TAZ 2023 Fic Recs

It is that time of year again! Unfortunately, I don't have as many as last year, mainly because work and Life have been a lot this year. But I am very, very glad to share the fics I have loved this year and I'm looking forward to any other recs!

A Candlenights Barold by @sgrumby - or honestly, all three of the Reaper Squad Candlenights fics! Based off that one liveshow where Merle became Santa Clause. Now it is the job of Barry, Lup, and Kravitz to deliver presents to children every Candlenights! This one is based off A Christmas Carol and is not only hilarious but also super in character.

The Best Version Possible by @thedaisiestdaisy - Taako's experience with past romances, his current one with Kravitz, as well as the aftermath of Story and Song. This is a beautiful, meaningful fic that hits me in the feels every time I read it. It's such a deep, refreshing dive into Taako's character.

a monster might begin to worry by @anistarrose - In short, a Barry-kills-Governer-Kalen AU. In long: Such a good fucking fic. Rose's character voices are top notch and she's so incredibly good at playing with emotions and building up scenes. Astrology for Horse Jugglers by @noodyl-blasstal - Kravitz and Taako meet at a wedding. This goes badly for everyone except them. This fic is pure chaos and I adore it so, so much.

We Got Boned! - Another one by Noodyl! Barry and Lup write a book for payback, kinda. This one is such a fun, weird turn of events. I cannot describe my love for it.

Revenge Plus One by @ceilingfan5 - Kravitz is invited by his ex (Edward) to go on a cruise. A cruise that will host Edward's wedding. And, to add insult to injury, Edward (rightly) assumes that Kravitz will have no one to bring along. So Kravitz does the responsible adult thing: Invite the gorgeous man who sells bagels in the work cafeteria (Taako) on the cruise with him. There is fake dating! There is tension! There is romance! I love this fic so much, I want to eat it.

fashion statement by @journalofimprobablethings - Taako takes Lup's robe when he finds her and the umbrella. Lucretia deals with that. This fic? Destroyed me. And I loved it. It's pretty full of angst but the good kind, y'know?? I'm in love.

Barry Allen astrology vs. Hal Jordan astrology- who is what? :D

Oooh yay, this is a much easier question! 😁

So, if we’re going off of their canon birthdays (which change a lot and/or aren’t really stated or kept to often) then because Hal’s birthday is February 20th and Barry’s birthday is March 19th (Pre-Crisis*, more on this later) that makes them BOTH Pisces!

I kinda love this arrangement because they both definitely show Pisces traits in pretty different ways but always with an undercurrent of deep understanding of one another! They’re both very compassionate, altruistic, and sociable (mostly Hal on this front hehe) people who can be quite emotional, although they’re also both very good at keeping most of their emotions in check when the need arises. Their Pisces friendship is seen most often in the fact that neither of them are prone to opening up easily except with each other, this is when that deeper understanding of one another comes in. A lot of times they clam up around other friends and family but put the two of them together and they instantly confide in each other about all their deepest, darkest worries, it’s the sweetest!

Now, from a purely headcanon perspective: I think Hal is a total Aries and Barry is most definitely a Gemini (I’m not just saying this because I’m a Gemini, I swear!)!

You can’t convince me that Hal isn’t the stereotypical Aries with his steely will, impulsive nature, and incessant need to TAKE ACTION!! And Barry is the picturesque Gemini as a master communicator (HOW many times has he gotten Hal out of a sticky situation by using a few honeyed words?), deep-thinker, and with a wit that puts Hermes himself to shame.

This now brings us to their Aries/Gemini friendship which truly highlights the ever-present question about Hal and Barry: how are they friends?!? I’ll tell you how! They just get each other in a way that allows them to butt heads without ever actually stepping on toes. They both enjoy the thrill of the chase and seeking the answers which their shared curiosity MUST have, and while Hal’s incessant need to run out ahead may sometimes send Barry into a tizzy, Barry’s own love of always being on the move, and his overall chill demeanor with joining Hal on his adventures, makes them such. a. great. team! Hal’s sometimes brusque demeanor can also rub a lot of people the wrong way, but Barry’s wit and understanding allows him to take anything Hal says and just let it roll down his back, no harm done. And when Barry finds himself too in over his head and falling into a cycle of overthinking, Hal is there with his straightforward honesty to bring Barry back from the brink. They’re truly one of the best friendships in fiction and I can probably write an entire book about all the things I love about them, but I’ll just stop here for now 😉

*Okay so back to this before I’m done, in Post-Crisis continuity Barry’s birthday was changed to May 13th which would make him canonically a Taurus which is just not vibin’ with me at all y’all. Like, I guess, he is a pretty steadfast person and he does like security (and you should really never push him to the breaking point), but I don’t know. There are other Taurus traits like being sensual and very pleasure-seeking that are just the total antithesis of Barry to me which makes me kinda wanna buck canon in this regard hahaha

KACEY MUSGRAVES - "DEEPER WELL"

Hannah Jocelyn: Kacey Musgraves makes the second-best Kacey Musgraves song we're covering today. [5]

Aaron Bergstrom: "Deeper Well" sounds like someone else trying to write a Kacey Musgraves song without fully understanding why that's something people would want. Over the course of Musgraves' first three albums, culminating in the near-perfect Golden Hour, we got to know this incredibly likeable, relatable songwriter. Her little nods to things like cannabis and astrology were fun quirks, but never core to her appeal. Now it seems like she views herself as some kind of novelty act, Spacey Kacey as caricature, and so to get back on track after the relative flop of star-crossed she's maxed out those specific character attributes. As a result we get a flat triangulation of a song with clunky references to gravity bongs and Saturn returns that seem disconnected to the point of being meaningless. [4]

Dave Moore: Lesser Kacey Musgraves even before the gravity bong shows up. The songwriting's gone mushy and circular, which is a shame because minor Musgraves is often charming (my low-key favorite song from her first album is still "I Miss You"). She seems to think that her tell-don't-show version of finding purpose, which somehow has more crackpot woo-woo in it than friggin' Kesha, is going to make up for the fact that, songwise, she's not going anywhere.  [5]

Isabel Cole: Astrology is fake but I too have felt the power of the Saturn return — not an overnight transformation but the dawning sense that perhaps after all I could choose something other than what had felt foreordained by my own gravity, a force that once had seemed to me more immovable than the stars. I love how gently Musgraves bids farewell to the past here: “no regrets, baby, I just think that maybe it’s natural when things lose their shine.” Many things are worth doing for a while; few things are worth doing forever. It’s a perspective on growing up not as an abandonment of the youthful self but simply as a movement into new territory. And the song is so pretty, in an easy way that sounds lovelier to my ears every time I listen — pretty like morning light in summer, unhurried, serene. [7]

Nortey Dowuona: Oh, so this song was co-written by Daniel Tashian, son of the legendary Barry and Holly Tashian, songwriters of "I'll Take My Time Going Home"? You mean this had no other choice than to be good? That's not fair!? I wanted a choice in thinking this was OK! [9]

Taylor Alatorre: "Deeper Well" illustrates its core concept a bit too faithfully for its own good. It revolves around a musical holding pattern which is meant to serve as a sonic rendering of our dangerously seductive habits and circular tendencies, then lingers about too long in this pretty but hidebound pattern of its own making. Good for a master's thesis in music composition, not so much for a lead single teased at the Super Bowl. Its saving grace is how it departs from the divisive sound of star-crossed without reading as a mewling apology for it, instead sounding like the genuine product of a woman who's had her dial turned to Sirius XM's The Bridge for the past six months (been there). [5]

Will Rivitz: In much the same way earth-shattering acid trip revelations translate unremarkably to plain English, "Deeper Well" relays its life lessons in the pedestrian scrawl of a hazy afterglow Notes app attempt. With few descriptive details sans a single reference to a gravity bong, Musgraves' (admittedly correct) insights that "some people are not worth my energy, smoking weed all day can be a waste of time, and it's OK that I grew up in a small town" come across flat. That she's backed by a track as insubstantial as her pen does her no favors. [4]

Leah Isobel: "You got dark energy / Something I can't unsee" is such a terrible line it honestly makes me wonder if Golden Hour was even any good. That twinkling, felt-coated piano at the high end does ease my doubts -- but only a little. [3]

Michael Hong: This is Kacey Musgraves diving into the lifestyle influencer grift (self-help manual to follow), her voice doubled to take on a detached yet authoritative sheen. It lacks nuance, yet you search for it anyway -- for me, it's the way she sings "I found a deeper well," the melody left hanging, the thought left incomplete. Against all reason, I'm sitting here at the bottom of it, waiting and still wondering what comes next. [6]

Katherine St. Asaph: Hot take: "You've got dark energy" is fine (scansion aside). It's "my Saturn has returned" that's the deeper embarrassment, and I'm not sure how one dislikes the first bit of woo while being fine with the other. Anyway, this is basically "Merry Go Round" grown shaggy and unkempt and sprouting little weeds of "The Sound of Silence," plus the me-first self-care message beloved of inspirational pop culture. Think "Yes, And?" with the subtext of cheating swapped out for a subtext of depression. Kacey just seems so unenthused, so resigned; the future she sings about doesn't seem to offer joy, just the lack of sunk costs. The subtext is so unconcealed and consistent that it feels like it must be deliberate -- but it can't be deliberate, because no one ever portrays this kind of mindset as bad. Or maybe it can't be deliberate because, judging by the arrangement, the deeper well she's found might just be reverb. [6]

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: The central tension in “Deeper Well” is that the growth and wellness that Kacey is singing about sounds like it came from a deeply unwell place. She says goodbye to relationships that no longer fulfill her, drugs that no longer bring her the highs they used to, and dark energy that can’t be unseen—but through it all, she sounds the most contemplative and at peace she has been in years. Adulthood is about coming to terms with the fact that the choices that you made were the best decisions you had at the time, and about learning to forgive yourself for not having all of the answers—about love, friendship, self-care—magically from the start. How can a process that feels so ego-shattering and devastating ultimately be so good for us—and how can we forgive ourselves for fighting it? As a 27-year-old, I’m not exactly hearing “When I turned 27, everything started to change” objectively, nor do I want to. Sometimes a song arrives at the right moment in your life to hit perfectly.  [10]

Mark Sinker: Not sure if I’ve ever gone on about this here, but a thing I’d love to read or to be directed toward is a deep comparative study of melody within different genres, the shapes and turns and cadences that evoke this milieu, versus the others usual to that one. The key phrase here seems to me highly untypical of the kinds of tuneline you’d expect to find in country, and not just because it’s drenched in big indie echo (plus whispered). What exactly is building up these expectations? I need someone with a YouTube channel and audio examples alongside the staves and dots and sharps and flats – even just an overhead projector and a long pointy stick. They can prove I’m very wrong if they like! (Maybe I am!)  [9]

Ian Mathers: Not really a great sign when the most interest I can muster is in the way the bassline periodically threatens to pivot to full-on "Walk on the Wild Side." The "deeper well" stuff just isn't signifying for me, nor the "dark energy" bit. Sure, it sounds like personal growth, and I bet from the inside it means a lot, but it registers as... kinda nothing? There are a couple of floaty bits that are nice, and certainly nothing dips below "pleasantly competent," but if I could just about squint and see what people were raving about with "High Horse," my vision isn't quite as clear here. [5]

Alfred Soto: Kacey Musgraves makes agreeable music that holds my attention while it's on. "Deeper Well" has the misfortune to sound like middling Taylor Swift -- something from the back half of Speak Now, say. This well is shallow. [4]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: In a few years I will hear this while perusing vegetables at a nice grocery store and hum along pleasantly without being aware of what I'm doing. For now, in my conscious experience, I am utterly unmoved by her studied, philosophical blankness – people didn't like the last album very much, but at least it had hooks! [4]

Joshua Lu: In the over ten years since I first listened to Kacey sing about weed, it's been legalized in my state, I grew old enough to legally purchase it, I reached a point in my life where I wanted to dabble in it (2020 was a time), and I got hooked enough to build up a substantial tolerance. Through all this time, I had her music: rolling joints in "Follow Your Arrow," letting the grass just grow in "High Time," having a "Slow Burn." If she could've snuck in a reference to a bong in her Christmas album, I bet she would've. To hear Kacey sing about dropping weed thus felt more cataclysmic than anything else she could've done. Yes, I was excited by her return to a more standard country sound, even better with that metallic tinge that embellished some of her greatest recent work, but Kacey Musgraves singing about leaving weed behind? Listening to "Deeper Well," though, it can't help but feel natural: it was just a thing that she liked once but would rather leave behind, and some things in life are just like that. There's no judgement or embarrassment, just an acknowledgement of a change in her life, and I appreciate how the song isn't explicitly about getting wiser or more responsible or any of those things that people assume come with aging. It's instead framed as a continued discovery of who she is and what's out there in the world, and the route she took to become the person she is today. Funnily enough, I stopped taking weed this year too. I'm glad I now have a Kacey song for that process as well. [9]

Thomas Barrow & Richard Ellis, and eclipses as a harbringer of change

Everything related to the moon is automatically related to Richard Ellis, right?

Eclipse is defined as an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and the observer or between it and its source of illumination. Here we will discuss lunar and solar eclipses with astrological meanings and real-life eclipses that happened closely to canon.

An eclipse of the sun happens when the moon moves between sun and earth, blocking out the sun's rays and casting a shadow on parts of earth. Total eclipse happens when the moon covers the sun completely. Lunar eclipses happen when earth positions itself between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow across the moon's surface.

The Sun & The Moon 🌙

Sun's path is the unifying symbol in astrology, since the other planets orbit around it. The sun is therefore related to what is ideal, fixed, relatively permanent and unchanging. It's also related to power, to kings and queens, to powerful or famous people, to rulership and governance. It also has been associated with ambition and purpose, and it represents clarity and direction.

In contrast to the symbolism of the sun, the moon has traditionally been more closely related to the realm of impermanence, as it is constantly waxing and waning. As servants, Thomas and Richard work in an industry of the past, but the world around them is changing constantly. Like Richard says it, "Fifty years ago, who'd have thought man could fly?".

The moon's method of illumination is more subtle, relying on reflected light. Indeed, the moon symbolizes things such as our inner feelings and desires, our shadow self, and things that we are yet to discover about ourselves. "When you're like me, Mr Carson, you have to read the signs as best you can because no one dares speak out" & "You just need to be a bit more circumspect in future, Mr Barrow".

Solar Eclipse 🌝

With all of this in mind – in an eclipse, the moon covers the sun. The moon, within all of its own symbolism, represents Thomas and Richard's relationship (the crescent fob as a promise of seeing each other again). The sun represents the status quo: Richard having a stable position requiring some kind of ambition to acquire and Thomas having his life center around serving the ruling class. But when they met, the moon covered the rational sun. Richard helped to sabotage the royal visit and Thomas slammed the door on an earl's face, both betraying the rich and famous. "It feels good to be two ordinary blokes".

The sun is also sometimes seen as a ruler judging us from above, and shadows (outside their many negative meanings) are seen as protection. What happens in the shadows is Turton's and kisses hidden in plain sight.

Eclipses are known for being major harbingers of change and often align with exciting new beginnings and twists of fate. Total solar eclipses are a rare event, but sometimes all the celestial bodies are aligned for true love to happen, perhaps?

June 29th, 1927 🌌

On June 29th, 1927, a total solar eclipse was visible from the British mainland soil for the first time in 203 years. R.A. Marriott describes: It caused nationwide excitement which included mass population movement to the towns, villages, moorlands and offshore waters of Wales and the North of England, and severely tested the country’s transport and communication systems.

Blue line displays maximum eclipse path. In York, 99.40% of the sun was covered at 5:24 in the morning. Downton Abbey would have experienced almost a total eclipse.

Railway companies encouraged people to travel to experience the eclipse. Though anyone who travelled might have ended disappointed. Totality only lasted 23 seconds, and very few were lucky too see it because of the cloudy weather. Sylvia Seeley writes:

The narrow belt of totality, only about 28 miles wide, swept accross England in a line to include parts of North Wales, Lancashire and Yorkshire. Thousands upon thousands of spectators were gathered at various centres in the line of totality, from one side of England to another, only to be greeted on the great day with a drenching and hopeless dawn of impenetrable clouds.

The royal visit is set on July 20th–22nd, 1927*. So around a month before Thomas and Richard met, a rare cosmic event symbolising change and new beginnings took place. 💖 I would assume at least some of the residents of Downton Abbey got out of bed early enough to stand outside in dark and rain. Did Thomas bother, I don't know. Richard probably was still in London, experiencing much the same. Or maybe he was already on the Yorkshire tour, with some Giggleswick luck? The summer of 1927 is one of the rainiest on the record, by the way. Since it was perfectly sunny for the parade in Downton, I'd expect the clouds cleared everywhere the king step foot in.

Wet and depressing athmosphere also mentioned in the final page of Dorothy L. Sayers' 1927 novel Unnatural Death:

As the gate clanged open to let them out, they stepped into a wan and awful darkness. The June day had risen long ago, but only a pale and yellowish gleam lit the half-deserted streets. And it was bitterly cold and raining.

“What is the matter with the day?” said Wimsey. “Is the world coming to an end?”

“No,” said Parker, “it is the eclipse.”

*This is debatable, I think! The month July as far as I know comes from Edith's line about giving birth in March. It wouldn't be a big stretch to think the movie was actually set in June. I do like the eclipse better as an omen for a twist of fate, but if you'd like to think them going eclipse gazing right after the visit, it's technically possible!

Dancing Partners 🌔

If you had asked me just a few days ago, which one, Thomas or Richard, I would associate with the sun, I would've said Richard. But I've got it all wrong! Obviously the guy standing in a dark street talking about moonbeam fairies is the moon.

Some of the the Sun's traits, like positivity and confidence, I would hand over to Richard. But other than that, he reminds me of the moon. The moon is hidden, and then it isn't. Slowly we see more of it, one part coming out of the shadow after another, but then it starts disappearing again, and we doubt if we ever knew him at all. He can quite literally fool you with his voice, and seems different every time you look at him, adapting into every moment gracefully. As said before, the sun represents clarity. I wouldn't call Richard a lunatic, but his actions may seem... more on the side of the moon, sometimes.

Thomas might not always be the sense of reason either, but he has some of the sun's traits. (And he likes the sun!). In the movie, unlike the subtle moon, he says openly what he means with an expressive face. Mr Ellis – the Moon – is certainly more circumspect (or so he says!). The sun is symbolic of action and intesity, while the moon is of passivity and thought. Our Sun's slamming doors and dancing and getting upset about it, but both times Richard's been there to listen and mysteriously solve things.

Sun and moon being in love relies on the concept of opposites attracting, and I actually see Thomas and Richard as quite similar. And I do keep seeing Richard as the sun too. (With many moon-like qualities in Thomas as well). I'd love to hear your insights if you have them!

The sun and the moon being romantic partners is not my idea. Legend says that they have always been in love, but that they could never be together, because the moon rises at sunset and the sun just at dawn. Eclipse was created as proof that there is no impossible love. In 1844, Jean Jacques Grandville published a drawing of the sun and the moon kissing during an eclipse. A french film from 1907 with sexual themes shows a romantic encounter between the sun and the moon during an eclipse. Some have seen it as an early example as homosexuality in film.

And not to get too meta, but! The most important thing when we think of the relationship of sun and moon is that the moon reflects the light of the sun. We know only very little of Richard, and so many of our own headcanons rely on what we think would be fitting or interesting for Thomas. Thus we only see the moon in the sun's light.

Lunar Eclipse 🌚

In astrology, the moon is the banner bearer for things that come to be and pass away. Canonically speaking, Thomas' and Richard's relationship didn't last a very long time. It is sad, but I think something positive I got from the break-up it's maybe the thought that good things don't have to be forever. Like a total eclipse happens rarely and doesn't last a long time, it can be a life-changing moment.

While solar eclipses often bring new beginnings, lunar eclipses are more likely to bring about sudden endings, conclusions, or powerful changes of heart. That way we could think solar eclipse as a symbol for the start and a lunar eclipse as the end (or an unpermanent distruption) of their relationship.

Lunar eclipse is less of a spectacular event too. The moon either darkens or turns reddish or brown colour. They can be viewed by anyone on the night side of the earth and they can last nearly two hours, so they aren't as rare as solar eclipses. On average, a total lunar eclipse can be seen from any given location every 2.5 years.

Total lunar eclipses happened four times in a row on June 15th, 1927; December 8th, 1927; June 3rd, 1928 and November 27th, 1928. (Total lunar eclipses often happen in a row. Before this group, the latest was in 1924 and the next in 1931). Only the second one, December 8th, was visible from the UK, and it was a blood moon (the moon turns red).

Assuming The New Era takes place in '28, these happened around the start and end of Richard and Thomas' relationship. Eclipses are always about change. June 1927 – November 1928 is a period of huge change in Thomas' life, all about self-discovery and finding himself, which the moon is related to.

Until We Meet Again 🌜

A large partial solar eclipse was visible from Los Angeles in 1930. This newspaper article from California which I thought was funnily fitting.

And if that prompted to change his mind or if he never went, there were plenty of chances to go eclipse-gazing with Richard later. In York, June 30th, 1954, 80% of the sun was covered, October 2nd, 1959, 20% of the sun was covered, and February 15th, 1961, 90% of the sun was covered.

wes has been acting since he was a baby -- like, a literal baby. like, two weeks out the womb he was playing a baby on screen fresh out of one. ever since then, he’s been acting in some capacity, but when he was thirteen he became an outcast in the film industry due to his mothers nightmarish personality.

once he was no longer working in the industry, he and his mother moved from los angeles to san francisco, and wes switched from homeschooling to private school, attending performing arts schools with the intention of getting into academy of the arts university, also located in san francisco. unfortunately wes’ mothers bad reputation has rubbed off on him, and despite his impeccable gpa and brilliant performance of barry’s monologue from season one episode one barry, he just didn’t cut it. darden had been his backup school, and they welcomed the former child star with open arms! 

acting isn’t something wes really loves doing, it’s just something he thinks he has to do. like playing classical piano, and violin, and doing just about anything his mother tells him to. he’s a bit of a mama’s boy -- not in the sense that he wants to do whatever she says, but feels as though he has no choice otherwise. even though he’s nineteen, he’s still living under the mentality that she is his momager, and what she says goes. 

wes is a rather stubborn boy. he’s deeply set in his ways and standoffish most of the time. a lot of that stems from growing up having to stand behind his mother and let her do all the talking when it came to decisions about his life. another part of it comes from going into high school being quite well known, and not exactly well received. the competition was intense, and while wes did quickly rise to the top, he never really liked the view from up there.

if there is one thing wes is grateful to have been forced to do, it’s music. while he hates the classical piano he’s being trained to perform and the violin he can’t seem to master, he loves making music. his own music. and despite the gloomy disposition wes presents to the world, wes secretly loves and hopes to produce a blend of jazzy bedroom pop that will blow up on tik tok and do numbers on spotify. 

wes is a very talented actor. it’s difficult to tell whether or not he’s just putting on another character, or if he’s showing you the real wes nichols. when he does let you in though, he’s exceptionally loyal and would never do anything to betray your trust, because that’s all he could ever hope for in return.

I’m an ex youth minister from a flavor of Christianity that was used to abuse me for my entire childhood, and a decent amount of my adult life.
