IDK how to explain to people that loudly proclaim 'astrology is fake and has no value' that there's like... several different and culturally significant traditions and that it's a very important subject just like alchemy because it birthed the study of the stars, mathematics, meteorology and timekeeping etc

every day i barely restrain the urge to bitch about the social sciences
#☢️.txt#listen. all of the fields under this umbrella are legitimate and worth studying#but trying to group them with mainline stem is. silly at best#ppl always turn this into a 'hard vs soft sciences' thing but like. its not that!#im gonna be honest before i took higher level social science classes i didnt think much about this but like. the social sciences#place huge emphasis on the subjective nature of things and imho that goes against the very core philosophy of the natural + logical science#and like. that methodology WORKS for these fields. history benefits from a degree of subjectivity#but social 'scientists' always get pissed off that natural and logical scientists DONT consider that valid#in our fields!!! god the amount of social 'scientists' who insert themselves into physics discussions#using extremely complex aspects of quantum mechanics to justify themselves#while half of them bitch about being expected to know stats. is absurd#im gonna be real i think ppl are attached to the term social sciences bc they think thats the only way for those fields to be taken#seriously and like. thats the fucking problem isnt it????#you want fields outside of STEM proper to be taken seriously but you continually reinforce this idea by insisting#fields like history and sociology Have to be sciences in the same way as biology and mathematics#and instead of accepting that. youre the humanities its fine its literally fucking fine#you do stuff that scientists dont do. bc science alone cannot answer every single question people have#the naturalistic + objectivist worldview is very good in certain contexts! but it has faults!#and the same applies to the philosophies behind social sciences!#you cannot use the techniques in anthropology in physics and vice versa. its fucking fine#also humanities people need to stop craving approval from STEM people its so.#you are reinforcing the cycle youre pissed off about

why is it the longer your in a ba program at school,,, u realize colleges are structured in a more fucked up way than u previously thought. like… genuinely so many pretentious people doing anything to prove themselves to even more pretentious people.
my worth exists outside of a career. my worth exists outside of a fucking school building. my worth exists outside of an assignment that only functions to test my memory and attention span, not to actually aid me in understanding any of it.
i am not what the education system wants me to be, and im constantly in a state of ALMOST derailing my life and dropping out because it feels like school in general only exists to make me feel lesser than everyone around me in every way.

Just saw a post that was basically "Hey off of the internet people usually aren't so crazy antisemitic and most of my day to day interactions as a visible Jew are normal, everything is gonna be ok" and I'm making a new post to not derail, but...
I'm super glad, obviously, that this is the case for many of you. But I do think we should be ringing the alarm bells. Because while you enjoy your grocery trips and post office in relative peace (as you ought to), here is a VERY incomplete list of things I have dealt with in the last 11 months.
-assaulted on my way to class, followed, spit on repeatedly (magen David necklace)
-professor took me outside of class and told me I needed to denounce my Judaism (I mentioned in passing my dad's family in an anthropology class)
-same professor refused to accept my final paper for reasons that did not match up with paper, email full of dogwhistles
-same professor told everyone to attend the protests and "teach those zionists to know their place" she is a Black Latina young professor. Yep.
-another professor straight up refused to accept any assignments that mentioned Jewishness (they were assignments about our families). Gave a student who submitted nothing except a picture of a Palestinian flag full marks. Failed me. I am an all As student, btw. Forced to drop.
-the chair of the anthropology department threw my complaints wabout said professors away without due process. His social media is full of blood libel.
-had to miss my finals as I could not physically get to them due to the protests
-followed and harassed in stores
-synagogue was vandalized multiple times
-called a kike while things were thrown at me
-protestors stood outside of my apartment patio with final solution signs
-new apartment, away from campus: friends of roommates harassed me constantly, to the point I could not use common spaces. Roommates told me that's his right because it's his "political view." He didn't even live there.
-new roommate moved in, less than 48 hours before she attempts to stab me, after learning I eat kosher style. "...kosher? kosher?! FUCK YOU" stab stab, etc. Bitch that was my good knife.
-the other roommates tell me to gtfo of the home I'm renting, keeping my rent ("you people can afford to lose money") and destroy a good portion of my belongings while cursing to me random nonsense about Israel. The police took 25 minutes to get there. We live in the middle of the city.
-fun fact: I had never mentioned my political stance to these people and it's not on my face-out social media (very bare bones profiles)
-been disbelieved by everyone I told this to including the police, my school, the leasing company, and my now ex best friend of 7 years
-cursed at in a store when I asked if there was a kosher section
-told nobody likes Jews because we bring down the vibe and have a victim complex. My knuckles are healing just fine after that, btw, thank you for asking! She is not.
I don't know how to request the 7th off from my school without basically incriminating myself with a threat of violence. There is no world where I just sit there when a classmate says "happy October 7th."
Hope this helps.

Love this take.
In one of my ethnography classes we read a bunch of academic books by white authors studying Indigenous communities.
While they were mostly okay, though dated in some cases, a big criticism we had of one of the authors was that he never went back to the community he wrote the book about. His involvement with the community ended when his research was published, and he didn't retain any kind of relationship with the people he wrote about. He was an outsider throughout, and it showed in his work and decisions.
Another book we read was We Are Still Didene by Thomas McIlwraith. He actually guest lectured in that class, and talked about his work with the people of Iskut since publishing the book. He talked about visits with friends in the community, hunting trips he'd gone on, and the relationships he'd built during his work. He talked about an Elder who wanted to write his autobiography, and how Tom was helping with that project.
"going native", in the case of these authors, was about whether they stood apart, took what they needed, and left, or maintained connection and became part of the reciprocal relationships in these communities.
The first author did some lectures on his work later in life, and I know some people from that community personally. Both he and my friends from that reserve are fairly uncomfortable when they talk about their relationships and the legacy his research left.
I'm not as familiar with Iskut, but all the accounts I've heard, from Tom and the people he works with, have been very positive.
Participating in and caring about the communities you work with aren't just an accepted thing in cultural anthropology, they're requirements of good research.
Never trust an anthropologist who hasn't "gone native". They care more about their career than the people they work with. Feeling like part of a community means you work in the service of that community, and that's the only fair way to do ethnography in my opinion.
Hey I'm sort of curious. I haven't read the book, but I'm a fan of the show and was genuinely disappointed that the phrase "going Native" had an exclusively negative connotation when I watched. Idk if this occurred to you or not, but that's pretty blatant racism. It's especially tone deaf considering this is a show about angels and demons - which have been a tool to commit genocide against us for upwards of 500 years.
Why not just use "human"? It's accurate and doesn't frame an entire demographic as inherently bad or undesireable.
Not trying to garner any ill will, it just rlly bummed me out bc I'm Native and it's an identity I wear with great pride bc ppl have tried countless times to rip it away from me. To see it treated with such disdain was very hurtful.
I understand your concerns, and do not wish to minimise them, or your hurt. Obviously the phrase has colonial roots. However, it's a lower case N, and isn't intended to talk about Native Americans. When the angels talk about Aziraphale "going native", this is the meaning they are using. It may be negative for the grumpy angels, but it's positive for humanity and for Aziraphale and Crowley.
From Mirriam Webster online:
go native
idiom
: to start to behave or live like the local people
After a few weeks, she was comfortable enough to go native and wear shorts to work.
Example Sentences
Recent Examples:
But dogs that go native make bad guards, hunting companions, and friends.—David Grimm, Science | AAAS, 29 Oct. 2020
Let your yard go native: The Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District is offering seven native plant kits for sale that are adapted to the local climate and do not require excess watering or fertilizer once they are established.—Joan Rusek, cleveland, 6 July 2020
