): Marpu Foundation works towards improving healthcare access and promoting health awareness in underserved communities. Collaborating with Marpu in healthcare projects allows corporations to contribute to SDG 3 by funding medical camps, establishing healthcare centers, or supporting vaccination drives. By investing in healthcare initiatives, companies can help reduce healthcare disparities and improve the overall well-being of communities.
In conclusion, partnering with the Marpu Foundation offers corporations a unique opportunity to bolster their CSR efforts while making meaningful contributions towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Through strategic collaborations with Marpu, companies can address pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges, driving positive change and creating a more sustainable future for all.

Profit on the apocalypse
Having just seen the 1st season of the Fallout TV show (pretty good, some video game logic, a few plot holes, but enjoyed) I want to talk briefly about how the US Military-Industrial Complex profits from the concept of the end of the world.
Now, for starters, actually ending the world is deeply unprofitable. They do not want that, because corporations are inherently capitalist entities: they do not want to create a situation in which the economy actually breaks down. Yes, private companies have flirted with running governments in the past (at its peak, the East India Company had I think the fourth largest military in the world) but running a government is hard and actually having citizens is a pain in the ass. So they're mostly happy with someone else doing that part where money exists and they can focus on having all of it.
So what do they do? Well... they want to keep us in a constant state of anxiety that the world could end, but without it actually ending. The more scared we - or, rather, our governments - are, the better.
Let's start with an old military adage: the most expensive army is the one that's second-best. The concept is, if you opt to save money/time/effort by not being quite as good as whoever you're fighting, and you lose, then all the time/money/effort you put in was wasted: you should have spent more in order to win, or you should have lost for cheaper. And this is sort of true.
This leads to another sorta true thing: even a small edge can be a very big deal. Having fighters which are slightly more maneuverable, tanks with slightly better armor, &c., can be what decides a war. Now, the thing is - that absolute bleeding edge of abilities and technology comes at a premium. A 5% improvement comes at a 100% increase in cost. But! That 5% can mean victory! And remember, the most expensive army is the one that's second best. If you want to be able to win, you need to pay that premium!
And for the military-industrial concept, that kind of thinking is a beautiful, beautiful stream of revenue. Suppose you're, you know, Lockheed. You're called upon to build a new military system like an air superiority fighter. You load that bird up with every piece of cool tech you can imagine. It's definitely the best fighter in the skies. It's also the most expensive bird anyone has put in the air. So you're making money on the R&D, you manage to get the government to pay for building the manufacturing facilities, you're getting money for each airframe you churn out. Oh, but that's pocket change. EVERY SINGLE PIECE of that thing is proprietary as all get-out. And it's all a Military Secret. You have your trade secrets backed by an actual bona fide military. Which you don't have to pay for.
So in addition to getting money for designing the fighter, getting money to be able to build it, getting money for building it... you're also getting paid to train people on using it, and you're getting a LOT of money on the special parts to maintain it. And because you're the only one who can make those parts, your price for those is whatever you fucking want. I mean, there's negotiation, but it's kind of a joke because there's only one vendor: you. And there's a big sunk cost because they spent millions getting the planes from you in the first place.
And this gets BETTER (worse). Because your military thing is better than everyone else's, two things happen. First, your allies see the cool toy and say WANT. And the most trusted allies get them. I'll go into that later. Second, your enemies want to say they can fight it. You build a 5th generation fighter aircraft, China and Russia each say they're building a 6th generation fighter (these terms don't exactly mean anything, but they sound cool). They say they're building something with Much Better specs. So much better.
Now, the allies. They want the cool toys too. They want to be able to compete in the world of your cool toys, in case they get attacked. But they can't actually afford to devote that kind of resources to their military. So what happens is, the US government negotiates a military aid package. Your company builds an export version of the fighter (or something similar) because the US wants to retain some edge, just in case it wants to invade Europe someday. The export craft get sent to your allies, with most of the money being paid for by the US government; that money is listed as "foreign aid" but never actually leaves US hands. And now your allies have better fighters than they could afford and you're even richer. The USA has allies with good weapons it can call on for help. But... remember, proprietary parts? Which are only available from you, the USA company? Which are as expensive as you want them to be? Oh yeah, this bleeding edge stuff takes a LOT of work to keep it flying. Not only could these allied countries not afford to buy the birds, they can't afford to keep them in the air without a lot more "foreign aid" which is actually the US government paying a US company to send parts to an airfield in another country. And this also means that if the US wants to cripple a country's warfighting ability, all it has to do is say "Y'know what? We don't think we'll send you any more spare parts." That's what happened to Iran in the 80s, when it suddenly went from having a MASSIVE advantage over Iraq, to fighting a stalemate war with human wave infantry tactics that resulted in one million casualties. Because Iran was reliant on American F-14 Tomcats that while exemplary fighters for their era were horrific to keep running even by US military standards. (Oh and there's the Iran-Contra scandal where the CIA smuggled cocaine to sell to black people in order to fund illegal weapons shipments, but that's a separate horrible thing).
Anyway. Now US allies have the coolest toys but need permission from the US to use them. Let's look at US enemies and competitors. Which this model needs. Recall, China and Russia (and Iran and a couple other countries) countered by talking about their own superfighters. Realistically, they can't actually design and build anything better. The USSR was once able to do so, but they really haven't been able to surpass US R&D since the 80s. This, however, doesn't really matter. The point is they're making a lot of noise about coming up with something better. And that makes the same paranoid people who wanted your fighter initially nervous. Now they want a 7th generation fighter to surpass China's vaporware 6th gen.
This is, for Lockheed, absolutely awesome. Because it means even as they're still cranking out the 5th gen fighters they can devote their R&D to coming up with an even cooler, more expensive toy. Even if the last toy never actually got used! There's a continuous cycle of making cooler toys, some irrelevant portion of which are vaporware, none of which is really war-tested, but that doesn't matter because you get your money. Entire generations of military hardware are built only to get polished and maintained, then either sold to allies or scrapped, because you have to keep up with whatever the other guys say they can do.
Now, the key part about this cycle is paranoia. The USA has to believe they need the absolute bestest military toys and damn the expenses. US allies have to believe they, too, need those toys. And US allies have to believe they must one-up the US abilities. This maintains a constant cycle of R&D for the next thing while building the new hotness, and still getting a solid amount of money from making parts for last year's model. And, joy of joys, it doesn't matter whether any of it gets used, because it all needs to be replaced periodically anyway.
Note, too, that the way defense contractors in the USA are structured, past a certain point it doesn't actually matter which company is given the contract to build a system. If Boeing and Lockheed both compete to build the next-generation fighter craft, they can rest easy knowing that whoever wins will contract with the loser to make important parts. It's an entire ecosystem in which engineers and managers move around based on how the wind is blowing; the specific company doesn't really matter.
Now, the one part I can't speak to from personal experience is just how they keep us on the edge of the apocalypse. I know they considered the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the USSR as a great tragedy, so it's fair to say they don't exercise quite that level of control. But there's a whole lot of "lobbying" and "advertising" going on, and there are many members of Congress who are very well paid to be quite paranoid.
Ending the world isn't profitable. But it's quite, quite profitable to get as close to doing so as possible.

Is CS a better option after BBA?
Whether a Company Secretary (CS) course is a better option after a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree depends on several factors, including your career goals, interests, and the job market demand for each type of degree.
BBA + CS: A BBA degree provides a broad-based education in business and management, including subjects such as marketing, finance, and human resource management. Adding a CS course to your BBA degree can help you develop specialized knowledge and skills in the area of company law and secretarial practice. This combination of education and training can be valuable for students who are interested in pursuing a career in corporate law, company secretarial practice, or compliance management.
The CS course is a professional course that is recognized globally and is conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). It covers various aspects of company law, secretarial practice, and compliance management, and is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of these subjects. Upon completion of the CS course, students are awarded the CS designation, which is a highly regarded professional designation in the corporate sector.
One of the main advantages of pursuing a CS course after a BBA is that it provides students with a deeper understanding of company law and secretarial practice. A BBA program provides a broad-based education in business and management, while a CS program focuses on company law and secretarial practice. This combination of knowledge and skills can be extremely valuable for anyone looking to build a career in the corporate sector.
Additionally, having a CS designation can open up many career opportunities in a variety of industries, including law firms, consulting firms, and corporate companies. CS professionals are in high demand due to their expertise in company law, secretarial practice, and compliance management, and they are often sought after by companies looking for corporate lawyers or compliance officers.
It is important to note that pursuing a CS course is a long-term commitment that requires hard work and dedication. The CS course is rigorous and requires students to pass multiple exams over several years. In addition, students must also complete practical training in the form of articleship, where they gain hands-on experience in a real-world corporate environment.
In conclusion, if you have a strong interest in company law, secretarial practice, and compliance management, and are looking to build a career in these fields, pursuing a CS course after a BBA can be a valuable investment. A BBA degree provides a broad-based education in business and management, while a CS program provides a more focused education in company law and secretarial practice. With the right combination of education, experience, and dedication, a CS can help you achieve your career goals and provide you with a rewarding and fulfilling career in the corporate sector.
However, it is important to consider the job market demand for each type of degree and carefully research your options before making a decision. It is also worth exploring other options and considering your long-term career goals to determine the best path for you.
