“The creation of Black Music Month was the brainchild of Grammy Award winning songwriter/producer and one of the architects of The Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP) Kenny Gamble,” schools Dyana Williams, the music industry veteran and celebrity strategist. The songwriter/producer—along with his partner Leon Huff—has created countless classics, including “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” originally recorded by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes; “For the Love of Money” by The O’Jays; and Teddy Pendergrass’ “Turn Off the Lights.”

“When he established the Black Music Association in the late 1970s, we were a couple at that point; we had two children,” continues Williams, whose illustrious road to premier Black music advocate and tag as “the Mother of Black Music Month” began as a radio pioneer, holding her own on the airwaves during a time when women were woefully underrepresented.

It was a collective effort to that day on June 7, 1979 when President Jimmy Carter hosted the reception at the White House that made Black Music Month official. Williams, who played a critical role, describes it as “a coming together of various aspects of the music industry to celebrate and recognize this multibillion-dollar industry, not just the songwriters and the singers, people behind the scenes as well.”

Williams' love of Black music, she shares, was sparked in her native New York City at a very early age. As a child, Williams learned how to dissect music. She grew up knowing where songs were recorded, who wrote them, who sang them, who played on them, who engineered them, who produced them and more. Later the daughter of Puerto Rican parents would mix and mingle with those same folks, even dating musicians as well as forming meaningful relationships with many other titans. City College of New York’s radio station WCCR gave her the first taste of what being a behind-the-scenes mover and shaker could be.

“I was the music director. I had a jazz show, but I also availed myself of student funds to produce concerts to bring artists to the school,” she says. At a time when very few women were on the air, she took her cues from one legendary figure who is today best known for Mama, I Want To Sing!. “Vy Higginsen was on the radio at WBLS and she's the first Black woman that I listened to that inspired me to want to be on the radio,” shares Williams.

Although radio no longer physically occupies as much of her time as it did throughout her life, even as she raised her three kids, Black music still keeps her busy. She is the president and founder of the International Association of African-American Music Foundation, which organizes conferences and educational symposiums as well as produces panels that communicate the vastness of Black music. In addition, IAAAM has honored many Black music greats, including Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Babyface and L.A. Reid. She’s also a board member of the Nashville-based National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), which recently honored Missy Elliott. TV One fans also recognize her as a frequent and trusted contributor to the network’s acclaimed series Unsung.

Even as Williams enters her 70s later this year, advocating for Black music is a personal mission and calling from which she can’t retire. And for good reason. “Black music deserves champions and advocates, and that's what I see myself as,” she insists. “Black Music is American music created in this country and exported culturally, but also economically. We don't tend to think of it that way, but the reality is that Black music is big business. I'm talking about not millions of dollars, but billions of dollars. We are the trendsetters. We are the weathervane so to speak. We’re the taste. We’re the flavor all over the planet. It is us and I see myself as a person who uses her platform, whether it's social media, whether it is talking with [journalists] to spread the word about the magnificence, the viability, and the power of Black music.”

Kamala Goes Babbling in Philly With Tim Walz, Opens Mouth and Inserts Foot

Kamala Harris has finally made her selection of her running mate, and it was probably the worst choice — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, someone who isn't well-known across the country, except perhaps for his failure to properly stop the riots in 2020 that burned Minneapolis. Not exactly the best thing to be known for.

There are a ton of clips of him saying things that most Americans would find bizarre and/or disqualifying, as well as a lot of other baggage. It doesn't seem a very smart choice for a far-left candidate to double down on the far-left. That might get some folks in Michigan, but it could well cost them Pennsylvania.

After the announcement, Harris and Walz held an event in Philadelphia that showed off how cringy they would be together. She was her regular bizarre self, and he was giving off Tim Kaine vibes. You know how that choice went.

He also made me think of Howard Dean and the infamous scream.

Harris immediately went straight to the cackle and incoherence, repeating over and over again, "Good evening!" as Walz looked Dean-like and weird in the background, making weird faces and smacking his hands together.

Harris claims she launched her campaign for president a couple of weeks ago, leaving out the coup on Biden and that she didn't get one primary vote for the position.

So much for the "We want to save democracy" crew.

It sounded like a lot of what she said was from the speech she normally gives, once again raising the question, just like with Joe Biden, how much she can speak off the cuff.

Then she spoke about what she wanted to do, including helping people buy a home, own a business, and "build wealth."

That was possibly her most ridiculous statement since everything that she and Joe Biden have done since they took office has worked against people's ability to buy a home, own a business, and build wealth. Homes are out of reach for many because of the high interest rates and inflation. It's hard to "build wealth" when you need to use your savings just to keep afloat and buy groceries that are so expensive under Biden-Harris.

Harris and Walz also chanted they were "not going back."

Yes, that's the problem. "Back" under Trump, we had low inflation and more peace in the Middle East. We had good foreign policy and a secure border versus the chaos that Harris helped to bring in.

Where do they want to go into the future? Harris opened her mouth and inserted her foot.

Now that she's embraced him, she's embraced all of his radical beliefs along with all of his failures, including the Minneapolis riots — where she also promoted the bail fund for people arrested during those riots.

Does she really know what she's hooked herself to? Does she think socialism is like neighborliness, too? Does she think the red state areas are mostly "rocks and cows" like he does? That should work well, just as "deplorables" did for Hillary Clinton.

Though my feet may make me roam, my heart will always bring me home.

Most of you don’t know this but I’ve been away in the States since Jan 23 of this year. Losing Chelsea sent me over the edge and short of literally losing my mind, something had to give. I needed to be rescued.

And rescued I was, by one of the best people I have ever been blessed to have in my life. She put me on a flight and whisked me away to Philadelphia. Vishal, knowing that being on the farm alone with our almost 100 rescues was going to be a struggle, encouraged me to go and sent me off with love and hope that I would find my fire and return rested and resolute in my commitment to accomplish the goals I had set for myself years ago.

I spent the first week in Philly sleeping and eating. I was drained in every way imaginable. Then I started to miss home and most of all Chelsea. I would cry myself to sleep almost every night. Ironically, it got worse as I began to rest up. I would talk to Vishal every day and while part of me was in desperate need of a time-out the other part of me felt like I should have just stayed behind so he wouldn’t have to go through so much struggle and difficulty alone.

But deep down both of us knew that this was happening for a reason and even if we didn’t know why at the time, we had faith that God knew what He was doing.

After a month I decided to visit an old friend in Rhode Island, Dan Kesler. Dan and my ex-husband had worked together almost 20 years ago and we met on one of Dan’s trips to KL. We stayed in touch over the years through Facebook and a glance through Amtrak’s website found me on a 6-hour train ride to Rhode Island. When I got there, I met Diane, Dan’s better half. Little did we know then that both of us needed a change and a friend in our lives.

I went back and forth for the first two months between Philly and RI but found that my heart was very much at home with Diane and her family. But I started to get restless. I found myself asking God every day, ‘Why am I here? What should I do? Where am I going? Am I wasting time here when I should be home with Vishal?

Then I realized, ‘I need to make some money while I’m here so I can go back and exchange it for more money!’ And that’s what I did.

The last few months I did pet-sitting jobs, gardening jobs, yard cleaning jobs, any job that I could find. I cleaned houses, took care of people and their homes and their kids and their dogs. I saved every dollar I could find, and when I was in RI with Diane, she made sure I didn’t spend any money, offering to take care of my needs so I could save instead. I put all my earnings in my Bible and stayed focused on keeping in touch with our donors so Vishal would have enough funds to take care of himself and the dogs on the farm while still rescuing wounded and hurt strays when he was called on.

I worked so hard and saved enough to pay off our car. After seven years of not having our own wheels, we are finally proud owners of our Myvi, Zippy.

While I was busy earning, Vishal kept himself busy by taking care of business back home. He began to clear his personal backlog of things-to-do one by one. We would talk almost everyday about how we were not going to throw the last seven years of struggle away but that we weren’t going to reunite either under the same circumstances we parted from. That kept us both focused and committed to our own individual goals.

Over these past few months, we have both grown and accomplished so much, albeit separately. We did our best to support and encourage each other and to keep our promise to create the future we wanted.

Despite the new and busy life I was having in RI, my heart still yearned for my pack back home. I would ask Vishal everyday to put my call on video so I could see them. They were growing so fast, puppies into dogs, anti-social personalities into pack members, sick dogs to healthy dogs. Being around dogs in RI and observing the way they are taken care of by their humans was bittersweet, in while it was extremely heartwarming it also made me realise that back home we still have such a long way to go when it comes to the treatment of our canine companions.

Having witnessed such an appreciation for their pets made me realise that back home we are still a long way from giving dogs the respect they deserve. Despite the possibility of starting fresh somewhere new, deep down inside I knew I had to come home. I had unfinished business.

After flying for two days I landed back in KLIA where Vishal picked me up. We drove right back to Ipoh. I couldn’t wait to see the pack! I wondered…how were they going to react to not seeing me for six months???

Words cannot possibly describe coming home. The dogs ran to me and jumped all over me like I had never left. Their energy was definitely higher and some of the closer ones to me gave out high-pitched whining as if to express that they couldn’t believe I was there. It was so amazing the energy that enveloped me.

Dogs. Whether it’s 6 minutes or six months, they remember you like they just saw you yesterday.

What I came home to was nothing short of amazing. The dogs were fat and healthy. A bunch of them who had awful skin rashes when I left now had rich and thick coats. The farm was clean and there was a new pool. All the dogs looked happy. I felt so much love. It blew me away.

I don’t know how Vishal did it all by himself for 6 months. If it were me I would have gone mad! But he soldiered on one day at a time. Not once in the time I was away did he say anything like, “You need to come home”, or “Why are you still there?”

All he said was, “Do what you need to do and come home when you’re ready.”

I am blessed in ways I will never be able to measure.

Truth time - coming home was hard! I forgot the amount of time and energy it took to care for these rascals. We aren’t spring-chickens anymore and we’re starting to feel it! But this is a journey we can’t jump ship, and so we keep on moving, one foot infront of the other, one day at a time, together.

We have had to make a decision we aren’t too happy about, and that is to halt taking in any more dogs, unless it’s a dire situation. We are always hoping for more donors and sponsors to come onboard, and in the next few months I’m going to focus on trying to get every one of our pack sponsored. We hope you will consider sponsoring one of our kids so we can continue rescuing animals in need.

For now, I’m going to enjoy the company of my pack with Vishal on our farm away from the world. The universe has given us everything we need and more and continues to inspire us to live our lives with passion and love.

In the end, the only question you really need to answer is, where does your joy live? For me, it’s with my dogs.

CBP's Baltimore Field Office Takes Nation's Top Spot at Intercepting Stolen Vehicles Being Shipped Overseas BALTIMORE, MD (STL.News) U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in the Baltimore Field Office intercepted 239 stolen vehicles during the fiscal year 2022 (Oct.1, 2021 – Sept. 30, 2022), taking the top spot among all CBP field offices. The vehicles were valued at nearly $11.5 million. Nationally, CBP recovered 1,235 stolen vehicles during the fiscal year 2022 before they could be exported by sea or driven across the United States land borders. During many of the seizures, CBP officers partnered with special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), who, along with their state and local law enforcement partners on HSI's Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST), carried out investigations into the stolen vehicles. The Baltimore Field Office officers seized an additional 73 non-stolen vehicles, which were either unmanifested, possessed fraudulent titles, or violated other export laws. CBP officers routinely inspect imports and exports to ensure that commodities comply with United States laws and safety standards and international conventions. For outbound vehicles, CBP officers examine vehicle documentation and compare vehicle identification numbers (VIN) against stolen vehicle reports. "Transnational criminal organizations use stolen vehicles as a form of currency to fund their illicit enterprise, so it is incumbent upon Customs and Border Protection officers and our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to disrupt this illegal trade in stolen vehicles," said Stephen Maloney, Director of Field Operations for CBP's Baltimore Field Office. The following data points offer insight into the Baltimore Field Office's recovered stolen vehicles during 2022. - The Baltimore Field Office ranked 1st nationally with 239 recovered stolen vehicles. The vehicles were valued at $11,488,978. - The Area Port of Baltimore ranked #2 nationally with 149 recovered stolen vehicles. The vehicles were valued at $7,397,916. - The Area Port of Norfolk-Newport News recovered 70 stolen vehicles. Norfolk ranked 7th among CBP Ports of Entry. The vehicles were valued at $3,907,667. - The Area Port of Philadelphia and the Port of Wilmington, Del., collectively recovered 20 stolen vehicles. The vehicles were valued at $183,395. - The Baltimore Field Office recovered an average of 178 stolen vehicles for each of the previous five years (890 total). This includes 95 recovered stolen vehicles in FY2021, 157 vehicles in FY2020, 246 vehicles in FY2019, and 110 vehicles in FY2018. - 95 percent (225 vehicles) were destined for the West African nations of Benin, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. - The top-5 destination countries were Sierra Leone (49 vehicles), Togo (43), Ghana (35), Nigeria (27), and Liberia (26). These destinations accounted for 76 percent of recovered stolen vehicles. - 72 percent (172 vehicles) were from model years 2019 through 2022; 43 percent (102 vehicles) were from 2021-2022. - 71 percent (169 vehicles) of recovered stolen vehicles were sport utility vehicles. - The top-5 recovered stolen vehicles were the Land Rover Range Rover (27 vehicles), Toyota 4-Runner (18), Toyota Rav4 (17), BMW X7 (16), and BMW X5 (15). - The most expensive recovered stolen vehicle was a 2022 Bentley Bentayga, valued at $187,600. CBP officers in Baltimore recovered it before it could be shipped to Togo. - The oldest vehicle was a 1973 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow recovered in Baltimore and destined for Saudi Arabia. The Silver Shadow was valued at $11,700. - CBP officers in Wilmington seized the only ATV, a 2016 Honda TRX420FM, destined for Costa Rica.
